The same thing was on every channel on the Sony screen in front of me. All were tuned to "Live footage from WTC." My heart sank. It was a dream... definatly a dream... I was on Active Duty, US Air Force, Dover DE, which isnt very far from NYC, when something like this happens. I was a jet engine mechanic and like always my crew and I were listening to the radio while working in the shop. Thats when we heard the news. In disbelief the whole shop stopped working and went into the break room. On the TV with all 60 of us crammed into a little room with jaws on the floor we saw the first tower on fire. The news people were trying to figure out if it was terrorism. In the next few moments the news showed the first video of the first plane crashing into the side of the tower. As if on cue we saw the live shot of the second tower getting hit. We knew then it was terrorism. For the moments that followed I remember looking around the room to make sure I got the look on everyones faces, because I knew I would remember this moment for life. I remember the feeling of pride that the towers hadnt fallen, and a total shock and physical stomach wrenching sickness when they did fall. I joined the military to serve and protect my country. I always had a sense of feeling safe and strength, but at that moment and days later, I never felt so vulnerable and helpless in my life. Although I didnt loose anyone that I knew personally, because I am an EMT I did loose 300+ of my brothers and sisters that served the fire and police departments with honor. The biggest point that I learned from that day was never, and I mean never take anything for granted. That means friends, family, this country and safety. There is always a possibility now that someone I love could be at the wrong place at the wrong time and die needlessly. The United States of America Government in a whole has been archaic on its technology and means of dealing with the world, this lesson should be put forth and learned to bring us back to the present. I lived in an apartment so I really didnt have a place to hang a flag outside, so I figured wearing my uniform on duty for 50 straight days on 12-hour shifts without a day off made up for it, but I really wanted to hang one outside. I have always, since I was a child, hung a flag in my bedroom. My feelings havent changed for the flag. I have always had a very patriotic sole, getting teary during the National Anthem, and carrying the flag during Boy Scout ceremonies as a child, among other stuff. I am a solder, I will live, fight, and die under that beautiful American Flag called Old Glory. As we, my daughter and I, were heading home we heard some very odd information on the radio. It seemed to strange to be real. I actually listened in disbelief. We arrived home and turned on the television set to find the horrible details unfolding before our eyes. It was true! My daughter was due to return to school, but I chose to keep her home. I then went and checked my niece, a kindergarten student, out of school. Why? We could spend the rest of the day talking, watching, and waiting. As I woke up early that morningto catch the bus, I groaned as I thought of the upcoming school day. The day started out normal, I went to my first period class which was personal Finance. Then I went to second period, all was well. But when the Bell to leave second period had ended, I noticed quite a bit of commotion in the halls. People were talking about the world trade centers and about an airplane . As I came to my third period class i Had gathered a lot of info.My science teacher told us that one of the world trade centers had been hit by a airplane. He turned on the TV and a few minits later the principal announced to all teachers to turn off all the televisions. I was very mad because I wanted to know what was going on. I had just got up from a peaceful sleep and turned on the TV, there was new reports comming across the news about the World Trade Center Buildings being hit by planes, I watched in horror as these buildings were attacked and brought down by unknowns at the time. I yelled to my husband to come see what was on the TV, we both stood in disbelife as we watched what once was a beautiful skyline in New York, come crumbling down to dust and rubble. It was unbeliveable to watch. I was in sixth grade,11 years old,I had just got into Social Studies class and my teacher Mrs.Harrington, turned on the news. I watched, horrified as the second building came crashing down. It just, fell. Like a giant hand came down from the sky and crushed it. I will never forget seeing all of those children crying for they're parents or grandparents. The thought of all those people who died, crushed, and burning, just like the towers will never leave me. At the time, my grandparents were vacationing close to D.C. I was worried about them. Were they all right? Luckily they had turned on the news to see the weather before they visited the White House and they saw the damage that had been done. They were unharmed. I remember my sister Karen calling me and asking what I thought about the plane striking the World Trade Center. She asked if I thought it was an accident or an act of terrorism. I turned on the television and could not believe my eyes at what I saw. I told her it must be an accident because nobody would be sick enough to do this intentionally. Then I watched in amazement as the second plane swooped in and struck the other tower. I told her what just happened and that it in no way could accidental. I was dumbfounded. It felt like nothing I ever felt before. At first it seemed surreal, and then the horror and emptiness and the anger set in. I could not tear my self away from the TV for long the rest of the day. It wasn't as though I wanted to watch the attack over and over, it just felt more than ever that I belonged to a nation, a family, and I wanted to stay as connected as I could. My life has changed in that the things that upset me before seem so petty now. I have a stronger sense of family, not just personally but nationally. I don't envy my children for the world or future that faces them. I only hope and pray that there will be some resolve to all this, and soon. This is a different world now. We can't take our freedom and sense of security for granted anymore. We have to work together in one common cause now. I feel we may have to give up some of our freedoms, our rights, to survive. We can't be worried about certain rights if it means survival. Profiling might seem wrong, but how do we recognize our enemy without it. These are not rational people. They are an archaic people with archaic beliefs and modern technology. It is a dangerous combination. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we should remember the victims of this cowardly act. The heroics of everyday people who stepped forward to do what was right, without hesitation or fear for their own safety. The Police and Firefighters, Soldiers and Civilians. The passengers on the planes, Mayor Rudy Guilliani, who I thought did an excellent job, providing information, and implementing action where it was needed. I woke up, did the usual stuff before school. Nobody ever watches tv or turn on the radio in the morning so I didn't knew anything about the plane crashes at all. At school nobody told me about anything also, or maybe I just wasn't in the mood to listen to my teachers that day. Then in 6th period my friend said something about a plane crashing in New York, and I just shrugged it off about it being an accident of some sort. After school I finally turned on the tv and saw how everything happened and learned that it was a terrist attack. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? Well....My wife woke up around 5 or 6 and said she saw smoke on the tv...(half asleep mind ya) and said it looked like a mountian blew up...probably Mt. Rainer...... I was working for the US Enviromental Protection Agency just a few blocks from the World Trade Cener. Shortly after hearing the first explosion, my boss came in to tell us that she was down on Broadway getting coffee when she saw the plane crash into the first tower. It was no accident, she said, and it was a large passenger jet. Our television set didn't work, since it was hooked up to cable, so we couldn't get any news via TV. We knew this was bad and started to get a head count of the people on our floor (only three years before, we had been informed that our federal building was on Bin Laden's "hit list", and we had not forgotten this) - the only TV working was one not hooked up to cable and it was in the office of our Deputy Regional Administrator - his office had five huge windows that faced the WTC, where we could see the hole in the first tower and flames and a number or smaller explosions, and people beginning to jump and fall from the bulding. I then saw a plane come around one of the towers. It seemed to speed up and crash into the second tower which then erupted into a huge torch of flame. I remember thinking "this is war, someone is attacking my country." We knew we needed to get out of our building. I didn't know that the woman standing next to me in that office, looking out on that horror had a sister in the tower. Her sister was killed, and she had watched it. All of us were waiting for an explosion to hit our bulding next. We started to evacuate. After going down 30 flights of stairs, I made it to the street at Broadway and Reade. FBI agents and SWAT teams were directing us away from our building. The streets were filled with smoke, and what looked like snow falling. I later saw that this snow was paper - all sorts of papers that had been blown from the WTC into lower Manhattan - memos from offices, photos of people - bits and pieces of the workday lives of those in the WTC. At this same time, we saw that people were jumping from the towers - some were together, holding hands, one lady tried to keep her dress down as she began to fall. It was the worst thing I'd ever seen in my life, and a vision that still replays itself in my memory no matter how hard I try to make it stop. As I made my way across Broadway, I saw three fighter jets overhead - I was never so happy to see the US military in my life, and I wanted them to get the bastards who had done this. I remember seeing a group of construction workers jump from their truck, pick up all the tools they could handle and run to help some cops who were headed toward the WTC. I wonder if they made it. I was on Church Street heading north when the first tower fell. Someone behind me started screaming that the building was collapsing - but I couldn't turn around and look, I just kept moving, looking down at the streets littered with people's lives and what was left of downtown NYC. When the building came down it felt like an earthquake and I first thought that someone had bombed the subways. Later, I made it to a friend's apartment in Greenwich Village where I stayed that night. I went over to St. Vincent's hospital to volunteer help for whatever was needed, but was turned away - they had more volunteers than they needed, and there were so few survivors being treated at the hospital. I remember the face of a young doctor, still in green scrubs, stethoscope around her neck, walking on Seventh Avenue South near the hospital, with tears running down her face. While ambulances had gone toward the towers with sirens blasting, they were returning without sirens and lights - death was everywhere. I still dream about it, I can still hear it and smell it - and the whine of a low flying plane's engine is enough to wake me up, but the worst thing is the unrequited anger against those who committed this terrible act of murder. I can do nothing but try to make my country and my city stronger, and keep my faith in God. God got me through the 11th and He'll get me through the aftermath. For those of us who experienced it up close and personal, it will never heal, there will never be closure, it will always be a wound to our souls. I still live and work in NYC - in fact, this spring my employer is moving to the World Financial Center in the shadow of Ground Zero. I'm going too - it won't be easy, but if we don't move on, the bastards win. My view of life is very different now - time is more precious, family and loved ones mean more, and I cherish my country more than ever. I have learned not to sweat the small things - life is too short and too precious, and my faith in God is stronger than ever. September 11th made me stronger, more resolute, and yes, a little bit tougher - but then again, I'm a New Yorker. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That this was a terrible act of war launched against our nation, our citizens and our way of life. It must always be called by it's true name, an "attack" not a "tragedy" or "terrible incident", as I hear so often. Mallary Oden I was in Mrs. Gaydon's social studies class in 2nd period at Thompson Middle School on the day of 9/11. At first I didn't know what was going on. I was having mixed emotions. I had questions like: Why would somebody do something like this to the United States of America? What did we do wrong? They came over the intercom and told us to turn on our T.V. It was so shocking what had happened.I didn't know if I wanted to go home or not, but I was happy to be with my classmates and best friends. On September 11th I was in school in my first period class with my math teacher, Mrs.Weaver, the bell rang to switch classes and it seemed like a normal bright sunny day. In the hallways I heard people talking about the Twin Towers and something about an airplane crashing into the one. I went to my next class and that's when I was told what had happened. At first I felt revenge and upset at the same time. Revenge for my country and the people who died trying to save others life. I did not know who you would get revenge on because it was not like Pearl Harbor when we all knew who did it. I also felt upset because I was stuck in school somewhere I would least want to be. Montanya turned on the Television and we saw the 2nd tower fell. She turned the television off and said, "let's get back to work." My sister,her fiancee and I had gone there to celebrate my 21st birthday. I ended up sleeping over my girlfriends house and we had woken up in the morning without turning on the TV or radio. We had parted our ways for work and I had hopped into my car ready for my 30 minute commute. I usually have some kind of tape playing in the car and that day was no different. I remember the moment I realized something was going on was when I was sitting at a Red Light near my work. I looked at the cars around me and saw the same dejected look on everyones face. It seemed quite odd, but I didn't really think anything of it until the next intersection I had a different set of cars around me with the drivers having the same looks. I popped the tape out and that was when I heard the radio and what was going on. I rushed to work knowing we had a little portable TV there. Since I was the opening the store that day and would be the only one in for a while I huddled around that TV for a couple of hours. The scenes were straight out of a movie. I had never been to New York so I wasn't really familiar with the World Trade Center other then knowing the fact they were two "tall ass" buildings. After watching the Towers collapse and being totally disgusted with whoever could do such a thing I started thinking about the World and how it had been completely different before I had woke up that morning. I lived really close to SFO airport and had grown accustom to the loud noises of planes landing and taking off. What caught my attention that day was the lack of noise. I have heard many accounts from the victims families and the one thing you always hear is that they wished they had had a chance to say goodbye. Since then she has changed the flag, but there has been one swinging in the yard ever since and when I get my first place I will definitely fly one. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On the day of the attacks, I was sitting in Science class and our English teacher ran and told Mr. Christopherson, our Science teacher, about the news. He then told us about it and turned on the news so we could keep up with what had happened. As he was doing this, he discussed with us that we were at more of a minimal threat of getting bombed because we were more towards the middle of the United States and we don't have that much that would give them reason to bomb us. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I think that my life has chnaged a lot since the attacks because now all of the security in our country has been heightened. Even if they don't bomb us again it has still affected us lot and we don't have quit as much of the freedom as we used to. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the bravery of the passengers riding on the planes should be remembered. Even though they knew that it might have great risks they over took their captors and made the plane crash before it got to its destination. I think that we should also remember how much this has made our country stronger. Ever since the attacks, our country has banded together and we can now truly be called the United States. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes. I think that the flag is much more symbolic now after September 11th because it signifies our freedom and the fact that we have banned together as a country.
