I think that the thing that should be rembered the most about 9/11 would have to be the heroism of the men and women of the Police and Fire departments. These men and women all showed why they are the true heros of this day, and how they gave the name "hero" a great meaning once again. The way they layed their lives on the line to try to save the thousands of people in the towers and pentagon was a true heroic act that only certain people could bring themselves to do! the 354 firefighters from the FDNY and he many police officers from the NYPD that lost their lives show how much they care for their job, and also how much they put into saving others before themselves. I think they all showed a great strength and courage to try to save lives and should be rembered greatly as some of the true heros that this country has ever had!! After the events that occured on 9/11 my family and I flew a flag otuside our house for several weeks. The flag the we were flying I think took a new meaning to many people around the country, and I was one of them. The flag before 9/11 was not really of that much importance to me. i mean i knew what it was about, and what it symbolized. After 9/11 however, the flag meant something more, and symbolized more than it ever had before to me. It became something that when i looked at it, or pledged to it made me feel a sense of thankfulness for where I am and how I am living a free life in the United States Of America. September 11, 2001 truely did change my feelings and outlooks on the flag, but most of all the symbols that it represents about our wonderful country!! My dad came rushing in and told me to turn of cnn. When i turned it on i thought it was a movie at first. Not every day do you see a huge aircraft smash into some of the most important buildings in the United States. My whole family was in our living room watching: we were all so quit and still. Then all at once questions and emotions came out. My question at first was who did this and was it an accident. Then i saw a face that i have never seen before. That face would be stuck in my mind for a long time after that. The face belonged to Osama Bin Ladan. Still we had to go to school that day. We asked our teachers if we could watch the television instead of doing school work. All of the staff was American and Indonesian, so they let us watch the news without any problems. When school was over I went home i started to think about my family in the states. Felt that i should have been there with my counrty in times like that. Days later we went to church. During the mass we sang songs that were really patriotic. I was the alter during this church setion and i could see everyone from where i was. Everyone was crying. I was in bed when my phone rang,It was a friend of the family asking if we heard anything from my mother in-law.(My mother in-law worked on the 97th floor of tower 2)It was a strange feeling I got from this called that prompted the obvious question "Why?".Immediately I turned the TV on and saw one of the towers burning.Panic set in,by coincidence she had stayed over and was off to work from my home.Just a few minutes later releif when she rang our bell and told us the light rail was stopped and she never made it to work(My mother in-law was in her office in 1993 and walked all the way down).Now we rushed back to the TV still confused when the second plane hit,reality struck terrorism again.I am a Jersey City Police Officer and was on my day off September 11,so I am wondering when the call from my department would come,it didn't, on the bottom of the television screen a scrolling message "All police,fire and emergency medical personnel report to you departments".20 minutes later I was in full uniform and on my way to my precinct,we were teansported to a staging area near exchange place which is directly across the river from the World Trade Center,My first view just brought hurt,anger and most of all disbeleif.I felt violated "How dare someone do this to us" but I knew I had a job to do and within the hour myself and all my brothers and sisters on this job I chose and love were on many boats crossing the river.What I saw and experienced I feel no need to get into by now"We all know " whether you are a police officer or not.I always thought about people that were part of history,this is one part of history I hope would hyave never happened.But I was forced into it by evil cowards and I am proud I was able to serve along side the great people of this country. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at a class at a Ramada Inn and we had just stopped for our first break. As I and some of my coworkers walked out of the meeting room, another coworker was walking back toward us saying that NYC had just exploded. We didn't understand what he meant, until we arrived at the lounge area where a TV was on with the news. We still could not tell what had happened. All that was on the screen was a huge cloud of smoke covering downtown NY. Then the news anchor finally announced that a plane had hit the WTC. We all stood there dumbfounded, speechless. We reluctantly went back to the class to begin the next session, but out concentration was lower now, and most were focused on the next break to see the update on NY. Every so often, a Ramada Inn employee would come get someone to leave, and then the call for all military personnel to report to their base came. Out next break was lunch. We went to the Loop, and as we ate, we watched as the second plane hit. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT! I told my friend that it looked like something out of a movie. They just showed it over and over. We went back to the class, looking forward to each break to hear the news. Finally the class was over and I went home. All we watched that night was the news about the attacks. By this time, they had footage of the first plane hitting the WTC. As the news continuously showed the same reels over and overthe planes crashing, the buildings falling, the people running, crying, hurting... it all became too much and I could not help but cry. My wife and I turned offthe TV and just talked. I don't remember about what. I later wrote an entry about that day in the journal I am keeping for my 16 mo. old son. I pray every day, sometimes three or more times. It is the only way I have found to stay sane. I put all my trust in God that he will take care of all of my problems, worries, hardships and pains. I make an effort to call my parents more, spend more time with family and just live life to its fullest. Sounds cliche, but it's true. Of course we need to remember all those who lost their lives, those who helped, those who donated their time and money, and those whose families will forever have a whole in thier lives for the ones that were lost. We should also remember that life goes on. Many people will dwell on this event for years to come and that is not good. This is why I refuse to watch any coverage on the attacks today (Sept. 11, 2002). I listened to some of it on the radio on the way to work, and it just brought back all of the bad memories. This is why I hope that the rumors I am hearing about making this day a holiday are not true, and that it never happens. Not because I didn't want to. One reason was I could not get one (they were very hard to get after Sept. 11) But as I thought about it, I was glad I did not, mostly because it seemed the a lot of people did it just as a result of the event, maybe for pride, but you have to think, where was all this pride for country before the attacks. If you look around now, no one has the flag on their car anymore, no one wears a red, white & blue T-shirt anymore. My feelings about the American flag have not changed. I still think it is the most beautiful flag in the world. And not just for what it stands for. It truly is a beautiful flag just to look at. There is a company here in town that flies a huge one, and as I pass by it, I just look in awe at this amazing symbol of our freedoms and am soooo thankful I am an American! As I listened the news that a major airliner crashed into the world trade center unfolded. Since I car pool I had to stop and pick up a friend. I ran into their house and said turn on the TV. That is when the second plane hit. We watched TV for a bit, stunned and then drove into work. I listened and watched the media coverage of these terrible attacks all day. I was angry, saddened, and feeling helpless. Soon I realized that my reactions affected others around me and I started talking in more positive ways. I talked about how the President would take appropriate action, and that America as a whole would pull through this. And of course we have. I was at work when a co-worker walked up and asked me if I had heard a plane hit the World Trade Center, and if I could find out if it was true. I immediately checked the AOL page and got a blurb that confirmed what he had said. The quote on the page, which I have never seen or heard anywhere else since then said that papers from the building were falling on Brooklyn. Our office in Washington, DC is in a window-less building several miles from the Capitol and even farther from the Pentagon which is located in suburban Virginia, but when we heard the Pentagon had been hit we rushed to a basement teaching room that had a large screen TV and started watching the coverage. I remember someone I didn't know breaking into tears as we watched the buildings fall and feeling so helpless. Rumors were awful. There was a local Washington TV report that a car bomb had gone off near the State Department, and that downtown was in flames. My wife, who was in her office much closer to the Pentagon but still in DC could see the smoke from the fire, and hear the jets scrambling overhead. She couldn't get away from her office because all of the offices around were emptying at once and the streets were a madhouse. She finally used the subway to come over to my side of town where I picked her up for our trip back to our home in Virginia. Our normal route to and from work takes us past the Pentagon so we were worried about what it might be like. It turned out to be even more surreal than the rest of the day's events. By the time I hooked up with my wife it was almost noon, and we headed out prepared for a long ride home. Surprisingly, by that time, the town was empty except for National Guardsmen, police and firemen. We passed the Pentagon and through the smoke cloud which was acrid and sickly sweet at the same time. We were basically the only car on the road until we got home. Our twin daughters had started college as freshmen in different parts of southern Virginia only two weeks before. This was their first time on their own and boy did we miss them and their optimism. We ran up such a phone bill over the next two weeks talking to them that it took me three months to catch up with it. One daughter was going to school in Norfolk, VA near the Naval Base there and she had to contend with constant alerts and warnings about closing the harbor or the base. It was even proposed that the school might have to close to allow the Navy to use the dorms while the students would have to go home. The other daughter was at a school in the Shenandoah Valley miles from any town of any size or anything that might be considered a "target" but the paranoia still had many of her classmates heading home for safety. I know my wife and I have gone through some difficult adjustments and some of our problems were certainly affected and increased in severity by the events of that day. My daughters, who left as kind of scared teenagers on the brink of something new, have very quickly blossomed into capable young women who have withstood their baptism of fire. I suspect all first year college students grow up a lot, but I think the freshmen of 2001-2002 have an extra edge of having weathered the worst they will ever have to deal with. At least I hope they never have to face worse events. Please God, are you listening? Damn, in tears again. On the day of these events, when my office dismissed and we went our separate ways to be with our families and to face what we only could guess would be forthcoming, I bid them farewell with "Viya con Dios". I witnessed it the morning it happened on the news and i thought it was something off of some movie because it looked too real to be true! I kept the TV on for the whole day just to check out that incident. It was very sad and terrible to witness the tradgety firsthand off the news live and know that very many people died from Osama and the Taliban. We shall fight to the death until justice is made over this 9/11 incident! THEY WILL PAY!! THis incident has brought America a lot closer to each other than they ever have been. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was sitting in History class, second Period. It had started just a few moments ago. My teacher Mr. Ripley usually would go out in the hallway to get the absentee sheet of paper. So he went out of the room for a few minutes and the class didn't think anythingof it. It was just a normal day for us. so far. Mr. Ripley rushed into the classroom wondering what was goin on. We don't just watch TV in his class. And then we saw. He said a plane had just hit the World Trade Centers. The explosion - it was smoking everywhere the building was flaming. A kid in my class snickered thinking it wasn't real or something. But it was real. We all watched in disbelief. Who would do such a thing? We watched it the whole period. When the bell rang, going through the hallways was a little quieter. But some people still didn't know what happened. As soon as I got into Biology class we put on the TV. Our teacher let us watch it all period too. In that time we saw the second plane hit, one tower collapse and the Pentagon get hit. We were so shocked and in disbeliefwe didn't know what else would come. We were worried scared. Lots of kids were calling their parents, family members, and friends. Alot of kids were taken out of school. We went on to fourth period which was gym class. My teacher got our class a classroom that wasn't being used and we sat there watching the other building collapse. After that, they made an announcement and wouldn't let us watch TV because some family and faculty might've been killed and it would hurt too much to watch. The whole day I was thinking about my sister Gina, who worked in Manhatten and my uncle who worked and lived there. When I went to Band, 8th period, I saw my brother and asked him if he thought Gina was ok. He said, "Don't worry, Don't you remember she has off today? It's Tuesday, her day off." The relief those words brought to me were amazing. I was still worried because I wanted to talk to her, and hear her and make sure she was ok. The whole day was a mix of emotions. you were angry,yet sad and vulnerable at the same time. It was a hard day for everyone. When I got home form school, I turned on the TV with my brother, whose 3 years older than me. We sat and watched Mayor Guliani and various people talking at a press conference. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11 started with me completely unaware of the events in New York city. I'm a teacher and that morning I drove to school as normal, listening to Howard Stern on the radio. Of course, in the Midwest, Howard is on an hour delay, so there was no mention of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center by the time I got to school. As soon as I got into the building, a co-worker asked me if I had heard about the plane hitting the World Trade Center. She told me that they aren't sure if it was deliberate or not. About fifteen minutes later, the second plane hit the other tower. Our principal told all the teachers not to turn on the televisions or radios in classrooms, because he didn't want to frighten the students. (I teach in a middle school.) I will forever question that decision, because I feel that the students should have had the option of witnessing this historical event firsthand. Regardless, we kept the internet on our office computer so we could keep up with the day's disastrous events. The horror kept building as the third and fourth planes crashed and it sunk in that these were carefully orchestrated and deliberate attacks against all of us. After school several of us went to the nearest bar to watch the news stations, and that was the first time we actually saw the World Trade Center towers collapse. The silence in the bar from our table was downright uncomfortable. Nobody wanted to intrude on anyone else's thoughts at that time. All I kept thinking was, "Oh my God . . . all of those people still in those buildings!" Several of us had tears in our eyes. It was a stunningly devastating moment for all of us. These are memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life hasn't changed too much. There is much tighter security in our school building now. I don't fly often, so I haven't yet been exposed to the hightened security at the airports. I'm just afraid that in the aftermath of September 11, a lot of the basic civil rights that I enjoy are becoming eroded in the name of "National Security." That scares me almost as much as another terrorist attack. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The bravery of the people who ran to, not from, the World Trade Towers to try and help as many people as possible. That selfless act cost many of them their own lives. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, I put up a flag at home, and put a flag decal on both cars. I've never been a "rah-rah, red, white, and blue," type of person before September 11th. Before, I did the obligatory show of putting the flag up for national holidays like July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc. I still put the flag up for those special holidays, but there is more significance in my mind as to what that flag means not only to myseld, but how it is viewed by others around the world. There is a much more fierce pride in the concept of "being an American" than there was prior to September 11th. So, I guess in that aspect, I've changed. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I live in Manila, Philippines. It was past 12 midnight when i took a cab home. On the AM radio, it was the Phillipine Ambassador for the US who spoke and said that they are still to find out if there were Filipinos in the WTC. Then the radio jock said a few words about what was happening before his program gave way to a commercial. Then it hit me...there were plane attacks in New York were a few of my good friends work. My heart was like hearing drum rolls that it was beating like i was running in a marathon... when i got home, i thanked the driver and told him that we should pray that people are safe and ok, then i went straight to my room and tried calling my friend from my mobile phone, but my call was always dropped...i was praying, actually not praying but talking to Jesus as if he were by my side actually having a conversation with me...an hour or two passed already and i couldn't get through... somehow Jesus made me feel ok when i fell asleep that early wednesday morning in Manila. When i got to the McCann office i work before, everybody was in the conference room watching the news and video on CNN. That whole day, no one talked of anything else but the WTC bombings...and it was only then that i trembled because of the sight i am seeing...it gave me a nervous feeling that i have to watch out for almost anything, anywhere and anytime...i was bothered. However, everytime, restlessness would engulf me, i would pray to Jesus to make me feel calm because the tension is actually killing me. The TV in McCann Philippines, at least in our department was kept on the whole day and the couple of days that followed, even during lunch time where everyone would usually want to view the local noontime variety program where we would laugh at the entertainers. We were like kids that stares at the TV attentively, like when you are watching cartoons or a great scene from an adventure movie, only now, what we are seeing are real acts of terrorism that is making everyone shake with fear and anxiety. The day after the incident, on our yahoo egroup, a friend emailed us that our friend in New York is actually doing fine. That night, i was able to talk to her, and we talked for over an hour. She narrated her experience and how terrifying it was. Along our conversation, tears were unconsciously flowing from my eyes as i can visualize the faces and reactions of the people she was narrating about. It will be a year a few weeks from now, but the images are still fresh and the event still terrifies me. I just hope, wish, and pray that it doesn't happen again, ever. The begianing of the day started out fine I got up and got reasy for school. This morning the one thing that was diggerent was I rode the bus to school. When we were on the bus the driver had th e radio to the station were they were talking about what had happened to the twin towers and how it was a terrist atack. Whan I got to school we watched the news all day long and shared feelings about what had happened. When I got home my mom and grandma were home and watching what had happened on the T.V. What must have the people felt as they saw the building looming closer, bringing them to their inevitable death? I couldn't imagine the fear and anxiety the people on the plane must have felt. Mothers trying to assure their sobbing children that everything was OK...I shuddered at the thought. Then, the unimaginable happened. The Twin Towers collapsed, one after the other. I sat dumbstruck as each of the burning buildings caved in, floor after floor, to the ground. People were screaming, crying, and yelling for help, it was absolute chaos. I never thought an event so drastic, so close to home, so life-changing could happen in my time. It had always been that these events happened only inside the boring history books, and I could safely assume none of them would come alive today. I was wrong. The same hatred and emotion that existed and started wars was still there after all this time. After I shook off some of the shock, I cried. I cried for the mothers, the fathers, the children, the firefighters, the police officers, and all the others who perished on this fateful day of September 11th 2001. Actually, iam not an american citizen i live in london england but iam sure that doesnt matter, as we are all a family of the human race. Oh, where/how does one begin..... i remember being at home watching the televeision and distinctively remember my mother being in the bathrooom doing her makeup when the news came on. I remember screaming and my mother rushing to the living room to see if i was ok. i was in complete disbelief-shock, i could not beleive what i was seeing. she immediatley sat down and we where both glued to the screen. i recollect asking my self if i new or had any friends who may possibly have been there, you see i was taking gap year out of university and wanted to go to america for a years placement, i knew some people who went abroad but nobody came to mind. thank god no body i knew was there. i remember immediatly calling my best friend who also lives in london. we stayed on the fone for what seemed for hours, watching the news at the same time as we talked about what had just happened.we where both in shock. i dont think ive cried so much in my life before. you see what happened didnt just happen to the american people but to all mankind. it was such a strange feeling - i felt like i had known all those people that had lost there lives. i needed to do some thing, so i mad a picture of an eagle with the american flag and wrote a note on it and took it to the american embassy in london. it was quite surreal, there were hundreds of people there, from children to grandparents from mothers to fathers, school children.... its a memory i well treasure most as i remember there was real sence of community and closeness amongst every boby there.there was a sea of flowers and notes from every one. i think ill stop here as the tears wont let me continue typing.... i just want to say one last thing from the bottom of my heart: may God protect not only those of america, but the entire race of mankind. and may those who seek to evil be punished! During my morning math class the news came in the form of a rumor until this horrid rumor was made fact by our staff over the speaker. My first reaction was shock and disbelief, like maybe it was an accident or if it had only occured in my mind and wasn't real. I believed this until I witnessed with my own eyes the horrible events of that day on T.V. with hundreds of my classmates and friends. Then i felt sorrow for the thousands of innocent lives, then fear for my Father who works near the Pentagon. Gladly I say he was okay along with the rest of my family and friends, and though I did not know anyone personally who was involved in the attacks I still share in their pain and pray for their health and reformation. Personally my life has been affected by the amounts of security and the measures taken by the government both nationally and internationally. On 9/11 i was in the 7th grade and was on my way to science class fixing to do work,and on the tv screen it said 2 planes hit the World Trade Center.I was devistated because one of my freind's mom was supose to go to New York on business but when it came lunch time she got a note saying her trip got cancled. Yes, and now I look at life a lot different because I thought we were safe in the U.S.But I found out that no one is safe from any thing,and now I on take one step at a time and I don't plan to far ahead cause you never know what could happen you can be alive one minite and be dead the next. You should always remember all the people that lost there lives that day, and all the police, firefighters,and the volunteers that tried to help but lost there lives. The first time I heard about September 11 was when I first walked in my class and all I saw on T.V. was a big cloud of smoke the first words that came out of my mouth were "What is going on!" And then I heard that two airplanes hit the Twin Towers, I was shocked! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, my life and many other lifes have changed. I changed by being more incouraging to others andto express myself, and to love everyone around me. My feelings have changed aboout the American Flag in so many ways like wanting to learn more aboutthe flag, the Constitution and the Declaration of Indepedence. And everyone around us mean something to the world. And also every cance I get at singing I will always sing the Star-Spangled Banner.
