My nephew is in the army and I imediatedly called him and then my sister. All the lines were blocked to the arny base. I cried... I still cry. As a compay, we watched the next plane crash into the second tower. We held hands and said a prayer. My nephew called later that night to say everything was alright and every one was on stand by. The Army told all of the men to call their families and tell them they were ok and to tell them they loved them. I will nevedr forget that day and the feeling of hoplessness. ALl the teachers were watching it on tv. at first i thought they were just reviewing a movie that he was gonna show to the class. Then i went on and the other teachers were watching like the news channels and i got curious and i stood there watching for a min or two...and after i found out that the plane had crashed into one of the towers i was shocked...and i had to go to my first and luckyly my first was world history. so we watched it throughout the whold period. It didnt effect me that much, but i get dreams that i was one of the innocent peoples that were in the twin towers. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11th was to be the beginning of a lifelong dreamed experience. I was finishing my first travel nurse position in an ER in Littleton, Colorado. I was to leave Littleton for NYC with a friend who was from Buffalo. She was going to help me drive cross country on my way to my first real "travel" job in Lewiston, Maine. My car was packed and I was ready to set out and see the big city and all the sites in between. Shift change was at 7am (9am NYC time). A day shift nurse came in and told us all that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. For some reason we assumed a Cessna type plane, never imagining an actual airliner. We reported off on our patients. I said my goodbyes. At the last minute I said, "I think I'll go in the lobby and look and see if the news is showing the plane crash." I was shocked at the horror of the first tower ablaze. Oblivious to the commentator's reporting I returned to the nurses station to tell the nurses to come and look at what had happened. When we returned to the ER lobby the commentator was discussing the possibility of a terroist attack. I stood in shock and awe at the thought of all those people trapped and dead. At the same time thinking of the nightmare the local ER's would soon be facing. I was to meet a good friend for breakfast to say bye and then hit the road to NY. All I knew was that if hell was going to break loose I didn't want to get caught away from home. Immediatly I was on the phone trying to reach family. My parents back in Amarillo, Texas, my sister and here husband at Camp Pendleton, California. I was driving on I-225 in Denver frantically trying to reach my parents at work only reaching voice mail, and only getting my sisters answering machine in California. Suddenly traffic was at a stand still with the normal 8 am commuter traffic jam. I sat idoly in my car listening the KYGO. I never felt more alone in my whole life, stranded on a busy highway, no family and an uncertain future. Now the Pentagon was hit. I sat alone crying in my car on the highway surrounded by thousands who were just as alone. I looked to my left and a woman sobbed on her cell phone. I looked to my right and a man sat calmly shaking his head, obviously hearing the same news. I finally made it to the cafe where I was to meet my friend. I rushed to tell her the news and that we must get to a TV. She had managed to miss all the action as she sat in the cafe sipping her cappachino. I spent the afternoon at my friends apartment watching the events of the day unfold like some sick Hollywood action movie that let the hero die instead of saving the day. The images soon became to much to watch. I finally spoke with my family. My mother begged for me to come home to Texas. My sister asked me not to go to the East coast at all. Instead, me and my friend Dawn, contacted the Red Cross and added our names to the list of volunteers who were available to go to NY. Sadly, the ER's weren't overwhelmed with mass droves of patients. I left a week later, by myself, for Maine, stopping at Liberty State Park on the Jersey shore. The smoke was still visible on the famous skyline. I said my prayers for those lost. I whelled up with American pride as I drove under a massive American Flag on the George Washington bridge. I went visited ground zero on December 17,2001 a day I will never forget. The sites, the sounds, the faces, and the smell of the financial district. All forever burned into my brain so that I WILL NEVER FORGET. I am truely lucky to have been born in such a great nation. My opportunities are limitless. Great men and women gave their lives living the American Dream. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My parents were out of town and went to a "spontanious" vacation to New York. School was in session so I was sleeping over at a friends house for a week. It was a day that school didn't start until 9:45 so I was hoping to catch up on some sleep. I awoke that day to the news blaring in the other room but muffled from my friends bedroom door. I woke up and I said "what's goin' on?" my friends mom looked at me, her face was red and puffy, she had a crumpled tissue in her hand, and she grimly looked to me and said "a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center". My jaw dropped, my response was "on purpose?". She said "we don't know yet, but they suspect it's a terrorist attack." Who could do such a terrible thing? Right then she said "OH MY GOD!". I immediatly asked "what is it?!" and she replied "another plane has crashed into the other tower". This is impossible, I thought. I wasn't even sure what the trade centers were then. I thinking "who would want to crash into some stock place?". You could see people with masks everywhere. Huge clouds of dust surrounded this tragic event. The news showed people jumping off the buildings. I can remember very vividly that photo that we all know so well of two towers with smoke billowing from their sides. One thought came into my mind. I recall seeing lines that went for blocks long of people trying to give their blood. I became a lot more grateful for my parents (they both survived, I got a call during the school day from my mother saying everything was OK). Everyone has been effected by this. They either new someone in the towers, near the towers, or sent off to war. I remember seeing the firefighters try to run in and save more and more people risking their owns lives. I greatly respect those men and women. There's niceness in everyone, it's just a shame that we have to have something like this happen to discover it. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everyone needs to know that people in that weren't all just business men and straight forward. Many of them had families. You can sit and watch the documentaries and they have some phone conversations that say how much the families loved each other, and there is a great rage in anyone who has heard that. Who could tear people away from their small children? Also, I was watching the news some time later, and I remember that there was a Day Care center in the World Trade Centers. The interviewees said that one of them grabbed a shopping cart and was just piling screaming infants and toddlers in there. They told anyone that can walk well enough to run, and don't worry if you fall over because someone will pick them up. They interviewed a four-year-old. She said "We got to go outside and play. And then there was a big noise, and we heard people yelling and sirens go by and then... we... weren't allowed to play" NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? It's always seemed to me a sign of great pride and feeling. I had walked down my street that day, and every single house had an American flag from it. When we turned the t.v's on in the cafateria they showed the wreck and the fire fighters pulling people out of which was the twin towers. I didn't believe it at first because it just didn't seem logical. But when I saw the news 6th period, it hit me. When I got home I watched the news again with my mom. Later in the month, my Uncle Bob brought pictures to my house. He was working across the river when the attacks happened. Most of the pictures were of ground zero. I don't take things that people do for me for granted anymore. I realized that death can happen to you at any moment in time even though some people would like to believe that life will end when we're ready for it to. I think that the fact that September 11th made Americans boast our pride of being american even more should be remembered. About 20 miles from Washington D.C., working in Sponsored Research at George Mason University. I was currently working with a faculty member trying to get a grant done and in on time, when my phone rang, it was my husband. "The World Trade Center had been hit by a plane he had it on the news in his office if I wanted to come by". I was shocked by this event, but still the faculty member and I worked on her grant. Then a co-worker came into my area. Another plane had hit the World Trade Center and a third had hit the Pentigon. "Oh my God" we all just sat there and cryed. Was there more? What was going to happen next? Then came the report that there was a fourth plane missing.................. I have a very dear friend and co-worker that has a son who was a capital police officer on duty in the Capital Building that morning. She kept trying to call her husband and daughter in-law to find out if he was ok. And then the phone rang again "Did you hear that the Capital Building has been bombed". My heart stopped how can I give my friend this news. Her and I sobbed down the hall and through two door to find reports on the local news showing the Capital building on fire. It was almost 20 minutes before the news reported that they were mistaken that the capital building had not been bombed, from downtown the smoke from the Pentigon behind the capital made it appear to be on fire. Unlike most on the country we did not close down, we did as the President said we continued work as usual. However It was not as usual. Women with children and husbands in the DC area waited for phone calls that they had made it out of D.C. One women thought her husband was in Crystal City only to find out he had had a meeting in the Pentagon. "He was safe, Thank God". And finally we realized that the grants that we had been working on were going absolutely no where. We were all changed that day by a horrific event that ravaged are neighboring city, and changed the lives of many people who worked in the pentigon. I just recently visited the crash site of flight 93, and I will always remember and believe that those brave souls save the life of the son of my friend Jean and saved our beautiful Nations Capital and the lives of many more innocent people. Or who had love ones die because of it. I live very close to Dullas Airport. I used to whatch the planes with fasination. Yes, we must remember. We proved that we are strong, and compassionate and that above all else Americans are good people. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11th I was at school that morning when I heard the devastating news. It started out as a fine morning but then in second hour it totally changed. We were almost done with class but had a good 20 minutes left to get some things accomplished. I remember there being a knock at the door and no one knew who it was. Our teacher slipped out into the hallway with the person that we didn't know and when Mr. Macki came back in he didnt have his usual look on his face. The principle had just talked to him. He is usually always smiling and crackin jokes but Mr. Macki wasn't himself when he came back into the room. He came back from the hallway w/ out saying a word and switched on the tv to the CNN Headline news Channel. No one really had any idea of what he was doing or what was going on but we all knew that something was up and it couldn't have been all that great. We all just sat in silence and watched the tv to see what was happening. After watching it for a few minutes with pure silence discussion started to rise among us students to see if anyone else could understand what was going on. Mr. Macki then explained as much as he was able to of what he was aware of what was going on. When we went to our next hour whih was english she explained a lot more things in detail and we all were beginning to understand what happened. Throughout the day tvs were on in every room that you walked by. It was like an all around news coverage. The rest of that day we watched the tv in every class and didtn't do anything as far as school work goes. Everyone was very tuned in to the tvs to see what new information was developing. This went on for a few days and then things started to go back into the regular school routine of the day. At home I learned more details from my parents and the tvs continued to be on as they uncovered more information on this devastating attack on america. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has not changed dramatically since September 11th but it has had an affect on everyone. I started to have more thoughts about the news and kind of what was going on in our world. No one that I knew personally died in the attacks but everyone feels the devastation of everyone that did loose a loved one that day. Also since security was very tight and everyone was a little up tight about flying we didn't decide to go on a family trip this year since everyone was a little concerned about that. Otherwise I just really took into consideration all the lives that were lost that day. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think all the volunteers and everyone that had a part in these attacks should surely be remembered. Also how our country just came together as a whole and really came a lot closer. We just need to remember how strong our country is and how we just didn't give up when another country attacked us. We held in there strong and stood up for our country. I think that was very important how we all tried so hard after such a devaststing time so keep our country going even though it was such a hard and difficult time for many many people. We haven't flown an american flag personally at our house but my mom has definitely been more in a patriotic mood and has boughten some patriotic things for our home and many different things. I think that since September 11th we should take into consideration a little bit more of what the American flag really means to us and should show our patriotism by flying them in our yards and that would really show how strong and involved our country is and how well we appreciate our country. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I landed in Bermuda on September 10 to begin what was to be two weeks of "mystery shopping" hotels. On the morning of September 11, I was in a gift shop when another guest came in and spoke about the news. Due to my workload, but more because I wasn't "home," I was unable to feel much except shock from seeing the pictures of WTC continually punctuate newscasts by Dan Rather. It was only on a plane over a year later that I was able to come to terms with the whole episode. Through several changes of seats, I ended up next to a survivor of the WTC and a survivor of the Pentagon. I asked each man to tell me his story in as complete honesty as they could. THEN I was able to feel the level of horror, pain, and shock that everyone else had over a year earlier. I thank those two men for telling me their stories. I travel a great deal for my work, so airport security has changed considerably, and this has affected me. I don't care about taking off my shoes or submitting my purse for examination; in fact, I welcome the fact that security has tightened up somewhat. Who did it, who was involved, why it happened (lax intelligence as well as poor security at all entrances to the country. My feelings about the freedoms represented by the American flag have only intensified. I feel very fortunate to be able to say that September 11th has not directly changed my life in any tragic way. The events that took place, however, did have a significant impact on me and changed me in some way from that day forward. Those tragic events proved to me how life the freedoms that come along with it should not be taken for granted. My interest in world affairs and this country's relationship with others has increased significantly. On that day, this country was very susceptible to attack. It makes me wonder if such an extreme tragedy was necessary. My life was certainly altered on that day, and, in some way, I think most others were too. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that first and foremost the innocent lives lost should be remembered above all. I think people should remember that it could have been them or someone they loved in one of those buildings. Secondly, I think we should remember how open we were to attack and learn never to put ourselves in that position again. Finally, I think all people should remember that with all the good in the world there will always be "evil" wanting to take it all away. Hi my name is brian.it was 8:30am when i was crossing the manhattan bridge on the W train.just another day of work when i reached my destination uptown at 86th and lexington i knew something was wrong people where standing in the middle of the street looking towards lower manhattan..i can see smoke rising in the air i thought it was a small plane out of control hit the tower...as i went to my job sight and my co-workers was huddled around the radio.......then i was told another plane hit the other tower........ i knew something was terribly wrong....soon after that the first tower fell..i had to try to help so i left my job sight and tried to get down town but it was havock in the streets people were crying phones werent working...... I couldnt believe what i am seeing..it took two hours to get from 86th street to 14th street..as i got to canal street i was stoped my nypd officers i couldnt get any closer.....i wanted to help i was in shock... i couldnt believe what i was seeing....i was born in brooklyn and raised there all my life (34 years).i love my city..i used to work on the roof of the observation deck two years before this all i kept thinking was if i was still working on the observation its possible i would not be here right now...tears came down my face and chills were going through my body...i was angry that this happened also wondering if any of the people i used to work there with were all right to this day i dont know if they were in the tower..all i wanted to do was go to the towers and help....so as i relized i couldnt get close i should try to get home to my family...i walked over the manhattan bridge it was a very hot day and when i got to the brooklyn side there ,by this time it was 2:pm..there hundreds of people giving out water runing up to us and giving water juice whatever we needed thats when i broke down in tears.feeling the love from all those people...i would like to thank those peolple that helped us when we got over the bridge...Thank You.....i made it home around 4pm....... I am Sergeant with NYC Health Department Police unit, I just left my son 30 minutes earlier (8:05) at his new school in kew gardens Queens, from there I proceeded to patrol the sites I supervise and prepared to enter a meeting at 125 worth street for 9:00 am. I was going into manhattan through the BQE, I saw a sizeable amount of traffic, I was concerned I be late for my meeting, I look to my right there was tower one smoking, I called my chief of department to see what was going on , he replied a cessna flew into the world trade one, I said okay and montior radio traffic to see what was going on. I am hearing eyewitness accounts on 1010 WINS about the problem, I figure let me get off the highway, but I couldnt, I approached greenpoint avenue exit and saw emergency vehicles heading into midtown tunnel proceeding to manhattan. I thought to myself there's my brothers in red and blue doing what they do best, I hesitated to go with them figuring they could handle the job. I took the sidestreets of brooklyn to get to the Manhattan bridge, I am still listening to the radio" ....oh my god another one hit the twin towers" was screamed across the radio..I knew then it was a terrorist attack , I proceeded to contact my Chief again but the cell phone went dead, at this point I was flooring the gas to get downtown, traffic was hell, people was standing outside thier cars looking at the carnage, Health Department has a medical station at flatbush extension in Ft.Green brooklyn, I proceeded there. I arrived at 0915 hours, citywide call for first responderfs went out, first responders couldnt get through, I grab 2 officers from that medical station, and some health department civilian personell, we set up a incident command center for the Health Department at Ft.Green, and then proceeded to untangle the mess of traffic on flatbush avenue feeding from Atlantic avenue, we shut down the left lanes on opposites sides of the avenue to allow responders through, and diverted traffic away from the area.. to this day I regret doing that, I was able to get 3 engines and 2 ladders through, One of which was the ill fated engine pictured in the daily news crossing the brooklyn bridge. At 1000 hours I recieved help from NYPD recruits, that help allowed me to get repsonders and thier personal vehicles through. One of my officers said Sarge they are in need of medical supplies, I ordered civilians and 3 responding Health Police officers to empty the clinics of thier medical supplies and load it into my pickup truck, a redcross voulnteer appeared from nowhere and ask if he could assist, No problem I said , this whole time I had my back turned to Manhattan and I turned around and saw clouds of dust, people started yelling the buildings are collapsing," radio traffic ..my deputy chief screaming to one of our detective to run to chambers street" ... about this time truck was fully loaded, and we proceeded to 125 worth street and foley square park where a triage area was set up. The journey was slow everyone was runnning out the city and crossing over the Manhattan bridge, I arrived at 1100 hours the scene was incredible ghosts walking through the canyon of hereos'..these were people covered in white dust, Red cross voulnteer was still with me after we drop off supplies, there was a major need for water, we retrieve 60 30 gallaon water bottles from health department offices at 2 lafayette street. We proceeded back to brooklyn where I was to meet other health police officers reporting for duty, I got back to flatbush extension, and responding NYFD firefighters were walking from Atlantic avenue and requested a drop into ground zero, I made 5 trips that afternoon. Red Cross still by my side help me answer a call for orange juice ( go figure). We went to northern boulevard in Queens to get fuel for our police vehicles, since all gas stations used by the city in brooklyn was out of gas. Red Cross saw a Western Beef Store across from the Merit Gas Station on Northern Boulevard, He said " I'll be right back" . As I top the tank off, he says I have a suprise for you, Western beef donated 300 half gallon containers of Orange juice, Lights and Sirens we loaded it up and got it downtown to the three triage areas that was set up at Pace, Foley square and 125 worth street, with that Red Cross disappeared and went to the Hot zone to retireve bodies. That night 20 health police officers, NYS court officers , and NYC police and myself secure the perimeters of lower manhattan, till this day I still see the yellow haze and feel the choking dust in my lungs, oh yeah I was given a souvenier "WTC Cough", 1 year later I still have it. When I first had an idea about what was going on, some high school girls were telling me that the world was going to end. Obviously an exaggeration, yet in some people's eyes that was really what was happening. When I first HEARD about it I was in my fifth period class and our teacher told us the news, though I had no idea it was as bad as it was in reality. When even a hint is dropped that something bad might happen at an open area with a large amount of people, the thought of going frightens me and I think twice about going. Before it was like "We're America... Nothing will stop us!" But now, with 9/11, it has shown that something could have stopped us, and tried to. I think that one of the main things would be the heroes, dead and alive, which would really be everyone. Anybody who was innocdently killed is a hero because they died for America. Blessed are those who gave their lives trying to rescue others. Blessed are all of them, and they will always be rememberd. Because in all reality, we never LOSE anyone or anything, they just eventually go away. We can hold them forever just as we can hold the moonlight in our hands. But while they were here, if those people touched your heart or your lives, then they really are still here. Their spirit is alive in you. The newspaper had a spread of the American flag that you can tape to your window in honor of all the heroes. My family and I did put that up and it's still hanging there now. My feelings for the flag have not CHANGED, just gotten stronger. Now when I look at it, I don't just think that I am an American, but I am proud to SAY that I am an American. Because everyone who lives here in the USA is different and unique in their own special way, but there is one thing we will ALWAYS have in common... the bravery and boldness of the red, white, and blue. When my mom and I was heading for school we were listening to the radio and it was saying that a plane crashed into the The World Trade Center. I didn't know what was going on but when we arrived at school I got out of the car and all my friends were talking about what was happening. We all had to go to your first class so when I got there the tv was on and it was showing everything blowing up. People running for help, people screaming, firefighters coming, police, and lots of horrible things. I felt really bad for all those people that died in that. I also thought that it was really cool that all those firefighters and police risked their lives to save all those people that were in the World Trade Center at the time that it went crashing down. I don't have any one that died from that and I know that I live far away from New York. I now have alittle bit more feelings for America. I think we need to remember is all those people that fought and helped when the terrroist attacked. Like the policeman and firefighters. We also need to remember those people that died while it was happening, and all those people that lost a loved one. It would be really hard for them.
