September 11th will definatly be in the newer history books. I doubt anybody will ever forget what happened if they were old enough to understand. Yes, definatly! I am a lot more cautious of people, like before I could see an Arab and not think a thing of it but now if I see one I get suspicious. Also now I'm afraid of planes. Everything that happened should be remembered. Everbody should learn though that not every body from Afghanistan is bad, or not everybody that is darker or is not native to our country is bad. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? My family actually hung our flag out 2 days before September 11th. And yes, my feeling are definately different, I now feel very respectful to our flag and I get very senstive about really good American Songs. I want to see the flag on every house but I don't. I think everybody should have an American flag because we should show that we are proud to be Americans! NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Actually, as I witnessed what happened, I wasnt aware that history was being made. In fact, I didnt pay much attention. I woke up that morning, and turned on the television while I was eating breakfast. The coverage was on a lot of the channels, and at that time, only the first plane had struck the towers. The news reports then said that the plane was of the one-engine propeller variety, and when I saw the live video of the tower, it seemed fine. They also mentioned terrorist attacks a few times, but the general consensus then seemed to be that it was just an unfortunate accident. Surely there would have been loss of life, and I was sorry for that, but when I stepped out of the door it didnt weigh to heavily on my mind. I rode the public bus to school, and so I didnt even hear that a second plane had hit until I arrived on campus. It was early, and there were only a few kids there, but all of them had heard or seen something. I talked with a few, and there were many conflicting stories, but all agreed that a second plane had struck while I was en route to school. We spent the hour or so before school wandering around looking for a radio or television to keep us updated, but found none. I had a test first period, but I finished early and asked my teacher if I could use the classroom Internet connection to find out what had happened. At that time, both towers were still standing, and I realized that the situation had become much more serious than I had originally thought. By now, they had determined that the planes were large passenger aircraft from various east coast airports. It was then that it really began to dawn on me how many people had been killed. Even at that point, it was shaping into one of the worst disasters we had ever experienced. As I went through various classes, the trade towers were the main topic of conversation. I remember that my chemistry class had a television in one of the rooms, and the majority of the faculty and students in the science building were watching coverage of what had happened. One faculty member just stood in front of the television shaking his head and muttering "look at that shit" over and over again. He summed up the general mood of everyone, one of complete and total disbelief. Terrorists? They were something out of the movies, or something you read about happening on the other side of the world. Not here, its not possible. It was then that the reports of the other planes hitting the Pentagon and crashing into a field began to filter in. I cant remember when it was that the towers collapsed, but I do remember watching the collapse of the World Trade Center No. 7 building. Those images are ones that I think stick in my mind the most and I know Ill have them with me for a while. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I think that it is a testament to the strength of the America people that my life hasn't changed. That's not to say that I personally have been unaffected by this tragedy. That would simply not be true. Emotionally, I think it has matured me a great deal, along with the rest of the country. However, there are no men in suits asking to see my identification on the streets, there aren't government checkpoints on the roads, and none of our other freedoms have been restricted. The only change outside of ourselves is the fact that there is now an American flag in the window of every car and business. As far as internal changes go, I think the national psyche has been forever altered. Patriotism is a theme that is saturating every facet of our lives now, from the television we watch to the magazines we read to any aspect of our culture. Our country's resolve has been strengthened beyond measure, and we have a sense of common experience that brings us together; a trauma that bridges race, religion, and status to affect us all. In the early morning hours of September 11th I got the chance to sleep in because I had taken the day off from work to study for an American History exam that was schedule for later that evening at my college. I woke up and walked the dogs outside. When I came back into my apartment, the telephone was ringing and I picked it up. It was my fiance calling and he told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I turned on the TV and my first vision was of a tower with black smoke billowing from it. My first thought was an optimistic one, I said to myself, "Oh boy, this is going to be a long day of watching helicopters trying to get people out from the rooftop and how the heck are the firemen going to put out the fire?" In the instant after that thought, the second tower was hit and I screamed on the phone, "a bomb just went off in the second tower!" not being able to see that a plane had struck the tower. I got off the phone with my fiance and went to our bedroom window to see if I could see anything. We lived in Neptune City, NJ at the time, which is right off of the Atlantic Ocean in Monmouth County. I don't know why I went to look, but soon I saw why my instinct was telling me to look. The blue sky with white beautiful clouds that I had seen just a few minutes earlier, was covered by a dark grey "cloud" that swept across the sky from the ocean. That scared me. I realized just how close I was to NYC and I started to worry at that point. I thought it was the end of the world and that more was going to happen that day. I called my mom and my coworkers and was the first to inform them of what had happened. I told my mom to please go home and that my fiance and his coworkers were all leaving work for the day. I was talking to my boss on the phone when the first tower (the second tower struck) started to collaspe. I really started crying then, it seemed very real and very frightening. After the first tower collasped, I knew the second one would be next to collaspe as did the TV reporters so it was just a matter of when. When the reports came in that 2 other plans were also hijacked and heading towards D.C. I went into "survival mode", or "shock". I didn't cry anymore, I had no expression on my face, all my muscles were very tense and I had pain all around my neck and upper arms. I was just waiting for the next thing to happen. I kept thinking, "what's going to happen next?" "is this it?" "is it over yet?". My fiance came home and he was glued to the tv. He would display anger at times and that would worry me. I didn't know how people were reacting and I didn't want to be home with someone who was going to flip out. I wanted to crawl into bed and hide under the covers, he was ready to go out and kick some terrorist ass. I learned the big difference between Type A and Type B personalities that day. I wanted to run and hide, he wanted to fight. Thankfully, he stayed put and while the hours pass and he remained glued to the TV, I did crawl into bed around 2:00pm and slept until 5:00pm and was glad that nothing else had happened. All college classes were cancelled for the evening so luckily, I didn't have to worry about my test. The next morning, driving to work, I kept looking at all the people driving in cars, I was looking for their facial expressions. Were they crying? Were they scared? Did they know someone who had died? Did they work in the city? I wanted to know all about them. I went to work in my college library and I remember professors coming in and they would start crying when we talked about what had happened. I never thought I see that and it made me feel scared that even people who had lived through wars and seen terrible things would be breaking down. When all the kids got into the class she explaned to us what has happen to the World Trade Center. When I heard that, I was completely shocked. I just couldn't believe it. As the day went on, I heard more and more details about the attact. I heard that some minutes after the first plane hit the World Trade Center that another plane hit the building. I was just stunned. After the day of school,I was talking to my parents and they said that this isn't the first time that the World Trade Center was attacked. How the victims of the 4th plane that crashed in Pennslyvania sacrificed themselves to overtake the plane from the terrorists and crash the plane to save thousands of lives. I was at work in Gainesville, VA when I heard that the 1st plane hit the Tower, then the 2nd, then the Pentagon. I called my mother who lives in Dumfries and told her. She immeditatly turned on the TV. I contacted a friend who normally works at Reagan National, luckly he was off that day. I called my son at college to make sure he was ok. I remember my 2nd son calling me on his cell saying he could see a black cloud over the area in Dumfries where we live - 25 miles south of the Pentagon. I work in a Sales office, and can remember clearly that we had very few calls the rest of the day, even though it was our busy season. At Boy Scouts that night, we learned that a neighbor of our Assistant Scoutmaster was missing. My daughter's friend's mother was also one of the victims. Even though we were not directly affected, we have close friends who were. Both of the Scout troops my children belong to did a car wash for the victims of the attacks. And we pay more attention to the little things. 30 years ago I was ready to join the military and do what needed to be done during the Vietnam war. Today, I am afraid of my sons and daughter being called up. I am recording news articles, poems, pictures and other items for this year to help my children in their final years in high school. I feel a "loss of innocence" and regret that my children will never enjoy the same freedoms I did, even though we as a people are struggling to maintain as much of them as possible. It's more than the loss of lives and the destruction of the Twin Towers. If history is forgotten, it's destined to be repeated. We need to be vigilant, yet kind. If nothing else is remembered, remember the feelings that came out of the attacks, the caring, the outpourings of help, the reactions of the world and the help given to us. Then at full staff until the end of the year. It still flys on holidays, and we have a flag on each car. I was or was supposed to be in 4th period study hall when I heard about a plane flying into one of the twin towers. I had a pass from 3rd period so I decided to take my time getting to class. Right before I was about to walk to class I noticed a dark room with a tv on and 4 teachers standing around it. On the tv was replays of the plane flying into the second tower. I was sipping a cup of coffee while talking on the phone with our county forrester about some problems we were having with pine bark beetles killing our beautiful, mature pine trees. I was tuned to Fox News Channel on the cable, as I do every morning. The first plane had already hit by the time I turned on the TV, but at the time no one realized it was due to terrorists. Suddenly, I saw the second plane heading directly for the second tower. I said into the phone, "Oh my God, there's a SECOND plane that's going to hit!" It was almost as though I couldn't even believe my own words as they came out of my mouth. I knew immediately that we were under attack. I couldn't take my eyes off the TV for the next several days. I've always been a patriotic citizen. I cry every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner played or sung, and I always display our flag on special occasions. But when this happened, it felt as though my heart had swelled to twice its normal size with pride in the way this country pulled together. And I'm angry, too. Angry with those who would tear this country apart by trying to convince the rest of us that this chaos was somehow caused by our own hands. I sometimes want to shake these people to wake them up to reality. This isn't some game we've been drawn into. This is all-out war, and for people to demonstrate and blame this country is an outrage. I'd like to send them all on a one-way trip to Afghanastan to see if they'd be allowed to voice such strong anti-government sentiments over there! I'd like to remember how, for just a few moments anyway, this country came together as one, to fight against a common enemy. No longer were we something-dash Americans, we were all just simply Americans. And we were hurt in the worst way simply for our love of freedom. We all need to be reminded of the sacrifices some are willing to make so the rest of us can have the right to demonstrate and criticize in almost any manner we choose. The firefighters, police and port authority personnel who went into Hell to save innocent lives, probably knowing they'd never come out but went in anyway, must not ever be forgotten for their heroism. And our military personnel who still to this day try to route out the murderers must also have the comfort to know that their country stands behind their efforts each and every moment of each and every day. My father almost lost his life during World War II, and others weren't so lucky as to come home, just so people the likes of Jane Fonda and other non-patriotic radicals can exercise their First Ammendment rights under the guise of free speech. If she had lived under the Taliban's rule, Ms. Fonda would've been stoned to death for her beliefs simply because she's a woman. I wonder if she and her ilk ever think about that? It's not really all that bad here in the United States as some of them try to make you believe. My algebra teacher came in the classroom and told the class about the planes hitting the two twin towers. At fist when he said it I didn't, it took a while to sink in. It was'nt until I got that afternoon I realized that it was real. For a moment I was just breathe taken. Ithought it was just a terrible that happen that day, and it will never be forgotten. The intercom kept going on and off then finally Mr.Thacker got on and said turn on the tv's right now and do it first. So we did and we were watching the t.v for about 20min then our teacher was getting mad so she turned it off and our whole classroom was talking about it. The reason she turned it off because she was a social studies teacher. So we waited for the bell to ring so we could go to lunch. I parked behind the hotel I was to have the meeting in and looked across the Hudson to see a plane hit the tower. Smoke and flames appeared as I struggled to comprehend what had just happened. A few minutes later, the second plane hit. After watching and praying for a while, I saw both towers collapse, one at a time. A man next to me was crying. My day of reckoning came the day after when a local radio station played the song "Imagine" by John Lennon. I was out with my daughter and I had to pull off the road because the tears were so strong that I could not see to drive. A little while after the events of September 11th I had the horrible fear of my dad getting called out because he's in the national guard. I wrote an e-mail that I sent out to all of my friends and I wanted to share it with you. I call it "A Teen's Cry" After all of the stuff that has happened recently in the U.S., war has become a word that I know and fear. My dad is in the Minnesota National Guard and when I think about war I think about him having to leave. If war does happen then he will be called out and I may never have a father again. I know that he chose to be in the Army but I fear it. One night, shortly after the attack on the trade centers, the phone rang. It was about 6 o'clock in the morning and everyone knows not to call at that time. I feared the worst. I thought it was the call that would call my dad out of the country and into war. I got up out of bed and hurried to the door as quiet as I could. I put my ear up to the door to try and hear what my mother, who had gotten up to answer it, was saying. I wanted to know if my dad had to go. Luckily it was only a wrong number. With a sigh of relief I went back into bed and wrapped myself in the covers. I was so afraid that the next call would be it. The next call would take my father away from me and I may never see him again. I wanted to go and disconnect the phone because I didn't want that person who decided his life to call. That one person who decided the lives of many soldiers. No matter how many family members that soldier had, his life was decided upon by another. I honestly hope that my dad will never recieve that call. Along with many children of the United States, I don't want to loose my family member because of something that someone in another country did. I know that many family members of the National Guard members agree. Don't get me wrong, I know that many people lost family members in the stupid act that someone did to the World Trade Centers. I feel that loss as well. All of America feels that loss because those men and women were our brother'n. They were just trying to make their lives easier by earning a weekly paycheck. I know that the attack was devistating and emotional for us but let's stand together. Let's not send more brother'n away to die. Many couldn't bare anymore losses right now. This e-mail is just the voice of a fellow American who doesn't want to see more die. We've all suffered enough. I hope you pass my story on to others so that they see how hard it is for some. I remember walking in the parking lot at work, thinking what a beautiful day I wish I was home. A co-worker came down the hall asking if anyone had a radio on, "did we hear a plane crashed into the WTC." We had several TV's at work, they were turned on. My cell phone rang and it was my husband who was working on the Jersey City waterfront, asking "doesn't Colleen work there?" Colleen is my cousin, a mother to two children, a wife, sister, aunt and a friend to everyone. I was in her wedding. She invited me to join her, her husband and kids to DisneyLand. We had a great time. I remember watching the fireworks at Epcot in the rain, her husband and I were like who cares lets go home, we're tired. But we waited to the end, Colleen wanted to see them. My husband called again upset, this time he witnessed the 2nd plane go into the South Tower, he knew instantly what was was happening. I tried to reach her sister and brothers to no avail. Called my mother, brother and sister. Finally mid-afternoon I reached one of her brothers, she called her husband's office around 9am saying she was fine and she was getting in an elevator and the call was cut out. She worked in the 2nd tower, 98th floor. It was the last time we heard from her. That day and the next several weeks were the longest days. Horrible feeling in your stomach that cannot be described. Still have it. Unfortunately, I have two other family members, 3rd cousins, whom I did not know but heard their parents names mentioned on several occassions, also lost that day. I have an emptiness that I never had before. I find the holidays to be depressing. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Colleen. But I realized you cannot take anything for granted and you must live for each moment. We will never know when something like this will happen again. When that happened i didnt really know what the World Trade Centers were. But most of all the other kids did know what they were. However, this was definitely not the type of history that I wished to see being made. The day that this horrible incident occurred, I was in school. As I entered second period, around 9:20 a.m., I walked into a classroom with a television on, which was a very strange thing. I, as well as my classmates and teacher, sat down to watch a little of what was going on. We then came to find out that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers, and the second Tower was just hit by a plane also.
