Imagine being that close to the start the beginning of a tragedy. We didn't tell her for a few weeks because she had a brain tumor removed and we wanted to make sure that we kept telling her all positive stuff. Both my husband and myself were watching the Today show and watched all the events that happened. I have become very cautious about a lot of things and I have become very patriotic. The stricter we are, is the way it should be. Unfortuately there are innocent people who will have to suffer bnecause of stricter rules. This is on ly an opinion. I know I will never forget. On the morning of 9/11/01, I was proceeding over the George Washington Bridge to meet with an OSHA inspector involving an accident investigation that I was working on as part of my job as a Safety Engineer with The Port Authority of NY/NJ. I was heading Eastbound toward the NY side, when I noticed the burning WTC and about this same time heard about the incident on the news radio. My manager called me on my Nextel, and asked me to meet him at the WTC, since we normally respond to any serious incident at our facilities and this was our building complex and also our Agency headquarters. I put on my stobe lights and siren, following closely behind the FDNY trucks that were racing down the West Side Highway to get to the scene. As I approached downtown, I could see that both towers were now hit, and there were people streaming out and emergency workers, Firemen and Police all around and heading in. I also saw numerous people jumping out from the higher floors above the impact zone where the planes had hit. This was the most awful thing to see, and I do not think I can ever forget the sight of that and everything else I witnessed on that horrible day. I was lucky, I responded to the scene and survived, having been told by a Police Inspector not to go into the buildings, since he feared that something terrible could possibly happen and he instructed me and his staff not to advance into the buildings until we had a better plan and idea of what exactly was taking place. When they began to fall shortly afterwards, I ran with him and many other police officers who had been very close to responding into the buildings right before the collapse. For several months afterwards, I was proud to serve in our Emergency Operations Center in Jersey City, assisting the Agency during the immediate rescue period and subsequent recovery phase. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. It has changed, as I believe most people's lives have also changed. I lost many friends and coworkers in the WTC, including four in my department. I am more fearful of the world now, realizing how much our country and what we stand for, freedom and democracy, is disliked by many around the globe. So I am much more cautious and suspicious, unfortunately, each day that I am working at our airports, tunnels and bridges, and ports and terminals. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The many innocent lives lost on that day, and all of the families and friends that lost their loved ones. And the sacrifices made by our emergency service workers who went in to rescue others, such as the PAPD, FDNY and NYPD. They were the heroes and will always be missed. I have aways flown an American flag outside of my home, but my feelings have grown tremendously in terms of the importance of the flag to our country and what it really means to its people. Born in Manhattan, raised in Brooklyn, and commuter to middle and high school in Manhattan. Yet on the day that the buildings came down, I was fifty miles away at college in Princeton, NJ. Although we were at school, classes had not yet started and thus, like most college kids,I was using the opportunity to sleep late. That is until my roomate burst into my room. "Min, I'm sorry to wake you, but the twin towers have come down, and they've hit buildings in Washington too." Not believing what I was hearing, I ran down the hallway to watch tv in a neighbor's room. The story my roomate had told me was true. And yet it seemed like it wasn't. When we broke away from the tv, got dressed and went to another campus building, we realized that it was a gorgeous day, the type only possible on college campuses in late summer. It was hard to believe that at home, in my city, buildings were falling down and people running for their lives. I'd tried calling my parents, but no luck, all the phones were down. Our neighbors, both of whom worked in the WTC were also out of touch, not to mention the dozens of my parent's friends who worked right near by. Later that day, watching tv in yet another friend's dorm room I just kept repeating out loud what I was seeing: "look there's Stuyvesant, where so many of my friends went to school, there's BMCC, there's the Brooklyn Bridge that I used to cross most days going to school." And the only real comment I remember from a friend: "wow, for us it's just scary, but Minda actually knows where that is and what's going on. Makes it that much more scary." When I finally got through to my parents in Brooklyn I found out just how close we really were to Manhattan. Stationary with addresses in the WTC had landed in our front yard. My sister, at school in Manhattan, was stuck there for 2 days until she could safely come home by subway. In the following days we started school, and started crying. For me, an avid New York Times reader, reaidng the stories about the attacks was fine. But the ads placed in the country by cities and other countries around the world offering NY their support were what made me cry. I returned home to NY four days after the attacks and looked around me in the subway. The amazing thing was that people were still going about their daily business. Until I was home, riding that subway, I couldn't imagine that it was possible. But it was, and slowly, over time, we're all healing. My husband, David, was on vacation that week so he was able to see the events live, as they happened. I remember my husband calling me to tell me that a plane had just hit the tower. We talked for a few minutes assuring each other that it was just an accident, after all, who would have thought that the United States was vulnerable to airplane attacks? I remember hanging up and a few minutes later David called again. I could hear the shock and horror in his voice when he told me that the second tower had just been hit. My husband kept calling me every few minutes that morning and giving me updates. It just seemed like a bad dream. When I got home, I was able to see the pictures for the first time. I could not believe what I was seeing! To see people making the terrible decision to jump rather than facing the flames, was something that I will never forget. When the rescue workers began the massive clean-up I thought, "I'll bet that they find hundreds of people trapped, but alive". I couldn't believe it when the last pockets were searched and no one was alive. It was utter devastation! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has been forever changed by the heroism and the courage of the peolple at the TC and the Pentagon. I take time eveyday to reflect on how lucky I am to still have all of my friends and family with me. My sister was visiting New York and had planned on visiiting the observation desk that morning. For several hours I didn't know whether she was alive or dead. I thank God for every day! NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the most important thing to remember is the heroes of Flight 93 qnd the people who gave their lives directing other to safety. I will never forget the flag being raisig at Ground Zero and the flag hung from the Pentagon. We need to remember that America was hurt but she will never forget. I was getting ready for school and was watching the news when "Breaking News" showed up on the television. It cut to a picture of the World Trade Center on fire. About 5-10 minutes later I saw another plane in the corner of the screen crash into the other building. On the morning of 9/11 I was eating breakfast when a radio bulletin came on that there was an explosion in the World Trade Center. I turned my TV on to get further news. I saw a huge hole in the lst building hit. Flames & smoke were coming from the hole. Announcements were being made that a small plane had hit the Trade Center. As I was watching, from the right hand side of the screen came another plane which hit the 2nd building. The flames & smoke were enormous & at that moment I felt we were under some sort of attack. I stayed glued to the TV & was horrified to watch both buildings collapse.I knew that the area was filled with emergency personnel from Police, Fire & Ambulance Units. I was concerned for my son who is a Police Sgt. ...not knowing where he was.As a retired Police Officer in NYC I have been in many catastrophic situations, but none never to equal this. I used to think of it as just to live it to your full extent, and that was about it. After the event I have become closer to God. When the first plane hit, I was at my House watching T.V. Looking as it hit the tower, my expression must have been like I had seen a ghost. My mind raced on and on, but my body was paralyzed. My fell back on my couch and just sat there thinking, wondering just what had happened. My ride honked for me, and I guess that was what woke me up. I grabbed my backpack and walked out the door. My friends were all just as quiet as I was. I figured they knew too. After I had got to my first period class at C.O.Wilson Middle School, we were all talking and watching T.V. Mrs. Bass had told us about what had ahppened earlier that morning for those that didn't kniw. The room grew quiet. We were all thinking the same thing. Then as we looked at the T.V, all of us witnessed another plane hit. My mind was thinking,"Not again..." My mind was racing faster and faster and I was just falling further and further behind. I kept saying,"This didn't happen," or,"Who did this." Tears started to flood down my cheeks as the shock took over my train of thought. September 11, 2001 will be a day I will never forget. When I think back on these tragic events, it reminds me of my younger child hood years. I used to think it couldn't get any worse, but I was sure wrong. My bond with God and fellow people alike has grown much stronger. I am thankful for what God has given me, and I have no regrets. My family or friends could have been in the tower when it happened. At the time, my uncle was in New York. Thankfully he was up by Main when it took place. The terroist scare me. It could have been me... The next time I feel sorry or am mad, my mind will drift toward the thought of September 11th. It is a day that has made me mad, but sad alike. I normally carry the weight of the world on my shoulders, but this is one event that even I had to let go. My pain, my suffering, seems only a mere scratch into what happened on that day. In my personal opinion, I believe that the firefighters and all the people that were on the plane trying to stop the terroist should be remembered. They are the true heros on this blue day. To me time seemed to stop when they were losing fire fighters left and right. Those who survived were a lucky few, for others it is a day that will ingrave a new meaning to the word remorse. As with me, it sure as hell turned my thoughts toward the world. All those innocent people dead because of the terroist. What an honor to die for your country, but yet a waste because you died fighting something you made. With all the pain and suffering that is in the world already, you would think somepeople would try to end it! I feel that my Pride was shattered when this happened. All those wives pregnant and their husbands dead, what a waste. Those people...those brave people, risking their lives for their country. That is what a hero is all about. I hadn't watched the news that morning so I didn't know about it until one of my friends told me at school. I didn't know what she was talking about and I didn't think that something really bad had happened. So when I got home from school I watched the news. I was very shocked as I watched the Trade Center fall down in a crash. I couldn't beleive that people would do something like that. But My life hasn't changed very much since I didn't know anyone who died and because I live clear across the country from where it happened. But my life has changed in some ways. On September 11 I went to school like it was any day, but during 3rd bell an assistant came in and announced that a plane had crashed into the world trade centers. I didnt think much of it because I didnt know what the buildings were. Then I went to my house were I saw that the buildings were destroted. Then the pentagon was destroyed. I was horrified at the fact we had been attacked on our own land. Now when ever I see a plane I shutter to think what the families of the people lost in the acident are feeling right now. I had gone to school as I walked into my third period class was when I heard the news. At first I was like there is no way this has really happened. What kind of sick person could fly planes into a building full of innocent people. Everyone was horrified. Then I thought to myself this is the beggining of a new war. It was Labor Day and my friends and I decided to take a ride to New York and visit The Statue of Liberty. We paid for our tickets and got on the boat. The skyline was awesome and after spending time at The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, we have agreed to come back in a couple of days to visit. I have taken tons of pictures of the skyline, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty and The World Trade Center. When I got home from New York,(I live in Connecticut)My friend called to tell me that her father passed away. I was shocked. The funeral arrangements have been made and it was taking place on Tuesday, September 11th. On September 10th, I had my pictures developed and they looked postcards! That tragic morning, I decided to work for a few hours and leave to attend the funeral. A friend of mine in Boston called to tell me that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center and I figured that it was human error. Then everyone here at my job was crying and screaming. I got really scared and tried to log on the internet and it wouldn't let me on. I left worked early and went to the funeral. I have never been so scared in my life. Being that I work at a Ivy League university, I thought they were coming here to attack Connecticut. I prayed for everyone and hope a disaster like thid doesn't happen again. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in a dentist chair when the attacks occurred. My friends and family know me as a news junkie and someone who has always been patriotic...and yet there I sat, leaning back in a chair, as my dentist worked on my teeth, oblivious to what was happening. Suddenly the receptionist burst into the room to announce that my wife had called. My wife had wanted the receptionist to interrupt my dental work to make sure I knew what was going on. I will never forget that she did that for me. At first we didn't quite understand the severity of the situation and the dentist proceeded to try and finish his work. Soon, the radio that normally plays soft music throughout the dentist office, turned over to a national wire service. After a short time, I heard my dentist's assistant say that the North Tower had collapsed. With that, I started to choke back tears and wanted to leave the office immediately. My dentist was shaken as well and he was doing his best to finish up on me so we could all get out of there. It was then that I suddenly sat up in the chair, as some of the dental tools slid off my chest. It had just hit me that I remembered my brother mentioned he might be at the Pentagon that day. My dentist let me out of the chair and I hurried for the nearest phone. I tried calling my brother's cell phone, to no avail, and then learned that all phone service was down in the D.C. area. I then left the office and went to visit my other brother and mother, who lived nearby, so that I could get in front of the TV. It took a few hours, but we eventually got word from my brother that he was safe and sound and had not been at the Pentagon after all. Nevertheless, the initial thought of what could have been was a chilling feeling I had never felt before. I eventually made it back to my own house and spent the rest of the day camped out in front of the TV with the rest of the country. It was sometime in the afternoon that I heard a tremendous boom outside my house..and then heard it a second time. It was so loud that several of my neighbors stepped outside their houses to see what was going on. We all had that initial instinctive feeling that the attacks were spreading. Thankfully, we were overreacting. Living near Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH, we came to learn that an F-16 fighter jet had been scrambled to meet Air Force One in Nebraska, to escort the President back to Washington. Apparently, the pilot prematurely broke the sound barrier and created a thunderous sonic boom. I'll never forget that noise or the feeling it gave me on that day. I flew an American flag on my house, even prior to September 11, but its significance greatly increased for me after that fateful day. It has been a comforting feeling seeing so many others flying their flags. When I travel the country it is the one thing I notice more than anything else. It was a regular day at Great valley High school I was just getting into spanish class when Mr.Tort came running in and told my teacher to turn on the tv. I had no clue what was going on when i sall New York City and seeing the world traid center on fire. I just found out that we have been attaked every one in class was scaried and diden't know what to do. I my self thought it was something out of a movie it looked so unreal you could see people running and screaming for there lives people covered in dirt and jumping out of windows of the world traid Center all day long we had the tv on. For the rest of that year people had the American flag on there car and house windows repersenting the Untied States. I will never forget that day of september 11th it will always be with me. As I was sitting in my second period class at Douglas Southall Freeman High School, I heard everyone talking about what happened. I had no idea! I asked one of my teachers and she told me. It felt like someone drew a knife through my stomach. We watched television all day during school. I couldnt believe my eyes or my ears. This was something so absurd and unimaginable that I couldnt understand how another human being could do that. All day I was daydreaming of those who had lost their lives and their families. When I got home if finally caught up to me. I sat on my bed watching the news. Tears were going down my eyes. I was in hysteria. Even though I didnt have family or friends that were hurt, my heart still ached for those who did have someone. After a while I realized that we shouldnt remember their death but their precious life and know that they were somebodys parent, husband/wife, boss, and most of all friend. This day will never be forgotten. It will be a remembrance for anyone who has seen or heard about it. It changed their lives and so did mine. I was born in Yugoslavia and moved to the United States when I was 11 years old. Now I am 18 and finally settled in a place I can call home. I spent more of my time here growing up, then anywhere else in the world. If someone asked me where my home is, Id say here in the U.S. The tragedy that took place on September 11th made me grow even more and realize that we are all a family who loves and supports each other in the good times and the bad. Many people died & innocent lives were lost, but we all pulled through it and became a stronger nation. It didnt matter whether it was on their house, cars, clothes, or anything else for that matter. I still carry a flag on my car to let everyone know that I do remember what happened and that I will never forget it. I gasped for words as I struggled for understanding when the news hit me like a bolt of lightning, while sitting in Mrs. Kennedys second period Spanish class. She said, Its an attack, were under attack by someone. Deep inside, part of me believed her and part of me hoped she was mistaken. I felt a strange confusion that was as unsuspected as the attacks. I felt for the ones who had to experience the attack within the towers, and I knelt for the families of those martyrs of freedom. The threat was intended to blow a hole in the side of the United States two main ships, the economy and the military. However, the terrorists got more than they bargained for. Instead, they challenged the very way of life of every American citizen and in so doing brought the wrath of the world onto their shoulders. We are a country of many cultures, a mixing pot, and when one terrorist sect tries to attack a mixing pot, it usually turns over and scorches every last perpetrator. The threat, to me, was aimed at more than two pillars of American society. It was aimed to embarrass and exploit the pride of every American citizen. After the attack, pride flooded the streets like never before. All over our great land, flags went up everywhere, and people who had never prayed before began to look to the heavens for guidance. It became obvious at that point that to Americans, pride was more of an emotion than an action. The unity of our citizens showed our leaders that we wanted and needed closure and it was up to them to get it. As we discovered who tried to embarrass America, it became obvious to me that this was about jealousy. We made the Al Quaida jealous of our confidence in our leaders and the attitude of our free peoples. As we continued to thrive after their first thwarted attempts, it became clear they would need something a bit more drastic. As they planned the attack, Im sure they never imagined the reactions of the people to be postive. Instead of being scared and reactive, the people on that shadowed day were brave and proactive. They took over one plane and possibly saved the White House. I was in a state of awe at the ignorance of the geniuses that masterminded this attack. Through any study at all, these men would have known that America is not based on money or power, it is based on spirit and pride. Money and power do play a role on occasion, but our cornerstone is the strength and the hope of a better future for the people of this country. Our position in this world was first built on the intangible things, not the materialistic. It is for this reason that we are so rich and powerful. From the people who held prayer services in Los Angeles, to the fire fighters who climbed the stairs while others were hurdling down them. I knew that this country had something that the terrorists obviously lacked, a heart. A heart that beat in adversity, and ached for the oppressed. On September 11, more than envy and rage was shown by the terrorists, pride and courage was shown by Americans. This must never be forgot. The t.v. was one and our teachers told us to come in and sit down to watch the news. At first, it wasn't such a big deal, but as we watched more, we started to see that a national crisis had occured in New York. At the end of my 2nd period class, a friend of mine told me that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. Everyone thought that it was just an accident, but, eventually, news arrived of the second crash. From then on, in almost every class students were watching the news or talking about what had happened. This was scary for me, because that morning my parents were scheduled for a flight to Mexico at 9:20 AM out of JFK airport. Luckily, my parents were late for that flight, and they were rescheduled for a later flight. No plane going to Mexico was captured, so my parents safety was not in danger, but if they had got on the flight, they would have ended up landing in Atlanta and would have been stuck there for a few days. They ended up staying at a hotel somewhere in New York City, and they couldnt come back until the George Washington Bridge was reopened. I dont know many people who lost someone in the attack, but one of my teachers did. Fortunately, my friends mother made it out of the World Trade Center after the first plane hit. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was working on the 20th floor of 3 World Financial Center. Got to work at 8:30 am, as usual. Worked in the Southeast corner, the one nearest to 1 World Trade Center. When the first plane hit 1 WTC, our building shook as if in an earthquake. After the orange fire ball, debris started falling down onto West Street. Our building security office came on the intercom to tell us we were not involved, we were not evacuating. This was unreal. A large section of 1 World Trade peeled off and fell onto West St. We had seen the large numbers of firemen, they arrived in what seemed like seconds, and we knew the debris was falling on them. Then the second plane hit. Again our building shook and again the security office said we were not evacuating. I ran to my desk to put on my sneakers. I remember saying I was not waiting around for the 3rd plane. Then they finally announced we should leave and we could take the elevators! I got in the elevator, I was the only one in it all the way down. We were told to head North (uptown). I was afraid the buildings were going to explode. As I walked uptown, people, including mothers pushing baby carriages, were heading for the burning buildings. Then someone shouted, and people started running. I ran to Canal Street, hoping to get over the Brooklyn Bridge, but it had been shut down. I ended up spending 6 hours in Manhattan until the trains started running again. It turns out the bridge had reopened, but anyone you asked, like police, had no information. The next day, pictures appeared showing my office building. The corner where I had worked had been sheared away by girders falling on it. There were girders going into the windows on many floors like spears. The building security almost waited until it was too late, to evacuate us. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I get nervous going over bridges or through tunnels. I keep a pair of sneakers under my desk and a flashlight and face mask in my desk. I try to walk down the stairs as often as possible to build up my leg muscles. I did not fly for one year. Hearing planes overhead is unnerving. I do not like working on an island and plan to retire someplace in the country instead of the city. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Despite the many deaths, office buildings remain very unsafe and the death of thousands may go unrewarded in changing the building codes because of real estate greed. Much has been said about stairways and how the building codes figures out how many are needed to evacuate people. This formula belongs in the Stone Age. If a stairway is damaged or filled with smoke or fire, it is useless. Therefore the formula for devising the number of stairways is insane. It should also be against the law to use sheetrock to encase a stairway, it shatters. There is also only 1 water pipe to supply the sprinkler system. If that 1 pipe is damaged, you might as well not have any sprinklers. Many people were told to go back to their desks in the World Trade Center. I feel buildings should be evacuated on the side of safety instead of waiting for the last minute. You can always go back inside, but you cannot always get out. The newspapers printed the flag so since I live in an apartment, I pasted the flags in all my windows. Most people do not know flag ediquette. THe super of my apartment house put a flag on the lobby wall, and put a lit Christmas sign in front of it, lying directly on the flag. I told him to put the sign on another wall and he got mad at me. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. well on the morning of september 11th i woke up and all i could hear was the news. And i went down the stairs trying to figure out why the tv was so loud so early in the morning. well my mother came up to me and said that she thought it was all a big hoax when she woke up. she said she thought she was watching a joke. well i started watching the tv for a little bit to see what was going on when i sat down is when the second plane hit the second tower. i was in shock i could not believe what i saw. I was so scared after that i thought the nation was under attack. well after seeing this i had to go get ready for school when i arrived i really didnt talk to anyone because i was just in shock. when i got into my 3rd period class room (biology) at FVHS, with mr. fevergeon. we watched the progresion of this disaster. Once i saw the people jumping out of the building that was the end for me i couldnt hold it in any longer i just started to cry because this is just such a tragic sight to see so many people jumping to their death rather than trying to save themselves or others. i still till this day cannot look at even newspaper clippings of the people jumping because to me that was the most memorable part of that day. My view on life has changed. i look at things as though they were the most precious thing becase we only have one life to live and to die like that in so much fear makes me think that maybe some things arent as miniscule as i think. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? i think we should remember that although they were foreigners that did that, we musnt exclude every foreigner because they arent all the same. my stepdad is syrian and he has family in syria but he is a good man and would never do anything to hurt anyone. they arent all the same.
