My science teacher Mr. Thomas, came in and inturepted the class to let us know that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. We were brought into his office to watch it live,in a matter of secounds another plane had hit, in which I viewed it Live! We were surround by crying teachers and some students! Also we were immediantly evacuaded because it was pretty obvious that this was no mistake! Many students went home because they couldnt take the rest of the day at school! I began to appreciate people more and become a nicer person because you never know when it will be your last goodbye with someone. I began to treat people as if there is no tommorow! I think what should be remebered about September 11th is that so many innocent people died for such a stupid reason! That so many officers and fire fighters died to try to save as many people as they could, even putting there own life at risk! I have and I also think that most of the people have! We saw them everywhere and then after a couple of months some people got ride of them, or cut down on them! I dont think that that is appropriate because so many workers of the WTC, Firefighters, and police officers put there lives at risk so that Americans can take the flags down after a while! I sat down to see what she was watching. Then, that's when i saw the toweres go down. I didnt know what happened really. I couldnt stop watching the news because I wanted to know why someone would ever do this. I ended up watching the news for an hour and a half. I talked to my sister about what happened. She was as amazed as I was to find out that some country would destroy this nation and impact the world. Nothing seemed to hit me until later that night. If so, tell us how. My life has changed in the smallest amount. I see our country as more than freedom, but as my home and heart. Some poeple might live in fear of what may come in the years to come, but I see people coming together trying to beat this war. I feel proud to be in the USA. I hope that some how other poeple can see how this tome has brought us togther, but it has also brought us into fear. This day was the worst. people became heros, people died, and people never know what will happen to our country after this day. I remember the shows that came on showing the posters of all the poeple that were missing. People crying about thier loved ones hurt me. This country has to go through a war because of another country. I think that we should remember the strangers that were on the planes that tried to help each other along the way. We should remember the way that people felt sad and terrified when they saw the news, and the way people ran away from the debris. Never have I thought that I would be alive when another war broke out. We should remember how safe we did feel. All in one day, everything that we knew and loved was taken away. I did not hang a flag up outside my house, but when i saw flags i thought about this day. I see the way this nation stands. I don't see the flag any less than before. Living in a small town in Tennessee, I am located a long ways from where the main attacks occured, however, since my daughter was a firefighter in the D.C. area, it hit close to home. I was at work and we were in the middle of a staff meeting when the business owners' Mother called and said.. turn the T.V. on.. we are under attack!!! I am not sure what we were thinking but we finished our meeting and then turned on the Television to see what she was talking about. We all stood in disbelief as to what we were seeing on the television. I attempted to call my daughter, Shawna Humphrey Spigone, but of course was unable to get through the D.C. area. Shortly after seeing the chaos, my phone rang, thank God, it was my daughter. She said "Mom, I am standing outside of the Pentagon, I borrowed someones Cel Phone, we are staged and getting ready to go inside, I just wanted to call and tell you that I love you" All I could say through the held back tears was "Be Careful and I love you too" .. Needless to say, I was not much use to anyone for the rest of the day, until many hours later, she called and said I am back at the station and we are all okay. I thank God for that every day! Yes, Following September 11th two of my children, at that time one was living in Washington D.C. and one in Massachusettes, have since moved home, I believe this experience has made the family realize how important we are to each other. When i woke up that moring i jumped right into the shower, When i came our to iron my clothes, my dad yelled for me to come out and see what was on the TV. When I came in there my dad said "We are being attacked". At first i didnt belive it, but when i turned to look at the TV i was pretty suprised. I had never seen anything like it before. I had no idea the sever damage it was causing, i then continued ironing my clothes and the second plane hit. After that i sat down and tryed to take it all in,but then when i looked closley i saw people haning out of windows and people jumping. After Sept. 11th my familt flew a flag on the car. We also went out on several nights with a big flag and waved it on the street. We also had candles. I was sitting in my first hour social studies class. when a teacher walked in and told us to turn on CNN. Then all i remember is looking at the tv and seeying the replay of the planes hitting the world trade center. Then all the sudden the other plane hit and everyone was screeming. As I was driving to work on September 11, I had just dropped off my two young sons at pre-school and was listening to the radio. At first I thought this must be some type of joke. What were they talking about, an attack. Then the reality of the event started to sink in. Our country was in jepordy. I felt like I needed to turn around and pick up my boys. There had to be some way I could protect them. I was 6 months pregnant with my 3rd son and all I wanted to do was run. Take my family and run. I immediatly called my husband and told him what had happened, he hadn't heard about it on his way to work. I was confused,scared and pregnant. After discussing it we decided that I needed to go to school and teach my students that were depending on me. I knew the would be confused and scared too. I was needed and I needed to be there. My 5th grade class was incharge of the assembly and we did an entire patriotic theme. Each child held a flag and told about the importance of it to our country. The news was on every channel and everybody was freaking out and i didnt get it and i didnt know what was going on. i was scared for whatever it was. i didnt actually really know what was going on until school started because my mom was too freaked out and getting ready for work to explain to me what was going on. my first period class is history and as soon as i walked in the door, my teacher already had it on, we watched it the whole period and the rest of the week. so then finally i found out and realized what was going on because i had no idea. thats all we did at school was talk about and watch 9/11 on the news. i was very shocked. If so, tell us how. yes my life changed. it changed that minute. i was so terrified for the next few months. i am terrified of death and i always have been as a kid. when this happened i was so scared i started crying because i didnt know what was going to happen next. everytime i heard i plane, i was frantic. i was so scared. i asked my parents and my boyfriend constantly "Are we going to die" kind of questions. Then i found out that one of my great aunts works in one of the Twin Towers. i was scared for her too. we didnt know if she was alive or not until the next day. she was safe and got out of there quickly. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My son David and his girlfriend Lizzie live in Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York State. Lizzie was doing a Masters Degree in Curatorial Studies at Bard Colege and David went with her. In the week that included September 11th. we knew that they were staying in a friends appartment in Manhatton and we knew that they were going to visit the World Trade Centre. On September 11th. I was teaching at school when an ex member of staff came to visit and said "Have you heard what's happened? A plane has flown into one of the Twin Towers!" I don't know how I stayed teaching that class! At hometime I rushed off thinking that David and Lizzie would have left a message on the answer phone to say that they were safe. No message. A little later my husband came home from work early. Neither of us knew if the other had heard of the plane crashes and the collapse. We kept trying to phone David and Lizzie but could not get through. I e mailed messages asking them to let us know if they were OK. Five hours later they were able to phone out to let us know that they were safe. It was the longest five hours of our lives but - they were safe! My husband and I had just flown home to Alaska (four hours behind the Eastern Time Zone) from our wedding September 8th, finally arriving back to our house from the airport about 2 A.M. September 11th. Since we aniticipated being exhausted, we planned to sleep in. Later that morning, I woke before he did, and I thought a wonderful way to wake him up for our first full married day in our home would be for me to sneak out to pet boarder to retreive our two Siberian Husky "kids." While I was standing in the lobby waiting for the dogs to come out, two people came in and said "I guess we're not flying today, I'm here to pick up my dog." I was confused and asked if there was something wrong with the airport. That is when everyone in the lobby looked at me in disbelief. They couldn't believe I didn't know what was happening. I raced home and unfortunately had to wake my husband on our first day of our married life to the biggest national disaster of our lifetime. Nearly everything was "over" by the time began watching the new accounts. After learning the true details, I couldn't handle continuing to watch the events. I had planned to fly out September 13th for a my first job interview that required me to travel to the client's site. In a strange twist of fate, this interview was with a major Federal government security contractor. I was terrified to fly and was continually torn about whether I should do it at all. In October of the following year I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC and toured the September 11 exhibbition at the Smithsonian. All the emotion that had been packed away for 13 months came rushing to the surface. It was the most emotional visit to our nations capital I had ever experienced. In a strange twist of irony, I visited the DC and Virginia area at the same time as the Sniper Seige. This experience seems so inconsequential in comparison to the complete devastation of so many lives, families, businesses, and national well being, but it is my story. Being very tired, I immediately went to bed without listening to the news on the radio or watching it on TV. This was right at 8:45 AM New York time, about the very instant the first (north) World Trade Center tower was hit. When I awakened and got up about 1 PM, my wife, who had been up during the day, said that New York had been bombed. At this point, I directed my attention to the TV set, on which pictures of the destruction and disarray in New York and Washington, D.C., were being shown, along with continuous verbal coverage by various broadcast personalities. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Personally, I have noticed no real changes in my life since Sept. 11, 2001. However, for a while, I remember hearing a greater than usual number of disparaging (=prejudiced and obscene) comments being said by people about foreigners in general and Near Eastern and South Asian people in particular. Most of these comments were uttered by acquaintances whom I consider relatively uneducated and possibly bigoted to begin with. Also, a couple of months after 9-11, my wife and I went to Vancouver, B.C., and noticed that the border controls by both U.S. and Canadian immigration and customs agents were being performed much more formally and not at all courteously. Although we had no problems, as we had read about the need to have our birth certificates with us, I observed other vehicles and their occupants being "given the nth degree" of nearly Gestapo-like scrutiny. I totally disagree with the paranoid, xenophobic reaction of the Bush administration to the events of 9-11 (ramming through Congress of the so-called Patriot act, severe restrictions on, and even persecution of, foreigners, and most annoying, starting two foreign wars justified on obviously completely fabricated "evidence", e.g., the never discovered weapons of mass destruction. I feel the U.S. should recognize the grievances of the Arabs and other Islamics whom the West, and especially the U.S. and Israel, have persecuted for so many years. Let's correct the wrongs committed against the people of the Middle East instead of pandering to the narrow-minded, strictly emotional xenophobia being fanned by people like John Ashcroft and George W., alias Baby, Bush. No, I have NEVER flown an American flag, and I NEVER shall display one. As a veteran of the Vietnam war, I have already seen and suffered the tragic consequences of an evil war perpetrated by the American power structure in the name of alleged liberty and democracy. To me the flag is just a piece of cloth, nothing more, and I even refuse to say the pledge of allegiance in places where it is being recited. I support the right of people to do with and to the flag as they please. The only reason I will not burn a flag is that burning something as meaningless as a piece of cloth merely causes increased air pollution. I had waken up at around 8 o' clock to go to my math class, I had been attending Virginia Commonwealth University. The class was supposed to be over at around 9, but I left the class early because I was hungry and it was such a beautiful day. I got back to my room, where my roommate was sleeping, at about a little after 8:45, and turned on the Today show. It was showing a picture of the first World Trade Center smoking. I thought, like Katie Couric had said that something had exploded inside the World Trade Center, until, in horror, I saw the other plane crash right into the other tower. At this point, I was dumbfounded, I woke my roommate up, woke my neighbors up, called as much family as possible to get them to know what had happened. Unfortunately, it didn't end there, once I learned about the explosion at the pentagon, I immediately called my parents, because they work very close to where it is to make sure they were all right, I mean, at the time I was hearing stories of car bombs, explosions, and other such things happening all over D.C. so I was very worried, I was also worried for my two aunts, one works in the State Dept., the other works two blocks from the White House, so I tried to reach them, unfortunately by that time, everyone with a cell phone had picked it up and was calling to make sure all their family was alright. As a sixteen-year-old high school sophomore at the time, I remember struggling out of bed in the morning at about 6:15 AM (local time; 7:15 AM Eastern Time) and thinking that today would be just like any other day. When the first plane struck the World Trade Center at 8:48 AM Eastern Time, locally it was 7:48 AM and I was in my "early bird" photography class at my high school, sitting on an uncomfortable "art class" stool reading the book "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking. After my phys. ed. class (1st hour), I was walking toward my Economics Survey class (2nd hour) when I overheard the school's stationed police officer tell another teacher in an excited voice about "smoke" and "the Pentagon". I didn't give it a second thought. As I sat down at my desk in my next class, a classmate asked if anybody had heard about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center; no one knew much about it, and I just thought it was possibly a rumor (after all, what does the WTC have to do with the Pentagon?), or, at its worst, similar to the B-25 crash into the Empire State Building in 1945. After the tardy bell rang, however, our principal came on the intercom and told the entire hushed school, in his rumbling voice, that there had been a major terrorist attack in New York City and that the World Trade Center towers had collapsed. I was shocked, almost to the point of disbelief, when the word "collapsed" reached my ears from the disembodied voice emanating from the classroom intercom. I was shocked at the magnitude of the attack and had also thought since I was a small child (I've always been interested in engineering) that the twin WTC towers couldn't collapse; as skyscrapers, they were far too sound and were therefore completely safe. After all, they easily withstood a previous terrorist bombing (1993) that was meant to topple the towers like dominoes. After our principal finished what he had to say, he asked for a particular student (whose uncle worked in the WTC) to come to the office (later, it turns out, this uncle was taking the day off to go golfing). The teachers had an emergency meeting with the school administration to be briefed on what had happened. In my next class, World History, taught by an awesome teacher (technically he's retired, but so excellent that the school keeps asking him to come back every year), we listened to the radio and teacher Richard "Lord" Nelson wrote on the front chalkboard, in typical style: "My guess is the people who have assaulted us this morning believe Americans are soft. They think we'll get hysterical and get all wobbly. That we won't go about our normal business. Let's not give in to this." (Later [maybe it was Sept. 12, but I can't be sure], that history teacher climaxed a captivating speech on the attack and the history behind Islamic fundamentalist extremism with the proclamation that "History is with us, folks! We can't escape history!") In my next class, my not-too-bright English teacher, when referring to bin Laden (whom we were generally suspecting) squawked, "What's his problem?!" I found that a far too simple question then, and think all the more so now. TVs were set up near the cafeteria for live coverage of the event, and Sept. 11 was the first day in high school that I didn't eat lunch. I spent my lunch period gaping at the TV sets. Before I could go to my next class, however, the school lights were suddenly shut off and everyone was ordered to evacuate the building. As if the past few hours hadn't been confusing enough, after standing bewildered outside in the sun for several minutes, it turned out that so many electrical appliances had been turned on in the school (TVs, radios, computers) for news of the event that an electrical transformer had blown on the school power grid and shut down the fire alarms (or so I heard). Thus, to many cheers and to many silent, anxious faces (I was one of the silent, anxious ones), school was dismissed early for the day, and what a day that was. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I am sure that Sept. 11, 2001, has changed me in more ways than I am aware of. I AM aware, however, that Sept. 11 probably made me think more historically on issues, and that stereotypes of any culture only serve to reinforce misunderstandings (of course, my history teacher helped, too). NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we should remember the misunderstandings we had with OURSELVES. Firefighters chanting "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" around President Bush at Ground Zero isn't going to get anything done. Harming (even killing) innocent people of Middle-Eastern descent after Sept. 11 uses twisted logic that is the SAME THING that caused the Sept. 11 attacks in the first place. Patriotism is important, but we should NOT let heart-pounding patriotism get in the way of a global and historical view of conflicts. This is very dangerous. Ironically, this is probably because I was so bewilderingly immersed in flag-waving around town that I didn't think to fly a flag myself. My feelings about the American flag have not changed since Sept. 11. It is a symbol which, through historical notation (50 stars, 13 stripes) represents a country founded on priciples that conflicted and still conflict (or at least seemed to conflict) with others. (The aristocratic founding fathers had undoubtedly capitalist views. As a nation, we have not deviated from this.) I do not think the flag should be treated as holy, however it is a great symbol of a great nation, though this nation isn't, and never will be, like any other nation, flawless. In Memory Of Those Who Made The Ultimate Sacrifice As I pulled into Grand Central Station I checked my gear; goggles, respirator, gloves, CPR mask etc. I got off the train and walked towards the 42nd St. exit. There I was greeted by two New York City police officers. The eldest of the two looked at my baseball cap and said Hey Fairfield thanks for coming, just walk up to the corner and the volunteer bus will pick you up and take you in. I sat on the bus next to a few construction workers and Fire Fighters from Connecticut. All was quiet, no one had anything to say, I guess we were all just thinking about what we were about to see. As we drove away from Grand Central I heard cheers, I looked out the window and saw people standing on the corner and others walking by, they cheered and wished us luck. I looked at the others with me and couldn't help noticing the expressions on their faces. I think I may have been the only one who noticed the well wishers, everyone else had a look of uncertainty, blank expressions with wide eyes as they all gazed out their windows, never really focusing just apparently day dreaming. We reached the site known to all by this time as Ground Zero. I've never seen anything like it, miles of equipment, ambulances, fire trucks, heavy construction vehicles, trucks full of food and drink. Police vehicles from all over the state and many from surrounding states lined the roadway. We were then escorted by NYPD to the drop off point just outside the perimeter of Ground Zero. The bus driver parked, then stood up and said Thanks for coming, good luck, God bless you all. We exited the bus and were led by police and the national guard to a staging area where we were fitted with the correct equipment, boots, respirators, heavy duty work gloves and complete rain gear. We were offered water and food but no one accepted any, we were all to eager to begin helping. I continued to look around and couldn't help but notice those who had just left Ground Zero, the tired and somber look on their faces, many with tears in their eyes. Their clothing covered with gray dust, which has become so synonymous with Ground Zero. They walked slowly towards the barricades with their helmets off and jackets draped over their arms or shoulders, all with the sign of a struggle, a look of exhaustion, and the expression of despair. As we entered Ground Zero reality hit home, we were in a hell of ash and steel. All around us, dust, smoke and an indescribable smell. I joined a group passing buckets of debris, there must have been at least 50 of us. We passed the buckets down the line where others sifted through them looking for anything. The trucks lined the street waiting to take their cargo, one leaving the scene every few minutes. I continued this for at least an hour, my hands began to cramp and my fingers hurt. The whole time no one spoke, we were determine to do as much as we can until the next group relieved us. The rain tapered down now but the wind made it feel like late October. The sweat still poured down my face and I could taste the dust on my lips. We were all pretty exhausted, even though we only worked for a couple of hours. I think our emotions had a lot to do with it. We've not only become physically tired but emotionally exhausted, it was hard to tell the difference between sweat and tears. I was done, and tried to find a place to sit and rest for a moment. I found a large piece of granite and sat on the ground using the stone as a back rest. I pulled my gloves off and noticed the redness around my fingers with blisters just starting to appear. I removed my hat and wiped my brow only to find dust and dirt on my hands and finger nails. I looked around and again couldn't help noticing all the other helpers also tired, some standing, some sitting, some looking at the sky, but all with the same expression on their faces, one that we've all shared through this ordeal. The look of hurt, bewilderment, and disbelief. As we started to walk away, again I saw another image, one Ill never forget. A station wagon on the side of all the rubble, covered in a deep coat of gray ash and dust. Its side windows blown out and all its tires flat. On its windshield, a flower, a bright red rose with its long majestic stem holding its thorns. As I stared at it in disbelief a smile slowly came to me and I thought...just like the American spirit here sits this beautiful flower, amongst all this tragedy, all this darkness, all this ugliness, it remains defiantly beautiful and full of life, yet with its pointed thorns it sends its message to all who dare disturb it. I continued to look back at the site as I walked out into the cheering crowd and countless volunteers who waited for us with water, food and dry clothing. In all my wildest dreams I would have never realized the magnitude of this tragedy and the unrelenting spirit of all who helped. I left the scene with a heavy heart, and a choking sensation in my throat, followed by tears in my eyes, wondering if there was anything else I could have done or helped with. On my mind, all those people around the perimeter, waiting, hoping, anxious for news about their friends or loved ones that still remain missing. On my train ride home I closed my eyes and fell into a deep sleep only to be awaken by the sound of the trains arrival in Westport. I looked around with blurred vision trying to focus on my surroundings and noticed many commuters that had boarded the train, all staring at me and commenting amongst themselves. We arrived in Fairfield and as I grabbed my gear and stood by the train door I was thanked by some of these commuters particularly by one woman who said God Bless You. I responded, God Bless Us All! My Final Thoughts My Condolences to all that have been affected by this senseless Tragedy we all carry a heavy heart and remain by your side. I was standing in the elevator when i started over hearing about a plane crashing into a building. Then as i was headed to class, i heard it was the world trade center. i thought that it was just a small plane. Then I heard that two planes had each hit a tower. I had time before class, so i went to a computer lab and found out the details of the unfolding events on the internet. Come class time, I hear from a girl whom i attended high school with that the pentagon had just been hit. That is where I realized that we were under attack. All day, the tvs throughout campus had a huge crowd. As I was watching, I new something was wrong when the FAA closed the airspace over our country. I think that we should remember how all of our everyday workers who are taken for granted are heroes. Police, firefighters, janitors, even people traveling on business who averted more disasters. I think with the flag, we need to use it as a symbol of freedom. We need to realize that we are lucky around the world. I think that my life has changed quit a bit since Sept.11. I don't take as much for granite anymore. I have also become to see how strong our country is in the fact that we are not going to back down from this and we are going to get these terrorists back and through watching our country come together and all agreeing on the same thing, I myself have become more patriotic. I think that we should remembered how the planes crashed and you did it. I think that we should remembered the people and families that died, the firefighters that gave their lives, the armed forces that are over there getting justice, and all the other men and women that put forth some kind of effort to help heal our nation. As Deputy Director of our County Emergency Management office, we were setting up to conduct a evacuation exercise at detroit Metro Airport when our Admin yelled to turn on the TV, like everyone else, we watched the event unfold. We were shocked, but more amazing was that the exercise scenario was to be an expolsive device. On hand were the EOD and K-9 teams. Our exercise became real as we activated our EOC and started processing the information and actions we would take for the next 30 hours. The idea that what was normal is no longer accepted, and we can no longer think that the 'unthinkable' could not happen. Yes, we placed 1 on the back side of our office, facing a runway for people to see as flights are taxing for takeoff, sewn flag patsches on our clothing, and placed flag images on our writtwen material. I think the feeling of Country has been imbetted in our sense of what we do, all the time.
