I witnessed the history of september 11 from a television tape. to me, it didnt evem look like a real event . It looked like a movie. I also saw it as a wake up call, a rem,onder the the united states of America is not as invincible as it may seem to be. I remember watching the stock market for one of our classes, when this came on the news and we all watched as people were being carried to ambulences, and people were crying etc. It was a big event for a few days after this happend at our school because we all felt the need to greive for these people and show that we really did, and still do care today. There were many people that were injured and even killed on September 11th, and it effects me because they are people around me in the world that i live in, and everybody in this world is a part of me. This day is something that will never be forgotten by alot of people , if not everybody, and i know that i definitely wont forget it. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in my car on the way to the first MOPS(Mothers of Preschoolers)meeting of the year. It was a beautiful fall day and I was listening to the radio when the first report came in about the WTC being hit. My first thought was, "This is a bad attempt at a joke, even for a radio morning show." Over the next few minutes, though, I realized that this was REAL, not a gimmick. I was numb at first and then saddened and enraged at the nerve of these people, whoever they were. All I could think of was all the MOPS in New York who had just lost their husbands, brothers, fathers, as well as all the children who lost their mothers. I did not watch any TV coverage for two days because I just could not bear to see the images played over and over. My two children, ages 5 and 10 at the time, had many questions such as "Why did somebody do something so mean?" and "Is Dad going to have to fight a war?" Those were questions that not even I knew the answers to. My personal relationship with God is what gave me peace and sanity among the chaos and destruction of that day. No, except for a heightened awareness of our vulnerability as a nation to outsiders who envy and despise our freedoms. I no longer take for granted that I will never have to see war in my lifetime or that my husband or son will not have to fight in one. The strong, calming leadership that President Bush displayed. The stories of the people on Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, PA. My husband and I worked across the street from the Trade Center for years - our offices were in One Liberty Plaza - the black building you see in all the pictures. I quit my job at the end of July and I was home on 9/11. My husband went to work that morning and called me enroute to tell me he had forgotten his watch and was going to the Trade Center to buy a watch before work (he is watch-obsessed). A little while later, he called back and asked me to turn on the TV. I did and I started screaming - he asked me what was going on - he had heard that a commuter plane had hit the first tower - I told him that there was no way it was a commuter plane - it was much too large a fire - and to get out of there fast. He was about 3 blocks away and couldn't see the buildings though he was covered in debris. Being dedicated to his job, he said he was going to the office and would call me when he got to his desk. When I hung up with him, I called my sister in law - her husband (my husband's brother) is a lieutenant in the NYC fire department - my brother in law was not assigned to a particular fire house as he had just been promoted the month prior. I asked her where Steve was - he was on his way home - I told her to turn on the TV - she started screaming - we were on the phone with each other when my call-waiting beeped and - thinking it was my husband - I put her on hold - at the same time - the image on my TV was of the second plane about to hit the Trade Center - but my screen went blank. I didn't know what happened to the TV - my other sister in law was traveling into the city from NJ and wanted to know what was going on - she was trying to get into the Holland Tunnel - when I told her what I knew - she said she'd take the Lincoln Tunnel to make it to her meeting downtown - with me screaming at her to go home - we were disconnected (she never made it to NYC that day). I clicked back to my first sister in law - who was screaming into the phone that the second plane had hit when my TV went dead - and at about that time - my brother in law came home - She hung up the phone to talk with him - and my neighbors came over to stay with me until my husband came home or called. My husband did call again and was actually able to get home by noon that day. My brother in law went back to the city with many other firemen by bus from the old World's Fair site. Since then, my husband relocated to uptown NYC and has never been the same emotionally. He cringes at the sound of ambulances, fire trucks and helicopters. You see, he wasn't able to get into the office - and instead, stood on the corner for what seemed like forever and watched bodies fall from windows. He was then engulfed in all the blackness as the buildings came down. My brother in law was at the Trade Center for about 3 months. He was then placed on Funeral duty and then went back to the Trade Center until the end to search for body parts. He is also a forever - changed person. My family has been deeply affected - from losing friends to seeing the most incredible devastation. While our losses were real and continue to be real, our hearts and prayers are with those who never came home. We pray that those who were lost did not suffer - although we know that many did - and we pray that we never see such devastation again. We would like to thank the police and firemen of NYC - not to mention EMS, Port Authority members and all others who tried so hard to save lives while giving of their own. We are forever in your debt. And finally - Mayor Giuliani - while I was never a big fan - your composure and leadership during this time will never - ever - be forgotten. I worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Main Complex in Washington DC at the foot of the 14th Street Bridge across from the Holocaust Museaum. At approximately 9:45, radios throughout the office echoed the horrific news. I remember distinctly when my supervisor reported that there had been some sort of incident at the Old Executive Office Building. That was discounted and at that moment I felt really vulnerable. Ms. Bryan had the sense to say that she was leaving and not waiting for a "green light"...I'm thankful to her that I had the sense to follow her out of the building and onto the Metro, which was eerily quiet at 10:00 A.M (Smithsonian Station, Independence Avenue). My adrenaline was rushing, and I got home at around 10:50. My wife and I then went to my daughter's school and picked her up. I think that from all of the accounts that day I realized how one human being can really change the world if he looks outside of himself. I thank God for my wife, who is a 4 1/2 year survivor of breast cancer, and my daughter, Emily, growing up fast at 7. I'm 39, yet I believe the events of September 11 have made me realize how lucky we have been as a country to avoid combat on our soil. ...it is indeed hard to put into words NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Those that summoned all the energy they had to take charge and do what had to be done....people such as the firemen who helped that lady down tens of flights of stairs...and the unfathomable images of not only those tremendous buildings coming down, but of those who held hands and jumped to their deaths. I was on my way to school at the time and when I turned on the radio I had heard a plane crashed into a building, but I couldn't figure out when or where. As I listened, I found out more information. I called my mom and spoke with her briefly then went to class. By the time I walked into my first class, the second plane had struck. My professor tried to complete class and then someone shouted down the hall that a plane hit the Pentagon. After the instructor dismissed class. I immediately went to my job on-campus and called my parents. They both work at a refinery and I was worried because at the time we were hearing reports of other planes. I know it sounds silly, but I was terrified of something happening to them. I wanted to come home, but they urged me to stay put. I believe I take less for granted these days and truly appreciate my family more. I am also more vigilant about my surroundings and more scared about something happening to me. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in school listening to Mrs. Clay teach us a new english lesson and I was bored out of my mind. At the moment Dr. Wessel came over the loud speaker and told us to turn our T.V's on to channel 34. I was wondering why in the world we were turning our T.V on in the first place. I was wondering if a student made in outstanding claymation or video in art class so, I thought I would pay attention to the broadcast. When the image and sound finally came on the picture of two planes crashing into a building cought me by suprise. At first I didn't know were or what was happening. As the news went on I became a little more familliar with the on going tragedy. I was very confused with what was going on. It wasn't until a few days after the attack that I knew what happened and why it happened and where it happened. Most of my info came from the news at ten and the news paper. My life has changed in many ways after the attack on the U.S. I began to reliase more about how other people felt. I also began to respect people and who I am more. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the famillies and friens who had a victim or who was a victim should be remembered. Another thing that I can think of are those who ddonated andd/or helped after the planes struck the target. In the future many will people who run comapanies will beef up security and not let as many people in on a tour. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in my old school's auditorium. 4th row, 3rd seat. After I look back on what we were doing, it seems, ironically, to fit the situation perfectly, like it was meant to be right then, at the exact same time. It was our whole mini-school, mini-school 7-2, we were learning how to do the Pledge of Allegience in sigh language. My teacher, Ms. Newman, who is very emotional and beautiful inside and out, was teaching it to us, and right before she got the news, she told us how wonderful and heart-warming it was to see us practicing and taking it so seriously. Ironic... I know. Right then, another tacher who had been in the tacher's lounge watching the news and grading papers came in with a horror-stricken look on her face. She walked briskly up to Ms. Newman and whispered, what we would soon find out, awful and devastating news. Ms. Newman stood there for a solemn moment, with tears streaming down her cheeks. She finally, after what seemed like forever, turned around and faced all of our confused faces. She told us that we had been attacked. America, our America, had been attacked by terrorists. A plane had just hit one of the Twin Towers in New York. I sat there, stunned but dumbfounded, "What exactly does this mean? Are we in war, are we going to go into war? How could someone hate us so much?" A million thoughts were running through my head when I noticed all the kids around me stand up and start walking out off the auditorium. I have never seen us walk so quietly or quickly to our 3rd period classes. We went in and sat down in little groups talking about what we thought it meant. I no longer take my family for granted. I have so much more respect for the Pledge of Allegience and our nation's flag. When I am standing in home-room I don't mumble it like I used to or not say it at all. I say it, standing tall, and with pride. Yes, the firefighters, but also the people who gave blood, or donated drinks and canned food. Also the victims, the people who died right when the plane hit, the people who couldn't make it out in time, the firefighters who were saving lives when they died, and every single one of their families. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Columbus, Ohio. On the night before I had been out late with my former business partner. It had been a year since we got together after a tumultuous legal and business dispute that separated us. The long overdue dinner lasted late into the evening. I knew I did'nt have any appointments in the morning so I figured I could sleep in. I was awoken by the telephone on Tuesday morning by my mother who told me to turn on the TV because the WTC had been hit by a plane. I tuned in the "Today Show" just in time to see the second aircraft hit. I just sat in bed transfixed like everyone else. When the Pentagon was hit I suddenly felt fear. The phone started ringing non-stop with all my friends calling to exchange information. One call was from an employee, a college intern, telling me he had overslept and he would be late for work. I told him not to bother and that he should turn on the TV because, "America is under attack!" I finally decided that I needed to get downtown because at that point it seemed my life would just continue on as normal. This was just something playing out on television. My office is on the top floor of the tallest building in Columbus. In the car I heard on the radio that the second tower had fallen. I called the office to see what was going on. My secretary was crying and asked me if I thought "all those people got out?" I told her that I was on my way down and that if she wanted to leave she could. I tried to reassure her that Columbus, Ohio is probably not a top target of terrorists. When I got into the downtown area, the crises became real and personal to me. The streets around the government buildings downtown were all closed. Streams of office workers were exiting buildings. State government had been shut down. I couldn't get into my building and had to park several blocks away. As I was going up the elevator, I suddenly thought to myself, "What the heck am I doing?" I got to the office and everyone was gathered around the television in my office. The building management asked us to evacuate the building. So, I told everyone to leave. I met two old friends at a nearby restuarant for an early lunch. One brought with him one of those Eyewitness guide books which had detailed diagrams of the WTC. We watched television from the bar for a couple of hours and then went home. When I got home I felt kind of lonely. I just sat on the sofa and watched the news the rest of the day. Late in the day a friend called and told me to look up in the sky fast. I ran outside and there in the sky was Airforce One with two fighters on its wings flying over Ohio on its way back to DC. It was the only aircraft in the sky that day and it just seemed so unreal. I stayed up most the night watching the news probably like everyone else. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes. For weeks after the event I felt so vulnerable. Even when driving I would jump at a horn blowing or any noise. I felt like the country was crawling with terrorists. It was a good month before I felt things were really back to the way they used to be. The most significant change in my life has been on limiting my travel. I used to travel all the time. I loved to fly. I would go to Europe once a year and travel regularly between New York, Chicago and LA. I was at least eight months before I got on a plane again. I was a little nervous. Travel is no longer fun. It is a difficult and serious task. Where I used to think nothing of telling a client that I would fly out to meet with them, now I do not travel unless I have to. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? School children in the future should be made to watch tapes of the live events unfolding on television that day. They should read the individual stories of the victims. As emotionally difficult as that may be, it is through the victims' lives that we best remember and understand what happened. Such ordinary lives individually touch the soul far better than any speech, memorial marker or event. Through their lives we appreciate the most of all our obligations as survivors. There was a flag pole in front of my house when I bought it about four years ago. When I moved in a friend gave me a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol as a house warming gift. I never bothered to put it up. I put it up at half staff that week and was very proud to raise it to full staff later. It is still up today. I have always been one who took seriously what the flag symbolizes. But, today it has so much more personal meaning to me. To me, the flag is the banner which represents the most unique and successful experiment in all of human history. It represents a place more than anything else. It is a place where free will is embraced, where the individual trumps the collective, where all are encouraged to seek happiness, where human dignity is respected above all else. I was sitting in my chemistry class when a student in another class told my class that a plane hit one of the towers. Throughout the rest of the day, students, teachers, and I watched a variety of news channels to stay updated on what's going on. That night, my parents and I discussed what had happened that day. Every morning for the rest of the school year, my parents and I watched the news together before work and school. Yes, my family and I flew many flags after 9/11/01. We set up about 25 flags in our yard, 1 in my room, and 1 on both of the family's cars. When I walked in my teacher asked me if I had heard, but I had no idea what she was talking about. After all of my class was in the room and sitting down, my teacher announced that the United States had been attacked. At the time none of us really understood what was happening. All of my class ended up watching the the terror happen on the television for the rest of the class period. For the entire day all of my peers were terrified that we would be attacked too. On september 11 I thought it was just an ordinary day , i went to my two encore classes which were orchastra and computer not knowing the united states was under attack. I walked into my history class were my teacher was starring at the television screen, I knew something was wrong by the look in his face and when I sat down and began to watch it myself I was stunned america had been attacked on it's own soil. I sat there just wondering did I know anyone? Are people hurt? When did this start? so many questions went through my head and then it happened both buildings fell, I couldn't do anything and I felt so worried and i wanted to help everyone I wanted to get them out of the buliding but I couldn't I was watching people die on national television. A horrible feeling swept through my body and all I could think of were all of the people , and the peoples family. what happened to america that morning was a tragic and suprizing thing, It was as if america woke up and in a generals words " i think we woke up a sleeping giant." America yearns for all those who were lost but we know God will take care of them and they are looking down on us right now. So as the world turns we'll fight back. Ever since september 11 I have felt that I am more important to my country and that everyone makes our nation great not just the goverenment. I didn't know anyone who died in Ground Zero but it still effected me becasue america is a family. I go to church a lot more maybe a fear of dieing and knowing where I'll go or maybe not maybe it was just I felt more speritual after the event. I Know so many were effected by this and I know we will heal as a country , "one nation under god." NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the loss was the people not the building , I mean sure the building was big and it was like a monument but there were not many lost in the ash and depri. I think that we should all remeber that america is a family and that people everywhere are effected by what goes on in your life and your effected by there's. Don't worry about what is to come we have a great goverenment and a awesome military they'll stick behind us just be the best that you can and appriciate how they take care of us. My family has always hung an american flag , my dad was in the veitnam war and he's really patriotic. On the field in Pennsylvania a group of proud Americans formed a ring around the area the plane crashed and lit candles. All throughout the country flags were hung, games were stopped, candles were lit, and patriotic songs were sung. The Prsident's speech touched all americans big and small.
