I was sitting in my senior english class in high school when a teacher came into the classroom and told everyone that a plane crashed into the world trade center. We turned on CNN and sat the rest of the class time watching....glued to the television. No one spoke. No one did work. Everyone was expressing their feelings about what happened in their different ways. The whole day, no matter what class we were in we watched to see what was going on. Everyone stopped and listen. I feel more proud to be in this country and feel more secure when I look at the American flag, knowing I live in a country that is so United and has Freedom. I was in my eigth grade science class when the principal came over the intercom telling teachers not to turn on the news and to have a normal day. After this annoucement, our science teacher, who didn't know what she was talking about, said something abou fighter planes and buildings in New York. By then, it was time to leave that class and as I walked into my third period class, I saw one of the towers crumbling before our teacher turned it off. I did not know much more until I got home and began to see what had really happened and heard the horror of it as the stations allowed the word f*ck to be said and I saw the desperate people jumping from the top floors of the towers. I watched it all night as we all began to feel a tremendous amount of hatred toward Osama bin Laden and his followers. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My brother was in the army when it happened, so we were worried about him. But he never had to go, for our prayers were answered as his superiors were unable to cancel his orders to Wissconsin. I also, as most others have felt a need to be more patriotic, and have learned to love our invincible country even more. The tremendous amount of heroism that rose from the people of New York is something that should not only be remembered, but modeled. After the events, I began to carry a small one around with me to remind of the tragedy of the events and the greatness of our nation even under attack. Early that fateful morning, my wife Brenda went into labor with the impending birth of our first daughter, Bernadette. Amidst the excitement of that moment and the scrambling to gather everything necessary to make the trip to the hospital, I remembered that I needed to call family and friends and let them know that the big day was upon us at last. As I called the first contact on my list (an old Army buddy and fellow Persian Gulf War Vet) and told him "I can't believe it, but it's finally happening", his reply was "I know...I've been watching it on TV". I was surprised for a second, and asked how he could be watching it on TV, we were obliviously talking about two different things. I'm talking about my wife, what was he talking about? He told me to turn on the TV and see for myself; so I did. I was shocked to see the north tower of the World Trade Center on the news, smoking after being struck by the first plane. This must have been at about 8:50am or so. I reiterated the news of our trip to the hospital and proceeded to call the other few people on my list as well. We left for the hospital at around 9:00am and heard of the second plane hitting the south tower during our short trip. Upon arriving at the hospital, all of the TVs in the admitting area were trained on the news coverage. At around 9:30am, President Bush stated that the country had suffered an apparent "Terrorist Attack". Less then 15 minutes later (during my wife's intensifying labor and urges to watch her and not the TV), Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. My eyes kept jumping back and fourth between my wife, who was in the most excruciating pain that I had ever seen her in, and the TV coverage that was detailing a horrific attack on our country. My feelings as a husband and as a father-to-be were in direct competition with my ardent patriotism. Since I could do nothing to improve the situation abroad, I focused my attention toward assisting my wife in any way that I could. Our baby daughter was finally born at 7:10pm on September 11th, 2001 after over 11 hours of hard labor. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has definitely changed in many ways because of September 11th. Firstly, I now have a beautiful and healthy baby daughter who gives me more joy and pride then I have ever known. After having experienced this horrible act of hatred, cowardice and terror perpetrated against our country along with the rest of America, I can honestly say that something good did in fact come from that day. Secondly, my wife and I have now vowed to celebrate some form of human kindness on our daughter's birthday every year. We have prepared a scrapbook to record the events each year, so she will learn and remember that the horrible things in this world can always be overpowered and overcome by goodness, charity and love for others. Our first entry in her book will take place on September 11th, 2002 when we attend a prayer vigil at our church in Yorba Linda, California. We will teach our daughter to pray for many things on this day: for all of the victims and heroes; for all of the victims families and friends who must learn to live without them; for the misguided and disillusioned men who committed this dreadful act; and for the world...that an event like this may never again take lives of innocents. The terrorists who executed this attack need no more regard, for their actions were that of cowardice. We need to support our nations military and our President in any just endeavors he undertakes to ensure that this type of act cannot happen again. I want people to strive to remember that there were also good things that happened on September 11th, 2001. While life was being taken from this world, new life was also entering into it. Furthermore, it should not have to take an act of terrorism to unite Americans and focus them upon acts of kindness, memoriam and patriotism. Our country's history is rich with acts of heroism and great sacrifice. You need not look very far to find inspiration. He turned on the television in our room and what we saw was total chaos. It was terrifying. I actually witnessed the collapse of the second tower. All we heard about that day was the terrorist attack. It was all so sudden and hard to believe. I guess I was kind of in shock. What had happened really didn't sink in until I got home from school that day and saw my mother crying in front of the television. My life has changed, but it wasn't too drastic. Just little things. Security has gotten tighter, and everywhere I go people seem just a little bit more suspicious of one another. A lot more people have become more patriotic as well as religous, including myself. I don't take my freedom for granted anymore. I appreciate it more than I ever have. Untill later that day when I got home all over the news there were buildings falling and people screaming. The news was on for like three or four days. Then i finally found out what they were. Then i heard what else had happened. The Pentagon had been attacked and i knew what that was. That day hundreds of firefighters tried to save what was left of the lives inside the Towers. Once I arrived at work, I of course watched in sheer horror on televion what just didn't seem like it could be true: commercial airplanes being used at missles. Well, of course panic broke out in my department, my floor, my building, my block, my city. Washington D.C. was so surreal. What I remember most about what I observed that day were facial expressions of EVERYONE I laid eyes upon that day: shock and fear. It was the same, no matter your lot in life, your social status, your income, where you lived, the car you drove . . . for one moment in the 10 years that I've lived in Washington D.C., I finally felt we were one. I was puzzled at first. I had decided to call my mom, who was at home, at the time of the attacks. All I could here was her TV, and my mom saying "Oh my God, another one just hit." I could not believe what my ears where hearing. Her and I started to dicuss the situation. Then it was confirmed a plane hit the Pentagon. My heart stopped. One of my closed and dear friends works there. I instantly started to cry. By this time I had told my mom I would see her in a bit. I hung up the my phone, and it rang right back. I was my daughters daycare center. Telling me to come and get her because the center was closing. I let my employer know that I would be spending the rest of this day with my daughter, and mother. I walked into the daycare center, and everyone was in shock. Teachers were crying because they had family members in NYC. After grabbing my daughter, and heading to my mothers home. I arrived too hear that a plane just went down in PA. ( the state that I am from)My mother and I sat there and cried about the whole situation and could not believe what we were seeing on TV. I went to work that day, as I do everyday, but nothing could have prepared me for what was to take place less than one hour after I arrived at the office. Shortly after 8:45 in the morning, I received an e-mail stating that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I thought to myself at the time that it must have been a small private plane and something had gone terribly wrong for the unfortunate pilot. As we turned on the office television to get more information, my heart sank as I realized it was not a small plane, but instead a jetliner full of people...and words cannot begin to express what I felt at seeing another plane hit the second tower just minutes later. I knew at that moment that this was no accident. How can a person prepare for something as significant and life-altering as this? You can't. I will never be able to get the images of that fateful day out of my mind...images of innocent, helpless people jumping out of windows to a certain death hundreds of feet above the ground...images of burning buildings with countless men and women trapped inside...images of grief-stricken observers who could do nothing but watch in horror and wonder where it would end...images of the two most prominent buildings in the Manhattan skyline crumbling into ash and debris...images of the Pentagon ravaged by fire and death. It was the first time in my life that I can remember feeling completely and utterly helpless. It was truly a day that will live in infamy and one that I will never forget...because failing to remember means I would be as guilty as the terrorists who committed this indecent, heinous act against America. We realized that we were not as safe and secure as we thought we were. It was a reality check for all of us. Personally, I did not know anyone who perished on that day. For that I am most thankful and grateful to God. However, so many people died that it is difficult not to empathize with those who did lose a loved one. We are all Americans and we all lost something that day. It is only through coming together and standing tall in the midst of terror that we will heal from these tragic events. My life changed drastically over the past year in that I no longer take freedom for granted. I have learned that being an American doesn't mean exemption from tragedy and terrorism. I have learned that in times of great distress, we all do come together, forget our differences and help one another. I have learned that we are now stronger than we were before September 11, 2001, and we will rise above this catastrophe and do everything in our power to prevent something like this from ever happening again. More than 3,000 innocent men and women lost their lives that day while some insane lunatic in Afghanistan cheered and congratulated the monsters who carried out his plan of attack. Buildings can be re-built...hurt and despair are healed given time...the goverment is working to make us feel safe...but human life, once gone, cannot be replaced. Those who perished are gone forever - but they are most certainly not forgotten. We must also remember that these events brought us closer as Americans. We must never forget that which brought us together. It was our faith...our heritage...our freedom...our liberty. We must stay strong and support one another always...for when we fail to do so, we once again become susceptible. If we become susceptible, we become targets again. But, if we show terrorists that we are strong enough to rise up in victory after something like this, we also show them that they were unsuccessful in their motive when they attacked. I have always revered the American flag because I have always appreciated what it means to be an American. After September 11, 2001, I have even more respect for the stars and stripes. Our school did not tell us about the attack because they thought that everyone in the school would get scared. When I got home that day from school I quickly ran and turned on the TV. My sister and mom had been home from school that day, because she was sick, and they both told me that they were both sitting on the couch watching the news. They said that it was very scary and that they had never seen anything like that before. The next couple days everyone at school and at my house was really scared and I know that I was wondering how something like this could happen to the US without being able to stop it. The news papers the rest of that week had the picture of the World Trade Center with the plane inside the building on fire on the front page. Whenever I see a bird in the sky and it looks like an airplane it scares me to think that the terrorists can be on a plane and could just decide to do another suicide bombing with the plane right into my subdivision. My boyfriend called from his car to tell me he heard on the radio that the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. He urged me out of bed and to turn on the news. I let him go and went into the living room. I turned on CNN and was horrified to watch a second plane hit the second tower. I sat on the couch in front of the television all day. I watched the towers fall. I cried. I don't think I moved from the couch all day long. I called my college roommate Carly who worked for Piper Jaffray at the Sears Tower in Chicago. She answered her cell phone to tell me she'd fled after the first plane and went to the train station. She was on her way home to the suburbs of Chicago. Her mother picked her up from the station and she told me they cried together. I felt some relief in that. I think I finally fell asleep in front of the tv. I checked in to work to see what was happening. They told everyone on the trading floor to go home after the second plane hit. The voicemail told us to come in the next day. To be there for our customers in NY. I went in the next day expecting the worst. Everyone was somber. Most people knew someone - be it clients, friends or family that were missing. We kept waiting for people to be brought out. It was horrible. We waited for word of when the market would open again. we started at the TV's. No one really had any idea. It was a horrible day. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My friends and I did our best to keep on living. We didn't want to be afraid. We wanted things back to "normal." We wanted to smile. We wanted to laugh and enjoy. We decided to go to NYC. Spend some money and visit Ground Zero. We went the first week of October. We saw a Broadway show and did some shopping. We walked past the NYSE. We went past the soldiers with guns. It was surreal. we saw that last piece of the WTC... we cried. We hugged. But made a resolve to keep going on with life. I took a photo of a sign that said "I love NY more than ever." It's on my desk at work. We stopped at a fire station. One of the people with us had her 5th grade class make cards. We gave them to the firemen - prayed at their memorial - they lost an astounding 13 men. Cried with them and told them how glad we were that they were there. After that life moved on. I got engaged. Work moved on. We never forget. I've hung a permanent flag in my apartment window. I have an "I love (heart) NY" sticker on my car. I think about those I love a little more and I pray every day. I didn't do that before. People are more important. Time with family is great - I try to get out more and visit with friends. I try to do more for people I love to make sure they know how I feel. I am NOT afraid. I think everyone knows something horrible could and probably will happen again - It's inevitable. I don't worry about it though. It's a waste of time. I want people to know how much I love them. Whether I am taken away, they are taken away, or we all remain. I don't want anything left untouched. I still cry at footage, but know in my heart we will overcome. We will win. We have and will stick together no matter what. I am proud to be an American. I wish for tolerance. The coming together. The heroism. The horrifying events should never be forgotten, but we need to remember that we went on together - never forgetting, but moving on none the less. We also need to remember how hard the police and firemen work. What they do for us. How they risk their lives for us and don't ask anything in return. How EMTs are there every day working to help people. Remember the lives lost and the families left here. Remember the Red Cross and all the restaurants and stores that helped people after the attacks. Remember the true patriotism - not the flag-waving - but the TRUE Patriotism of Americans. I exited my 2nd period math class talking with my friends about how much math homework we had just received. That turned out to be the least of my worries. As I entered Biology I saw some students watching the TV. It was the news and the reporter was saying how an airplane had crashed into one of the trade towers. Pretty soon the whole class was there and everyone was watching the TV. At this point I wasn't too concerned, it was just another plane crash, except this one coincidentally hit one of the trade towers. Just then another plane sturck the other tower. Since I travel a lot, I experience the airport hassles frequently. I understand they need to protect airplane passengers, but it is so ridiculous to have to spend hours at an airport to make sure that you have enough time to go through security.
