NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I am a 28 year old woman living in Houston, Texas on September 11, 2001. However, my younger sister, Susan Barnes, lives in New York City, and my parents, Dean and Barbara, went to visit her the weekend of September 8. We flew out of La Guardia on the evening of September 10 after being delayed for several hours. We got back into Houston very late that night, so I decided to work at home the next day. I woke up the next morning to a phone call from my grandmother, who told me a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I told ther that she had to mistaken and turned on the television. I ketp saying that I am sure that it must be a small Piper type plane. As we talked, I watched the second plane approach and hit the second tower live on TV. It was at this point that I thought something was terribly wrong. I felt anguish and physical sickness for those who were in the buildings and their families. MY sister and her boyfriend do not work in that area, so I knew that they were not immediately impacted. I called Susan at her office on Fifth Avenue, and she had already left. Her office had been evacuated and she and her co-workers watched the rest of the days' events unfold on the CBS This Morning Set which is on the ground floor of their building. People began calling us right and left, making sure my sister was okay. I told them that she was okay, and pray for the others who were not as fortunate. I held it together until I spoke to my mom, and we cried in fear for what may unfold in the next few hours. I was talking to my fiance when the towers fell, and assumed that now 25,000 to 30,000 people must be dead. It was the most physically exhausting day ever - especially because I spent it in bed watching television. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed a great deal, but not in comparison to those who lost loved ones in the tragedies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. I have a renewed sense of patriotism and love for my country. Being a member of Generation X, this is such a huge defining moment for us, which will tell our children about someday. I treasure my family and friends more and try to live each day to the fullest. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we should remember all of the everyday heroes that played a pivot role in the WTC towers, on the planes and in ways that we will never know about. It should stand as an example of our strength to overcome adversity and to continue to strive to live the free lives that others seem to hate around the world. Driving into my office parking lot, I heard Don Imus say that someone had just called in a plane that hit one of the towers. I figured it was a small private plane...but there was something in the announcers voices that made it seem more serious. I asked the receptionist to turn on her radio to keep tabs on it and about 10 minutes later she told me to get on the internet and check out what was happening. Someone brought a TV into the faculty lounge, so we could watch. The plane that hit in Pennslyvania scattered debris through Indian Lake, where I learned to waterski. We had great times up there. The President of the Institute sent out a message that campus was closed as of noon. I went to the Red Cross to give blood but the line was 4 hours long. I spent the rest of the day trying to find relatives and watching tv coverage. It took about 3 months for me to get back to a somewhat normal schedule of sleeping. Things from that very day like the passengers who grounded the plane in Pa, and the off duty cops and firemen who ran into the crumbling buldings to save people. With in days, WalMart was having them shipped by the thousands. I think that's nice. Even though I wasn't in New York City that day, I did feel the presence of what the people there were feeling. I was at work this day and one of my friends came in and told me that the WTC had been attacked. I quickly told my boss he needed to turn on the radio. The radio was on all day. Later, I found out about the Pentgon and Shanksville. After they listed the deceased in a magazine, I realized that there was someone I went to high school with who was on the list. I know people lost many lives and my heart and prayers go out quite often to them. May God be with all who helped including police, firemen and medical personnel and anyone else who helped. What I think should be remembered about September 11th is that there were many lives lost and those people did not die in vain. They were heroes in their own sense of the word. When I arrived at work that morning, the owner of the shop was already there, and the tv which was always on first thing in the morning....wasn't. The phone rang and it was the owners daughter calling from NJ. She couldn't believe that we didn't know. We put the tv on, and from that moment on, my life...my comfort...my sense of security...my constant sense of being protected from all the terrorism in world around me was gone. The World Trade Center, reports of the Pentagon being hit, and then a plane down in PA. I knew that my children's Father was flying, but I didn't know where he was. Our daughter called me from college in NH crying, but she was crying because he had called her to let her know that he was ok. I had a friend pick our son Tyler up from school and bring him to the flower shop.....just so I could hold him in my arms. The people who set out for just another day of work....the people who boarded airplanes that day and the courage that they had to face. The heros in so many different uniforms who climbed so high to save so many, and the citizens of NY who united in grief to help anyone they could. On September 12th of 2001 I put the American flag on the antenna of my car. It didn't survive our Vermont winter, but I bought a new one right away and it's been on my car since then. It's battered and torn, but it's still hanging on. It means so much to me. So many flags were flown from cars in the first year....and then they just stopped. My flag will always fly, and I will never forget the loss of one single life on September 11, 2001. He is always a happy amiling man and I thought he was setting up a joke! When he finished I realized what he had told me was NO JOKE! It was time for break so I went and watched the news and that is when I so the events unfold. I witnessed on the Today show the WTC towers on fire and saw them both collapsed. I was so devastated to think that this was unfolding before my eyes. Then I heard that they thought the Pentagon had been hit! I went back to the gym and shared all this information with my co-workers and my patients. We were all in shock and scared. We were leaving class when another teacher came in and told my teacher what had happened. When I got to my next class which was NJROTC (Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps), we watched the news to hear the story on what had happened. We turned off the TV and continued with class, so I didn't hear about the second plane. As I went through the rest of my school day none of my teachers let us watch TV, so I didn't hear anything else. When I got to my Social Studies class I remembered that my dad was flying to Washington D.C. that morning. I hadn't heard where the flights started, so I didn't know if he was one of those flights. So when I got home I watched the news and I heard that another plane had hit the second tower and they collapsed. I also heard that another plane hit the Pentagon and one crashed in Pennsylvania. I woke up at about 6:30 a.m. Getting dressed I heard my mom yelling, and trying to get a hold of my auntie that lives in New York. She lives by the World Trade Center. So while my mom was trying to get a hold of my auntie Pam, I was getting dress and I still didn't know what was going on, until my called me in her room. She sounded so scared, but she told me what happened and she told me to watch the news with her. When she turned the channels that's all it was on America was Attacked. So while I was leaving the house to go to school, that's all I was thinking about. How could someone ever do the most horrifying thing to people? That's all that was running through my head. Just thinking about how many people died or how many people were jumping off the building. Just thinking about other people families and friends were on the plane or in the World Trade Center. During that time, I was taking 3 buses to get to school and didn't listen to any media sources while preparing for the day. My first bus transfer was at the LAX bus stop. When I got onto the second bus, a fellow passenger had her walkman on and was saying that planes had crashed into WTC and the Pentagon. When I heard the news, I was scared, since I knew the Pentagon was well-protected (so I thought). During the rest of the day, I checked the internet for updated news. Whenever I go out of my hometown, I always make sure my family and close friends know my complete itinerary. This includes my travel plans to and from the airport. Before, I wouldn't be detailed. All the people who died that day should be remembered. They were innocent victims, especially the children. They did not deserve to die by doing their normal routines. All of a sudden, the teacher's aid, who had just left a few moments before, came tearing back into the room yelling something about a plane crashing into the world trade center and to turn the television on. The images that began popping up on the screen were unbelievable. At first we thought it was just some freak accident, then we saw another plane crashing into the towers. That's when I first realized this was something more than just an ordinary plane crash, much more. The buildings were on fire when the bell rang, and we all rushed to our next class to watch the news. By the time I arrived, the first tower had already collapsed. My English teacher was trying to explain to us the severity of what was happening, but she still wasn't even sure what was going on. Then reports about Washington D.C. being attacked started broadcasting over the news, and then I became very scared. I remember thinking of all the wars I've learned about and how awful they were, and then thinking "Oh God, this is going to happen to me, in my lifetime.. my friends are going to have to go to war.." When I went home that day after school, it felt like I was going back to a completely different place than the one I had just left that morning. Because of September 11th, I have been more aware of everything that's been going on. I am also very nervous about my family flying. We are a very strong, united nation, but we should never just depend on that alone. Because of September 11th, we have learned that we can be attacked, that people can hurt us. I came into his apartment just after the first plane hit. I could not believe what I saw and at first thought it was just an accident. After I dropped him off I stopped at Mcdonalds for breakfast. Their Tv's were on and just as I came in the second plane hit. People in the restuarant workers as well as customers were in shock. Some were close to tears. I left there and went to a local library. I had to wait for a few minutes for it to open. When the librarian came to the door she told us that the Pentagon had been hit and that the news people were not sure how many planes had been hijacked. I went home and turned on the TV just as the first building fell. The phone rang then and my husbands boss told him not to come to work because they were sending everyone home. I live in Southern CA, and was asleep when I recieved a phone call from my Mom who lives in Southern Utah. She told me to go turn on the tv.... I did. Nothing prepared me for what I saw. I just tuned in when the second plane hit one of the WTC towers... and then they switched over to the Pentagon. I remember screaming.. Oh My God...and my husband came downstairs to see what had happened. We both were dumbstruck! My Mom was in hysterics and was crying. We spent the day watching, watching people from NYC and DC and the reports of another plane heading towards DC... We cried and cried. As we were watching, the towers fell. My husband and I held onto each other and cried. I went outside to get the mail later on in the day..there was an eery silence. I heard no planes flying over head. Our Neighbors were dazed as we were. We were stunned that such vile persons could cause such terrible acts of murder with people in planes and crashing into buildings with people in them. How could this be? That week we walked around as if in a daze. All I remember is crying alot and feeling anger and pain. Many of our family members called each other to make sure everyone was ok. I had a brother flying into Florida..his flight was grounded. I had a brother that had friends that worked in Downtown Manhattan and we were all worried that they were hurt. I will always expect the unexpected now, I am not as trusting. I don't like to fly, but I will if I have to. I won't hide from life because of this, on the contrary.. I am angry. Before I was in a very complacent mode. We were the Mighty USA... and we still are...but I feel it necessary to protect ourselves even if we stand alone. I have never felt so strong about our Nation. What I have learned from 9/11 is that you can't hide from life no matter how scary things can get.... you must live and live your life like it is the last day. I think we should remember all of those that helped in times of need. The Paramedics, the Firemen, The Policemen...all those behind the scenes as well. I will never forget the moment we had learned what happened. At about 9:15 a.m., our Principal came over the speaker and told us to turn on the TV. My first thought was there was some program on that he wanted us to watch that would take away from our instructional time. But when we turn on TV and saw what had happened, then I knew that this was something unique and terrible. The kids were stunned and began to cry. I didn't know what to feel. To be honest, I just felt so angry at whoever would be responsible for this. I threw my books down and my students and I just sat there, together, and at that point that was all that mattered. I lost my brother John Robinson Lenoir. (Rob) He work on the 104th floor of the 2nd tower. He left behind a Wife and two Kids.Ages 13and12 a boy and a girl. I heard my grandmother crying to herself while watching the news on television. She had just heard that two planes had just crashed. I remember coming back to my locker after 1st period and my friend told me that the World Trade Centers were hit. I had no idea what he was talking about. I really didn't know what the twin towers were and how big and powerful they were. I first thought that it was a bomb. I really didn't know what happened until the last period of the day. I watched no T.V. until the last period. I remember then coming home and turning on the T.V. and I was shocked that every channel was the news and I now knew how big this had been. I now know that everybody is sensitive because I saw professinal football players, and pro athletes for that matter, who were in tears because of this horrible day. I haven't stopped my life beacuse of this because I think that that is all we need is to just keep our minds on our country and not our enemies. I think that almost everything should be remember from the airport security failures to the firefighters and polices officers bravery. I think that all this could have been avoided if the airport security would have checked all the people getting on the plane. Everybody only talks about other peoples faults in the 9/11 attack. A city I dreamt to visit and experience since the age of 15. It took me 15 years to get there. Why? Because I was affraid of flying. I summed up all of my courage and was set to celebrate my 30th in my dream city, Manhatten, NY. I arrived in New York at JFK international airport on September 10th at 6:30pm with my partner (whom had visited NYC 3 times) . We took a yellow taxi into the city. Crossing over the Queensboro Bridge into Manhatten I saw the Twin Towers in the distance. I was so excited. I knew I had finally made it to New York City. In my excitement I pleaded with my partner to give me the video camera. Much to my surprize my partner turned to me and said, "We're here for two weeks. You can take footage tomorrow when it's daylight." With disappointment I gazed into the distance and marvelled at their beauty as they twinkled amoungst the NYC skyline, standing strong and mighty. The following morning I awoke to the sounds of sirens, thinking it was just a typical day in NYC. Boy, was I wrong. My dream holiday, favourite landmark and 30th birthday had turned into a living nightmare. I saw nothing of what I wanted to see and exprience. I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress. I was unable to express what I felt and experienced to anyone. I avoided the city and became anti-social. I wasn't coping with my job and became extremely angry with the world. In June 2002 I had enough of life and gave up all hope in living and left my job. I kept to myself and avoid outside contact. For the first time in my life I had turned to drugs and alcohol and was on a downhill spiral fast. In May 2003 I crashed and suffered a nervous breakdown.
