NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I teach in a Northern Virginia high school, not far from Arlington and the Pentagon. I was explaining a lab in to my Biology students. My assistant principal entered my classroom and asked to speak to me in the hallway. As I left my classroom and followed her into the hall, she immediately burst into tears. She could barely explain to me what had happened through her tears. She came to me not long after the plane flew into the Pentagon. I stood there speechless for quite some time. I didn't know what I should say or how I should act. All I knew was that I was scared but I couldn't show my fear to the 30 teenagers in my classroom. I collected my thoughts, comforted my administrator, took a deep breath and went back into my classroom to continue my lesson. I knew that my students needed routine. I knew I needed that as well. I continued the rest of my day teaching my lesson plan - sneaking glances at CNN.com or watching the television in between classes, during lunch and planning period and at the end of the day. My fiance and I had planned to go to Scotland for our honeymoon. After 9/11 I did not feel comfortable getting on a plane and flying over the Atlantic Ocean. We postponed a trip to Scotland and went to Disney World instead. It took me sometime to get on a plane and fly anywhere. But I finally did when I went on my honeymoon, almost a year later. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the people that perished should definately be remembered. Innocent people lost their lives and they should never be forgotten. I also think that the spirit Americans showed should be remembered. The principal at my school gave all the teachers American flag pins. I wore/wear mine on my lanyard, displaying my American pride. I'm only 26 and I often wondered what patriotism was really like. I was alive during the Persian Gulf War, but I didn't totally understand it or even keep up with it. As an adult, I understand perfectly. And I display my pride - by posting the flag outside of my house and wearing the pin daily. The American flag is a symbol of the blood of our forefathers that died so that our country could live on and we could enjoy freedom. It is an emblem of the liberities we enjoy and it should be respected by all Americans. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was late to work that morning. Driving down Rt 24 towards Boston with my best friend. We heard on the radio that a plane had crashed, and thought nothing of it...a little while later we arrived at work and began our daily routine. All of a sudden it was as if the world stopped, and there where whispers of another plane crash. From that moment on, what is normally a busy environment turned disturbingly somber. We all listened. Everyone. Noones phone rang, noone answered e-mails, noone did anything but listen...and wait. After what seemed like eternity it was lunch time. Noone left, noone ate. We all gathered around the closest TV or media link we could find to hear...anything. Anything, something, whatever anyone could tell us in regard to the recent tragedy we'd heard. My life has changed in more ways then I could have ever imagined. I cannot drive down a highway without seeing an American Flag...something I have not been accustomed to as an american born citizen. My boyfriend, and best friend and I have become engaged...partly because we were 'jolted' into the realization that nothing lasts forever, and partly because we do not want to spend another moment of our lives not telling each other or showing each other how deeply we care for each other. Our story is not uncommon. I know that. I have heard that many couples pledged their allegiance to each other after this attack. We are special because we, and everyone else like us represent what America...the World, should represent, and that's Love, Kindeness, and respect for Human Life. The millions of people around the world who gave their support, and more then anything, we should always remember that the world outside of the US is different. There will always be some foreign group that beleives it can throttle the heart of our land, and will always try. I woke up around three or four, to find out Dad was downstairs watching TV, because he also couldn't sleep. We sat there and started flipping channels. We live in Washington, so I don't remember how early it was here when the news casts out of NY started. All I really remember is my eyes just filling with tears when they started talking about the first World Trade Center Tower going down. It was so quiet in the living room, I could hear us both breathing, and when the second hit, I just started to sob. I couldn't believe how it could happen. I had to go to school that morning, and everyone at the community college was walking around, just... listless. I fight to retain tolerance, dignity, and a spirit of fairness in my community. I don't want the loss our country suffered to be an exscuse to be cruel and degrading to others, either because of their skin color or their demand that we stay true to what America should be-a country that is just, fair, and free. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That while we have lost our innocence, and some of our arrogance, we have gained wisdom. I think many of our countries actions have been horrific, but I hope we can step away from that in the future, that we can discontinue war, and strive for peace. September 11th is one more day of loss, of mourning, that should encourage us to seek peace. Be it in the boundaries of our country, or internationally, we must seek peace to find it. We flew an American flag in the front yard starting that week. It's funny, but I hope you don't mind me telling a story. The only flag in our house is my grandfather's, from his funeral. We felt strange about the thought of flying his memorial flag, so we went to Costco, of all places. My mother and I brought the flag home, and laughed till we cried. Our American flag was made in Asia, which at the time, seemed to be a strange spot of humor in such a horrible time. That flag is still in our front yard on holidays where we see fit to fly it, to show that we are still behind our country. My feelings about the flag itself haven't changed much. It still says America to me, tells me we're united under the red, white and blue. But the commercialism of the flag after September 11th has made me ill. Patriotism is not about buying a flag-colored swimsuit or Liberty Statue band-aids. It's about a deep and abiding love for our country and its principles. As long as we stand by our founding principles, we still have a hope to be free. Even though we were very far away - leaving Luxemburg for Belgium on vacation, we were completely numbed. We were in the train, when a woman had a radio to her ear and had a horrified look on her face, but we were oblivious until we reached our hotel and saw CNN on TV. Then it was the strangest experience. Normally these terrible attacks are in some very distant place and one reads about it from home with a sense of guilt but security. This time, we were far away and it was back home where the insecurity was. And strangely too, we really felt that we wanted to...be back home. In Europe, people on the street and the media we were exposed to were sympathetic and supportive. It seems that for many people the sense of loss and shock is gone and they are moving on. But I still struggle with the whole experience and feel that my sense of security is really divided into the simple life 'before' and the realization of 'after'. I will never forget. I witnesed this history sitting in my bed.I found out because i was watching TV.I saw this on TV beacuse i live in Indonesia and the time is different so that is were i saw it.I was very suprised by it!When i first saw it i can remmeber saying what the hell is a movie doing on CNN. To later find out it was not a movie but a real expeerience.I think that the world stopped turning for a few minutes while these attacks happened.I think that most people were very mad or sad about these attacks.Although personally i think there is a very small amount of the world that was happy about the attack and it made them feel better.That is surely not the case with me.I have realatives who live in NYC and they witnessed that attacks live.I think for the most part i was just stunned.The next day i thought about it breifly how would the US retaliate to the attacks?I though about it for 2 minutes and let it pass.BUt then again that night i was checking my mail and i really thought about it and thought it could start a whole war.Only to find the truth out three or four days later.We had gotten a call that said they US has bombed Afghanistan and then i knew it was going to be bad.That would open the world to a whole nother world of attacks warfare and so on. I work at Henry County Medical Center in Paris, TN. I am in outpatient surgery. We had a busy schedule that day. One of my frllow workers came and told me that one of the twin towers were on fire. I truely did not think too much about it. We were busy and had several patients to take care of. Then she said a plane was involved. Every nutse was watching tv and attempting to keep up with the news. I was standing in front of a patients tv when the second plane hit, when the towers each fell and when all of the events unfolded. It was so tramatic, you could not move from the set. Every room had the news on. Surgery was calling and wanting to know the events since they had no tv in OR. It was devasting. I know just watching it was horrible. It totally consumed the day, week, months and the yeats that lay ahead, I will never forget where I was or even what room I was in that tragic day. We had spent the evening in our motor home at Homolovi Ruins State Park in Arizona, and were planning to tour part of the Hopi Indian Reservation on 9/11. I turned on the television set and found myself looking at a Tom Clancy novel. It took me several moments to realize this was real. I woke my wife, and we sat in silence as we watched the first tower collapse. I had to leave. I took the dog outside shortly before my wife announced the second one had gone down. I am somewhat reluctant to travel by airplane and when I do, find myself irritated for no good reason. My stock holdings have gone downhill, and my retirement has turned into something not so pleasant. I hold a bitterness toward our elected leaders that will not go away. Not only should re remember the people who died on this day, we should remember a bureaucracy who was to busy covering its tail to protect the citizens it did not represent. 9/11 should not only be remembered as a "day of infamy", but also should teach all of us to never let our guard down again. Should teach us to try to understand people that are not like us, and help us teach them that we are not the people they perceive us to be. What should be remembered are the innocent victims of all violence, the relatives of those who died on 9/11, and the tens of thousands of people who die yearly because of foreign embargos, occupations and wars. At the time, I was in Nashville, TN., enroute to Detroit. MI. The bus driver notified the passengers of the attacks. A feeling of disbelief overtook everyone. It was an eerie feeling to think that there were no flights taking off, anywhere in the country. I couldn't believe what was happening. But, we as a nation, cannot afford to be intimidated by terrorists. If we bow to their demands, then they are the victors and we are the cowards. There is an obvious need for stricter enforcement in security, regardless of the mode of transportation. We are all vulnerable. None of us are exempt from future attacks, but, we must go on with our lives. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Those innocent young people. The ability for those parents to spend time with their children and families, is a thing of the past now. The loss of those people in such a violent and senseless manner, is staggering to think about. The fact that this is an unbelievably strong and powerful nation comes forth to my mind. As a result of what happened on that day, we came closer as a nation, realizing that life is fragile and very short. We take our liberties, freedoms, and standards of living, for granted. We are not all aristocrats, but, we are a proud, God-fearing nation. God blessed us with the greatest nation on earth. As proud as I've always been to be an American, I'm even more proud now of our country and the fact that we NOW have a God-fearing president in office, who is not afraid or offended to proclaim his beliefs in our Lord. We may be strong as a nation, but, unless we turn this country back over to The Lord, we will not survive as a Christian nation. My 3 year old son came in to my room to tell me that there was a building on fire on the Sesame Street show. Confused and still groggy from sleeping I came out and recognized that it was one of the towers. I just stood there in disbelief at how a plane could go so off course and hit the building. That was when I saw the second plane hit. My son was asking what was wrong and my 1 year old daughter had just woke up. I changed the channel to a more kid friendly program and went in to my bedroom to wake my husband up and tell him what was happening. My husband is a Auxilary Police officer here in NY and immediately was called to work. The whole rest of the day and night was spent with him out patrolling the streets and possible target sites while I sat home clutching my 2 children. I had found out on Sept 9th that I was pregnant with our 3rd child. While sitting there listening and watching everything that was happening on teh news and radio I couldn't help crying and feeling such a great loss for all those innocent people. I was in 2nd hour class when all of a sudden the principal walked into the classroom and asked to speak to the teacher. So, they left out into the hallway. When the teacher came back, she told us the news, and we were all devistated. So, we all piled into the classroom next to us, because it was the only room with a TV in the hallway. I was preparing to go to the funeral of a lovely family friend who had been killed the previous Friday in a tragic horse riding accident. It was altogether a dreadful day. My father, was 75, sat there and cried and said, "The world has gone mad." At that time, we didn't yet know that we were to lose several family friends. It's so easy now to be overcome with emotion when thinking about the senselessness and evil of this act. My country is at war and it is a war not of our choosing. We will never be the same here. I know a lot of people who served overseas and all of them said something to the effect of, "Well, now Americans know how the rest of the world feels. This is the way things are." Well I don't agree with that. The rest of the world shouldn't have allowed terrorism to continue for so long. As usual, it will take the Americans to set this problem right. And we will do it. That hatred and revenge are terrible emotions and resulted in thousands of innocent lives to be lost and thousands of innocent children to lose a parent or loved one. But Americans need to be more aware of the rest of the world. There is widespread hunger and poverty beyond our understanding all around us and we continue on our merry way. This doesn't work as we have now witnessed. This breeds hatred and contempt. We need to find a way to reach out to those that hate us and help them to understand that we are not bad. The problem is, though, that we allow American corporations and the government to do really stupid and harmful things around the world with no repercussions. To many bad things are done in the name of "progress". This is really greed. We cannot continue to exploit people and expect them to like us. As a people, we are very good but our institutions let us down too often. People should pay attention to what we are doing around the world and they should protest when it isn't right (and voting would be a good idea also). I it was first period, and my teacher stepped out of the room. She came back in and told us about the first plane. She turned on CNN. The picture was fuzzy, someone had to keep moving the cable so we could see. The bell rang and we had to move on to switch classes. My teacher in 2nd period had no idea. Even when we told her she didn't understand it was an attack; she tried to teach. Once she stepped out of the room, we turned the TV just in time to see about the Pentagon and the collapse of Tower 2. No one thought they would fall, but after that, they new that it was only a matter of time before the other one. I remember at lunch that day in the courtyard of the school; it was so quiet. Know one knew what to say really. We all acknowledge what we saw, kept repeating things over and over trying to make sense. The rest of that day I spent with my classmates, watching fuzzy pictures of the towers, the pentagon, and the explosions. When I got home my family didn't know what to do. We all had diner and then we retreated to our respective rooms; we all had that same need to be alone and think. That night, I'll always remember. I was so happy to go to bed. That day was finally over. It seemed like it had lasted for so long. I'll never remember that brief feeling of relief I had as I was able to fall asleep that night, knowing exactly where all my family and friend were. I learned from a co-worker that a plane hit the World Trade Center Tower. Our organization has televisions in the lobby, so, I was able to see the news as it was being reported. As a group of us watched the smoke and flames from the first tower, we were shocked. It looked like a movie. But, minutes later, we witnessed the second plane strike the other tower. We couldn't believe it. But, I soon realized that this was more than a terrible accident. I felt we were being attacked. Then came the reports about the other events in Pennsylvania and The Pentagon. We heard so many rumors that we didn't know exactly what to do. As one of the few officers in the office, I broke the news to other staff and tried to keep everyone calm. At the same time, I tried to get some instructions from our Executive Director, who was out of town at the time. We finally received instructions to leave the building (of course, some had already made up their minds to leave). I used our courtesy telephone to call my husband, who was at home with all three of our children. I was the last one to leave the office at 11:10am. All cell phone activity was shut down throughout the area. I remember joining the hundreds of people walking down the sidewalks. The traffic was horrendous. People were looking up in the sky, as if someone else in another plane might attack at any moment. I struck up a conversation with a young woman whom I learned was going in the same direction towards Southeast Washington, DC. Some streets were blocked, which created tremendous detours for us. We were afraid of taking the subway, so we walked almost all the way home. I was wearing 2-1/2 inch heels, and my feet were killing me. All I know is that I walked all but ten blocks to get home to my family, especially my husband. We were to celebrate his 44th birthday. By the time I got home, I could do nothing but thank God for getting me home safely, hug my family, check on other family members, and watch the event continue to unfold on cable news. It was a most devastating time, full of sadness, shock, and uncertainty. I don't know if I'm over this yet. I just go on because I don't know what else to do. Everyone I know still talks about it as if it happened yesterday. I know it has changed my life forever. And, to think it only used to be my husband's birthday... I started running to the office so that I could use the phone, got to the office dropped my bag rush to the phone and completly forgot the number,one of my co-worker came over and dialed for me, when he answered I said, PLEASE TELL ME SHE DID NOT GO TO WORK TODAY, He said she went, and she just called and was crying and telling him that a plane just crashed in tower one and she was ok.
