NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My wife and I were on our way to Columbus, Ohio to babysit with our grandson. As we were sitting at a bank, I heard on the radio that a plane had crashed into the WTC. As we were driving we thought it was simply an accident. In a few minutes, news of the second plane hitting the second tower again left us stunned. A terrorist attack was not in my mind at that time. It wasn't until we heard that the third plane had crashed into the Pentagon that I thought "Oh my God." The only thought that came to my mind was to pray. When we got to Columbus, we sat and watched the TV the rest of the afternoon. I remember going to a nearby gas station because there was a fear that there would be an oil embargo. I rushed to the sation to see nearly 30 cars in line. Next day, I made up a sign on a piece of 4 x 8 plywood and wrote the words "God Bless America" on it. After I placed it out near the road, I sat down and cried. A couple of days later a local newspaper reporter stopped to ask about my sign and if he could take pictures of it. I told him, this was not for publicity, but just my own personal way of expessing myself. When he asked if I was angry I told him "not yet. Right now, I'm just sad." It's been nearly a year and I think most of my anger has channeled itself into sadness. It's just so sad that we as human beings resort to this kind of things to one another. I'm more aware of the fact that we might someday be seeing the kinds terrorist bombings in Israel here in the US. I think once that happens, my feelings will change. I'm still in a sad mode at this point, but I know deep down that that feeling will turn to anger and vengence. Especially if someone I know is hurt. If that happens, the anger will become rage and I pray God that never happens. I'm not in favor of a knee jeerk reaction. I truly believe we need to get to the "Root cause" for all this hatred toward us and find ways to address it. Not everyone in the world wants to be like us and we should realize that. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I'll never forget watching fathers and mothers, wives and husbands searching for their sons and daughters that day. One man in particular will remain in my mind forever. He was just an ordinary man, a man who you could tell was a kind man. He had tears streaming down his face and fighting back his emotions while holding a picture of his missing son. I have a son about his sons age and I broke down crying. The tragedy of Sept. 11 was that it didn't just happen to the people of NYC, it touched all of us because the people we watched on tv that day could have been us and we all know that. I'm a veteran and proud of my flag. I think we needed to send the message to the rest of the world that the United States of America had suffred a great hurt but that we will recover. We are not quitters. This isn't simply a matter of patriotism, it's a matter of the human spirit. I think everyone in the world hurt that day, because we're all human beings. Once we lose that feeling for one another, we've lost it as a species. My wife and I went to NYC 3 weeks after the tragedy to take some socks to some fire stations. I don't know what compelled me to decide to do this just that this was such a tragedy we felt we needed to do something even if it was just to deliver socks. It wasn't a morbid curiosity to see the site, rather it was to experience the history and the feelings of it. I felt I was in the center of a great tragedy and needed to experience what others were feeling. I'm glad we went. And seeing the pictures outside the firestations of the young men who died helped bring a sense of closure for me. It was so so sad but I needed to link to those men in some metaphysical sense to let them know that even us folks out in Ohio were hurt and that we would not forget them. I do not remember their names, but I will always remember their pictures and thinking that I had in some way connected with them and in my own way, carried a little part of their lives back with me. I woke up on September 11th and, like I usually do, I went through my daily routine to get ready for school. After I had dressed, I noticed that both my parents were awake and had shocked expressions on their faces while watching TV. When I found out what had happened, a whirl of confusion flooded my mind. I couldn't understand how anyone could be cold-hearted enough to take the lives of hundreds or thousands of innocent people. When I finally made it to school after the silent car-ride there, I was surrounded by solemn faces and whispers of rumors about what had just occured. Hello, my name is Krista Fryman, I am 18 years old, and I live in Northern Kentucky. I may have not been there, and I may not know anyone who was. Still, everyone who was alive at the time now has a story to tell. It was my senior year of high school. I was in math class when a boy named Tyler Wickman walked into the class and said, "The state building has been bombed" I didn't understand what he was trying to tell us, but I knew something was wrong. Eventually the guidance counselor came over the announcements, "We are safe...for now, please...stay calm I became more alarmed, and I didn't even know what was going on. When lunch time came around I drove to the restaurant where I was supposed to meet my Mom. There was a TV in the room and that's where I first learned about what had happened. Never have I seen a room of people so quiet, and I've never seen a room of people so quiet since. It was very eerie, very unreal. My life has been changed since September 11th. I just don't feel like the same person anymore. When I think of that day I become numb. I'm also more proud of my country. At Walt Disney World, in Florida, we work amid the fantasy of cartoon and movies, in images of how the world should be or could be. I was working at Epcot that morning, and the day was just as perfect as it was in New York. One of my co-workers was at home and had seen the initial coverage of the first plane's attack on WTC Tower 1. She called me at work and said it was a small plane. I left the shop and went into the break area to see for myself. United 175 came on the screen and flew into Tower 2. I was in that room watching until the South Tower fell. The TV commentator couldn't identify what was happening. It was pretty obvious to me that the building had come down. That's where the smoke cloud originated. I left in shock to return to the shop and inform my fellow Cast Members what was happening. Now, as a rule, the Cast cannot tell the guests about current events unless they first ask us. Shortly after 11 am, Michael Eisner's voice interrupted the daily activity in Disney World's Parks, as well as in Disneyland. He announced that a national tragedy had occurred in Washington and New York. In Disney's concern for guest safety, we would be closing all the parks by 12 noon, eastern time. As the guests filed out, rather calmly I thought, they were of course curious about what had happened. Our location accepts the packages guest purchase inside Epcot. So when one couple asked me about the events, I told them about the commercial airliners that had struck both WTC towers and the Pentagon. The woman asked, with some trepidation, if there were passengers on the aircraft. With my simple, "Yes", it struck both of us that the tragedies and deaths in NYC and at the Pentagon were our own as well. The attacks were against the American people as a whole. I was one of the last people to leave Epcot's front entrance that day. I took a photo of the U.S. flag still flying high from the flagpole without a soul in the Park at mid-day. It was a moment in time. I knew we would survive. The next morning I took that same photo with the flag at half-staff. We opened the Park on time! I taped everything I could of the news shows and the constant marathon of coverage for the first couple of weeks. In my work I use a box cutter. Every time I used it to open boxes, I thought of what similar tools had been used for on those four flights. When the airlines started flying again, I said a small prayer for everyone on board each craft that overflew me. I gained a new understanding of what our service groups do for us all and was ashamed that I had never thought about their sacrifices and bravery before. I made a conscious effort to thank every firefighter, police officer, EMS worker, and military serviceman I saw. I was so taken by that objective that I proposed a new pin for our collection based upon the print of Charles Boyer's "Mickey Thanks a Fireman". As more firefighters came to the parks and were looking for some material example of thanks for their service, I pressed our merchandising people for that pin. We got the first shipment of them on September 1st, 2002 and sold out of them in two weeks. I have bought many of them myself to give away to those same service folk I recognized. Disney recognized all our "heroes" in many and varied ways for that first year. It was a gratifying experience for all. The last two of those pins that I gave out went to the chief, and his deputy, of the Shanksville fire department, the first responders to the field where Flight 93 fell. I visited that field on 17 October, 2003. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I never want to forget the tragedy and suffering that went on that day. To do so, I believe, cheapens the memory of all those who died for just getting on a plane or going to work. I also never want to forget how this country gave up partisanship and pulled together for the common good. I wish the Congress today was as concerned about the individual American as they were when they all gathered to sing "God Bless America" on the Capitol steps. In this season of Presidential politics, I would like the memory of September 11th to be more than a political punchline. It seems that we in America are doomed to repeat our history because we so easily forget its teachings. And the last thing is that all this fighting about who was responsible for letting this attack happen is pointless. No one... I repeat, no one, could have forseen the actual event as it happened. In this instance, we joined the whole country in identifying who we are for the world to see. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Hello my name is Eric Hanson. I am a 7th grade geography teacher in Eden Prairie, MN. On the morning of September 11, 2001. I was in my room at school working on my computer and listening to the radio. All of a sudden the people on the radio talked about a plane hitting one of the twin towers. I ran down to our school's media center to see if I could find a TV. On the way down there I ran into a few colleagues and I told them about what I just heard. We ran down to the media center and turned on the TV. Just as we turned on the TV, we saw the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower. We sat there in awe for several minutes. I then went back to my room to try to get ready for the students. It was a difficult day, because we were told not to talk about it too much in school to get the kids upset, but it was hard since many of them had heard about it already. I believe it was around the 3rd period that a colleague had stopped by and said that one of the towers had crumbled and that they were expecting the 2nd one to do the same. Our staff lounge was never so quiet that day and those that followed. We had a TV hooked up in there with CNN tuned in for the remainder of the week. Although my life wasn't directly affected by the events of September 11, I believe my life has changed in some respects. How couldn't it? I found myself asking more questions about the parties involved. Osama Bin what? I found myself absored in trying to understand why this happened. There were students in my class who's parents traveled a great deal. I even had a mother of a student of mine who was a flight attendant, and she shared with us the emotional goodbye she had with her son, for her first trip after the attacks. I have flown twice since then, and I have definitely been more cautious of my surroundings. On my first trip, I was asked to be searched going thru the gates as well as before boarding the plane. Before September 11th, I was a little annoyed if I didn't pass the metal detectors. Now, I'd be happy if everyone were checked before boarding the plane. It's a difficult task as a 7th grade teacher to discuss this issue in class even one year later. I believe it's something we should never forget, but we should never relive it each year either. The 7th grade students I see each day, are still pretty young. They are very impressionable, and can still get pretty upset fairly easily about this topic. So as much as I feel it a duty to address the topic, I walk on egg shells in how I do it. I woke up, got myself ready, and took the bus in to school. Three periods into the day I had biology. I was doing my usual classroom work when the phone rang in my classroom. My substitute teacher picked it up as we listened to her curiously. She immediatley placed a quick phone call to her daughter, who was in New York, only to find out that she was okay. It wa then that she turned on the TV to CNN. I stared in disbeleif at the screen as a message scrolled on the bottom stating that the world trade center have been hit. I couldn't handle what I wasseeing. One of the twin towers was flaming and the downtown area of New York City was in total chaos. People were jumping out of windows, running for their lives and barely escaping the falling debris tumbling down on top of them. Even the news reporter was running for her life. Before I could take in the shock of the first hit, another plane flew itself right into the second tower. At first I thought it was a replay of the first tower being hit but I was wrong. I sat there in complete denial wondering how this could happen. The entire day we all watched in horror as we saw the Pentagon attacked, the towers collapsing, and another plane crashing in western PA. So many lives were lost; innocent lives. I felt grief to all the victims, but most of all I felt fear. Fear for myself, my family and my friends, and my country. I just couldn't beleive that this had actually happened. It was too unreal, too much like a movie or a nightmare. I couldn't understand why someone out there woould want to do this to America. I find my self very lucky not to have known anyone hurt or killed by the attacks. I can imagine it being very difficult for them. I would be lost, depressed and angry. I think that my life has changed mostly in my values. I have learned to appreciate my family more than ever because now I know that our lives could be changed in an instant and you need to live life to the fullest while you can. The rescue workers risked their lives in order to save others from the collapsing tower. I think that they deserve remembrance and should be awarded for what they accomplished on September 11th. My radio alarm went off at 6:08 AM (PST) with the voice of the morning announcer saying "an airplace has crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City". Although I immediately concluded it must be a small private airplane, something about it was highly troubling in the back of my mind. I turned on the TV and within minutes I watched the second airplane crash into the second tower. There was no longer any doubt -- this was the work of brilliantly evil terrorists. They had taken our own people, our own technology, our own innovations and our own cities, and in a devilishly twisted yet incredibly well executed way had turned it all against us. After a few minutes of numbing shock, I realized I had to call the employees of my company and tell them to stay at home and away from our downtown San Francisco office. This was not going to be just another day in the office. Indeed not. This day would be spent glued to the news, shaking our heads and slowly feeling our shock turn to anger and sadness. As a senior at Wright State University in the Education program, I was in my final quarter of my college experience. I was student teaching at a junior high school and was in the middle of the "bump and grind" of the normal Tuesday morning routine. Then, suddenly, my proverbial rug was pulled out from under me. A colleague abruptly opened my door and informed me of the bad news. I was immediately floored... in America? The fear and disbelief that I was feeling was overwhelming and I began to cry. As the river of tears began to flow down my cheeks, I witnessed President George W. Bush begin to curb my anxiety. I was enraged that this tragedy could and had taken place on my home soil. Bush made the promise that he would find these terrible people who had carried out these horrific events and punish them appropriately... I was encompassed my the overwhelming feeling of faith and belief that I had in this phenomenal country that I call home. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? I believe that we, as a society, should remember all of those who lost their lives on that terrible day and those who work on a daily basis to protect our safety and freedom! I believe that I will continue to do so until the day that I die. For me, the flag has a tremendous amount of meaning. It stands for all of those who have died throughout history to protect this wonderful democracy that we live in on a daily basis. Not only this, it also represents all of those people who have died for simply being an American. I cannot express how much this symbol has changed my outlook on life. When I see this amazing creation, I now think about the image of the firemen lifting the flag that once stood on the roof of the World Trade Center... throughout all of that disaster, the red, white, and blue survive and will continue to fly no matter what! I was having lunch (UK time) with colleagues when one of them received a call from his wife, who had seen the news on the BBC. We couldn't really converse after that, and, I couldn't work at all, so I escaped and walked up into town. Passing an electrical shop, and hearing some voices, I walked in. The graphics were on all the screens in the shop, live, and terrible. I couldn't move away and was transfixed. What struck me more than anything, was that I was standing next to an elderly American couple, obviously friendly visitors, and they just could not comprehend the dreadfull scenes we were all watching on the banks of televisions in front of us. There were several others watching with us, all silent. The American Lady was not sure where all these scenes came from at all. I tried to stay with them and all I could say to them, apart from trying to make them feel secure and having such deep sympathy for them and their homeland, was, 'You'll be OK. Take care, you'll be safe', which was pretty bland and pathetic, but I dearly wanted to let them know how I felt for them, while they watched their country being raped. I had to call my Wife,(her sister lives and works in Richmond VA) and she picked up the message when she arrived home. This was the deepest despair for humanity that I have ever felt. The thought of the passengers in the planes having half an hour facing death. Also, how could the people on the floors above the plane strike, contain their fear. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I view September 11th as the day that I became an adult. At the time I was a 23 year old high school teacher in Boston. While my students quietly complained and talked during homeroom period, the headmaster's voice boomed over the intercom. The announcement silenced the school. My stomach dropped. A good friend from college worked at the pentagon and I had several close friends in the military. My first thought was, "there is no way I walked away from this without loosing anyone." However, being the leader of the classroom, I had little time to think of myself. My students were frightened because there was still one plane in the air and they were very concious of the fact that Boston could be a target. Furthermore, several of my students had parents on flights out of Logan that day. Honestly, I don't remember much else about those 48 hours except for the overwhelming silence. A year after 9/11 I met a very close friend, Danielle, in graduate school. After several months of friendship, I learned that she had been working blocks from the WTC. She explained running from the buildings in silent tears. Over the course of the year I saw her fear when cars were slightly to loud...or the bus ride lasted a bit longer than normal. Her reserve and strength is remarkable. The terror of 9/11 hit me one day when I realized how different my life would be if I had never met her. I was at school and we went to first period between the pasing time of first and second I had heard people saying that the world trade towers had been hit. I didn't know at that point how much tragedy had occured. To tell you the truth all I knew about them is that they stood in New York, and they were 107 stories tall. I couldn't have told you what they were for even if you gave me a hint. I was sort of blind to the stockmarkets and stuff realted tot that. I wasn't able to realize what was going pon until third period when our teacher Mrs. Ernst turned on the tv and told us to sit in our seats and see what was going on in our country. When we got done watching the replays of the buildings getting hit. She stopped muted it and asked if we had had any questions. THe first and last question to be brought up was "Are we at war?", "What are we going to do?" and " Why did they do it?". After school that day I wnet haome and walked aways to a corner garden sotre and sat on the steps with my friends. We were talking about our fears and terrors and wondering what life would be like after this. They left and I just lay there looking towards the sky and praying and asking god." NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was just any ordinary day. I woke up, took a shower and got ready for school. I went downstairs and saw my mom just like I would every other weekday. I asked her, "So, when are you leaving to work?" She would always reply with a, "Right after you and Stella leave." I don't know why I would ask her the same question everyday knowing what the answer was already. It was around 8 and my sister and I said goodbye to my mom as we gradually walked on our way to school. It takes my mom at the most 30 minutes to get to work if there is traffic. She always would take the PATH train in Hoboken and in a few stops would be her office, the famous Twin Towers. She worked at Tower 1. I would go there occasionally, all the way to the 89th floor to help her out with work but now that school started I was too busy to. Let's see, first period. Then we all go to homeroom. I sat down and I remember looking around and thinking, "Wow I really like this homeroom." I used to hate it but in that one second I realized how many great people we had in our homeroom. Then less than a minute later our homeroom teacher had an announcement to make. He said pretty casually, "Did you hear about the plane hitting the World Trade Center (tower 1) just now?" I must have been staring at the same spot for 2 minutes nonstop just horrified. I couldn't say anything I just cried. I cried for all of second period and people would come up to me and I couldn't even speak. I never felt that much pain inside of me. I can't really describe, but it's something like a really painful knot inside your heart and you body starts to shake and lose control. My mind kept playing little games on me. A part of me was already making future plans of what I will do without my mom. I haven't seen my dad since I was 3 so I knew my sister and I would have the hardest time. But another part of me knew that God wouldn't take her away from me. Especially like this. I went to the nurse and I seriously must have cried a whole river. I needed so many napkins, toilet paper, anything I can get my hands on. I finally called my mom's cell phone and she picked up! That was the best feeling. My cheeks hurt because I couldn't stop smiling. Luckily she had an appointment Harlem so she didn't go to work as early as she does most of the time. So I thank God that she is OK and I wish for the best for the victims' families of that day because I got a glimpse of how you felt on that day and no one will ever understand that unless they go through it the way I have or the way someone who really did lose someone has. So that was my experience of 9/11. It was the longest day of my life and I will never forget that day as long as I live. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. After 9/11 my whole viewpoint on life has changed. I now know that life can really end tomorrow. Most of us have to stop living the fairy tale lives that we have been living for the past 10 years and realize that bad things happen. People we love die. We die. I think that is something everybody tends to forget. Deep inside we act and think as if we will never die and everything will always be the same. I learned so much about myself and the importance of life from that day. I just wish that it happened a different way somehow. But, I believe whatever happens you can bring good out of it somehow and we have done the best we can with this situation so I am very proud of our country. After a long recovery and many many months of professional help I am now able to talk about some of the events of this Horrific day that not only change the World but changed my life forever. I was at a meeting with my business partners and eighteen staff and four clients high in the North Tower . Enjoying the clearness of the early morning out over Manhattan. I, along with my assistant Anna left just prior to the plane slamming into our building. There were eight people who were trapped in the Elevator nearest to impact. We knew that it was a bomb or something very serious had just happened that stopped our elevator as we could hear the extremely loud noises and smell smoke and fuel as all our lights went out and our elevators stopped. Some of the men climbed up on to the roof through the manhole to see how we could escape. Five people around us died as huge explosions blow metal like paper and fire raged. Three of us managed to escape through a huge hole that was blown in the elevator wall and via a ladder on inside of the elevator shaft. We climbed down with our injuries and through a small opening into a landing. Eventually we reached the main stairwell. People were injured and very afraid. There were people pushing and trying to get out. No order was present as they panicked and tried to save themselves. I saw things on this day that shall stay in my mind and heart forever. By the Mercy and help of God we escaped only seconds before the building fell. Prior to September 11th I had been a successful business woman and after my life is dramaticall changed. I know God was there on that day for me and others. Miracles did happen . God was there for so many along with the brave firemen, medics, civilians and did save my life and many others. I had been in Los Angeles and just returned on the 9th to hand over my position to my partner who had also just arrived from Canada to take my place. I had been very ill during the previous year with Leukemia and had taken some time off to have a bone marrow transplant which was scheduled for the 26th September. I was at a meeting with my business partners, eighteen staff and four clients high in the North Tower at the 101 level. We were enjoying the clearness of the early morning views after having had a breakfast at Window on the World. I, along with my assistant Anna left the meeting to attend another meeting just prior to AAFlight 11 slammed into our building. I had seen the plane and commented that it looked like it was heading our way but was reassured that it was not and would divert over the river. There were eight people who were trapped in the Elevator nearest to impact including myself. We knew that it was a bomb or something very serious had just happened. We could hear the extremely loud noises, smell smoke and fuel as all our lights went out and our elevators stopped. I had managed to stop the flow of blood with his neck tie and belt. I had placed his severed hand into my shoulder bag. How any one of the three of us were able to climb down is A MIRACLE. As I was driving, I heard on the radio that another had crashed. I remember the awful feeling of pins and needles in my stomach because I realized our country would be going to war. When I got to work, I heard about Pentagon attack. I watched the news on and off and listen via radio. I couldn't help but cry when I watched the first tower collapse. There was nothing special, it was a typical Tuesday. When I got to school and tried to last through two periods of Chemistry, cause it was an "A" day. When I went to English, this kid Carl kept getting up, in tears, he was being consouled by all the teachers, and no one knew why. Then we heard, we learned that at 8:48 am, while I was learning about the chemical composition of something, America was under attack. When I went to Choraliers, that's 4th and 5th periods, The Vredenburgs walked in crying, the told us, that the world trade centers twin towers were gone...gone. And that the Pentagon was hit too. We sat in disbelief, how could two of the largest buildings in the state, just, be gone. When we went to lunch a few of my friends and i went to the history wing, we watched for the first time, the towers falling, shattering like glass on a cold day. It was bone-chilling experience. Then we went to spanish, the teacher read an announcement trying to hold back what everyone that day was feeling, a feeling of insecurity. For the rest of the day, we watched over and over the towers coming down, the Pentagon in flame, it seemed for many weeks that the world was coming apart at the seams. When I got home I watched again, and again, the towers coming down, I felt like MSNBC was the only station that worked, it was a feeling of wanting to know any new information if it was there. It was wanting to know, why. What did we do, what did we say, that would make a nation hate us, the I realized its not a nation, its a rebel group of people, and its not just us they hate, the don't like anyone. I walked into class to see everyone sitting silently and watching the television. I didn't know what was happening until I looked at the tv and saw the first tower being struck. As we watched the events unfold throughout the day, nobody knew what to say. I know some people were crying, some were angry, and some were just shocked. When the news reached our school, teachers were running through the hallways, making sure everyone was turning their televisions on and watching this event that was sure to become a part of American history. After it happened, the entire country stepped up and there was an incredible sense of patriotism. It caused our country to become more aware and cautious about our defense system. I think that the most important thing that should be remembered about September 11th is the people who lost their lives.The people who became victims to this tragedy as well as the heroes who gave their lives should be remembered and honored. I think i was in third period by the time that the teachers were talking about it to the classes. I think the people I felt the worst for was the people on the planes that got highjacked. I don't know what I would have done sitting on that plane knowing that I was going to die and that i was going to die by crashing into a building in the united states that was ment to kill americans that had families and were completely innocent for the gain of another country. I had just heard the news from a friend that was late that day for school. Now that it is a year later, I remember it quite well. I remeber we all thought that the Pentagon was the biggest deal, "Is'nt that were all our secrets are," I asked. We were way more worried about the Pentagon than the Trade Center. See I had no clue of what that was, so my asumption was, it must be harmless and small. But, when I got home I saw what the big deal was. I saw the large pile of rubble, known as the world trade center. Then I saw how all the firemen/policemen were doing, and that gave me a whole new respect for what they do. I WILL NEVER FORGET.
