I had decided to stay home from school that day because I was sick. My mother called me around nine a.m. Her voice was very shrill as she proceeded to say "turn on the tv, our country is under attack!" I will never forget my mother's voice or the horror I felt as I turned on the television. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed alot since September 11th, 2001. It makes me feel stronger and I appreciate the concept of freedom alot more. If September 11th was not enough to bare, a week later on September 18th four boys from my school were in a car accident, two of them died. We all were very close. The events of September really put into perspective how much I value my life. Now I go on living each day to the fullest, as well as keeping those that we lost in September of last year in my heart, always. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that we should remember all of the innocent people that died on September 11th. We should also remember all of the firefighters, police, and good samaritains that simply risked their lives to help others, they are truly heros in my eyes. It wasn't just something I pledged to every morning, it was something that signified strenght and freedom. It made me proud to be an American. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001, dawned brilliant and clear in Columbia, Missouri. I was in the fourth week of my junior year at the University of Missouri, and we had just started the seemingly interminable stretch of the semester between Labor Day and Thanksgiving break. I had gotten up early - probably about 7:20 Central time - to go running. When I got up, though, I thought, "Man, I should have gotten up earlier. It's so nice that the campus rec center's going to be crowded." I turned on NPR to listen to the news as I put my contacts in, washed my face, and got dressed to go run. At the half-hour news break, the reader announced that a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Details would follow as they came in. My initial thoughts were that it must be a small plane, like a Cessna, and that it must be a really crappy day weather-wise in New York. Because, really, how do you run a plane into the World Trade Center? I hoped that there weren't any deaths or serious injuries, and kept getting ready. A few minutes later, though, I knew that something must be REALLY wrong. A long piece had started - one that would normally run about 3-5 minutes on Morning Edition - and Bob Edwards cut it off and started explaining what was going on in New York. In six years of listening to NPR, I had never heard them cut into a story. It was a big plane that had hit one of the towers - maybe even a passenger jet. That's when I gave up getting ready and turned on the TV. I turned it to CNN, then to MSNBC. No one knew quite what was going on yet, so I watched in confusion as a news helicopter panned the scene overlooking the Hudson River from just in front of and above the Trade Center. And I was stunned and horrified a couple minutes later as a blur crossed from the right side of my screen and a huge orange and black fireball erupted from the other tower. I was working as a peer advisor in a residence hall, a kind of RA position. I didn't know what to do - should I wake up my residents? Should I go to the lounge and turn on the TV? I decided to try and find another staff member to talk to, so I signed on to an internet messaging program and caught another PA. She had no idea what was happening, and she didn't know what to say when she turned on her TV. She thought that people were gathering in their floor's lounge, and told me that I was welcome to come up and watch. (I ended up joining them and watching with others as the towers collapsed - we all felt so numb and helpless, and we had no way of knowing that although many died, many, many others had made it out safely.) Before I went up to the other floor, though, I remembered that both of my best friend's brothers lived in Manhattan. I thought she had probably left for her 8 AM class, so I sent her a quick e-mail: "Gwynne - are your brothers all right?" She hadn't left, though, and I got a quick response: "I think so - why?" That was followed a few minutes later by this: "HOLY SHIT!!!! I have no idea - I can't get through!" (Thankfully, both of her brothers made it okay.) As the news poured in from NYC, Washington D.C., and then Pennsylvania, I remember wondering if this was the end of the world. I went to my 12:30 class in a daze, listening to the NPR coverage on my Walkman's radio. My psychology professor was shaken - she and her sons had just gotten back from New York, and when she picked up her roll of film from vacation that morning, there were pictures of them on the World Trade Center's observation deck. I spent a lot of time curled up on my bottom bunk watching MSNBC and talking with friends. We wondered if this would spark a draft, and if our friends, brothers, boyfriends, and fiancés would go to war. Would our friends and relatives in the National Guard and reserves be called up? Especially that first night, the 11th-12th, I kept NPR on and laid awake in the top bunk, and wondered if that day's events had been it, or if there would be more to come. I don't think I slept. If anything, I spend more time enjoying the little things, and talking with friends and family members. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? How it touched the normal citizens in their day-to-day routines - it wasn't the soldiers from Pearl Harbor, nor the President, nor the astronauts from the Challenger. It was people like us - young, interns, newly graduated, visiting relatives. And it was people like our parents - brokers, salespeople, business travelers, with families. I did put a flag in my window, but took it down after Thanksgiving break because it was so faded. After September 11th, like so many others, I have a definite appreciation for all that the flag stands for. However, I think that it's been exploited in some instances as an easy way to make money in the post-September 11th boom of patriotism. In its heightened symbolism, I think that it has also served as an object that can really drive the "you're either with us or against us" wedge further into the country. I don't know why, but I feel really uneasy about states, including Missouri, that have mandated saying the Pledge of Allegiance in schools. If you don't stand up and say the Pledge with gusto, are you non-patriotic? Or if you don't believe in _everything_ that the Pledge says, does that make you non-patriotic as well? The events of September 11th have definitely made me reconsider what traditional American symbols say to the rest of the world, and what being an American means. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I first heard about the terrorist attacks in my highschool chemistry class. We were just finishing up a lab assignment when our principal came over the intercom to tell us the horrific news. After his speech, he released us early to second period, knowing that it would take longer than usuall to get there. We sat in the room in total silence, watching the reports come flooding in. I was just returning from the bathroom wen the second tower fell. My heart fell with it, even though I was hundreds of miles away in Kentucky. I went to school and it was an ordinary day until 8:50 when my teacher turned on the TV and we watched the replay of the first attack. Then we kept watching until the other plane hit. Studies at Emporia High School. My partner Dustin S. and I were working on a project that has to do with putting out a candle with sand. All of the sudden Mr. Wyrick came running in the room holding a TV in his hands. He told us to come over there and we watched the two planes crash into the World Trade Center one after another. I took the train from Albany to NYC on the morning of September 11th for a meeting at our NYC Office at One Penn Plaza. As soon as I got off the train and arrived at our office I knew something was wrong because everyone was outside and on cell phones. I asked someone if the building had been evacuated and they said that a plane had crashed into the WTC. If I looked South, I could see a lot of black smoke contrasting with the brilliant blue late summer sky. At about 9:30 am we went inside One Penn Plaza and were told that it was safe to be inside the building. We had no access to TV or radio, so my co-workers and I really didn't know much of the details of what was going on. In the conference room where our meeting was to take place, the big picture window looked out on the World Trade Center Towers. It was horrible to see the black smoke pouring out. I was able to call my husband back home in Albany and he told me that it was a terrorist attack and that the Pentagon had also been attacked. As people started coming into the meeting, we heard all kinds of stories from those who were coming from lower Manhattan. One women was in tears as she described see people falling from the Towers. A decision was made that our meeting could not happen given the situation in Manhattan. At about 10:15 the entire Penn Plaza complex was evacuated. We were back out in the streets, trying to decide what to do and not knowing if there would be further attacks on Manhattan. We decided to try to take the train back to Albany, so we went underground into Penn Station. From the TV's in some of the stores we watched as the Towers collapsed. At that point Penn Station was also evacuated and we were back out on the street. We walked to a restaurant and were welcomed in to watch the TV coverage. People were very quiet and were in shock at the events that were happening around us. My children were in school and knew that I had gone to NYC that day. My son wrote this poem in his 9th grade English class: I woke up that morning To a day that would end in mourning It started at around 9 o'clock It was a huge shock I can only wonder why I can only wonder how To justify The slaughtering of innocent people The carefully planned plot Makes me ask what Could possess someone To take so many lives I still can't believe it was done Maybe religion Or pure hatred Now they are all dead It's just an advertisement A very expensive commercial They were giving us a message Whatever happened to the radio An eye for an eye A tooth for a tooth A life for a life A massacre for a massacre Now they are all dead and gone And all I have to say Is it was the day The towers went away. When you work in a school of about three hundred or so, young children you want to protect (mother) each and everyone of then from the evils in the world. On September 11, 2001, that task became impossible. Approximately 9 oclock AM on September 11, I went into our school copy room. I was given the horrible news. A plane crashed into the World Trade Center. It did not sink in until Kate told me twice. At first I thought, How could a pilot not see those huge buildings but then reality set in. It was not an accident! What do we tell the children? How can we explain to them that someone had that much hate in their hearts that they would kill so many innocent Americans. With our principles direction we did not speak of the cowardly and horrific act of violence. We wanted the children to have the last few hour of school to be as normal as possible because from that moment on things just would not be the same for anyone. We asked parents that came to help with lunch just not to talk about it in front of the younger children. The word of the tragedy had already started to circle around the second floor (older children). At dismissal, you could see on the faces of the moms and dads coming for their children that the world just would not be the same anymore. In month to come, I felt having an 11-year-old son (Robbie) and a 9-year-old daughter (Catie) that it was my job to help them to understand want had happened on that day. Over Easter break my sister and I took them to Ground Zone. Not sure that I was doing the right thing I was very apprehensive, until Catie saw a small beanie baby someone had left in memory of a lost loved one. She said, Mommy look people left a beanie baby to remember somebody lost. Right then I knew I did the right thing. She felt the lost that all Americans were feeling. Robbie noticed that people as far away as California sent big banners of prayers and love. To this day when we talk about what happened in New York City and in Washington, he will say, dont forget the people on the plane in Pennsylvania. He always remembers them. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I work for the Killeen Independent School District in Killeen Texas, we are right next to Ft. Hood (the largest military base in the world). There are 7 schools on or directly around the Army base out of our total of 43 campuses. Our office opens at 7am and we reported in for work just like any other day. A friend of mine who lives up in Maryland messaged me that a plane had struck one of the WTC's. I went directly to CNN.com and saw the initial photo's. We all thought at first it was just some horrific accident. She proceeded to get ready for work but came back a few minutes later to tell me another plane had struck another tower. I knew then that it was no accident, I come for a long line of military tradition, serving a little over 5 years in the U.S. Air Force myself. I tried once again to get on CNN.com to see what was going on but net congestion was just too much. I couldn't pull up any information from the net. The Plant Services Director came in and got us a TV so we can follow the events of what was going on. It affected our school distract very profoundly. I had 2 brothers still active and knew the chances of them being deployed were great. I was torn between feeling glad or sad knowing I couldn't be recalled back into active duty. But it has made me aware that there is more to the world then my own little life, it's broaden my horizon in the knowledge that I can't always hide the worlds troubles in pretending to ignore it. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The lives that were lost, the children who never got the chance to grow up. The fathers or soon to be fathers who left to go to work or about their daily lives while leaving their pregnant wives at home. And the fact how the whole nation, yes even I dare say the world, as come together in this tragic experience. The hero's in the air and on the ground. My four year old son and I were watching television when a news bulletin came over the screen. There was chaos everywhere. People running for their lives as dust particles came from one of our World Trade Centers. I couldn't believe my eyes. The United States was under attack. My son just looked at the television and said, "Wow", as another plane came crashing into the other World Trade Center. Fear was in my eyes as I ran outside to look toward the sky. Our home was right over aviation to RDU Airport. There was a silence in the air that I had never witnessed since my residency there. All planes in the US had been landed. Still in denial, I returned inside my home to watch more on the news. Then all of a sudden, there were two more crashes. One at the Pentagon and another in Pennsyvania. All my security levels had disappeared. I had never been so scared in all my life. And then as the news was broadcasting the event, the first Trade Center hit came crashing to the ground. People in New York City were frantic. Rescue members, ambulances, and firemen were there to rescue as many as they could. There were people who could not escape that were hanging out the windows and jumping to their deaths. The heat from the fully fueled aircrafts was so tremendous that it melted the Trade Center support structure which brought the Trade Center crashing the a sand castle. Over 3,000 innnocent people were killed that day and our security forces and our President responded accordingly. To prevent more attacks, the airplanes were landed and Homeland Security was established. 15 out of 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and the Muslims still do not understand why Americans do not trust them. I am not accusing all Muslims, I'm just saying that we are a little wiery of them now. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I went back to school and will be graduating December 18th, 2004 with an Information Systems degree and plan on to continue my education farther. It has gave an interest at helping my government as much as I can with the security of our Nation and for my children. I have a continued an interest in the search for Osama bin Ladin and the Reform that Saudi Arabia is taking to make sure that the right teachings of Islam are being taught in their schools. America sees these attacks as a "call for help" from the scholars and young Saudis men alike. I have been talking with female activist in the Kingdom and are making suggestions that would help assist the men in Saudi Arabia that does not go against the Islam beliefs and customs. To my discovery, Saudi men have been translating the Islam to benefit their needs and cover their insecurities just like Osama bin Ladin. Youth Groups for the children, better environmental issues such as sewage running in the streets, Parks and Recreational Centers. Women being able to participate in the Elections. Women being allowed to Work. All these things will take some of the pressure off the men if they would let their women work and help. That is what women are good at. HELPING OUT! It is also comforting that the government has realized these issue too and with the surplus that they have made with the increase in Oil Prices, instead of building another Palace for the Kings and Princes, it is time to fix the problems that are making the citizens living there so miserable. At the time, I already heard from other students about what happened but everything was confirmed when my teacher turned on the T.V. for all of us to watch. I am a firefighter/paramedic in St. Louis County, Missouri, and I was finishing my shift on the morning of Sept. 11th and as we were sitting around the table at shift change talking when the news began to come in, and at first everyone thought it was a horrible accident. As soon as the second plane hit the Towers we knew instantly this was no accident. I will never forget the horrible crushing feeling that grew with each passing update as we witnessed the unfolding events together. There was a fire alarm call and the on duty crew responded and by the time they got back, the Pentagon information was coming in, and we wondered how much more would happen. There were reports of unknown numbers of missing and possibly hijacked planes and every plane in US airspace being ordered grounded and I remember that I could not tear myself away from the tv at work for about 4 hours, even though my shift was over. I had to call and tell my wife and children that were at home that I loved them. I finally drove home and when I got home I struggled all day with the urge to go and get my kids at school just to bring them home and hold them. At home we learned of the plane that went down in Pennsylvania and we watched tv the rest of the day and late into the night hoping they would find survivors, hoping nothing else would happen, hoping reports would come in that it wasn't as bad as first thought. I vividly remember first feeling sorrow, then horror, then disbelief, and then lastly fear. How could this happen in the United States? When would it end? Would we ever feel safe again? As a firefighter we have all noticed a big increase in appreciation and attention, and often feel humbled by the kind words and actions of our fellow Americans. I am a Gulf War veteran and I flew a flag prior to Sept. 11th and I have always had a strong American pride. I have always wondered why there was seemingly a decline in national pride prior to Sept. 11th. After Sept. 11th I was glad there was an increase in flag flying and patriotism, I just wish it had not taken an event like this to bring it to the surface. I had just signed onto the internet when I saw a picture that didn't even look real. It took a few moments for the reality of what I was looking at to sink in. I just sat there with my mouth hanging open and then I just started to cry and say "Oh God no!" over and over. I grabbed my girls and just held them so tightly. I wanted my other two kids home with me. I felt so very far away from them. When the buildings collapsed I began to pace and cry. I really wanted my kids home with me. I couldn't call my husband because he is a landscaper and doesn't have a cell phone. I felt so disconnected. In the days that followed, I remember thinking how quiet the skies were. It was eerie. I live just a short distance from Logan Airport and have become so accustomed to hearing planes pass overhead in an almost constant stream. It really was strange having no planes in the sky. I recall on a couple of occassions when military planes passed, they were sooo loud and it was very scary. One night we were on our way home and there was people holding candles all along the streets. They were everywhere. When we got home we went out with ours and the other people in our building came out too. There was such a sense of pulling together. It wasn't until my dad came to the house and asked me to check on two passengers of Flight 11 that I realized who they were. N. Janis Lasden and Donald Ditulio were friends of my dad and myself. We knew them from country dancing. We saw each other quite often and Janis and I shared a love of needlework. I think of her and Don all the time. I pray their loved ones find comfort, as well as all those who lost loved ones. May God richly bless your future as we grow stronger as a nation. I turn on the news to see if anything else has happened. I broke out in pride for the Red, White and Blue. I wear flag adorned clothing, shoes, pocketbook, backpacks, watch etc. I think about Janis and Don everytime I hear country music. I make sure I hug my kids several times a day. I put flags on the car, on the carriages, on my pocketbook, on my fingernails. If I could find a way to put a flag on something, I did. Prior to 9-11-01 I didn't think about the flag much. I respected it as a symbol of our country, pledged allegiance (didn't really feel allegiance but said the pledge anyway) Now I feel an incredible allegiance not only to the flag but the freedom of our country and those who have fought for that freedom. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11, 2001 my husband and I were to board a plane to St. Louis Missouri. Our 18 yr old son was to graduate U.S Army basic training on September 13, 2001 and we wanted to attend the parents reception on the 12th. Our flight was to leave San Diego Internation airport at around 10:30am. My husband woke me earlier than usual, I was up at right around 5:45am. As I usually do, I turned on the local ABC station to watch the news and then some of Good Morning America. I was having trouble processing why it appeared to be a movie on instead of the local news. When I saw the picture of the plane hitting the first tower, I did not understand what was happening. Then the live picture of the plane hitting tower two came on and I understood that this was all too real. Our youngest son, Stephen, who was 9 at the time had come in and he asked me why I was crying. I tried to explain why, but I wasn't doing a very good job. Then he watched the replay of the planes hitting the towers and he began to understand that something really bad was happening. He watched with me until 7:45am when his father took him on to school. By now I knew that we would not be traveling to St. Louis that day. Peter Jennings had announced that the airports had been closed accross the entire nation and that all flights had been called out of the sky. My first thought was "No one is going to keep me from seeing my son graduate basic!" I called Southwest Airlines and actually got through to a ticketing agent and asked when flights would be back in the air. She told me then not to count on going out that day but maybe by the next afternoon. I would have to just keep calling. I then called my travel agent and told my husband that I would go into work, I needed to be doing something and away from the TV coverage. I did miss my son's graduation from basic. It was just too far to drive and the commander of the base had asked that parents not try to make the trip. My son in the Army became very determined that he had chosen the correct life path. We talked for a long time that night. I appologized over and over again that we could not make his graduation. Our youngest son had many worries about his older brother for a long time. He has always been proud of his brother and that he is part of what fights anyone who would try to hurt America. Our daughter, who was away at a preforming arts college took in the picture of her brother in his uniform and many of the students took him on as the symbol of what they cared about. They were working on a piece that was about young solders and those who knew them in WWII. Throughout the year when ever they worked on that piece they had Jacob's picture and a picture of New York up as what the peice was all about. I saw it performed twice, and was amazed at the feeling each time. I believe that those who would hurt America failed because even now we are again proud to be Americans in this country. They failed because we managed to again be able to mention God in public and it isn't wrong. They failed because we are stronger as a people than we were on September 10, 2001. God Bless America! When it first happened i was in Coach Williams first block class health/pe. He told us about it. 2nd bolck i was in Mrs. Winburn keyboarding class we watch it in class. I didn't find out what had happened until after school when I was at volleyball practice. My coaches were acting like it happened down the street or somewhere close. They wouldn't let us leave to go home until our parents came to pick us up. I didn't even know what the World Trade Center or the Pentagon was until this happened. I'm not really scared or anything but I am more observant of my surroundings. When people stare it makes me nervous for some reason. I didn't know anybody that worked in there. They should be ready for the unexpected no matter what. I also think that it shows how strong Americans can be. Then I became very sad. At school they only told us that the Towers were down. Everybody was speechless. Alot of kids were called down to the office. Those were the kids who had families there. We were sent home after that. When I got home my family had on the t.v. That's when I saw it happen. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Not really. I still have basically have the same life. The only thing that changed is that now I either get really depressed or really angry whenever I see one of those people. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was teaching third grade at St. Rose of Lima School in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. I had walked my class to the end of the hall for their restroom break when the first grade teacher came running up to me asking me if I had heard what happened. Being in class with 24 eight and nine years, I hadn't. When she told me that the World Trade Center had been hit by terrorists flying hijacked planes, I felt ill. I struggled to keep it together so the children wouldn't be upset. I gathered my class and brought them back to our classroom. The principal came by and asked me to step out into the hallway, and proceeded to tell me about the Pentagon, and Flight 93. My first thought was, "Where would they hit next?" I wanted to make sure my students were safe, and they wouldn't hear anything to alarm them. Children in the class had parents who were pilots, parents who traveled, and parents who worked in New York. Children are smart. They sensed something was up, so I told them that there were some people in the world who needed out prayers. We stopped what we were doing, and prayed. During lunch, I called my family members who worked for United Airlines, and anyone I thought may be in harm's way. A few days later, I found out that my college buddy, Mark Hemschoot, had been in the South Tower and hadn't escaped. I was filled with sadness for his wife and sons, and anger that a group of sick people with no respect for life could come into our country and kill wonderful Americans - especially an exceptional man like Mark. A volunteer fireman, children's basketball coach, loving husband, father, son, brother, friend. A man who gave so much of himself to improve other people's lives. The very opposite of the cowards who killed so many for no reason. I don't think the sadness and anger will ever leave me. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I try to appreciate every day God gives me. So many things have been put in perspective for me. I don't get upset about small things. I look at average people all around me, like those on Flight 93, and find a new definition of hero. I have an even deeper sense of patriotism. I never leave the house without telling my sons, Matt and Mike, that I love them. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we should remember that we live in the greatest country in the world. I think we should never take our freedom for granted. Most of all I think we should do whatever we have to do to perserve our wonderful American way of life. Anyone who doesn't appreciate it, or who does anything to undermine it, should leave. We have always flown an American flag. The only change is our renewed sense of appreciation for all those who gave their lives for our freedom. We're prouder than ever to be Americans!
