I woke up to the words, "one of the world trade centers have been hit". Thinking that this was a plane crash and something must have malfunctioned in the plane, I didnt think that any terrorism was involved. Then moments later, i see on the TV that the second trade center had been hit. Now I knew that terrorism was in some way related. Before leaving for school I saw both of the world trade centers collapse. Then to go to school knowing that all this mayhem is going on while I'm sitting in a classroom. I didn't know what to expect, whether this was the end or if we would all be evacuated. The worst feeling is knowing that something bad is about to happen and not knowing what it will be. We were out of our regular classroom and using a computer lab. Another teacher in a class nearby came in and said "check out USA Today.com... something has happened." I went to the website and saw photos of the World Trade Center on fire. I immediately stopped class and said students "There has been some kind of accident in New York, I think it may be significant. We should all stop what we are doing and go back to the classroom to turn on the TV." Most students beat me back to the room and had the TV on. We sat in stunned, scared silence as the reports came in with their horrific pictures. The remainder of the day as students came in and out classes we watched the news, talked about our feelings, shared worries, and discussed those we knew in New York or Washington D.C. My wife and I and our 9 month old daughter were in New York visiting the city for our first time on the morning of September 11th. We had spent the evening of the 10th walking around Rockafeller square, Radio City Music Hall, St. Patrick's Cathedral and other related areas. I remember it begain raining that night and we ran from door way to door way making our way back to our hotel. It was our intent to go to the World Trade Center, and then on to the Statue of Liberty the next morning. All of the tour guides indicated that you should get to to battery park to catch the ferry across to Ellis Island before 9:00 and that was our intent. As we entered the hotel lobby, my wife suggested I stop by the concerge and get the specifics of what trains to take to get to the WTC. The concerge told us "Sleep in, its a school day, no need to rush". So we took his advice, and at 8:30, we woke up to see the first tower on fire from our hotel room just below Broadway. I remember walking down on the streets later in the day on the 11th, and being amazed at how eerily quiet and deserted all of New York was. Atfter having been there for 4 days prior and hearing all the brake squealing and seeing all the people going about thier lives, it was surreal to see everything so empty and quiet... Almost peaceful after what had happened just hours before. I was so impressed by how New Yorkers pulled together and in spike of such tremendous adversity and trauma, they all managed to pull together and act as a family. People always say that New York is a cold, unfriendly place, but I thought quite the opposite. It was so amazing to see the lines outside the hospitals on Manhatten where people were just trying to donate blood. We thought it was a good idea too, but just couldn't stand in line that long with our baby. I still get choked up to this day thinking what would have happened if my wife hadn't prompted me to the concerge desk, and had we not heeded his sage advice. It is truly the melting pot of the world and on that day of utter darkness, it stood as a shining beakon to the world that nothing can be done to ever break the spirit of those who are free. As a twelve-year old, now thirteen, boy in a small town in ohio i remeber getting up slowly because i dont like to get up that early but it was a school day so i had to, but any way i got to school went to my locker like normal put my stuff in my locker and was board out of my mind until one of my friends came by and we started to talk until my first class opened up, which was seventh grade math so i went put my stuff in on my desk got the asent sheet out and went to talk some more untill the bell rang to go into class. Class was the same, we only had one person missing that day so it was a usual day. Well we got through first class normally enough, I mean math is math. Well when we got to second period, which was Ohio History, things went normally untill about the last ten minutes of class, the principal came to our class and told Mr. Metz, my teacher, that the World Trade Ceter Towers had been accendetaly hit by a plane. Well we couldn't watch because the tv wasn't working so we went on to thired period, well we could watch it there. While we were watching the coverage all of a sudden we saw a plane flying by swoop down purpesly hit the other tower, needless to say i was never so scared. Well later that day i heard about the pentagon being hit and the plane that was crashed in shanksvile pa, i was never so proud of americans then. Well then i was watching at home with my famitly and saw both towers collapes. It was the saddest thing i've ever seen. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On the morning of Spetember 11th, 2001, I was at Vista View Middle School. At the time, I was 13 years of age. As I walked into my literature teacher's classroom, I noticed many were crowded around the portable TV. I wasn't one for large groups of people and chose not to join them. So I sat down at my desk, and began talking with a close friend of mine. There was much screaming from the television, but I figured Mrs. Hollister was just watching an action movie or some sort. It did not occur to me that hundreds were dying by the second as I sat, chatting with my friends. The minute bell rang and students began pouring into the room and into their seats. It was never silent when the bell rang. I overheard some kids talking about a plane crashing into a building. I thought they were just talking about some new movie that was out and didn't pay any attention. It wasn't until a few minutes had passed that I noticed Mrs. Hollister wasn't her usual cheery self. She was just sitting at her desk, staring blankly at the television. Her cheeks were stained with tears. As I looked around the room, I saw many with their heads on their tables. A plane had crashed into the World Trade Center? The thought seemed impossible to me. How could that happen? All my life, I had thuoght all planes and air traffic were controlled by men and women in some fancy building with moniters and computers and all the technology in the world. My life has not changed much since then, and I don't know anyone who has lost a family member or friend in those various tragities. But every year since that day, on September 11th, I am reminded how easily everything can be lost. Family, friends, a distant aunt or uncle, should all be cherished, and never neglected. Getting up, going to work, taking care of the things I do on a regular work day. While I was in a triennial audit of the grant work that I do, an intern came in and said, "An airplane just flew into the World Trade Center!" I had worked at Evansville Regional Airport in the past and said, "Oh no! The pilot must have had a heart attack, otherwise how could that have happened?" Of course, it wasn't too long until the second plane hit the other tower and we all looked at each other and said, "We are under attack! This is war." Throughout that sad and frightening day, the horrible details just kept coming as we sat mesmerized by the television. The thing I remember so distinctly, though, was that our phone began to ring and each person was calling the special people in their lives to say, "Are you okay? Have you heard the terrible news?" My children are both away at college and I heard from them first: "Mom, have you heard?" It accentuated the feeling of separation that I have from them being so far away. The day after the attacks, I couldn't imagine that I would awaken to a world without some new horror in it. I didn't sleep well for weeks; I couldn't eat much; I cried easily. I was obsessed with everything I could see, read, and experience about the attacks. It was shock and disbelief. I thought that if I could understand it somehow that I could get the feeling of peacefulness that I had in the past. It did not work. Time finally healed the feelings of helplessness and terror, but the event reminded me of the prayer, "Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are...." because our days in the United States will never be the same. I do not let time go by without telling people how much I care about them. I am acutely aware of how precious our freedom is here in America. The way that America rallied around itself and didn't let this day ruin the good things about this country. The bravery of those who were on the plane that tried to stop the terrorists. The haunting sight of people looking desparately for their loved ones. The strong leadership of President Bush in the wake of such a horrifying event. The strength of the Mayor of New York. The little things that went on among people....helping each other, giving blood, praying, digging through the ruined buildings. Our strenth and our love for each other and the United States of America and how that was not defeated by any event that occurred on that fateful day. The first time that I had heard any thing about the trade center was when I first woke up in the morning my mom told me that an airplane had crashed into the south tower and it was on all the news channels. When I first went out to the living room to watch, my sister was already out in the living room watching the trade towers burning. After about a few minutes of watching I saw another airplane coming towards the north tower and slamed into the tower in a huge explosion. That day was a regularly school day except that every classroom had a TV with the news on what had happened to the trade towers and what they were doing to save any one that was caught in the colapse of the trade towers. Only in the afternoon did I hear that a former cross country runners dad was on the first plane that hit the south trade tower. It was very upseting that something like that hit so close to home. That day I just realized how luckey I was and how very unlucky many people were that had died in the colapse. That day I think really touched a lot of people in different ways, some more painful than others. Even though I didn't have any close relatives that died that day it still hit me very hard that people could actully think that it was ok to kill as many people that they did. I hopped out of the shower that morning only to hear chaos and dismay being projected from my TV, being a high school teacher, I listened as I got prepared for school. No one knew that it was intentional at that point I was floored at this unfortunate accident, but proceeded to go to work. By the time I got into my car the 2nd plane struck, at this point the writing was on the wall...terrorism had struck...this was no accident. As a US History teacher I knew this was this was unique in that we were actually attacked on our home soil, a thought many believed would never happen...The 15 minutes it took me to get to school that morning seemed to take a lifetime, as I arrived in school I mentally prepared myself to be strong and assure the students we were safe...but were we, I couldn't say. I was outraged but at the same time scared... for myself , my students and moreso America. Could this be the Apocolypse, a beginning of the end???? I sat the entire day staring at the TV in utter amazement, trying to find something to say to make it alright, to comfort my students, I found nothing to fill this void. In my classroom that day I instructed every pupil to do nothing more than sit down and realize from this point on things in America would never be the same. Still to this day I think back to this tragic day and I am speechless at times, angry at others. It is with these emotions my students and I have constructed a memorial on our campus to help ourselves and also to never forget the travesty that occurred on September 11th. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had gotten up very early that morning and a friend and I went to the beach at Fernandina Beach, Florida. We spent a couple hours there just walking the beach and relaxing. When we returned home, the atmosphere was strange and people seemed so stressed. I asked one of my neighbors what was wrong and all she could say was people were dying. I turned on the TV, just as the second plane hit the tower and then watched in shock for the remainder of the day. I thought, how could this be? We are America, but in just a few minutes I realized that our world had changed and that we were indeed under attack. My heart and soul were so deeply saddened, to this day I still feel that same saddness when I hear or see anything about 9-11. I called my daughter and Mother and told them I loved them. I cried while my husband held me. I still can hardly believe that anyone could have the copacity to murder innocent men, women and children. I think we should remember all who gave their lives to help, but also we need to let the terrorist know that we are still America, the land of the Free. We need to also remember the pain and trauma of that day and do all we can to try to prevent it from ever happening again. The children, our future who will never feel the warmth of the sun or the beauty of a sunset. They are the ones that I will mostly remember. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I'm from Bala Cynwyd Pa and I was in Milwaukee Wisconsin traveling for my job. Our boss called all his employee's and told all of us to leave work and go back to our apartments for the rest of the day.I had no idea what was happening but I remember on the way out of our building which happens to connect by a skywalk to Milwaukee's tallest building that there was a mass exodus of people leaving the building . Apparently a vendor left his vechicle unattended under the skywalk and nobody could locate this person and I guess with everything going on in New York authorities thought maybe the truck would blow up. The first thing I did when I got to the apartment was turn on the Tv and since there is an hour difference I got to see the second plane hit. I was stunned then terrified since I was so far from home and was due to fly out on the 14th of September and knew as soon as I saw the plane hit I wasn't flying anytime soon even though I only get to go home every other weekend.I watched TV the rest of the day and nite and was so sick from what I was seeing I never made it to work the next day. It was terrifying being so far from home. I wasn't able to sleep for days and couldn't concentrate on anything for what seemed like forever. Even though the airports were reopened up by the time the 14th I was so hysterical I couldn't even think of getting on an airplane. My husband ended up driving out and spending almost a week with me to calm me down and I didn't fly home until my next scheduled trip on the 28th of September. My wedding anniversary is the 12th of Sept and instead of joy its a constant reminder of how many other wives will never celebrate another one themselves. I found myself constantly worrying about terrorism, I wasn't sure if I could continue in the profession I was in due to the constant travel amd I realized just how precious time and people are. Once I was able to overcome my fears I realized that no matter what happens worrying wasn't going to stop it and I needed to get back on track. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The fireman, rescue personnel and police officers who risked their lives without regard for their own. The volunteers who did everything and anything to help. The way we as Americans stood proud and banded together .Last but not least the president, George Bush and his wife Barbara. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I remember sitting on the Grand Central parkway, stuck in traffic. I was listening to the radio and they came across with a news alert that a plane had struck one of the towers. Now, they didnt know that it was a commercial airplane. They figured, and I shared their logic, that a small aircraft had crashed and that it was an accident. Then another report came over the radio that it was a large airplane and that the tower was on fire. I kept driving, not realizing the horror that was unfolding only a few miles from me. I was on my way to school for an alumni day, but all activities were cancelled one we realized what was going on. There was so much confusion. Planes were missing and I knew that my Father and Brother were both in Manhattan. We sat in front of the University Center and cried. Cell Phones were not working and we could see the black smoke. I sat there watching TV but knowing what I was really watching was the destruction of part of our city. It was so close but seemed so unreal. The 2nd tower was hit and we sat there in silence as we watched the towers collapsed. Finally they shut down the school and I tried to make my way home, which is in Woodside Queens-about a 20 min train ride away from Manhattan. There was no one driving on the highway. I was actually heading west-towards Manhattan. I was the only car for miles. I got off my exit and the smell just hit me. The air was thick and people were just standing all around. People were dying just a few miles away from us-At this point I still had not reached my mom or brother. I sat outside our apartment and thats when I saw people walking down Queens Blvd. They were covered in dirt and soot. They had walked from Manhattan. This is how my brother got home that day. I am so lucky to still my brother. He was suppose to be working in the towers that day but had a last minute switch. My Father had not gone to work that day, having completed the last project he was working on which had been in the towers. It was too close to my family. It was too scary and yet we were so lucky. Other families didnt have our luck. People were crying because they knew that someone in their own family had died. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Woodside was hit very hard. Its a working class neighborhood with a long tradition of union workers, firefighters and cops. The days after those COWARDS drove those planes into the towers, were just full of funerals. There was just so much death in our little community. Streets were blocked off so the mourners could form lines and pay their respects. So many firefighters, so many young people. People had I have grown up with were dead. People who had babies and families and who brought goodness into our world were dead. They werent political people. They were going to work because they had to support themselves. They were living life, going about their everyday routine. All around NYC there were posters of missing people. The TV was full of people pleading to people to look out for their Father, Mother, Sister, etc. This is when I got so angry. To compound it, NYC had become a draw to the curious. Curiosity seekers who were taking pictures of the missing person posters. THOSE ARE HUMAN BEINGS! REAL PEOPLE WHO ARE MISSING AND WHO ARE LOVED AND WHO ARE PROBABLY DEAD BECAUSE SOME COWARDS HATE AMERICA! I would scream at these curiosity seekers, try to get them to understand. There was so much pain in my city, why try to turn that into some sort of a sick side show?!? Fast forward a few months and I loan my sister a book. She opens it up and inside is an address for an office in Tower 1. "Why is this written here?" she asked. Than I told her that was the office which had offered me a job and we didnt speak about that again. She didnt want to wrap her hands around that possibility. It was just too much. I am now closer to my family than I have ever been. Life is too short to have grudges and pettiness between you. You never know when it can all change. It should not fade into the background ever. Please dont ever let it fade because I know that I will carry the anger and pain until the day I die. I dont want it to become a holiday in which people view it as a vacation day and kids are happy. We as a country should never forget the pain but don't let it control us or cower. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On the morning of September 11, 2002, I was in a school classroom. All was normal that day until a teacher interrupted class saying "Something bad just happened, something bad just happened!'" We turned on the television just as the second plane hit the tower. My first and only reaction to it all was one of disbelief. It all seemed like a movie or some sick joke. As the morning wore on and we learned of the attacks on the Pentagon, we all watched in awe. The entire day and night was spent watching the news. I guess it was in anticipation of some great survival story, but they were few and far between. I don't feel as comfortable flying in planes or even being at large sporting eventws. I feel like some sense of security has been taken away from me. I am now even prouder than ever to be an American. Before the attacks, I didn't know how good we really have it and now i can better understand how good it really is here in America. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I belive that the most important thing that should be remember about September 11th is how we all made it through. That day, in all of America, although devastated, everybody was willing to lend a helping hand. Whether people helped by actually going to ground zero and searching through the debris or if they just lent a listening ear, everybody was a helper. I think the world should remember not only the lives lost, but the incredible story of how an entire nation came together as one. My family, like many Americans, bought a flag on Septermber 12th. Since then we have proudly displayed it outside of our home. My teacher did not say a word, and a classmate of mine left the room crying. Thoughts were running through my head, I knew nothing good could come out of this, I pondered about the fact that a classmate could have passed away or maybe someone had a severe illness. As my classmates all drew there attention to the television, we saw a plane crashing into the twin towers. It was replayed over and over all day. The counciling office was full of people, everyone was crying it was a day that will never be forgotten. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? For instance, security is completly tight now in the airports and at every event involving a lot of people and especially the famous. Also my life has changed because our country is now in war with the Afganistans and the innocent people are now in danger. Its really sad that we would have to put so many people through so much, all because of one awful man. I hope some how we can find a way to get Osama and leave the country alone. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was (and still am) a telephone reservationist for the Museum of Science in Boston. That morning, I watched as planes took off from Logan Airport on my drive in- something I see every day. As those first planes took off, I was unlocking my office, preparing for what was supposed to be another busy day working with schools planning trips. After the first plane hit the towers, I got an instant message from a friend online-- She stated that a small plane may have crashed into a large building in NYC, could I confirm? Being the newshound that my friends think I am, I set to it. Oddly, the major sites (CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Boston.com) were too busy and I couldn't get through immediately, but I did manage to confirm my friend's story to my utmost horror-- You see, by then the second plane had crashed into the towers. I panicked. I work on the phones in a secluded office all day, but from the adjacent libary we can see the entire Boston skyline. I looked out on it in fear and found nothing but a crystal clear early fall morning. Soon we came to realize we had a unique position-- Each of us had access to phones that worked with relative regularity. I set to calling friend's families, letting them know that I'd heard from their loved one and that they were well. I called home and got news updates from my father, who was watching the television and monitoring the radio stations. I instant messaged dozens of friends to check on them, and the journaling site I used (livejournal.com) had strangers banding together to keep each other informed as news sites remained difficult to access due to volume. The only news footage I saw during that day was piped in to show on a large screen in our exhibits area.. And as I watched in astonished horror, behind me small children played, unaware of how much the world they lived in had changed. I will never forget that sound of innocent laughter, and the utter sadness that it drove into my heart. I left Boston at 5pm and never, even during a major snow storm, have I seen the city so empty and quiet. The planes were all grounded, the highways deserted.. It was a long, spooky drive home. The 12th was actually a harder day for me. I'd finally seen everything that happened on the news and the horror was too much to bear. Couple that with having to locate and confirm the name of a lost friend on one of the doomed flights and I was completely wrecked. My grandmother was 20 when Pearl Harbor occured, and now here I was, experiencing something so frighteningly similar-- an attack on our own soil. Since then I have learned to be more careful, more vigilante in watching my surroundings. I've learned to taking nothing for granted as well. I tell those I love that I am thinking of them every chance I get. This fall I returned to school, and I am making every effort to make each day matter. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We should remember that on that day we learned, to a degree, what it feels to live like in a nation under seige. If we forget that, we lose our capacity for compassion for other beleaguered nations. We should remember the unity we saw immediately following. I've never seen such an outpouring of care and concern from Americans as a nation before-- For that day, we were one. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My husband and I were in Emporia, Kansas for the funeral of my grandmother. We were staying with a friend of mine from school. We had waken up and were having coffee, when her mother called and told her to turn the tv on. When the tv was turned on, it was like it was a dream. The WTC was on fire and no one really knew at the time what had happened. Then, moments later, the second tower was hit on live tv by another plane. We just sat there speechless, not knowing what to say or do. By then, reports were comming over the air about the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. My brother had come to take us to the bus to return home to Dallas. By then, we were very scared, because our two small children were here in Dallas with my mother-in-law. We left to get the bus, but were delayed by an hour due to the attacks. That was when we heard on the radio about the WTC collapsing. My heart collapsed along with it. By the time we returned to Dallas that night, we did not truely understand the impact until we got home and watched the replay. I felt violated as an American. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was Tuesday September 11, 2001, about 9:10 in the morning when I was sitting in home room. As usual I sat staring blankly into a notebook wondering "Gee, what am I going to do? Life stinks!" My head rose from my notebook and up to the television where Channel One news had usually played, only this time it was something different. Mr. Slampak had on CNN and there on the screen was a building in flames! I had no idea what it was that was going on or even if it was real, "maybe some new special effects from a movie?", I thought to myself. That was when a voice came over the television. It was the voice of a reporter saying frantically that "A plane has just struck one of the twin towers!" It was then that a second airplane flew into the second tower. Screams from the panicked people on the streets of New York coming from the television rang throughout the classroom. That was the point where I realized what was happening. It was history in the making. Our country was being attacked by terrorists! The news was absolutely terrifying, every person that had heard of the news was in a panic. It was not until second period that news of two more plane crashes was learned. When news of the plane crash in the nearby town of Shanksville Pennsylvania reached us, chills filled everybody around, almost as if their blood ran cold. Then I realized how stupid my thinking earlier had been, that life was just so hard. It took this tragedy to actually wake me up and become aware of how thing in the world really were. We all thought because we lived in the great United States of America that nothing could harm us, but that was so untrue. This was such a horrible experience for all of us, yet strangely it took such tragedy to bring us all together. Living through this experience has made us all stronger, and as long as we live nobody will ever forget what happened on that day. How such tragedy turned into love, faith, and hope for the entire nation. This day in history will truly never be forgotten. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I witnessed history on September llth early in the morning. I had gotten ready early for school and had time to spare so i turned on my television to watch the morning news. It was the Today show where i saw a smoking building on the screen. I thought it was a fire of a building at first, but then i thought it was part of a movie. Finally, i scrolled my eyes to the bottom of the screen where it read New York City. Then the voices of the commentators sunk it we had been hit, but at the time only one was hit so i thought it was an accident. When i arrived at school my teacher informed us that another was hit. She told us it was probably a terrorist group of some kind, most likely Osama bin Laden. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. No, it hasnt. It has been normal. This proves to me that life goes on after tragedy. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That when the terrorists attacked us our nation became more united. We had proven our name of the United States of America. We put on bumper stickers and put an American flag out in the front of my house. Since September 11, it has become a symbol of pride to me, pride in our glorius nation. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was working in a real estate office in Clarksville, Indiana. A friend called and said to turn on the TV a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. Our broker was on a flight from Louisville to Phoenix at the time the planes hit the WTC. The rest of the day was spent glued to the TV and trying to find our broker. I was in shock. I was terrified of what might happen next. I prayed for God's protection on our country and my family. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My husband, a major in the Army Reserve, was put on duty by lunch time on September 11th. He eventually was placed on a team responsible for securing Fort Knox and the surrounding communities from terrorist acts. From that position he moved into his current position as Directorate of Plans and Mobilization at Fort Knox. He travels alot and works in a classified area. Both of our sons are in the military. I worry that they may get sent somewhere. September 11th has impacted our family greatly. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That hate never wins. That all men are created equal. We cannot judge another by his religion or color of his skin. The terrorists were full of hate and prejudice. We must not let ourselves become like that. There is no one on this earth that God does not love. We should also remember those who gave their lives for others and for our country. We have many brave men and women in our armed forces who do a difficult job sometimes in terrible circumstances and are greatly underpaid. We owe them our respect, honor and gratitude. The firemen, policmen and other emergency people who responded and the civilians who responded to the terror stikes. Many gave their lives for friends and strangers alike. I have always felt a deep love for the flag. I tear up anytime I see the flag in a parade or other type of procession. I have great pride for our flag and what it stands for. God Bless the USA.
