NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a college student in the Midwest living in a boarding house just outside campus grounds. Before departing for the first class of the day, I logged onto the web to check my e-mail. I noticed on my homepage what looked like a movie preview. The next moment, I realized that it was supposedly a news article but I thought that the website may have been hacked. I tried to log onto a major news website but their server was busy. I started to feel anxious. My class would have started in ten minutes so I began to walk to class without being 100% sure if the terrorism was real. When I arrived at the academic building, I saw large crowds around television monitors. Then it was obvious. I only knew that planes were steered into the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The class, a requirement for a Mechanical Engineering degree, was called "Intermediate Strength of Materials". I learned that one tower collapsed when the professor said that burning jet fuel was the reason for the collapse of the tower. A student corrected the professor by informing him (and me) that both towers collapsed. After class concluded I walked to another building where I knew larger television sets would provide clearer views of the day's events. The image of the second tower being hit brought out emotions not felt since the space shuttle disaster. It also brought out other emotions, like disgust. I was snugged up cozzily in my bed, sleeping the night away. I was tired, I was groggy, and I was not happy to hear the response that came next; especially around 6 in the morning. My dearest father ran through the doors of my chamber and yelled. "WAKE UP! We're going to war!!!" My first thoughts, being a world war two buff, was some kind of similar enactment to Pearl Harbor. I screamed, jumped out of my bed and was quickly under it, ducking and covering for my life. He peeked one eye opening shaking and saw my father, with a rather blank look on his face, probably wondering, 'Is this girl my daughter?' Embarrassed, I felt like kicking him, I got out, with difficulties; under my bed is not a very big space, and I got to wondering how I squeezed under there in the first place. My father just shook his head as I yawned and dropped back under my covers, trying to cacth a few more moments of sleep before the dreaded day of school started. With a growl, he turned on my TV, and showed me what was happening, then left. I pulled my blankets around me, trying to keep warm and trying to comprehend the situation that was going on. Watching the TV reply over and over the event soon got dull and I shut it off and got dressed. I didn't think much about the situation and went downstairs to eat. However once I went to school, the matter got a little more interesting and I paid attention to what my teachers had to say. I watched the news most of the day; however it didn't get my out of doing works; which sucked I might add, but anyways, it was an interesting day. I can't say I cried, I can't say no real sorrow ever really hit my heart or soul, but what I can say it, its going to be a day I'll remember. I don't know what I felt, perhaps an awareness? That we aren't truly an unstoppable nation. Maybe it was dissapointment? How could the people we trust with our taxes, our money, our security let this happen? Well, whatever it was, whatever that feeling that stuck with me for the rest of the day until I fell into slumper was, I know, I don't want to feel it again. The people that fell to that tragic event are in a happier place. Life goes on, we're aware of what can happen. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? This is a lesson, a harsh, cruel, lesson, but never-the-less a lesson. Our country is not unstoppable. We are not an unstoppable nation. Our pride turned to ego, and the ego was over-inflated. I can't say this wasa good thing that happened, but it was a good lesson. We as a nation need to be prepared, take more pre-cations. People say "We never expected this" or "How could the government let this happen?" Well, the government, the president, everyone of us, should be more aware now, especially now. I was in crafts class, 3rd period and a girl came running into my class yelling that the twin towers just got hit by a plane. Our teacher turned on the T.V. and we all sat in silence watching whatwe thought was an accident, then while we were watching, the 2nd building got hit. Then we knew that it wasn't a accident. I was in my tenth grade health class. We watched the news just after the first plane hit and we watched watched as the second plane slammed into the tower. We watched in awe as the towers came crashing down. I dont think any of us actually realized the magnitude of what had actually happened.We didn't realize how much damage had been done and how many lives had been lost. My father is in the military and for alomost the past two years he has been away with the armed forces. I heard the news upon my return home, immediately called the Red Cross to ask if there was anything I could do all the way out here in Arizona and so far from the attacks, but the line was busy constantly. My neighbor and I decided we needed to take our kids out of school, not knowing what was next and wanting them near us. I fit 2 adults and 7 children in my Taurus just to get them all home quickly. We came home and my son, then 5 going on 6, and I watched the events unfold. It was maybe 9 am here in Tucson. My young son watched for some time, as I explained what was happening, what the towers and the Pentagon were, what terrorists are, then said to me, "Mom, this is not good...not good at all." I cried. It is what built this nation from the start...America is courage, strength of the heart, and no matter what some zealots might try to pass off on the rest of us, America was born, and thrived, with God right alongside our government. I have always flown the Flag, and put up patriotic decorations for all such holidays. I now see red, white, and blue with one more color alongside it, though...black. Sometimes yellow comes to mind as well. If the Gulf War didn't drill that home to me, this sure did the rest of the job. On the anniversary Tucson, Arizona did another groundbreaker. We were the first to do a 15,000 person, human flag on the field of a stadium shortly after the initial attacks. It was made into a postcard and distributed across the country. Tonight, on the anniversary, 12,000 had glow sticks, and along with police, firefighters, military, the U of A band and color guard, formed a giant, human 9/11 on the field. We turned off the lights, broke our glow sticks, and created a glowing, human 9/11 in the dark of the night. Fireworks followed as we all sang throughout the evening, patriotic songs. On September 11, 2002, I was at my office working on the computer, anticipating my trip the next day to fly from Boston to San Francisco to attend a wedding, when I heard a coworker announce that two planes crashed into the World Trade Center. As a former resident of New York City, and with close ties to families there, and great fondness for the Twin Towers, I was hoping that this was not New York's World Trade Center. I immediately went to the news website on the computer, and was in total disbelief to observe the photograph of the World Trade Center burning. It was a sickening sight. We were let out of work early, but before I arrived home, I heard, perhaps from a radio that was playing, that one of the Towers collapsed, and later, a second Tower collapsed. As clear as the word "collapsed" means today, my immediate interpretation was that the Towers were still standing, and a few floors caved in at the top. Even when I first saw the Towers fall on television, because of all the smoke and dust, I thought that the Towers were still there, but were only obscured by the dust. Perhaps there are some events that are so horrific and unbelievable, that the mind refuses to accept what the eye is seeing. I saw the Twin Towers as a building, along with the people inside, as a living soul that was being destroyed. Each time they showed the images of the plane striking the South Tower, I winced as if a knife was slicing against this living body. Having grown up in New York City, I saw the Twin Towers being built during the period when I took the PATH train from New York to New Jersey while going to college. The two sleek Towers of the World Trade Center were an uplifting sight, and they were such great monuments of our time, and a visible symbol of New York City. Now that it is missing, I feel an emptiness and sadness, each time I think about it, or when I am reminded of it in pictures, movies, or while I am in New York City, looking at a changed Lower Manhattan skyline, to see that the famous landmark is really gone. I remember the heart-stopping moment when I, along with so many others here on the opposite side of the nation, watched what had taken place in New York. On the morning of September 11th, 2001, I was teaching my first period of ninth grade students at Vestavia Hills High School in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. I had entered the building just minutes before the attack, and had no idea of the tragic events until a vague announcement was made over the intercom. The secretary reassured students and faculty that there had been some kind of attack, but all was safe for us for the time being. My emotions flipped from fear to confusion; I immediately wanted to check on my family. I knew that whatever had happened, I had to remian calm and secure for my students. Some of them were joking about it, not fully realizing the gravity of the situation. Others were scared and confused like me. I asked my class is they would abject to a few minutes or prayer time. I explained that I was not forcing anyone to pray, but that I felt it was more than appropriate to remember those in harm's way, and the security of our nation in prayer. They readily agreed. We did not get the full story until much later when we finally gained access to a television. As I watched in shocked silence, I saw the WTC collapse again and again. When I finally talked to my husband and children, mother and father, I wanted to weep - weep for those lost, weep for those who had lost precious loved ones, and weep with gratitude that I still had mine. I pray that citizens would stop hiding behind political correctness and stand for what they believe in, and that they believe in protecting our country, families, and way of life. I think we should remember that we can never take for granted the freedom for which many brave men and women fought and gave their lives. I think we should remember the honor and integrity that many displayed on that day, and try not to reserve it for emergencies. I was awakened by a phone call from my brother, back east, who is a firefighter. He told me to get the kids up so he could talk to them very quickly before he headed to the site. I was heartbroken that he was taking such a risk, but I knew in a way that I could never explain that this was his duty. It was something he MUST do. For 8 very long days, we struggled to continue on with our lives, as close to normal as possible, but still keeping our eyes and ears on the t.v., trying not to let reality set in. After finally hearing that he was, physically, okay, we cried and breathed huge sighs of relief, only to find out that many of his "brothers" were NOT okay. We cried more for their families. I am more proud of the people in this country than I ever was! I can no longer listen to patriotic songs without getting that lump in the throat. That's pride. We watched the early events together while on the phone. It was strange that we both were tuned into the same netwrk at the same time. I said the Pledge of Allegance as a child and can't believe that children are not allowed to say it in schools today. I really didn't think of what was going on, since I had no clue what the severities of the attack were. I went to third period (World Geography) thinking nothing of it. My brother came to get me during class, to take me home. On the way home, he had a song by Cold playing, called "End of the World". It made me think: "What if this is it? My first reaction was, Im scared of HEIGHTS.. I called her on her celllphone and asked if she found what she needed and she replied" odont worry I have it.. hey whats for lunch?" I said listen girl its 8:40 in the am, are you crazy! she says back "wait for me and we'll do our everyday lunch" and ends the conversation with "I love you" I say "ditto" that would be the last time I hear her voice, her laughter. 5-10 minutes later I get a call from Rajesh MIrpuri saying "a bomb went off" we're fine but tell us what u want us to do. I quickly told our CEO and he informed me to call emergency services. we all tuned our radios and computers to msnbc and heard " plane crashes into WTC" 15 mintues pass, choas is finding its way down Braodway and I go down walk to the corners of Mulblurry and Greene(i think) I looked up and saw this ohter plane coming straight into the other tower.. as 1,000s of us just watched in amazement this fireball crashes into 2 world trade, I quickly lost the ground under my foot and fainted! I suddenly realized "hey, we have 4 employees up there"! a few other co-workers brought me back from what I thought was a nightmare. ONce in our office, wifes, brothers, sisters, mothers wre showing up or calling asking for their loved us.. we lost 4 employees, co-workers , family and friends on that faithful day; 3 unrecovred but presummed dead.
