I was traveling from Fort Worth to Dallas that morning to attend a seminar on metals and metal materials for specifiers. As I was about to enter the parking garage of the Dallas Regency, the music I was listening to was interrupted by the news people and they cut in as the first tower began to fall. The news anchor recounted the preceeding few moments and the eye witness at the scene described what he was seeing. I could not believe what I was hearing and pulled into a parking spot. Upon entering the lobby of the hotel, there were scores of people standing around the T.V. in the Lobby. There were men in tears, and, as I'm an architect, I was in a state of unbelief, for other reasons. Then the second tower fell and my heart fell along with it and I cried. I think that architecture should spend more time understanding the root and spirit of what America deserves prior to developing the replacement facilities of that site. Now, there are the greatest and most bright minds on that subject but America's soul was touched and to build on quazi-holy ground will be, for the most part, beyond the current abilities of American architects, in my opinion. However, i did not know it happened until after english class when i heard some kids talkinjg about planes flying into a building or something. Then i got to health class and I saw the picture of the twin towers burning. I could not believe it. I didn't even fully realize what had happened until later that day, in sixth period social ctudies we watched tv while we did our class work. Some of the teachers were really mean and seemed to not care as if it was not important but when i got home i remember all the stations had stopped broadcasting and change over to the news on every channel so i watched nothing but the news for like six or seven hours. I will never forget the look that I saw in the eyes of those who were in fear that they would never hear or see their loved ones again. The images of those people hoping and praying that they would be able to see the people again that they loved so dearly is unbearable.The song that Alan jakson came out with " where were you on that september day" really puts it all into perspective for everyone in this country- from those that lost people to those who just stood in wonderment at what was happening to US. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11 started for me with an early morning phone call in Houston. My husband and I had decided to sleep in after a rare night out the night before and my first class (I was in the second year of graduate school) didn't start until 11:30. It was a few minutes after the second plane had hit when the phone rang, and I knew something was wrong as soon as I heard it was my mother. The first thing she said was "do you remember what building your father works in?" to which my response was "What, again!?" My father had been in WTC in 1993 the first time it was attacked. When she told me that two planes had hit the towers, I immediately thought of small planes like cessnas had hit. I went to turn on the TV the first image that came up was the second plane hitting. I thought "oh my god, oh my god" over and over again". I couldn't remember where my father's office was exactly, so I told my mother I would look it up and call her back, since my father's cell phone wasn't picking up. When I saw that one of his firm's offices was located in the World Financial Center, I called the other office (since at the time I didn't know there was a difference) and tried calmly to ask to be transferred to his line (the direct line wasn't working). I feel bad for the poor operator who was handling calls that day, she must have gotten so many calls from people like me who knew little about the financial district other than loved ones worked there. She explained that his building was accross the street from WTC, and that the firm had been evacuated and everyone who was in the office accounted for. At that point I felt a bit of relief, but since my dad could have easily been seeing some of the many clients he had, and I still could not find him, had me very worried. It was almost midnight in 1993 when we finally found him. Not knowing what else to do, I started getting ready to leave for school, with my husband driving because he could tell I was trying very hard not to completely freak out. As we were leaving, I watched as the first tower collapsed, but my husband kept saying I couldn't see it because of the smoke, that was all. In the car, they broke in to the news that had broken into regular programming to announce the second tower had fell. School was a mess. One of my professors asked if I was okay and I told him where my father worked and we couldn't find him. Some of the less enlightened of the professors were in the hall arguing about which ethnic group was responsible. Most of people's efforts were dedicated to trying to get to the CNN website since there were no TVs in the department. I remember wandering down the hallways, asking to borrow someone's cell phone to try my dad's line again. About that time someone said they had heard almost no cell phones were working in the NYC area. All I could do then was wait, ad leave messages on his home number. Classes were cancelled, and my professor drove me home. It was about noon Central time at that point, and my husband was sitting watching tv and fielding calls from my mother. I didn't think that I could stand waiting so long again to find out what happened. I would feel terribly guilty and selfish about this in the days to follow, as the missing posters went up. I was lucky - about 1:30 my dad got through to tell me he was okay, that he was at a client meeting in New Jersey at the time. Only later did I find out that he was there because he was running behind for his meeting at the WTC. I don't remember doing anything else that day, but watching television until early the next morning, trying to make some sense of it all. In the days following, it was as if we were all waiting for the "other shoe to drop" - for more attacks to come. I don't feel that another attack is imminent anymore, but I wonder when it will be. I also am now somewhat relieved when the first thing I see when I turn on the TV is commercials. They've almost become a sign of normalcy. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That people went out of their way to help others. Like people going to the airports and offering help to all of the people stranded. But I also think that some of the ugliness that happened should be remembered as well, like the rumor that started on campus that middle eastern students had run out of class cheering when they heard about the attacks. I honestly didn't understand the patriotism reaction at the time, and the fact that this was an act of war took some time to sink in. On the morning of Spetember 11, 2001, i went to school and saw my teacher sitting at her desk crying. When we all sat down, our teacher turned on the T.V. and shared with us what had happened. My coworker answered it and it was her husband telling her that 'they' had just hit the Worl Trade Center. Then a few minute later he called again and said that the World Trade Center had collapsed and that then Pentagon had been hit.We were all in shock, did'nt know what to do.We turned on the radio to listen. It was like an eery silence came over the store. No one was talking,just listening and thinking what was going to happen next. It was very scary. It was devistating to see all the of the heads turned towards the ground, I couldnt tell if they were praying or crying. When i got home after school, I still didn't really understand what had happened to the buildings that day. When i began watching the coverage on television it seemed unreal what had happened. I didn't think that anything could happen to the United States. I found out then that bad things can happen to good people, on other peoples religion and bad will. I was at work in Chicago in the Prudential Building when my project coordinator told me that "this" just happened -- he was looking at a picture on the internet of the first building burning. At first I thought it was a traffic helicopter that had crashed. I was working with a nervous consultant who was standing over me while I edited some charts. A girl in my group got off the phone with her sister and started crying. The rest of the group went to a bank of TVs in our office and watched the second plane hit. It still hadn't really hit me what was happening. I continued to work on the charts. We were told that if we wanted to leave, we could. Everyone else in my group left. Our office manager came by and said it was now mandatory that we evacuate the building. The consultant asked me if I could work on the charts later that evening because they had a meeting in the a.m. My thoughts were, "Your meeting has been cancelled!" A friend of mine who lived near me called to say she had driven in and would I want a ride home. We sailed home -- the highways were empty. We later heard the commuter trains were packed like Calcutta. When I got home, I watched the events on TV -- it was the first time I saw it. I cried and cried. It was the worst thing I have ever seen. I called my sister whose brother-in-law worked in the South Tower. Fortunately he hadn't been there that day. I called my mom and we cried together. It still effects me deeply. We later found out at work that one person from our firm had been killed in one of the towers. Several others had escaped with minor injuries. I wasn't really aware of the events that had happened in 1993 at the World Trade Center, so my thoughts did not immediately leap to terrorism when I saw the first building burning. Terrorism was one of those things that was remote and would never happen in my world. Now I am hyper-aware of it all. Working in Chicago, we've been told that the city is a target. Security has been tightened everywhere, especially the Sears Tower. It's sad but necessary. I also feel that people are friendlier to each other since the attacks -- more caring of each other, more unified in their outlook. I feel that way. That America united after the attacks was a wonderful thing to see. I saw a lot of compassion in my workplace and in my friends and neighbors. Share your experience. well on september 11th it was just a regular day. i just went to school not knowing what happened earlier. so i went to first period still knowing what had happened. and after 20 minutes my english teacher turned on the radio and there was men telling us about what had happened earlier that morning. so we were listening to howard stern talking about this horrific event and how the second tower had just fallen. i remember that it didnt really matter to me at the time cuz i didnt even know what the world trade center was. it was just another building for me. but when i went home and saw people falling out of the building it hit me hard. it was just breathe taking seeing people jumping trying to live and do what ever it takes to do so. and just seeing the plane fly into that building was horrible. and the thing is that i had just visited the pentagon about one week prior to semptember 11th. and i was going to stay an extra week to visit new york but since we had no where to stay at last minute we didnt end up staying. so i thank god that i didnt stay an extra week. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Being on the night shift that week, I was asleep when it all began to unfold. At about 9:30 that morning, my phone began to ring off the hook and no one was leaving messages on my machine. Over and over it would ring about every five or ten minutes until I finally couldn't stand it anymore and got up to answer it with a rather shall we say, angry salutation. It was my girlfriend on the line and she was terrified. "Sweetie, i know you're sleeping and I'm sorry but I think you'd better go turn the TV on." This made my blood run cold. As I moved to the living room I asked what was going on, because it's very unlike her to be this freaked out over anything. Her response as she began to cry, "the World Trade Center is gone, the Pentagon is on fire, it's gone, they're all gone..." My only resonse was, "What do you mean gone?" That question was answered with one look at the TV. The image showed the North Tower in flames and just then the second jet slammed into the South Tower. I had no idea I was watching a replay of this. It was like some sort of bizzare dream. Then they replayed the collapse. I said, "Oh my God, they've dropped." To which my girlfriend sobbed, "That's what I've been telling you!" From the moment I laid eyes on the scene, I couldn't even hear her anymore, everything was silent, I hadn't heard a word she was saying. That numbness and the inability to absorb or even fathom what I had seen with my own eyes dogged me for days after. I was addicted to CNN for weeks after the 11th, and no matter how many times or from how many angles it was shown, I still found it hard to swallow that this had actually happened. Knowing how many people work in those buildings, and the speed with which they collapsed, I had feared the final death toll would be in the tens of thousnads. Every single facet of the events of September 11th have become an obsession. It stems from my need to understand it all. I think however, that this will be one of those defining moments in history that will defy understanding forever. On Sep 11,2001 I had been getting ready for school(junior high) when Amy(a nice young christian woman who was one of my staff)came running out saying that the twin towers had been hit. I was so confused because I didn't even know what the twin towers were and what a big effect they had on the buisness world. All I knew was that they were those two towers that were part of the pretty New York scenery. So therefor I was even more confused because she was crying. It was obviouse to her that I was confused so she said "look" turning on the TV. I then saw that each tower had been hit by a plane. She explaned everthing to me and how the terrroristS had done this and how much the twin towers meant. I was then in shock and felt so sorry for the people in those buildings. I automatically said a mental prayer for the people involved. I prayed that God would take this into his hands and take care of all the people in the twin towers. I had hoped that the towers would not fall. Only a couple seconds later I felt as if a clowdy fog swirled into my heart and I melted inside. I hadn't so sad in such a while. I was sitting in my Journalism I class, and we just happened to turn on the T.V. right when the second building was being hit by the plane. The rest of the school had no idea yet what was going on. Everyone just stared in disbelief and in shock. No one thought it was real. I just couldn't believe that something like that could happen. It was just so hard to believe. Then I got scared, because I heard that the Pentagon was hit, and my Dad works at the Capitol, so I was worried that it was going to be hit next. I immediately tried to call my mother and my dad, but I couldn't get through to either of them. My mom ended up calling me at school a few minutes later and told me that my dad was fine. Then I thought about how I had prayed just the night before 9/11, saying how I wish that my generation had something to give them perspective, like a war. So I was horrified, because I thought that my prayers were answered in the worst way, and that it was some how also my fault. I felt extremely guilty and remorseful. I live near Dulles National Airport, one of the major airports in the D.C. area, so I can always see tons of planes really low getting ready to land. When air traffic resumed a couple days after 9/11, every time I saw a plane I got scared thinking that it was on its way to strike another building. I felt that way for months. I also just know what it is to be an American, and how incredible our country really is. It also just made appreciate life and all my loved ones, because like other families, I could lose them in an instant without notice. Also all the families that lost someone should be remembered. No one should forget what happened to our country and our people. I am a professional digital artist . I feel that my work tells a story of the pain we have all experienced since 9/11. "America the Beautiful" was created as I watched TV on that fateful morning. All the others have been my way of expressing my feelings. I have written commentary about each work. My son lives in NY. He was profoundly affected. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and no matter what terrible events there were, I always felt the future would be better but now I am not confident of that. I lived in relative safety. My husband represents pro bono ( he's a trial lawyer) several families who lost family members so I continually hear about their pain. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was late for school and I had heard people talking about about a plane crashing and i thought it was no big deal. I had spanish first period and when i walked in the class the first thing i looked at was the tv. On the tv was plane crashing into a building and at first i thought it was a movie that the teacher had put in. Then i realized it was the news and what i had heard was true. I couldnt believe it. Of course i thought the best and i thought that there was just a malfunction in the plane. When i found out that someone had hi-jaked the plane i was scared for all the people that were effected. While i was in 2nd period the 2nd plane hit the other tower and i was in shock. During 3rd period is when i found out the flight numbers and where the planes where coming and scheduled to go to. My dad was on a business trip at the time and i was scared that he was on one of the planes. I started crying and was able to call my dad to see if he was ok. He was and i thank god for that. But i still cried. I cried for all of the people who died and i cried for all of the peoples families. But the worst hadnt even started. When the towers fell i didnt know what to say. After school that day i went home and talked to my mom and family about what had happened. It wa scary and emotional. I had gotten a call from my best friend who said that her baby cousin and Aunt were on the 1st plane. She was hysterical and i didnt know what to tell her. i cried for her and tried to comfort her. The next day of school was a day for mourning. Everyone was still in shock and all we did in every class was talk about it and watch the news. We were all scared that there was more to come. It was a day that i will never forget and my heart goes out to all those who lost someone they loved. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have been a frequent flyer for 3 years because my parents live in different states. After Septemeber 11, i was scared to fly. Even though the security at te airports are tight, i am still to this day afraid that something is going to happen. I also am very dissapointed in the US government because we should have caught Osama and punished him for taking the lives of thousands of innocent people. Its not fair. I am also changed because i am always thining that something is going to happen. Especially tommorrow. A year from the disaster, and i am still scared and sad about what happened. I hope that nothing happens and i think i will always be kinda scared every time i fly. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the most important thing that should be remembered about Sept 11 are the lives that were lost. They were just innocent people trying to get some where and they had done nothing wrong. We should also remember that the US should be united at all times, not just in a time of crisis. It wasnt right what happened and i will forever remember the brave souls that tried to fight back, and the men and women who died trying to save us. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? No i didnt fly an american flag, because all of the stores where sold out. I was amazed at how many people were showing their pride and flying their flags high. I never hd a chance to but one, but i will definitly be flying one tommorrow, the 1 year rememberance.
