A phone call broke the "events" to me, told me, "Watch the news- wake up, go and see!" Fliping through the channels I realized, we're not untouchable. My mother called me about 8:15 am (central) and told me that the twin towers were on fire! I thought she was kidding,I was still half asleep. I grabbed the remote and turned on the tv...I could not believe it! From that moment on, for days I was glued to the tv, read the newspaper to find out if our world was falling apart! I did not sleep, I cried constantly, I did not even go out of my house. I was in shock, my heart breaking. This is the only event in my life that has effected,consumed and angered me so much that even the mention of it brings tears to my eyes. I logged off the internet a 5 am and settled into bed and the TV got on my nerves and I turned it off. The next thing I hear is my phone ringing my ex-boyfirend Mike was on the phone he said "my mom just called she said there was a explosion at the World Trade Center". I told him, "this is a sick joke you always call me with bad news". He said "turn on CNN my mom said they blew up one of the World Trade Towers in New York" none of us knew just yet it was a attack. I groped around glassesless and in the semi dark for my remote control and found it and turned on CNN. I live in Washington DC I told him get off the phone your mom will need to call you again. I tried and got onto the internet and MSNBC kept sending back server has reached copacity messages so I checked my e-mail and had a revelation I went to a here-to-be-unamed web site to listen to NYC police calls, I turned on Arlington City 'county' when the site got really slow and wouldn't load. I turned on the wrong button and recorded the whole thing leading up to the attacks on the Pentagon. I turned on channel 4 WRC I had to see our local news we live by a lot of government shit here, bases, proving grounds, all sorts of mess. I wanted to be told we were all going to die by our familier chjannel 4 news team. The news we watched after the Skins games as a family the one shouting from the TV downstairs I could hear but not understand. Then it happened the Pentagon got hit. Now Mikes mom works there by the helocopter pad was she out? A message came on our local news to clear the phone lines and to please prepare for futher reports. We may have to move we may be under threat here. Our cable co ran a alert for military members in the county to report to there units. My ISP shut us off the internet either that or I timed out I still can't tell. I waited a few minutes and tried the phone it just went "beep beep beep beep" fast busy it is called. My brother and his friends were outside and we waited watching the jets fly around so low you could read words/letters on them and hear the engines they must have been 500 to 1000 ft I swear I bet they were higher though??? The President came on the TV and things started to blur. I tried to play with my 3 year old neice and watch Nickeloden with her. I saw the second plane then I saw the collapse and I am sad to say so did she she got really quiet and asked me, "is this a movie?" I said, "yes lets watch blue" and went to put on blues clues on her TV. The president came back on TV from someplace in the mid west and I watched him say he was going to be back in Washington. I never would have beleved some time later we would be hearing a plane. We all started to scan around the whole neighbourhood came out of there houses to see what in the hell is this plane doing is it going to attack the Mall? We looked silly as the sound got louder. We scanned the sky like anti aircraft gunners spinning around and around waiting to fix on something moveing and man made. We thought which way to run? Where is it comeing from? Then it appered fast flying 1 jet about 2 or 3 minutes a formation we were amazed to see a big 747 (I think) in Airforce 1 livery and 3 jets on it's left (from the ground looking up) and one on it's right and some others in line abreast way out on the left and right then 2 jets following behind one close and one way behind like the first one we saw. I hated president Bush up untill he came on the TV and said were going to find out who did this and get them. When I saw air force 1 fly over and he was comeing home here to DC I almost cried right there and at that moment for better or worse he became The President and is President Bush to me now. He did all he could to get "home" to his city that was attacked. He also said he would find out who did this and get them. Sept 11 sucks in a word it only compares to watching Belgrade/Yugoslavia get flattened. I lost friends in both Belgrade/Yugoslavia and New York and this is the first time I had the courage to say how Sept 11 unfolded for me. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was busily and and worrylessly getting ready for another day of 8th grade. My dad, who was at the time watching the news, told me that an airplane had just crashed into one of the twin towers in New York. At first I figured that it was just an accident, and I was trying to remember which buildings were the twin towers. Then, my dad yelled from the other room that another plane had hit the other tower! All of the sudden it was like "Oh my gosh. We are under attack." That day everyone was talking about it, several of my teachers made comments about how silly it was that we were holding school on that day, and how school wouldn't be important after the war started. It was really scary, it was like this whole nation, its strength and its security, was completely shattered. Everyone was scared. I was leaving for work when I pulled out of my driveway and heard the terrible news of what had happened on the radio. At first, I couldn't believe my ears. I remember thinking they must have been playing back some sort of tribute to an event or possibly it wasn't even real. I listened a little closer to begin to understand that they were talking about the morning's events and immediately called my husband who was still at home. I told him to turn on the TV and find out what was going on. I was scared. I wanted to turn the car around and hold onto my husband. Yes, being from a younger generation it has always been difficult to fully understand such immense impacts like this one on history. This is one of the major events from my lifetime that I will talk with my own children about. I was doing my daily routine like i always did. I was sitting in 2nd hour, Civics class, and we were having work time when suddenly the principle came in and called Mr. Lavelle out of the room. He was gone for a few minutes, and when he came back in he explained the situation to us and turned on the T.V. so we could watch the news and hear the full story. I really didn't understand what had happened or even how seriouse the situation was, so to tell you the truth I really wasn't shocked at all. It was just really wierd. As i got up that morning as I always do to see the News. I was in shock. At frist I thought it was a joke or a move. But as I sat here in my in Tenn, and seen with my own two eyes that other plane go into the building I just could not beleave my eyes. I got on the phone to see if my son was ok he lives in New York. My heart go's out to all that lost there live that day and I pray that there family's are doing better now and that god will help each and every one of them. I know that god took them right away so that there was no time for them to fill pain. Again my heart go's out to them each and evey one. GOD BLESS YOU ALL TO DAY AND EVERY DAY. AMEN. And I was going to go out for my brithday that day. But i went to church to pray for us all. Most of the time on my brithday I have a drink but not on this one. When we walked into the class we saw both of the World Trade towers burning. After that we witnessed the aftermath of the attacks on the Pentagon. For several hours after that we heard only that one plane was unaccounted for. Shortly after We watched both towers crumble to the ground. Since September 11th I have become much more patriotic and I support our troops over seas and abroad. Since then i have also decided to join the United States Marine Corp. I beleive that the victims should be remembered along with the soldiers who died in the days after defending our country. When we got to third period, class went on until our teacher got an e-mail. Us kids bagan to talk. He said everybody be quiet the Trade Center has been bombed. I Personaly did not know what the trade center was until he showed us pictures of it. I knew it was in New York but thats about it. We wernt alowed to watch the News broadcast about it but we were told alot of information. I was in my car at the Greenbelt Metro parking lot, annoyed that I couldn't find a parking space so I could get to class on time. There was something strange just announced over the radio, something about a small plane crashing into one of the World Trade Center buildings. Of course I thought it was strange, but my mind was on getting to class on time. It was about 8:50 AM on September 11, 2001. I called my mom, who lived nearby and asked whether she could give me a ride to the Metro since I couldn't find a parking space. She said of course, but sounded distracted. So I drove to her house. I turned my radio back up, and listened. All of a sudden, they announced that another plane had crashed into the other tower at the WTC! What was going on? It couldn't be conincidental that two planes would accidently crash, could it? My mind reeled. As I was parking in front of my parents' house, I was no longer concentrating on the radio. The last words I remember hearing were "terrorist attack" and I jumped out of my car just as my mom came running out the door. My husband is an Arlington, VA Deputy Sheriff, and he was at work at the Arlington Courthouse when I heard the news. At this point, I had thought little about any danger in the Washington, DC area. However, as we watched the plane hit the second tower over and over on the news, the newscaster broke in with news of an explosion at the Pentagon. The first thing I said to my mother was "James (my husband) has to come home!" And her response was, "He's a police officer, he's not going to be allowed to come home." I think I lost it then, although what I remember was pushing redial every 15 seconds in an attempt to get through to his cell phone. As everyone else experienced that day, the call would not go through. There were too many other people trying to contact their loved ones, and I was no different. I didn't know where he was, or where he would be sent to for help, but I prayed that he was alright and that I would hear from him. The rest of the day is somewhat fuzzy. I remember reports of explosions at the Treasury and on Capitol Hill, and a fire was reported on the Mall. I got phone calls from my husband's parents wondering whether I had heard from him. I watched the towers come down in New York and wept with the millions of viewers around the world. At about 2:45 that afternoon, my husband called me. It was all I could do to keep from sobbing while I spoke to him. He was in a much more stressful situation than I was, and therefore I kept my composure while we spoke. He was at the Pentagon, and had been there since 10 minutes after the plane crashed, and he did not anticipate that he was coming home that night. The relief that he was alive and well was overwhelming, but I cried for those who had lost their loved ones. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has not changed in many ways, although I remember the day like it was yesterday. I still cry over those that were lost, and the relief I felt when my husband called me. I think I have become more paranoid that we are iminently going to be attacked again, but I think I share that trait with many others in the country. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think it is important to memorialize those that were lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11. We lost many wonderful people in this senseless act, and they should be remembered. The firefighters and police that responded to the call that day should also be remember for there heroicism, and for the lives they helped to save. I think it is also important to note the patriotism that has come about due to this event. More American flags are waving, and people have become more tolerant of the little things that used to annoy them. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? As my husband was involved in some of the rescue effort, he refuses to remove this symbol of our country. We are proud of the rescue workers who provided assistance on that day, and we want to show our pride in the citizens who live to help this country remain the "Land of the Free." I think that the heroicism shown by the rescue workers on September 11 proves that we are indeed "the home of the Brave." NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had just returned home from working the midnight shift. My wife and kids were still in bed sound asleep. I turned on the TV and immediately heard that one of the world Trade Center towers was on fire. I turned toward the TV and saw all of the smoke pouring from the upper floors. I began to wonder just how the emergency workers on the scene and still responding to the incident were feeling and trying to imagine what I would do if placed in the same situation. I am cross-trained as a Firefighter, Peace Officer, EMT, and Emergency Communications operator. This gave me a unique perspective of the entire situation. Not to mention being a Line Officer and wondering just how you would handle the incident command of a situation like this. As I continued to watch the incident unfold the camera panned over to a plane that was swiftly approaching the second tower. I thought to myself, "isn't it kind of strange for planes to be flying that close to the downtown area?" Just then the plane struck the second tower. I yelled out in disbelief as to what I had just witnessed. My wife came walking into the living room and asked about why I had yelled out. I told her about what had happened as she stood in front of me with the look of confusion in her eyes. I wondered how could this possibly be, that two planes on the same day could have gone off course and hit buildings that were side by side. As my wife and I continued to watch the focus of the report changed as another plane struck the pentagon building. My wife looked at me, now with terror in her eyes, and asked, "What is going on here?" I was in disbelief as to what we were watching. Our country was obviously under attack by someone that had no regards for human life. As we watched the towers fall to the ground I couldn't help but think of my fellow Emergency Workers who could not escape the terror of the collapse, and how their families must feel watching this happen. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001 started as a very normal day. I got my son up and he got ready for school and left for the bus. I turned on the local WGN news in Chicago as I did every morning. During the broadcast, they interrupted the story to say that a plane crashed into one of the towers at the World Trade Center. I had to wake up my two daughters to get them ready for school by that time. I went into their room and woke them and put on the television. I explained that there was a terrible accident in New York and that we should pray for anyone that was hurt. They looked at the television and asked if it was an accident or on purpose. I thought that was a strange question from a 9 and 7 year old. As I started to explain that it was probably an accident, we watched another jet crash into the next tower. I had to words to say. My kids were asking again if it was on purpose and I could only say that I didn't know. I turned off their television and called my husband at work and told him to find a television and turn on any national channel. Together we watched the replay over and over again. Our live will never be the same. I was expecting a baby and I was beside myself not knowing what was happening in our country...on our planet! When the jet went down in Pennsylvania and then Washington, D.C. I was so scared. That evening, in Mokena, Illinois, where we live, there was a loud explosion coming from the sky. My first instinct was to run to the back of my house to look towards Chicago. I expected to see a mushroom cloud rising from the city. It was a beautiful clear day. I could see the Sears Tower from my yard, almost 30 miles away...no mushroom cloud. Neighbors ran out onto their patios and porches asking what it was. I went to the front of the house where other neighbors gathered with my husband and we watched 4 fighter jets fly over our suburban town! The sound that we heard was a sonic boom from the jets. I hope to never have to hear them again. The questions from my children that followed in the next hours, days, months were very hard to answer. I write this entry on July 15, 2002 and they still ask why and I still cannot answer them. I tell them not to be afraid, that we live in the strongest, best country in the world and that we will be protected. Sometimes I feel like it's a lie. I fear when we go to public places. We have cancelled trips to the zoo that we have been going to all of our lives because of threats in the news. Traveling by air is totally out of the question. My children would be traumatized. They don't want to fly. Our president, George W. Bush, is doing a fine job. I believe that he will bring this to a close. I mourn for those lost on that day. I didn't know anyone personally, but as an American, I am personally affected. The days, weeks that followed, watching the people looking for their family and friends was heart wrenching. I have a friend who is a pilot in the Air Force. He said that they fight to keep the bad guys off of our front porches. God Bless our military. The risks and sacrifices will not go unrecognized or unappreciated. I love my Country. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was a 3rd grade teacher in Frisco, Texas, on September 11, 2001. I was actually in a workshop that morning and not with my students. I was also four months pregnant with my first child. Another pregnant teacher and I had just come back from a break when one of my co-workers met us outside the room and told us that something bad was going on. She told us that the WTC had been hit by two airplanes and that the pentagon had also been hit. I cannot explain exactly how I felt because I think I went into mild shock. My husband had been working in New York at One Liberty Plaza (directly across the street from the towers) six months earlier. He had lived at the Millenium Hilton, where I had stayed with him in the summer, and also at the Mariott World Trade Center, where I had also stayed. He had been laid off from the company who had staffed him in New York right after we had moved into our dream house. It was awful timing and we weren't too sure if we would be able to stay in our house. So I think that my initial feeling was one of utter relief. I remember thinking that I was now overjoyed that he had been laid off and that God has a plan and purpose for everything that happens in our lives. I called my husband, who also seemed in shock, and we told each other that we loved the other. I asked about his friends that he had worked with at Goldman Sachs and he said that he hadn't heard anything yet, but that he was trying. We went on with our workshop, although no one could actually concentrate on what was going on. I do remember looking at my other pregnant friend and uttering that we were now at war. Her response was that it didn't feel good to be bringing a child into this now very uncertain world. Like a disruptive student, I kept checking my cell phone since it could link to the world wide web. I was giving quiet updates to the other teachers around me. Finally they let us go back to our schools to be with our students. I returned to school and decided NOT to tell my students what had occurred. I felt that it was best that their parents tell them what was happening due to the fact that I didn't know if any of them had relatives or friends that could have been hurt. However, the next day, I brought in the Dallas Morning News and we discussed for almost two hours what had happened. The students were surprisingly mature and well informed, but I could tell that they did not grasp the gravity of our country's situation. But to be honest, I was somewhat glad that they didn't. Of course my life has changed greatly because of 9/11. I now pray every night next to my daughter's crib. I hug my husband and tell him to be careful every day that he leaves for work. I am scared to fly. I do not want my husband to travel anymore because I don't want him on a plane. Now that I am a mother, I don't want our country to go to war, although I am fully supportive of President Bush. The thought that anything can happen is always in the back of my mind, especially when we go to large events such as football games, concerts, etc. I cry easily when I hear about the children and families of those who lost someone. I question whether I would have been able to do what the people on Flight 93 did. I look at our pictures from New York more often. Ohio always seemed to be worlds away from New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania but that day all four states ran together in my mind. My daughter had only started kindergarten a few short weeks ago and we were settling into our routine nicely. I was getting her ready for school (it was picture day). She was all dressed in a blue velvet dress and we were beginning to do her hair when the phone rang. A friend and neighbor called me. She asked me if I was watching tv. I told her I was too busy trying to get Vicki ready for school. She told me that a plane crashed in to the twin towers. I thought it was tragic but I told her that something must have gone wrong with the plane or the pilot. I didn't realize how wrong I was until she screamed over the phone here comes another one it hit the other tower. I was startled. I turned on the tv. It was all over the tv. I woke my husband up (he works thrirds) and told him. He got up and came downstairs with me. We watched in amazement and disbelief. I remember the utter fear as I put my daughter on the bus. Then, all of a sudden, we all saw the second plane hit the second tower. We were all shocked, and we would have never thought anything like his would have happend. On that Tuesday as I walked into my second hour spanish class in Jenks High School in Oklahoma the first thing I can remember was scrambling to my backpack to cram for a vocabulary quiz that day. As I was caught up in my studying I was rudely interupted by a fellow classmate who ran into our class and turned the television on. As we all sat there awestruck by what we were witnessing the first thing that came to my mind was how many more attacks are there going to be and when will they stop. We never had that vocabulary quiz in spanish that day, I think we all realized at that moment the more important issues in life and how much of this world we take for granted. I was sitting at my desk in the Chase Plaza building, two blocks away from the World Trade Center, when I felt and heard the first explosion. I remember thinking that it was too sunny out for it to have been thunder (we had a bad storm last night). A few minutes later, several people came over to my desk and said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, and they tried to look out my window. All we could see out of the window was smoke and loads of papers flying all over. We went to our break room/pantry, and were standing around watching the news coverage of the first crash when the second plane hit. We felt the second explosion as we watched the second plane hit the other tower. That's when we realized this was no accident. We were told by our managers to leave the building. Once down in our office lobby, it looked like everyone else in the building had the same idea. Someone from the building's Fire Safety staff was announcing that our building was not being evacuated, that it was secure, and that they were encouraging people to return to their floors. The manager who had instructed us to leave our office said that was the dumbest announcement he ever heard. Three of us watched the smoke pouring out of the hole in the South Tower, and the full reality of it had yet to sink in. We stayed that way for a few more minutes, trying our cell phones in the hopes of calling family members to let them know we were okay, but cell phones were useless. So, I and one of our visitors from our Virginia office went down into the lower level of our building to find a pay phone, and to catch a subway train uptown. I was amazed by how orderly people were at the phone bank in our lower lobby. I was able to get my younger sister on the phone, and let her know that I was alright and on my way home. Fortunately, we were able to get a train fairly easily, and I had no problems catching a Queens-bound train at Times Square, so I was well on my way home and out of the area when the Towers collapsed. I was on the #7 Flushing-bound train near the Courthouse Square station when I learned that the first tower had collapsed. I didn't learn that the second tower had collapsed until after reaching the Woodside Station, when they discontinued all subway service in all directions. I somehow managed to get my local car service to come pick me up to take me the rest of the way home, and to get through to my mother on my cell phone. She wanted me to come to her house instead of going back to my apartment, and it was on the television in her livingroom where I first saw the news footage of the Towers collapsing. As I watched them collapsing, I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed significantly because of September 11, 2001. I feel as if I have been thrust into an almost entirely different life from the one I had been leading prior to September 11th. While I still live and work in the same places, my life is not the same. I was/am privileged and honored to become a part of a group of wonderful people who have since become known as "The Nuts on the Highway" at Point Thank You. Point Thank You, located at Christopher and West Streets in New York City, is where a group of dedicated volunteers gathered to show their support of Ground Zero workers, volunteers and victims' families and friends. In the midst of the tragedy, loss and destruction, it was an oasis of hope and goodness. During the eight months I spent at Point Thank You, I met some of the most incredible people I think I will ever meet in my life. It is hard to imagine how so much good could come out of such horrible tragedies, but it did. It did, and I consider myself truly fortunate to have experienced so much of it first-hand. I'm happy to say that "The Nuts" are still very active, and I am still experiencing that goodness to this day. I've also found myself doing things I never would have considered doing before, and re-evaluating my life. I've taken Critical Incident Stress Management debriefing training, so that I can be available as part of a Crisis Response Team should the need arise again in the future. I went rollerblading for the first time at the age of 38. I've started paying more attention to my health, and have started a diet and exercise program, in the hopes of losing a significant amount of weight. I've lost 40 pounds as of this writing. I've gained a lot of self-confidence, and have grown emotionally and spiritually. I've learned to cherish each and every day. I also feel that we've somehow been chosen to be a part of something larger, and that the events of September 11th are a beginning, a training ground of sorts for us. Like some others I've met over the past several months, along with my experiences comes a certain amount of alienation and isolation. Those of us who have been involved with Ground Zero share a special bond, yet we are also set apart from those in our "normal" lives. As supportive as they may be, there are issues and experiences that we're dealing with that those who haven't "been there" cannot understand. Often, our friends and families don't understand our continued involvement in the Ground Zero community and related events. However, for me, this is a small price to pay for being able to witness the outpouring of goodness that I have seen and experienced. For that I am truly grateful. I think the tragic loss of so many lives, along with the overwhelming amount of love and goodness that came out of that loss should be remembered. Those who dedicated so much of their lives to the rescue and recovery efforts should also be remembered and honored, be they firefighters, Emergency Medical Services personnel, law enforcement officers, Medical Examiners, DNA specialists, Sanitation workers, construction workers or volunteers.
