NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I live near Sublette, MO (I have a Greentop address) and work in Kirksville, MO. I was off work (I'm off work on Tues. a.m.) and I was checking my e-mail when I heard about the first plane. (I was listening to National Public Radio.) I thought, "What a weird accident." A few minutes later the second plane crashed into the second tower and I thought "That ain't no accident!" I went to the TV set and turned on CNN and watched the horror...actually I was riveted to it. When the towers crumbled, I remember just repeating "Oh, my God," over and over. It was so shocking, it seemed like a bad movie, totally unreal. I imagine it was kind of like how the U.S. soldiers in WWII must have felt when they saw the concentration camps for the first time...weirdly unreal. The odd thing was my grandmother, who had terminal lung cancer at the time, was on her way up to my house with my mom and mom's friend Paula because she wanted to see my donkeys, Sylvia and Topaz, and pet and feed them. When we were out there with the donkeys, it was like nothing ever happened. So bizzare. I figured we'd be at war by the end of the day. I was kind of surprised we hadn't declared war "the old fashioned way" via Congress. My grandmother told me that it would be like Pearl Harbor day or when Kennedy was killed, I'd always remember that day like it was yesterday. Later that day I went to the Hy-Vee grocery store in Kirksville (Kirksville has about 17,000 people) and cars were lined up clear onto Hwy. 63 to buy gas. I thought to myself, "People are crazy. We could be at war and they're all filling their tanks thinking there's going to be a run on gas." Some unscrupulous gas station owners had already raised the price 10-15 cents. I was really miffed about that...some patriots! When I got into Hy-Vee the other shocker was that there was not a single bottle of bottled water in the store! Like terrorists were going to mess with the water supply in a small, overly white town where anyone would notice someone different. Shoot, people in my town know my car, me, my dog, and some terrorist is going to slip in? Give me a break! I marveled at the fear and gullibility of some folks. Meanwhile, I bought beer instead. I figured, "If we're going to be attacked, at least I'll have beer." I also remember being angry that Pres. Bush was flying around in Air Force one, seemingly hiding, instead of going back to Washington. He straightened up, and I was ok with his actions over the following week, but I distinctly remember thinking that no matter what the reason, it LOOKED like he was hiding like a scared rabbit in the bushes. I think if I were him I'd have gone back to DC even though it was somewhat of a security risk, because I believe that in times of trouble like this, people expect their president to look like they are in charge and to stand up and be a brave person, an example to the nation. Had it been me, I'd have quietly returned to Washington and when I got back, I'd get on TV and say, "We have to sit still, hang tough, keep our powder dry and not let these guys win. We're not cancelling baseball, golf tournaments, football games, nothing, because then the terrorists win....then they have affected our daily lives." I spent much of the next day worrying about the daughter of my significant friend Mitch, who lives in Queens. I was relieved she was fine. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. In some ways yes, in some ways no. Yes in that it made me realize that our borders are not impregnable (sp?). We are at risk for terrorism like the rest of the world. Yes in that I value my civil liberties even more and am more actively angry that John Ashcroft is attempting to combat terrorism by throwing some of my civil liberties and rights to privacy out the window. Yes in that I realize that we are all in a weird mix. I am proud to be an American and am as patriotic as the next person but I am not blind to the fact our attitudes are not well received throughout the world. No in that, on one of the worst days in American history, our infrastructure outside of NYC wasn't even SCRATCHED. My friend Julie was able to e-mail her cousin who was stationed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. (He couldn't e-mail back because they were on a security alert, but he did get the e-mail from her.) In the midwest, our phones were untouched. Mitch's daughter e-mailed me the very next day (although she had to go to a friend's house in NJ to do it, her phones were screwed up). Most of us still had business as usual. No in that my political views are pretty much the same. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That it probably surprised the terrorists that we didn't crump over this. I think most of our enemies in history have made the mistake that, because we are a "mongrel nation" of sorts, with a lot of pleural views and cultures, that we're weak because of it, and can be fragmented. On the contrary, it's what makes us strong....you might say it's a form of "hybrid vigor". Totalitarian regimes just don't get it, they try to break us, and they (so far) have always failed. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I got a flag decal for my car and I did fly the flag as part of the President's request to do so for 30 days. I was glad I already had a flag because there was a run on them, too! I joked that the Republicans bought up all the flags so the Democrats would look like pinko traitors. Over the following year, I have found myself being really angry that some Republicans have played this game where they're the only real patriots and that if you question the President at all, you're a traitor. People have a short memory. My grandmother told me Republicans "pissed and moaned" about FDR all the time, even during the war. To hear it on TV now, you'd think no one ever uttered a harsh word about FDR from 1941-45. Of course, most of the people who remembered that are all dead, so it's easy to revise history. I've always felt soft and squishy about the flag. I think one of my favorite sports memories was the 1980 miracle on ice in the Olympics where the hockey player was wrapped in it. That's why I can't believe all the recent flap about the pledge of allegiance. Once again, people have a short memory. My mom grew up before "under God" was put in the pledge and she still goofs it up and occasionally says, "one nation indivisible". The other funny thing about the Pledge is that most people don't realize it was written in 1892 by a Baptist minister who was also a "Christian Socialist" for a model Columbus Day program provided by the National Education Association! Only in America, right? Only in America can a pinko preacher write something for the teachers' union that the right wing hates and it becomes a national icon. I like his original pledge better. It goes, "I pledge allegiance to MY flag and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." He was a BAPTIST and he wasn't all hung up w/putting God in it! I like the "my flag" concept of the original one, too. He wanted to also put the word "equality" in but he knew some school superintendents in the south would reject it because of the civil rights controversies at the time. But that's the deal, right? Our flag unites our strange little mongrel nation and only in America can you go from the outhouse to the penthouse. What a country! (To borrow from Yakov Smirnoff, the comedian.) I was watching the television at about 11.30pm Australian time when I saw the second plane go into the other tower. I thought that I was watching a movie at the time. I later realized that this was no movie when the third plane hit the pentagon. I was shocked by what I saw. I could not believe what was going on. September 11, 2001 Ground Zero Miriam and I began the development of our Ground Zero stained glass project after September 11, 2001 as a result of the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City and the impact it had on my family and me. My sister, Joyce still lives in Manhattan where she lost her business along with her life long girlfriend to the attack. Miriam my wife wanted to have a copy of the photograph taken of the firemen raising the American flag at the WTC site to remember all that had happened. To get the photograph we contacted the Record, which sent us one of the copies that were distributed across the nation. Miriam framed the photograph and wanted to know if I thought it could be made into an stained glass art panel. Looking at the photo caused me to have a lot of memories and I began to wonder if it would be possible to do the photograph in glass. As time passed and I thought about what had happened I was filled with a lot of anger and rage regarding the attack to the WTC and our people. The rage in me was driving me to take some kind of action as it was building in me to an extreme level. People were asking why here, why now, how come there is so much hate toward the US. My past experiences gave me a better insight I felt then others were able to see. The concept is not about love and hate it is about power and the future. We are at the threshold of a new future one that could lead us towards the concept of understanding the differences between people and grasping the idea of respecting those differences no matter where or who that person may be. Or, we will be dragged back into the world of the dark ages of barbarism and ignorance only to see a future driven by those who hunger for power to control people and who would not accept their view of life and the world. I feel that we as the human race are at the crossroads where we are moving out of our adolescents towards our adulthood beginning our growth to maturity. The people and beliefs that would drive us back to the dark ages fear the growth of change for it would give every person the ability to think for themselves, to understand, and most of all allow them the ability to say no to those who would tell people how to live, love, think, and worship. Faced with the feeling that I had to do something I thought about the Ground Zero photograph and decided to make an stained glass art panel depicting the event. In mid-October 2001, I start the process off by contacting the North Jersey Media Group who own the newspaper the Record. The general counsel Jennifer Borg and I began negotiations so that I could receive a legal copyright agreement to reproduce the photograph in stained glass. It took from mid-October 2001 until mid-February 2002 before the general counsel and I could reach an agreement. Once I received the copyright agreement, Miriam and I started contacting glass manufactures across the nation in order to get access to different glass samples. The glass manufactures were most helpful once they learned what I was doing and that I had a copyright to reproduce the photograph in glass. The selection of glass proceeded from mid-February 2002 until the end of April 2002. After all the glass was selected the necessary order was placed in May 2002 and we had to wait until the glass started being delivered around July 2002 and completed by the end of September 2002. Miriam and I began working on the glass project by building the necessary structures in July 2002 and developing the needed photograph layouts so that I could establish the pattern and glass cutting lines. Our serious work began when we started to receive some of the glass in July after which I began to cut and assemble the panel. The work progressed slowly through the months as we had to handle may different items during this time. As this project began to grow we received much encouragement from friends and associates to keep plugging away as they were very supportive of the work selected. We completed the glass rendition of Ground Zero in January 2003 and extended and invitation to the City of Plano Fire Department to display the stained glass art panel to public at the fire departments main headquarters in Plano, Texas. Deputy Fire Chief Kirk H. Owen viewed the work in late January 2002, and he said he would ask the Fire Chief and City Management for permission to display the work. After receiving permission we placed the stained glass depiction of the flag raising at the Plano fire department for public viewing. We have also received an invitation from the State Fair of Texas to place the stained glass panel on public display in the Creative Arts building during the fair. Miriam and I are very grateful to the State Fair of Texas in allowing us to place this stained glass panel on display during the fair. I feel that we have dedicated this art work to the lives lost, citizens, firemen, policemen, and solders then, today, and tomorrow whether given on the fields of battle or on the streets of our cities and towns is the price that must be paid for the one thing we all need to learn and hold in our hearts. Those who stand at our gates looking into the fires, crime, and wars give to all of us that ability to seek the what we need to keep in our hearts. Some have called this freedom, others our rights, and others the American way, however I feel that what we really need to hold in our hearts is the respect and integrity for others. How else or why else, would someone, anyone place their own life on the line to fight a fire, stop an armed criminal, leave their family going across the seas to seek out that which would see all this destroyed. It took time for the Ground Zero September 11, 2001 panel to be completed. During that time my wife and I were able to start our own healing process from those events while at that same time being able to depict a single event that we will enable us to remember what happened on a sunny clear day in the City of New York. I was walking to the bus when the first plane hit and knew nothing. When I got on the bus the guy behind me pointed and said, "Look you can see it". my buss ride goes right along the water were I could see everything from the window. The vibe on the bus was that this was an accident. Then we saw the second place hit and we knew otherwise. We were in line at the tolls of the Lincoln tunnel just as they closed it. Ten minutes earlier I would have been stuck in the city for two days. At that time I got the buzz on the cell phone telling me I had voice mail, all the phone lines were jammed out and I could only get a line out about once every half hour. It was form my mother, who was in tears trying to find out if I was ok. I was amazed at how many people got in touch with me that day. people I hadn't heard from since I had moved away from home a little over a year before the 11th. Luckily the bus brought us all back home, and I stood at my bus stop and just watched in shock for a while before heading home to watch on t.v. I remember being so afraid the first time I heard a plane go overhead. It turned out to be the air force. For the next tow days I was glued to my t.v.. I was up all night. every siren, every plane, every loud noise scared the living hell out of me, and still does when I am in the city. Two days later back at work in the city you couldn't help but cry when you saw all the signs of missing people. At Union Square it was the most heartbreaking scene I had ever scene. One story after another of missing parents, sons, friends. for the next two weeks everyone in the city was you're best friend. It was amazing how we all came together. It wasn't till about three weeks later when i heard a guy threaten a guy working at a deli counter with a roasted chicken did I know that the city was getting back to normal, or as normal as it will every be again. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was working for an asphalt paving company at the time the WTC was struck. I was on Interstate 66 Eastbound in Northern Virginia when our crew foreman told us that the Trade Center had been struck. By the time I had turned on the radio in the car the Pentagon had just been struck. I thought it was some sort of sick dream. I've always been a fan of Tom Clancy's novels and this is what it sounded like- a novel. My job released us all to go home to our families and when I returned to my house I sat fixated in front of the television just to see if what I had been hearing on the radio was just a sick daydream of some sort. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has completely changed since 9/11/01. I had been out of the U.S. Army since 9/16/98 and when 9/11 happened I felt an overwhelming force tell me that I should rejoin the military. I joined the National Guard and am currently in the process of trying to get back onto active duty. I feel guilty everytime some sort of action against terrorism happens, because I'm not over there helping my brothers and sisters in arms even though I am still in the military. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that 9/11 should be remembered for the sacrifices that were made by all of the rescue personnel, police departments, military personnel, and most of all the innocent civilians that lost their lives. 9/11 wasn't about structures being targeted, it was about the loss of human life and the bravery shown by everyone that helped during the attacks and afterwards during the search, recovery, salvage, and rebuilding. Their steadfast determination to rebuild helped to start the nation on a path of continuous healing. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? After the attacks that flag flew even higher because I was so proud at how this country had reacted and the patriotism that had been reborn. The hallways were filled with laughter and socializing. I thought it was going to be another regular day. During English class, my teacher sent me and Katie upstairs to the computer lab to type up the reports. While we were typing up the reports, we heard a loud echo from the speaker . It was somebody who was announcing something through the speaker. Katie asked me "what did he say?" I said "I have no idea, I'm sure it's nothing important." I continued typing up the report and ignored the speaker. Katie and I are hearing impaired, so we didn't know what was going on. Katie became concerned, so she went to ask one of the students in the computer lab. The student told her there was a plane crash. I thought it was odd that someone from the speaker to inform the whole school about the plane crash even though the plane crashes all the time. Katie left the computer lab and headed back downstairs to check what was going on. I just assumed that it was nothing anyway. When I was on my way back to my English class, I saw my English teacher was sitting outside of the classroom trying to get ahold of someone. She looked like she had been crying for some reasons. I began to have this gut feeling that something was fishy. When I arrived into the classroom, I heard people chatting from the distance with the sound of excitement. I didn't expect them to be all that excited and they were surrounding me. They all exclaimed "There was a plane crash." I said "So? It happens all the time time." They said "No, no, no the plane hit the twin towers." I said "Oh accident happens." They said "NO, they did it on PURPOSE." It totally hit me. I said "Whoa, wait a minute, what did you mean by on "purpose?"" They explained to me that there were terrorists from another country hit the twin towers while there were other passengers on the plane. I was shocked to hear about it. I looked out to the window and looked up to the sky. At the last minute, I felt the chills coming through my spine. I knew this was a really serious situation . I have seen all the students walking down the hall talking about it with their horrified look on their faces. The whole school was talking about it. When I arrived to the graphics class everybody were sitting quietly and listening to the news on the radio. My interpreter was interpreting. The news was heartbreaking. My class took the situation very seriously. all of a sudden I felt so unsafe because the war had just begun. After this happened, I have seen the news on TV talking about it everyday. I have seen various flags outside of people's homes including on their cars too. I heard so many horrifying stories about what happened to those people who were the witnesses of the twin towers. As I entered the room things were not the same, the teacher walked across the hall to find out what happened and then came to tell us. When I first heard about it I got chills sent up and down mu spine. We walked to another room were we watched the news. As I sat there all I could think about was what about all those people. Then it was of to lunch nothing was normal that day. Walking down the halls you could see the worried look on peoples faces. Wondering about the Mackinaw Bridge was all I could think about but then I said I have to stop. And there it ended untill I got home. We had to fight to get freedom and America stayed strong through it all and now even through this attack. I am very proud to be an American and I show my nationalism proudly. I was just starting my senior year of college at a university in Ohio. The night beofre I can gone to bed thinking that I was part of a great country in which something like September 11th would never happen. Then I awoke to go to class on Tuesday morning and herad reports on the radio saying they would update the events. I was unsure of what they were talking about so I walked into my living room and turned on the televison. There I saw the twin towers ablaze. as I watched the news casters doing reports of the mornings events tey should video of the planes crashing into the buildings. Then as I watched the first tower began to collapse. I remember the anchors did not at first realize that the towers were collpasing. I sat there on a stool in my kitchen turning to my roommate in disbelief saying "that building is falling down." The rest of the day all I did was watch television updates. I sat in my apartment in the middle of Ohio crying for the lose of so many innocent lives. I witnessed history on that day through the news media but I witnessed history really for the first time. My generation has never had to live through an event like this. I am really too young to remember the Gulf War and the impact it had on this country. This is the first time in my life that I watched an event unfold that I knew would change the entire fabric of this nation. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has not changed drastically since September 11th. I did not lose any friends or family members due to the terrorist attacks. The way my life has changed is that I have a greater pride in my country and I feel more greatly how wonderful it is to live here. I also appreciate my freedom more than I ever have before. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the most important thing to remember about Sept. 11th is the bravery of all those involved in the attacks. The people on the airlines and the people in the buildings who did all they could to survive. The fire fighters and police who ran into the buildings to try to help save people and all of the men and women who worked for months at ground zero to clean up the site and recover the bodies of those lost in the attacks. I did fly an American flag after Sept. 11th and to this day still fly one. My feelings did not change about the flag because I always took great pride inthis symbol of my country. Just a desire to touch at the heart of and be a part of our great country's support and caring. Caring for those innocent victims who lost their lives 1 year ago today, 9/11/01. I am a 57 year old grandmother. Native American. My son and two of his children live with me.I work full time and generally am up and about at 6:00 a.m., readying myself for work and the day. But this particulzr morning I was awakened by the ringing of the telephone. It was my 26 year old daughter who lives in the same city. Her words, "are you aware of what's happening?" were my first clue of the terrible evil perpetrated upon our country. "What?" I responded. "Turn on the tv, it's all over the news" she answered. "A plane just crashed into one of the New York twin towers, they're talking about possibility of terrorist attack on the towers." And so I turned on the tv and together we watched in horror via telephone and the tv. I got down on my knees at the time of the second attack plane hitting the towers. I prayed to God for mercy - mercy for those people in the buildings and mercy for our country. I had to let my grandchildren, 13 and 10 years old know about what their day was going to hold. My 10 year old grandson was frightened. My 13 year old granddaughter - just the other day mentioned to me that ever since that day, she doesn't feel safe in her school. The whole day was surreal, I like the rest of Americz, absorbing the reality that the evils of war could be visited upon our shores. I am today heartened by the great spirit of the American people. It's unbelievable what has happened. We will surivive and we will fight back. God bless our great country and make us tankful for all your great mercies both seen and unseen. I'm more aware of the fragile nature of our humaness and take that into consideration in my every waking hour. I feel fear and geif in many areas. Fear for my children and grandchildren. What is their legacy going to be? Sometimes when I work to beautify my yard, thoughts come to me, why am I doing this, its possible it could all be destoyed because of nuclear wars. I also think I should be stockpiling food and water. Yet I feel it would be in vain because we'll all be destroyed so quickly we won't have time to think about food and water. I tend to be a person who likes to be alone much of the time. Since then I've made a concerted effort to spend more time with my family and friends, to talk to my family and friends about their interests and thoughts and concerns. I worry that my 11 and 13 year old grandsons will be going off to fight a terrible ugly war. I hope that all of this is just a bad dream. The people who lost their lives on 9/11 - the people on UA flight 93 who made a choice about their ultimate sacrifice - themselves!!!! Oh God, may they sit at the right hand side of Thy throne. We will always remember the helpless victims who had no choice, those who perished in the towers. The firemen and policemen who rushed into the midst of the chaos to save and help those who were either running from or trapped in the chaos. I always think about certain people I read about who helped each other to try to escape. A couple of men, one in a wheelchair and his friend stayed at his side the whole time while trying to escape down the stairs. I remember others too but not having full details of the incidents, can't list them. But screaming sirens, newscasters' voices, billowing black smoke, people running from, bells tolling, fire burning, a man's brave voice talking on the cell phone to his loved one, saying good-bye and his last words being filled with fear, oh my God, he was in the middle of it and lost his life! I shouldn't have to remember these things because 9/11 should not have happened. But it did. So these are some of the more vivid memories that prevail without my wanting them too. The memories I cherish are those of the brave ones - the firemen, the policemen, the search and rescue teams and their hard working dogs who worked only to serve man - the families, especially the children, those who perished and those left behind - I read somewhere that one mother describes her child whose father died while she was preganant with the child as "the kiss your father left behind" - I could go on and on, but let it be said, "we will always remember" "we will never forget" those who lost their lives on this terrible 9/11 morning. I flew the American Flag, yes I did. I have always been proud of our flag, my father served in the US army and my brother in the air force, my sister was in the Navy wacs. My heritage is Oneida Indian. I am and will always stand by this great country. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in bed with a terrible sinus infection and decided to turn the tv on. What I thought I would see when I turned on the tw was an old movie. What I saw was much different. I saw the first plane flying into the building, I thought to myself that Hollywood had just gone too far and that I wasn't going to watch that kind of garbage. Then about the time I was going to change the channel the second plane flew in the the other building and the reality and horror of what had just happened slammed into me. The sinus infection just seemed petty in light of what I'd just seen. MY first thought was of my children and husband. I called each of them on their cell phones just to connect and to tell them I loved them. My oldest son teaches in a Dallas subburb and his students, normally very active were quiet and passive. My husband, also a school teacher in a small town had much the same reaction from his students. I work at Lubbock Christian University and as the student body gathered for chapel there was silence as they watched the horror unfold on the large screens at the front of the auditorium. Many students, as well as faculty and staff were on their knees in prayer for the victims and their families. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My prayer life has changed. I thank God every day for the blessings and the trials in my life. I try to tell my family often how much I love them. I saw it in 8th grad in my history class when my teacher told us what happened we really didnt do anything she didnt let us watch or do anything, we just had to stay on task and we we're all wondering what had just happened. Whhen i got home all that was on tv was Sept 11 and thhen i learned about ti I was pretty freaked out. I asked my mom about she was crying because i have family right next to the world trade centers. I was on vacation in Europe in early September and originally scheduled to fly home to the U.S. on 9/11. Deciding that I wanted to stay one extra day, I went to the airport in the morning, rebooked my flight for the 12th and returned to my hotel to arrange to stay an extra night. By the time all this took place, I returned to my room around 2:30pm CET and switched on CNN for some background TV before going back out for the afternoon. CNN was playing a live feed from a NY TV station about "a possible fire" at the World Trade Center. I watched with fascination wondering what in the world could have happened. Then, live on TV, I see the second plane crash into the second tower. Immediately I think to myself, "this is NO accident." I spend the next 6 hours glued to CNN watching the events unfold back home. I'm completely stunned! I scan the local regional channels and one after another in Dutch, German, French, Italian... all of them are carrying some form of live coverage of what's happening. That evening I went out to get something to eat and was shocked that the lively, happenin' city of Amsterdam was very quiet and silent. Streets empty, few people outside. I then spend the next three days in a ritual of watching the news, calling the airlines to see when the airspace is reopened and e-mailing friends and coworkers back home as to what's happening. I end up leaving Europe that Friday morning, originally routed to JFK, but changed to Cincinnati in mid-flight where I then spend the night because all the airlines don't have their planes and crews in position for normal operations. I'm fascinated by the plastic knives mandated with dinner in First Class. Arriving in Cincinnati, a huge banner is draped in customs welcoming home U.S. travelers and custom officials greeting travelers like long lost friends. I finally make it back home to California late Saturday afternoon. From my own perspective, it was the most haunting, eerie, and scary week of my live. Due to the financial downturn (from an already failing tech economy) I was laid off from my job one month later. I ended up unemployed for nearly six months before landing a job that paid a third of my old job. The economic disruptions from that infamous day still reverberate to this day. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? First and foremost would be thoughts of the poor, innocent souls that perished that day. Ordinary people just trying to get through life were snuffed out in the most horrific way. It was also a wake up call for the complacency that existed in our nation's security and intelligence sectors. It truly showed how vulnerable our country was for so long. No, I did not have an appropriate place to hang one. Many of us in the office taped small flags to our name placards on the outside of our cubicles. My feelings for the flag were not affected. I was more "disturbed" with the bandwagon patriotic mentality that was brewing around the nation as people forgot their petty hatreds, misgivings and general nastiness and "rallied 'round the flag". It's too bad that spirit didn't remain and our society quickly slipped back to vengenance, ignorance, and general apathy. It only made the patriotic fervor seem phony and staged. You still see it today with how people who put American flag stickers on their cars have neglected them to where they look worn, faded and torn. It was the fad of the moment that has passed from memory as we're preoccupied with other mundane matters. My September 11th morning started while I was in my Junior year of college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I was on the phone with my mom who was in Brighton, Michigan minutes before I walked to class and she answered her call-waiting. My aunt was the person on the other line and she had just called to say that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. My mom then hung up with her sister and passed the information on to me. It was unusual but at that point we didn't think much of it and I expected to see that a private plane had hit a building. After hanging up the phone I walked a couple of blocks to a media class that had a very large projector screen at the front of the room. During my trip to class the second plane had already hit the World Trade Center. I remember entering the classroom with my friend from a door in the back corner of the dimly lit room and looking directly at the huge screen displaying the two smoking sky scrapers followed by replays of each impact. It was truly unbelievable. At that point our instructors did not realize the importance this event would have on the world and they turned off the CNN feed and began the lecture. By the time class was over and we turned the projector back to CNN, the Pentagon had been hit. This was the first time I heard the word "attack" related to September 11th, 2001. I didn't go to the rest of my classes and huried home to find that none of my six housemates were home so I went next door to find an entire room of about a dozen friends gathered to quietly watch the television coverage. This was when I saw something that I will never forget as long as live. The cameras were filming men and women jumping to their deaths out of the World Trade Center buildings rather than be engulfed in flames. That was the first time I couldn't hold back my emotions and tears began just running down my cheeks. That single moment made me realize how severe the situation was. Up to that point everything was a blur except for that. The next major memory was when the first tower fell. Bone-chilling disbelief. I watched people running for their lives through the streets of New York only steps in front of a dense cloud of smoke and debris as cameras continuously fed the us with images of our humanity and mortality. Then the second tower fell. I felt so helpless and immediately starting wondering if I knew anyone on those planes or in those buildings. News anchors began estimating the body count but we couldn't fathom casualties of that magnitude. At that point it seemed like it would never stop. We were just hoping that the attack was over. The Pentagon and Pennsylvania crashes didn't have the same overwhelming effect that the World Trade Center did. Those two just made me think that more were coming. I was so thankful that the White House was not damaged that day. There are not many other specifics that I can recall. People bleeding and dying in the Manhatten streets, those burning towers, the collapsing buildings, hundreds of impact replays, and those poor people jumping to their deaths. It was so very wrong in every way. Watching those initial hours of television coverage with my friends is what I remember most. I finally left my friends' house and returned to my own home where I continued watching the television and wiping tears from my face. I didn't want to be alone and thankfully I didn't have to be. It was the worst day I have ever seen. The days and weeks following the attack were very unique. It seemed like for the first time in a long time, we wanted to show our pride for our country. Almost every house and building in town was flying Old Glory and that was beautiful. I wish it was like that every day. It was the first time I saw so many individual Americans wanting to let the world know how strong we are and that we are United. We immediately went out and bought two American flags. One hung on the front of our house and the other was hung outside of my second-story bedroom window over a popular alley for foot traffic. My feelings about the flag and America have both changed. I was born in 1980 and my generation has never had a World War or a Draft. The Persian Gulf conflict was the closest thing we have seen. We were young when that happened and it didn't seem to be too bad. We felt invincible. September 11th destroyed a false sense of security for my entire generation. I was just getting out of bed for work when my fiancee,Michael, turned on the t.v. he told me to hurry and get out of bed. I got up and looked at the t.v. I thought i was dreaming I could not believe my eyes right at that moment was when the second plane hit the tower I stood there in shock and disbelief. I watched as the towers fell and all I could do was cry. I carried on and went to work(I worked in a restaurant)and got there a little after 11am,I have never seen so many faces with so much confusion and hurt on them. We were not busy that day,me and my coworkers gathered around the t.v. at the restaurant and watched as our nation fell under attack we cried and hugged alot just trying to comfort each other. I went home shortly after 1pm and sat with my fiancee in his arms, I felt safe but in reality I was scared, I was scared for my country, I was scared for all of those people who did not make it out of the towers and their families,but we did not run and hide we fought back and will continue to fight back until we are triumphant. I am proud of the men and women who risked their life to save one and thank them from the bottom of my heart, they are heroes and will forever be remebered ion my prayers. My wife and I had just gotten married in California and we were off to Roma, Italia for our honeymoon. We arrived their in the afternoon on Sept 10th. Having a jetlag hangover, we rested our bodies to fianlly wake up hours into the night. We decided to trek out during the late hours of the evening and ultimately got lost- that's the fun of a foreign place - as long as you find your way back. For awhile all was very quite until eventually we arrived in the central nightclub area of Roma. Fortunately for us, we were 'picked' by the trendy doorgirl to enter 'Torpedo' the name of the establishment. We enjoyed drinks and each other as honeymooners are meant to do and talked with Italians about culture and the big soccer matches being played at the time. The night wore on and the jetlag set in - we left. The next day we woke up and set out to visit the Colusieum among other points of interest. We went to the Vatican, the Ancient Ruins and roamed the narrow dark streets of this romantic city. For hours Susanne and I were lost in the beauty of it all...and, at a point I recalled Susanne asking me, 'what is everybody watching?' after about the tenth time she had asked me. All I could hear were the sounds of families having lunch, cats meeowing, far off cars honking and of course scooters. When I finally snapped out of it and heard her question, I looked around. I conciously took in the street and its inhabitants to realize everybody was watching TV's. In all the stores we passed - TV's being stared at by store keepers and their customers - their eyes glued to the TV. At that moment I remembered the previous late night clubbers at Torpedo talking about the soccer matches. "They must be watching the soccer they were all cheering about last night." Susanne looked at me. Then I looked at the storekeepers - no cheering, no nothing. "Let's go check it out" Susanne said. I shrugged my shoulders and we approached a Pizzeria. I was thirsty, "could use some water." On my left two American teens. One was talking about how his father had been in the Air Force once upon a time - war, of all things, was their topic of conversation. A young girl walked past me crying. Soccer? So, I looked up to the TV as everybody else was doing. I peered closer. My neck and chin jutted forward and my eyebrows twitched up a bit. I was watching billowing smoke hiding rising into a blue sky? The backdrop of what looked like to be the city I grew up in? The city I where I graduated from NYU. The city were my family was. Was I watching a movie? My brain could not make any conclusion but my eyes were beginning to. I looked to the two American teens, not understanding and casually directed my question, as if I could not have really just seen what I thought I was seeing on the small 12"x12" shady screen, "what's going on?" The first guy looked to me and said - "that's the twin towers in N-Y-C." The other guy's head fell as he said, they just fell down - two planes hit them." They walked away. I looked to Susanne who was already looking at me. I ripped my video camera from my case and filmed until my stomach could not take it anymore and my body began to shake. My knees became week. Susanne and I sat at a cafe'. The waiter set a beer down at our table. "I lived in New York. I love America. Terrible. Terrible." At that moment, Susanne, being from Sweden, felt what it was like to be an American. This in Italy - halfway across the world. My head was spinning - 'what was happening.' Then the cell phones ringing. It was not hard to pick out the Amercians. All of us were recieving calls from back home. We just sat there, all of us crying at that cafe for hours, wondering, wondering, wondering. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes. I decided to really teach myself about my religion/culture as it relates to the world. To take in depth time to learn about others I had claimed to know about when in actaulity knew nothing about. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Just when you think all is going just fine with your life, the world, history can repeat itself in ugly ways - WAR. We need to be concious of who we share this planet with but at the same time defend our pursuit of happiness and self determination. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I have been a widow for nine years and on 9/11 I lost my only child, Dominique Pandolfo, age 27. On the evening of September 10, Dominique had started her first MBA class at NYU Stern Business School. She phoned me when she got to her Hoboken apartment to let me know how excited she was about school and that she met some fellow classmates that also lived in Hoboken and shared a cab when they got off the PATH train. Of course, being a mother, I was happy that she didn't have to travel alone, but I dare not tell her this. After all she lived in the East Village and nothing happened...she would be fine in Hoboken! Little did we know. During our phone conversation she mentioned she was being picked up by a car service on Tuesday morning...she had a meeting at the WTC. Never having traveled downtown from Hoboken before (she moved on 9/1) the car service picked her up at 8:00am and dropped her off at 8:20am. As I sat in my office on Tuesday morning a fellow worker's husband called to say a plane hit the Tower. Shortly after that he called back again to say the second Tower was hit. By this time we had the radio on and as I passed the radio it dawned on me that "OH MY GOD DOMINIQUE IS DOWN THERE TODAY." I guess a mother's intuition told me I was never going to see her again. This was a vibrant, intelligent, self-confident young lady that would have made a difference in this world. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That my daughter, along with all the other innocent people, should not have died in vain. Everything possible should be done to prevent anything like this from ever happening again. I saw the first Tower hit by the plane and live, I was second plane hit the second Tower. I was a very sad day U.S. For me is sad, for those in NY it's worse. Share your experience. i was watching the news that morning , and geting my daughter ready for school,and i was watching what i thought was a bad dream .i could'nt believe my eyes , it was horrible what i was actually seeing i never ever seen nothing like that in my life , and i hope i never will.when i seen the first tower on fire i said oh my god , and when the other plane hit i thought what was going on is this real i just could not believe my eyes . this is surely one day in my life i will never forget , so horrible and tragic, and senseless . Living in California, I witnessed it "from afar", only to gradually come to know of friends whose experience was much closer. Thankfully, I know of no victim who was a friend or relative, but some friends were and are very much involved. As a minister, it was my decision to have services of remembrance and support for people who just wanted to gather. We'll do that again this year. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life hasn't changed too much, except that my understanding of Islam has deepened considerably. I was pretty ignorant of the varieties of Islam, and as a result of 9/11, I have worked on remediation of that lack. As a Christian minister, I am not naive about human nature, but it was not clear to me until studying just how different the origins of Islam were from those of Christianity or Judaism. These discoveries helped me understand what happened to a degree; though the willingness of the terrorists to target noncombatants directly is still a mystery to me. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I have become much more aware of the many ways people seek to get their way and force others to do things their way - not just through terrorism, but through controlling who gets to speak, write, and influence others. The notion that there are no noncombatants is something we had better take seriously, because Muslim terrorists are not the only ones who believe it. No. My feelings haven't changed. It symbolizes a country whose most important ideals are freedom and tolerance of differences with which one dies not agree. Our School has televisions in every classroom and all my teachers had the t.v. on and were watching the events as the second plane crashed into the building. One way that it did effect my life is, after I am done with school I am going to go to the service and because of these terrorist attacks we are or will be at war. Like how the New York Fire Department rescued as many people as they did. Also how people donated the money that they did to help the victims of Sept. 11th.
