NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was on my way back to work with donuts for my co-workers. I heard the news on the radio about the planes hitting the WTC. A few minutes later it was reported that the Pentagon was hit. I couldn't believe what I was hearing! We were under attack.... something I never ever would have thought would happen. I kept wondering what would be next. I thought there would also be a lot more. I was extremely scared, especially living near Washington DC and having family working for the governtment. I then thought about my family up in Staten Island, NY. My cousin is an EMT and I knew he would be called in for assistance. I couldn't get through to my family to see how they were up there and it took over 24 hours to find out if my cousin was ok. Thank God he was. I didn't get to actually speak to him for 1 week because he was so busy working so many unbelievable hours. He didn't arrive to the towers until the 2nd tower began to fall. I am really happy that he is still alive and am so incredible proud of my cousin. He risked his life getting to the towers through bomb threats in order to help anyone that needed it. I still can't believe all of this happened. It seems like a bad dream. So many people... so many of them gone. This wasn't supposed to happen. My generation (X) has heard so much about Pearl Harbor from our grandparents and Vietnam from our parents. Yeah, we had our share of attaks on other countries but nothing seemed to compare to what the generations before us had. This wasn't supposed to happen... not to us, not to innocent Americans on our soil. But... it did. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have gotten much closer with my extended family. We talk a lot more often now. I feel a lot more scared than I used to. Who knows what could happen next... that is what frightens me. I try not to let that fear get in the way of my functioning though.. I fly, I go to the city when I want and I live my life. I think the whole country and our government felt a sense of security... that we couldn't be harmed. That our intelligence could catch anything... it can't. Before 9-11 our flag stood for something of course... but now it seems like more. It's true meaning... what it was created for... has been revealed. Well, at least to me. It was just another symbol beforehand. Like the dove is for peace or the woman shape is for the ladies bathroom. I now feel proud to fly the flag, proud to show that I am an American. I was at work and watched play by play as one plane hit and then another interruption by the network that another plane had hit the other world trade center building. Horrific breach of national security. I drove to New York one and a half weeks later and witnessed first hand what remained. What stays in my memory most was the ash covered buildings and the smell. The smell of everything that had desinigrated, everything.... Worst smell ever in my life. I had arrived by the subway and when I returned into the subway I had an immediate panic that something deadly would happen before I could get out of the subway that day. I arrived at my destination fine but the impending fear coupled with what I had just seen seriously questioned my confidence of safety. I had never flown on a plane before and approximately two weeks after this I got on an airplane to Washington through the Baltimore, MD airport. I witnessed the security in the airports which consisted of military men and many security checks. At this time I saw the destruction to the pentagon. I was not afraid to fly but I was very concious of what was going on around me. This anniversary of the attacks is significant to me. I had the opportunity to witness the pentagon and what was left of the world trade centers in New York. What are we doing sitting at our desks this morning? I was in school in my chorus class when my principal made a school announcement over the intercom that there had been attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Being so close to D.C, a lot of students had family members working at the Pentagon. My dad goes there everyso often because of his job so that was one of the first things i thought about. Later on when I got an early dissmissal note in chemistry i could only think the worse. It turned out my mom was just really worried and wanted me home. So i went home and watched the events on T.V. My mother has become really worried about terrorist attacks and put a lot of restrictions on my mobility formy own safety. I remember and will always remember exactly where I was when I first heard the news of what had happened. I was returning from the University of Sussex towards Eastbourne (South East England). At first disbelief of what had happened, and only realising the true horror of the events when seeing the news at home. Realisation that today was the second anniversary has inclined me that I have not yet paid my respects to the victims properly. I turned on the TV hoping to find out what had happened to a refugee boat that had apparently run aground on Ashmore Reef. Australia's uncompassionate response to refugee boats and the turning away of the Tampa was foremost in my mind, and was a source of anger and discomfort. Instead, my TV showed smoke billowing from the WTC. When they said a plane had hit the building I immediately thought of a book I'd read of a plane hitting the Empire State Building in the 1940s. I thought it must be an horrendous accident, and couldn't work out how it could have happened. I had visited New York in 1996 and had stood at the top of both the Empire State and the WTC. Suddenly, looking at that TV, I was back in New York. I was American too. I couldn't speak, and could only watch. Then, live, I saw the second plane come into shot and fly straight into the second building. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was instantly obvious this was no accident. What had been unbelievably horrible was now something far beyond that. The world had changed, and the world's most powerful nation was being brought to its knees as I watched. I phoned people. I remember saying "turn on your TV. It doesn't matter what channel. It's on all of them." I was watching most of the night. I remember the towers falling, and it was like a nightmare. I didn't cry until about three days later. I was cleaning out a cupboard and a photo fell to the floor. It was a shot I'd taken from the top of the World Trade Centre, looking down. It was pretty much the view some of the people who jumped or fell to their deaths would have seen as they fell. I cried for a long time. In the rest of September I was glued to the TV at every possible moment, but I never heard anyone ask the obvious question: "why was America attacked?" Nobody discussed the reasons for terrorism. Nobody asked why America, and by the obvious extrapolation, the West generally, was hated. The talk was all retaliation, attack and war. I felt angry too, but I wanted to know the reasons, and nobody else seemed to want to know. Osama bin Laden's name was mentioned within hours, and a possible attack on Afghanistan was proposed within hours. Nobody commented on the fact the terrorists almost all came from Saudi Arabia. There was idiotic 'evidence' such as a terrorist's passport that survived a plane crash, explosion, fire and building collapse, and was found on top of the mound intact and unsinged. Sure. I thought it strange when I watched (live) George Bush, at a school, being told of the attack. On the other side of the world, apparently I knew long before he did!! I still think that's pretty weird. I remember George W Bush going on TV, I think on September 12, and saying "Go Shopping". That was in a sense more shocking even than September 11. Go shopping? Men were sorting debris at Ground Zero into buckets of rubble and buckets of body parts, and people were supposed to go shopping? Buy anything, (because nobody needs to be told to buy essentials). Just go shopping. I realised then that Western civilisation, with its rampant consumption, its lack of concern for the price other people pay for our wealth, its lack of concern for the planet or the environment, and its love of corporations and big business at the expense of ordinary working people, is degenerate. Money (especially for the rich) is all that matters. The people who died were expendable provided the people left behind go on shopping. I realised what I was watching was beyond propaganda -- it was brainwashing. I turned my TV off in October and haven't watched it since. I read widely now, and listen to the radio. My life is suprisingly much richer because I've dispensed with the TV. There's nothing I miss. I'm frequently amazed at the rubbish people come out with after watching TV. They obviously haven't thought anything through at all, and are just parroting what they've heard. Everyone around me seems to be talking in slogans and jingles. It's actually quite frightening. Those wonderful, courageous people who went in to rescue people; the firemen and policemen, and all the others who rose to the pinnacles of what it means to be human. It brought out the best and worst of people. We should also remember G.W.Bush saying "Go Shopping", and really get to the bottom of what that meant and the ramifications of that. It still makes me ill -- seeing those towers was the most awful thing I've seen, and the official response from the White House was "go shopping". What I've turned against is the arrogance, the bellicose talk, the blindness to causes of terrorism, the blindness to the sufferings of others who have been victims of terrorist attacks for many years, the warmongering, the superiority complex, the global sherrif attitude. (Australia has been doing plenty of all that too, so I've become anti-Australian too.) I didn't think much of G.W.Bush before September 11, but I think far less of him now. I think you'd be much better off with a man of intelligence at the helm, and the world would be much safer. I feel like the boy in the Emperor's new clothes fable -- wake up America, your President is a moron with an IQ of about 90! As for your flag -- I think the planet would be better off without flags. There are huge problems on this planet and we can only solve them through unity. War solves nothing. Hatred solves nothing. Flags signify separation and superiority -- neither of which is helpful. My greatest wish would be that September 11 was the beginning of the end of hatred, and the beginning of a period where the world worked as one to try to find solutions for our many problems. Well I was sleeping whn the first plane hit and I woke up when my ad came in to tell me that a planewas hiacked and hit one of the twin towers. First of all, I didn't even nw what the twintowers were. I ran into my mom and dads room to really see what was going on. I watched the debris cover the street, people running every which way, just covered in dust and screaming. That day I went to school and I could tell that the teachers wanted to teach but they really didn't have it in hem, their hearts were to beat up. Nothing was ever the same after September 11, 2001. I had volunteered to be locked up for the MD drive we were having in town. I was still collecting my bail money to donate when someone said to turn the TV on a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We all watched in disbelief the news replaying the plane slamming into the building. It was totally unbelieveable. I remember crying and feeling helpless that I couldn't do something. I lived in Michigan.I was a sophmore at Plymouth-Canton High School. I started the day as usually. I went to my first to classes, which by my second class, the terror had all ready begun. I arrived to my 3rd pr. class to discover the t.v. in the room was on and tuned to CNN. I found that to be wierd. Then as i took my seat, I began to understand what had happened. CNN kept playing the scene of the first plane crashing in to the first tower. I remeber the news achors not know what to report as for why this was happing, just that the first tower had been hit. My teacher wanted to start class so the t.v. was turned off, but thanks to the other teachers who were still watching the event unfold, one of them came in and informed us that again the second tower had been hit. Now my class was confused and wanted to know more, but class still continued. Then agian the same teacher came in a informed us that the Pentagon had been hit. By this time 3rd pr. was over and I was at lunch. I gather with some of my friends and all agreed that we wanted to figuire out what is going on. In all most every class we pasted the t.v. was on and tuned to the news, and you could hear even in the news achors voice, that what was happening has horrific and unbelievable. I finally stopped in a history class that had to big screen t.v.'s and stood and watch the pictures that came on the screen. I saw people run, hurt, bloody, the planes crashing, firemen and police men. It was hard to imagen that what I was seeing was a city. More than that a city that I knew and had visited a few summers ago. It was hard to imagen such a painful, scary event was happening here in the U.S. and that it wasn't an accident. Everyone at my school was talking about the planes crashing in to the Trade Towers. Many sharing their memories of past visits there and how they had a family memeber there or near there. That day we all that of it as 4 comerical planes accidentally crashing. But soon the next day in turned into terrorist attacks agaisnt the United States of America. That right there, terrorist attacks, scaried me the most and opened another world to us in in the U.S. That event changed me. I realize now where I live and how I need to live my life. All of a sudden, she stopped me and told me what was being said on the news about an airplane hitting the World Trade Center. I was at work at my office in Huntsville, AL when I received the phone call from one of our truck drivers. I usually came in a half and hour before everyone else and hadn't turned on the radio in the office so I was clueless as to what had happened. I couldn't believe it. My first reaction was "yeah, right." I turned on the radio and in the meantime several more of my co-workers arrived. We listened to the unfolding events as broadcast by Peter Jennings. As it became apparent that this was no accident, we called our boss who had not yet left her home and she agreed to bring a television set with her. The rest of the day was one of utter disbelief and confusion. I believe we all went from dumbfounded to angry to hurt to unbelieveable grief and confusion. I couldn't wait to get home to my husband and our houseguest. The telephone rang constantly with family and friends making sure we knew of the latest. Many also wanted to share our common fear of a local attack. Living in the Huntsville area, we shared the fear of an attack on Redstone Arsenal/Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA) and also on Brown's Ferry Nuclear Power Plant. Many of us quietly dismissed these fears simply because our already frought minds could not handle the notion and would have been in overload. Not wanting to clog up the phone system even more, I sent an E-Mail to a friend of mine inquiring about a mutual friend who lives in Manhattan. I had prayed that he was out of town or had gotten to work early as his office is across the river in New Jersey. Fortunately for us, he was out of town on vacation with his family who was visiting from Germany. I also received several phone calls from friends overseas expressing their disbelief. Many also expressed their concern as to whether or not President Bush (whom some refered to as "your cowboy president") would decide to attack. It's still not clear to me why, but many expressed hope that we would not attack. Perhaps it was fear that a monstrous beast would be unleashed, perhaps it was true fear of another world war. I do not know. Myself, I was torn as well. Part of me wanted revenge, wanted to blow Afghanistan off the map. Then the humane side of me worried about the innocent people in this poor unfortunate country. What would happen to them? Clearly, however, I could not come up with, and still cannot, an alternative solution. It was time to put my faith in those elected officials whose terrible duty it was to decide the fate of so many. I still do not envy the terrible weight they must feel trying to protect the people of this country. To this day, I still cannot believe these events transpired and cannot completely come to terms with the idea that further attacks are not that unlikely. May God bless us all. I'm not nearly as trusting as I once was, which perhaps isn't a bad thing. For me, however, it's not necessarily been a negative change. I grew up in a major city so I instinctively "watched my back". I am also very naieve, however and this has changed some of that. I also have a greater respect for our elected officials and realize again just how important it is to exercise our right to vote - to ensure that the people we feel can do the best job in any circumstance are the ones taking care of our best interests. Fortunately for me, this was not a concern for me at the time, but I have also learned that it is important for us to support those in office, to pray for them, whether or not they are the ones we chose or not. We all have access to our elected officials via telephone, mail and even E-Mail and we need to show our support or outrage - let our voices be heard. For far too long we've lived our hedonistic lives, caring only about ourselves and in the moment. It's time for that to change - to return to the "small town community" atmosphere where we all show genuine concern for each other. It not only helps our communities, it helps us recognize outsiders who might bring us harm (and by outsiders I don't necessarily mean people from foreign lands.) NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The way we all banded together. How for at least one day we all felt related - like one giant family. Most importantly, we need to remember all the people who have put their lives on the line for our lives and for our freedom - from the brave firefighters and police officers in New York to the military members who have volunteered their lives so that we might continue to enjoy the freedom our forefathers so bravely fought for. When I walked out of my science class during the last period of the school day and heard the gossip concerning the possibility that two jets had crashed in to the twin world trade center towers, I ignorantly took it as common news, figuring that planes crash just about everyday and these sad occurences are a part of our lives. But when I thougt about it a moment longer, I realized that this was not just a regular crash, two jets had hit the two twin towers in New York-not only two of the tallest, but also two of the most significant and influential buildings in the world-and minutes later they had fallen. Worst yet, it was a working day, and the only way any of the people inside(not to mention the flight victims and later fireman)could have survived was to escape before the collapsing skyscraper crushed them. When these terrifying events were proven on national television, I began to realize that this was a huge moment, one that would be remembered for endless years. I had seen with my own eyes history on T.V. I probably watched the channel for a few hours and simply could not pull my eyes away from the disgusting scenes I saw in front of me. I don't really remember much after that, probably because all this information was spinning rapidly around me. I dont think my family and I discussed much of it that night because it was recent news and we were shock, just as one msay be after they lose a family member. You simply want to listen to your heart and collect your thoughts. It was nothard for me to move on because I had no personal afflictions with relation to the event. Now my idea of history is the study of people in the past and there affects on their world and our current world. So when around 3000 people from around the world, who have contributed in some way to our growing nation, die, and when two buildings which have contributed to our nation's economy, and stood as symbols of the great place our country is, fall, I consider that to be an important event. September 11, 2001 is officially in the past and we are just starting to become effected by it. I will not be suprised when this event is written in history books to be published in the future, sad as it may be. And hopefully by then, it wont just state the event and how it occured, but it will honor the people who died fighting for their as well as others lives. I mentioned it in my prayers at night in my bed, and discussed it continually in class for the days to come. I know the economy has fallen and realize families tragic losses, therefore I will from now on try and contribute to fundraisers. Regretfully, the day has begun to fade in my memory as I am constantly busy, but I think as the week of September 11, 2002 comes along, I will continue to pray on a daily basis and hopefully continue to do so for as long as I possibly can. I do know that I have seen thew world change dramatically, people treating others as equals and so on. I hope that I will begin to follow this example as the next September 11 rolls on. The event has probably changed me in one way though. I used to love to fly on planes, I would get ready for it, I would enjoy it and I would forget the vacation and anticipate the flight home. But this event has changed that so dramatically, I know fear the possibilites of danger in an airport and on a plane and the realization strikes me. But not only in airports, I can literally feel the violence of people around me in the world. I was actually an intern at the Smithsonian when Sept. 11 happened, at the National Museum of American History. A student at Cornell University, I was in DC for the Cornell-in-Washington semester-long program. It was my 4th day at work. It was a beautiful Tuesday morning. I woke up at 8am and my roommates had left Today on the TV when they left for their internships. I got ready and just a few minutes before I walked out the door, I heard about the first crash. I thought nothing of it. Just some idiot who nicked the building. I went to work and met the other intern in the department for the first time, Kristine. We waited for our supervisor, Bill, and when he arrived, we went into his office because he wanted to call his wife for updates. She informed him of the Pentagon crash and we went to a corner office on our floor to see a huge mass of black smoke filling the sky. Later that night, when I found out that the Pentagon was actually 3 miles away, I couldn't believe it. All that smoke made it look so much closer. I was confused and scared and didn't know what to do. Fortunately, one of the women in the department, Shelley, suggested that I go home and, being a Cornell alum, she walked me back to the Cornell building in Dupont Circle. I felt safer once I got home but still I was scared. I grew up in New York City and my family was still there. It was very difficult, but I managed to get in contact with them. It was the first time I can ever remember hearing my mother cry. My best friend's uncle is a New York City fireman. I had met him a few summers before and I remember him saying how much he loved his job. A few days later, she told me about how much he hated having to go back to Ground Zero day after day and search for dead bodies. I walked around in a daze for the next few days. The reality of the tragedy hit me when I found out that another friend's uncle, also a New York City fireman, had been on the 34th floor when the building came down. They found his body 2 days later. The aura and false sense of security is broken. We can no longer fool ourselves into thinking that everyone loves America. Fire Fighters, Police Officers, and Medics should be remembered for the courageous attitude, by rescuing and help save lives that where in the building! I was driving to Richmond, VA when I heard it on the radio. I hadn't had the television or radio on before I left the house around 9:00 am so I didn't know anything was going on. When I became aware, the second tower of the World Trade Center had been hit. Instinctively, I knew it was terrorists. They had come back to finish the job they started in 1993 when they bombed the World Trade Center the first time. Then I heard that something had hit the Pentagon. My daughter and son-in-law are Police Officers at the Pentagon and could be anywhere in the building. I started to pray. Since I wasn't sure what was happening, I picked up my cell phone and immediately began dialing my daughter's pager. I couldn't get through, so I began dialing my office number to ensure that my colleagues were alright and could tell me something. Again, I couldn't get through. My hands were shaking and I could bearly drive the car. I was on the verge of hysteria not knowing what was going on or whether my family was alive or dead. By the time I reached my destination, around 10:00 am, I could barely keep it togther. The television was on and I could see the Pentagon burning. I thought the world was coming to and end. When I saw the building I began sobbing and saying that I work there - my daughter and son-in-law are Police Officers - my co-workers - I don't know if they are alive or dead. Everyone was so nice to me. They took me aside and asked me if I wanted to call someone. So, I called my daughter's pager again and I got through to leave a message. I was somewhat relieved that her pager was still working. She called me at 12:30 pm and told me she was alright and that Bill (her husband) was a witness to the plane going into the building. She had heard his voice on the radio calling it in. She was crying and saying that people were jumping out of the windows on fire. I asked if she knew anything about my co-workers and she said she didn't. I felt so helpless and guilty for not being there. It wasn't until later that day that I knew that my co-workers were okay. It was the worst and longest day of my life. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I believe I am a different person because of September 11th. I am very grateful that those I love were spared. Since I work in the Pentagon, I am reminded of it everyday. I am proud that I am an American and have worked for the Department of Defense for 26 years. I think I love the U.S. even more now than I did before September 11th. I appreciate our freedoms and way of life more than ever. We are so fortunate. I make sure that everytime I leave the house I tell my loved ones how much they mean to me. I never thought about whether or not I would give my life for my country. I know now that I would. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we should remember that freedom isn't "free." It has a cost. And all the innocent people who lost their lives that day paid a dear price for our freedom and way of life. I believe they are all heroes, like everyone else who has died for what we believe in, and should be remembered as such. Especially those on Flight 93 in Pennsylvania who died so others wouldn't. We should also remember that there are people out there who hate us and what we believe in and we should never let our guard down. Yes we have flown the American flag and have ever since. Everytime I see the American flag I am reminded of how lucky I am to be an American. It was just an accident of birth. I live in California so when I found out about what had happened I was just getting out of bed to get ready for school. When I first woke up I had no idea what was going on I just went about my morning like I usually do. I got up, got dressed, did my hair, did my make-up and went out to go get something to eat. When I first walked into the kitchen I found it odd that no one was there because my brother and sister are usually out there. I poured my cereal and went to sit at the table when I found my brother and sister in the den watching T.V. which they normally dont do. The look on there face was pure shock. I didnt know what to think. I walked out there and saw our beautiful twin towers up in flames. My heart sank and I was speechless. I got goose bumps on my whole body and for the first time in my life I felt completly helpless. I couldnt understand why someone would want to do something so horrible to our country. Of course I still had to attened school. When I got to school I could not believe the sight. Everyone was in tears walking around like the world had ended. It was the worst feeling ever. In all my classes we watch the news all day. Even though everyone was going through the same thing I felt alone with nothing to say to anyone. It was a day in history I will never forget. It was the worst day of my life when the Towers fell on September 11, 2001. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life changed in many ways. I had a friend in my community who had a father that was on the plane that hit the first tower. He was on his way to come and see his son. His son was heart broken and we knew we had to do something. We went around the neighboorhoods and stood in front of numerous stores collecting donations for the red cross in honor of his father. We ended up collectiong over 300 dollars. We presented it to his son and it brought him to tears. He was so touched that we thought of him in such a way. I will always remeber how we helped him. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that everyone should remember the people who risked their lives to help save the victims. We are very lucky to have so many people in love with our country enought to risk their lives to save others. Those who passed will never be forgotten and will always be seen as a hero in everyone's eyes. Those that survived are so well looked up to and will alway be seen as heros also. I heard the announcement that a plane flew into the World Trade Centr over the loudspeaker at the end of my Math class and passed the attack over as a typical plane crash. When I saw the footage later on in my Government class I began to realize the severity and implications of the situation. The quickness of the entire event seemed a bit unreal, but as the day winded on, I was grasping that thousands were really dead and that our government could definitely respond with force. Over the next couple of days, I watched an unprecedented amount of news in an attempt to find a new enemy that I could pin my anger on. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Although I was saddened by the loss of life from the terrorist attacks, my life has not been changed that much. The closest way the attacks affected me was a momentary fear that a large war would ensue and I would be drafted, but after a few weeks this fear subsided. I am concerned with the success and safety of the American troops in Afghanistan and I have spent personal time debating with myself on what the just response to the attacks is. Despite these concerns, I have not experienced any major emotional changes, nor do I fear for my safety. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? September 11th should not only be remembered for the loss of life, but also as the day a "sleeping giant" was awakened. The complacency of our country was made obvious when many people expressed that the attack was unbelievable and they did not think it could happen. Warning memos were ignored and terrorist camps were left unattacked. The attack should lead to a national policy that eliminates threat when discovered, instead of allowing them to become lethal, because of indecisive public opinion. I did not fly the flag after September 11th, because I did not fly it before. I did not feel that I had to prove anything by flying a flag. Trying to turn a terrorist attack that killed thousands of people into a positive event because of an ephemeral sense of patriotism is ignoring reality. The truth is that our country was attacked, and temporarily defeated, and thousands died. Tragedy does not increase my patriotism.
