He was on his way home to have dinner with his wife and his plane went in to one of the buildings. Also my mom had another friend that had a mom that worked in one of the buildings but i am not sure which one it was, but she did not go in to work that day because she had a bad feeling that something bad was going to happen. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001 started like any normal day. I was teaching science to a 6th grade class in Piqua, Ohio, when one of my co-workers quietly slipped into my classroom. She whispered into my ear that the World Trade Center had been struck by two planes, and it was thought to be the work of terrorists. I was stunned. I didn't know what to think. I wrapped up the class I was teaching and sent them on their way, as it was time to switch classes. I flipped on the TV, and there it was on the news. My next class came in, and they knew what was going on. We just watched TV all morning. We were glued. The kids were so silent. I knew that they really didn't understand the magnitude of what they were seeing. They were asking me questions about terrorists -- they didn't understand why anyone would do this. One student wanted to know how the terrorists got out of the plane before it hit the building. When I explained suicide bombing, the kids were shocked. When the buildings collapsed, I wanted to cry, but I didn't want to do it in front of my students. I felt that I needed to be a strong leader for them. I didn't want them to be too scared. I cried later that night and many other times after that. The visuals that struck me the most were the pictures of people jumping from the World Trade Center. I wondered to myself, how bad was the situation inside that the best choice was to plummet to your death? I also wondered, what did the people trapped on the upper floors of the buildings say to their loved ones when they made phone calls? What do you say to your family when you know you're about to die? Thinking about the people of this tragedy makes my heart ache. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Since September 11, I value my family more. I take time to enjoy every single day. I know that it could have easily been any one of us trapped in those towers or in the Pentagon or on a plane. I had to go out and buy one, and I was ashamed of the fact that we did not own a flag. My feelings have changed about the flag. I always felt proud of our flag, but I think we need to show that we are proud of our country and all it stands for by by flying the flag on a regular basis. We say the pledge at school every day, and I get choked up sometimes when I think about the what we're saying and what the flag stands for. My sister turned the radio to K-Earth 101 Oldies Station. As I was deciding what to wear that day I heard about the First World Trade Center being hit. I wasn't really listening at first, but then I heard something about a plane hitting the building. I thought it was a joke at first, but after a second I realized it wasn't. I called my mom and my sister to the room and when they heard it we started to freak out. We turned on the news while we were finishing getting ready and what we saw was so... devastating. I never thought ANYTHING like this would happen to us, the (so-called) most powerful country in the world. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? My life hasn't changed much in the day-to-day sense because I didn't lose anybody that I knew or loved, but it has changed in the sense that I don't always feel secure, that I actually have to worry about war happening. I have younger brothers and I don't want them to have to fight in a war. I have family that would get drafted; it's too sad to think about. I think all the people who died should be remembered, all the people who died trying to save the people stuck in the buildings. We should remember the stupid people who did this to us- and never let them forget. We lost a lot of lives that day, a lot of people who, while there weren't important in a big sense, were still important to others. My mom flew a flag on her car after the events and I lit a candle (I still have it). My feelings never really changed about the flag. It made me kind of sad to think that it took a national tragedy to bring this country together, to make it more patriotic. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I woke up for school on September 11th to my alarm radio set to my favorite station. The two hosts were talking in their usual way, and I rolled out of bed and went to the shower, leaving the radio on. Upon getting out of the shower, I first heard the news. The two radio hosts were saying how the "one of the towers has been hit by a plane." It is almost embarrassing for me now to admit that I was oblivious to what the twin towers were. I turned off the radio without a second thought, passing it off as news about a freak accident. From their I headed to the kitchen were I saw my mom and older sister staring at the television more intently than is usual for my family. They asked me if I knew what had happened, and I looked up at the screen, only to realize that this was more immense than I ever could have imagined. I watched as the building started to crumble. With all three house TV's tuned to different channels, we heard it over and over. Both towers had been hit and were collapsing with everyone still inside. Yet, the sheer atrocity of the event did not sink in until that morning at school. Teachers used class time for discussion, and lunch was spent debating over why it had happened. My life has only changed slightly since September 11. Before, I did not watch television very often. Now, I try to watch the news whenever I get the chance. Also, my sister who lives in Manhattan, now and during the attacks, is on my mind much more frequently than she used to be. I make the effort to call her and e-mail her whenever I can. The last thing is not a change in my actions, but in the way I think. Many times I will be standing outside and a plane will fly over. The first thing that comes to my mind is, "this could be the last day of your life, are you ready?" In some ways, it makes me both sad and scared that I may not live to do everything I want to. But on the other hand, it motivates me to be ambitious now, because anything could happen. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? There are many things that I believe should be remembered about September 11. First of all, I believe future school education should inform students not only of what happened, but why it happened. Terrorism is a very strong and evil force, and it should never be associated with any religion. I also feel that everyone should remember how everyone was impacted in some way. Though my feelings have not changed towards the symbolism of the flag, when I see it I am always reminded of what happened. I woke up early in the morning for school on September 11 last year just as usual, but when i turned on my t.v. I witnessed history. For the first time since Pearl Harbor our country had been attacked. This was a complete shock for our country and it effected the lives of everyone in the U.S. and throughout the world. When I think of September 11, I think a couple few things should be remembered. First of all, I think we should remember how vulnerable we can be. When we were at school all the teachers had there telivison on and no one was happy we didn't have work to do but were just staring at the tv whatchin things unfold. For some people it was a time to call family members and friends and make sure they were ok and tell them that they were ok. Other people called to see any way that they could help. For me this was a huge wake up call. In a matter of about 5 minutes 3000 people lost there lives. Just like that. It was a shock. There I was 14 years old and I'm watching the twin towers being destroyed. Then they were gone. It made me realize something. We never know when were going to die. It could be 2 minutes or it could be 20 years. I know most kids think like me, that we have all the time in the world and can do this and that later on in life. But you don't know when you won't be able to do that. You never know what or when anything is going to happen. You have to live everyday as if it were your last, because one day, it will be. I didn't know anything about the attacks at that time. Then when I was in my 4th period class around 10:20 A.M. I was in my engineering tech class when one of the administrators walked into the room and whispered something to my teacher. I overheard him saying that a plane crashed into the world trade center. My mind told me that it must have been an accident .... But I knew it was not at the same time. The principal spoke on the loudspeaker of a plane hitting one of the World Trade Centers. He told us that was all the information had at the moment and that we were not allowed to turn on the TV's in the class room. At about 1:00 P.M. I walked into my woodshop class and the TV was on. I haven't gone on any planes since the attack though. But it affected a person who lived close by to me and their whole family. A family that lived by me had a husband that worked by the World Trade Center. After the attack his wife and two young kids didn't hear from the husband for 2 days. He came back on September 14th and said he saw the towers fall down and the second plane hit the building. Luckily he survived, but like many others he was their to whiteness it all. I think we should all remember how instead of tearing our country apart... The attacks made us stronger and brought us closer together. In July of 2001 I graduated from Carson- Newman College, a small baptist college outside of Knoxville, TN. For my graduation, my mother and I decided to take a cross country trip to California, driving. We left on the morning of August 24, 2001 and spent a little less than a week driving out to California. While there we spent time visiting my Mom's brother and his family. A little over 2 weeks from the start of our trip it was time to start back home. Our last big stop was going to be a night in Las Vegas, this night was September 10, 2001. We had not made any previous reservations, thinking we would just decide when we got there. As soon as we pulled onto the strip we knew the place we wanted to stay would be New York, New York. So, we got a room on the 17th floor and headed out for a night of fun in Vegas. Little did we know, this would be our last night of fun, with no worries, on this trip. The next morning we got up around 6 am. I was in the shower when my Mother came into the bathroom and began reporting the events that she was seeing on the news. I quickly finished in the shower and went to the TV to see the footage for myself, I can't remember the footage that was being shown at that exact moment. I was more distracted by the artwork that decorated our room. There were 2 beautiful pictures of the New York City skyline. Then I walked to the window and realized the airport was at a complete standstill. We had a perfect view of the runways at the airport and planes were just sitting on the runway. I never realized how creepy silence could be until that moment. We decided to go ahead and check out of the hotel. When we got down to the lobby, slot machines were empty, card tables had no one around them, but the TV's were surrounded by what seemed like hundreds of people, straining to hear what reporters were saying. All I could think was that I wanted to be home. As we got in the car and began our thousand mile journey home, we discovered that Hoover Dam was closed. On September 10th, Hoover Dam and The Grand Canyon were 2 important stops. On September 11th, the only important stop was home. We were some of the drivers experiencing the gas gouging, but for us the prices weren't a problem, we didn't care what the price was to get us home. In January of 2002 I volunteered for the Salvation Army and went to New York City for a week. I helped with food service at Ground Zero working the 11pm to 7am shift. The first time I walked into the Ground Zero tent I was struck by the massiveness of everything. Seeing it on TV took away how large everything was. I had never been to New York, so I didn't have a mental image of what used to be there. But thanks to the wonderful firemen and police officers, I began to see through their words what the area, now called Ground Zero, used to be. They shared with me the spirit of the City and told me the stories of that day for them. I didn't talk, I let them, it seemed cathartic for them, so I listened. I still remember their stories and their names. I pray for them daily, as well as for their families. I don't know if any of them ever read any of these, but if you do and you worked Ground Zero from 11pm to 7am during January, I probably picked up your plates when you were done eating, or poured you coffee, and now I just want you to know you are in my daily prayers. I remember waking up that morning like any other day for school. I went to my parent s room and my mom was watching the news and she was in disbelief. When i started watching it the first plane had already hit. I really couldnt believe it myself, even though i really didnt know what was going on. My mom said it was a terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. I had to get ready for school so didnt see much of the rest. But when i went to my friends house to go to school, her mom and her didnt know anything about it. So we all turned on the tv and they also couldnt believe what had just happen. At school i guess it was just a normal day, but in a few classes we did watcht the news and also talked about it. The days after at school we had a few things deidicated to September 11th. I was holding my two week old son, rocking him to sleep when I heard the news. I turned on the TV right away and watched as the Towers burned. As I was watching a report came in about the Pentagon being hit as well. I looked down at my son, so innocent with his little hand wrapped around my index finger, and thought to myself "What kind of world have I brought him into?". We took my son to see his Grandparents for the first time. We sat watching the news, when my son's Grandfather told us that he was supposed to be there, where the plane hit the Pentagon that day. The news was on and oddly I never leave it on that channel. I saw a huge building that looked like it was on fire and then all of a sudden they showed a plane crashing into another building, Live. I saw the second plane hit the tower live. I couldn't believe what was happening. I then had to leave for school. I arrived at college where there was like a dead silence throughout. I was doing my daily routine like i always did. I was sitting in 2nd hour, Civics class, and we were having work time when suddenly the principle came in and called Mr. Lavelle out of the room. He was gone for a few minutes, and when he came back in he explained the situation to us and turned on the T.V. so we could watch the news and hear the full story. I really didn't understand what had happened or even how seriouse the situation was, so to tell you the truth I really wasn't shocked at all. It was just really wierd. My life has changed a lot because I value my life much more, and it made me realize how easily it could be lost. Life is also different because a lot of my friends lost people they knew or even people that were really close to them. I think the thing that should be remembered about september 11th is not a building or the number of people that lost their lives or even a family or friend if you lost one; it is the simple lesson that we must go on with our way of life or those terrorists really did win. We have to beat them the only way possible which is to prove to them that their efforts were useles and that we will always be stronger than they are. Unfortunately, I didn't fly the american flag on september 11th because I didn't have one but I would have if I could have. My feelings about the american flag have changed a lot since that day for a couple of reasons. For one, the American flag really means something to me now, and I really understand the meaning of it. I understand what the makers of that flag felt, and I understand why they made it. I also realize why it important to honor the flag and why we should always fly it with pride. I just thought it was a movie, when really it was a very important thing, to all the adults and the United States. I was just going to school like it was any other day, when you could just see people crying in there cars. I was so confused. I work at night in Washington, D.C. and get home around 6 a.m., so I was asleep when the first plane hit. I remember I kept having dreams about people coming to my house, all trying to tell me something. The phone was ringing like crazy, but I ignored it because it was only 9 a.m. and everyone who knows me knows I am asleep. Finally, I had a dream where my husband handed me a cell phone and I said "I guess I need to get a cell phone, right?" That's when I woke up and decided I had better answer the phone because my dream was trying to tell me something important. I picked it up but got a busy signal. Upon looking at the caller ID, I saw it was my husband so I knew it had to be something important for him to call me so early. I tried to call him back but could not get through. I keep the TV on while I'm asleep and could hear it in the background, but was not really paying attention. I was more concerned with getting in touch with my husband. Finally, I turned around and saw the first plane hit the tower. I was stunned!!!! At first I thought it was just an accident, a horrible accident. My first thought was how would all the people get rescued from the building and that we would be watching this all day on TV. That's when I saw the second plane hit and realized that this was no accident at all. WE WERE BEING ATTACKED!!!!!!! That's when the phone rang again and my husband's first words were "Wake UP!!!" I told him I was awake and would be for the rest of the day. To see that second plane hit was surreal. Then, as I started flipping through the channels, I heard about the Pentagon being hit also. I sat on my bed for more than an hour just stunned!!!! My husband left his job as soon as he heard the Pentagon was also attacked and was home by 10:30, while most people were still stuck on 395 or walking home. As shocking as it was to see all the news coverage of the planes being hit, I was really unprepared when the first tower fell. It was as if the day couldn't get any worse, yet it kept getting worse and worse as the day wore on. We both just sat there staring at the TV, trying to see if I knew anyone who worked at the Pentagon or who had a loved one there and wondering whether we should get our kids out of school. Well, that didn't take long and they were home by 12:30. I remember trying to explain to my 8 year-old the events of that day and why it was happending and not being able to totally comprehend it myself. Relatives and friends from all over started calling to check on us and we could hear military aircraft flying over our house. We are in Andrews AFB's flight path and normally hear them overhead at least once a day, but that day it was different because they were flying so fast and flying all day. I sat stunned for 3 days watching all of the coverage and not going to work because there was a state of emergency in the city and my job was not important enough to risk going into the city. My route to work takes gives me a spectacular view of the capital as I cross over a bridge and as I went to work that Friday, all I could think about was the people who had to drive past the Pentagon every day and see the destruction. I took our video camera and drove past the Pentagon about a week later to take a video of the destruction. Strange as it sounds, I had to have this engraved on my brain so that I could NEVER forget the feelings of that day. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed because I am much more aware of world events than I used to be. My husband was in the Air Force and would always tell me I needed to be more aware of current events. It was on September 11 that I realized how true that was. I also realized what real fear was that day. Not fear of success or failure or any host of things we fear, but real fear of the people on the planes and in the buildings. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The human spirit that was so apparent that day and in the days afterwards. From the firefighters and police who gave their lives doing their jobs, to the people on the side of the roads who held signs and cheered the rescue workers. But especially the workers trapped in the towers who jumped to their deaths and the passengers of Flight 93 who saved countless others on the ground from more death and destruction.
