NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I'll never forget the sickening feeling I had when I first heard the news over the radio. I was driving on the LIE heading to work, almost immediatly I knew it was not an accident. My brother worked at Tower One on the 74th floor,so an overwhelming panic came upon me. I scrambled to call whomever I could to find my brother, all while still driving, crying and listening for further news. When news of more planes and crashes came through I just wanted to turn around and be with my family, thinking this is the end of the world. But I kept going to work. I hadn't heard from my family for what felt like an eternity. I felt as if I was in a dream, I watched the TV in the waiting room at work with the patients, all of us crying. Another friend at work hadn't heard from her father and cousin who worked in Tower Two. When my call came in that my brother went into work late that morning an overwhelming feeling of elation came over me, while at the same time greif and sorrow for the co-worker and thousands of others. I still wanted to be at home with my children and husband. My brother told me later that his daughter kept him up late the night before and he missed his usual train (he would have been sitting at his desk at the dreded time) Now I know that Guardian angels are out there. My brother missed the last bombing at Tower One in the '90's just because he felt like calling in sick that day. He did lose many co-workers and executives at his business that were at their desks. The thing I remember most about that morning is the fact that I was sitting on the couch at home watching a program on T.V. after I got the kids off to school and contemplating which room to start cleaning. I was complaining to my friend who was with me that I hated cleaning my 5 & 6 year olds rooms. All of a sudden my husband came rushing in from work and my very first thought is why is he home so early and who got hurt! So I was shocked when he told me that the nation was at war and to turn on the news which I did right away. When I saw all the footage i remember thinking oh my God! What can I do? I wanted to go get my kids from school and hold them tightand never let go. I sat down on the couch and cried for all the lost lives as we watched the # 2 tower come down. All i did after that is call the school to see if they were dismissing school early and was told that they were not unless they were ordered to by the board of education. We live in LaCrosse Wisconsin and I can tell you that evreyone in town here that day was in tears. I know that I prayed for the people in New York and the Pentigon and for those in Shanksville. I also prayed that those responsible would be caught and made to pay for their horrendous actions. I remember thinking what Can I do and the only thing I could think of is pray and give blood. My life has changed in so many ways. First and foremost My husband and I have become closer with our family. We charish our children more and always keep in mind that no matter what happens in our lives we need to always tell our children, family members and eachother how much they mean to us, no matter how mad we get at one another. Holding grudges for others past actions just makes our hearts bitter and it is better to forgive and tell that person that you love them no matter what, than have something horrifing happen and never be able to tell them at all. We have learned this and are teaching the boys this as well. I love our nation and I'm sure that everyone else in the USA does to! I thik that even though none of us will ever forget the terrifing pictures or our memories from that day or the weeks that followed that we should all remember that those who lost their lives that day did so with pride and love for our nation and a great deal of courage. We should remember that and always try to honor their memories. I also saw our nation pull together in such a profound way and help eachother through it. We should always remember that the strong cannot be defeated and we as a nation are strong. We should also remember to tell those close to us how much we care everyday. My feelings for the American flag have changed dramatically. I used to think of it as just another flag but it is indeed not just another flag and not only does it represent freedom and courage but strength and love and honor and pride for every person that has ever lived in this great nation or for those that will continue to come here to live after us. Each fiber of our flag represents every person that has lost their lives for us and our nation. We could not find a flag for a couple of months after the Septemeber 11th tragedy. When I first arrived in the city and didn't know my way around, I always looked for the twin towers as then I knew where South was. They were geographical markers that I grew rather fond of. My apartment was about half a mile from the Trade Center. When the first plane went over my building, so low, the window fan went backwards as the air was sucked up and I heard a tremendous noise. I watched the unfolding events from the roof, along with many others. One of my most vivid memories is hearing the almost choral sound of hundreds of people on nearby roofs gasping, groaning, crying and screaming as the buildings fell down. The following day I watched a single hearse driving up the Bowery, through the pervasive yellowish mist that had descended on Downtown. There were no other cars, and not many people. Just this single hearse with a coffin inside. I thought," How many others will there be in the coming days and weeks?". My life changed in that I left New York and am living back in London again. The events of 9/11 had a distinct bearing on that decision. Many of my friends lost their jobs as a direct result of the financial impact of the attacks and many moved away. I feel ashamed to admit it, but I couldn't feel the same way about the city afterwards. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That is was the dawn of a new , uncomfortable age. The world awoke to modern 'warfare' ie that wars are no longer about tanks rolling over another country's borders, but are about tribalism on a grand scale ,performed by the select, secretive few, to massive effect. As a Limey abroad, I did not feel anything in particular about the American flag. What did catch my eye however and seemed to say a great deal, was a young Hispanic girl in Bushwick, Brooklyn who had a pair of jeans on with the twin towers depicted on the pant legs in a kind of silvery dusty paint. We didn't have a T.V. it there but I heard about it in the halls after that class got let out. My friend Bradley said that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center Building. I couldn't remember right then what the buildings were, and I figured that the planes were just cargo planes or something. So I wasn't so worried. When I got to my next class, we listened to the radio the entire time as the event unfolded. I think that the scariest time was when they were saying that there were still a bunch of planes in the air unaccounted for that might possibly be hijacked. They were also saying that Houston was very a very likely next target- also, there was a rumor that a plane was going to hit the white house. My class after that was history and we watched CNN. And after that was Computer Science and our teacher let us surf the news sites on the internet to find out what had happened. My mom didn't feel like cooking, so we went out to dinner that night. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Well, what I can say first and foremost is that that day will surely live in infamy. It just felt like a regular, ordinary day where I would wake up, get dressed, have some breakfast, and then go to school. As I arrived at school, and as the day progressed in to about 2/8ths of the day, my high school principal got on the loud speaker and announced what had happened to the WTC. At first, and to be honest, I had no idea what those initials meant. As a matter of fact, I thought that the intials had no importance to me or even any other student, at all. I then asked a friend: "so what's the big deal all about?". Little did I know, the answer that came to me was America's heart of the economy. That moment I felt as if I was just stunned by Stone Cold himself. Later on in the day, I was informed more about the situation. Two planes, two planes, going into each of the towers?!...Unheard of. Numbers started coming up to my attention too, and they were very, very scary. Nearly over a thousand people died instantaneously. That whole entire day was simply a rush of fear and a rush of security. At home that day however, I tuned in to the television and saw images of it. Chills went down my spine constantly and feveriously. The plane going inside....no...crashing into a building, which is probably one of the tallest buildings in the world! Was it unbelievable? Yes, but in the sense of a wrongdoing or simply an act of pure sin. All I can say is that that day will always be a day of magnitudinal remembrance, and of reflection... NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Life has changed for me, not tremendously or not one bit, but is has changed for me. By just not dwelling upon the details of the day, whenever I come to think of 9/11, images flash through my mind of chaos and fatality. However I see that the country is stronger than ever before, and I'm not talking about the resources. I'm talking about the people, coming together with a great sense of unity and teamwork. Power in my mind, comes to me and I can feel the unity myself. This question comes to mind however. Was 9/11 a wake up call for America? I do believe so. There is no doubt in mind that the day itself, regardless of the killings(God Bless Their Souls), and the overall destruction, is a day that just made us, well, stronger. That is a good feeling. Actually, that is a great feeling and to be honest with you, I feel that way whenever I'm done reflecting upon the tragic event. I believe, not think, but believe that each and every person that helped out on that day, should be remembered and recognized. Everything else about that day should be remembered too. It was a long day that day and a lot of things went down, but the event a whole should be remembered, but the aftermath of it. That is the soothing part. Whenever I look at that flag, an overwhelming feeling comes over me. It's that feeling of toughness and chisel. The flag seems to have this appearance of "you do not wanna mess wit' me!". Realistically however, the flag is invincible. Quite frankly and honestly, I love the flag now. It is as if the flag went back to the drawing boards, got polished and the turnout was simply breath-taking! I am an expatriate living in Balikpapan, Indonesia, a country in Southeast asia made up of thousands of islands. Indonesia is the largest muslim country which put my family, my fiends, and I in a critical condition. My name is James Leask I am American along with my family and friends. When the attacks occured it was about 8:00 PM here because of the time difference. I didn't here about it until early the next morning when my dad was watching the early morning news like he usually does, only today he was standing up. I walked over and watched the TV and saw a giant bird fly into a building. Suddenly it exploded. The bird, of course, was the plane. The oil company my dad works for went onto a yellow alert meaning that all expatriate families should be ready to leave the country with only a single carry on and leave every thing else behind. I was running late to jury duty when I heard the first plane go over- I thought it was a sonic boom. People were standing on Centre Street pointing up towards WTC, which we could not see from that angle. We could see silver rectangles flying in the air- I realized it was paper. We thought it as a small two-seater, not a jet. It was only later when I trudged home past crying people and reached 16th street that I was able to turn around and finally see. And I began to scream. I found myself about a month ago onthe same corner in Chinatown and began to panic- I thought it would happen again. It was months before I would go on a subway. When I go near St.Paul's Chapel, I start to cry. For close to a year I could have sworn that I saw ghosts in my apartment and on the streets- people who were in the plane or the towers who didn't know they were dead and were trying to get home. I lit candles for tham and told them that they could rest. I felt them all the time. Every now and then I run into people- normal, non-crazy occult-disbelieving people who would never watch John Edwards- who say they saw and did the same thing. We were trying to send the dead to rest. If you don't live here, you may not understand what it's like to have almost 3000 of your neighbors disappear in 3 hours. I can tell you this- it's obscene. Wherever it happens it's obscene. G-d and I- I don't know. For a while we weren't on speaking terms. What could be said? And then I realized, 'It must be like this in Afghanistan, too. The Taliban is fucked up, Al-Qaeda is fucked up- but people are coming home to bombed houses and lighting candles to help the ghosts get home.'And that's when I started talking to G-d and asking him to stop us from killing each other. Not for the sake of our leaders or our national pride, but so that no one else has to smell rotting bodies or light candles for the dead. That while we cannot reason with fanatics, they are not the only fanatics out there. Islam says it's wrong to kill innocents. So does Judaism and Christianity. This all made me realize what a New Yorker I am. I love the American flag. I actually have a copy of the Constitution and the Declaration on my desk. But the flag is in my heart every day, even before last year. My parents put it there when they told me about the Civil Rights Movement and how they had to fight to be seen as people. Wearing a flag or waving one won't make me more of an American; my family goes back on both sides to native Americans, some of the first slaves who came to these shores, and their Scots-Irish masters. One of my ancestors remembered the Emancipation. People who hang flags- do they know what it really means to be an American? Do they vote? Do they sit on juries? do they read history? This is how we show we are Americans. We are Americans because we give peoople a fair chance for a decent living. Because we don't judge people by religion or country of origin. Our principal came running into the room and told us to turn the TV on to the news. When we turned the TV on, we were horrified by what was happening. Every summer I fly from Massachusetts to Washington and it is the craziest thing trying to get through security and all of the metal detectors without missing your flight. It has limited what you can bring on a plane. It also stopped both of my parents from seeing onto the plane. When I leave my father's house, my step-mom has to stay in the waiting area while my dad takes me to the gate. My life also changed when I tried to get a new social security card. I was born in Germany and that's what the person saw on my birth certificate, so they put "unable to work without INS authorization". I had to get another card. if they left that I would have trouble getting jobs and getting into college. The attack stopped our class trip to New York for almost 2 years afterward, and it didn't feel the same when we went. I also have friends that are in either the ARMY or AIR FORCE and they had to move or go over seas because of the fighting. Let me tell you that I am a foreigner my family and me were on vacation on Orlando Florida, that day I got up early and went to a Big K store to buy candy and small thing to bring as presents, When I was passing by the electronics all were showing the first tower struck by the airplane. Being a tourist the only thing I could possibly imagine was that it was a new movie. Suddenly, I saw when the second airplane hit the tower and then came concious that those were the twin towers and it was not a Movie, I took my wife and headed back to the resort and at this time the theme parks were ordered to leave and witnessed the terror on the peoples faces and the cars rushing by the I4,then the radio swiched to emergency broadcast, and I tough that we were in the middle of a WWIII. Then the malls were ordered to close and all people were in the hotels, and we were glued to the TV sets waiting for instructions, suddenly the telephone rang and we were invited to the lobby to coffe and Donuts!!. A week after we made it back to my home country, I do not have nothing but praise to the good american people that help us, let us stay on the hotel for free, this fine gentleman from American Airlines without his help we might as well be still stranded in MIAMI international. As I entered the building I met up with my friend. At once she started telling of a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. To tell you the truth I didn't know what the Twin Towers in New York was. So I just brushed off what she said, and started paying attention in my class. After this class, i walked out and started talking to my friends. Every once in a while i would hear a comment about a plane hitting a building in New York. I still thought nothing of this. At my next class, the realization of what was going on became more clear. This was serious. All through class we watched the news on TV. A terrorists attack on our nation? There was so much that I didn't understand, and so much I wanted to learn. Then we learned of a second plane hitting the second tower. Then it was said on the news, that another plane that was hijacked was still in the air, and unknown was its destination. On the morning of september 11th 2001 i was in High school in manassas virginia just outside of Washington dc. When the news came through the intercom at school about the twn towers it almost seemed unreal, noone could actually believe what happened. Then they came on again and said that the pentagon had been hit, which then took me to the concern of my father who works in D.C. After school was out trying to call him was impossible, the wireless phone lines were unaccesable. I didnt know he was okay untill he reached home NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life hasnt changed a great deal other than i take life more seriously and realize that terrorist attacks are inevitable and the U.S. isnt as powerfull as most of us feel it is. Life could be short and you never know when it will end, so take every minuits seriously. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that america should remember to not take everythign for granted and realize that we arent at the top of the world. Also, that if someone wanted they could destroy us at anytime. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, i have had american flag in front of my house since sepetember 11th. Actually our community of 40 something houses intalled falg holder for small flags on all the mailboxes, since flags have never came down and show are patriotism everyday, the flags also remind us about that time.
