NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11, 2001, I woke up to my mom telling me to turn on the television and watch the news. I got up, and as I was eating breakfast, I watched the tragic videos of the terrorist planes run into the side of the twin towers in New York. At first, I didn't realize the seriousness of the accident. I just thought the planes had crashed on accident because I had never even thought that it could be terrorism. Terrorism had never been as issue in America before, so we were all shocked to find out that it was. I thought our country was at peace with every other country. The footage of the people running away from the buildings with gas masks on is what really stuck with me and made me realize how tragic and serious this situation was. I felt horrible for the families waiting to get that phone call from their loved ones who were dead. I felt horrible for the firefighters who died in this horrible accident also. I have to say that I am proud of all who helped, put their lives on the line, and who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. I remember recieving a phone call from a friend and she asked me if I was watching the Television I lived in (Columbus Ohio at the time) and I tole her NO but I turned it on to see what she was talking about because all she said was the W.T.C. was on fire just as I tuned in the second plane hit and all I could do was stand in my Bedroom in disbelief like this can not be real . I had to be at work at 10.00am and I rode the City Bus, I remember talking to a lady at the bus stop and she Knew nothing about it and was stunned when I told her what had happened. but at the time I did not now we were under attack . I arrived at Work and My Boss had the radio on and we were listening as things developed Around 12.30pm The Mall across the street recieved a fake Bomb threat and was being evacuated and since the Store I worked at (Payless Shoe Source) was about 2 blocks from the Ohio State Capitol and Downtown Columbus came to a Halt we were told to close I posted a sign on the Door saying "Sorry we are Closed Due to National Event's" and went home and Hung my Flag and Cried NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Living on the West Coast of the United States, I woke up well into the events of September 11. In fact, my boss called, waking me up, to ask if I had seen the news yet and if I knew where my best friend Aimee was. I honestly had no idea, and it terrorfied me. You see, Aimee lived in New Jersey and was working in a limited capacity at the World Trade Center. When we had spoken the night before, she was so excited about her first trip to that bar up on the 101st floor (what is it called? Window to the World?) that previous weekend and how the next time I came out to visit we just HAD to go there. She also told me how the trial she was working on that day had been postponed, but didn't say for how long. Still on the phone, I turn on the television just in time to see the second tower fall. Newscasters were trying so desperately to keep up with the current happenings that it took me several minutes to piece together what was going on. I sat in abolute shock. I got off the phone with my boss and called Aimee at home as she didn't carry a cell phone. I got the answering machine, and started leaving a calm message that got more and more frantic with every word. Finally her roommate picked up the phone, crying hysterically. Aimee was not in the building that day and was safe in New Jersey. There were so many other people that both of them knew who were still unaccounted for. I called my parents to check on them. My father works in San Francisco - was he in danger? I called Aimee's mother to tell her that Aimee was safe; she hadn't even seen the news yet. After staring at the TV for another 45 minutes, I left for work, stopping at a local bakery for breakfast. It was so surreal - nothing was any different than it was the day before. Planes are being hijacked, bulidings are crashing to the ground, people are dying and here I am getting my coffee and scone, normal as you please. Was this real? I work at a church, and we had a departmental meeting scheduled for that morning. As we gathered, it was clear that no business would be accomplished that day. We shared our stories, accounted for our loved ones across the globe (including one co-worker who was on vacation in England at the time), and prayed. The phones rang off the hook - friends and family called in all day from all parts of the country to check in. I never realized that working in Los Angeles or San Francisco, at the Department of Justice or around the country giving presentations on software development could be so dangerous. All of a sudden, location was truly everything, which made things very uncertain in regards to my nephew in the Navy - no one knew where his ship was. The next few days was a fog of images, stories, phone calls, tears, vigils, services, emails, and numbness. All of my family and friends were accounted for, including my nephew who sent us an email that said little more than that he was alive and safe. Our church had a special mass on September 12 and had an improptu prayer service on Friday the 14th. I attended a candlight vigil, watched the "telethon," wore ribbons and pins and displayed an American flag in my office window. I kept busy and informed so that I could say I was doing something and not feel so helpless. All I could do wait for the other shoe to drop, whatever that may be. My feelings in those first weeks were so conflicted; I was scared and sorrowful, but at the same time felt untouched by what had happened. Here was this terrible, horrific tragedy, and after a week or so, the only signs of anything being "out of the ordinary" was the outpouring of patriotism from every corner. Our skyline wasn't changed, our commutes hadn't been altered, our mourning of the dead was not as intense as the East Coast simply because we were not as directly affected. Sure airport security was completely changed, and every mention of a report from the FBI made me pause, but life was still going on. After a while, the other shoe didn't fall. She had driven the kids to school and was on her way back to the house when she heard a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers. I raced downstairs and had just turned on the TV as she burst into the house. We watched as flames shot out of the tower and thought that this must be some awful accident. Slowly we became aware of a second plane visible in the sky and were transfixed as it hit the second tower. It became obvious this was no accident. News was coming so fast! It was hard to process the horror of what we were watching. We became aware of a third plane hitting the Pentagon as we watched the towers burn. We know people in NYC but were fairly sure that we didn't have a presonal connection to anyone in those buildings--but it FELT personal. It felt like I knew those people trapped inside and I prayed hard for them to escape. My sister and I were kneeling in front of the TV and all of a sudden I heard myself blurt out "It going down!" I am not sure how I knew but it must have been a change in the way the tower looked--it seemed to flex slightly and then just let go. We watched helpless as people ran for thier lives and other were surely lost forever. There was no question in my mind very shortly into this horrific day that terroists were at work and I was griped with fear. My husband was in India, in a city that was already tense because of friction between Hindus and Muslims. The phone rang at about 10am and I told my husbnd what was going on--he began to gather with other Americans and British citizens to watch events unfold on CNN International. Coverage they watched included videos of celebrations in Pakistan and Afganistan--people cheering the distruction of important American landmarks and the loss of American lives. As my husband passed this information to me over the phone I shared with him the information that a fourth plane had gone down in PA--its probable target in DC spared by brave passengers. I told him Air raffic was stopped and he was now trapped on the Indian SubContinent. While speaking to my husband, my sister and I watched as the second tower and all those people disintigrated. We couldn't even cry a! nymore. As the day unfolded and the truth about who had done these horrible things came to light I found myself feeling very restless. I felt like I needed to do something, burn off some energy. The next thing I knew I was standing in my garden in the driving rain pulling out plants that I no longer wanted. As little as three hours before those Gladiolli were no problem--but now they HAD to come out. I need to do something physical, to burn off some of the tension. Soaked to the skin, muddy from pulling out bulbs I could finaly really understand that I was experiencing greif like I never had before. Grief for all those lost lives, all those injured people, and for America's innocence. Maybe it was time to view the world differently but not like that, not at so high a cost. I realized I felt the need for vengence--a surprising need for a pacifist--but a strong need indeed. Standing there dripping and crying I recognised the fact that the world as I knew it was not the world my childr! en would grow up in--and it made me mad. My husband made it home 10 very frantic days later--flying in a wide path around Afganistan. He got to come home--so many husbands, fathers, brothes, uncles, mothers, sisters and Aunts did not. I am not afraid to fly or travel and I do not feel as if I live with any fear. I am more careful about the reality of terrorists -- similar to how I felt when I lived in the UK. The heroism of those who rushed into those buildings to attempt to preserve life, each and every person who simply had the bad luck to be employed at the WTC or the Pentagon, and the manner in which America pulled together in support. I was getting ready for work when my phone rang at around 7:30pst. My friend Jan, from Delaware, asked me if I was listening to the news. I said, 'No.' She told me to turn my TV on, that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, and that my friend Rod Wotton was at work there. I turned on the TV and was riveted to the images I saw there. Jan also told me that Brenda, Rod's sister-in-law, and my best friend, was on the way to New Jersey to be with her sister Pat, who is Rod's wife. Pat was pregnant and the baby was due in a few days. Pat and Brenda's parents were already at Pat's house in New Jersey, preparing to help with the baby's birth. I asked Jan to keep me posted, took my portable radio and went to work. There was an eerie silence on the bus ride to work. Something was definitely up. When I got to work, the radio was on and my co-workers were talking about what had happened. One person stayed at home, afraid to leave her house. Another employee left early to get her young daughter out of school near Los Angeles International Airport. Our company closed about 2 hour after I got there. I went home watched TV and waited for word on Rod. During the course of the day I got several phone calls. In one call, I was told that Rod had called home on his cell phone, asking his father-in-law to take care of his family. He said he couldn't get out. Debris was blocking the exits and it was hard to breathe. I prayed, called my mother and asked her to pray too. I had a hard time with feelings of helplessness. I lived in California and there wasn't much I could do from 3000 miles away exce[t give emotional support. I had moved from DC to California 3 years ago. I used to commute via the Pentagon Metro Station every day into downtown DC, where I worked at Internation Square. I was shocked at the Pentagon bombing and worried about many friends who use the Metro to commute. I thought that if I was in DC, I could at least volunteer to work at GW Hospital. I felt like I would go crazy from inactivity. The feeling of helplessness was pervasive. I stayed glued to the TV for the rest of the day. I made phone calls and sent email to friends back east. I had to hear if people were okay. I don't remember much about the rest of that week, except that I didn't go to work for a couple of days. I just couldn't handle getting calls about people and their computer problems. I spent the time watching TV, praying and hoping for good news about Rod from New York. None came. I really appreciate what people in other countries have had to go through with things like suicide bombers and war that happens on their shores. I am closer to people than ever before. I procrastinate less. I know that every moment is important and this moment is all I may have. Rod's second child, Rodney Patrick Wotton, was born on September 19. What should be remembered about September 11th is the wake-up call that the events were to people worldwide, not just in the US. Look at people in the eye and see another human being - somebody's child. Speak to your neighbors. Don't be so self-absorbed. I think that we can accomplish a lot if we treat each other better. Remember the heroes. The policemen, fireman and ordinary citizens who rescued people. Some lived, some gave their lives in service to their fellow human beings. Remember the families of the victims. These people's lives will never be the same. Remember that terrorism happens worldwide. We are not immune. We are not perfect and we should be looking for solutions to our differences that do no involve killing each other. We should remember that there are many people all over the world who have lived with terrorism all their lives. We have been very lucky. And finally, remember to take care or yourself. Be gentle with yourself. Be good to yourself. Pursue your dreams. Love your family and friends. Every person you meet is a potential friend. I have written a song, a memorial to Rod. It's called "Too Far Away". I burned it onto a CD and have been raising money for the Wotton Children's Fund with the proceeds. Although I live on the outskirts of Shanksville, PA I was at home that morning with my baby boy Dawson who was one at that time. It was a georgeous day and a gentle breeze was blowing outside. My other children were off to school for the morning and I just settled in to watch the TODAY show on television. I can remember watching the interruption of news to tell us about the first plane in the first tower. I called my husband who works at the local state corrections facility and he said that they knew nothing about it there. I then hung up and went back to watching tv when the second plane hit the second towner. That is when I became concerned knowing that something "was not an accident" at that time. I was glued to my tv the whole morning. Suddenly, my house shook. (Around our area it isn't uncommon for a large coal truck to tip over and create the ground to shake hard and that is what I thought it was at first) I then called my husband again and asked him if he tho! ught I should be concerned as I was standing on my front porch speaking to him. I was concerned as we live near the turnpike tunnels on the mountains and wondered if we were entering into some kind of war if I should worry. Then I saw a huge black cloud move very slowly across the air over the distance. I kept thinking that something didn't feel right. "What was this?" Then the tv reported that another plane crashed somewhere near Pittsburgh, PA and I thought it was too coincidental, the black cloud to be anything else but the plane...I just knew. Then a bit later, the report said Shanksville, PA. Still being in my night clothes, I slipped a pair of shorts on, grabbed the baby and a bottle and out the door we went to collect my other children at Shanksville school. My heart was pounding and my mind was over reacting. I was driving irratically on a road that wasn't fit to go over 30 MPH, but these were my kids and this was my town. I was hoping to pull onto main str! eet to see my familiar sites and to see people going about their business as usual. As I pulled onto Main St. life looked okay and as soon as I spotted a neighbor of mine who was picking up a child from daycare, I knew that our school was still intact. When I got to the school, it was a circus. Parents quickly signing out kids for the day till they found out what was happening in our sleep little town. My children were frightened as well, telling me that books fell out of their desk and that a light bulb fell out of a fixture. They knew that a plane crashed but they were very confused as to why so many were scared and pulling children out of school. Teachers did their best to explain the least to children without making them scared. As I went to check on my sister's house along Skyline Road (the road that the plane crashed) with my children, I was surprised not to see emergency workers flooding the area yet. It still seemed quite still except for the debris in her lawn. I will never forget that feeling standing there with the debris surrounding me and the kids. It became a reality that terror was litterally in our backyards. Then a fireman directed me and the children to evacuate the area... that is when the emergeny efforts began. In some ways, the American way of living will have to be lived with a cautious approach whereas before, everything in this country was so very carefree. In my mind, I will not let the "terroristic" thinking overtake my freedoms to do things that I used to do before Sept. 11, 01, however, some of the things may have to be done differently. I most definately love to see the country painted in red, white and blue and the patriotic spirit that the terrorist attacks have created. The loss of human live is difficult, but we have always been a nation on strong people. This was just a harsh reminder that we should not take things or people for granted...we should cherish all that God has given us. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The unity of this country, the outpouring to help and volunteer. For once, whites, blacks, hispanice, arabs, muslims, jews, indians, etc. as well as Republican, Democrats and other groups put their ideas and differences aside to think about our American human race. Why can't it always be like that? The innocent loss of civilian lives, the loss of military lives caused by this war on terror, the loved ones and friends who had to suffer the pain of those losses. Also, the 3 locations (New York, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, PA) Some who survived, some who will live with the constant memory and the many who perished. The heroic efforts of the rescue workers and bystanders that assisted without any thought. The way our flag waves high across our country and the spirit of the human heart in the time of need. I have collected flags for about 8 years. It was a hobbie that I started because I love the colors and the history of our country. So needless to say, I have many flags throughout my home flying high. My feelings have not changed toward the flag since Sep. 11, as I have always felt strongly about being an American. I can remember as a little girl, my father explained to me about the flag and that it should never touch the ground. I can still see him pushing in the smaller flags around the corners of our home on Memorial Day. It is just so nice to see everyone taking pride in something that has always been there... I remember turning on the TV to watch the news as I did every moring to get traffic and weather information. When I turned on the TV it was not what I expected. The WB chanell 9 in chicago, Illinois was reporting that a plane had hit the WTC. Thinking it was as accident I continued to watch in horror. Wondering how were those people going to get out? And then the second one hit and I was speachless. I called my boyfriend at work and asked him i he had heard. He was completely unaware. He turned on the TV at work and could not bevelive it himself. I thought should I go to work? As many other Americans I had no idea what the rest of this morning was going to hold. I got on the highway and listened to my regular talk radio station WLS 890 AM. Then the news that the Pentagon was smoking. Noone knew at the time that it had been hit. After the confirmation that another plane had acttually hit the Pentagon. I remember feeling as if the sky was falling. Feeling as if I had no cover. Helplessness with out end. I couldnt wait to get to work to be with my coworkers. I listened all day to the talk radio station in horror. When I heard that it was highjackers I was completely shocked. How can this be dont we have security? And the hearing the towers fall. I cant even describe my thoughts and broken heart for the familys. Thankfully I did not know anyone in the WTC, Pentagon, or the field where the last plane fell, but I pray for everyone who did. While in the car she told me that the WTT was attacked. After reaching school, I went to my English teacher, who was very patriotic. She was in tears as she was watching the news on TV. In the early morning of September 11, I was awakened by my mom yelling about a plane that had crashed into the World Trade Center. I was shocked by the news and stumbled out of bed still half asleep to see the live footage of the first tower flaming and bellowing smoke across the New York skyline. Shortly thereafter, the second tower was hit, along with the Pentagon, and it was clear in all our minds that the United States was being attacked. My parents and I watched in awe as one and then the other tower collapsed. Seeing the horrific footage over and over made us both saddened and enraged. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11, 2001 I was in Moab, UT at Zion National Park. It was the last day of a vacation I was spending with my friend Kristie Jones. Kristie and I live in Maryland, near Washington, DC. At the time, I was a Washington, DC based Flight Attendant with United Airlines. We were using my passes for our trip, and had been planning on flying back to Dulles from Las Vegas on the red-eye the night of September 11. That all changed. We had slept in, and woke up about 9:15 am, Mountain Time. The big story the night before on CNN was a rumor of whether or not Michael Jordan was going to return to the NBA. We awoke, lazily, and turned the TV back on. We were greeted with CNN...breaking news at the bottom, and a split screen of New York City and Washington, DC....black and smoking. By the time we turned the television on, both towers had been hit and collapsed, the Pentagon had been attacked, and there were rumors of a 4th plane crashing in Pennsylvania. In a matter of seconds, we had to process what most of America had seen unfold over the previous 2 and a half hours. We were out of cell phone range in the middle of Utah, and had no idea what had been going on. And as a Flight Attendant, my cell phone was my link to all my family and friends, no matter where I was. And they all knew that the only time I turned my phone off was when I was flying. As we watched and tried to comprehend it all, it seemed surreal. We began to make phone calls to our families. I checked my messages and had so many voice mails....Julie...i'm worried, call me as soon as you can...Over and over again. I will never forget the moment that I heard that the weapons were commercial airlines...My office in the sky. I was still unable to really take it all in, but I remember wondering if any of my friends were working that day. And I remember being angry. They hijacked MY PLANES....I could have been on those planes. I probably had been on those very planes at some point or another. I then immediately went into planning/survival mode. How were we going to get back to Maryland?? I was scheduled to fly on Friday, September 14. We ended up driving 2400 miles back to Maryland in 2 and a half days...missing most of the televised news, but listening to the radio much of the way across the country. On September 15, 2001 I was called to fly to London. The first day that flights were going anywhere. I was terrified, but I went. I spent the next day, my birthday, in London. Flying back on Monday, September 17, we flew close enough to see the sklyline of New York. The new skyline...or what we could see of it through the still rising smoke. That trip was my last. I knew that with the cutbacks, I would be furloughed. And I decided that it just wasn't worth it anymore. I admire those who continue to fly, but I just couldn't do it anymore. September 11 will forever be a day that divdes history. It was a day that I don't think I have fully dealt with, even almost 10 months later. It was a day that changed us all, brought us together, and made us appreciate our freedom. It was a day that no one will ever forget. At first I didn't know what it was, but then I found out. I was totally shocked. I never knew that such a bad thing could happen. It was the largest tragedy that ever happend in my entire 13 years of life that I knew of. The tragedy of 9-11-01 will be in my life forever. And to see those terrorists laugh. It sure made the Arabs look bad even though they are not. One of my best friends is from Jordan and he says Arabs are some of the most friendly people. That day I was somewhat scared to walk home from school. But I knew that God was watching over me so the worry dissappeared. I was very sad when I saw the plane hit and heard the people screaming. It was about 10 a.m. My friend and I were laughing about something, as usual, when the principal's voice came on the speaker. As soon as he started to speak, I could sense something was wrong. He told us the twin towers in New York had been hit just minutes ago by what was believed to be terrorists. I was shocked, but not really able to understand the full impact this would have on our nation. It seemed far away. After all, I was in Manassas, Va, a whole 6-7 hours away from the Big Apple. It didn't seem to affect me. But then, I heard the Pentagon had been hit. Many parents in my area work there, and that really hit close to home. Many were worried, few were laughing, and all were awaiting more information. The event was on the news almost 24-7 for the next couple weeks, and is discussed often even today, 2 years later. My life as an individual hasn't greatly changed since September 11, but our nation has. I became a little more grateful for my blessings, a little more appreciative of life, and more loving to my family. The nation as a whole for a few months afterward became more unified, more kind in general one to another. Much of that has worn off now, but the memory still remains. The strength and unity of our nation through adversity should be remembered as well as the courage and bravery of our fire fighters, law enforcement, government, and ordinary citizens whose heroism may never be recognized. Also, above all, we should remember our Heavenly Father, who watched over this nation through this crisis. He is to be credited for our opportunity for freedom, which we can always have if we never forget him. President Bush should also be remembered as one of the best presidents there ever was. I was working and received a call from my husband that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. I thought he was kidding. I turned on the radio to hear that a second plane had hit the second tower of the WTC. I went into shock and called my family. All I could hear was the radio reports as to what was happening. The internet was jammed and I couldn't get on the news sites. Rumors were spreading about attacks on the White House and Congress after the Pentagon strikes. We have an Air Force recruiting office down the hall from our office and they headed to Kelly Air Force base within an hour of the attacks...that brought home the terror of the morning. I finally went home two hours after the attack after picking up my daughter from daycare. I couldn't work and no one else could in the office either. I watched television throughout the day and night devastated by the events and wondering how a people could hate so much. I collected the newspapers for the following two weeks and after reading them I have sealed them away for my daughter. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life remains the same. I still do the daily activities that I did before and will continue to fly. I do find that the Patriotic songs I have always listened to and that have always filled me with pride now make me cry. I get weepy at the site of the American Flag and the images of the WTC when viewing an old movie. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everything. The site of people helping people. Strangers reaching out and helping their fellow man in a time of great crisis. People coming together and crossing barriers to comfort and help one another. Yes, I stood in line for two hours with my three year old daughter to get a flag. I had always said I would get one and fly it before September 11. I have since taken that first flag down and written on the side "Sept. 11, 2001." This is for my daughter's collection that I have been putting together. A rememberance of why America is so great and cannot be squashed. My feelings toward the flag today are the same as they were prior to the attacks. I Love the flag and what it stands for...Freedom, Liberty and Justice. I will always have a flag flying in front of my house and will teach my daughter the significance of the flag and what it stands for, not just words, but the meaning and spirit and the pride. When This All Happened My Mom Was Gettin Ready For Work Listening To Rick Dees On KIIS FM And My Mom Thought He Was Telling Some Kind Of Joke. So Turned On The Tv And Saw The 2nd Plane Hit. She Immediatly Came And Woke Me Up Because My Aunt And Uncle Lived In New York. This Event Was Very Tragic. Wars Don't Happen That Often And I Never Thought One Would Go On When I Was Still Alive, Much Less At The Age Of 13. The Event Was On Every Channel For Weeks And Weeks And It Was Hard For People To Forget What Happened. I Didn't Know Anyone Who Passed Away In The Accident But My Heart Goes Out To Everyone Who Does. Hi my name is John Bernier and I remember clearly where I was when I experienced the events of September 11, 2001. I was then a junior attending Boston College High School,and I was notified in my moring English class. The former principal, Mr. Kameza, spoke over the loud speaker that "two planes had hit the world trade towers in New York at...". First I was relaxed and really did not know what this meant and had no clue that it was a terrorist act. Then a few periods later after hearing mounds of rumors meantime throughout school, I saw the highlights broadcasted on television in my government clas with Mrs. Keogh. I saw video of the planes hitting, then speculation about the Pentagon,then I saw people jumping from the remains of the buildings to escape the flames. I watched it untilit was time to go to school. At school, instead of having regular announcements, the principle told allt he teachers to turn to the news. I had no homework that day because in all my classes, I was watching the news and seeing what was going on. In evry class for everybody, it was the samething. I have been more careful about life and about the other students and people around me. I have also been more open and lovingful to everybody that i know and that i don't know. Since they were brave enough to go into the building and save a lot of the people in the twin towers.We lost a lot of them and that's why we need to remember them.
