NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. The morning of September 11th, I was sleeping in my living room of my apartment. My phone rang and it was my mom. She said "Rachel, turn on your tv, we are being attacked!" I was half asleep and told my mom " My door is locked no one is in my house!" Thinking she was talking about me, My phone rang again not 5 minutes later, "Damnit Rachel Turn on your tv now!" IT was my mom again. I finally got up and turned on my tv. I layed there listening to it and heard the reporter say "AA plane has been hi-jacked and was crashed into the WTC #1...I thought "What the hell is going on?" I saw the plane being replayed and started crying. Then they showed the second plane, I cried even harder. I just sat there, not knowing what to think. Is this real? Who is behind all of this? I couldn't believe it! Then a thought popped in my head "My grandma is back there!" I called my mom back and asked her if she had heard from my grandma, "no, I'm waiting" is all she said. I sat in my apartment all day long just watching the news.... I can't believe it - our country just got attacked! Well Sept.12th came and me and my mom went to the downtown mall to pick up some things we had on hold and from my moms house to the mall we did not see more than 2 cars the whole way down there. Thats a 12 mile distance between places. Anyway, My grandma called on the 12th, saying she was ok. She couldn't believe the horrific sounds she heard that day. She will never forget! My sympathies go to the families who lost loved ones that day, and to those who are recovering whether it be phsyically or emotionally, I couldn't belive what on saw on that day, I could only imagine what it would be like being there in person, scary..... I live each day like it is the last and I make sure I tell everyone in my life I love them everyday! It could be your last! This world has such wonderful people in it , its too bad that there are some that have to try and ruin it! And have ruined it for some, such as the families that will never see their mom, dad, sister, brother, what have you again! I think everyone will always remember the courageous police dept, fire dept, hospitals, paramedics, and random people trying to save their own lives as well as help others...It was a very sad, emotional, tragic day, but it was also a day where NO ONE was selfish except those that took the lives on those planes, and in the WTC. You know here in Spokane, Washington, the teenagers joke that are cops and other authorities are jerks and such, but if that had happened here in Spokane, There little minds would have changed! My principal told us that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been bombed by terrorists. Then I saw everything on T.V. that night. As I woke up and got ready to go to work I rceived a phone call from my dad telling me frantically to turn on the television. I ran to turn the TV on when I felt my heart stop. I could not believe what I was seeing. I sat on my bed as the second airplane hit the second tower. I was in a panic because I felt as though the towers were going to collapse. I screamed to the TV, as if though they could hear me, for everyone to get out of the building, but sadly not everyone made it out with their lives. I was on the pc playing a gamee, when my mom suddenly ran in my room and told me to come and look. I walked over to the tv, and thought that what I saw was a movie, the only thing is is that a movie usually doesn't have "Breaking News" under it. I stood there for a while like I was stunned. I didn't say anything. Suddenly I saw the second plane crash into the WTC. We immediately called my dad who was in Jakarta, a two hour plain flight away from me. I sat down on the sofa for however long it took until the first and then the second plane crashed down. It was just terrible... I've never been in the Usa yet, but it has been my dream since I'm ten years old. On 911, I was 12 years old and at first I didn't get to know about what had happened, because I was at school. It was already afternoon, wenn I arrived home and herade what had happened. My mom had been working, so I sat down infront of our TV and switched it on. At first I couldn't believe it, I guess because it seemed so unreal I thought that might not be true. I changed the channels... but each of them were showing the same. Then I knew that it wasn't a bad dream. This was real. I dunno how long I sat there and watched it, but when my mother came home with a friend of her, she already knew about it, because she had listened to the radio. It was pretty bad and it took me a while to sleep in that night. I thought about all the people who might be death or hurt and was shocked that something like that had have happened. Next day at school, we wrote cards to other kids who lived near NY. We didn't speak much English, but we tried our best. when our teacher told us to be silent for minute we did it. My friend Amy and I were running together. We decided to sprint the last corner of the track and both recieved times around 9 minutes. After we finished the mile, a few of us decided to go back into the school to get a drink of water. I was walking around our school's foyer and my friend Amanda came down the stairs. "Hey did you guys hear what happened??" she asked us "A plane just flew into the World Trade Center!" We were shocked but it didn't really hit us. Then my principal ran down the stairs talking into his walkie talkie yelling, "they just got the Pentagon!" My friends and I still didn't believe it. We didn't think it was serious until the next period, when a kid in our math class got called down to the office because his father worked in the WTC. We spent that whole block period looking up info on the internet and watching the tvs in the hallways. I was finally starting to understand what was happening. It was during my last period class that I heard the most shocking news of all. My old gym teacher's husband was on one of the planes, and he had left her a message on her answering machine before crashing. She had also been the cross country coach the year before, and one of the other coaches pulled every team member out of class to tell them in private. By the end of the day everyone on the team was bawling. After school I went to field hockey practice. Everyone was upset, but playing really provided a good outlet so that we could take our minds off things. We did, however, think of a new play, and we named it "911". That night I watched the news and after seeing the image over and over again, I was crying. It was all just too much to handle. I heard about the first of the towers being hit over the radio on the bus on my way to school. At first I thought it was someone's idea of a joke and chose not to believe it. When I got to school, everyone was in denial of the occurrence but were tuning in to their radios. After getting into class we discussed it and watched the news to discover that something tragic really did occur and that one of the Twin Towers was hit. I started to follow the news until it got to be overbearing. I think the media covered that story much more then needed and they showed the seen of people dying way too often. I still act, feel, and think the same about myself and this country. There was always that chance out there and too many people assumed that it never would. As a Paramedic and hospital employee in Cleveland, OH.- I had a premonition- at approximately 0800, I stood up from my desk, reached for my purse and announced to my co-worker that I was going to another building in the hospital complex. She asked my "why the purse?" and I explained that I only did this if there was a chance that something would happen and I wouldn't be able to get back to my desk, that this way, if I could get to my car, I'd have keys, ID & money. Now, I hadn't done this anytime in the previous eight months! I was walking down the hall when I was paged about the 1st crash from an acquaintance in our helicopter/medical flight office. It took approximately 15 minutes to get on the internet, then find a radio, then to access a TV. I have 20+ yrs working and planning for disasters, and had a grasp of the enormity of the rescue effort that was going to be needed, even before the second attack, when we thought the first tower would stand. I was terribly affected when I realized that would be rescuers had become victims. I was glued to the media sources for approximately 90 minutes- as a Critical Incident Stess Debriefer I then realized that I was only increasing my stress level, so when things in Cleveland started getting strange- a possible "bomb plane" at landing at Hopkins Airport the support staff were given an option to leave to take care of family situations, etc. I volunteered to report to the hospital's emergency staff rather than go home, leaving my husband in the ED, to sit glued to the TV screen. Although I am not currently employed in the ED, I am familiar with staff and procedures because of my past and because my spouse worked there, so when I walked in and reported to the Supervisor that I was available for support work- I was immediately put to work. The first assignment was to call EVERYONE who normally worked in the ED (no matter what their shift) and to tell them that the hospital was in "disaster mode" and to report as soon as they could get through the massive traffic jams. This involved TELLING many staffers who normally slept days about what had happened because they had been sleeping or hadn't had their TVs on. Our normal staffing issues had become aggravated because the ED had several staff (nurses and MD)who had just realized that family and close associates had probably died, and several others who had to leave to take care of small children, because some schools and pre-schools had sent children home early. The hospital is a designated "receiving center" for national disaster victims, and we were gearing up for an influx of an unknown number of "walking wounded" that might have been flown to Cleveland from NYC, so my next assignment was to assist in the preparation of patient packets, triage tags and body bags. Here a major flaw in the hospitals' preparations was discovered- that 25 "victim packets" simply probably wouldn't be enough to handle the 200-250 patients we were expecting- and there was no place to get triage tags etc. made up- so an employee went on the internet, found a PICTURE of a triage tag, which was then printed by the hospital print shop! We then hand numbered them (six numbers per side) and tied toe tag strings in each. Assembling the rest of the packets took six of us volunteers, drawn from different departments approximately 3 hours. All this time, we are being showered by images from the media onthe attack - and speculation about "where else was going to be attacked". I personally was immensely affected by a camera catching a victim lying on the street, covered in dust and (to my trained eyes) dying- probably from blast injuries. Our hospital staff was invaluable in relaying parts of the bigger picture, particularly when all flights were grounded. By the time I was released from duty it was 8 PM Cleveland/NYC time) and I was more than ready to go home with my husband, but was up all night monitoring events and reactions around the world, via the internet and TV. As someone trained in Critical Incident Stess Debriefing I realized that I would NOT be able to work this through myself, so I went for counselling for the nightmares and flashbacks, but even just typing this causes my hands to shake. That how fragile life is, that even if we surround ourselves with "safety", that there will always be an element of insecurity. 2. That one definition of a "disaster" is a "sudden occurance of an event that is too large for the appropriate group to handle" and therefore the most important thing in disaster response planning is a reasonable, accurate evaluation of your (group's) capability. I was raised to be respectful of our flag and what it represented- now I am FIERCELY proud of the CITIZENRY it represents. I was working on H3 Blast Furnace in East Chicago Indiana for LTV Steel at the time with a fellow co-worker Chris. Our foreman came around to our job and informed us the "A plane had hit the World Trade Center". My fisrt response was shock and that how could such a accident have happen..... Well he returned a short time later to inform us (he as well as I are both ex Army guys so our brains were spinning at once) that another plane had hit the other tower! At that moment we were completing our job and picking up tools etc... I was angry, scared, shocked, and horrified all at the smae time. We hurried to a break area where someone had a television (contraband at work of course but under certain circumstances things are overlooked) all over the news was video of the planes hitting the towers then all the rumors of planes hitting the Pentagon and the White House (thankfully that didnt happen) the whole break room was filled with Angry and shocked men and a woman (incase she reads this *S*) foreman and workers alike, company and union, black, white, and hispanic, old and young, the room was filled with AMERICANS many of whom couldnt understand what was unfolding before us. Then they came down there wasnt a dry eye in the room. We talked and hugged eachother we cried throwing our machismo out the window. I was an Accountant at the local utility board in Knoxville, Tennessee. The day was to be one of celebration. My friend Naomi was celebrating her 36th birthday and our Accounting Team would normally take the birthday person to lunch. The celebration soon turned to tragedy as we heard that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center. We quickly turned on the television and found scenes of our beloved Nation being attacked. I felt sick and wanted to wake up from this terrible nightmare, but this was not a dream and the reality would soon become more devastating as the second Tower fell. The news of the Attack on the Pentagon and the devastation that the crash had caused quickly followed. The terror was not to be over as news of United Airlines Flight 93 had crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The lives lost were unbelievable as we all sit helpless. I prayed for our nation and for the families that had loved ones in all of the Attacks. My heart was broken, for our nation and for the families. My thoughts and prayers were on asking God for forgiveness as a person and as a Nation. I prayed that our Nation would turn to God and get back to the principles that this Great Nation was founded on. It took several days before our Accounting Team realized that Naomis birthday had not been celebrated. For Naomi, she would still each year get the strange looks when ask when her birthday was, as she would reply 9-11. We have grown stronger as a Nation and for a few months, I did see people believing and trusting God more. We let our guard down as a Nation and we paid the price. I woke up and heard the phone ringing, the muffled sound of my moms voice and the click of the TV being turned on. I went into the living room and my mom was watching TV in her PJs. The reality didn't hit me until Social Studies that day at school. During current events that's all we talked about. The rest of the day was kind of shock. Braman September 11, 2001 Rescue On September 11, 2001, I (SSG Christopher Braman) was on the phone with my wife who had called to tell me that two planes had just crashed through the Twin Towers in New York. I told her not to worry and that I was fine. I said I love you and I hung up the phone. At that moment, the building shook and smoke filled the hallways with panicking people. I immediately went across to the other office and yelled for everyone to get out. I went into the kitchen area and turned off the stoves. The doors were then secured and locked. I came out the emergency exit on the side of the impact. At that moment, a DPS guard came stumbling up with a woman and a baby. I grabbed the baby from her and we walked about fifty more feet where I laid down the woman and the baby. I noticed that the back of the baby's hair was shortened and singed. The baby and the woman were covered in ash and appeared to be in shock. The woman did not speak and the baby was playful, but silent. At that time, the guard yelled to me to get the EMS. I ran towards the point of impact, where I noticed an ambulance pulling up. I yelled to them "I need to get an EMS and that there was a woman and a baby that needed help". As I ran closer, a DPS officer with a stretcher was carrying a woman that was burnt from the back of her head to her knees (bright pink in color). I was helping to place her down. As I pulled my hand away from her back, the burnt skin had pulled away from her back. The EMS told me that more help was on the way. I noticed that fire engine #61 was putting out the fire from the aviation fire engine where two men were being pulled out. At that point, I ran between the burning fire engine and the two burning vehicles on the right. As I looked up for a moment, I saw images of motionless people in the windows. I immediately said a prayer "Dear Lord, please give us the strength for what we are about to do". At that point, I met a man (Colonel Ted Anderson) at the point of impact in the fire and smoke-filled area. He and I grabbed a woman that was sitting down clapping and choking because she could not speak (found later to be Ms. Sheila Moody). As we rushed her to safety, I noticed blood from her nose and her mouth. She was covered with ash and appeared to be badly burned. We continued to shuttle victims back and forth to safety. Colonel Anderson told me to get a body board from fire engine #61, and when I returned, a civilian (Terry Morrin) was standing next to him. Together, we continued around the side trying to find another way in because the entrance area that we had been going through had collapsed. People were watching and panicking. At that point, someone from the crowd yelled out, "another plane is inbound and to get the hell out of there". We noticed a DPS officer on our left side coming out with a man who had his left eyeball hanging out of its socket. We continued to try to get back into the building to help our fallen comrades. A general ran up to us and told us that we were not allowed to go back in and that we were told to evacuate the area because there was an incoming plane. As we were forced across south parking towards the tunnel that leads underneath the freeway to Crystal City, we noticed a group of men with stretchers that were being forced to leave the area. I (SSG Christopher Braman) yelled to the men for them to stay together, regroup around the other side, and to get back to us as fast as they could. Colonel Anderson, Terry Morrin, and I (SSG Christopher Braman) ignored the plea to get back to safety and we continued to push forward towards the area of impact. Page Two At that time, the Sergeant Major of the Army (Tilley) instructed me (SSG Christopher Braman) to throw him behind the parking cement barrier if another plane were to come in. Colonel Anderson and I noticed a medical triage being set up where the two firemen from the aviation fire engine were being cared for. We noticed an FBI agent standing there and Colonel Anderson told him that we needed to keep going back in. FBI agent White said that he would take the "butt chewing" and for us to go back in. As Colonel Anderson, Terry Morrin, and I (SSG Christopher Braman) started running back towards the impact area, we were instructed to move 500 meters back because of the plane that was in route. We sat on the 110 freeway watching the building burn from the point of impact to the other side of the aviation tower. Colonel Anderson instructed Terry and I to stand fast and to figure out a plan of action. At this time, more medical help had arrived including medical doctors, nurses, and anyone willing to help. With the changing of new chiefs of the FBI and FEMA, we had organized in teams five different times due to the chaos. When a plan of action had come about, it was already nightfall. Colonel Anderson obtained a fireman's face mask and had gone back in with a fireman. When he came back, he informed me about the victims' bodies and the ankle-deep water everywhere. At that time, we were informed that the 3rd Infantry would come to relieve us and for us to go home. It was approximately 10:30 p.m. when I met a man from FEMA and a Lieutenant Colonel (Lt. Edmundson). They were looking for someone who was in charge of the morgue. I introduced myself to them as SSG Christopher Braman and that I was trained on a ranger combat search and rescue team and that I would stay and help with the morgue recovery. Lt. Col. Edmundson informed me that she was a nurse from the Department of Defense and that she would pronounce the victims deceased. I told her that I would be her NCOIC of the morgue recovery team and she agreed. She gave me a list of items that we would need. She informed me that there would be a meeting at 5:00 a.m. the next morning at the site. I fell asleep on the grass and I woke up with the noise from the water being sprayed on the building. 3D INF Captain Nuerenberg came to talk to me about the morgue recovery team and instructed me that his men would be the ones carrying the bodies out. Morning came fast and I acquired all the equipment that Lt. Col. Edmundson had asked me to gather from the FBI supply agent i.e. body bags, face masks, flashlights, and body suits for recovery. When I saw Lt. Col. Edmundson, she had just come back from the 5:00 a.m. meeting with FEMA. They were trying to figure out refrigeration for the recovered bodies. I told them that the inspection point area had a refrigeration storage facility and that I would talk to the DPS officer in charge since I personally knew him. I walked down to talk to the officer and explained to him that I was in charge of the morgue recovery team and that we needed refrigeration for the recovered bodies. At that time, he told me that there was a Giant Foods 50-foot refrigeration truck that we could use. When I returned to inform Lt. Col. Edmundson of the Giant Foods truck, she said that it would work, but that we would need a vehicle to transport the bodies to the Giant Foods truck in the inspection area. At that point, 54th Morgue Army Company showed up without orders to help. I got together with CSM Cuffey (MDW CSM) and he instructed 54th Co. to stay at Ft. Meyers and not to worry. As we began to set up Camp Unity and organize our morgue teams, the FBI instructed us that we would be going in on the far side of the impact area first. As our teams entered the building, Sgt. Major Butts informed us that he would be the last man out of the building each time we carried a body. Page Three The hallways were flooded with water, slime, and debris up to our ankles. The hallways became smaller and smaller with every turn we made towards the impact area. The areas were no bigger than five feet with water on the floor and no area to carry the stretchers through. In many areas, we had to carry the body bags through the debris and the smoke-filled room to the men with the stretchers that carried them out of the building. Civilian Eric Jones and I would bag the bodies and tag them for the FBI forensic teams and call for Sgt. Major Butts' men to carry them out. From there, the men would deliver the bodies to the refrigeration truck where the doctor would pronounce them dead and the chaplains would give the victims their last rights. As the next team would come in, we placed Ben-Gay under our noses before we replaced our ventilator masks upon entering again because the combination smell of death and jet fuel fumes were so immense. This went on for three days. On the third day, Major Pantaleo, (a Marine Corps Major who was inside of the refrigeration truck helping Lt. Col. Edmundson verify the bodies and the tags that I would write in the dark with the use of a flashlight with the FBI forensic team), had noticed a Marine Corps flag hanging on the fourth floor that was unscathed by the fire. We decided to get the Marine Corps flag that represented complete defiance of the terrorist attack against America. Major Pantaleo, civilian Eric Jones, and I talked to the fire chief in charge to see if we were able to retrieve the flag. The fire chief instructed us to use the crane operator to retrieve the Marine Corps flag. We used the crane to retrieve the flag and we walked the Marine Corps flag to return it to the Marine Corps General. While in route, we were stopped by the speaker of the Congressional House, Senator Lott, and a few other senators thanking us for all our efforts with the morgue recovery team and retrieving one of America's symbols. We proceeded to return the flag to the Marine Corps General. The Marine Corps General met us outside of the Marine Corps Annex and we presented him with the Marine colors. He then turned and gave the colors to a man who was anxiously standing and awaiting the flag that was retrieved from his office. Knowing that we returned the Marine flag, it brought great self-esteem to us all. We then turned back to continue our recovery work. On Friday, September 15, 2001, we were told that the original morgue team was being relieved due to lack of sleep and the amount of stress placed upon us in the past few days. We all looked for a place to burn our clothes due to the amount of human matter and chemicals that were accumulated on them. As we were leaving, we all felt that there was so much more work to be done and we wanted to continue doing our jobs. As I got into my car, I noticed victims' families lingering around the Red Cross tents in hopes to find their family members still alive, but we knew the truth. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11th was to mark the last day of a six week holiday across the United States. The day before the group of had visted Washington DC and were then camping just a short distance from the nations captial. We had planned then to drive to New York where we would end the trip and go our separate ways. On the morning of the 11th around 10am a friend had been to the main building to shower, instead she heard the news of the planes having flown into the Twin Towers and ran back to tell us. As I remember we all made our way to the TV room where most of the campsite had gathered to watch it all unfold on CNN, everyone was in a state of disbelief and shock. Many of the friends with whom I was travelling knew people that were supposed to be working either in or close to the World Trade Center and so the next few hours were taken up with frantic phone calls to friends and family to check that they were safe and well, all the while the events were developing, the towers had fallen, there were other planes told about, the Pentagon had also been hit. I'm sure you all know the details. Also due to the nature of our trip, it being so flexible, we soon realised that our own families had not way of teling where we were. All they knew was that we were either in Washington DC or New York. So more phone calls. Eventually we decided to continue on our way and so we drove to New Jersey home of one of the offices of the tour company. The continued to be very surreal, we stopped at a service station and the atmosphere was unreal, the tv's were all on and masses of people were gathered around them all hoping to here more about survivors, dreading news of another plane. It felt at this point that no one knew when or how this day would end. The one thing that will always stay with me is how so many people told of how they thought when they first turned on the news that they were just watching another bad holywood movie. My life has in no way changed to the exent as it must have done for people who have lost close friends and family but I can honestly say that it has affected me deeply as I'm sure it has for many people. For one knowing how lucky it was that we weren't either in the centre of Washington or New York has made me appreciate more the complexities of fate, how important family and friends are and also how you really have to make the most out of the precious time you have on this Earth. It's also made me realise how ignorant we can be of the ways of the world, the politics, the different cultures and views. I was in first period volleyball practice when one of our coaches had come in and told us that an airplane had hit one of the twin towers. At that time I had thought it was only an accident. Then I continued on to second period Leadership class when the second plane hit the other tower and at that time i knew that it could have not just been an accident. Since September 11, 2001 somethings have been different in my life, especially my emotions toward this country. When I think about September 11 I think about all the lives that were taken from their families and it makes me think what I would have done if any of my family members had been involved. I also learned not to take anything for granted and to be grateful for what God has given me. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the thing that should be remembered most is all the firefighters and policeman and anyone who tried to save lives. They are the world's greatest hero's and they will never be forgotten. I did put a flag in my bedroom window after the tragic events of September 11. When I see the American flag or when I hear the star spangled banner I think of that lives lost, the families left incomplete, and the hero's of America.
