That night I had nightmares and I couldnt sleep all night, when I started falling asleep, around six oclock, my step-mother woke me up and told me that somebody is bombing New York (she didnt know what was going on at the time). I jumped out of bad and ran to watch news, to find out what is going on. I couldnt understand what is going on. My brain refused to understand, even try to understand. On TV I saw New York in smoke. Just less than two months ago I have been there, in New York. I couldnt believe that this is really happening. No, wait a minute, this is not happening! It is probably some of those Hollywood movies, and this all is not real. My mind tried to wake up, from this nightmare. My mind went blank, my subconsciously I tried to escape, to protect my mind from this horrible information. I will wake up any minute and everything will be fine. On my way to school I listened to the radio. At that time all the information everybody knew was that hijacked plane crashed into north tower of World Trade Center. In school we watched News in all classes. Which made some of kids happy that they dont have to do anything, I think they just didnt realize at the time that it is really happening. I learned some words that day, such as hijack, terrorists, attack, collapses, crashed, and some others, that I wish I would learn in other circumstances. As I watched news, I found out that Islamic terrorists hijacked four planes. And that two of them crashed in WTC, another one flew in Pentagon, and last one of them crashed in forest. I felt so defenseless and powerless. Understanding of what has happened scared me. I wanted to run away, to just wake up and realize that it was just a bad dream. I think that that was the day when I really became an American. The way I think and do things is so different from what it was before September 11th. Everybodys live in United States and in the world had changed. Now, looking back one year ago, I can say that it is not the same anymore, and it never will be the same anymore. The way people treat each other changed. American nation came together. We support each other more, we show how much we care and express our feelings everyday. Whole nation became stronger and more patriotic. All together we overcame this fear and sadness. Even though, it badly reflected on economics of United States, spiritually it made people much stronger. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The death of 3 066 people cant be forgotten. We must remember people who died and how hard it was for our nation. Also, we should remember soldiers who are fighting for our country in Afghanistan. And we should not judge whole nation or religion by one person. If Osama bin Laden is Islamic, that doesnt mean that we should fear and disrespect all Islamic people. This world is not perfect, but we still can change it. If everybody will do a little bit, than all together we can make this world better. Yes, I did fly an American flag after the events of September 11th. It feels more secure now. They do everything that is possible to make it more secure and to check each person before letting them on plane. However, I believe that problem is not with American Flag, but with people, and there is nothing that American Flag could do to change everybody in this world. There are terrorists and if they really want to hurt people there always is a way to do it, and I dont think that there is anything that could completely stop them from doing what they want to. Humans mind doesnt have borders and it is really sad, that some people use their mind to find the way to kill more people in one day. As long as there are people who really want to do a terrorist act it wont be one hundred percents secure. It is really sad that people look for a way to go around the rules and security in order to hurt somebody. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My best friend from high school was visiting for the week. We've known each other for over 50 years. We had just finished eating breakfast and the TV was on in the background. We were planning to leave shortly for Queens to help my Daughter's father-in-law who was running for Counselman. Ellen had gone to the bedroom to get dressed when I saw the images on TV of the first plane hitting. I remember thinking "how could this be possible". One of my first thoughts were that this has to be deliberate, since it was a clear day and the World Trade Center was clearly visible. Of course, when the 2nd plane hit - there was no longer a question of this being an "accident". We drove to Dix Hills to pick up my daughter, only to find out that the primary had been cancelled. The rest of the day was a daze of hugging family, listening to radio or watching TV in disbelief, anger and sadness. I vividly remember coming home later that day heading East on the Long Island Expressway and no cars were heading west. The only vehicles on that side of the Expressway were emergency vehicles heading into New York City. The emptiness of that road that usually holds bumper-to-bumper traffic was a solemn and frightening reminder of what was happening in New York City. That evening, numerous friends from all over the country called to make sure we were alright and to find out if anyone we knew had been in the vicintity of the Trade Center. Fortunately, we were able to answer that we were fine and that noone we directly knew worked in the Trade Center or was a fire or police person in the area. The hardest thing over the next couple of days was the overwhelming feeling of helplessness. While we joined others in collecting money and items to send into the City, nothing seemed enough. I guess we all wanted to do something to "make it better" knowing that nothing could "make it better"!! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Priorities in my life have changed. Family and friendships have taken precendence over other things. I am more fearful of traveling and cancelled trips scheduled for post 9/11. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I remember waking up really early that morning because my husband goes to work early. I couldn't sleep so I turned on the T.V. (at approx. 5:30 a.m. pacific time) to watch Don Imus on MSNBC. All of a sudden, they show the first Tower on fire. My husband and I watched things unfold and then to our horror, we witnessed the second plane hit Trade Tower 2. The rest of the morning was a blur... trying to get the kids to school without letting them know what was going on. Watching the T.V. and seeing the buildings collapse. When I finally got them to school, parents were crying on the playground. My school Principal came running to me (I am the PTA President) and exclaimed that one of our parents at the school was in Trade Tower 2 and was missing. It turned out to be a friend of mine's husband John Hart. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when all of a suddent another friend of mine was on her cell phone and shrieked "No".... "Not Tom"... (this was all unfolding at 8:45A our time). She was talking about Thomas Burnett on the flight that crashed into the fields in Pennsylvania. He worked for someone that she knew. So....... here I was standing on the playground of my child's school at 8:45A in a little town in Northern California, and was already bearing witness to two tradegies that had struck our community. It was unbelieveable. John Hart never made it to safety that day. He was lost amongst the thousands. Over the past year, I have watched my friend Laurie stoically try to heal and get her four children through this nightmare. It has been very close to my heart and it is my hope that we will all find a little bit of closure on the anniversary of this haenous event. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. As most people will remember, Sept. 11, 2001 was a brilliant early fall morning. The sky was achingly blue and the colors were just beginning to show themselves. I never have TV on during the day and I had just turned off NPR's Early Edition so that I could do some paper work at my desk. (I am a retired university administrator.) I received a frantic call from my neighbor who was so distraught it was hard to understand what she was telling me. But I gathered enough to know that I should immediately turn on the TV. What I saw was so ghastly that one could not believe it was real. I was watching when the 2nd plane struck the Twin Towers. And I saw the buildings come down. I was watching when the news came that a plane had also gone into the Pentagon which is only about 45 minuets from my home in the Maryland suburbs. I felt like that was my back yard. And I heard about the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. After the initial shock, my first reaction was to locate my daughter who works within walking distance of the White House--would they try to go after that target as well? How blessed I am that, unlike so many others, my daughter was safe and unharmed. I sat for almost 2 days straight glued to the TV--it was impossible to do anything else. I cried. I sat in shock and then I cried some more. It was especially hard when I heard the family members begging for news of their parents, spouses, children, siblings, fiances, best friends, co-workers. My mind kept telling me that it was unhealthy to sit so transfixed, that I needed to go out, to do something else. But it seemed impossible to not be a part. I tried to give blood, but was turned down for health reasons. I offered my services as a counselor, but did not have the proper Red Cross training. I prayed and wrote in my journal, and talked to my children, and thanked God that I still had them. About a week later I had to drive to Virginia to visit my daughter and my route took me right past the Pentagon. I was not prepared for my reaction. I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach and I burst into tears as I was driving past. I took an alternate route home, one that was much longer, because I just could not face the sight again. The cruelty, the dispassionate planning of so many deaths, the sudden and inexplicable annihialation of so many innocent people--people like my neighbors, my sisters, my children, my friends, my neices and nephews seemed more than anyone should be expected to bear. And yet I did believe that we would go on. We would survive. Yes, it's easy for me to be philosophical as I did not have my heart broken. I prayed for those whose lives had been devasted by loss and I still do. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I spend a lot of time trying to reconcile the Gospel message of forgiveness, of peace, with what our government is doing in the name of fighting terrorism. I worry a lot about what my response should be, what is the moral reaction that is called for? I have not altered my daily routine and I don't think about how my loved ones or I might be involved in an attack. This is not how I choose to live my life. I do admit to looking at planes when I hear them in the sky. Since I live fairly close to Andrews Air Force Base, I do hear many helicopters and I find myself wondering if something has happened and the young men and women are responding. I think we should remember the extraordinary bravery of the rescue workers, the spontaneous kindness of strangers to strangers. Someone from the New York-based Humane Society, thought about the little pets stranded in the apartments in the vicinity of the Trade Center and made some efforts to rescue them. People brought food to the rescue workers, both in New York and at the Pentagon. To me that's where God is--in the relationships that sprang up and sustained the wounded. No, I did not fly a flag because it seemed to me that it was an expression of some kind of jingoistic emotion that might become something which I do not believe the flag stands for. I had no urge to display the flag for that matter. When I am at any kind of event at which the "Star Spangled Banner" is sung and the flag is displayed, I always stand with my hand over my heart. But this was different. My love of my country and my grief for those suffering and so unjustly and grievously harmed is deeper than the flag could represent. I was at a seminar for my job, when attendees started to receive pages from their loved ones.I actually stayed throughtout the seminar because at first we didn't relize how serious this was. I went to work & was on break & I heard people talking about airplanes crashing to the twin tower, no the pentagon,no the twin tower, no in Pa. So I went out of the breakrooom & ask what was going on,a lady told me everything not knowing that my daughter is a flight attendent for Delta Airlines. I ask what airline was it? She didn't know. My daughter left for work early this morning. I called my son-n-law at work,I ask did you see the T.V.? He said yes. I ask where was Valerian? He said She was in Altanta. He talked to her she was O.K. The fear was really bad. I didn't get to talk to her until 12pm because the phone lines jamed. Our hearts go out to those who lost love ones. My son is a firefigther in Leland N.C. I don't miss a chance to know were my family is or to let them know that I love them. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My husband, adult daughter and I were staying at a cabin on the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota, and were looking forward to canoeing. It had been rainy the first few days that we were there. Finally the sun came out and my husband and daughter went down to the lodge to rent a canoe. When my husband said to the young man at the counter that it's a beautiful day, and the young man looked confused and said "yes, here it is.." and my husband and daughter then looked confused, the young man said "you don't know, do you?" and he proceeded to tell them what had happened a couple hours earlier. We did take out the canoe, and it was the strangest bittersweet feeling, to be out in that canoe, enjoying God's country, the peacefulness, the quiet, the only sounds being the water lapping on the side of the canoe. We felt so many feelings, guilt for feeling safe in this place, shock that this could happen, deep sorrow for the lives lost, but I think mostly we felt guilt, like who were we to be enjoying this when other's lives are totally shattered. We did have a CD player with a radio, so we listened to the radio accounts of what was happening, but it was not as riveting as sitting in front of our televisions would have been. Of this, I am thankful that we did not have a television. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. All of our lives have changed because of September 11, 2001. We cannot deny that. In every way, some good, some bad. As Americans, I believe that we are working hard to make something good of every aspect of the attacks. I have tried to embrace the positive aspects, the ways that we Americans have come together working for the common goal of Peace. But just recently, 11 months later, something on the news (about the poison gas tests on dogs) made me fill with such hate, such ugly feelings, such rage, I could not believe it was me feeling this way. I wanted to kill, just one terrorist, even if I would havce had to spend my life in prison, or die for it. Then I knew I had played into the terrorist's hands and become as ugly and hateful as the terrorists. I would never, could never do anything like that, but for a moment, all the hate, fear, ugliness in me reared it's head. Thank God he keeps my heart and mind in his hands and I can let go of the bad feelings. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I like most to remember the immediate victims, the firefighters, the policemen, EVERYONE who worked so long and hard to find people who had been in the towers and the Pentagon, and the people who were passengers on the hijacked airplanes, but especially the victims themselves, the people who worked in the Towers and the Pentagon. We must never forget them, just as we must never forget the soldiers who have died in wars, the Jews and everyone who died in the Holocaust. Yes, I bought a American flag with a holder from the American Legion, had my husband install it on the front of our house, and fly it proudly. I grew up knowing that my parents and grandparents would always fly the American flag on holidays like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, anytime that was appropriate to show our pride in our flag. I was getting up for school, when my mom said that the world trade centers are getting hit by air planes.So I ran to the tv and I watched the 2nd plane hit the tower! I seen people jumping out of the windows and children crying for there parents!all these people were running away crying covered in smoke. I actually started to cry!!! It was so sad to see all those people dieing when the world trade centers finally fell. I almost stayde home because of the attack but I ended up going to school. What I think would be most remembered is all the lives that were lost that day, and the heroes who tried to save those poor , poor people who were stuck in the world trade centers. I was in in Mr. Anderson's seventh grade social studies class at EJMS. When i walked into the room the T.V. was on. I read the bottom and it said that one of the trade centers had been hit by a plane. I thought big deal it's an accident. but later on it showed another plane hitting the second one. When this happened i knew i was wrong. I began to pray for all the people inside the building and their familes. When the towers fell i began to cry. Then it told us about the otherplane that crashed in a feild in pennslvina. All that block we watched the T.v. The next block my mom sent my big sister to get me. For the rest of the day my family and i stayed together cuddled up on the couch. Before this happened i really did noy show enough affection for this wonderfull country. now i'm very pateraded. Then I got up to go take a shower and get ready for school. Then when I was walking out the door I saw one start to fall. When I got to school every didnt really want to talk about it. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001 began the same way as any other day. I had just finished teaching my ninth grade English students and was preparing for second period. As the bell rang and my students left, two boys, Drew and Devin, rushed to my desk and asked me, "Mrs. Williams, have you heard what happened?" Knowing how my students like to distract me with high school dramas, I simply looked at them and said, "No." Their animation puzzled me and soon I realized that this was no ordinary "high school drama." "The World Trade Center in New York was just hit by a plane!" cried Devin. I was stunned. I immediately went to my computer to turn on the news portion and called my husband, a firefighter, who was home with our four month old daughter. He told me he had been watching the news and it was true -- two planes had flown into the World Trade Center towers. My head was spinning from the information and I knew that the short story was no longer important in my classroom. I immediately had my students quiet down and sit in their seats. I explained to them that whatever was going on was important and we were going to watch the television coverage. My students and I watched the screen silently. I think that we were all incredulous that something this terrible had happened. Then we watched the towers fall. Disbelief and sadness were apparent on everyone's faces. The rest of the day was a blur. I went home and sat with my husband and my daughter watching the images over and over again. I didn't sleep much that night. I just couldn't believe what had happened. It was a day that truly affected me and one that I will never forget. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Before September 11, 2001, I was very patriotic. As a teacher, I felt it was my duty to instill a sense of patriotism and respect for our country and those who serve her. After September 11th, my patriotism surged and I became an even bigger proponent for making my students aware of their responsibilities as citizens. Every year I take time to talk to my students about September 11th and its aftermath. I also make a special point to help them celebrate Veterans Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Flag Day. My life is now more focused on preserving our rights and freedoms as Americans and setting an example to all the young people I teach. I hope to instill that sense of patriotism and duty to my students, thereby making them better citizens. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think there should be a TIME (not a moment) of silence for all those who lost their lives on that horrible day. Prayers should be said and television programs should replay the images to remind the entire population of how vulnerable we really are. I also think that prior to showing the images, something needs to be said to the families as it must be difficult for them to watch the images again. September 11th should be a reverent day -- not a day off for workers or for sales. There should be a specific time during the way when everyone across the nation (including all television stations, even cable) pauses to reflect on the events and the loss that took place on September 11th. Yes, I flew an American flag after September 11th. I have always had one outside my house, but now I have two on my car. I also allot one day per week to dress in some patriotic gear to remind my students to be thankful for their rights and freedoms. My feelings about the flag have not changed -- they have only been strengthened. I think that every American should show their love for their country by flying a flag. I was still at school at that time, hearing about my classmates talking about how two planes hit two buildings. I didn't really understand what they were talking about until i got home and turn on the TV and saw the World Trade Center getting hit by another plane Live. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a sophomore in high school, and I was waiting for class to start. My friends and I were talking about what we did over the weekend, copying each other's chemistry, and stressing about the Algebra quiz. Somebody came into the room and said, "Somebody bombed the World Trade Center!" Some people were doubtful, like me. I thought that it was just a rumor. I wish that I was right. About 2 minutes later, an anouncement came on conferming the bombing of building 1 of the WTC. My chemistry class converged with the physics class, and we all gathered around a TV. CNN explained to us all that it was in fact an airplane that crashed into the WTC. Later on, in my 2nd period class, the radio told us about the 2nd building falling to the ground. And finally, we heard of the Pentagon's tragedy. The entire school was in panic. Questions filled the building. Who did it? Would we be going to war? And most importantly, Why did something like this happen to us? Now, a year later, I know who it was. I know that we didn't go to war. But I still don't understand why. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I would like to say yes to this question, but that would be deceitful. No, my life has not been changed, but it has, however, been affected. I live in Texas, and I don't know of any one that died in the tragedy of 9/11. I still wake up every day, go to school, hang out with my friends on the weekends, and watch Gillmore Girls religiously. I still go to church every week and Colorado every summer. So no, my life has not changed. But that doesn't mean that I was deeply affected by the events. When I got home from school and watched CNN, I cried. To this day, when I remember what happened, I become sad. I feel extremely sorry for all of the families of the fire fighters and the victims. But my life is, to some extent, uneffected. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? In a word, everything. Especially all of the lives lost and all of the heros gained. All of the stories, the confusion, the astonishment. This event will never, ever be forgotten. Not one part of it. It is documented for every channel. People will tell their grandchildren about it. It will be taught about in history classes 100 years from now. Every aspect of it- who, when, why, where, how. And that's the way it ought to be. My family has always flown an American flag on holidays such as the 4th of July, Veteran's Day, etc. After September 11, it now flies proud outside of our house every day. Before the events of September 11, I looked at the flag and saw Union soldiers battling for unity and America fighting for freedom back in the 1800s. Now I look at it, and I see that the American symbol doesn't just stand for the old wars fought. It stands for what we are now- One nation, under God, with liberty. And we will have justice for all. Just starting a vacation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, my husband and I had just got up to get ready for our first full day there. As I went into the kitchen to get some tea I stopped and turned on the television for some local news and weather. I began to pour the tea when I turned around to look at the television to see what exactly they were reporting. I called my husband and just pointed and said, "Look at this"! He could tell by the look on my face something was wrong. We both sat down and watched the horrible sites at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. We called our family back in Las Vegas to make sure they were all safe and to report we were fine. It was a very insecure feeling to be so far away from home at this moment in time. Being we had not taken a vacation in ten years we decided to take it day by day and to remain there. The homes and cars in Albuquerque began to display American Flags in every size. Groups started collecting money for the victims. We were able to keep abreast of all the news on television and local radio. As much as we looked forward to this trip I can say we were very happy to come home. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I had quit my job before Sept. 11th and my husband worked another nine months and quit his. We decided that although we are both several years from retirement that we would stop working and enjoy our life more. This was not the plan we had originally but we feel it has added quality to our lives. In a couple of years we are planning a trip through the U.S. by either car or camper. We look forward to meeting many patriotic Americans just like the ones we saw during the days and months following Sept. 11th. We should remember those left behind to carry on their lives. We should remember those who lost their jobs. Most of all, we should remember how precious Life is. While I was walking into the door for Art class the television was on. I was thinking that we were just watching some television to get ideas for us to draw, but then I saw it. I saw the airplane hit the World Trade Center. I was shocked. I didn't know if this was a movie or real. My teacher was very sad about this event. I was also very sad. I didn't think about school about the whole day. I was wondering what will go on now. Then all of the sudden the TV had a break news story, a plane has hit the Pentagon in Washington DC. A little later no would now that more was to come, a plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. September 11 has changed me. I felt like I needed to do something to help this country recover, help the United States become "the land of the free and the home of the brave" one more time. I am also taking pilots lessons and this event makes me want to complete the lessons and fly commercially some day. I will defend the lives of the people on my plane before I defend mine. The day seemed like all of the US citizens became one and hoped for the best. We should remember all of the heroes that came from that day, all of the people who helped when they didn't need to. I haven't flown the flag any more than normal but I probably should have. I think that the flag shows a feeling of pride, respect, and peace, The flag to me is very important, it makes me feel special about where I live, where I was born. J. and my partners name is Craig, we were getting up and getting ready for work, and we had on Channel 5, our local news station and as we looked at the TV we saw the first tower on fire and in shock saw the second plane hit the second tower we were frozen in place and couldnt believe what was taking place before our eyes!!!! I got to work and we put on the tv and watch the events unfold. The heroism of everyone involved was incredible, I wished I could have been there to help in any way I could, but that was not possible so I prayed for all those wonderful people and there families, and that day placed an American Flag on my car and havent taken it down, not for one minute since that day!!!!!!!!!! Then she turned on the television and we sat there and saw the second plane hit the other tower.We sat there in fear for the rest of the day.I thought that it was a bad movie.But then I figured out every thing that was going on. I wish that it was a bad dream that didn't and wouldn't come true. But that was reality,and it was really scary.My mom had always told me that there were bad people in the world.I'd never imagine that they were that bad. My mom works for the FAA which is right beside the Hartsfield Airport.I was so scared that some thing happened to her. my life would never be the same without her. I woke up the morning of September 11th (in San Diego, California), and as usual I was late for school. I hopped in the car and was listening to my CD. Little did I know that there was breaking news occurring at that very instant. I arrived to school and my friends say to me "I can't belive a plane crashed into the World Trade Center!" I said to them "what happened??". Well, the bell rang and I headed off to first period....World History. I walked into the classroom and the news was on. I saw the horrible footage of the planes smashing into the buildings, and about a billion thoughts ran through my head. My teacher said, "Take out a piece of paper and write what you are thinking right now"....this is what I wrote: "Right now I am in World History class and we are watching the news on Channel 7. Today, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked by terrorists. I am not sure how many planes crashed into the buildings, but I do know that an American Airlines plane (I think Boeing 767) crashed into the World Trade Center. The plane was coming from Boston. They do now know if there were any people on the plane, but I cannot even imagine what was going on in those people's heads if they were on the airplane. Shortly after the plane(s) crashed into the World Trade Center, it collapsed. This attack happened at around 6:00 am in New York. They do not know how many people are killed/injured. They just stated on the news that typically there are 10,000 people in the towers. Right now I am very scared at what migh happen next. This reminds me alot of Pearl Harbor and I am afraid that this mite turn into full-on war." -Written on September 11, 2001 at 8:07 AM I am so glad I have this account that I wrote. That whole day that is all I could think about. I went home and watched the news the whole night...I could not believe my eyes. Before 9-11 I never really took the time to realize what the Pledge of Allegiance was saying. I just stood up every morning and said it. I also gained a deeper respect for firefighters.
