When i heard about the September 11th attacks i was at school and i really didn't actually see how bad it was until i went home and watched the news as they were showing video of what had hapened. My first thougt was it might have been a plane crash but when they said that the other tower was it just like the first one then i realized that it was a deliberate act. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001 started out as an ordinary day. I was getting ready for work and like I always do, I turned on the television to watch the news and weather. This time as I tuned to CNN I saw a building with smoke billowing out. I called my husband, Tom, into the room. I remember saying, "Look at this! What would cause a plane to run into a tall building?" Tom, being a retired Army officer became alert and said we are under attack. Not to long after that we saw live on the television a second plane close to the second tower and sure enough it hit. We knew that instant Tom was right. Immediately we called our son, Dave, and our son and daugher in law, Mike and Jenna. We woke them and told them to turn to the news. Soon after that the Pentagon was hit and then there was a fourth plane. They were in disbelief as they watched. This was new to them and to us a new war had begun. I continued to go to work that day, taking a small television with me. Customers watched the updates and stood in disbelief. It was hard to continue on in any way of normalcy. Very few people were out and about. The streets had little traffic on them, towns and cities were very quite, childern were not outside playing. The skies were very quiet, it seemed even the wild birds and animals took on a silence. Living very near McConnell Air Force Base we still would hear a jet take off every so often. At night the skies were quiet. I would look up at the night sky and wonder when any plane other than military would fly again. It was so strange not to hear planes above and not see their lights in the sky. I wondered if we would every hear them again. Would we be here the next day or the day after that. I think everyones lives have changed. I know mind did. Yes, I continued on with a somewhat normal life, but I am more alert to my surroundings and to people around me. Both in and out of my neigborhood, which at one time was my safe zone. I pick up on people who speak a foreign language and dress in their countries attire. I am leary of groups of people. When sirens sound or I see emergency lights I am more atuned to them. I wonder what has happened now. I call my sons, mother and brother more frequently. Each day I try to live to its fullest. As a quilter I joined in to make a quilt. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? September 11 will always be remembered as the day thousands of lives were given for our freedeom...all in one day....America was attacked. We should remember what freedom stands for, why generations before us came to this great land, why we should not take anything for granted again...we should have learned with Pearl Harbor, but being of the nature we are, we are to trusting. We never thought it could happen again, but it did, and this time we should listen to this history and NEVER let it be repeated again. An American Flag flies frequently at our house. That day it was out immediately. My husband saw to that. He was on the web and was able to print out a picture of the twin towers with an Eagle and tear. Tom put it in a frame. I drove to the local grocery store and grabbed some patriotic balloons. When I got to work I dressed up the front window for all people to see, you see I was going to make sure the place I worked had a flag flying that day and that those people who gave their lives for freedom would be honored. People stopped by the window to pay tribute to those who soared. I have attended many military and public fuctions over the years. The flag was always very meaningful to me. I am and have always been proud to fly the flag and be an American, I am even prouder today then yesterday. Where else could we have such freedoms? I was in the school computer lab around 9:30 when I overheard other students talking about some horrible accident in New York where a plane crashed into a city skyscraper. I thought I must have heard wrong, or that they were recalling a movie or something outside of reality. Then I saw a picture on the internet of a building with a cloud of fire around it. I still denied its validity; it was probably just a digitally altered picture. I left the library not thinking much of the rumors I had heard. Shortly after, the school principal made an announcement. He broke the news that, not one, but two commercial airplanes had crashed into the "Twin Towers" in New York. I could deny reality no longer. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Living in Atlanta, GA, I watched the horror unfold moment by moment in my living room. It began as a normal morning as I planned to make cupcakes for my son's second birthday party the next day at his preschool. He was no longer interested in the cartoon he had been watching so I switched the channel to a morning news show while he played with our dog. At that time, the first plane had just struck the tower. Initially, in the confusion, it was reported that a possible problem with air traffic control was to blame. Then, with cameras focused on the billowing smoke spilling from the first tower, I watched in horror as the second plane hit. At first I was in shock, realizing that I had just witnessed the last moments of life for those on the plane and many in the second tower. I hoped they did not know what was about to happen. It became quite clear at this time that we were under attack. A reporter commented that the tower appeared to be leaning but attributed it to the camera angle. A while later, the first tower collapsed, soon to be followed by the second in a very surreal scene. Another reporter was broadcasting from the Pentagon. In the middle of his report, he said the Pentagon shook and that he heard an explosion. Soon we learned that the Pentagon had also been hit by a plane. As my mother works in Washington DC in a building that would have been a likely target, I frantically tried to reach her. My friends immediately began calling to see if I had talked to her, which I had not. Over two hours passed before she was able to get through. I had never been so happy to hear her voice and know that she was alright. She had been evacuated and finally made it home. However, during this time, another plane was reported down in Pennsylvania and all planes were being forced to land. It seemed as if the attack would never end and that we were living an unimaginable nightmare. With all the chaos and activity on the news, the skies were eerily quiet over our neighborhood without the familiar sound of jets and small planes that, until that day, I had never paid much attention to. I still pause and feel a twinge of panic when I hear a plane that seems to be flying unusually low. Looking back on the anniversary of that horrible day, we know how it ended. However, at the time, no one knew how many more planes had been hijacked, how many more targets would be hit and how many more innocent people would lose their lives. Thankfully, my son did not understand what was happening and will never bear the emotional scars of witnessing the horror unfold live in our living room. I am most grateful that he could blissfully laugh and play when all I could do was cry. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I, like most Americans, have a much greater appreciation for family, friends and freedom. During the first months after the attack, I lived fearfully, regularly experiencing sleepless nights and nightmares. I wondered what kind of world my son would grow up in as it seemed vastly different from the one I knew prior to September 11th. I wondered if I could keep him safe and protect him from harm. I never enjoyed flying as an adult, and still have no desire to board a plane, though I will eventually have to face that obstacle. However, as time passed, I decided that my faith was stronger than my fear and that I would continue to live with the purpose of being a good person and a good citizen. This is our country and we will see our ideals and way of life prevail. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The people who perished that day were mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, husbands and wives. They aren't faceless names or impersonal numbers. They were us and we are them. They paid the ultimate price for simply being Americans. In their honor, we should no longer take our freedom for granted, but remember that it was bought and paid for with their blood, and that of many before them throughout our history. We should always remember that we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude, embracing our freedom and the responsibilities that come with it. I have an American flag flying outside my home and have since September 11th. I am embarrased to say I had never flown one before that date. Prior to that day, I did not fully understand what a gift I had been given to be called American simply as my birthright. I realize that it is not just a title, but a priviledge and a responsibility that must be defended. I will instill this in my child, that he may be a good citizen and stand for what he believes in. The American flag, my flag, will always fly outside my home in defiance of those who seek to destroy our ideals and way of life. As a college student in Missouri, my morning ritual consists of hitting my snooze button numerous times until my TV kicks on to let me know it's time to get up. Most often, ESPN SportsCenter is what I wake up to. But on Sept. 11, there were no highlights from the previous night's games, no box scores or witty commentary. Rather, I woke up to the sight of a wounded tower with billows of smoke rising from it. This didn't alarm me. Just another unfortunate flight mishap, I figured. A terrible accident. My son, who was 16 at the time, woke me up to have me watch the news about the World Trade Center "being on fire". He thought that it had only caught fire, as did I when I first started watching ... until I started hearing what was being speculated on and then the sight of the second plane heading for the next tower drove home that this was not right, it was not a freak accident, and that something else was oh so terribly wrong. My son and I sat there in horror watching the first tower burn as the second plane headed inward toward the second tower and collide with it ... we both turned and looked at each other, simultaneoulsly saying "Oh My God" !!! I couldn't think or react ... it was like I was watching something unreal ... until the first tower started to collapse and then it really hit me, and I mean really hit me !!! All those people !!! Knowing they were there - in the tower still alive, all those people on the planes, my heart and mind were devastated for all of those people right there that very second it happening, knowing the horror that was in store for their families - all these raging emotions and fear for these people in just a matter of seconds. I remember saying to my son "Oh My God Nick, all those people" as the first tower went down, and all he was able to say was "I know Mom". My life has changed only a small amount, but I believe my 18 year old daughter and 17 year old son's impressions and perspectives of the real world out there have changed drastically. I, being a 43 year old single mom, haven't had the luxury of seeing the world through their eyes in a very, very long time - their views veiled in a certain innocence still. However, that innocence was destroyed by vile creatures that dub themselves 'holy men'. My kids were awakened to the horrible truth that while it is still a beautiful world with more beautiful people in it, there are, and always will be - some dangerously sick, twisted people out there bent on attempting to destroy that which is good and decent. I say attempt, because in this case - they failed miserably in their attempt to undermine and destroy us. It backfired beautifully in such that it served to unify us more, and produce intense feelings of love and allegience for our country that has sadly been missing for far too long a time. My heart is gladdened by the fact though, that during the time my kids were growing up, I tried to instill in them feelings of patriotism and respect for their country and the people that have given their lives and time for this country, but it always seemed that they thought I was just a nutty mom with too old fashioned ideas - but because of the 11th, my kids now have a totally different view on things and their feelings are a little more passionate about this country, and for this country, not quite like Mom's, but they're there. Now it's a little more like they 'feel' this is their country, it's not just a bunch of connected states that you learn about in history. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everything good and everything bad. We need to remember it all. One does not supercede the other. Both are now an irrevocable interwoven piece of history, and must be remembered in all it's ugliness and beauty, and pay attention to the ugliness and beauty it in turn created in us, if we, and future generations are to truly learn from it ... honor it ... and never to harbor the very type of hatred that created the monsters that did this. Absolutely !!! And my daughter had me take her to go get red, white, and blue ribbon so that she could make a bow and streamers to fly from my antennae on the back of my car, and I'm proud to say that those ribbons are STILL flying proudly from the back of my car since that September - we have never once taken them off, not even to wash the car ... and the most unusual thing about it is that they don't look worn and tattered, they still look proud and strong - JUST LIKE THE U.S.A. !!! As for my feelings and my respect for the flag and all that she represents and the people that have given their lives with conviction and pride for her ... all of that which I think, respect, feel, and believe in has only been magnified and renewed with a resolve that no time will ever be able to diminish. I had placed a television set under the window and divided my time between watching reports on the tv and the smoking towers outside. When the first tower fell, I vividly remember being very concerned about the life of a news reporter I had just seen standing by the lobby of one of the buildings. The magnitude of what had happened had not yet sunk in. I remember looking out of my window and seeing Manhattan blanketed in smoke and dust. You didn't see roads or cars or life. What you saw was a cloud of black smoke, soot, and ash with the tops of skyscrapers sticking through. All news cameras had gone dead. I remember saying out loud that no one could be alive in that. When I went to bed at night that semester, I always looked at the magificent view of the New York skyline before I went to sleep. It was one warm September morning when I awakened to the somewhat frightened voice of CBS's Dan Rather. He was telling me that a huge passenger airplane had collided into one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. At first I thought I had heared wrong, since I was still half asleep. Then I sat down on the soft bed in my mother's bedroom and listened. I had heard correctly. Mr. Rather repeated over and over again what had occurred,I suddenly felt a feeling of fright as the comfy mattress began to feel like a hard rock similar to those of the Sierra Madre. "A terrorist act?" I thought, "Can't be, not in the U.S." I turned once again towards the TV and spotted a shadowy figure approaching the other WTC tower."O Dios!(Oh God!)" I remember saying, as the figure smashed into the other twin tower. The screen showed a ball of fire and then quickly returned to Dan Rather. Still in shock, Mr. Rather further informed us that these were, without a doubt, horrific acts of terrorism being carried out against the United States. "Oh man" I once again thought, before hearing about another jumbo jet that had just crashed into the Pentagon, the FBI headquarters. I sat still, not being able to move, and watched as the screen shifted once again to the World Trade Center. There they where, two towers, one American symbol, fighting to stay up. But then the unthinkable happened, the first tower collapsed, then the second. A permanent image tatooed in my mind for life. I was sitting at my desk in Newton MA, and a co-worker walked by and said "A plane just hit the WTC". At first, like everyone else, I thought it was an accident. Some pilot must have lost control. So, my boss put on the TV in her office and we all went in to watch. As we watched, the second plane came in. I couldnt believe what I was watching. I thought for sure it was all a nightmare. I had just become a mother in June 2001. All my thoughts were that I wanted to be with my family. And I couldnt stop thinking that I brought my poor child into this crazy, cruel world. I thanked the Gods I didnt have to go home and explain the insane thinking process of the men that planned and executed these horrific attacks. We watched all the attacks unfold. Heard all the rumors. Were scared out of our minds, not knowing what was going to happen next. My thoughts then went to the innocent people who got up that morning and got ready for work, got thier coffee, went to thier offices...they didnt have a chance to say a final goodbye to thier loved ones. They didnt have the chance to hug thier spouses, children, mothers, fathers and say I love you. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was substitute teaching in the fifth grade on the morning of September 11, 2001. The kids were distracted and talking about what they had seen and heard in their other classes...planes flying into the World Trade Center? It couldn't be true. The children asked to see the coverage on our classroom t.v. I talked to the other fifth grade teachers, and decided that the kids were old enough to watch the coverage of events and discuss it in our classroom too. They were so distracted that I knew for a few hours anyway, they needed to know what was happening, discuss it, and express their feelings, fears, and whatever else they were thinking at the time. Our school is in a small rural town in the Southeast corner of Kansas. Even so, the kids had many questions regarding the possibility of terrorism reaching us. Another common concern was voiced by those children who had relatives or loved ones in the military and the Guard. Emotions ranged from disbelief to fear to compassion. I was touched by their heartfelt sympathy for those in the attacks. There came a point when we were able to focus on our studies for a change. I think being able to talk about what was happening was cathartic and reassuring for the children. I know it was for me. Later that day, on the way to pick up my own children from daycare, I thought how strange it was to be viewing even my small part of the United States as vulnerable to such evil acts. Could it happen here in our corner of Kansas? Bio-terrorism, germ warfare, utilities attacks, I admit that these thoughts and many more raced through my mind for the next several days. I asked Jesus to be with those involved in the attacks. I could not imagine the pain or horror...then I said a special and tearful prayer of thanks for my children, my family and friends, my church. The tears would continue to flow, at their will, over the next several months. Like many people, I could not help but stop and watch and listen to the coverage of that day. How could another human willingly take the lives of so many people, cowardly and shamefully veiled in the name of honor? September 11, 2001, is a day of horror, pain, fear and confusion, but in another part of my heart it remains a day of compassion, bravery, and patriotism. I would imagine many of my fellow Americans rode that roller coaster of emotions just as I did. I am sure that many of them, like myself, have focused on the fact that for all the evil present that day, it brought out the good and the Amercian spirit in our citizens, which ultimately, will defeat evil and its perpetrators. I am more outspoken about my beliefs as a born-again Christian, and I find myself more involved in different aspects of my political beliefs. I have always considered myself a compassionate person, but this past year, I felt led to share that compassion not just through prayer or tithing for special projects at church, but with people I am actually in contact with in my life. I am a single mom of two boys, ages three and five, and a full-time college student. I don't always have a lot of money, but I have faith in God, and when I see a need that I feel God is asking me to meet in someone's life, whether it be food and basic necessities for someone who has just moved, or a card of encouragement and a listening ear for a newly sinlge parent, I do what I can to fulfill that person's needs. Regardelsss of religion or any other factor, all humans need help and support at some time and place in their lives. I have been in that boat many times myself. Sometimes, you can be family for someone that doesn't have their family close by, or may not have a family at all. At other times, people are truly encouraged and bolstered by the fact that you are earnestly praying for them, not only for particular needs, but for peace and happiness in their lives. Often, I have been guilty of telling someone that praying is "the least" I can do for them, when I ought to be telling them it the first thing, and one of the greatest things I can do for them. September 11, 2001, forced me to think of life in ways in which I do not like to think. Life can be short and fleeting. Even when you think you are prepared for "that day" you are not. We are mortal. We make each day as we so choose. What impressions and values will I leave with my children? Will I wake up tomorrow? Will my children, parents, sisters, friends--will they be brought back to me safely tonight? Tomorrow night? The point is this: each morning God has blessed us enough to see, is a blank canvas. How and what we choose to paint on that canvas sets the tone for that day, and the examples we show our children and others. Most days, those "pictures" are routine, unframed, and stacked with a million others just like it. But on those rare occasions, what we paint changes our lives or the lives of those around us. They are moments not forgotten. They are framed, set apart for display, that all may see. Whether they are good or evil, heroic or cowardly, depends upon the painter. We all have "canvas days" like that. Many people on 9/11 painted their last canvas with valor, love, courage, hope. How am I painting my canvas today? How are you painting yours? NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? WHAT should be remembered is simple: compassion, love, bravery, valor, selflessness in the face of pain, destruction, death and evil. WHO should be remembered counts as well. The victims in the towers, at the Pentagon, in the three planes should be remembered. The families, friends, and loved ones of those murdered (yes, murdered, not killed) should be remembered. There should also be recogniton of those who continue to risk their lives on a daily basis for us and our country: firemen, police, EMTs, the armed forces, Coast Guard, etc., should all be recognized. They did their (usually) thankless jobs before 9/11, went over and above the call of duty during 9/11 and its aftermath, and continue in those jobs at this very moment. I have qualms about putting offices and businesses back on that site. I understand it is important economically, and some people argue emotionally, for business to rise again at the WTC site. But if it is all about the bottom line, and the importance of that sacred ground is overlooked, what kind of effect will that have on New Yorkers? Maybe there is a balance that can be achieved, but it will take a lot of work and dedication. Pesronally, I think the memorial should be more than just a fountain or a pond or even a pavillion. Each person lost on that site had a unique personality, family, friends, hobbies, accomplishments, -- a LIFE! Why not build a museum that honors each victim in a PERSONAL way? Photos, personal momentos, whatever each person's family would like the world to know about the loved one that was taken from them, could be dispalyed in individual exhibits. With an atrium and a garden and reflection pool, both could be filled with the favorite plants, flowers, and trees, of those lost, maybe even planted by loved ones, if they so chose. It shouldn't be gaudy, or sterile. It should be a celebration of each life represented within its halls, yet humble in decorum, to honor each of those lives in the most repspectful way. I'm not a New Yorker, and I did not know anyone lost that awful day, but I am an American, and committed to seeing my fellow Amercians honored for their ultimate sacrifice. I, shamefully, did not own an Amercian flag. Trying to buy one after 9/11 was a challenge...they couldn't keep them in stock! Luckily, an area newspaper placed printed paper flags in an edition of the paper. The flag is part of our nation's history. It SHOULD be honored. I think the best way to do that is to 1.) display the American flag; and 2.) SAY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE EACH AND EVERY DAY GOD GRANTS US ON THIS EARTH. That should be followed with PRAYER. If the courts in this land are too wimpy to stand up and allow it in schools, then PRACTICE IT AT HOME! Make sure your kids know how and why these things matter so much. Our American flag should be an active part of our lives today. It isn't just an old relic to be dusted off a few times each year. That is an insult to every man, woman, and child who fought and/or died for this country in war, duty, or acts of terrorism (homegrown and foreign). I'm sickened by photos or videos of malicious predators, claiming religious or political reasons, burning the U.S. flag. Holding the beacon of freedom high has a price, doesn't it? They can burn our flags, and our buidings, but that will NEVER extinguish the fire of freedom. Instead, they will look into our eyes and see the fires of determination, unquenchable hope, and gritty, unstoppable patriotism that defines who we are: AMERICANS! I was in my room getting ready for school listening to Howard Stern which is recorded not far from the WTC and they started talking about it when it happened, so first i went and tokd my dad what was happening then i finished getting ready and listened to them talk about what was happening then after i finished getting ready i went in the living room and turned on the tv, not long after that was when the second plane hit. At school everybody was talking about it but the only class where any of the teachers said anything about it was in my history class. When i came home that day and turned on the TV the coverage was on every channel and it stayed that way for a few days after the attack. My father, who was babysitting my children that day, walked into my house and immediately told me that there had been an accident in New York City at the World Trade Center. He and I turned on the television, which had focused on a live video feed of the WTC, which was in flames. As we watched, my children came into the room to see what was going on. I don't know why, but I had a sense of foreboding that told me to get them out of the room. I did not want them to be afraid to go inside tall buildings when we visited Cleveland. Immediately after they left the room, my father and I watched the second plane crash into the WTC. Like the rest of the world who witnessed this happen live, we could not believe what we had just seen on my TV. My children must have heard our cries, because they came running back into the room to see what was going on. All my father and I could do was cry and hold them tight. I kept telling them everything was going to be alright, but I knew that the world would not ever be the same. A little while later, I called my husband at his office and told him to turn on the TV. He said that his patients had already told him what was going on, and that they were watching in the waiting room. I hung up the phone and told him I would be leaving soon. As I walked outside, my garbage man was emptying our trash. I asked him if he knew about what had happened...he did not. I told him to go inside my house to watch. He stayed for two hours and watched with my Dad. In the meantime, I went to the office. By the time I got there, the Pentagon was now up in flames. We watched in between patients. My father called several times because he was worried about my brother who worked in the KeyBank building in Cleveland. Apparently, another plane had been hijacked and it was heading towards Cleveland. The KeyBank building is the tallest building in Cleveland, and it had been evacuated. My father could not reach my brother on his cellphone, and he was frantic. As this was going on, we heard local news reports of a plane flying very low over Akron and Youngstown. People were calling the local radio stations with their eyewitness accounts of this plane, and the schools were all locked down. Eventually, we came to realize that this was the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. My brother eventually reached my father and told of the chaos in Cleveland. I worked the rest of the day at the office and then spent the next week glued to the TV. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has been dramatically changed since 9/11. Honestly, I now live each day like it could be my last on earth. I am more wary, cautious, and afraid when I travel. I never gave much consideration to my personal security as an American citizen...especially with respect to the prospect of being a terrorist victim on American soil. Now I am constantly aware of the terrorism threat. I am extremely saddened that my children will probably not know a US that is free of terrorism threats...for example, they will not know what it is like to walk into a museum without a bag search and won't remember trips to Washington, DC in which the city is not ringed in security barriers and fencing. They were innocent pawns and sacrificed their lives for the sake of fanatic hatred of American ideals and democratic ways. We need to remember the victims faces and their stories. Yes, I have flown the American flag since 9/11. I took down my Cleveland Indians flag and replaced it with an American flag banner that has flown ever since. The principal made an announcement over the intercom. He said that a plane had crashed into one of the Trade Towers. We turned on the TV and watched in quiet disbelief. All throughout math class, we watched the horrible terrorism that had been going on that morning. I did not believe what I was seeing at first, but as we were shown more and more replays, it all seemed less like a dream. We were all givin a dose of the real world. What was going on outside of East Grand Rapids, Michigan. It hit us like a ton of bricks. Us, little 6th graders took it all in as well as we could. I would have to say that my life and that of my family ( my wife Joanne and daughters Kayla 11 and Hope 7) has changed a great deal we now bond more and are more understanding to the plight of those not as well off as we are in love and happiness. I'll remember the day as if it were yesterday even though it is a year on. My outlook on life has changed in such a way that the little things that used to upset me don't anymore as i have realised that no matter what my problem's are we will get through it. I'll never forget my daughters asking WHY did someone want to hurt all those people daddy? And the answer i feel will never be realised or answered.Although i am in australia i felt as though it was my own home and family were under threat from unseen forces. As im sure a lot of people around the world did. I'am sad but happy at the same time. sad because of the atrocity that has befallen America (and the world) but also happy because even in the face of such devistation the people of america and the world united to comfort, console and most of all support each other. I feel that what should be remembered first and formost is the lives that were lost. In a way they died for freedom and freedom is something that we forget untill we dont have it. wWe should also remember the people who gave there all to save people who they had never met. Compassion, warmth, giving, caring, love and above all solidarity. God bless all those who perished and those who helped in the never ending healing process.May we never forget the fallen but at the same time respect the life we have and the people we have to thank for our life and freedom. I am from McAllen Texas and on that sunny day I dropped off my daughter Mranda at school and my son Mikey at the daycare center and headed to work. I had no idea that anything had happened until one of my co-workers (Eddie Gomez) came in and said the words I will never forget as long as I live "The United States is under attack". We turnd on th T.V. and there it was, the firt tower had already been struck and we al stood aound in the lounge and watched in disbelief as we saw the second tower struck by a plane. We were all speechless. No one knew if it was real or somekind of mistake. I though "this can't happen to us", "not the United States of America". But it did and I will forever have he images etched in my mind. The first thing I did was call my husband Michael to see if he had seen what i had seen. He had, and our lives were changed forever. I was just shocked. At first I was like, 'ok, what does this have to do with me?' But then it all soaked in and I was completely shocked. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I live in Columbus, Ohio. I will always remember Tuesday, September, 11, 2001. At that time, I was an employee for the State Dept. of Rehab. and Corrections and my daughter Nedra was a part-time college student and employee for a major bank. Our car was in the shop, so we had to walk and take the bus to our jobs. I worked east and she worked far north. While we were riding the bus downtown I took notice and made mention to her how beautiful and clear the morning was. I also mentioned to her that I had a strange feeling that something bad was going to happen that day. So when we arrived in downtown Columbus and parted ways for our connecting busses, we hugged and kissed each other and I told her to be very careful. As I boarded my connecting bus, I could not shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen. I felt that this happennig was going to take place at my job because we had experienced the fire-bombing of our parole report center two years prior to this date. After getting off the bus and walking the rest of the way to work, I couldn't help looking up and seeing the perfectness of the sky and the day. About 8:40 am, a co-worker and I went outside for a smoke break and I told her of my fear of something bad happening. She laughed! On our way back to our desks we were called into a supervisors office and were informed that a "small" plane had just crashed into one of the WTC towers. We assesed pilot error and hoped that the fatalities were few. As we were leaving the supervisors office she screamed and said another plane had hit the second tower. We immediately shouted terrorist! By the time we got back to our desks, the whole office was a buzz. Needless to say, we got no work done for the rest of the day. As a matter of fact, Gov. Taft closed all state offices at 11:30 am. I have never been so shocked in all my life! I felt like crying but my anger took over instead. For a whole week I could not look at anyone who looked as if they were from the middle east(I soon got over that). My initial concern was for my family in New York and Washington; then for my daughter, mother and boyfriends safety within the city of Columbus. When I arrived at home and turned the T.V. on, I felt as if I were watching a movie! The whole day was so surreal. I hope this country never has to experience anything like this again. You know the old saying, "Wake up and smell the roses", well I am doing a lot of that these days. I am thanking God for each day and for the people who are in and out of my life. As a result of the bad economy of our country, I was laid-off from my job a few months after Sept. 11. However, I have been blessed with a new job and great co-workers. My daughter has transferred to a college in Brooklyn, N.Y. and is loving it. So I guess for me and my family, Sept 11 made a change for the better. We should pray for the families of the victims and make sure that our government is doing all they can do to compensate them before we go sending money to foreign lands. September 11 should also make us realize as a country, that even though we welcome all with open arms, that sometimes we should be careful about being to quick to unlatch the door.
