I witnessed history on September 11th when I was walkin out of my 2ed period class,someone said out loud a plane had hit one of the twin towers.I was thinking this it was a bad accident.When I got to my 3ed period class the T.V. was on cnn and I saw one of the towers with a hole in it on fire.At the time is was still thinking a plane went off course and hit into the tower.Right agter i thought that, another plane hit the other tower.After this i knew for sure it was terrorism.As I saw the other plane hit I could see people jumping out of windows taking their own lives, Because they thought they were going to die anyway.Then a couple of minutes later one of the tower collapsed on poeple,cars and trucks around the base. I live in England and on September 11th 2001 I had just got home from shopping, it was about 2.30, the children were due home at 3. I turned on the tv and saw the aeroplane crashing into the twin towers, then the second plane. It was on every channel, I stared in shock and horror and my first thought was, "Oh my God, my sisters there." You see my sister Becky Wood was supposed to be in New York that day to return home from a long trek across America.I remember just sitting and crying and then phoning my mum who told me that the last she heard from Becky was when she was at the pentagon the previous day on a sight seeing trip. My tv was on all day and it wasn't till early evening that I had the phone call to say that she was alive but stranded in New York. I remember thinking that so many people had been affected by that day and I felt for them all. It was an agonising few days before my sister was back in England.Their tour guide had stuck with the group despite having lost contact with his own family. The most eerie thing was the next day, standing in my back garden, looking up in the sky and seeing no aeroplanes, the skies were absolutely silent. I would have thought there would have been an International day of Remembrance as it affected so many people, but as far as I am aware there is nothing. In this country we have poppy day in November to remember those who died in the war, why can't we have a September 11th day. I am doing this to remember in my own way. I was in the middle school and students were getting called out of class all day. So of course everyone was wondering what was going on. So when the principle of the school came on to tell us what had happened i automatically thought of my godmother, Julie. Who works in the city. When i got home from school i quickly called my mom and asked if she had heard from Julie. When she said that she hadn't. My heart just sank. I didnt know what to do. Then she had told me that she we had a relative that worked in the trade centers. I didnt know what to do. So the rest of the time i sat in front of hte television just wondering why someone would so just a DUMB thing! All i was concerned about was getting whoever had dont this to us. I wanted him to feel the pain that he put all of those people through, And now 1 year later and we still haven't found him makes me feel like our country didnt protect us. I woke up on that morning from the loudness of the television, got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. Breakfast wasn't ready yet, so I thought I'd see what my mom was watching. My mom was so into ti and I still didn't get it. I watched for a while, and BOOM! a tower was hit. I finally understood. I was a little scared for the people that I way jumping out of windows that were on the 100th floor, but also a little excited about what was going on. I wasn't excited like... happy, more like wondering what was gonna happen. When I finally got to school, I got more information. I didn't see the towers fall, but when I got home I turned on the news and they were re-showing what happened. Then I understood it all. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was working at a local high school when news came in that 1 of the Twin Towers was hit. Immediately the televisions throughout our school went on and stayed on that entire day to witness the terrible injustice done to innocent people. Tears were shed along with questions as to why and how this could have happened. The days following were probably the most upsetting to me as reality finally set in that so many lives were lost and changed that day. I will always remember that day and the days that followed as on of the most terrible I have lived through as an American. Those people who lost their lives will never be forgotten. But, also a great sense of pride was with me those days as I witnessed Americans coming together as never before. We visited the traveling exhibition today and it all came back, again the tears flowed. I hope that my grandchildren will grow up in a world that is full of hope, not terror. We were watching the news live while the first tower was burning. Then just before I left to go to school I saw the second plane hit. I had no idea that the towers had fell until 3:00pm that day. I was in second period literature when the principal came over the intercom and told all of the teachers not to turn on their tv's until futher notice. We were all scared by the tone of the principal's voice,so we asked what had happened and our 2nd period teacher did not want to tell us.I did not find out until 3rd period at P.E. that 2 planes had crashed into the World Trade Center causing the first tower to collapse.Then,when I got home my parents were all worried and there was nothing else on t.v. accept what had happened that day.Then, for the next several days friends of mine were crying because someone in their family died . Durring scond period, in Ms. Molan's class, I was simply doing my work when an annoucment came on. It was Mr. Spears, my principal. "Please do not turn on your telivisions untill this event is over. Thank you." Everyone startedto talk. What did he mean? What was going on? As soon as the bell rung, everyone started to talk and rumers were spreading. Was it true? Did two planes run into the Twin Towers? I didn't belive it at first. It is still hard to belive. Of course, as soon as our principal said not to turn on out T.V.'s, every teacher in the intire school did. In the next class we all watched the events unfold. It was unbelivable. I would say the moment it became the most realalistic would be when my mom left. My mother, Donna Mason-Smith, got the call to go to New York. My mother is a fire fighter, a parametic, and works with DMAT. DMAT is the Disaster Medical Alert Team. They go to any place were extra help is needed. My mother when to New York to give medical assistance to the workers. The pain and missery that she saw and told of was unbeliveable, but so was the dedication, determination, pride, and honor of working for America. When my mother came home, she broght back alot. She brought back wisdom, understanding, hope, and tears. She had gone through an unbelivable stressful event which she will never forget, nor will I. She has a piece of the Twin Towers from the rubble. A chunk of marble, filled with hopes and dreams, memories and loses. Everyone was affected by this event, and it is hard for me to tell in words how much this effected my family. I am only a 14 year old boy with little experiances, but I will try to offer the world my little experiance and knowledge I have. God Bless America. One of the things a courier does is hold a place i8n line for Congressional hearings for those who would rather not get in line a day or more before in order to get a seat at an important hearing. On September 11, 2001, I had been holding a spot since 5 am for a 10 o'clock hearing in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The client arrived at 9:45 and told me things were happening. At that moment the order came to evacuate the building. I had another stand starting at 11 am in the Rayburn House Office Building and proceeded over there on my bicycle. At First Street and Independence Avenue SE there was a road block on First Street south of Independence Avenue with a policeman on duty. While I was waiting for a green light, he repeatedly shouted at me not to run the roadblock and I repeatedly signaled a left turn onto Independence Avenue to no avail. When the light turned green I made my turn and stopped out of sight of the policeman in order to call dispatch on my mobile phone. As in the blackout August 15, 2003, my phone didn't work. All circuits were busy. As in the blackout, my RIM pager did work, and dispatch told me to forget the 11 o'clock stand and head home. The route home took me through the park between Union Station and the Capitol. It was packed with evacuees from Union Station. I came across Teresa, a fellow line stander and chatted with her for a few minutes. Meanwhile, a lady with a radio announced that one of the towers had collapsed. Teresa is a veteran of Vietnam and the Gulf War, retired from the Army. She takes nothing from anybody. During the Gulf War, her unit had ptiched camp when an Arab officer told Teresa that she should run some barbed wire around her camp to keep his men out. She told that officer that HE should run some barbed wire around HIS camp to keep his men in. Shortly after I left, a policeman found an unattended package and bellowed, "get the ((*&%$%$^&&^^&$ out of my park!!!!! Teresa demanded his name and he would not give it. Instead he made a series of threats whereupon Teresa opened her back pack, pulled out pencil and paper and proceeded to write down the threats. She then located a supervisor and told him she wasn't complaining, but if someone did, he would have his evidence. Meanwhile, I had to walk my bike through the crowds for three blocks before I could find room on either the street ot the sidewalk. Meridian Hill in 16th Street normally has very light pedestrian trafic and is a favorite route for bicycles. On September 11, 2001, however, it was as crowded as any downtown sidewalk. People were walking home. Motor vehicle traffic was gridlocked and all public transit had been suspended. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. September 11, 2001 wasn.t the end of it. There was the anthrax menace, and Teresa was exposed to it and was treated. Fall out from these events continues to this day. The city lost a lot of tourist business. The messenger industry in Washington is highly dependent on Capitol Hill. Daily, there were distributions, i. e. deliveries to every congressman and senator on the hill. Such a job could easily pay one or two hundred dollars. These have ceased, since all deliveries still have to go to Ohio for decontamination. Some deliveries get through, but the addressee has to come out to get it; the messenger can't go in. On September 11th when the first plane hit I was sitting in math class doing my daily assignment when my math teacher Mr. Wong came in and told us that two planes had hit the World Trade Center. I was supposed to go to class on the morning of Sept. 11, but then my teacher called and told me to stay home. She told me of frightening stories about Muslims working in Washington D.C. being harassed. After the phone call, I immediately turned on the TV and gaped at the horrifying scene like many other Americans. For several weeks, my dad, who's in the U.S. Air Force, warned my mom and I not to go anywhere. He especially warned us not to go to commissary at Fort Belvoir, VA. The servicemen over there wouldn't be happy to see two women wearing hijab shopping alongside them. I felt helpless staying at home. Like many others, I wanted to reach out and help. So a couple of months later, I organized a blood drive in my neighborhood to honor the victims of 9/11 and to help patients when there was a blood shortage at the local hospital. I was sitting in the middle of English class when an older student came running into the classroom and asked to turn on the T.V. Then, my teacher explained to us what was going on, and turned on the T.V. We watched news for most of my classes in school to see what was all happening. I watched on live news as the other towers collapsed. I remember thinking how awful it was, and it seemed like it wasn't even happening in real life. It was hard for me to understand how something like that could just happen, and how so many innocent people could just get killed like that. It was a very emotional day at my school, and at home. I was at my office, 140 WEST STREET, 19 floors up when the planes hit the Twin Towers. At first I could not believe what I was seeing but reality sunk in when I watch five innocent people fall backwards and plunge to their deaths. Two of the five I'll never ever forget because one landed beside the fire truck in the street and just disappeared into a red spot. The second was even worse because she landed on top of Six World Trade (Federal Custom House)and just disappeared into a red spot. Nothing resembled a human being or form. These "FIVE" I call them are most likely some of the one that would never be identified because the Towers later fell on top of where they landed. I was there and in the street after I left my building in search of my wife, when Tower Two came down first. I knew then that there could be no one alive. My wife had found me up at Penn Station. We got home and that when I cried. And till this day still cry, but in private. I had written an eulogy for my Trade Center, which I just submitted to this site and had sent it to the White House after I had written it. Seems like little petty stuff just doesn't get its place in my life anymore. I have become aggressive. The first thing that I personally will all way remember is the "FIVE" and "My Trade Center". The five people that I had witness their deaths are unknown to me, but to be able to remember them, I gave them each a name in the order that they perished. "ROB". "ARTHUR". "JOHN". "BILL". and "LORETTA". There is a small memorial at the bottom of my lawn in remembrance of them with an American Flag for each, one with a pink ribbon for Loretta. I also had made a replica of the Trade Center that has been there for almost the whole year. The replica will be removed after September 11, 2002, but not the FLAGS of the FIVE. I feel that we should remember all those who lost their lives that day in a memorial that would look similar to the Baseball Hall of Fame at Coopertown, N. Y., but mostly we should remember and pray for all those who were left behind when their loved ones were taken from them. Their pain will never go away for as long as they live , but we should pray that their pain will lessen over time without feeling guilty about it and to remember their loved ones for what and who they were in their lives and to always remember them as Heroes who went to work that day and died for Freedoms Sake and not for nothing. Whether they were Male or Female. Young or Old. Children to Adults. These people that day were U. S. Soldiers of Freedom. It was early in the morning, maybe 3am? and my partner's sister phoned to say that her husband (who was working in Germany) had just called her to tell her there had been a terrorist attack in America. I was still half asleep, my heart racing as it does when the phone rings during the middle of the night, and I remember not comprehending what she was saying. "Turn on the TV", Erika said. "You can see it". "Which station?", I asked. "Any station. It's on every station". How could that be? Nothing was ever televised on every station. I was sitting in TAAS MATH and he had turned on the t.v. to watch the news to find out about the weather... Then it happened, it was terrible I looked up and the twin towers was just now getting hit by the terrorists plane... Yes my life has changed a great deal since that horrible day, September 11,2001, was the day that my whole life turned upside down...I hated watching that t.v. from, 3rd period all the way too 7th period we watched the t.v. now I know that we are never gonna be in peace with Ben again... I think that the loving people that just had to die in the twin towers and the pentagon should be remembered cause of someones foolish acts peoples lives have been changed for ever... Till this day i pray every night and also tell all my friends that i love them, cause you might never get the chance to tell them... One day their here and the next they can de gone... Yes,i flew one out side on my porch... I hung one in my room and it's still hanging till this day... And my mother put one on her car along with some stickers... Thx for all that yall have done...
