NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11 was the slowest day of my life. My school was quiet about the "incident" but they couldn't tbe for long. I live about 10 miles from Baksdale Air force Base. I go to school less that 5 away and that is where President Bush decided he should address the country from. It is on of the safest military bases in the nation. I went to the bathroom and called my mom. I told her to call the school and to check me out so that I could go home because I wanted to see what was really going. My mom did as I asked and I went home. Within minutes I was in my back yard watching Air Force one Flying over my home. I got a calls from alot of younger people at school whos mom told them they could leave school, but they needed a ride. I drive a very small car. I made 16 trips that day and people came to my home on their own. Before it was all over I had 96 people in my house watching and waiting for the new anchors to say that everything was ok. We waited there for what seemed like ever. There were people stacked into every room of my 5 bedroom home. I asked my mom to get food for people on the way home. She didn't relize how many. I have never seen such an outpouring of love. I am one of those people who doesn't really fall into the typical High school catagory because I don't just have on group of friends. It was amazing to sit in own home and see the Head-cheerleader comfort the goth, or the biggest nerd in school comfort the school jock. My school is just a small example of what our country did. We put our diffrences aside and helped each other. I am glad that my home was a part of the bonding that happend on 9-11. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed in the fact that I am scared of what everyday might hold. I was just taking a test while over 5,00 lives were taken. I was just walking to my next class when I found out. I relize now that there are 365 days and there is the possibility that any of them can hold a tragedy. On September 11, I rode my bike to school and I was going through my regular routine when I heard about what had happened. At first I was thinking that my friends were kiding around with me, but I later figured out that day that it was all over the news and the radio. I could not believe that two towers, that were in part a representation of the U.S. had fallen that mourning. I was in even more shock when I saw people crying in the hallways of the school because they thought that their loved ones had fallen with the two towers. I was in grief as the rest of the country. I dont think that it really hit me until I got home that day and all we were watching was the reruns of the airplane crashing into the side of the World Trade Center. That night, I talked to my family about the whole ordeal because at that point I still had a lot of questions racing through my mind, such as "Who had the evilness to commit this horrifying act of terrorism?", and "Were going to war when we found out who did it?". Also that night, I loved and apreciated my family more than any other day because I could not even imagine how life would be without them. I now apreciate life in general more and I live life to the fullest because you never know when it is going to end. I have also noticed that my community is a little bit more together as a result of September 11th. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the most important thing that should be remembered about that tragic day is the people who died in the Towers and the Pentagon. These people were going through their regular day , and then out of nowhere, there life was just taken away from them. These innocent people should be remembered more than anything else. I did not fly an American flag after the events of the september 11th because I could not spare the money to actually buy one even though they are so cheap. I also did not buy it because I thought that it was pretty stupid because it took a tragic event like this in order to get people to raise their flags high, but there were already people rasing their flags before The tragic day. I know that I am not sounding like a true American or anything, but I just feel like we should have been closer as country at that point and that we should have been awake instead of asleep for this type of even to happen. This even has opened our eyes to a lot of things that have been going on for a while now and it is unfortunate that it takes many thousands of innocent people to die in order for us to see these things. Then my dad told me that the world trade center got hit by an airplane. i was very shocked about it. As we were watching we saw another plane hit the other tower. That was a vert scary site to see. As I was leaving for school, he then told me that the first tower that got hit had fallen down. I didn't know what to think. I think that the whole thing should be remembered. It was cruel and just wrong, but maybe in same sick way we deserved it. The one thing that should be remembered most though, is that everyone unified together afterwards. Our country became closer than it ever has been before. Our whole community rallyed together and waved the flag. All the cars were honking, it was just crazy. The flag has been hanging in front of my house ever since. The tv was on and i walked in thinking we would watch a movie.... turns out i saw huge building, which i later found out were the trade towers, that had huge smokes coming out of it, people yelling, running, and going crazy. About 5minutes later class started and our School District informed all the teachers that the students will not watch the news for what happened. My two teachers for 8th grade thought we were old enough, so we watched the news for the whole daying seeing that day exactly aftered it happened. My life and thousands of other's has changed because we have learned that United States are not invisincible. We got messy and started to ignore the fact that we do need security more and more, we can get bombed like others in Israel, we can die from explosives in a single second. I remeber when i first saw the planes fly into the towers. i was in 7th grade. i had just walked into my social studies class. CNN was on. i see the plane fly into one of the towers. i thought what is the big deal planes crash almost everyday. Then i saw the other plane hit the tower and though something was not right. when the reporter came on he sad that the planes were highjacked by terroist. when i heard that my heart droped. The first thing i thought about was war.i was afrid for my uncles who are in the army and my cousin who is in the navy.Then i looked back at the T.V. to see the tower fall. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I work in Newark, NJ and work on the 8th floor of our building, with a perfect view of the city. That morning was so clear, the sky was just an amazing blue and there was no haze which you can normally see hanging over the city. Everyone who works in this city had a birds eye view that day. I came to work at about 7:30 in the morning, and the guy who sits next to me, Eddie, told me a short time later that there was a bad fire in one of the towers, I said "are you kidding me?" and he said "no, go look out the window". Well, needless to say when I walked to the window the first words out of my mouth were "oh my god, you're not kidding!" For some unknown reason I went to out equipment closet and got out the digital camera and started to take pictures, something I would never normally do. At first we thought it was just a fire, then we heard on the radio that a plane had crashed into the tower, I remember thinking to myself how could a plane crash into the tower on such a clear day? And then we watched the second plane crash into the second tower, and we all knew someone was trying to do it on purpose. Everyone was stacked up against the window watching it happen, it was horrible to see, it had a surreal quality to it as there was no sound through the thick glass window, it was like watching a silent horror movie. We could see everything. Some people here were crying and a few were close to losing it. Eddies brother in law worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, and once he realized that people were trapped above were the planes crashed and couldnt get out, he started to break down, he basically witnessed the death of his brother in law but didnt realize it at the time. Then the unthinkable happened, the first tower went down, someone here had turned the radio on to hear what was happening, and when the tower went down the DJ went silent and we could here the horrible sound through the radio while we watched it, people were crying and running around, we just could not believe what had just happened, your mind just could not comprehend it. We all realized then that the second tower might come down, and when it did, everyone started to leave the office for home, it was just too much to take. I tried to get on the train at Penn Station Newark, but right before the train arrived they cancelled all train service for fear of something else happening, everyone was stranded. I happened to walk pass a customer service representative from the railroad and asked him how I could get back home on a bus as they were running, and by chance the next bus leaving was heading down to an area close to my home. What should normally take 10 minutes to go from Penn Station Newark to the NJ Turnpike took over 1-1/2 hours due to the traffic jams. People were actually walking along the highway towards Newark coming from the direction of the city, but to this day I dont know why or where they were coming from. When the bus finally got out to the Turnpike we were probably no more that a mile or so in a straight line from the city, and the cloud of smoke was still unbelievable, some people on the bus had not seen anything from their offices and didnt really have a grasp on what happened, but when we got onto the Turnpike and they could see, they were saying oh my god, oh my god! The smoke still seemed to cover the whole city. I went home and turned on the TV, and watched everything happen up close and personal all over again. It is without a doubt the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed. But I went to work the next day, what happened didnt make me fear, it made me white hot angry, and it will never change the way I live....in Freedom. I was at home in Morro Bay, CA getting ready for work at a warehouse, I was watching the news and saw the first plane hit I thought at first that it was some kind of old story that they were showing then I saw the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen and heard them say that the plane had just hit, I just could not believe what I was seeing I emmediately yelled at my wife to come out of the bedroom to see the news when the second plane hit, all I can remember was the flood of emotions, Fear, Rage, Sorrow, I can't explain better then that, I did not want to go to work that day, but I did, we really did not get much work done that day, we all had radios on all day, our supervisors threatened to take the radios away, my coworkers and myself agreed that if they took the radios away we were going to walk out that day. All I remember from the rest of that day was just feeling sick about what happened, and then hearing the very sad stories of people looking for their loved ones. I have always been aware of my surroundings, I was just brought up that way, but I think that I pay a little more attention to what is going on around me, and I am trying to destress my life, and enjoy the short time we have in our physical bodies, and I appreciate my Family and my true friends more now. I think that we should remember that our life in these bodies is very fragile, and we should slow down and enjoy what we have. And that even though THEY took down a building, THEY made us stronger as a nation, because it brought us together wether we were there giving someone a hug that really needed one or if we were at the very least there in our heart, which I was. I was too young to understand what the war about to be fought really meant. That was nothing compared to 9-11. I don't know why I turned on the news instead of listening to what was happening on the radio. At the time I started watching, the news caster was not really sure about what had really taken place. I will never forget seeing the beautiful blue sky and the silver colored plane that flew into the World Trade Center. When the scene changed to the fire at the pentagon, that was too close to home. The whole world changed on that day and nothing would ever be the same again. I had always felt safe in the US, but it was changed on the morning of 9-11, we are like the rest of the world now, vulnerable to attack. I try to make the best of every day and not put off things my husband and I have wanted to see and do. My children and grandchildren get more of my time. There was a song during the 2nd World War called, "We Must be Vigilant." It may sound maudlin, but everyday should be lived as if it was the last and that we are more aware of others. For ten years I was the game manager at a high school and I wanted to make the students remove their hats and stand during the national anthem, but was not allowed. I had a wooden replica of a flag that I kept on my door. I just took it down to put a seasonal wreath up. I am one of the one who has to wipe tears away when I see the flag, hear the national anthem, pledge of the flag. Young people need to be taught patriotic pride. I remember I woke up around 7 in the morning to a phone call. My mom's friend had rung up and said to turn on the news. We flip on the television and footage of the first tower being struck by the plane and eventually collapsing was playing, over and over. My initial feeling was of shock. Then I thought of my family on the east coast, my uncle who works in downtown Manhattan. Were they ok? We tried calling New York, but the lines were all busy. I remember my parents driving me to school with NPR on, listening to all the conflicting theories and news that was being relayed through the lines. I had a test in Western Civ that day, but I remember being too upset to take it. The day was so surreal. In a few classes we watched the news, and it was unreal to watch some of the most colossal buildings fall to the ground. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I don't think anyone's life can really be the same after 9/11. Safety is now a huge issue, especially airline safety. But I know that if I were on a plane and someone tried to pull something, I trust that now people are more aware of their surroundings, and would do something about it. Taking charge is what many heroes did on 9/11, and it saved many lives. Our nation has really come together and the American conciousness has changed. We've become more aware of sharing the experience of being American and also I think we've become more aware of life's fragility. At least, I have. So many people lost husbands, wives, children, siblings, and were never able to say goodbye. It's important to consider the fleeting quality of life, and recognize everyone around you. The firefighters who went back up into the towers to save the lives of employees, the men and women on the planes, the men and women who did their best to save the lives of their co-workers. I don't honestly remember if we flew an American flag after September 11. I know that my sentimentality regarding our flag really increased. I am an LPN and I was at work that morning when one of the CNA's I work with came up to me and said "A plane's crashed into the World Trade Center". I went into the dining room, which has a tv, and watched for a few minutes, shaking my head as to how a plane could do that on such a clear day. I then went back to work. When the 2nd plane flew into the other tower, the same CNA called to me that it happpened again! Now we all knew it wasn't a accident. I went into the room of one of my residents, a elderly lady watching her tv, who wasn't quite sure what was happening. I explained to her that 2 planes had flown, on purpose, into the WTC. She shook her head, said "Oh my God. Are we at war?" It was then I learned about the Pentagon. It all seemed to be coming too fast. I told her I didn't know, but we needed to do something. Rumors were flying fast and all we could do was watch in shocked silence. Then when we heard about the plane that went down in Shanksville, PA, the only thought I had was extreme anger at whomever was responsible. As usual, I hit the radio button as I drove off. I love to listen to KRLD News Radio as I drive to work. This morning I knew immediately something terrible had happened because the reporting was from a New York affiliate about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. At this time, it appeared it was just a tragic accident. The New York radio station received a call from a man who lived nearby describing the plane as a grey commuter plane. This put me at ease. I thought, as I drove down Orchid Lane next to the school, at least it's not a terrorist incident. Just 10 short minutes later, as I was merging onto LBJ Freeway, the shocking announcement of a second plane hitting. Instantly I realized it was indeed a terrorist incident. I shouted out in anger. "Where's the Air Force?" "Shoot them down". I called my wife and told her that planes had hit the World Trade Center and it was intentional. She spent the rest of the day watching T.V. I went on to work where people tried to carry out there normal duties but felt completely numb about what was happening in the East. Around 6 am pacific time I received a call from a gentleman in Brooklyn, NY. As I was placing his order he had mentioned a plane had "hit the World Trade Center". He mentioned all the tv stations were out so he was trying to get some reception using an old "rabbit ears" antenna. Just as we were speaking I could hear his wife in the background saying "Oh my God! Another plane just hit!" He asked her what was happening with me still on the phone. He stated they could see and smell the smoke from their window. Another plane had hit the second tower. I recall telling him, "One plane is an accident, two is terrorism. Best of luck to you folks back there." As I relayed the information to my coworkers, one of them ran up to me in tears. Two of her closest friends worked in each tower. Myself and one other person had radios and immediately turned on the news. For those who weren't close enough to hear, we'd relay what was happening via inter office email. Initially a supervisor told us to turn the radios off and get back to work. No one listened to that directive. We needed to hear what was happening. Then the radio announced plane had hit the Pentagon, and all aircraft were being ordered to land. I felt the blood rush to my feet when one coworker, who's radio kept working after the batteries in mine had died, "The World Trade Tower has collapsed!" Shortly thereafter, the second tower fell. I was stunned. I had grown up in NY, Long Island to be exact. When I moved away, the towers had not yet been erected. Now I will never see them. We then heard on the radio that all, save for one aircraft had been accounted for. Then another announcement of "an unconfirmed account" of a plane crash in Pennsylvania. What was happening to our world? Our call volume had completely ceased, and we received an email from corporate stating anyone wishing to go home would be permitted. It was now approximately 11 am. I went immediately to my mom's, only to find her sick in bed with no idea of what had happened. We turned on the news only to watch the replays again and again of each tower and it's occupants loosing their lives to terrorists. I have learned that life is so fleeting. Everything may be fine one moment, only to find it completely wiped away in an instant. I cherish the lives of those I'm close to. That we let our guard down. A major mistake every administration should well realize. Unfortunately, history has such a tendancy to repeat itself again and again. Those who perished at the hand of terrorists should always be remembered, not as heroes, but as Americans, and citizens proud to call their country home. For me, witnessing and expierencing September 11th were completly different. I witnessed the events from my third row seat in Chemestry Class. We were reviewing for a test when my teacher's phone rang, which was nothing unusual. She answered it and almost imediatly reached for the t.v. remote and turned on the news, saying "What happend to the towers?" My entire class watched quietly as the story began to unfold. We watched footage of the burning tower, not fully understanding what was happening. We saw the murders of thousands of people, not knowing how greatly it would eventually effect us. Our school was very fortunate not to have any dirrect connection to anyone who died that day. There was a slight sense of mourning, though not much had changed in our small comunity. Most people just went on with their lives as normal, occasionally turning on the news to see updates. The following week we expierienced the pain of these events and the reality of death became very real to us. Two of my fellow classmates died in a horrific car accident. That incident brought true mourning to our school. For me, personally, losing my friends gave me a glimpse of the pain that people accross America were feeling. I live on the west coast and was just waking up,sleepily,slowly, when I saw smoke and fire coming from one of the towers. The television had been on all night. I couldn't quite make out what was happening. Was it a movie? An accident? What was happening? I tried to open my eyes and ears wider, trying to discern the moment. Immediately I saw the second plane coming toward the second tower,and,like a huge blast to the stomach, crash almost completely through it. Shocked. I knew we, these United States, were under attack. My life has changed some not alot though. one of the ways is that i have been understanding more about the things that are and have happened in our world.I mean i do feel very sorry for all of the people that had to go through all of that and I wish that i can change it ,but what people should understand what is done is done theres nothing we can do about it except pray and ask the good lord up above that something like this wiil never happen again.
