I'm from Monmouth County, NJ but I now live and teach in Georgia. On Sept. 11, 2001, our second period class had just begun. Another teacher called me out and told me that a plane had just flown into the WTC. I thought he was just messing with me. I put the tv on and a few minutes later I, along with my 26 senior students, witnessed the second plane crash into the second tower. Shortly after, a report came in from Washington, DC regarding smoke coming from the Pentagon and we soon knew that a third plane had been used to hit a structure. It was at that moment I had to sit, thinking of my own family and friends when one of my senior students asked, "Ms. Pagano, are we at war?" Of all of the things a high school teacher sees and hears each day, that had to be the toughest moment of my career. How do you answer that question to a classroom full of young adults, scared and in disbelief when you can't even comprehend it yourself? I'll never forget that moment, I'll never forget that question. God bless all the families that lost loved ones on that day. God bless my students as we will always be connected by that fateful day. There are many things i will always remember, and one of them is how I found out. It was bus evacuation day at school. While I was on the bus, the bus driver said, "You know, you should really be paying attention. the people in new York are using the same safty procedures your learning about now." When we asked him what he meant, he said that a plane crashed into the World trade centers. No one believed, and that was partly because no one knew what the World Trade Centers were. When we went back in side, all the teachers were crying. An anouncement was made that they shouldn't turn on the TV's. When I went to the band room, the TV was on, and I found out that what the bus driver said was true. I was woken by my phone at about 10.45pm from a friend who said to quickly turn on your tv, New York was being attacked. When i saw what was happening I was so shocked and wasnt fully understanding what had happend. Living in Australia I wasnt directley affected, but I was there nearly a year ago from that at the world trade centre, holidaying in NYC. And i knew of others that were travelling there for holidays or work.I woke my mum up and told her as i was crying what was happening. We sat up for the next 3hrs sitting there in disbeliefe. It was so upsetting seeing what was happening and knowing what the damage and loss of life there was going to be. Because i had been in the WTC, the year before. Not only was it terrible that the buildings and planes and collided but those other helpless people on the flights that crashed in to P.A and the Pentagon. And just knowing that these people knew they were going to die or that there wasnt much they could do to save them selves. That is the one of the most sadest things that will stay with me forever. And now everytime i hear a plane fly over i cringe and think back to that devestating day. My heart goes out to all the victims and loved ones lives who had there lives taken so terribly, and that i pray for you everyday that you have the strength to go on and live your lives to the fullest, beacuse you really never know what tomorow will bring.... As I was bombarded with constant information I found myself trying to put into words what I was feeling. What follows is my attempt to do just that. If you are like me you have spent the last week with many thoughts and images going through your mind. Through it all there have been some over riding themes that seem to always come through. First I have to admit that I am depressed. This I believe is from the grieving that accompanies a death. In this case it is a death of innocence along with the overwhelming destruction of people. I shouldnt be surprised, like the rest of us I have been denying what was probably inevitable. Any time you allow people to be disenfranchised they are going to be easily lead. Just look on our own shores to the gangs and cults. When people feel they will not be able to better themselves they are then victim to those who would use their hopelessness to their own ends. They also prey on the feelings of uselessness and anger at not being able to climb from the dregs. I also feel that those responsible need to be held accountable for their actions and also those who would aid in such an act. However the testosterone rhetoric only fans the flames and does not allow for thoughtful action. This act of terrorism was about the United States and yet it was not. We are the ones who are most visible and seem to have the most. If it were another country that was at the forefront then they would have been the targets. I am also not sure that war is the answer. We as a people are being asked to act on emotion and not logic. We are being asked to answer a call when we really need to grieve. Yet we also need to take action. This more than anything seems to point to the issue being more complex than we want to accept. As an instantaneous society we want immediate results. That is not a reality and really never has been. To get the best results takes time and we are not in a position to allow that, or are not willing to take the steps to allow that. Throughout history havent we learned that violence only breeds violence? We always say the war to end all wars, but we still allow people to starve, not only for food, but freedom, human rights and health. The American people are a proud and strong people. We are also loving and forgiving. Just now, I am afraid that we are looking to the first at the cost of the second. If as we say we are a God fearing people then we should remember to love your neighbor as yourself. As a child said, if God is the same with just different names then how does he choose whom to support? My answer would be God does not choose, but we make the choice. I hope in my heart that we make the right one for we will live with that choice for generations to come just as we have lived with those choices made by those who came before us. Like everyone else I wish I had all the right answers. This also contributes to the feelings of pressure and depression. May we think intelligently and rightly! May we come through this even stronger and more determined to eradicate the seeds that lead to people feeling they have no hope all over this planet. When I first got to school, I heard something about the World Trade Center being attacked and at first I didn't believe it. Then I went to my teacher's room and watched the second plane hit the South Tower. Then the Towers collapsed. Classes had barely begun, and I was looking forward to my new Tuesday schedule. When my clock radio, set to a country music station, began sounding what sounded like news coverage, I knew something was wrong. I heard something about a crash at the World Trade Center, but I did not understand the event's severity . Hurrying to my workplace before class, I gathered more snatches of the story from others in the office. The University had cancelled its classes (the University never cancels classes). The secretary likened the event to Pearl Harbor. My immediate worry was that we would go to war. The office did not have a television nor radio, so I headed to lecture anyway. The professor was standing with a small group of students, discussing what was happening. Yearning for news, I left to the computer lab to read CNN.com. I stared at the monitor for about an hour, absolutely shocked. I read as much as I could find, and watched the stomach-turning video footage of the crash. I sent an email to my friend who goes to college in the Bronx. My mind was filled with concern for our country and my male friends who would be eligible for a draft. I realized that I loved them. Feeling very alone, I walked back to my apartment. I quietly, continuously, and tearfully prayed for Mary's protection as I walked. Once home, I called my mother to ask about our relatives in New York and Pennsylvania. The news had simply said a plane crashed near Pittsburgh, and we have family out there. I joined my housemates in watching the television coverage. I may have had a schoolbook nearby me, under the pretense of studying, but I could not concentrate. They showed the crashes again and again. Within an hour my best friend came over too. It was good to have him around for comfort. He and I had already planned on having dinner that night, and we did not change those plans. We ate at a nearby Irish restaurant, then we headed into campus. I had seen impromptu flyers advertising a University-community candlelight vigil on the Diag, our campus gathering place. With candles lit and flags flying, some people led an spontaneous Pledge of Allegiance. The vigil was student-organized with a number of leaders representing multiple belief systems speaking to the group. Catholic, Jew, Muslim, Protestant, atheist... we were all unified during those moments. Emotions ran strong but I would not be able to cry for days. The next day, classes were in session. Most of mine were simply discussions about the recent events. My political science professor lectured on the use of terrorism as a political mechanism; this was not on the syllabus but good to learn. I ate lunch outside with my best friend and was terrified to see fighter jets fly over campus; I had thought all airtraffic was outlawed. The way I witnessed September 11th, was in my 3rd period Advanced Internet class, I had just sat down because it was the end of the period, and my friend came in and told me that a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center, honestly at the time I didnt know what the World Trade Center was, just heard of it several times. It was the our second week in school when our principle came into our classroom and asked our teacher to go out into our resource area. Since our resource area has windows and I could see that all of the teachers were out there I knew that something was going on. When our teacher came back into the room the first thing that he did was tell everyone to be quite and watch what is going on, on the T.V. No one knew what was going on besides the fact that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Pretty much all that we did the rest of that day was watch the T.V. and try to understand what was going on. I was thankful for my teachers, because they were all understanding that we were confused. I feel that I am lucky that I live in Minnesota and just have to see the pictures and not have to see the real thing; because I know that that would be so much harder. I do not just mean that fire fighters, and the policeman; I mean the citizens that got out and helped others that were hurt get out. I think that it is the right think to do becuase such a tragic event has happened, and I think that it shows that we care and that we are proud to live in America! The second period gym class was outside on the track, there was an old man running that morning on the track also. He had a radio headset on and was listening to the news, towards the end of the period he stopped and told a few students the news that had just broke over the news. It was almost immediatly after everyone knew what had just happened. Everyone was unsure of what exactly was happening and what the story was. When i went into orchestra (third period) our conductor had the TV, we all watched silently. Nobody changed classes, it was the same scene in each classroom. Sometimes people would discuss what was happening in small groups asking why, how, what else, and what's next. It was hard to comprehend disaster on such a large scale, we live in a small town of about four thousand. For the rest of the day all i can remember is the scary silence of downtown and the neighborhoods, everyone was glued to the their telelvisions. I am more aware of what is happening in the news and in current events. Patriotism has made a huge comeback. In some cases people take their patriotism to extremes, but for the most part it is positive. One incident when i was affected was when i wanted to change a plan ticket with my mom and i couldn't, not a big deal but an increase in airport security is noticable. I was late to work that day and caught a cab on 8th Avenue in Chelsea (about 3 miles from the Trade Center) to midtown. When I got in the cab the driver was hysterical, practically in tears. "The towers, they blew up the towers!" he kept saying. I couldn't believe it. Then we crossed 6th Avenue and I could see all the way downtown to the Trade Center -- both towers were on fire and the clouds in the sky were enormous. People were in the streets and traffic was practically stopped. Eventually we got to my office on 41st Street. By that time the Pentagon had been hit and people were really scared. We were all silent, no one knew what to say or to do. A woman I work with was listening to the radio and told us that one of the towers had fallen. It was unbelievable. At that point, we were told by security to evacuate. Since our building was 40 stories tall and right near the Chrysler building and Grand Central station we thought we might get it. I remember someone saying, "they're knocking down tall buildings." None of our managers were there that day so we spontaneously started organizing plans to get out -- the city had been sealed by that point so many could not get home. I was lucky and could walk home. We all left after the second tower fell and, by that point, there were millions of people in the streets of the city. I walked the 30 blocks home down 5th Avenue and saw hundreds of thousands of people marching uptown to get out of the city. Some were covered in ash and must've walked from Ground Zero. It was very quiet. Some people had their car radios on and groups of people would crowd around to hear what was happening. I remember I was afraid that the terrorists would bomb the power grid and shut off power in the city. When I got home I tried to call family but long distance lines were out. I bought food because I thought there might be a panic run on the stores. Eventually, I met up with a friend and we watched the events unfold on TV. He lives closer to the Trade Center than me and, for days, he had to show ID at a police checkpoint before he could get back to his house. Fire trucks and ambulances ran up and down the street all night and there was a strong smell of smoke everywhere you went. For days after, we would be evacuated from our office because of bomb threats. I still think twice about taking the subway in case something happened and I was trapped underground. Every day I look downtown and see the gap in the sky where the towers were. I still work near the Chrysler building and see the Empire State building near by and think that they could be destroyed, too. Everything seems less permanent, now. I got into work on September 11, 2001 hearing on the local radio that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I thought to myself that it must be a small one or two man plane and kept on working. Then the radio announcer interupted a song to say another plane crashed into the World Trade Center and they were passanger planes. I was in disbelief! I immediatley tried to find any information I could on the internet. I had a very hard time getting onto the news web sites because there was too much traffic on those sites. I finally got onto CNN.com. For the rest of the day I watched CNN on the internet. I saw the collapse of both towers live. It was so heartbreaking because I knew at that moment so many people just died. When I got home that night I hugged my girls and watched the news solid for the rest of the day & following week. I knew right away nothing would ever be the same again. The reality of what happened did not honestly hit me until I saw ground zero for myself. The towers of NYC were gone...along with over 2,000 lives. I'll never forget what it felt like to see it after everything was cleared away and all that was left was silence.
