NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I happened to be at home in Florida on September 11, 2001. I received a call from a friend shortly after the first plane struck the Towers, who asked me to turn on the TV and tell him what was happening. He was at work and away from a TV, and he couldnt get on any of the news websites because they were all overloaded with users logging on to fins out what happened. I turned on the TV, and to my horror, I saw one of the towers of the World Trade Center billowing out smoke. I thought that it was a terrible accident; a plane had lost control and crashed into a building in New York. As I watched the building burning, and as I commentated for my friend on the other end of the phone, I saw a live shot of the second plane crashing into the other tower. I went silent, and my friend on the other end of the phone kept asking me what was happening. After about 30 seconds I regained my ability to speak, and I told him a plane had flown right into the side of the building. Both buildings were up in flames, and I could see silhouettes of what I came to realize were people dropping to their deaths from the windows. I thought the worst was over, that the fires would burn out, but didnt think the buildings could or would come down. As I watched in horror, I went silent again as one of the towers collapsed in an enormous cloud of smoke, dust, and debris. I was still on the phone, and when I told my friend about the first collapse, I had to get off the phone because I couldnt speak any longer. The horror of the event finally started setting in, and I realized that thousands of people were now dead, and I knew that the other tower was going to collapse. I watched in horror as it collapsed, and I wondered how many more planes would strike, and how many more buildings would collapse. Then news was trickling in from the Pentagon and Southwestern PA, and I realized that the feeling of safety and security I once took for granted was now over, and that a new age of world politics, of warfare, and of diplomacy was about to begin. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My feeling of safety and security has changed. I no longer feel as safe travelling. I look around suspiciously when I am in crowded, public places. More importantly, I feel more inclined to help my fellow man; that this common national tragedy has reacquainted me with the fact that, regardless of our differences, we are all Americans, and that our ability and freedom to differ on opinions doesnt mean we arent all one, unified nation. It taught me that we need to discuss our differences with our fellow Americans while realizing that we are still a unified people who are here to enjoy and promote freedom to each other and the rest of the world. I believe we should remember the victims, their families, and all those who are still suffering through this terrible event. I think people should remember the horror and the fear we all felt on that horrifying morning so that we remain steadfast and unified in our responsibility to protect ourselves. Lastly, we should all remember the way we came together, as a nation, to support each other. We should remember the outpouring of emotion from coast to coast in support of the victims and their families. I think we need to remember who is responsible for this act, and continue to pursue and disrupt any and all of their activities. I did fly an American Flag in support of the victims, their families, the relief efforts, the heroism, and our military brethren who are acting in response to these terrible actions. I have always felt the American Flag has been an enduring symbol of Freedom, of the American Spirit, and of the American Way of Life. On one hand it represents our history, our search for freedom, and the country we have built. After September 11, I believe it has come to represent our future. That future is rooted in the spirit behind the actions of the Police Departments, Transit Authority, Fire Departments, and countless volunteers and supporters from all over America. The Flag represents a new America, united in defense of our ideals, and still committed to preserving the America that we have worked so hard to build, and fought so hard to defend. It was the begganing of 3rd period as I was walking into the history classroom. My teacher had already turned on the T.V and the class was watching it. I sat down in my seat and looked up. Smoke coming out of the one toward. "Is this posible?" I thought to myself the whole time. Every channel had it on, just fliping back and forth getting different views. Then.. anoth plan. Right into the next building. The room had been silence, but then all at once there was a 'gasp' threw out the room. The whole period we just watched in amazedment over this deal. The day want on and each period we wathced it. Untill out principal came onto the loud speaker and told all the teachers to turn off the T.V's and go on like a normal old school. But how could you? My life in general wasn't really changed, but all the things around me were. New rules for everything, baseball feild, airports, even our school made new rules. Heartbroken, hurt, confused, so many feelings all boiling together at once. And now to this day, everything has more spirt, pride and togetherness or our country. I had begun a new job within the government 2 weeks before September 11, our work location being inside an old limestone mine. When a co-worker first told me of the planes hitting the WTC, I was waiting for the punchline thinking it must be some kind of a joke. I soon realized that it was no joke. Someone had called home and had their daughter put the phone by the television and then put it on speaker phone so we could all hear the tragic news. We formed a knot of people around that phone listening in horror and shock. Here we were in this cave and unable to get any sort of news other than listening to this over the phone. It was unreal and horrible. Then came the news that we were all to leave. How I drove home I still don't know. But once there, I sat as many of us did glued to the TV, sobbing for all the loss. As I realized that all non-essential government agencies had closed I sat in awe. Never had I known our government to shut down. September 11 is a day I will never forget. On the morning of September 11, 2001 I was in the library preparing lessons for the days ahead. While working, I was approached by our dean of students. It was unusual for him to be in our library at that time of day, but as he chatted a bit, he got around to asking if we could turn on the TV monitors and watch the news. We said, sure we can, but we rarely do since we're busy. He said he'd like to turn them on...he had heard something on the radio he'd like to check out. From that point on, my day turned from ordinary to unforgetable. We watched in confusion at one burning tower with a plane headed toward the second. The reports at that time were, of course, full of uncertainty and speculation. Ironically, even the newscasters were initially naive and incredulous. It was with great agony, fear, sadness that the day unfolded. That first class period ended and with it my "prep" hour; I needed to go to my classroom to face my students. I didn't even consider not turning on the television in my classroom. I needed to watch, and understand, and, also, to help a classroom full of 15-year-olds do the same. Some students had heard the news in their first period class; others hadn't. We shared what we knew for fact, wondered about all we didn't. Every single student understood the gravity of the situation without a "talk" or message from me. They asked meaningful - and heartwrentching - questions as they searched for some meaning. By the time the second tower crumbled, the enormity of the tragedy was too much for some and we could no longer hold back tears. We quickly learned how little we knew about Bin Laden, Al-quida, and Afghanistan. And how little we understood others' views of the world and of the US. As the day went on, each of my classes reacted differently. Some classes wanted to talk about what was happening, others were overwhelmed and wanted a "normal" hour of class, get another wanted "an update, please" and then quiet time to reflect in journals. If so, tell us how. On the surface our lives look much the same, I imagine. What's changed is internal: an awareness, a sadness, a sense of loss of control. I guess the positive changes are there, too. An appreciation for those who work to help others. And, also, for me there has been a stronger commitment to do more to build good in this world. I mean within our families, cities, countries, and the entire globe. We need to love more, help others, cherish life,and appreciate the heroes around us. Certainly we know evil exists and there are violent, hateful people in this world. We have learned that we must protect ourselves from that danger. Always it was my father who was the one who proudly displayed the flag for our family. He was a WWII veteran who served in Germany and his patriotism always ran deeper than mine. I think that I now understand his feelings for that great symbol. As our country was attacked, I had such strong personal feelings that it was I and my fellow citizens being terrorized. My carpool told us that there had been some sort of bombing at the World Trade Centers. I knew it was bad but not how horrible it actually turned out to be. I wrote the following account on the anniversary of September 11 as a record for my children when they get old enough to start asking questions about what happened that day. We live in Falls Church, Virginia. 09/11/02 to Isaac Today you are 17 months old, a clever, friendly, good-natured boy. Your little brother is not yet born; I am 31 weeks pregnant and can feel his strong kicks as he begins to feel cramped in his tight quarters. We are a happy little family. But today is the first anniversary of a terrible day, one that changed forever the world that you and your little brother will be growing up in. Since you were such a tiny baby when it happened I thought I would take a moment to write down what happened that day. Last September 11 began as all of our days here at home did -- you woke up around 8:30 and played quietly in your crib until I came and got you. You were 5 months old, and were going bald because you insisted on rubbing your head against the crib bumper. Your eyes were still dark blue, and we kept waiting for them to turn brown like your Mommy and Daddy's eyes... but they never did. After our morning routine I put you down in the playpen in my office, where you kept yourself occupied while I got to work. At 9:50 I got an email from Sa'id, our trusty coding supervisor. "Has the world gone mad?" he asked. I didn't know what he was talking about, so I tried to access the Washington Post online to see what was going on. Three minutes later I got an email from Denise in Indianapolis asking if we DC folks were ok, at which point I stopped trying to get to the swamped Post website. I picked you up and went into the living room of our Pinecastle house and turned on CNN. I held you tightly on my lap, watching in horror. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were hit, and we watched live pictures of the smoke pouring out from them into the sky. And then the first tower fell. I held you tightly and cried; all I could think about was how huge that building was and how many people must have been inside. As I listened to the commentators I heard that a third plane had hit the Pentagon, just a few miles from our house. Rumors were running wild, no one knew how many planes were still in the air and if any of them were potential threats. There was talk of one plane above Pennsylvania that appeared to be headed for DC. That's when I started trying to get your father on the phone. His office was at 15th & I streets in NW DC, just a couple of blocks from the White House. I just knew in my heart that that plane over Pennsylvania was headed for one of our DC landmarks -- either the Capitol, or the Mall, or, as I most feared, the White House. I tried for several minutes before I could get a line through to downtown DC. Daddy had been watching the news on his little TV set in his office. The phone lines had been jammed, so he had not been able to call us. He was not yet certain how he could get home, since the Metro was temporarily shut down. I was nervous about him being downtown, and I was equally nervous about him riding the vulnerable Metro, but I really, really wanted him home with us. Just then, we received word that the fourth plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. The TV was full of rumors about other planes in the air, about terrorists on the loose, about bombs here and bombs there... I just wanted our family to be all together in one place. Your Daddy made it home sometime before noon. All of downtown DC was evacuating, so it took some time for him to get home on the Metro. By then, of course, the damage had all been done -- the two towers had collapsed, the Pentagon was burning, and Flight 93 had disintegrated into a Pennsylvania meadow. All planes had been cleared from US airspace and the sky was clear, empty, and quiet. With your Daddy home and you down for a nap, I headed to the local blood bank at Inova Fairfax Hospital. I (like you) am type O-, the "universal donor", and at that time we had hopes that there would be many survivors who would be arriving at NY and DC hospitals for treatment and in need of blood. When I got there, there was already a line well out the door and a 6-hour wait. Spontaneous volunteers had organized themselves into little helper brigades, passing out water and snacks to those waiting in line and handling paperwork. I could see that they already had more people in line than they could possibly process by the end of the day, so after an hour or so I took the paperwork and left for home, intending to return the next day. Of course by then we knew that there would be no influx of wounded survivors, no need for extra units of blood... no one to help. That afternoon was spent in our living room, watching the uninterrupted coverage on the news channels. Those channels not carrying news coverage simply ceased their usual broadcasts and instead displayed messages of sympathy. It all seemed so surreal, so impossible on a clear September day. We watched endless replays of the towers falling, falling -- eventually, near the end of the day, the news channels all seemed to agree that enough was enough, and they stopped showing footage of the burning, collapsing towers. After that first horrible day, the images of the falling towers had been burned in everyone's memory and it was pointless to show them on the television any longer; we almost never saw them after that. We went for a walk around the neighborhood early that evening, while the sun was still up. We pushed you around in your stroller and talked about the events of the day, and what it all meant for the world, for our country, for our little family. I distinctly remember that an airplane suddenly appeared low in the sky -- a large, loud, unmarked official aircraft of some kind. It seemed so wrong that a plane should be flying that low over DC, not on that day. We lived on the flight path for both National and Dulles so planes were an everyday, even everyhour, occurrence above our neighborhood. But on that day, that plane was just so entirely out of place that I kept my eyes on it until it disappeared from sight. Neither your father nor I had any feelings of rage or had any thoughts of retaliation that day or in the days to come, we were just filled with shock and sorrow. I didn't feel any kind of new vulnerability, or lose some kind of false sense of security, or any of those things that people talked about following the attacks. All I felt was pure grief. For days thereafter I would wander into the living room and hold you tightly as I watched the latest news, and the tears would begin all over again. All those people, gone. Gone, just like that, on a clear September morning. One of my employees, Mary Ann Prokop, lost her brother Terry Lynch at the Pentagon. On the 12th she sent the following message to all of her co-workers: I keep hearing about retaliation, etc. against the people who did this, and I am so saddened by this. Our world needs to soften. We had no idea what was going on as no one here had a radio. I went to a website with a live video feed as the second plane hit the tower. After a few hours there; however, it was obvious this day was unlike any other before. I was in a chemistry lab doing an experiment when my teacher told all of us that we had the rest of the class off, that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. Each one of us immediately ran to the computer lab and got the lastest images available throughout the day. Rumors were numerous and some were very far fetched. Later that day I was picked up at school and went home to be safe, and think about what I had just witnessed. During this day I woried about many close to me. How do I begin....I was taking my husband to work, and on the way we were lisiting to the radio and they broke in with the news the first plane had hit The World Trade Center I ! I was getting off the fwy. and stopped at the light and looked at my husband and said " What did they say ? ...The Trade Center...plane ! ? I went down the road trying to consentrate on the traffic and listening to what they were saying. I dropped my husband off, drove about 500 feet, had to stop driving and listen. After returning from dinner about 10pm, Sept 11 , I was horrified when watching Fox news showing one of the towers collapsing. To my experience, its a first on TV for me. I also managed to witness several times the plane crashing into the building and quickly called my wife who was in Beijing asking is she is ok. I was sad to see, people trapped and some trying to jump off the building to save their life. Not knowing, it was actually a live telecast from CNN as well. Quite shocking and also it was cruel of the terrorist to do such things to humans. I was also sad to note that one of my American colleagues working on a project in that building, somehow got trapped and died. During school on Sept. 11,2001 I was in third period when my teacher got a note for the office saying one of the twin towers had be hit. Us students didn't think anything of it because we thought we didn't even know want the twin towers were and it was happening in New York so why should we be concerned about it. Later that morning the teachers got another email/note from the office this time it was the second twin tower. Now i was acting serious I was wondering what was happening to us , why was it happening to us. I just didn't understand. I was walking to my locker to get my books for the class and I heard a guy yell, "A plane smashed into the twin towers!" On September 11, 2001, I was in my office at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, working on student folders and listening to the BBC over the Internet. Suddenly, I snapped to attention--something about the announcer's voice had caught my attention. I realized he was saying that something had happened in New York--a plane had hit the World Trade Center and it was on fire. I ran out of the office to find all of my colleagues gathered, talking, and speculating that this was an attack, which I refused to believe. Then the second plane hit, and I was partially convinced. About an hour later, I went into another office to return a folder and one of the women was sitting at her desk with the oddest expression on her face--it was a combination of horror, disbelief, amazement and fear. She told me t hat another plane had hit the ground in PA, and that it had been heading for Washington. Then, I belived that we were under attack and I realized that I was seeing her expression mirrored on everyone's face. We didn't know what to do, then. We all tried to call our families but most of the phone lines were overloaded and unavailable, so we just sat, stunned and in disbelief. Finally, we heard that the university was putting CNN on the big screen in the auditorium and we went over in small groups just to see what was happenening in New York and Washington. I'll never forget the silence of our usually busy and noisy campus. Nobody talked, nobody laughed and some people were quietly crying. Occasionally, you would hear someone exclaim, Oh My God, my (mother, father, brother, sister, etc) works in that building, but for the most part, thousands of us sat in total silence just viewing the devastation. It was an eerie, unforgetable experience. Finally, we just filed out in order to make room for the hundreds who were waiting, silently, to take our seats. Yes, I traveled to Australia and New Zealand this summer and I was surprized to find how hesitant I was to take that 14 hour flight and to be so far from home and family. I was also surprized at my reaction to the question has anyone asked you to carry anything.... I told the agent NO and nobody had better ask me to do that, either, if they know what's good for them--I was truly furious at the very thought that someone might try to use me to do their dirty work. I enjoyed my trip but I was very grateful to see Los Angeles on our return--and usually, I am sad to come back from anywhere. We were a country truly united in September, 2001, and showed during that time what it means to be an American. I was in 8th grade and I was getting ready for my second day of school when my dad came into the house and told my family to come to the family room. He had been out jogging with his walkman on and he heard about the first plane crash. He ran straight home to tell us about it and we turned on the T.V. When the screen came on I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing. It all didn't seem real as they showed footage of airplanes crashing into the Twin Towers. I remember sitting on the couch wondering how this could have possibly happened.Then it came time for me to go to school. During the ride to school my mom had the radio on and they wee talking about it. When I arrived at school and I walked into the classroom the T.V. was on and the entire class watched for the first hour of school and afterwards we discussed what was going on. I didn't want to be at school at the point because it was extremely horrifying to think about what was going on at that moment in the entire country as people found out that they had lost their loved ones. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, I started to think about how horrible this was everyday and it changed my perspective on life. I need to make every moment count beause tomorrow I might not be here. I also saw many changes around me. Everybody had their flags flying from their houses and their cars. The country came together during this horrible time of suffering. Ever since September 11 whenever I hear the National Anthem or God Bless America I think about the terrorist attacks and I feel like I did the day it happened, I feel very sad when I think about it. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that everybody should remember how the country came together. Everyone needs to remember everything that happened on September 11, to stay close to one another. People need to remember to be proud to be an American where they live in a free country. We must remember to stick together no matter what happens. We must never forget. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes,I did fly an American flag after September 11. Yes, my feelings have changed about the American Flag. Before September 11 I didn't look at the flag the same way I do now. Whenever I see the flag I remember what happened on that horrible day when we were attacked by the terrorists. My name is Aaron Aamold and I was not in New York on September 11th, I didnt have any family that was affected directly by the attacks. Like everyone else in America though, I do remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. On the morning of September 11th I was in an anti terrorism class with the rest of division 355 in navy boot camp. We were two days away from graduation and very excited that we were going to be moving on to our training commands and leaving Great Lakes IL. As we were siting in class our instructor put us on a short break so we could get a drink and stretch our legs. As our instructor returned and told us that that a plane has struck the world trade center, my first thought was the same as the rest of my division. We thought that it was some kind of sick trick in order to get us in the mindset of how serous terrorism is. After he told us he put us on another break, he soon came back with an update that both towers were hit and the first one had fallen. In a state of denial I still thought it was a sick joke and it wasnt until out RDC had rushed in and told us that we had to put on our gear and get outside that it finally set in. It as soon as we got back to our berthing we were allowed one phone call to let our family know that they were not allowed to go to our graduation in 2 days. Many people had family that traveled from all over the country to see their new sailors graduate. In my case my father rode his motorcycle from Santa Paula CA. only to be turned around at the gate. It wasnt until a day later that we were able to see the news on the attacks. I was amazed by the amount of people showing pride in America the first time I was allowed to leave base. I was proud to be a part of the navy, and I am proud of the people who gave their lives to help those who were in the world trade center, and the pentagon. The efforts of those onboard flight 93 show me that courageous people still exist. There sacrifice may have saved thousands of lives. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? i got a tattoo of an american flag on my leg a few months later. my fealings did not change i have always looked at the american flag with the thought that it stands as a symbol of strength.
