<text>Like most people in the Eastern part of the country (with me being in the Southeast), I noticed what a beautiful day it was. I had just dropped my children off at school and felt a little lonely since my husband was in Chicago on business. As I started my morning cleaning routine in the kitchen I turned on the small 13" tv to catch up on the news. Fox News was talking about how a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center and it must have been a horrible accident. As I watched as the reporter was on the roof somewhere showing the towers in the background, I saw a plane coming up behind the reporter off in the distance. I had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, but was hoping it was just a plane on the way to one of the NY airports. But, sadly, it wasnt. As the reporter was talking, the other plane crashed into the other tower. I felt myself getting lightheaded, and a feeling of disbelief came over me. I was wondering when the ad for the movie was over.
Then, I realized again that my husband was not home. I got sick at my stomach. I called him, he was safe in Chicago, but didnt know when he could get home as all the airports were on lockdown at that time. We would talk later when he knew more.
My daughter called from her school. She was crying hysterically. She thought her Daddy might be on one of those planes. I reassured her he was fine, but I went to the school to pick her up, as were most parents. My kids came home that day....we stayed inside all day despite the beautiful weather...scared of the unknown.
My husband returned home late Thursday night. He was finally able to find a rental car.
We were all in shock...</text>

<text>I woke up in the morning and came out into my living room. After noticing the horror on the faces of my two sisters and parents, I asked what was wrong. My mother explained to me that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. The second tower had not been hit yet when i woke up. My family sat around the television not wanting to know what would happen next, but we were attatched to it. Then about 5 or 10 minutes later, we witnessed the second tower being struck. This was when reality set in for me. I then watched the news for a little longer until i had to go to school. Despite reality setting in, I was still in a state of shock. When I got to school I informed some people of what I knew and talked about it with others. In all of my classes that day we talked about the events that occured in the morning. After the day was over, I still hadn't come out of shock and had also moved into the state of sadness and mourning for all of the people that died.</text>

<text> I was in the eighted grade,at 13 years old, when September 11 happened. I started school like any other day. Once I got to my first period, it felt weird. I just don't know how to describe that feeling. You know something is wrong, but you don't really know what it is.
Once I got to my second period, Mrs. LaRuffa said that there was something up, but she was told that she was not allowed to tell us. She also said that our parents have to tell us on our own. The rest of the day went normal. I still had that feeling every where I went. I never would have thought that the whole country would remember that day forever.
As soon as I got home, I turned on the TV and all I could see was a black fog. I flipped to another channel, all of them had the same thing. At that time, I still had no idea. I listened and saw the playbacks. I couldn't believe it! It was like something you would see on a movie. I had no idea of terrorist, so I didn't who would do such a thing. It seemed very unreal.
That brought our nation together, as we tried to find survivers. I realized that George W. Bush was a good president after all.(I never was happy that he was elected.) In the end, it all turned out good. We don't have the twin towers anymore, but its still a great place to visit!</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="603578">
<text>I was checking my email on September 11th, sitting in my cube at the Air Force office I supported. As a defense contractor, I work in Alexandria with AF officers and support a bigger directorate at the Pentagon. Although we're often at the Pentagon for briefs or meetings, our office is in two large buildings leased by the DoD. The network administrator - affectionately known as the 'high-tech redneck' for his computer support with a southern drawl - ran in and told us about the trade centers.

We were confused, but quickly tried to check CNN.com and debated what had happened. Was it an accident? Was it terrorists? Who was next? One officer said, "If I was in the Pentagon, I'd get the f*** out of there." I thought he was silly. The trade centers were obviously a financial target and I thought I would evacuate any building of trade or commerce. He is the intell guy, and I'm not - for obvious reasons.

I tried to get on the phone to my sister. I figured she could watch TV for me, since our internet connection was not working well. My sister wouldn't get out of bed, "Amanda! I have class in two hours!" but finally pulled herself upstairs to the TV in my parents' home. Once she turned on the tv, she realized how serious it was.

Meanwhile, the ranking officers were on travel that day, and a few mid-level guys decided we should call the Pentagon and figure out what to do. When nobody answered at our directorate's office, two coworkers ran out of the building to get into the gym and see an up-to-the-minute CNN report. They didn't get very far, because the smoke was already coming from the Pentagon.

They ran back in the office, and all I heard was "The Pentagon's been hit! We're being attacked!" I told my sister I had to go because we decided to evacuate. I ran out of the building in my navy suit with red blouse and navy shoes. I'll never forget the fact that I was wearing patriotic colors that day - and I felt like I shouldn't for a while after that lest I create bad luck.

Once I turned the corner of the building, I started shaking. The sky was perfect blue and the smoke was so black. I've never seen smoke that black and I thought the whole Pentagon must be gone.

My cell phone began ringing like crazy - everyone back home in Wisconsin and Minnesota wanted to know I wasn't at the Pentagon. My former boss called - I told her I had to get my sister on the phone again. My best friend from college called - sobbing "Amanda are you okay? I'm so scared!" My mom heard the news and called my sister; since I wasn't on the phone anymore they both became worried. Mom panicked, thinking I was at the Pentagon in her confusion, and drove home from her work.

My sister and I reconnected while I was on the beltway driving home and watching the sky for planes. I was convinced there might be more looking for targets. My sister gave me every detail of the towers collapsing . . . "oh my God, it looks like they're exploding. Oh my God, they fell down. Amanda, they fell down." I arrived in my apartment, but I did not have a television so my sister kept repeating what she heard on the news word for word. My mom finally got on the phone and I don't know what she said because she was breathing too hard and sobbing.

I almost cried then, but I was too shaky.

I ran to the leasing office to watch a tv, but they didn't have one. "Don't you work there?" they asked "Yes," I said and walked out of the building.

Then I started picturing all the faces of my friends and coworkers and I wondered who was dead. And I kept shaking. It wasn't like a quick shiver or even chattering teeth. It was a constant, low-level quiver that wouldn't stop. I guess they call it terror for a reason.

I went back to my apartment, but I couldn't stand not being around people and I didn't have any news. The internet was clogged and my two neighbor girlfriends were still at work. I decided to go to my company worksite. I felt guilty leaving my apartment, because my grandma had asked me to stay home and stay safe. I decided to call my sister and tell her what I was doing in case family called and panicked again.

Traffic was terrible by then and I fought my way to the company site. I was afraid to park in the garages because I thought they might collapse on me if someone set off a truck bomb. I was afraid to go up in the elevators in case we got attacked and I couldn't get out. I was afraid to be on the seventh floor because I couldn't run out of the building as fast. I just couldn't stop shaking. We watched a little more of CNN and then had a meeting.

I don't remember the rest of the day at all. I don't know how I got home, when I got home, or what I did. I just remember that at 7 pm I finally was able to log onto my internet account and I saw the wreckage at the Pentagon. Then I started crying and I really didn't stop until November for more than a few hours at a time. I pictured all my friends and all my coworkers. In the end I would find out how lucky I was - nobody had died that I knew personally - but that night I made a mental list over and over again of all the people I had to pray for. It was impossible to stop shaking.

That night I finally fell asleep and when I woke up in the morning I really thought "I hope that didn't happen." It did, and I started shaking again on my way to work. But, I had to go because Secretary Rumsfeld said the DoD was back in business and I wanted to be tough.

Do you know what comforted me? I saw a mini-van on the way to work, and it reminded me of family and for some reason I felt better. After all, if mini-vans were out on the road, then family people were out on the road and things must be a little safer. It's crazy to think that helped, but it did and sometime that morning I stopped shaking.

Of course, my eye started twitching next. That happens if you cry all the time - and I did. I became obsessesed with checking the news reports on the internet and I cried every time I read one. It was a silent cry in my cubicle, but it was constant. I held it together until I would drive home and then I would sob all the way home. I think God sent an angel to drive my car for those weeks. My eye finally stopped twitching as I got myself back to the gym to work out some stress, but my hair fell out in abnormal amounts a few weeks later. I heard that happens after periods of tension.

So that is how September 11 happened to me. I am not going to cry this September, because I spent all last Fall being sad. I am still very angry but I decided to focus on what God has given me this year: perspective, a cancer-free Dad, two close girlfriends expecting their first child, and a career ahead of me protecting American freedoms.</text>

At first I thought that it was an accident. I turned on the television to see what was going on. After a few min. as I watched the second plane hit.Everything started comeing together in my mind that this was not an accident, but that the buildings were being hit on purpose. I yelled to my brother to turn on his TV.We were glued to the TV'S all day long, me watching MSNBC and my brother on CNN. Our country was under attack, I was terrified. Knowing all the people who were dieing in the towers was to much to bear. The hate and the anger for those who did this will never leave me. My prayers go out to those who lost loved ones. I still cry when I watch programs dealing with 9-11. I will " NEVER FORGET ".</text>

Then my mom came to pick me up and I went home and watched on TV in disbelief that the World Trade Center collapsed. I didn't know what to think or how to feel. About three hours later, I realized what had really happened. So many families had lost loved ones and so many firemen who shouldn't of died risked their own life for these people. I really can't comprehend how all this happened in such a little amount of time that can change the world forever. Today I still can't understand how these people could ever want to kill so many people. God Bless them!</text>

<text>I had been enjoying a long summer vacation, visiting my family in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and was getting ready to go back home to Washington, D.C. (I live in Alexandria, VA.)
My mother and I had gone shopping at the Maine Mall in Portland the evening of Sept. 10, and we had been talking about my departure back to the "big" city and how different life was there. My mother was so concerned for my safety in D.C. and compared to the way life is in Cape Elizabeth, she had a perfect right to fret. After all, my mother hardly ever locks her front door! The neighbors all look out for each other, and it's one of the safest places I've ever known. I remember getting up that morning, pouring my first cup of coffee and settling down on the couch to read that morning paper. Mornings were always so calm here in Maine. Someone had the National Public Radio station on and classical music wafted through the air. Suddenly- The News. We rushed to turn on the television- which was very unusual. The TV hardly got turned on all summer. We had instead embraced a summer of reading and playing games or walking on the beach. It was so surreal- watching what really looked like a horror movie. And then the Pentagon was hit- I was horrified. Reality hit hard. I was immediately on the phone trying to get through to friends I knew back in D.C. fearing the worst. Also, calling family on Long Island, New York, hoping no one had taken a trip downtown to Manhattan that day. But what really struck me, the next day, was the photograph on the front page of the local Portland newspaper of the two hijackers that had spent the night at a hotel in Portland the night before. The video surveillance camera at the Portland airport had captured the image of those two men just before they had embarked on their suicide mission to turn life in America upside down. Mom and I had driven right past that hotel that night coming home from the Mall. We had been in the midst of Evil. Suddenly, I knew my feeling of safety and security in Cape Elizabeth, Maine- where nothing bad ever happens- was shattered forever.

It's a big empty space now. Even if and when they rebuild- it'll never be the same. I'll never fly in an airplane and feel calm again. There will always be that little question mark in the back of my mind- what would I do if the plane were hijacked? Would I be as brave as those people on flight 93?</text>

<text>I had just gotten out of class that day, and I had headed to the University Center in the center of my college at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. I knew something fishy had happened because in the post office there was an easel set up and on the easel was a cardboard sign saying that the big screen tv was on CNN in the Grand Ballroom. I was wondering why CNN would be going on in the Grand Ballroom. For a couple of days many students spent time in between classes watching CNN, but it seems like I was one of the only few that watched in the ballroom, it was very quiet in there, and it was dark and isolated. I quit watching because it only became more depressing to see the images over and over again.</text>

I think its very cool to be patriotic, and I love the flag, however personally its very old seeing mini vans driving around town with two or flags... a year or so later. Its good to have respect for your country, but it does get to the point where its getting rubbed into the ground a bit too much. The flag to me, is a symbol of our country, something you think about on 4th of July, not something that is seen at Wal-Mart on everything. I think the flag stuff is cool, I think September 11th turned the flag into a "trend" and I think many people wore the flag stuff because "everyone else" was doing it, and I think that, that is a wrong reason to be patriotic.</text>

<text>I was the Principal of the Hanson Middle School in Hanson, MA. My nurse was talking to a parent when she was told about the first plane. I turned the TV on in my office and felt what an awful accident. Within a few minutes the second plane hit and I knew it was not an accident anymore. I immediatey sent an e-mail to my staff explaining what I saw and to be sure they did not turn on any televisions or radios in the classroom, or talk about the events until my crisis team could formalize a plan. A teacher came to me paniced because her 3 children worked in the area. She went home and thankfully was able to contact them all and they were safe. Parents called to tell us their relatives that worked for the airlines were safe and could we please pass this on to the students involved. I caled each student down to tell them there had been an accident involving a plane out of Logan airport, but their family member was not involved. I continually updated my staff via e-mail and set up an area where they could see the TV without involving students. My crisis team decided that we would send the students back to their homerooms for the last 30 minutes of the day to watch the events on TV and discuss the day with their teachers. I did receive a lot of criticism from some in the community because they felt I should not have exposed the children to the events without the parents there, and the parents should have been the ones to tell them when the student arrived home. We did think of this but felt there were a number of students going home to an empty house, and it would be better if we gave them time with an adult to see the events and discuss them before they went home and saw them on TV by themselves.

Fortunately our school community did not have anyone who was lost in the tragedy, but enough area towns did realize a loss and this affected us deeply.

My student council immediately started a fundraiser and in a few days had well over $1000 that we gave to an Abington, MA family who lost their husband/dad that day. he entire school wore red, white, and blue ribbons and took part in the Presidents salute to the Flag.</text>

<text> On September 11th, I witnessed what is probably one the most disastrous events that my generation will ever see. In the morning I waited for my ride to show up, to me it was just like any other day. I knew not of the horrific acts that had taken place 3 hours before in New York City. My ride arrived and I got into the car. After a few seconds of silence the lady that was giving me a ride asked, "Have you heard?" I told her that I hadn't and she told me. I was shocked. When I arrived at school, I immediately headed to the library as usual. There was a room in the back where students were watching the news, and they played the horrible scene over and over again. Many around me were crying, and soon enough I too was crying. I never believed that anything so terrifying could occur in my lifetime. I went home early, and spent the day watching the footage as random news channels replayed it. I will never forget that day.</text>

My feelings about the flag have slightly changed, only in the idea that it is over rated. All the flags in our town sold out, you couldn't buy them anywhere. I'm not bashing the flag, but it was a waste. The money that people spent could've gone to the Red Cross for aid in the rescue effort. And, a flag flying above a house did not make the residents better people. Neighbors still ignored each other and snubbed each other.</text>

<text> I am a private vocal and piano teacher, and on the morning of that awful attack, I was in my basement, unaware of events that were happening on my TV upstairs while waiting for an adult pupil. When she came in, she was in panic, tears streaming from her eyes as she recounted what was happening in her explanation of why she couldn't possibly take her piano lesson with shaking hands and feet. Of course I agreed, and after she left hurriedly to watch and learn more, I "flew" up the stairs to see for myself. I gazed with tearful eyes and disbelief at the TV screen as the second plane hit the tower, and I watched as the other tower started to collapse. It was like watching a movie, a science fiction movie, where Men from Mars were attacking, but, to my horror, it was real.
My husband and I couldn't keep our eyes off the screen the entire day. We were horrified to hear of the attack on our Pentagon, and swelled with pride as we heard about the brave people who died while trying to subdue the terrorists on the other plane.
We were interrupted by a phone call from our daughter who told us that her dearest friend was supposed to be working in the Fitzgerald office, but, thank G-d she had decided to go into work a little late. She had arrived just as the second tower was falling. We were relieved of course, but our hearts went out to all the people who hadn't been so lucky and their families. I later wrote a song about 9/11 called "Someone's Hatred", which I performed this year with great approval from several audiences. Everyone could feel the pain. Now everytime I think of that day, I begin to cry. I'm actually starting to cry at this moment. My daughter's friend had to undergo post-traumatic counseling for several months afterward, and was receiving email from her "dead" co-workers, her friends at the office.
May there never be another day such as this one! G-d Bless America!!</text>
