No one had said anything in my first period, but once I got to my second period, my teacher was so confused. She was talking to herself the whole time. The school told her not to say anything because they wanted our parents to tell us themselves. Once I got home, I turned on the TV and on every single channel was fog. I was really confused. I had no idea. I thought we had some kind of rocket ship crash. The more I listened, the more it made sense to me. We had an attack. I saw the playback and I thought it was some kind of joke, but it wasn't. Apparently it was true. It seemed like something that only a movie would have. It was real! When my parents walked in, they asked me if I heard. I said that I didn't believe it and they told me that it was true. I felt really weird and wondered why someone would do such a thing. Now everythings better. We still need to find Osma Bin Laden, but we'll find him soon enough. Then the whole country will be happy. Another teacher came in and told our class what happened. We turned on the tv and watched in awe. None of us could really believe what was going on. As we watched, we talked about Osama Bin Laden and why we thought he did this. Right before the end of class, we witnessed the towers falling. That is really when it hit me that thousands of people died right in front of our eyes, and how we saw history being made. It was a very scary feeling. I was working a 90 temporary position at a small Lake Charles, LA Chemical Plant and while taking a short break outside the plant manager passed on a golf cart and made a remark to me about looking out for low flying planes. I just casually smiled and laughed because he hd always had a weird sence of humor and I thought that this was just another one of his corny jokes. It wasn't until I returned to my upstairs office that my supervisor confronted me to hurry to the TV and see what just happened. At that time the second plane had just hit the second tower. I was shocked to the point of numbness for a few minutes and then it hit me. My son - my brother. My oldest son is in the National Guard and was about to finish basic training. My brother is in the Army and stationed at Ft. Hood in Kelline, TX. With both of them in the military, the possibility of them being call to be on a rescue mission became a small worry. Pride set in at that moment for my son and brother. But soon fear set in. A portion of the first tower fell, and it no longer seemed like there would be a rescue attempt, it would now be a clean up mission and search for survivors. Could my son handle finding deceased people or parts of people and still be the same young man I had seen grow up. Could my brother handle the same thing and still be the same loving husband and father. My thoughts soon changed when the rest of the tower fell. Those poor families left behind to cope with this tragedy alone without their loved ones. Wifes without husbands. Husbands without wives. Partents without children. Children without parents. At that moment a chill ran through me, so cold I had chill bumps all over me, which is very unusual for the humid Louisiana September, followed by a warmth I had never experienced before or since. I feel the chill was God's was of snapping me back to reality and the warmth was Him letting me know that He had all these victims in His arms and that He needed all these angels (victims) back in heaven for a very special mission. Typically, I go to the gym in the morning and usually get to work by 930am. When I arrived at the office, I found my coworkers talking about two planes that had hit the World Trade Center. I assumed that perhaps two planes had collided near the WTC. Like most, I was shocked upon entering the conference room and seeing the footage of United Airlines 175 slamming into the South Tower. The gaping hole in the North Tower was shaped like a plane and left little doubt that these acts were deliberate. Everyone in the office was glued to the TV, NBC I believe, and at this point a reporter at the Pentagon said that he felt an explosion in the building. A coworker and myself walked to the lobby of our building at L'Enfant Plaza. You could feel the chaos building. The guards were losing their ability to control who entered and left the building. We walked outside to the fountain at the end of the plaza and watched in horror as the Pentagon burned across the Potomac. Someone nearby had their car radio playing. While listening to the reports, we heard a loud explosion and everyone instinctively hit the ground. To this day, I have no idea what that explosion was. Many people were debating about whether to leave for home or not. I told them that sometimes in life you have to make your own decisions and began to walk home. The city was complete gridlock. Every street between work and my apartment near Foggy Bottom was filled with cars that were not moving anywhere. Most shops had already closed. Helicopters and jets were buzzing overhead. People uncharacteristically chatted with strangers. By the time I made it home, I already had five messages from friends and family asking me to call and let them know I was okay. I got dressed and brushed my teeth just like every other morning. But when I came downstairs to tell my mom I was ready to go to school, she was just getting off the phone and she was scared. She was confused and worried and she spoke softly. She told me she had just gotten off the phone with one of my older brothers, Micah. He lived in New York at the time, in Greenwich Village. She told me a plane had hit the World Trade Center. "Huh?" She said she didn't understand either. It didn't make any sense to either of us. Planes belong in the sky. Planes don't fly into buildings; that's the kind of thing that happens in movies and comic books. This is reality we're talking about here. But despite the fact neither of us could believe it, she said it had to be true, because Micah sounded scared, and Micah is never scared. So we got into the car and turned on the radio. And it was everywhere. "Planes have collided with the World Trade Center!" "They're on fire!" "The North Tower has just fallen!" Neither of us could speak. It was still comic book. Maybe it was a joke. And I was trying to recall, just what were the World Trade Center Towers? I had never seen them before. I'd been to New York, but I had only heard of them; that they were very tall. In fear of a possible attack on our Yeshiva High School, the Rabbis dismissed us after prayers. I still couldn't believe it. My friend Sam and I went to the Ralphs up the block to browse the magazine rack. We were talking like it was just another regular day. Finally I went home. I sat in front of the TV I rarely watch for the rest of the day. They played the same images over and over. I kept thinking, who's crazy enough to do this? Don't they know America is going to nuke'em? I wasn't able to do much else the rest of the day. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I can't say the events of September 11th have changed my life. And it makes me sad to admit that. I was shocked. I was afraid. But it, like many other things in my life, faded with time. Maybe it began to affect me less because it affected so many people, and it was feeling like I was part of some mass cult. Maybe it began to affect me less because I had never had a connection with the towers or the people they held. Maybe I wasn't affected because I'm a callused teenager and I see plenty of gory, shocking movies, and I wasn't able to distinguish between fiction and reality because it was presented to me on a television screen. Sadly, the only meaning I find in the events of September 11th is evidence of our mortality - of which I had some perception beforehand - and evidence that Arab extremists will not rest until all non-Arabs are dead or subservient to them. I realized the Israeli-Palestinian conflict wasn't just about land and religious rivalry, it was about Arab hate for everything other than them. While I can't say my life is any different now than it was a year ago before September 11th, I can say that those events succeeded in making me sick. In America, we have Western thinking and clear-cut logic. We should remember that in all things human, all over the world, our way of thinking and our way of life is not typical. Very often, we say things to the tune of, "But why would someone strap explosives to their chest and walk into a pizza shop? It doesn't make any sense." Share your experience. i live in hawaii and i remember waking up out of a dead sleep at 3a.m. that would have been 9 a.m. on East coast. i don't know excatly why i woke up, i fell asleep and woke up at 5:10a.m. to my sister telling that the world trade center had been hit. She had told me to turn on the tv, i did and found the world trade centers falling. All i thought about was oh my gosh where is my family are they ok, was daddy to be flying any where. My husband is in the Navy and his sub was out of port at the time and he had been sent home prior to this for medical reasons. I felt so bad for my friends that their husbands were gone. I think i would have been a lot more scared if My husband wasn't home. I remember calling family to make sure they were okay and being with friends. I used to go up and talk with anyone,i still do but i am not so open as i was before. I try not to take things for granted and i am more proud than ever to be married to Navy submariner. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11, I witnessed an event that will never be forgotten. There will never be any american that will not know what happened on 9-11. This event will most likely be taught to children in school, just like Pearl Harbor or any other devitating event to americans. And now the day September 11 will be taken for a special rememberance day, to honor those who tried to help, and those who were killed. Americans now fear more attacks, and security all over the U.S. has been increased to prevent them. Americans that were directly effected, or strongly effected in some way are organizing groups and funds to help people that are now in need, or without a family. 9-11 is a part of history, because it was a huge event that effected so many innocent people. And that I don't feel safe trusting people anymore. Not trust from person to person, but strangers in general. Its made me a little more cautious about everything. It makes me so mad that people take their opinions and personal thoughts so far because they think that they are right, to the point where they are hurting other people. I think that nobody should forget their own experiences. Everyone should remember where they were and exactly what they were doing when they found out what had happened. People that were not directly effected by the attacks should try not to forget, but people who were, its probably impossible to forget. People have lost family and friends that were innocent. And now some people don't have a place to live. All Americans should really go out on a limb and do everything possible to help those in need. My feelings have definetly changed about the flag now, as opposed to before the attacks. Usually you see the flag on holidays, like Labor Day and Memorial Day, but now you see them on cars and windows, in stores, all over peoples property. It makes me feel as if America is now one huge family brought together with their flags. Everyone has experienced this event in some way. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I still remember where I was and what I was doing like it was yesterday. I was sitting in French class sleeping like always when our principal, Mr. Heely came on the announcements. We weren't given much detail, but he basically said that some disaster has happened at both the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. Since I live only 20 or less miles from D.C., a lot of people at my school were freaking out because one or both of their parents worked at the Pentagon. I wasn't sure if my dad was there because he was scheduled to have a meeting there that day. Luckily, the meeting got scratched and he was across the street at Bolling AFB. Throughout the day, we weren't given much info on the situation, and we weren't allowed to watch T.V. to find out. I think our faculty didn't want anyone to exaggerate or start rumors about the situation. I only found out the severity of it when I went home and turned on the news. Being so close to D.C., the places in and around my city have taken more precautionary measures, and security was beefed up all over the area. The only way that I think it has effected my life is a very broad answer. The feeling that the United States was invincible and couldn't be attacked was lost. For a while, I walked around thinking what could happen next and if somewhere even closer to me would be attacked. That feeling has subsided with the passing of time, and with the military action that our nation has taken. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think all of the courage and hard work displayed by the firefighters, police officers, volunteers, and mostly the brave men that worked to stop the terrorists on the flight that landed in Pennsylvania. The thousands of men and women that not only died in the attacks but also the rescue effort should forever be recognized some how. Last, the feeling of pride and patriotism that the citizens of the U.S. displayed following the attacks should be carried on and remembered forever. No, my family and I didn't fly a flag. However, I think that the flag symbolizes the freedom and equality that is given in the U.S. more than ever. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at work listening to the radio. I had heard that a plane had crashed into the WTC. At first I pictured a "small" plane that must have gotten off track. What a tragedy; those poor people. Then they announced another plane...right then I knew, I knew something bad was happening. What a sickening feeling I felt in my stomach. We quickly found a small TV at the office next to ours. For hours we were all huddled around the TV in SHOCK. This kind of thing just does NOT happen here! Not here in the United States. Just writing this I'm experiencing those feelings of disbelief, nausea and sadness. In January of 2001, I had just gone through the biggest tragedy of my life. I lost my Dad in a pretty tragic way. Those same feelings of disbelief, nausea and sadness were what I had just experienced just 8 months prior. 2001.....Will never be forgoten! First, I think all of those innocent people should be remembered. They should be remembered at the areas in which they lost their lives. Instead of building more office buildings at the WTC site, why not make it JUST a memorial? It is afterall, the final resting place for many. Second, I think we need to remember that September 11, 2001 made all Americans realize that we are NOT indispensable. There are sick people out there that will stop at nothing to try and distroy us. I witnessed the history of sep.11 when i was home sick one day and i woke up to all the commotion on the news. At first I I didnt really know what was going on until i got all the details later and then the shock set in. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at my desk when I recieved a call that a plane hit the World Trade Center. The first thought was that a News helicopter or a small plane was the culprit. Then I remember hearing that another plane hit the World Trade Center. For some reason I didn't believe that the information I was getting was accurate. I thought that the information had already started to go through the you tell the story and someone else tells the story until a completely different story begins to emerge. Then it happened my email began to fill up with stories so I called home. My wife confirmed the story and also told me about what she was watching on TV. I couldn't believe the account. It was long after that it got even worse (if that was possible) the plane into the Pentagon and Flight 93 in Pa. It seemed all surreal. At about 11 or 11:30 we were released from work and home I went. I live in New Jersey and I am within 30 miles of NYC. From a high point in my town you can see the lights of the city at night. This day you didn't need the night to see the city. Large plumes of smoke filled the horizon. It was a terrible site. Hard to imagine what was going on. I like millions of others spent the balance of the day into the early morning hours of the next day watching TV yearning for information. The News was bad, all bad. I cried. The freedoms that we have enjoyed and fought so gallently for throughout our history have been taken from us in one terrible act of terrorism. Things that were taken for granted like, going to work each day, now begin with a search of belongings before you can enter the building. Taking a vacation via airplane has become a nightmare. You must spend several hours additional at airports so that you can submit to personal searches of your belongings and yourself. You need to several forms of ID wherever you go. It is like the old war movies line, "where are your papers"! This is not what America is about, but it is now. These freedoms to travel and go places can no longer be taken for granted. Fear of more attacks are always in the back of my mind. In this way, beyond the destruction, the terrorists have certainly made an impact on the American way of life. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Things to be remembered need to include the bravery of the men and women of NYC's Fire and Police Departments. Their unselfish giving was and still is remarkable. The thousands of volunteers from around the area and from around the country that came to NY & Washington's aid. And almost above all the renewed sense of Partriotism in America and what we stand for. This country has come together like no other time I can remember. I am proud to say that I am an American. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On the morning of September 11, I awoke early to feed my then-three-week-old son. As usual, I turned on the news and settled down for a quiet morning in Austin, Texas. When the local newscast was over, The Today Show came on, already showing the first hit. I was concerned because of the ferocity and location of the fire, but the images didn't relate where the fire had happened. Until the camera panned to include the Statue of Liberty, I didn't recognize the World Trade Center. When the second explosion came, I knew something was terribly wrong, but I still didn't understand. I initially thought the first fire had caused an explosion in the second tower. Then, Matt Lauer announced, We are under attack. I tried calling my mother immediately; she and my father were already at work in Fort Hood, but my call couldn't go through: "All circuits are busy." I next called my supervisor at work, just to speak to someone; she told me they had a TV there and were watching. This was at 8:15am CST. I needed to speak to my family, and next tried my sister, who was living in Italy due to her Air Force husband's overseas assignment. I knew she had no connection to what was happening here since they got very few channels on the TV--what they received were black and white and very static-y. I spent the next three hours relating the events to my sister as they happened--from the attack on the Pentagon, to the rumors flying (the bombing of the State Department), to the plane that inexplicably went down in Pennsylvania (not a coincidence, we knew), to the Towers collapsing (at first I told her it was just the façade, or only the top). I thank God I didnt know people were jumping (my mother cried as she told me, later that day)NBC didnt show them. I dont know how I was able to tell my sister those horrible things and not break down. I knew I was her only link, at that moment, to home and family, and she needed me just as much as I needed to hear her voice. Many people speak of that dazzling blue sky and the smoke staining it. The nights are my lasting memory: during the day, I was dazed from exhaustion (caring for a colicky newborn, trying to get my daughter adjusted to a new sibling). As soon as I awoke to feed my son, I would turn on the television. In the stillest part of the night, it was just the two of us, and the terrible wreckage in New York. I felt that while all of Texas slept, I was witness to the night, to the innumerable trucks and inescapable dust. The full extent of that day didnt hit me until days later. Not until one night, when, exhausted, I asked myself why we had had another child, did I realize what I was feeling. Regretting life? What would any of those who lost loved ones say? What would they give, to caress a loved ones cheek, one last time? I cried then, letting the emotion come I had been afraid to confront for so long. I am so sorry… I cried, apologizing to those who died, to those left behind, to those affected. I remember when the Challenger exploded, how my parents cried as they told us what happened. I was bewildered: why were they crying for people they didnt know? To this day, September 11th brings tears to my eyes. The victims, the heroes, the survivors, the observers: as Americans, as humans, we were all touched in some way that day. The greatest monument we could ever build is a living memoryto never forget the heroism and horrors of that day, taking the lessons learned of reaching out to loved ones to let them know we care, to live life as if this day were our last. I remember sitting in my 5th grade class watching the news the whole day and then going home after school and seeing my mom cry was heartbreaking. I most remember watching the people jumping out of the windows knowing they were going to die. I cried it was so sad. My family watched the T.V. for a whole week. It was so hard to watch. This attack made me and my family, friends, and just people all over America so much stronger because they thought this attack would break us apart. What it really did was bring us closer together because there were people that did lived through the attack. People should remember that we are strong because if this didnt break us apart what will? On the day that the trageic events of September 11 occured i was at home preparing for just another normal day of junior high, but that day was anothing but normal. I had woken up that day groggy and tired like any other day and i vaguely heard something about a plane crashing into a building from my mom. I was only 14 at the time and i thought nothing of it. Planes crash occasionally and, living in the city, it was no surprise to me. It was about the time that i reached my junior highschool that i realized something was wrong. Wispers filled the air and i did not know why. It was till my friend told me what had heppened tha i realized the magnitude of it.
