My mom told me to look at the tv and see what happened. We both thought it was a accident that something went wrong. But then the second tower was struck, our eyes were staring blankly at the t.v screen. I was frustrated and didnt know what to do, then the pentagon, our home defense were all the branches of the armed servies head quauters were based. Then i knew it was an attack. I couldnt believe that this happened on our land, America. News reporters were scared they didnt know what to say. Either did I. I first found out about the catastrophe when my mother picked my brother, my sister and I up after school from the bus stop. My mom was very sad and serious. She said she had to tell us something that would change America forever. Then she told us what happened and we went home and put the television on and continued watching the news developments throughout the evening. You never know when someone you love and care about will be taken from you. I have so much compassion for all those families who lost their loved ones. We must do all we can as united Americans to make sure that their lives were not taken in vain. We should hold them close to our hearts, as true American heroes. Also, I think people of all races and creeds should never forget that on September 11, 2001 we united as one people. Our country was brought together putting all prejudices aside. Yes, when I look at the American flag now I see things differently. I think of all those thousands of lives that were lost on that horrific day and it saddens my heart. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I will never forget the 11th of September 2001, for the rest of my life. I was a student at Wagner College in Staten Island NY. I had an 8:00 a.m class, Business Law I. Class was let out early and I had 30 minutes until my next class. I realized I had left my student ID card home at my grandparents house where I had been living at the time, only 2 miles from campus. Without it I couldn't go to lunch with my friend Melinda after my next class. I get into my car, turn on the radio and hear the song "I'm Real by Jlo and Ja-Rule" at the end of the song the DJ's from Z100 say, "something wierd is going on, i'm not really sure what is going on," he procedes to say that a plane has hit one of the world trade towers. I pulled up to my house ran inside to get the ID card and went back to my car to find out what was going on. If I ever needed information on the News I called my dad. He is a camera/sound engineer for WNBC in New York. The cell phones had no service, I could not call anyone. I walk into class, meet up with Melinda, and my teacher walks in and says, clases are cancelled go home, go to your dorms, go wherever you belong, call your parents and tell them you are ok. I did not know what to think, what in gods name was really going on. 2 planes had hit the trade towers? We're the pilots drunk? We're the computers messed up? And then I found out it was terrorism, terrorism doesnt happen in the USA it only happens in the middle east. Not here, not now, not never. One of the selling points of Wagner college, is the view, if you are standing in the right place you can see the whole city. I was up in Melinda's room, the TV wasnt working, so we had the radio on. I called my boyfriend, living in Washington DC, and told him I didnt think he should come and visit me that day as planned because I thought the bridges were closed. It still had not hit me what was really going on. Then my mom calls. The one person who can really calm me, threw me a curve ball. "Daddy is there, you know he is," she says. My dad is johnny on the spot, if there is a news story he is there in a second. And then it hit me, something is terribly wrong, this is not a joke we are being attacked. And as this all comes to me, I'm still talking to my mom, and I hear on the radio "OH MY GOD the building is falling" I turn around look out the window and sure enough, right in front of my eyes, it fell. The first building went down, and i vomited, many times. I knew my dad was there. My friends tried to calm me down, but it was no use. We went down to another dorm room to be with friends, to watch TV. They show a clip of a man with a camera running out of the building and the anchor man says "the Feed stopped because the building fell" I vomited again. How could I be sure that wasnt my dad? From that point on I never watched TV for the rest of the ordeal. I decided the best thing would be for me to go home in case my family needed to contact me. My grandparents were on a cruise, my aunts and uncles were in Chicago, my sister was at her first week of college in Connecticut, few more aunts and uncles were in New Jersey, and so was my mom. All the bridges were closed and no one could get to me. So I went home, alone, listened to the radio, and talked on the computer. NEVER turned on that TV. It was now about 12 noon, but god it seemed like weeks had passed since class that morning. I go down to St. Vincents hospital to give blood, i waited for three hours and was turned away, thats how many people came out ot help, on Staten Island alone. I went home, its now 3:00-ish still no word from my dad. My cell phone rings I pick it up and its my dad...he says "Boo (my nickname he gave me as a baby), I'm ok, i love you, and ill see you soon." And that was it. I cried forever after that. Relief he was ok. I soon found out he was a few blocks away. If you ever saw the NBC footage of the first tower falling, that was my dad's shot. He should have been alot closer, but him, his partner and the reporter stopped for a bagel. Indirectly, I knew of about 60+ people that were lost. A friend of my dad's from NBC, my aunt tracey's neighbor (father of 3, the youngest only 2 weeks old), my friends maid of honor to be in her upcoming wedding, a co-worker lost her sister in law, another co-worker lost 12 people including cousins and life long friends..all firemen. The Wagner College community lost 40 people. A high-school friend's father, and the list goes on. But I was lucky, I didnt lose anyone really close to me, related to me. Like I said I never watched TV, i just couldnt because I knew my dad was wherever the news was. I taped 4 hours of radio, saved about 15 newspapers between NJ NY and DC, and about 10 magazines. I attended the United We Stand concert in DC. Puff Daddy sang I'll be missing you and showed clips of the happenings on a big screen behind him, I sobbed endlessly, that had been the first time i'd seen it all since i saw it with my own eyes. The next couple days after the 11th were a blur, classes were cancelled until the following Monday. I went home on Thursday, when the bridges finally opened. I got home exhausted, fell asleep, only to be woken up by my dad. I cried and hugged him forever. My boyfriend made it up from DC on friday to be with me and my family. He was working right near the Pentagon on the 11th. September 11th lasted for years, that one day never ended, and it never ever will. Some people were afraid tofly afterwards, I however got on a plane 2 weeks later because my boyfriend's brother was getting married in Boston. 14 people were on my plane. My attitude is that I'm not letting some stupid morons ruin my life. I try so hard to forget that day, but I never will. My boyfriend thinks I am obsessed with that day in an unhealthy manner. For instance, right around fathers day of 2002, i said to him, "you know this is the first fathers day since 9-11" And i did that for every holiday, i constantly think about those families. Its just so horrible. Like i said i dont want some jerk running my life, making me scared, but i've noticed my high levels of anxiety ever since. I always wonder every time i leave someone i love if it will be the last time i see them. Thats not normal. I'm convinced something bad is going to happen to me, but i dont know when or where or how. But I dont let this show, most people think im fine, but I'm faking. I try to overcome it but it is very very hard. What if it happens again? Everyone was so kind and gentle, patient and sincere. I saw a fender bender on Forest Ave on Staten Island...any other "normal" day the amount of profanity that would have been going on is unmentionable. I was stuck in traffic with my windows down right next to the whole ordeal. The two men got out of their cars..one guy said I'm sorry, please I apologize, I just cant see straight anymore...and the other man said "dude just watch where your going, please...and god bless." THAT WAS IT Why cant people be so nice all the time. Also the patriotism. Everyone was "Proud to be an American" and it should ALWAYS be like that. Proud to be a New Yorker. Everyone came together, donated anything they had, blood, time, money, food, clothes, socks, gloves ANYTHING. It was amazing. Yes I do fly an American flag after 9-11, but my family always did. My grandparents have a flagpole on their front lawn, so the following morning, 24 hours later I rose the flag. My feelings toward the flag is that it now has meaning. When I was in grammer school and we had to say the pledge of allegiance it really didnt mean much. The flag was the flag, it came out on the 4th of July. But now It stands for something, its amazing. I'm a cheerleader at my college. and at our first football game after 9-11, they rose the flag as usual, they sang the star spangled banner as usual, but everyone cried and cheered louder and stood taller. That flag makes us all remember how strong we are, and how together as one we can overcome anything. We all sang god bless america with pride. The flag survived 9-11, and so could we. My grandmother woke me up saying "wake up alot has happened while you were sleeping" I didn't really think twice about about what she had just said I was too tired to think about anything by my daily routine for school. She turned on the TV and the very first image on the screen was one of the world trade center buildings with smokey shooting out of the side. I immediately woke up in shock. I didn't think for a second after a plane was mentioned that this was any ordinary accident. To me it was foul-play from the begining. How I will remember 9-11 and how I feel about it As I was sitting in my 1st block social studies with my teacher Mr. Heasley. It was a usually day in that class, I was in it with my friend Amber and we were talking and of course getting in to trouble and that when Mr. Wilson came in and told us all that there had been a terrorist attack on new your city. At first no on believed him and then he told us to turn on our T.V and we did at that very moment not one of us really new what to expect or knew the full gasp of what had happened!! We watched the news on it and saw the first building and the 2nd one get hit and blow up we also saw them fall in 2nd block in pre algebra thought by miss. Holt!! We were all sitting in the floor in her class sitting with the people we card about and we were all upset and blow away and still not yet sure what tot believe. WE were all just sitting there for the whole class period. I was sitting with Amber, Greg, Jessica and Sara we were all just kind of like whats going on and we were quit for the first time all year. Then as the day went on I begun to understand what was going on more and more and the sadder I got. On that day my out look against how protected we are changed for ever because if some one from another country can just walk in one of our airports and mange to get on and take over and kiss intents people that had done nothing rung but be on that plan which is sad and angered. It upsets me to know that all of those people died because of a couple of people and that all those children have to be raise with out one of there parents and that all those people that have lost a loved one and will never know what they had felt of there last words and for that matter even know where their body is to burry them! It also angers me to think that our government is supposed to be solo good but yet they let this happen an then all of a sudden tried to protect us after all this damage has already been done and there were just like well were going to take care of it and were sorry and thats all they could say. But we still have seen no man/woman brought in for this and they promise us that we would. I think that our govement let al of this happen and is doing nothing for payback And I think that they owe us and most of the people that lost some one. And I will always remember this sad day and always keep all the people that were hurt and those that lost some one in my preys. Then there was a knock on the door, the princapal asked him to step out side because she had something to tell him. At the time I didnt think anything of it. Until he came back into the room and said that the world trade center has just been hit. I had no idea what that was. So the first thing that came to my mind was the world is getting attcked. I was so scared I went and sat by one of my best friend and heled her hand, then we started crying because we didnt know what was happening. Mr. C turned on the T.V and all I saw was a bulding with a bunch of balck smoke coming out of it. Then to hear that it was hit with one of our own planes beacuase someone hijacked it was just devatating. Another thing that was running through my mind was did I know anyone on those planes or in those buldings. The next thing we saw was another palne going in to tower number 2. Seeing all the dabree falling and people faliing out of bulidings I was speachless. Then to see all people running away and covered in dust and screaming and crying. Why would anyone do this. It made me really sad. Its horable to think that, that many inisant people died because of cruel mean people that did this. Alot of people around me were so sad that day that in some classes we didnt do anything because they were in such shock. I didnt think that anything like this would happen when I was alive that all that stuff only happened in the past. To this day I am really sad that this happened. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. The first thing I do in the morning after waking is shower. Part of my shower routine is to listen the NPR. Listening to the radio with water runs tends to distort what the commentary is. On the morning of September 11 I could hear them talking about the World Trade Center. The report was discussing shock and tragedy. I thought that they were talking about the bombing that had happened there a few years earlier. I started thinking about if it could be the anniversary date but was certain it hadn't happened in September. Shutting off the water the true story hit me. As I wake at 6:30 am the first plane attack had happened just before I awoke. The shock of the tragety hit me hard. I had just returned from a trip to Boston the night before. My return was supposed to be on the 9th, but there were weather problems at my connecting flight in Detroit. As a result I didn't return to Oregon until late in the afternoon on the 10th. The morning of the 11th left many of my friends and coworkers panicked, none of them knew if I had made it home. They also didn't know if I had been on one of the Boston planes. Many things changed for me that day. Somehow work didn't seem quite as important as it had. Instead, spending time with my friends and family had more clout. My life may have changed over the past year, but I think it was for the better. I am so grateful that I left Boston when I did. I witnessed the tragic events of september 11 in school in my third period reading class when we heard the terrible news and our teacher quickly turned on the T.V to find that one of the world trade centers had been struck by a flying aircraft. As we were watching in amazment we saw a another plane out of the coner of the T.V and then A few seconds later it hit the tower. As we all watched what was happening not so far away from us we saw the Trade Center start to crumble and fall. Not so long after that the other tower had colasped. Yes, my life has changed a whole lot. I am more thankful for the things I have and I am more thankful that i have my parents to love me. I think the firefighters were the ones who should be remembered since they risked their lives for the people in that building. Some of them even died for them. if we did'nt have the firefighters here many more lives would have been lost. That's why i think the firefighters should be remembered the most. I asked the teacher if i could go to the office to go call my mom. I could tell that something was wrong when i was taking to her. As i sat waiting in the office for her to come get me i was thinking of everything that could have been wrong. When she arrived I heard her and the lady in the office saying something about how horrible "it" was. I didnt know what "it" was yet. When i got in the car I asked my mom what was going on. She told me that something was happening in America tht was horrible. I wanted to know soo bad what it was. She explained to me that 1 of the twin towers had been hit by an airplane. I thought maybe it was an but it couldnt be an . As i was sitting in the docters office listening to the radio, they said ANOTHER plane had hit the second twin tower had been hit. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was getting ready for work, when I got out of the shower I saw the live coverage on the news. The images of the burning buildings after the planes had just crashed into them. I was in shock. I cried the whole way to work, while I listened the radio and they told us what was going on as it was happening, when the first tower fell, then the second. All I could think of was all the people that were being killed. I was afraid for the rest of the day, not knowing what was going to happen, how many more attacks were planned and where. It scared me that they were able to hit the pentegon, you think of it as such a secure place, then terrorists are attacking it. I wanted to crawl back to my safe little house in the country, away from all the terror. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, I feel a little less safe. But I also know that God is working his plan in the world. I have faith that he is in control and everything will be ok. I also feel more patriotic. I know it is awful that it took such a tragedy for me, and lot's of other people, to appreciate America. It has brought a lot of people together. I remember the following Friday was the national day of mourning. I of course had to work, and as I was leaving work and heading to a near by store, there were people standing on the side of the road and outside their businesses lighing candles and holding flags. It moved me so much I starting crying. When I pulled into the store parking lot and got out of the car, the man getting into the car next to me asked me if I was ok, I said yes I was just sad, he then walked over and gave me a hug and said "Don't worry, hopefully this will bring us all closer together." It made me realize that this tragedy really somehow was bringing us all closer, a total stranger knew and could relate to exactly what I was feeling without me even telling him. Woke up, ate breakfast, brushed my teeth, you know like every other day. Around 8:30 AM we were in 1st hour, Social Studies when our secretary walked in the room and whispered something to our teacher. Then he turned on the TV explaining what had happened. It was quite the shocking thing to learn about only a few days into the school-year. In my next class, band, my teacher just turned the radio on and left us to do whatever. This was probably the best thing for all of us. It was nice being able to take in the news and reflect without worrying about anything else. I was sitting at work in a small coastal town in North Carolina with my friend and suddenly we heard on the radio "whoa, a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center" and for hours after that it continued. "Another plane." And "smoke from the Pentagon, or maybe the White House". "Noone is sure what is happening" My friend was in the Marine Reserves. Is this "Armageddon"? My husband meanwhile had been surfing in the ocean and calls me asking, "what the heck is going on??" and how can I answer? All I can think about is the picture I took 10 years ago on my parents 110 camera of two towers that were so tall they almost TOUCHED each other when you looked from the ground up. How do you tell someone that those towers and all the tourists and workers and cleaners and bankers and breathing beings are just gone...and all you have is that picture of the blue sky and towers that stunned a 10 year old amateur photographer into believing in something greater. I remember being totally shell-shocked and not feeling remorse until a few days later. Then it hit me in one full blast. I was overcome with sadness and and a very an unbreakable sense of patriotism. I live in a small farming community surrounded by college towns in western Massachusetts. A mountain range separates my home from Westover Air Force Base. I am 38 years old and have a seven year old boy and a 4 month old son. I work for the state government overseeing the cleanup of hazardous waste sites. I was at work when I learned of the first plane hitting the world trade center. I was walking down the hallway and a co-worker was walking toward me. From the distance, I just knew something was wrong. As he got closer he said nothing and was about to pass me when I said Whats wrong? He wasnt crying or giving any outward sign of a problem, but when a tragedy like this occurs, I think that one must give off some sort of energy that others perceive on a less than visible level. He told me what he knew and I proceeded to where others had gathered in front of a television. It wasnt clear at that time that the crash wasnt an accident. I then witnessed, like millions of others, the second plane crashing, and with it my feeling of safety. As I watched at work I saw a view of a bridge in New York near the WTC and it awoke a memory of seeing that bridge from my mother-in-laws apartment. I immediately left to go call her there was no answer. I called my husband and his brother to see if they had heard from her but they hadnt. It wasnt until after lunch that day, much to my relief, that we found out she had been exercising and swimming oblivious to chaos happening not far from her building. As the threat to government agencies was unknown, my building was evacuated and I went home. I struggled with the idea of picking my son up from kindergarten, but left him there after calling and being assured the children knew nothing and parents would be in charge of how and how much to inform their children. I knew I wouldnt be able to watch or listen to the news with him home. At home, alone, I watched on television as news of the Pentagon attack occurred and the news that another plane was headed for the White House. I kept expecting news of an attack on the west coast (a plot to bomb the LA airport had recently been foiled), but it never came. They stopped all air travel. The skies were quiet for days, with the exception of military planes. The sound of planes in the sky gave me pause for quite awhile. In the days following 9/11, I struggled for a way to show my grief and solidarity with the people of our country. I placed a flag in my car, I called those I love and even attended a peace vigil. The songs I sang there stayed in my head for months and still give me comfort. After a couple of days, I called my cousin who lives on the western end of Long Island, near New York City. He has three children in elementary school. I wanted to know how they had been affected and what he had shared with them, as I struggled with what information to give my kindergartener. His children could not have recess any more because of the smoke. Twenty-three kids from that school lost at least one parent. The view from his daughters classroom had been the World Trade Center and now it was gone. He did not have the luxury of insulating his children from the tragedy because they experienced directly. I felt and continue to feel grateful for not having lost anyone with whom I was close that day. In the time since the attack I have improved my attitude toward life. I am now much better able to be happy and grateful for every day I have. I became pregnant and had a second child since September 11, 2001. It is a very different world in which I brought him than with my first. Thank you for the opportunity to reflect on my experience. I was in school in social studies when our principal told all the teachers to turn the tv on to the national news. When I saw the pictures in the screen I wondered if a plane was going to crash in my town. I was very afraid, mad, and taken aback at the sights I saw. We were supposed to study world religion but instead we were watching the events on the t.v. That night I was supposed to have football practice but did not because of what happened. Yes, I think my life has changed a lot because of September 11th. Ever since this event I don't think I have ever had a flag flying, but we do now. I think that we should remember when the events took place, how many people died, and remember who helped Osama bin Laden in his acts of hate. Ever since the September 11th attacks, I have flown an American flag every day. My feelings have really changed about the flag, the pledge of alligiance, and the National Anthem.
