NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was 7:45 am in Harlingen Texas. I had just dropped off my two kids at daycare and was traveling to my job which was about 15 miles away. Coming over the over pass to head east, I hear the morning DJ's say something about a "plane crashed.. like Hollywood movie.. this isn't real" Half way listening to these two, I come across an accident on the other side of the road. It was huge. Cars piled everywhere, apparently people in a rush to get somewhere I say to myself. Carefully making my way thru, I still hear the DJ's and again, I hear "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center tower at approximatley 8:45am EST. We dont know any more details but .. this is unreal... we will keep you updated as details come in." I think Oh My God, what is going on? I quickly think that I should go home to be with my kids.. skip work and just go home. I keep trudging to work, getting there as fast as I can to share the news with my husband who works for the same company as I do, Hunter Douglas. I walk in and eveyrone in the warehouse is listening to the Radio. One of the workers asks our boss if he can run home to get a TV so we can see what was going on.. since the events going on pretty much halted distribution fot the day. I go to my office up front and try to get work done.. but my ears are glued to the radio. The worker comes in just after a few minutes and hooks up the TV. The small distribution center is glued to the small 17" color TV. No sooner did he hook it up, we see what we thought were moving images of the first plane.. We quickly figured out we were watching live as the second plane came in and hit the second tower. The room was quiet. I cried out and screamed.. "OH MY GOD!" There in the room, mostly men watched helplessly as the tower burst into flames right in front of us. This was poiniant because our main office was set in New Jersey. Our CEO's and President's had homes in Manhattan. After realizing this my boss made frantic phone calls.. as expected.. calls were jammed in the eastern sea board. We called our production facility in Gilbert, AZ and come to find out.. they were there. They were to take a flight out that afternoon back to NY. They were now stranded. We later found they just rented a car and took a nice drive back. We watched as events unfolded, and work that day was pretty much non exsistent. I left a couple hours early that day and I came home to be with my kids. My husband followed closely behind. A couple months down the road, we were reviewing some documents from an Audit we recently had. Going over the numbers with my husband at home, I came across a paper that brought me to tears, and stopped me in my tracks with a look of shock. What I was reading was an invoice with dollar amounts and final readings from our audit. What was at the top of the paper read - World Trade Center Tower 1, Floor 96. I was not going to stop my life because some idiots wanted to hurt me and others because of the way I lived. On October 5, 2001; I took a flight from where I live to Denver, Co. The security was nothing like I had ever seen before,but it was amazing how quiet, and subdued people were. You could almost hear a pin drop in the airports. People were silent and noone spoke waiting in line to get their tickets. We were afraid to look at one another. But I flew, and my trip was great. I later found out that I was pregnant. He was due September 3 of 2002. Well, he came late. He was born on September 11, 2002. I watched that day on the one year anniversary of the years events, as they were saying names of the people who perished. They were on the 'G' last names. My son, Aidan William was born. He brought us joy, and a realization that life does go on. His first baby pictures taken in the hospital, show him wearing an outfit with a little bear on his left side holding an American Flag that says BORN IN THE USA. His first birthday is coming up. And while others will be holding a candlelight vigil, the only caldle in my house that will be lit will be a Birthday one. And celebration for a child who brought us so much joy in our lives. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? This day could have been ANY day. It could have been on Christmas day, it could have been on May 17 (my birthday)... but the fact remans that September 11 was a day like any other. People were born on that day, and before the Attacks on New York and the Pentagon and Philidelphia, there were others who died on that day as well. This day will remain poiniant to us becaue it hit everyone on a global level, but we shouldn't forget those who lost their lives.. ever. But remember that life does go on. The world is still spinning, and good things come out of great tragedies. Weither it happens right away, or years from now. There IS a silver lining. I am very patriotic and have always flown my flag proir to the events of Sept 11. I fly it now because of the events; my brother is serving in the Army in Afghanistan. The flag will have special meaning because of his sacrifices and to those who were recently killed because of it. I just wait for him to come home. I was in the health room with Ms. Feusner when Mr. Sherman ( the principal) annoces that the Twin Towers and the Pentogn have been hit. Once everyone in school heard the news the whole school stood up in their classrooms and said " The Pledge of Alegence." After the Pledge of Alegence we all had a moment of silence to remember and bless the families and people who were hurt or had somone missing. I think that the people who were hurt, killed or even the families who had someone missing or someone who died in the twin towers or the Pentogon should be the people remembered because that could have been you or me on 9/11 just going to work and doing your job when a plane hits and most of your friends who worked with you die because they just couldn't get out of the building fast enough. That's why the people who had someone missing or had a love one die should be the people rememberd from this tragic day on 9/11. Having just arrived 2 days prior at my new duty station at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, my wife, son and I got ready at our hotel, then made our way over to the Schiappa's restaurant next door for breakfast. Upon entering, we noticed that there was not a single occupied table in the main dining area. As we took our seats and prepared to order, a waitress came over to our table. When I causally asked why business was so slow that day, she gawked unbelievingly at me and said "...haven't you seen the news? A plane hit the World Trade Center! Everyone's in the bar watching the big screen TV." We immediately abandoned our table and went to the bar area. Sure enough the image of smoke pouring out of the hole in the tower was there. The news anchors and reporters at the scene were all talking about a small plane hitting the tower and it was probably someone in a Cessna, or something. Due to my position in the U.S. Army, and just coming from duty in Germany, I had the lowdown on terrorist groups due to their close proximity to our bases in Europe. I turned to my wife and said, "...this wasn't an accident." Sadly, before leaving the restaurant, we saw on live television, the second plane hit the other tower. My suspicions were confirmed,...and I guessed (correctly, it turns out) that it was Al'Qaida who were responsible. Never in my life have I ever wanted to retaliate so badly against someone. The anger I felt against these Hypocrites of Islam was immense. I believe myself to be a very tolerant person, but to see religion used, just as it was in the Crusades, to justify attacking and destroying innocents, made my blood boil. I have to admit, that I had always suspected that someone or some group would try to destroy the WTC, because the first attempt in 1993 was unsuccessful, and I thought that whoever had tried and failed would try again one day. I did NOT expect anyone to be so brazen as to attack the Pentagon. That news came as a real shock to me, being in the Army. As a soldier, you expect to meet the enemy on the battlefield, not in Washington D.C. I was heartened to see my fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, as well as DoD Contractors running to the aid of the fallen. I don't think I've ever been prouder to wear the uniform of this country than I was on that day. I had never felt directly impacted by anything any President had spoken. (Especially given the kind of leadership we as a country had just emerged from in the "Clinton Years."). But I listened VERY carefully to President Bush that day. His words filled me with a pride in my country that I had not felt since first taking the oath of enlistment in the Army. Seeing him react, as he did, with a little anger (and more than a little resolve), made him at once, a Commander, a President I could be proud of, a human being, and a guiding light for what was to come. I thought to myself that THIS is definitely the right man to have leading our country right now. You could see it in his eyes.... he.... meant....business! As I write this, I am still at Scott Air Force Base. I am still assigned to United States Transportation Command. I still wear the uniform of the United States Army. All the while, since October 2001, my fellow service men and women have been in Afghanistan, Iraq, along the DMZ in Korea, the Philippines, and most recently started the process of deploying to Liberia. I am safe. They are not. I have lived. Many of my comrades-in-arms have not. Those who have died have paid the ultimate price for freedom. Those who are still there continue the process begun in September 2001 by the words "We are at war." Don't forget who fired the opening salvos of this war on September 11, 2001. We have joined the fight, and will see it through. No matter how long it takes. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. In general, no, nothing has changed. I continue to serve in the Army. In the fine details, yes. My family and I tend to be closer, and we have a deeper appreciation and respect for our Executive government these days. I tend to stand even more straight-backed when I'm in uniform. I'm more proud of my comrades-in-arms, and continually thankful that none of my direct acquaintances died in the attack on the Pentagon, or in duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We should remember those who died innocently by the hands of cowards. Yes, even the ones at the Pentagon. They were there, doing their duty to a country who only half appreciated them at the time, trying against all odds to keep an incident exactly like this one from becoming reality. We should remember the Civil Service employees: the police, firefighters, ambulance drivers, doctors, nurses, medical assistants, rescue volunteers, construction workers, and everyday men and women who showed compassion and humility when it was most needed. Not only those who died giving assistance, but to those who continue on with their noble works. I think the fact that religious zealots were allowed to go unchecked (And in control of a NATION, no less) and supporting the very people who attacked our country speaks volumes about how the government had it's hands tied by Political Correctness in the years leading up to September 11th. Since the end of the Persian Gulf War, most Americans had a rose-colored outlook on where we stood as a country. Invencible. Dominating. The left-wing liberals had started the United States down the path to insignificance and weakness with their arguments of 'America is just a big bully'. Obviously not a big enough bully. I raise it every national holiday, especially those of remembrance. It has flown even more since the missions in Afghanistan and Iraq have begun. My love of our flag has grown even more since September 11th. I am trying even more these days to instill in my son that same love of country and feeling of duty to our fellow Americans. I don't know if it will work, but as for me, as long as I live I will honor those who have fallen, and those who continue to serve to protect our country. Everything felt the same as I followed my normal morning routine. When my dad called from work and told us to turn on the tv, my whole life, as well as the world's life changed at that very moment. I didn't quite understand what I was seeing, maybe I just didnt want to believe it. The newscasters were visibly shaken and in the same shock I was. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was living in Pittsburgh. I had just quit my job with a brokerage firm in San Diego the end of July. So, when our company was bought out, I cashed out my stock options, and my partner, Marc and I packed up everything to move back East where we both were from. I had been out West for the prior 5 years and was so happy to be back home where things were more familiar. I grew up in Philadelphia and had friends in New York. I love the city and enjoyed being a tourist there. Even though Arizona and California have some amazing and beautiful sights, it couldn't ever compare them to the feeling I had visiting Manhattan. My partner, Marc grew up in Northern New Jersey. New York was part of the regional neighborhood for him. We both couldn't wait to get some pays together and visit. One of the last places I visited was the World Trade Center on St. Patick's Day, 1996 with my sister. I made a point of us going there because I loved the twin towers and knew I wouldn't be able to see them in person for a long time. I was in the process of interviewing for a position with the same brokerage firm from San Diego, so until that came through, I was working for the Carnegie Library's main branch in the Oakland section of the city. It was such a beautiful cloudless morning. I remember arriving at work shortly before 8 a.m. thinking how like San Diego's weather it was, low humidity, perfect weather. I was filing some forms when my partner called me on the phone. He told me a plane hit the World Trade Center! I thought how horrible it was, but I thought it was a small commuter plane. The fire would be put out and I'd see it on the news when I got home. So, I was a little put off by the call. I mean, this was the middle of the work day and I'm on a new job that may lead to something permanent. So, here I'm taking a personal call. I got off the call but mentioned it to the computer techs I was working with. They seemed pretty amazed but none of us fathomed what we were about to hear as the day went on. A short time later, Marc calls again. He's sounding panicked. He's telling me another plane flew into the OTHER tower of the World Trade Center. I felt as though someone threw an ice cold bucket of water at me. I couldn't believe it. I love architecture. I'd been to the Trade center a handful of times. However, the last time I was there, I was purposefully trying to remember all the details of the experience until I could visit it again. The marble tiled multi-storied lobby. The polished chrome and glass. The way the street lights looked almost like the glow of lava flows through lower Manhattan at twilight and the flashes of pictures being taken from tourists at the Empire State building miles uptown. When I got off the phone, my nerves where shot. People around me at other desks were getting similar calls. I tried to bring up MSNBC or CNN but it was taking a long time to load. When I finally got it's main page to load and saw just how large the hole in the buildings were, I almost passed out! It was no small plane that hit the buildings. I knew right away that several floors were on fire. We were also able to bring up an internet news radio feed. They were describing another plane had hit the Pentagon and several planes were still unaccounted for. A woman from the desk over the cubicle told me her husband called and said they heard a missing plane was flying over Cleveland and had gone off course. It was headed for Pittsburgh! By this time, I was in shock with everything that had already happened, what I had seen. What I was hearing over the radio and on the phone from Marc. I dismissed this Pittsburgh bound plane. Why Pittsburgh? But at the same time, it didn't make any sense why New York and Washington. I used to call Morgan Stanley's operations center in the Trade Center. Their Account Transfers office was in 4 World Trade on the 5th floor. I saved that address in my Outlook contacts. Dealing with Morgan's branch offices usually was very frustrating. So, I would call the Trade center to expedite an account transfer problem or to get an answer on when an account was coming over. I remember talking to one of the reps around 1999. She was waiting for her computer to come back with an answer on something. I was making small talk about what it was like to work at the World Trade Center. She said she liked working there. She told me they had the bulk of their offices in the upper floors of 2 World Trade. She mentions the jazz concerts in the plaza during the summer months that she would listen to on her lunch breaks. I said, "Oh, so you just walk across the plaza when you have meetings there?" She said, sometimes, and sometimes they just take the elevator to the concourse level that connects the buildings." I just finished working for a brokerage firm. I knew what people were probably doing when all this happened. From secretaries, to wire operators, brokers, traders, support staff and janitors...ordinary people who just thought they were going to work that day. Murdered. Out right murdered. Suddenly, nothing horrific seemed to be off limits in my imagination. Marc calls again. This time he's telling me another airliner crashed in a field outside of Pittsburgh. He also told me his father, who works in Brooklyn was supposed to deliver a printing job in lower Manhattan and his mom hasn't heard from him. She tried his cell number over and over and there was no answer. Marc's mom works as a secretary for a school in Northern New Jersey and many of the children at the school had a parent or parents working in the towers. Her brother, trying to get a train out of Manhattan in Penn Station had heard of a plane crash in Pittsburgh and thought it had crashed into one of the sky scrapers in the downtown area. He was concerned for me, thinking I was working there. Thankfully, Marc's father stopped to talk with a client in New Jersey before heading for the tunnels and by the time he got there, cars were being turned around. No one was going through the tunnels. Word finally got out to Marc's uncle that the plane crash happened 80 miles outside of Pittsburgh. We also got work Marc's dad was safe. I stayed at work the entire day. I was in a fog. Working at the Carnegie gave me access to the art museum, the library, the Natural History Museum. Around noon, I didn't want to hear about any of it anymore. I couldn't take it. I wanted to go to a place in that huge building and pretend it wasn't happening. I wandered through the empty art gallery but people, cashiers, guards, anyone with a radio had it tuned to news of the disasters. It was everywhere. I thought it was odd being in this place of civilation and culture while this facade of safety, facade of invicibility was falling apart. When Marc called and told me one of towers was gone. I said, "what do mean it's 'gone'?? You mean the top floors fell over? He said, 'No, the entire building collapsed' I stood there frozen with the phone in my hand. In 1993, it took people a good hour or hours to get all the way down the stairs. I knew there were alot of people still in the building. I knew instantly thousands of people died a horrific and brutal death. The towers were immense. Each floor was the size of an acre. Multiply that acre by 110 floors and double it. Then place a shopping mall underneath, and 6 stories of parking and transit lines. I still can't think of it without crying. It's a fire in New York. All the personnel working to get people out of the building. All the bystanders looking up at the towers. I still can't believe it could happen. Marc said he heard that most everyone had vacated the building when the first tower was hit. I knew that was probably the case, but there still would have been many people still trying to get out. When I got home, Downtown Pittsburgh was a ghost town. When I sat on the fire escape of our building looking at downtown, usually there were helicopter and planes flying about and cars going by on Western Avenue, but nothing. I was so quiet. This beautiful, cloudless eerie quiet sunset. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have this sense if immediacy. Anything I feel I want to do before I die, I do as soon as I can. I don't put things off anymore for another time. It's shown me the impermanence of conditions in our world. I don't feel I can count on anything to last forever. I've felt so aweful since Sept 11th. The only thing that kept me going was Marc and the stories of unbelievable sacrifice. That those who died were in the presence of angels in the form of rescue workers and co-workers. That in the face of unspeakable evil, the closest thing I've ever come to seeing the face of a satanic monster's acts, there were words of comfort, incredible sacrifice and bravery. Americans rose to the challenge and brought down a plane in Pennsylvania. Made sure people got out safely. Lined up for blocks to donate their blood. Volunteered to dig through a living hell. When I would visit the 107th floor "Top of the World" observatory, I would always be in the presence of families from every country in the world. Most speaking in the native languages and marveling at this engineering marvel. I was always so proud of my country when I was around these people. That I lived in a country that could create something so amazing, it drew people from all over the world to see it. The words of those citizens in countries all over the world. The flowers, the tears, the comfort they've provided has also helped to heal the wounds of that day. I feel I need to thank them all. The entire world was united in collective mourning, grief and support. We all felt our humanity on that day. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The main thing is how fragile life is. And how we all live on the planet together. No matter what flag people call their own, or what part of the world their from, we're all human. I thought the goal in life, before Sept. 11th, was to get rich and amass as much material status as possible. I always thought if I was working in the World Trade Center for a brokerage firm, it would be the penultimate statement that I had achieved success. When the towers collapsed, so did my illusions. Illusions that we're safe from terrorists. That American lives are more important that others. On September 11 I was sitting in one of my classes at school when all of a sudden some kind of news was flowing throughout the class. People were saying that the World Trade Center had an airplane crash into it and that the building itself had collapsed. At first I was thinking, "yeah ok, what are you kidding me? I thought it was just some rumor or someone had accidentally misinterpreted something differently from which really had of happened to the WTC. As the day went by, more and more people were discussing this and at some point it had hit me that what I'm hearing from everyone sounds pretty true. On the way to my seventh period class I was still pretty skeptical about what I had been hearing, but as the bell rang our teacher turned on the television. There it was right in front of my face, the WTC had been attacked, and it all seemed so unrealistic. I was really shocked to see this and didn't know what to think. I was mostly angry, but such a huge thing like this wasn't easy to try and sit down and keep hearing about. I'll probably never forget that moment when I actually saw the way the building looked. It's just something you don't see everyday, and I hope to god we don't have to witness something like it again. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My personal life honestly hasn't been affected by what had happened. But my perspective of how I look at terrorism has changed. It's obviously a serious matter, but I never thought something of such a large scale to us like this could of ever happened. I'm still angry, just like everyone else, about what those people had done to our country. So many peoples lives were taken, and many families devastated. I think now that our country needs to stay more alert, and be more prepared for ANYTHING. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? What I think SHOULD be remembered about September 11 is how our whole country sort of came together to help one another. The way the firemen, policemen, nurses, doctors and many others made their way to help out our country's people. For this period of time people seemed to be more nice to each other. People waved American Flags and were more proud of their country. Those are the things I think that should be remembered throughout the time when this tragedy occurred. I was in 8th grade, and my teacher was talking about terrorist attacks in other Country's. As soon as we starting talking about the different kind of attacks that happened. My science teacher came running through the door, telling us to come to the library. Our whole class went and watched the horrific event on CNN. I was so scared because I knew my About worked in the world trade centers, and my uncle worked in Wall street, and I was very nervous for there safety. Then we were hearing about the pentagon, and it was all so sad. I wanted to go home and make sure my family was, ok. All the teachers were around crying, and we were all not sure of what was happening. We were the first class to find out about it in the school, and all I was worried about were the people that I knew that worked out there and to make sure my family was ok. I got picked up early by my mom to go home. We didn't hear from my about and uncle until later in the day. And everyone in my family got home safe with minor injuries, but they and we have lost many friends in this target attack. I walked to my dorm room during my class break at 9:30 NY time, still oblivious to what had happened. I remember walking past a girl and a guy talking, the girl was moving both her hands as if they were planes, tracing their path. I heard "two planes" as I walked past but for some reason I didn't stop and ask. I came back to class and a student announced what had happened. Incredibly, my journalism professor went right back to the lesson plan! At 11:30 I finally walked out of class and went to the journalism lounge to watch CNN. I remember that everyone was excited and anxious to tell other people, even if everyone else knew what was going on. For some reason I had an urge to break the news to someone who hadn't heard yet. In a historical perspective, and I know it sounds cold to say this, 3000 dead people is not very much. 1 000 000 people died in Rwanda in 1994 and most Americans don't even know it happened. I thought, as most everyone else did at the time, that it was a small plane and was a horrible accident. I was driving to work when I heard that another plane had hit the second tower. When I got to work, there were multiple tvs in the hallway and everyone was gathered around them watching and crying. I saw the first tower fall before I had to go to class. My latin professor told us that her brother-in-law worked at the Pentagon and no one had heard anything about him. My classes were cancelled for the day and i ended up sitting in the movie theatre of the student union and watching the news along with hundreds of people i had never met. I remember this deafening silence and sobbing. That evening my roommates and I went to church because we really didn't know what else to do. My generation had never witnessed something of this proportion. It was very humbling. I've heard things said about my generation and how we're not changing the world or that we're lazy. But when I look around, it's kids that are my age (24) and younger who are risking their lives everday. I know people that were in college or graduated college and enlisted after September 11th. I walked into spanish and all of a sudden my teacher turned on the television and started crying.At first I didn't exactly know what was going on but later I figured out how big of a deal it really was. My teacher actually scared me the most though because she just busted out crying and could barely talk. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I don't think that my life has changed a whole lot since September 11th. People are more patriotic now and you see stuff everywhere about America and I actually don't like that. I don't like how all of a sudden people started loving America and how it took a tradedy like this to realize how great our courty really is. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? How people felt should be remembered I think. It was such a tragec event and I hope that people don't stop being so supportive of America like they are right now. Everyone seems so patriotic and in some ways I like it and in some ways I don't. Yes we actually did fly an American flag anfter 9/11 but we always have so its nothing really new. We have always flown one at our lake cabin at the end of our dock. Once again coming back to people all of a sudden being so patrioic and flying a dozen flags that really bugs me because they acted like they didn't care before. They need something as tragic as this to wake them up and realize how good we have it over here. Kids in the hall were whispering about the world's end and World War 3. It wasn't until 1:10 when I found out everything from my social studies teacher. I was mad that I didn't know before hand. The only thing that has really changed for me was when I went to Australia last summer and I saw how they were just as united as us. They were just as sad as we were and they were on the other side of the world. To see that kind of unity in another county was amazing. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think what should be remembered the most was how all united we were and still are. If we can stay together like this, we can pull through this. We already have started to, we just need to stay united finish. During my morning routine of getting ready for school I switched on the television to see what was going on with the local news. Suddenly there was breaking news, a plane crashing into the world trade center? It of course didn't register to me what a big deal this was or would turn out to be. Intensly keeping my eye on the screen I saw footage of the second plane crash into the tower. Open-mouthed I realized I had no clue what was going on. Throughtout the school day, the events never ceased to continue. TVs and radios played in classes as we all tried to make sense of these happenings. Some cried, some were angry, others, like myself, just kept to themselves wondering how it would all turn out in the end. All I knew was that this day would be remembered; incredible changes had taken place and I predicted more were still to come. Although the the impact of September 11 has not nearly had as large of an effect on me as others invovled, my life is still different because of it. I will always be a little cautious of flying or being in an event with mass amounts of people. Even if it ever seems like we should be completely safe, I will always have another thought in the back of my mind. Before September 11, I guess you could say I rarely thought about our relationships with other countries and their problems. But know I wish to be aware on where we stand with the world. I've also learned about patriotism, as I'm sure many others have. It's something I guess I've always had, yet I was saddened that it took such horrible events to bring it out of me. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everything should be remembered about September 11th. From the innocence of the beginning of that very morning, to the horrific tradgedies throughout the day, to the seemingly lost and scared feelings of the night. We should all remember the virtues America stood by that day. Our bravery, strentgh and hope for all that was lost are some of the positive parts I hope we can remember of the day.I know I will not only look back on this day for it's events, but for looking back at a time of selflesness for eachother where we united and held the country together for the same cause. When asked to recall what had happened that fatefull morning of 9/11, I don't even have to sit and contemplate. The memory clearly comes to my mind. Just like most people, they probably heard the news on television that morning; unfortunately I too, share that same boring story. I have always been the type to go to bed really late and wake up really early. That morning of eighth grade, I had woken up especially early to get ready. While sitting down in the family room with my hot bowl of oatmeal (which, by the way, is totally "illegal" with my parents to eat in that room), and turned on the news. What?! It was one of those moments where you can't and don't want to beleive what you were seeing. Like I said, there I was, sitting with my bowl of oatmeal watching horror strike our country. So even though my story isn't the greatest or most exciting, it's this moment that brought our nation closer together. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001 was a very significant date in the history of the United States. History wise, it was the first real attack on the U.S. since the raid on Pearl Harbor in 1941. We as a nation had not been threatened in this manor for years, and it truly gave us a scare and tested our unity. I feel that the experience also helped us, as a nation, truly realize our capabilities and potential for the future. Our country came together as a "family", showing our support for one another, and for the vicitms and their families, and for all those affected by the frightening day. This unity is truly what I see as the "history" of September 11th, because I think it is what future generations should acknowledge and see from this day. Yes, buildings were destroyed, people were killed, and businesses plummeted, but in the greater picture, our nation stood together. We as a people decided we would not let terrorism defeat us, or empower us. That I feel, is truly history! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has not changed drastically because of September 11th, 2001. Being so far away from the occurences, I don't feel as though my life was drastically altered. I do however, have more pride in my nationality, and in my country. I feel as though I'm willing to fight for what I believe is true, and that is the American justice system. I have come to realize how lucky I am to live in such a great nation, one in which I have so many freedoms and opportunities. Overall, my life has changed such that I realize how truly lucky I am to be living in the United States. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I believe there are many things that should be remembered about September 11th, 2001. Not only should future generations remember the violence, and acts of terror, and destruction caused to our country, but they should also remember the unity that was developed. What should be remembered is how positively U.S. citizens reacted, in supporting local charities, and donating to 9-11 support groups/funds. We as a country decided not to let terrosism overcome our greatness, and our attitudes. We lifted our spirits in a sense that everyone is more positive with eachother, and willing to help one another. What should be remembered is how our country stood together in our time of great need, and how we have continued to battle ever since. I haven't really thought about either question, but I guess I have more respect for the American flag. I understand how it is truly a symbol of our country, and I get chills up my spine everytime I see one flying in the wind.
