NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had always been fascinated by the World Trade Center since I was a little boy. I would build models of it with my Lego blocks, would collect pictures and newspaper clippings about it, and had the opportunity to visit the observation deck twice. I worked in a building about 15 blocks from the WTC. I had an awesome view of the towers from my office, and would often look at them or go onto the roof of my building and take photos of them. Many a lunch hour was spent sitting in the plaza between the towers, marveling at the complex while eating my lunch. One of the things that stays with me most from September 11th is the fact that it was a picture perfect day in NYC. There wasn't a cloud in the beautiful blue sky. I was running a few minutes late (as usual) to work that morning, arriving at Penn Station via the Long Island Railroad at around 8:50am. With my Walkman blasting in my ears, I hopped on the #9 train downtown. The subway was moving really slow; I thought nothing of it. But I did notice an added police presence on the subway platform, and had noticed there was a TV reporter standing next to me on the subway. Something was wrong. At around 9:05 at Christopher Street, the TV reporter had gotten off, and I figured I should get off also and walk the rest of the way to my office since the subway was still moving at a snail's pace. I also could get the scoop on what was happening by following the TV reporter. As soon as I ascended the stairs of the subway station onto street level, I saw what was wrong. In the distance, about a quarter of a mile away, the WTC was on fire. It was an image I'll never forget as long as I live. You could've knocked me over with a feather; my jaw must've been on the ground. It was an oddly colorful scene; the bright white of the towers offset by the clear blue sky, black smoke trailing behind, orange flames of fire throughout the upper floors. I recall my first instinct was to buy a disposable camera and start taking pictures, but I didn't have a penny on me. I surveyed the damage, and actually said to myself that either Godzilla was loose in the city and had taken a bite out of the North Tower or that a plane had crashed into the building. I assumed that the plane must've hit the North Tower accidentally at an odd angle and somehow deflected into the South Tower, causing the damage there. I approached a group of people talking about what happened and finally took off my headphones, and got the true story. Two planes had crashed, one into each tower--a deliberate terrorist attack. I had missed witnessing the 2nd planes impact by seconds. I put my Walkman back on and was listening to news radio to get more info on the attack. Scores of ambulances and police vehicles sped past me, sirens blaring. People in cars were parked with windows/doors opened, surrounded by people who listened in for radio reports. I watched until about 9:45, then decided to get to my office. I knew I had a pretty good excuse for being late to work, but even this was pushing it. I got to my office about 10 minutes later. I chatted with a friend who had witnessed the 2nd plane's impact and he was pretty upset. I tried to call my wife, my mother, and my sister (who was on a plane flying from Florida to NY at that very moment) to no avail, neither my cell phone nor office phone was working. I unsuccessfully tried to access the Internet for more info on the attacks. The was no way in or out of NYC at this time, all subways, trains, bridges, and tunnels were closed. As I was walking to the southern-facing offices for a peek, I heard a collective scream from my co-workers. I sprinted down the hall and looked out the window and saw a huge wall of dust envelop the South Tower. It had apparently collapsed. Never for one second during the day did I thought the towers would collapse. I recall wondering how odd the towers would look with the burn marks and damage once the fires were put out. I wondered if they would set up scaffolding around the buildings while they were repairing them. And even after the collapse of the South Tower, I imagined that it was probably only the top of the building that fell--no way could the whole tower be gone! Not thinking clearly, I suspected that a bomb had been planted in the building beforehand, and the flames from the plane fuel had ignited it and caused a huge explosion that leveled the tower. Even then, I thought that lower Manhattan would look weird from now on with only one Trade Center tower standing. From that moment on, I tried not to take my eyes off of the North Tower. It finally dawned on me that if one tower had collapsed, that the other one would follow suit. But when news that the Pentagon was on fire and probably hit by another plane, I assumed that all USA landmarks were under attack. I looked at the Statue of Liberty and wondered if I would be witness to her destruction by a plane. I was amazed by the throng of humanity that was walking northward, away from the WTC site, via the West Side Highway; it seemed like hundreds of thousands of people. I talked with co-workers while watching the North Tower burn. From my vantage point, I could see the reddish-orange flames seemingly move left to right, from office to office, floor to floor. At that time, the tower began to crumble downward. I recall paying close attention to the huge antenna on top of the roof, and how it seemed to drop straight down. I said the time aloud, 10:28. Oddly, I never thought about the death toll until then. I had selfishly taken an inventory in my head and was relieved that I didn't know anyone who worked in the towers. I imagined that the people/hijackers on the planes were dead, as well as whoever was in the buildings at the point of impact. I hoped that many of them were late to work, as I was that morning. But I never thought of the rescue workers, police or firemen until that moment. I walked to my boss' office, and told her that I was in no shape to work after what I had just witnessed. The president of my company assembled the troops and told us we could leave work and take the next day off and be back on Thursday, and that there would be grief counselors to talk to then. I was able for the first time to call out and get in touch with my mother; it turns out I was the last one in the family who had been accounted for and she was quite relieved. She knew I worked near the WTC but not sure how close. So at around 11:20, I left my building for the long walk north to Penn Station. I refused to look toward ground zero; I didn't want to see the debris from the destruction of my favorite buildings. My friend and I were discussing how this was so much worse of an event than Pearl Harbor. It was also the only time I was afraid--would another hijacked plane kill me while I was standing next to another target in NYC? I got to Penn Station, which was locked down, at 12:15. I was finally able to get a cell phone call to my wife and tell her I was OK but nowhere near coming home yet. I walked around Penn Station/Madison Square Garden, and then was able to get some money from an ATM, because I figured I might have to sleep in a hotel or something if the city was still locked down. I sat on a sidewalk and ate my lunch while military fighter jets buzzed above us. The space in front of Penn Station on he 7th Avenue side was like human gridlock, I can only imagine this was what New Year's Eve in Times Square was like. I started to see people filing into Penn Station at around 2pm. I quickly joined them and boarded a train back to Long Island. The train was so overcrowded, much like the Japanese subways (where they hire people to push as many people onto the trains as possible). I was packed in so tight I could barely breathe, but I was happy to be leaving Manhattan. Some of the people around me had dust and debris all over their clothes; you could tell they were near the towers when they fell. The train slowly headed east, and it turns out I arrived home at around 3:15 or so. I received so many phone calls that day, from people who knew I worked near the WTC who were wondering if I was OK. I began watching the TV coverage, I was amazed to see the footage of the planes hitting the towers and the collapses from other angles than the vantage point I had that morning. I popped in a blank videotape and began taping the television coverage nonstop. That night, I obviously couldn't sleep and had major nightmares about what I had seen. Although my office building was just outside of the major debris range, the streets were closed so emergency and recovery vehicles could have total access. I didnt return to work until the following Monday, the 17th. You could smell the smoke from the still-burning fires, and notice a hint of the dust cloud on windows from the towers collapses. I got an uneasy feeling whenever I would walk into an office that used to face south. And to this day, about two and a half years later, I think about 9/11 and the day's event s almost constantly. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. i woke up that morning to a beautiful clear day in yellow springs, ohio. It was between second and third period and someone came up to me in the hallway and said "they blew up the world trade center". who did i asked, there was no answer. at this time it was about ten till ten a.m. and imediately i went upstairs to my algebra class where a group of students was already watching CNN. We sat in silence for 45 minutes that class. I watched, eyes wide open, as the second plane hit. I felt a wave of sadness and helplessness as the camera crews zoomed in on the buring buildings, and the hopeless people jumping from the hundreth floor of the towers. I remember my whole body was in shock. the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end like saluting soldiers. and then the bulidings fell. I have watched movies with building blowing up and people dying, but i have never really seen such a horrific event, even if it was only from a tv screen in a sleepy town in ohio. I felt a tear stream down my face, and then another. All i could do was sit and watch...i have never felt so alone in my life. For starters i have given up on "God". i was never really a religious person, but i never doubted that there was something higher up there, looking down and sort of watching over. I don't think that anymore. I also began to look into forigen affairs. I began to investigate the United States involvement in other countries and in general furthered my studies of Middle Eastern culture. to me it seems that the only way to find a little comfort is to realize that so many others feel the same pain. I found that my personality changed a little. I made a solid effort to be more patiant and kind to others. i now have a profound appreciation for human nature, which before this i had little faith in. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? i think that what should be remebered is the perserverence of the human spirit. Even in the midst of so much tragedy, people came together to find solice and healing. I remember listening to a news report about a small town in New Foundland, where all the existing planes were rerouted to. The kindness of this little town is truly touching. The people there were not americans and yet they were just as willing to help. I think that while we should remember our heros on the homefront, we should also remember that the rest of the world also lent support. i think what i will remember most will footage of people just walking the Brooklyn bridge. I am a volunteer Tn State Guard military personel and I took this as my housemate pulling a joke on me. She said no! that she was not joking, so I got up and turned on the TV. I turned the TV on the channel I usually watch and what I saw, I had thought that I was watching a movie not thinking about what time of day it was; I work 3rd shift and therefore did not realize it was still morning. I honestly thought that I was seeing a movie so I changed the TV channel and there I saw the same thing!What I saw was the 2nd plane hitting the building but I still wasn't sure so I changed the TV channel to the 3rd channel. I could not believe what I was seeing!!!! I was stunned!!! Then the 3rd plane, and then the 4th! Then, as a military person, I really started to get worried! Thinking the crash was just a complete accident, I didn't worry at all. I did not know what was going on until I walked into the student center after class. The place was crammed with students staring at the TVs mounted on the walls. People were crying and hugging. I will never forget the feeling of panick and sadness that came over me. It was period B at Eastern Lebanon County High School. We had already started class, when another teacher came in and told us the sorrowful news. At first I had no idea that this action was done on purpose, or as a terrorist attack. It was not until the second and third planes hit their targets, that I, and the rest of my school, realized the true nature of these "accidents." We had just come out of a staff meeting and noticed the "breaking news" story of the World Trade Center on fire. As we watched TV the second plane hit and we were devastated. Our attention was immediately drawn to our Air Force Colonel who said something hit the Pentagon. He made a phone call and you could see his face brace for "battle". He said everyone "get out now"; don't worrry about your cover, (telling the military not worry about there hats), just get out. We "briskly" walked out of the Pentagon using our normal evaluation route. When we got outside, we could see black smoke bellowing from the other side of Pentagon. Our Colonel kept us all together but briskly kept us moving away from the Pentagon. On the way, we saw a Navy enlisted man and woman with blood on them. One of our co-workers went to get medical help for them. Then we were told to "move back-take cover" there's another plane coming. We took cover behind trees. Thank God it was our fighter jets overhead. We finally got to Lyndon Johnson Park and a man had his car radio on and we heard the first World Trade Center collapsed. We finally orchestrated how everyone was going to get home. I got to my in-laws house and tried to calm down. I couldn't call my Mom in Ohio because there was cellphone "gridlock". She finally got word that I was not hurt and A-ok. I went to work the next day, September 12th because by gosh the President said the government is open and I was not going to let the "terrorist" win. It wasn't until a week later that I was notified two of my co-workers were killed. It's a day I'll never forget...Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my story. When i heard about the airplanes hitting the Twin Towers, I was getting ready for school. I was makin gmy lunch when my grandfather was telling everyone to come in his room to see what had happened. Once I walked into the room I say the footage of the first plane hitting a tower. I was in shock. I couldn't believe what had happened. Then when I was at school, I heard about the second plane hitting the other tower. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. At first i didn't know what was going on, I just thought a plane had lost control or something. Later I found out it was a terrorist attack. I am just very grateful for all of the firefighters and police officers who risked their own lives to safe the lives of complete strangers. Also all of the police officers and firefighters should be remembered too because they didn't have to risk their own lives for others but they did. They were very helpful. My computer was connected to the internet via the phone line unknown to me while I slept in quite late. I worked second shift and didn't have to go in until 4pm. I had stayed home on monday because I felt ill but I was going to go to work that day. I live far from NYC but only miles from Somerset County, PA. Anyway, my mother was scared that she couldn't contact me because my computer. I woke up to the sound of her knocking on my apartment door. I groggily opened the door to find her frightened face and I was instantly awake. "Have you seen what's happened?" It was about 12pm when she came.. She sat on my couch and told me to turn on the television. I did and what I saw was so beyond my fathoming that I was in denial but those images could not be reckoned with. I saw a world in panic and I got mad. But most of all, as I watched people jump from the towers, I was sad. I was more than sad, I was depressed. I was every emotion I knew but I hadn't cried yet. "I called your work and they said that they tried to call you but your line was busy," mom said. "Your supervisor said not to come in and that everyone was going home because what's happened." Where I work was a risk in itself. I work on the 3rd floor of the 'Administration' building. It's leased space for a document conversion company. The space was provided by U. S. Navy/ Military. A Tactical Systems Company where they manufacture rocket motors is hardly the place to be on such a day of terror and a risk to national security. I didn't go in that day. They also heard that a plane was on its way to the plant. Little did they know at the time that it would never make it there but had it been in the air a few minutes more, there would have been a lot more to clean up. I spent that afternoon with my mother as she wanted me near her to know that I was alright. God bless her. I did stay with her at her apartment for a while. Her friend was there and we were talking about it. The day was already consumed by tradgedy. My friend Missy and another friend, Lidnsay were coming back from college. They had to watch the morning unfold during class and they both had said they worried about me going to work. Lindsay's father also worked at the 'compound' but he worked for the Navy and had a best friend at the pentagon. Lindsay's father had the day off, I believe. Missy picked me up at my mother's and that was when I cried; sobbed. I can and will always choke up when I remember that day or see the images and realize the loss. We went to Lindsay's place where we watched the day unfold in disbelief no matter how many times we saw the footage. Later that night, Lindsay and I went to Missy's home where we made a video commentary/ montage of the day's events. Jimi Hendrix just seemed appropriate as background music to the montage. It is truly a sight to see even if all we did was film the television and turn on the stereo. I was always a patriot at heart. I remember being a very little girl and feeling like I wanted to cry from pride everytime I hear as strong solitary voice singing the Star Spangled Banner. While life in the country seems to go back to 'normal,' it will never be as it was. A new sort of complacency will evolve just as those who live with terrorism learn to live with bombings daily. I hope we never have to live with that but the way things happened was such a shock that it has made us better aware of everything. As a country we have never had to look out for trouble like we do now. That is different. My life has changed in the respect that I am more opinionated about politics and more aware of the extent that politicians are willing to go to make our country safe. What bothers me is that we cannot make miracles and to think that we can prevent every attack on our homeland is bull headed. Never get bull headed but be optimistic. The middle east, I beleive, never sees us as being a humble nation. They saw us brought to our knees on that day but we got right back up. It is my hope that our international policy is to appear more humble because any other way would be appear to be bullying. There will never be a way to please everyone all of the time but it is important to take dangerous weapons from these people. There will always be a nation who hates us and there will always be wars for one reason or another and the reason we get into wars, ironically, is to reach that ever elusive utopia. Airport security is more important than ever; harbors are protected; government facilities are on constant alert. And some believe that if we just kill a few people who want to kill us will make everything alright. They want to drop leaflets on the country which wants us dead but what do the leaflets say? A part of me felt that I didn't before that day and didn't feel I should because I might be hypocritical. Another reason is that I was totally amazed at everyone else's flag frenzy. But the flag became a flag again and not just a symbol that meant 'America' the country. It became America, the land of liberties. I guess I was just too humbled. I was in my classroom 2nd period and we were watching Channel One, a show that tells whats happening around the world, and all of a sudden two planes crash into the twin towers. Me and my classmates were just stunned we couldnt beleive it no-one said a word. We all just sat there watching the television. Some of us went on with our day and ascted liek nothing happended, but in reality we all new what had happened. It was very emotional for many of us. I was in Russia, in a town called Temruk roughly 1500km south of Moscow on September 11. This day will always remain vivid in my mind. I met a lady via internet dating and was a guest at her home on this day. We were chatting when suddenly this lady's daughter rushed into the room and said to her mom, America is at war. She turned to me and repeated in english, "America's at war!" I was as they were, stunned and shocked, and just a tad nervous as I was in Russia and did not know who America was at war with. There was a tv that was not connected to an antennea so I set to work and was able to make a connection that worked. Looking on in complete disblief, we watched over and over as the Russian news showed footage of the unfolding events. Not a word was said as we were all transfixed by the utter disaster we were witnessing. It was confusing as I pleaded for details as I do not speak Russian. My first words were....it looks like the work of terrorists, specifically I said bin Laden. What impressed me the most about this day, aside from the tragic events, was the reaction of the common people in Russia. Shock and disblief, but most of all sorrow for the American people caught up in this tragedy, as well as anger towards the perpetrators of this henious act. These emotions were expressed to me on several occasions. I had limited access to the internet, but was able to communicate home (Canada) twice and was starved for information. Yes the plane ride home at the end of September was filled with worry the entire trip. But I made it back safely, and was never so relieved to see the CN tower upon my arrival in Toronto. Canada was victimized on that day as well,a young man close to our town was lost that day as well as other Canadians. He appeared to be staring at the TV, so I automatically turned to the TV and that was when I had figured out that a plane had crashed into one of the world trade towers. Other students had arrived only to join the rest of the classroom in staring at the TV. Half the school day was spent watching what had happened, being further updated on what was happening. When I woke up I saw my 14 year old sister doing laundery. I asked why the TV was on so loud. She then told me that there was a plane that had crashed into the WTC building. I was thinking that it wasn't a big deal that they was probably a mistake or an old building that was flew into. I went to where the TV was on and watched the replay of the first crash and then watched the second crash, the pentagon get hit, and the plane that landed in PA. I had to work that day and I work as a airline reservation agent. For us that day was actually moderate to slow. Only the next day when everyone started to call and cancel their flights did the call volume went skyrocketing to over 300 calls on hold. I would have loved to help but I couldn't because I had taken a Vaction Day and would be geting myself in trouble if I did decide to work instead. If so, tell us how. My life has changed since September 11. I know now that America is not the way it used to be. I know have to deal with airport restrictions, airlines going up and down in finances, and air travel in general. What I think should be remembered on September 11 is the heros for the heroric deed they did that day. For the police and the fireman could've not saved anyone and not risk going into the burning buildings and could've stayed outside. If they had did that then they would be a lot more casulties then. But they were trained to do their job description as to help, serve and protect the people. They did that. Also, to remember those that gave their lives on the planes that crashed. They tried their best to minimaze the sitution as much as possible. So we should remember the firefighters, police man, airline crew and passengers and anyone who tried to defeat the terriosts attacks. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I woke up in my bed and the television was on. I saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. I wondered to my self that I had not heard or seen any thing about a movie that showed such a terrible event like that. As the announcer started talking I realized that it really happened. I watched the story unfold and prayed that they would find more survivors. I thought that something like that would never happen after the end of the,"Cold War." God Bless Them All. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My Wife had died on 8/10/01 and I still was mourning her on that day. The full enormity of the tragedy did not hit me until the first anniversary as I watched the memorial ceremonies. I am still hoping that the people responsible for this act will find the punishment they deserve for killing so many innocent people. I live in an apartment and I can not fly a flag but I have stickers of the flag all around me. I still love the flag and what it still stands for,: "The Land Of The Free And The Home Of The Brave." NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was on a flight enroute from Tampa FL to Charlotte NC when the hijackings took place. We landed and I had made it to downtown to my office before I knew anything. We watched the events unfold on a TV in our office. We were sent home which to me was a hotel in Charlotte. No restaurants were open and I had to deal with the events alone. I rented a car and 2 others from Florida shared the car with me and we drove home on Thursday. I was getting married on Sept 29th and it had little or no affect on those traveling in to participate in our wedding. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I fly every week and my life is certainly affected by security at the nation's airports. It affected our honeymoon plans by changing them from Paris to a cruise. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That this country had better refocus its attention back to God. We were punished on 9/11 for our rejection of God. To make matters worse we turn around and make the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because it has the word "God" in it within the year. I was taking my little girl to school when i heard what happened on the local radio station. I was like nah uh i thought it was a joke. I dropped of my daughter at school, and then rushed home and turned on CNN. I screamed at my husband to wake up and at that very moment when my husband reached the living room where i was standing, that is when the 2 plane hit. I could not beleive my eyes I was 22 years old on 9-11 of that year and it still in lodged in my memory forever. GOD BLESS THE FAMILIES AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.. I am grateful to be in this country with it's up's and down's. But i fly my flag a little bit higher and stronger than i ever have since september 11.
