September 11, 2001 started out as a beautiful day in the Chicago area, early fall with the trees just beginning to turn gold and russet. My school is located about 2 miles from O'Hare airport, which had to pay for soundproofing our school. There are 4 flight paths that cross over my school on a normal day. I teach middle school, social studies, 7th grade homeroom. I had arrived at school at 6am, about 7am I went out for a nicotine fix, it was then that I noticed what would become known as the 'Clear Blue Skies'. A half hour later, I was working on lesson plans when 3 8th grade students came in to check their reports with me. While we were discussing, my instant messenger beeped, my friend, another teacher, didn't have television in her class and was asking me to turn on CNN, she couldn't get enough information about what was happening in NY. There was an 'accident' at one of the trade towers. With the students there, I turned on the news. We were mesmerised. One of them asked me if it was 'on purpose.' I replied, 'While it's understandable to think that, it's more likely to be an accident-a pilot had a heart attack or someone didn't know how to deal with such a big city.' As the reports kept coming in, we are talking a period of about 5 minutes, probably less, I thought it might be a good idea to let the principal know what was going on, but before I could leave the room-the kids began screaming about a second plane. Watching it hit the second tower, I said, "Expletive deleted." The brightest amongst the kids was crying, she asked, "What does this mean?" I replied, "I'm not sure, but I'd bet Osama bin Laden." The previous Spring, these kids, now 8th graders, had written to the new Secretary of State, Colin Powell, to decry the destruction of the Buddah icons in Afghanistan. They were much more concerned with reports that homosexuals and Jews were being forced into wearing identifying patches. Neither Powell, nor State had responded, much to the kids chagrin. This was one of the repercussions of teaching in a parochial school, where I was able to adjust the curriculum. It seemed I'd done my job too well. With that I told them I needed to turn off the television and talk to the pricipal, 'no television until I returned'. The bell had just rung, and it was time to let the all the other kids into the building. Our school is preschool-8th grade. After quickly conferring with the pricipal, it was decided that 7th-8th grade would be in my room, watching the television, cancelling gym, art, Spanish, as well as regular academics, until the situation became more clear. 4th-6th grade teachers would have to make their own decisions, but the younger grades would have to 'carry on,' as if it was a normal school day. We found that we had at least 15 had parents en route or in NYC. 3 students fathers were pilots for American or United. Many parents of younger students were concerned that their children would 'hear something', they wanted them 'protected.' We were trying to deal with 3 year olds-14 year olds. Rather quickly the pricipal decided that all televisions would be off, except in my room; every room is cable ready and also alert ready. 7th and 8th grades only would be in my room for the day, regular classes would be cancelled for these 2 grades. Before we could catch our breath, the attack on the Pentagon occured. As I said previously, we are located in the path of at least 4 flight paths, very quickly, the skies became quiet. As the day progressed, this silence would speak volumes. One 6th grader it happened, had his father stationed at the Pentagon. It was thus decided that 6th grade would join the 7th and 8th grades. His mother came and picked up his pre-school sibling, she couldn't reach either her husband or her high school aged daughter. A nurse, she decided that the son would be better off at school than at home. Considering we are nearly 1,000 miles away, it brings home how the attacks hit across the country. By 11 o'clock, everything that could happen, had. We'd watched the towers come down. We'd heard from the kid's parents, thank god all were alright. The child whose parent was at the Pentagon, he still hasn't been released from duty, but at least we all know he is staying in Washington. I don't teach World History or religion exactly as I did before, I will admit that. I guess that has more to do with your section on how life changed because of 9/11/01. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I teacher differently, no doubt about that. I am a middle school social studies teacher in a Catholic school, in a Chicago suburb. I teach World History to 6th grade, emphasis on anchient culture, including Mesopotamia, India, Israel. 7th and 8th grades are American History, including Constitution and theories underlying it. I also teach 7th and 8th grade religion, which includes the foundations of Catholic faith and the rituals of coming of age. In 7th grade the students are exposed to the major religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Greeks, Romans, Shintoism, Atheism and Agnosticism (guess the last 2 at least are not really religions, but belief/nonbelief systems.) Prior to 9/11 my emphasis was on the 'commonality of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.' Post 9/11 it may be descibed more as a compare and contrast. It was very easy to make the connections with stories of floods, famines and good works. Post 9/11, I ask the class what is common, what is different? How can monotheistic religions differ on the outcome? Can you cite extremism in Christianity? Islam? Judaism? (most problem with the last). I am not as quick to give moral equivalance across the boards. It would not be intellectually correct, the kids are reading and cutting out current events that show the differences. This most definately breaks my heart. I'm 47 years old, since I was a child, my parents and the nuns that taught me, said that all peoples strive for 'a greater good.' They conceded that within any given religion or belief system there existed those that would kill to impose their 'vision' of perfection. Truth to tell, as a Catholic I had much more to fear from the Lutherans in my town, than any Muslims or Jews from what I'd been told. Post 9/11, well the danger is from another front. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The shock that someone could kill so many, without any stated reason. I guess, after reading that sentence, no reason could justify the taking of lives. The shock that there are those that hate us, because we are Americans, because we are not Muslims, because we don't see what they do. I don't think we should, I think they are wrong to demand it of us, though I will not say they don't have the right to believe as they will. They can hurt us, they can kill us, they can terrorize us, but they cannot take away our ability to see and accept other possibilities than our own. Where we see alternatives, they see infidels. I was in 1st period, English class, Ms.DeBonis was my teacher, my gym teacher Ms. Zolo ran in the class room and said "OH MY GOD! TURN ON CHANNLE 5, THE WORLD TRADE CENTER WAS JUST HIT WITH A PLANE!" I went into shock, I couldn't speek,I just went blank, knowing, that my step-father Lt.Robert Cirri of the PAPD was there...I just knew he was, something just told me, like my gut feeling was telling me that he was there,I couldn't speek I just.. cryed and pointed to the tv..and then I couldn't take it, and screamed"WHY, WHY DID HE HAVE TO BE THERE! I had just arrived at work inside the Chevron Refinery in Richmond, CA when someone said that an aircraft had hit one of the World Trade Center's buildings. From a small television set, starting at 5:45am PDT, six of us watched the second building get hit and then with horror, we watched both fall to the city's floor. Most were in shock and disbelief; others where angry wanting revenge, and then others were scared for their own safety because they kept asking: "What's next? This place (the refinery)?" About half way through my teacher got a call and instintly turned on the TV. The first thing that our class saw was a huge plane hit a building. At first I did not think a whole lot of it because I figured it was just some movie or TV show. But when it was showed over and over again and saw all of the people running as far away as they could I knew this was not something from a movie. And that this was something that was terrible and would probably not be seen again in my life time. The next couple of minutes were completely silent. And how mad they are of the fact that we live in a democratic country. I have been around during want I thought were the worst things that would happen, like the Colorado school shootings. I heard the answering machine kick on. A friend of mine said, "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. Wake up and turn on the TV!" I turned the TV on and saw the top of the first tower on fire. Just as what I was seeing registered, the second plane swooped into the picture and crashed into the second tower. If anything, I am more aware of my surroundings and those around me. I pay attention to faces. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We should remember the fallen. We should remember the brave souls who went up in a building that was falling down. We should remember the families who lost loved ones. Our local newspaper added a flag insert right after 9-11. I posted that up in my cubby at work, where it still resides even though it's turning yellow with age. That flag represents everything we stand for, believe in and live for as Americans. It is a symbol of strength and resolve. I immidiatly got out of my bed to the voice of the screetching radio. My mom stated "New York is under attack." I turned on my television and saw the report on CNN. I was horrified to see the first tower that has hit and watched in disbelief as the second one was attacked. It seemed surreal to me, that it couldn't really be happening. Right away I wondered how we, as teachers could possibly know how to calm the fears of our students when our own fears were burgeoning. Somehow, we did find a way, and our school pulled together to offer a tribute to the heroes and the victims of that horrible day. In the aftermath of the attacks, I fully realized just how fragile peace is and how lucky I am to live in a country where people do pull together to support each other. I also came to fully appreciate the sacrifice that our ancestors made to ensure that we live in this country and not one where tyranny rules. I think I have become even closer to my church and my belief and that I need to work even harder to be a part of an effort for tolerance and peace in the world. I think we should all remember that we are a nation of one, and that those who served that day in any capacity showed all of us just what patriotism is all about -- that we do have a duty to others and that we need to do what it takes to make certain that our fellow countrymen will continue to live free. Share your experience. i was sitting in 3rd period history and my teacher was late so we all were joking on how we were going to leave because he was late. he came in and told us that two planes had crashed into the towers. people kept coming into the room (other teachers) and kept updating him and telling us what was going on. it wasnt fun because we were one of the first classes to hear about it and so i had to tell some of my friends. When the bell rang at 9:40 to switch classes the hall was buzzing with news of the attacks. I couldn't believe it so I turned on the SmartBoard and started watching the news with my class. Like many others, I was fortunate to have witnessed the falling of the twin towers only through the diminished screen of my television. However, the event was so haphazard that in the end, I wasn't sure it had even occurred at all. I watched the slow, yet deadly crumbling of the nation's most significant buildings as it happened in the well loved New York city. The first thing that came to my mind was, "Is this really happening?", then after being reassured by the constant monotone statements from the newsman, I realized what a huge impact this would have on the people of America. More importantly, what a huge impact it would have on the children of America; I could not picture, much less feel what sort of shock and empty emotions would fill a child as they woke up to be told, your mother has died, or you're dad isn't coming back. Maybe the child wouldn't even understand what it meant, after all, how could somenone just disappear? As I think back to those few seconds of realization, I feel a strange reaction in my body, I almost seem afraid to remember how profound the making of history felt, but the scary part is, I was just watching a million dots coming through electric charges unto my tv screen, what about those who were actually there, and survived? My life has changed because of Semptember 11th in the sense that I now appretiate life more than I did before, and I am also more thankful to have what I have and to still be. Furthermore, I've become afraid of an old postcard someone had sent us three years ago of the twin towers. I am afraid of the knowledge that nothing more exists in that vast area of land, that I am stil here, and they are not. That postcard haunts me, it seems to mock the essence of life as if to say, "Look what you've become, or rather, haven't" NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everything. There is nothing that should be forgotten, but instead, much that should be appreciated. It is true that many people were lost and nothing can justify this loss. However, I think it is important to remember that one cannot blame or put down a whole crowd for the actions of a few. I saw a bumper sticker the other day, and am sure that there exist many more with the same message, that expressed the ridiculous activity against a certain nationality. I cannot say I am for nor against what the bumper sticker encouraged, for I am simply a witness, but instead of shunnning those who were born a certain nationality, we should respect and comfort any in need. There is no black and white, no good team and bad team, but it goes both ways; there are heroes on either sides. I know there are many who have specially supported the idea of unity and respect since September 11th, but if you talk the talk, you have to walk the walk too. And this doesn't mean reject those who you hate and make friends with those you like, it means be a good citizen and help all of those in need of a helping hand. I had just finished fixing my 12 year old breakfast and sending him to school. I was getting ready for work when my brother called me. He told me to turn on my t.v. I sensed the panic in his voice. I saw on the phone when I what I saw was an accident in New York with the WTC. Then as me and my brother were still on the phone I saw the second plane fly into the other tower. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My whole body became numb. I can't even remember if I hung up the phone. I sat in my sofa just watching thinking this is all a bad dream. But as I surfed the t.v. channels, the reporters were all saying that this wasn't an accident these were acts of terrorists. I called my husband who worked in downtown Chicago and told him what had happened. He said that his company had just heard the news and that they heard that they were going to evacuate downtown Chicago just as a precaution. I left to work and stopped in at the corner gas station. There I asked the cashier if he heard any more news about WTC. He didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. I told him and he immediately turned on his radio. This is when we heard that the Pentagon got hit and that there was another plane in the air which they believed is hijacked just crashed in PA. We all looked at each other in disbelief. Suddenly, I felt so unsafe. I started to cry and so did alot of other people. We were in Chicago and couldn't help but think what was headed our way. People using planes and flying into buildings??? Who would have thought. I drove to work I needed to get some work done. It didn't happen I ended up listening to the radio in the car. That when I heard that the first WTC building had collapsed. I couldn't believe it. It was just so surreal. How could that huge building come down. As I drove on I heard the second buildiing collapsed as well. I was in complete tears at this point. I was at work and watched CNN the whole time. While at work, residents stopped in to see if I had heard any more news. We prayed together and hoped that this would be the end. We were so afraid, we thought it was the end of the world and this was the beginning of revelation. I watched day and night the news for the next few days to see if they heard of any more attacks. I'm just so mad that they used religion as an excuse for the senseless violence. The families who will never again see there loved ones. The children who will not see their parent(s) again. All the pain and hurt they have caused us all. I don't live in N.Y., VA. or PA. but I felt the hurt all the way in Chicago. In the following days I scheduled a blood drive at my apartment complex and had all the kids here draw pictures of flags, firemen, police officers and hung them with pride in our lobby. If I couldn't be there I figured at least my blood will help a few people who need it. I just hope that we can get over this enormous hurdle in life. The things that should be remembered about 9/11 are all the victim's families, rescue workers, doctors, nurses, volunteers, and the all the unsung heroes who helped with the tragic events on that day and the days that followed. None of my teachers told anyone really. I got picked up in 4th period witch was around 9:45. I just thought my sister was picking me up to go to the mall but what I didnt know was that the world trade centers has been attacked. So when i went down to my locker i was saw my sister and told her to come over and asked her why did she pick me up. She told me that the world trade centers have been attacked and there is still one air plane in the air. At first i thought she was kidding but then i looked at her face and she really wasnt. I was really shocked i didnt know what to do or say i just wanted to get out of school and be with my famliy and watch tv and see what was goin on. When i got home i went straight to the tv and turned it on and i see the first plane hit the tower and going up in flames. I remember that I was in 2nd period and I really didn`t know anything about it I was a little scared and I found out what happend and then I was like WHOA! this is serious bussiness! It scared me something fierce because to think that kids were going to come home to no mom or no dad etc. and it saddend me very badly because I knew that I was at school and I didn`t know what was going to happen because of it all. I wanted to tell my family how much I loved them and how I was sorry for everything I have ever done cruel to them and I will always love them! I knew my cousin Stephanie was leaving for the Air Force in a few short weeks and I didn`t want her to go what-so-ever because I didn`t know what they were going to do but it turns out she didn`t have to go over there she did the regular basics and stuff like that but I was sooo scared I didnt know what to think. Yes, I have become more open minded and at first I seemed that I couldn`t trust anyone and people that were foreign I actually would stare at and hate them because of the religion and beliefs ,but then I learned from my own stupidity that they were human just like me and it wasn`t there faults at all. I would never judge anyone by anything and I dont know what hit me and first because I am one of the kind never judges anyone people and the next thing I knew I hated every foreign person and I knew I was totally wrong for that and now I am always going to the mall and stuff like that and if someone looks at me and smiles I just smile back or pretty much whereever I am I just smile I never really thought about freedom until Sept.11 but I really am Proud to be an American. I think Americans and everyone else around the world should remember the firemen and women and the Priest that died there and all of the victims and there families and realize how great America really is because were closer than ever now and this day really brought our country closer together. I tried that whole week to wear RED WHITE AND BLUE. I think now that Sept.11th has happend I look at the world around me and I mean I always have but I have a passion to try stuff now because Sept.11th made me realize our world can change in a day and I remember when I got home on Sept.11th I just sat down and started writing poems because I love poetry and I was thinking to myself how well I could write my poems and I also decided how much I love my country. I live in England in the United Kingdom and I was sat watching the BBC news when they announced the first attack on the twin towers. I thought at first that it had been some sort of accident until the second plane arrived and I knew then that America was under attack. Then the news came on that the towers had collapsed and all those poor people dying in front of my eyes was horrifying. When I saw your president being told at that school I could see the fear in his eyes and my heart went out to him. When the Pentagon was hit I could not believe this was happening and then when the other plane came down in Pennsylvania I knew everything was true. My life has changed considerably because I feel more strongly towards defending our lives and freedom from terrorism. It has made me empathise with our allies in the United States of America. The sacrifice made by everyone involved in the rescues and some of them paying the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow man. I flew the Stars and Stripes until the last day of the 2001. My family also made Stars and Stripes ribbons which we sold to raise funds for victims of 911. On September 11th, 2001 I was out in a public Internet-Café as my sister came there to tell me that the World Trade Center had been attacked. The words she said were: "I asume you know that the towers have just been destroyed?". All I answered was a cool "Yes..." though I didn't know. I took a couple minutes until I realize what she was talking about. Immediately, I checked some news pages in the web in order to get some news. I couldn't believe that what my sister had told my was really true. I grabbed my stuff and ran back home to catch some live-pictures. I couldn't believe what I saw. My family was sitting in front of the TV watching the news. I called my friend who had been in New York and on top of the Towers a couple month before. It was a peculiar situation. I got goosebumbs everywhere and I though of all my friends in America. I tried to call some but that was impossible. My friend I had called told me that the host parents of his sister who was living near New York could not come home since they were asked to help in any way they could. Both are doctors. It was a perfect disaster, everyone was excited and disbelieving. It was an experience I never want to experience again. One of the most touching moment was as we were watching the news the the second Tower was collapsing and the moderator was sitting in front of such a blue box screen. You could see the Tower collapsing behind him but mor touching was the fact that he couldn't say anything. Whether politacally or socially both has its reasons and contributions in those attacks. We should learn that war is no way of preserving peace in the world. How can you pretend persuing the goal of global peace when you would take a weapon to achieve it? The most contradictory sentence is: "We are fighting for peace!"
