<text>My life has changed since Spetember 11, but it wasn't in a direct way. I still remember sitting in choir class and hearing what happened. I didn't know anybody in New York, or Washington D.C., or on any of the planes, but it wasn't until months later that I began to feel the effects of the events that took place on that day. My father, both of my grandfathers, and most of my guys friends belong to volunteer fire departments. The men that are on the fire department in my small town are like second fathers to me. They look out for me, and they will always hold special places in my heart. Months after September 11, 2001 I began to think that any of my "fathers" could have been killed in these attacks. If one of them would be harmed I don't know what I would do. I can only imagine the sence of loss that these people's families felt when they were notified of their loss. Ever since then I have a greater outlook on life. I realize that now that we all aren't Superman and we can't always be protected from everything. I know that anyday could be your last, and that you have to cherish what you have. It could be gone in a blink of an eye.</text>

<text>I was working at the Nasdaq Stock Market. We watched the second plane hit in real time. Nasdaq has live feeds from the MarketSite running all day long.

After the Pentagon was attacked I left the office to go home. It was very eerie and quiet except for the military helicopters flying overhead. The main roads were virtually deserted, it was one of the fastest commutes I've ever had.

My husband saw the Pentagon smoke from his office in Arlington. His building was under "lock down" but he was fine. I was worried he wouldn't make it home from there but he did.

I was also concerned for the safety of some of my friends and former coworkers at Thomson Financial in NY. So I spent the rest of the day trying to contact people through email and by phone.

<text> My name is Rachel. On Septembe11, 2001, I was at my school. I remember siting in my 2nd period class, when I first heard the news. The sad thing was that I did not even know what the World Trade Center was. In my 3rd period class we looked at pictures on the internet, as well as listened to the radio. I will never forget hearing them say that the North tower was collasping. Little did I know what devistation this really was. Through this year I have found out so much information about the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. My heart goes out to the familys that mourn for their loss, even a year later. How people can take the lives of innocent victims is beyond me. Now I know how serious this attack really was. Throughout the year I have witnessed what our country really stands for. In the time of great fear we united together and remained strong. I believe God was with every person that day. I believe He is still with us and He is what holds America together. Americans often take advantage of freedom. I know I took advantage of it, before the attack. It was a real wake up call. Not only to me, but to all Americans.
I remember going home that day and watching the television. I remember seeing the fear in people's eyes. I just cried. Throughout the year I have felt for the people who lost their loved one in this terrrorist attack. I think one of the worse things about the whole attack is the people thought it was going to be a normal day. Little did they know it would be the last time to hear or see their loved ones. All I have to say to those who attacked us is: You all may think you have done something that was going to cause our nation to fall and be in chaos, but in truth all you did was cause our nation to become stronger than ever! May God Bless Us All!

<text>On Sept 11th I was working about 40 miles south of NYC in a NJ Police Department. I saw other officers in the lounge gathering around the TV and I instinctively approached. (Every time something happens in the world, that is a drawing place) The other cops were watching after the first plane hit and we wondered if it was a small plane or a commuter jet. As we were talking out of nowhere came the other plane. We were frozen as it hit and within a second or so, I looked at another officer and said That was no #%$*$$ accident and we moved to organize our response. As head of our technical services division, The Chief and I began to plan the next step. The officer I was speaking to in the lounge was in the reserves and had been involved in high level protection services. His cell phone quickly rang and he was off to active duty. It is now March of 2003 and we havent seen him yet. No one can know the frustration of being able to see the smoke from the towers and not being able to go and help. After all, thats what we do! We were all ordered to stay in town and we worked on securing the schools and sensitive buildings we had. Fairly quickly, NYPD and NJSP sent out teletypes requesting no more emergency personnel in the city.

After work I went up to the Highlands and the ferrys to help the people coming over. And then I took some paramedics home who came over on the last ferry. We were busy as hell, but we took care of the community which was our jobs. To this day, many of us have what you might call survivor guilt. That night, I got home and tried to relax and even tried to sit and play my guitar which often sooths. I ended up writing a song which I played at a benefit at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park a week or so later. Many people in the audience cried. So did I. A music critic there said in his story that the song visibly moved the audience. I couldnt even think of trying to record the song commercially because it was my gift to the people lost. I did make a basement CD of the song and when I went up to NYC on my days off and worked at the trade center site, gave it to the local firehouses and the PDs. (I can not even bear to call the site Ground Zero because that too seems to be a commercialization of the tragedy. Like when the embassy in Iran was taken and ABC launched Ted Kopels night show)

<text>I dropped my boys off at daycare and drove to Westfield High School, where I am an English and Creative Writing teacher. It was a special day for me, and I remember looking up at the sky, feeling so very peaceful because it was a beautiful, clear, mild day, and it was my birthday -- my 40th. I felt so content and happy, because while most dread their 40th birthday, my life is so full and beautiful. My friends and colleagues in the English department had a birthday celebration set up for me in the English department, so it promised to be a fun day.

Between 1st and 2nd period, I snuck over to the office to grab another cup of coffee, when another teacher said to me, "Someone flew a plane into the World Trade Center." I didn't quite understand what exactly that meant, but I guess in my head I must have pictured a small cessna airplane hitting a big building, and wondering how on earth that happened. By the time I got to my classroom, a student had turned on the television and we all watched the events unfold, the details and truth of what happened becoming clearer and clearer, and my high school students looking to me for explanation, looking so lost and scared. As scared and shocked as I was, I continually comforted them, telling them that I had faith in our government, and that we would be okay. One young man asked me, "Why do they hate us so much?" How do you answer that? Some parents were coming to get their children, probably not so much out of fear for their safety, but the need to hold them in such a confusing time. I know I wanted to hold my children, too, but I knew that their teachers and caregivers would comfort them as I was comforting my students. They needed me now, and my children would have me when we returned home from the day. They were younger and wouldn't fully understand the implications - my students knew full well the possibilities that lay before us.

I cried that day. I cried that night. I cried when our high school football team had a moment of silence. I cried when our band and the opposing team's band had worked out a wonderful tribute within the few days since it happened. I still cry when I remember that day.

I will always feel a special bond with those students from that one class during that one year. We shared one of the most horrific events in American History together, and I will always see their faces and feel their fear whenever we mark another year of remembrance.

The week after the attacks, I wrote a poem that I shared with my students in our literary magazine:

Shards of Glass
by LuAnn Underwood

Shards of glass, steel, life
shiver and explode
through the images
which puncture and pierce
through my heart,
seeking unknown areas.
Souls lost
find a home in me, capturing my attention,
holding hostage my thoughts and fears.
My life stands still with anticipation, grief,
and a fierce resolve
to remember,
to comfort ,
to love...
our God,
our fellow man,
our country.
In time the souls will find their way,
my mind will feel release
and put my tears on hold.
The love I feel
will fuel my life once again,
relieving to rebuild our world
and releasing me.

<text>I was attending the Mannes College of Music in New York City. I had been living in the city, having moved from Alberta, Canada, a week to the day of 9/11/01. My dorm was just two blocks from the Trade Center, and my 9th floor window looked right out at the Twin Towers, here is my journal entry dated Sept. 11, 2001.

"I was sleeping when the first plane struck the building. I saw paper falling from the sky; I thought it was a ticker tape parade. I looked down at the people below my window and saw them staring up. I saw the the tower was a flame. I was concerned but not alarmed, and went to get my bowl of cereal. I watched out my window while the TV played behind me. I heard an announcer say that a second plane was heading toward the 2nd tower, and I saw the exploseion. People started running frantically away from the buildings. Debris and paper were just raining form the sky, and smoke was literally billowing from both buildings. The ball of fire that from the 2nd exposion engulfed the entire top half of that tower. I began to shake all over. I gathered up violin and travel documents and tried to leave, but the security guard would not let anyone leave the building. I went back to my room and prayed. I couldn't take my eyes off the towers, debris was falling from way up there, and then the people started jumping. I couldn't watch.

I thought everything was over after that 2nd plane crashed. Like, what else was there for the terrorists to do? I was/am pretty frightened. I emailed mom and dad to tellthem I am OK. Then I hared that the Pentagon was also attaacked. I emailed mom and dad again to tell them the news. I went back to the window to watch...school was out of the question. Then the tower that I saw get hit collapsed without warning. I saw it from the window and again people were running in terror. A huge billowing clowd of debris, ash, and smoke rushed toward my window. I was rooted to the spot until my roomate pulled me away from the window. We hid behind an armoir till it had passed. The sky outside was black and soot was coming through the air conditioner. Dust was settling over everything in the room. We got face towels, soaked them in water and held them over our faces all day.

By then I had again collected my violin and travel documents as well and my computer and Bible. I went downstairs to the 2nd floor to see what was going on in our building. They had us sign a paper when I got there just so they would know who's in the building. We went back upstairs like they told us to, but a bunch of us went to a room on the other side of the dorm where the smoke wasn't so bad. i went to my room to make sure the AC was off when the other building collapsed. This time the smoke wasn't so dramatic, there was still too much soot in the air from the first building, but when the cloud hit our building it was pitch black. No light came through. It looked as though a black blanket was covering the window. I grabbed this notebook and started writing when I got back to the other room down the hall.

We got called back downstairs to the mail room, where I still am. here we've learned that ALL the airports in the country are shut down and people are saying another plane crashed into a Pennsylvania airport.

So far both buildings of the WTC are totally destroyed, the Pentagon is in flames, an airport in Pennsylvania has reported a crash, the White House has been evacuated, the NYSE is shut down, all the airports are closed, and Mnahatten is literally "quarenteened".

Right now most students are on the 2nd floor. I'm still the in mail room which is relatively free from smoke and ash. It's about 11:45 a.m. about 3 hours since everything started. Two girls went out to look for their cousin who works at the WTC. They got cought in the ash cloud. They came back in completely gray, except for the where the tears traced lines down their face.

I have no idea what's going to happen. I've heard we might be evacuated to another dorm for the night. I want to pack up and leave and get out of this country. This could start another war and I want out of here. Whatever happens, I've made my peace with God."

<text>Like many Americans, I watched the story unfold on TV while at work. In Michigan, it was a beautiful, September day just like it was in New York.

Even though I live in the Midwest, I grew up in New Jersey with Manhattan's skyline a frequent site from any Bergen County vista.

The punch in the stomach for me was when the first tower fell...for some reason it was a very personal connection. I had taken a class in the WTC as a teenager for a week one summer. My dad had worked up the street from there and took the PATH train in from Hoboken. NYC had always been a part of my life.

I remember being shocked and worried for at least a few days until I had determined that none of my friends, family or co-workers were in the city that day. Two of my co-workers, doing research in Washington at the time, saw the plane hit the Pentagon and had to drive back to Michigan from D.C. Luckily, they already had a rental car.

I felt this compelling need to go to NY but didn't know how I could have helped. When I tried to give blood here, I was turned down (even O-negative!) because they had too much and wanted us to wait. I felt helpless, in schock, and very sorry for those who had posted signs of their loved ones who were missing. I couldn't work at my normal capacity for at least 3 weeks because my mind was constantly distracted. I cried a lot. And I told myself I would get to NYC eventually to pay my respects at the WTC site. I visited Ground Zero in March 2002.</text>

<text>My life has changed in subtle ways that are somewhat combined with the aging process, I think. Mostly, Sept. 11 has increased my fear of flying, which was already on the rise because of my constant realization that it seems very unnatural for human beings to be in the air. It's like amusment parks....I used to go on the rides a lot as a kid but suddenly as an adult I realized it seemed risky to do that. Same with flying, although 9/11 has amplified that realization. While on airplanes I think about the last moments for those people who saw the WTC straight on before their plane exploded; or the ones who already knew about the WTC crashes and were trying to avoid further disasters by attempting to fight the hijackers. My previous desire to travel the world has suddenly shrunk to "just certain parts of the world". Would I have begun to felt that way as I aged anyway because of deeper understandings of politics and volatile environments? Maybe, but 9/11 has certainly influenced my wanderlust nature and reined me in. I'm more of a homebody, but I haven't turned travel down either because I agree with others who claim that that would be allowing the terrorists to "win".

And, I also feel slightly "on edge" all the time, perhaps like a combat veteran who associates certain times of the year with traumatic events, or sounds of nature or humankind (such as crickets, or gunshots) with events of war. I feel like we'll never be ready for the next terrorist attack. And I dreaded September--usually my favorite month of the year--this year because of the 9/11 anniversary. Will it ever go away enough to enjoy September again?</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="563496">
<text>That morning, I had arrived at work at The Boeing Company, like countless mornings before it. Frazzled and rushed from getting my kids ready for school and then getting myself to work. I habitually waited to eat breakfast until arriving at work. Like every other morning before it, I went into our cafeteria for breakfast. As I was standing in line to order, I heard some people talking about the horrible "accident" in NYC. I turned to see the TV screen, tuned the the CBS morning show, and saw the billowing smoke from what everyone at that time assumed was a horrible accident. It was the first plane.

I got my breakfast, and went back to my desk. I told everyone along the way what was going on, and immediately tried to access CNN.com for further news. Frustrated by not being able to get on the site, I went back into the cafeteria to watch the news. I walked in, and there was already a crowd gathered in front of this one small TV. I sat next to a co-worker and asked what all was happening. At about this time, the second plane came in and turned toward the buildings. She and I clutched hands and watched in horror as the second plane intentionally smashed into the second Tower. I ran back to my desk, panicked by this point.

I told everyone that a second plane had hit, and that this time it was clear that this was no accident. I called my mother, who doesn't work, to ask her what was going on. She was in shock, and nearly speechless, as she said that the TV news was reporting it as a terrorist attack. I remember telling her that there was no way it was that. This is America, and that doesn't happen here! I asked her to keep me posted on anything else going on. By this point, our entire building was silent, as everyone was huddled around a TV screen, unable to pull away from it. I stayed at my desk to continue to try to access the internet for news. My phone rang again, and I knew it was my mother.

I picked it up, and she told me that there had been an explosion at the Pentagon. That later turned out to be an airplane, and not an explosion as was first indicated in the confusion. Again, I told her to keep me posted, and I went back into the cafeteria to watch the news more. When some time had gone by without any further incident, I went back to my desk, to be met by a ringing phone. It was mom again.

A plane had been crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. At this point, I didn't know what to think. This was unheard of. I couldn't understand it, and I was scared. I have two small children, and I worry for them.

Shortly after the plane in Pennsylvania went down, we were dismissed from work for the day. It was a strange and awful drive home that morning. I was glad to hug my husband (who worked in a building across town), and hug my kids when they got out of school.

I also believe that all of the victims need to be remembered somehow. These people never did a single thing to deserve such a horrible and tragic death.

The bravery of the people on Flight 93, especially Todd Beamer, should be remember as well. If they had not had the strength, courage and faith that they did, things likely would have been much worse. Even knowing they would die themselves, they were willing to do so, to prevent countless thousands more from suffering. They are truly heroes.

I was a passenger on United flight 907 from London to Newark. My heart was heavy the entire flight. I never reached Newark on that fateful day. Instead, United flight 907 was rerouted to Halifax, Canada where I spent the next several days. I could not reach family for several days and when I did, my wife cried while telling me she was ready to be with me wherever I am and that she dearly loved me. We are inseparable, now and live in Billings, Montana. We are VERY happy, together and much in love.</text>

<text>Just another story like billions of others. I woke up around 6:00 am California time and got my kids ready for school. We didnt turn on the tv that morning, dont know why. I had one daughter in JR high and the other in elementry school so I had to drive to two schools each day and its a long drive. Round trip takes about one hour. We got in the car and drove for a while about half way I turned on the radio and all every station had on it was DJ's talking. I had no idea what was going on. I kept hearing about a plane and a tower being blown up. I hurried and droped off one kid and then the other. I was debating on just going home with my kids but I also worked as a yard duty at my youngest daughters school so I knew I would be back ther later that day. I went home all the way listening to people say that we were under attack. When I finally got home which took forever, my husband was still asleep. I turned on the TV and saw buildings burning and then I ran into the room and woke up my husband saying to him "wake up! we are under attack" he just said WHAT! Then I said " America is under attack" so he would understand me better I said "get up" we watched in horor as a second tower was hit. I really had no idea what was going on at that point. Then a news man came on explaining what was happening and that they thought it was terrorist. When I finally put two and two together I was angry. Later that day I had to go to work at the school. I was only there mon thru fri for about two hours a day. When I got there the whole school was a buzz about what was going on and I felt like I didnt want to be there. I just wanted to take my kids home. But I had a job to do which was watching over those kids during lunch and recess. After a while I started thinking what if this school was attacked what would we do? So many kids and only three yard duties. It would be a mess. Funny how thoughts like that go threw your head. My life and everyones lives were changed on that day. I cried a lot more for the next few days. Having lost my father only two years earlier at the age of 51 to a sudden heart attack, I knew what it felt like to loose people without warning. I felt sorry for the familys of the ones lost. I also wanted revenge. I am still angry today and I dont think that will ever fade.</text>

And right there on the tv they were showing this plane and then saying it crashed into the World Trade Center, right away I was confused, and millions of questions were going through my mind then the next second later I saw the 2nd plane crash on tv. My heart sank and I couldn't talk at all. My mom was about crying and I thought I was going to. Then my bus came which I ran out to. But all through the day at school our teachers talked to us about it. It was one of the scariest, saddest days of my life. I will remember it forever!</text>

<text>It was a beyond regular day. Everything seemed normal and routine. As usual I found myself to be a somewhat lifeless zombie that morning as i went to school... more so then usual for the nightbefore i blew out 15 candles on my birthday cake. First hour was boring and usual and I was actually excited to head off to SCIENCE with my teacher Mr. Christopherson. I can still remember everything about those few moments so clearly. About mid hour, our principal took our teacher out of the classroom. As soon as he came back in everyone could tell that something was out of place. In a lifeless and deep voice he explained to us what he knew: that the WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWER 1 had been a vicitim of terrorists, we, AMERICA were under attack. I couldn't hanlde it, at first it thought it was some type of emergency testing drill. He then turned on the televison and more details began to envelop us and I was utterly speachless. We then hearded over to ENGLISH and sat and watched as the SECOND WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWER was hit. It was unbelievable and I couldn't handle it. Misty tears began to cloud my vison and i wanted to go home. The people next to me tried to say that "this doesn't affect us at all." But they were completely wrong... this situation was affecting AMERICA and I am AMERICAN.</text>

Now i know just how much hatred is in the world. Security is byfar more precautious. Hatred is in the eyes of everyone, everywhere I look. In some ways I am thankful for the destruction I saw and the realizaions that I came to, because now I support AMERICA more then I ever did before. <elementText elementTextId="563286">
<text>I was late for work on September 11, 2001 because one of my children was sick and we weren't sure if he would be able to go to school. Just as I was about to leave the house to head for work, my mother-in-law called and told me to turn on the television. The second plane had already hit the WTC, and details were very sketchy. The general consensus was that it was a terrorist attack, but at that point nobody really knew what kind of planes were involved. I went on to work, and by the time I got there, all my co-workers were aware what had happened. The initial shock quickly escalated to fear as my thoughts at the time were something like, "If they would do something like this, is there anything they won't do?"
At 1,300 miles away from Lower Manhatten, I believed that I was relatively safe in Fayetteville, Arkansas, but the fear was still very real as we listened to continuing reports and heard that other planes were involved. Knowing that any number of thousands of commercial airliners were still in the air, I couldn't help but worry that this was only the beginning of a broad series of hijackings that could ultimately result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. It was a very though day as we waited and waited to find out what would happen next.
As bad as it turned out to be, I still felt that we had gotten off lucky. If the planes had hit the towers later in the day, thirty or forty stories lower, the losses could have been so much greater. And if the people on Flight 93 had not learned of the events of the day, would they have bravely rushed the hijackers, or would they have assumed like the passengers on the other three planes that they would have eventually been brought down with a minimum of loss? How tragic and how devastating would it have been for our country if that plane had made it to Washington? And how may of the cancelled flights that day were to have hijackers on board with more targets in west coast and midwest cities?
Having lost no friends or relatives on September 11, I have to consider myself extremely lucky, but in my own way I joined millions of Americans in feeling the loss as though it had occurred in my own home town. On that day, as I do every day on my job, I spoke with several people in the New York City area, and the horror was evident in their voices. One man named Richie asked me, "Did you hear what they did to us?" My immediate answer to him was, "They did it to all of us, Richie. They did it to every one os us."</text>

              <text>My Story is as Follows
I was working that morning in WTC # 1 on the 23rd floor when the 1st plane hit, like everyone on our floor I was taken by what was first the Crash of the plane & then the Explosion it sent Through the Building. At that time I did not know it was a plane that caused the explosion so I had no fear because I felt the explosion was above us and new we had to get out. My first reaction was to make sure no one panicked being one of the fire wardens of the floor I made sure everyone got off the floor in an orderly fashion. There were some people who sat at their desk waiting for word on what to do however I assured them that the best thing to do was to get out. Some women was on the floor praying as I picked her up I told her the best thing to do would be to pray in the Stairs going down, I also had to stop the Stock delivery Guy from trying to get his stock wagon out through the doors. That was mainly it. I went around the floor 1 more time & checked both bathrooms to make sure I was the last one on that floor. Then I made my descend down to the lobby which is when I came across a man on the 20th floor who was having a asthmatic attack he didnt want to move. The Fireman asked if 2 men could volunteer to carry this man down so I volunteered as one of those Men. We carried him to the Lobby were he then said he can walk on his own then the other man left so he used my shoulder to lean on as we went through the lobby to get outside. It was then when he dropped his pump that a cop came over to help that I asked the Cop what happened he then told me that someone flew a plane into WTC 1 and just 10 minutes ago someone just did it to WTC # 2 also. So as I was in the staircase another plane hit tower 2. Now as I was leaving the trade center through borders bookstore a daily news photographer took a picture of me with the man I carried down. & I didnt know this picture was available in a gallery at 420 east 9th street with other pictures of that day until a friend of mine noticed it in a store by the trade center in March of 2002. Now Because of this picture I was able to find out who the man was because on that day I just brought him to a ambulance on Broadway and they took care of him and I just went home by the way of the Brooklyn Bridge. The man works for the same company as me, I didnt know him I just came down and saw someone and helped him. His name is William Garrido I called him in April and he was pleased to here from me and very grateful of me for helping him that day. Getting back to that day I also want to say that as I was quarter way going over the bridge that Tower 2 collapsed and by the time I arrived to the Brooklyn side of the Bridge the other building was history too. My first thing was to go to my wifes job so she knew I was Ok I had no way of getting in touch with her other wise. She was so happy to see me and we both went home to get our kids who were in school at the time and to assure or families that I was OK.
