I was in Budapest Hungary, and received a phone call from my older brother [Austin] at about 5 in the afternoon. The call didn't concern me, but I was interested in the response my dad was giving to Austin's conversation. My dad was saying, "get outta here....Austin quit playing around...You're saying that america has been attacked?....and this isn't some movie you just watched?...alright alright I'll turn on the news......now? alright, hold on.." I ran down the stairs to see the news, and I laughed, because I thought that Austin was just joking around. My dad was silent, everyone seemed to be able to interpret the meaning of what was going on but me. Heading to school the next morning, I kept questioning what had just occured. At school it was the only talk, but there was no fear of anything. The Hungarians were very solemn the next day, and it felt like a wave of depression has swept over the area. There was a notice given to my school ICSB [International School of Budapest], "All American schools are to take extra precautions." Our school quickly equipped a new security system which each student had to punch in before entering the building. I frequently travel from continent to continent, and the security has been extremely "up tight." Everyone is taking their greatest precautions. I have even been placed in a different plane, because an american would not ride on a plane with a middle eastern person. Life has changed drastically, America now lives in fear. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was actually sleeping and a friend called us and told us a plane hit the WTC. We turned on the TV right away and saw what truly looked like a scene from a movie. I just sat there glued to the TV with my mouth wide open at first and then after the news sunk in, I just couldn't help but cry. My fiancee is a pilot for an airline and I am a airline employee as well, As we found out that the airplanes were commercial airlines my thoughts went immediately for those on board and the crew members, and what they must have been going though. I was so devistated. I am also very grateful because as horrible as it was that day, my dad was not in the WTC. He went there for business once a month for the past 5 years. He was supposed to meet a friend on Sept 10 for lunch but he did not go, she died the next day in the World Trade Center. My dad had alot of friends that worked in the Twin Towers, some made it out ok but others unfortunetly did not. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? My life has changed dramatically after the attacks, I am more grateful for the "little things" in life, I am always telling my loved ones that I love them every time I talk to them. My job has changed very much. Being in the airline business, I went to work one day and the next day it was a totaly different job. I am extremely cautious of everything in the airport, whether it is a person acting suspicious or bags being left unattended, or other passengers reactions to people of middle eastern decent. Security has been tighter at the airports as well which is different. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the things that should be remembered about September 11th is all those heroes that day who went above and beyond and gave up their lives for others. All those people who unexpectedly lost their lives that day. Those people who lived through the unimaginable and the unthinkable. Those people who knew about the attacks took over that last airplane and stopped the terrorists. The way all of America grieved and healed all together and helped others whether they knew them or not. And the way that America moved on and was not going to let anyone slow America down. I miss seeing the WTC among the NYC Skyline whenever I visit the city I always catch myself looking for the WTC and find myself sad when I dont see them. I still have an American flag on my car and have had it on since September 11th. My feelings have gotten stronger about the American flag. I witness history on September 11th when i was in 8th grade when i was at Glen Este Midlle School. i was in Mrs. Aiken's class when we heard something happend in New York City and in D.C. But later on in the day we were watching Channel One News they were showing that 2 planes crashed into the World Trade Centers and 1 in the Pentigon. It was really sad to hear that all them people in the World Trade Center died. Me and my friends were very unsure of what was happening at the moment. A horrible feeling came over me as I realized that hundreds or thousands of human beings were facing their last moments in this life here on earth and they just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time..The kindness of others and willingness to help one another under such circumstances was eye opening...It was also shocking to me that the conditions of Afganastan were so incredibly horrible. As I had been involved in raising my 4 children and also working the small drapery and decorating business that my husband and I own, I guess, I had not been up on current events....I did know that other nations did not like Americans, however not to such an extent. At that particular time, we (my husband and I), had a small retail store ... selling fabric, window treatments, and gifts. I had felt discouraged that America did not really support the mom and pop small businesses very much and in fact felt that eventually, Americans would soon be left with 2 banks and Wal Mart..but, after 9/11, I realized what a wonderful country we live in dispite it's faults and soon I realized that I am privilaged to be an American! The reality of the fact there are individuals in this country who wish to harm our citizens and our country has been a bit shocking. The necessity for "Homeland Security" is paramount and I am grateful that our government is aware of that. Life will never be the same as it was before 9/11. The historical element of 9/11 should be remembered totally and taught to generations to come...this was a huge deal and our strength as a country, A truely United Nation, should always be appreciated...And the fact that innocent individuals lost their lives should always be remembered as well. I tried to fly a flag after the events of 9/11, however they were very hard to come by...I had customers coming into our little store shopping for them and as they were hard to find, I designed a flag called "America's New Hope"and wrote a poem about the construction of the flag. It can be viewed at www.americasnewhope.com It is a commemmorative piece about our "unity after tradgedy". Yes, I fly both an American Flag and an "America's New Hope" flag every day..They are very complimentary of one another...I submitted a design idea to Lower Manhattan Development Corporation that was a take off of my flag design...as a suggestion for the rebuilding of ground zero. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was second period; chorus class. We had just finished singing and were getting ready to dismiss. Then came a voice of trepidition and remorse over the PA system. Our principal, next uttered the words that have altered our position in history. We had been attacked. My teahcer Ms. Hermann uttered something to the effect of "oh my." As the targets of the attacks were red I notice people around me crying. THEY had parents at ground zero and the pentagon. THEY felt the loss of the nation tenfold. I walked over to my good friend Buddy Swick adn we sat in silence. We tried to make jokes, but something, even though we didn't realize the extent of our nations injuries, was eating away at our souls. The bell rang and I took the most direct route to my 3rd paeriod class. On the way I passed the Central office, passed many friends of mine crying and anxious to use the phone. In history class, it seemed trifling to talk about about the events of the past, when the tradgedies of the present were strangling our hearts. Our teacher Ms. Conrad refused to be drawn out, saying that she wasn't allowed to talk about it. Class passed restlessly, as teacher and stuident tried to come to terms with this event. The lunch bell rang, but I wasn't hungry and didn't want to see the crying faces of my friends, so i retreated instead to the safety of the library. Inside people were listing to a radio, commenting on thte tragedies. I didn't wnt to be drawn into the conversation, so I instead stood near the outskirts of the group. I recieved much information from the radio but it really did not hit me until I turned on the tv for the first time. I saw the destruction first hand. The wounds of the nation became the wounds of my soul. Even as the commentators continued, i had stopped listening, my mind leaving my body; traveling to ground Zero to give courage to those fighting to survive, to the survivors of those people on those destined planes to stay steadfast in the face of terrorism. It was on every channel. It was in every heart. It is forever eteched on the souls of all Americans, and is something I can never froget. 9/11 is no llon ger just a date in history. Suddenly a teacher from down the hall burst into our classroom around 8:50 a.m. yelling , telling us to turn on the news. Mrs. Care, my history teacher, did as he said and turned on channel 8, WGAL. What we saw was hard to fathom. It hit us like an anvil, unexpectantly. What was happening, who could steal our security like this, who had the right? All I could do was sit there and watch, helpless to the many people who were parishing as I sat idol in the classroom. I immediately knew womething was wrong, and seeing as the TV was on, I turned my attention to the news. the newsreporter, in a melancholy tone, reported that one of the towers of the world trade center had bee hit. My heart immediately felt as if it had been hit with a sledgehammer. the first thing that came to mind: who did it? When the reporters mentione that it was possibly Osama Bin Laden, the leader of a terrorist organization, I was skeptical becuae at first everyone though it was terrorist behind the Oklahoma City Bombing. So I thought, this is how poeple show their love and devotion and appreciation for their country, by causing an event so horrific that all we can do is sit and wonder why. I thought we may be the land of the free, but we are certainly not the home of the brave, because demolishing the twin towers with planes is definately a cowardly act. I have not been directly affected by September 11th besides the hurt in my heart and the ache in my soul. I still cannot believe that someone could find it in their hearts to kill all those innocent people for revenge. The United States has done some pretty messed up things to other countries in the past, but attacking the US doesn't slolve the problems; it only amkes them worse. Becuase now innocent people in Afghanistan are going to die and everyone of Middle Eastern decent has become a suspect. With all the nuclear weapons and manpower we have in the United States, there is no telling how far we will go since we have a "motive". I think September 11th was whoever did it's way of showing America that no matter how almighty we think we are, there is always something that can strike us down. But instead of making us Americans stop and say, man now we se how it feels to be the target; It's only given us an excuse to use more violence. I would say the one thing that I will always remember about September 11th is the way we came together to help. it's unfortunate that only by tragedy cna we come together and help one another. So in a twisted way, September 11th was a lesson to us all: 1. no matter how rich we are we are not invincible and 2. no matter how bad the tragedy we are indivicible. No I did not fly the flag after September 11th because since I'm not a patriotic person, I do not own one. In have mixed feelings toward the flag. On one hand, I resent it because I think about how many times that flag was waved in triumph as innocent victims lay dying in our greedy need to be the best. But on the other hand I appreciate those 13 stripes and 50 stars because, like our nation, they come together to form something truly unique that is unlike anything else in the world. I got something on my e-mail news alert that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in NYC. To tell you the truth, I wasn't even sure what the World Trade Center was. I thought maybe a small plane had hit. Then one of my co-worker's wife called him and told him it was all over the news. All of a sudden I was getting one news alert after the other, about NYC, the Pentagon, etc. I started to get really frightened. I thought America was suddenly being attacked without warning. I called my husband, who works at the same company as I do, and I was getting panicky. I wanted to go home and get our daughter out of school, but he convinced me that we needed to stay put. We went home for lunch as we always do and I turned on the news. Seeing those planes hit those huge buildings and seeing the towers fall filled me with horror. For days afterward, I felt intense grief and sadness. One evening at dinner, about a week after it happened, I just broke down and started sobbing, I felt so sad. I don't even know anyone in New York and have never been there, but I'm sure everyone else in the country who is NOT a New Yorker felt the same as I did. A certain innocence and bravado that all Americans had was taken away forever. Now I think, if it could happen in New York or Washington D.C., it could happen in Dallas, San Francisco, anywhere... My house is right in a flight-path for DFW Airport and I find myself looking up at them, trying to determine if they are okay. I'd rather drive than fly now. I remember driving on my way to my Tuesday morning Anthropology class and hearing announced on the radio that one of the towers had been hit. The irony for me is that the class I was on my way to was "Death, Burial, and Culture." When I arrived everyone in the building was huddled around a small television watching coverage. Our professor cancelled our class so we all could go out and support one another while watching the coverage. I remember the shock I felt watching the second plane hit, and still have trouble watching that image without getting sick to my stomach. I have been up in the WTC Observation area and could only imagine the fear felt by people being trapped so high up. Truly a life-changing moment for me. I heard about it around 5:30 - 6 am my time. Our teachers had the news on when we got inside of the classrooms, and they kept us uodated on what was happening. The whole school was touched by the attacks. That's what I saw. Acouple days later my friend found out that one of his relatives died in the pentagon. I was at work, answering the phone; telling customers how to repair their computers - heard reports from fellow workers that a plane had hit the first tower. At my first break I went to the lobby and witnessed the first tower collapsing and thousands of people losing their lives right in FRONT of me. I was in tears, but couldn't let anybody know it as I am a man and we are not to cry. I have never liked the media showing anybody being killed on TV....not to mention thousands during a 10 second period. I called my beautiful wife and tried to talk to her; she was in tears and could not speak .... all she could mumble is "...we're at war.." and hung up. I feared I would no longer see her again (she is my high-school sweetie) as I heard of other planes smacking into other buildings and I thought we WERE at war. I was flying that morning on a 757 from DFW to BOS and was in the cockpit while we were over Cleveland when we got word that UA 93 had been hijacked and we could hear the transmittance over the radio. Our aircraft had to take some evasive maneuvers to stay out of its way and the last time we saw the United aircraft it was heading south. At the same time we were diverted to Canton/Akron, Ohio. We spent 3 days in a hotel in Canton. We felt very lucky to be in a place that felt so small and safe. We later ferried the a/c to EWR and saw the smoldering remains of the WTC from the air. Words cannot describe our feelings during that time. After 2 days in Newark, the Capt., F.O. and I were able to rent a car and drive home to Texas. September 10th...I broke up with my Arabian girlfriend from being with her for 2 years...she resides in Dearborn heights, Mi. We had met while I was visiting for a potenical job offer and hit it off at a bar close to where i was staying and where she lived. We carried on a long distance relationship while we both attended College. However with the restrictions of us seeing eachother, I had to break it off because I needed more affection during that period of school and life. On September 10th I had called her and yes broke up over the phone and in an email. The next mourning my roommate woke me up and said "Chris" you got to come see this...we sat and watched the fire burning from the first tower then watched together the second plane slamming into the next tower...after a couple hours then days even the worst scenario didnt bother "it seemed my x girl friend" as she tried rather then talking about this horrible event, she tried getting us back together...I cant stop to ponder that on 9/11 i dreamt that my girl friends father did 911 because of me breaking up with his daughter. I was in my office when an office mate came in and said a plane has hit the World Trade Center. We have televisions in our library classroom and in our building hallway. I went in to see the newscast. As I was watching, the second plane hit. I had just a terrible sinking feeling. I turned to look around. The library, usually bustling with young adults was quiet. Some had moved to the televisions. Many were not talking, studying, or reading. They were sitting. Just sitting. I believe that we all share a common past, that we are all part of the universe's life force. We are the family of man. Witnessing such a massive loss of life sends repercussions through our souls. September 11th should be remembered as the day America dusted herself off, turned and looked at the world, and said "We may not be perfect, but, we're the best of what people can be and now we're going to prove it." The World Trade Center should not be rebuilt. The land should become a flat, open, grassy park with a single pillar as tall as the tallest tower. I turned on the shower radio, and they said that planes were flying into the world trade center. Startled, I ran into the living room where my dad already had the t.v. turned to the news. I was shocked! This plane exploded into the tower. Forgetting about getting ready for school, I kept watching. The second plane I saw right when it happened, not a replay like the first. I was going to go out to lunch with my mother because 9/11 is my birthday. I was watching the "Today Show" when the switched over to the Twin Towers when the first tower was already hit. While watching the first tower, the second plane was hit the south tower. I told my mother to switched to the news to watch it because we were expecting my step father in from Germany that day. We were worried because we didn't hear from him until that night. He got as far as Greenland before the plane was turned around back to Germany. My mother and I watched the news for the rest of the day for complete coverage of the various events unfolding. That day I was getting messages from friends from other states because they heard that a plane went down in Pennsylvania. They weren't sure how close the plane was to me but it was on the opposite side of the state. It was nerve racking being in Philadelphia because of the location of New York City and Washington DC. I think we should remember all those fire fighters and police who gave thier lives in trying to save those people in the towers. Also, the people who died in the towers and hope they never die in vain. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? At my house we flew a flag before 9/11 and still do. I bought a flag pin and have worn it everyday since on my collar.
