On September 11th I first learned of the terrible event when I returned from getting my school picture taken. The radio spilled information into our room with such an effect that none of us thought that it was true. I later learned that as I took my picture the seccond plane hit the seccond building. When I had come home from school I stayed in the same position for at least half an hour looking at the TV and its unrealistic footage. Don't be fooled, all of the questions were to better understand Islam. None of the questions were our of hatred. My mother who represents does Public Relations for the Islamic Society of Tulsa, has been working day and night to make sure that the general public understand that Islam here in Tulsa and all over the world would not condone such an act of hatred. We shouldn't remember only our faith in God, but our faith in each other to ensure our safety and love for our fellow citizens. Around 7:30 that morning my father called me from his work and told my sister and I to turn on the television, that something of catastrophic proportions had happened - another Pearl Harbor. When I turned on the TV it wasn't hard to find out what all of the panic was about; every station bore witness. I couldn't quite believe what was happening. As I saw the planes crash into the Twin Towers, and just moments later tumble to the ground, I was in awe. It made my stomach churn as I saw people jump to their death from more than thirty stories. To be presented with the choice of having a burning building collapse on you, or free falling into the cement, terrified me. I hope I will never have to make that choice. I want to just imagine that it never occurred, but I know it has. Even though many innocent people lost their lives the morning of September 11, I know that not just evil has come from it. That day has changed me, and countless others, hopefully for the better. I try not to be bitter about these events because I believe it has brought us together as a nation like nothing else could have. For a while I was scared another attack would occur, and this time my friends and family wouldn't be so lucky. Although, I know it could happen again, I feel stronger both as an individual and as a nation. Every day I try not to take my life for granite, but be thankful that I still have a chance to make a difference, and live my life to the fullest. We were learning about some stupid thing when our principal, Mr. Benette, came on the intercom and told everyone about the events. When he went off of the intercom, my physics teacher said that this is a terrible day in American history, but we must continue learning about whatever. (i guess it wasn't that important because i dont remember what we were learning about.) During fourth period, the TVs in all of the classrooms came on and everyone watched the live newscasts on abc. I was in band at the time. My director mr. tomlin was still in a state of shock when we walked in the room. I still remeber when the second tower fell, Peter Jennings started yelling at whoever had the camara at the site. Most of the students went through the day in a daze- like this was all a movie. The goths thought it was great- going through the hallways saying praise allah and stuff like that. I was just a lowly freshman so i couldnt really do anything about it. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. The sky was deep blue. I was on the N train coming in from Astoria Queens. There was a delay in service, I usually get off at 57th Street but got off at 5th Avenue because I was carrying a cheesecake that I had made for my fellow co-workers. I saw alot of smoke when I got off the train and so many emergency vehicles racing downtown. I thought it was a fire in a highrise or office building but never imagined it could be the World Trade Center. When I arrived at my office at 54th and Fifth Avenue one of my co-workers told me a plane had hit the Trade Center. I thought it was an accident but when I turned on 1010 WINS I knew better. I listened to the events as they were unfolding and as other co-workers were arriving. Still shocked, I tried to get some work done but could not and went into one of the offices where many had gathered to watch the news. The second plane hit Tower Two, a deeper shock and sadness hit. I had been at this job only two months. My final day on the 83rd floor of Two WTC was June 25, 2001. Five of my former co-workers were killed in that attack. The plane had hit very close to the area where I used to look out in the morning when I arrived early at the office. I have pictures and memories. I wanted to get out of Manhattan and went to my wifes office in Rockefeller Plaza. Everything was shut down. The trains and buses were out of service. Thousands of people were walking, many hugging each other. Jumping on the backs of trucks going over the Queensboro Bridge. We walked and looked over our shoulders at the burning Towers. Listening to the rumble of Airforce Jets. I think of the lives that were taken. I am angry and sad. Sometimes I wish it was still September 10th. In San Antonio, Texas, most of us heard about "a big explosion" in New York on the radio as we went through our work day. When my husband called with further details, he said that a plane had crashed into one of the Towers; he and I both thought a small plane had lost its way. We couldn't believe it and felt sorry for the plane's occupants. When I turned CNN on, my first images were of the second plane hitting the building. I refused to believe what I was seeing. It couldn't possibly be. As the ongoing reports filtered in, I knew two things: History was being written before my eyes and that the United States and its citizens would never be the same. We sent our employees home to be with their families and to pray that the worst was over. We all awaited further reports with awe and anger. The people of New York were extremely brave and wonderful. In Texas, we felt great respect and admiration for them, their brave police officers and firefighters. We all wanted to be there to help. As horrible as that sounds, I can't find it within myself to forgive. How could they take so many lives for their cause? The positive side is that I've never felt so much allegiance to my country, my fellow citizens, my government, and my president. I thank God every day that Mr. Bush was in the White House when this terrible event occurred. He has given us reason to be a proud people once more. It made all other issues in this country a moot point. U.S. and state flags are prolific now - they fly on every corner. It is a humbling and proud time for all of us. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had just woken up when my mother called me to tell me that a plane had struck one of the towers. I quickly ran to the tv to turn it on. I watched in shock, and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I remember crying and hoping that those poor people could get out of there. My husband was getting ready for work, and I told him what was going on. He came to the living room to watch with me, and just as he joined me, the second tower was hit. I was crying and praying for those people in those buildings. My husband stayed home from work that day so we could be together. I remember that my mom and I stayed on the phone together for at least 3-4 hours as we witnessed this horrible act. We talked about our lives, and all the people that we love. We talked about what those people must have been thinking. Were they scared, were they at peace, were they able to talk to their loved ones before they dissappeard forever? I could only think about the people going through this. I put myself in their place, and could only imagine what they must have felt. What the families of the victims must have felt. I could only hope . That's all I could do, was hope and pray. I felt so helpless, so sad. I greived for days. I still do. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed tremendously. Truely, there is NOT one day that goes by that I don't think of 9-11. The impact of this act has stayed with me as if it were still yesterday that this took place. I am still hoping that one day I will wake up and see that it was all just a horrible dream, and the towers will be there again. The people will be with their loved ones again. I am still a little scared to go to public places with a huge crowd. I am more aware of my surroundings now. I watch. I watch to see if anything is out of place. If someone is someplace they shouldn't be. I don't like to go to the mall anymore. I'm scared that something might happen. I don't go to church anymore. I'm scared to because I attend a large church with attendance of 3000+. I basically stay home. If I do go out somewhere, I get what I need and get home as soon as I can. I'm not walking in complete fear, but some. I have 3 kids. I can't take a chance of being somewhere that will put my innocent childrens' lives at risk. I want to protect them more. I tell them I love them as often as I can. I hold them. I tell them how special they are. My husband and I tell each other EVERY day that we love each other. Although I am afraid to go places, this horrible event has only caused our family to get closer, and appreciate what we have. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I am a teacher who lives in a little town in upstate NY called Montgomery. On, Sept. 11, 2001, I was at a new job, teaching 6th graders in Twin Towers Middle School. I received a call on my cell phone right about 9:00. The caller said the Towers were being bombed. My thoughts turned immediately to my husband, Ed Fahey who is a New York City Firefighter. His firehouse, Ladder 1, Engine 7, is many times first due to the WTC. I knew he was working and would be there. I couldn't keep it together and had to have an administrator take over my class. My friend, AnnMarie had to pick me up at the school and take me home. I did try to call the firehouse, but of course there was no answer. On the drive home, she told me both towers had fallen. I felt very sick at once. I could only think of my two young children and what I could possibly say to them. I could not watch the TV and asked AnneMarie not to put it on in her home. I had to find out if Eddie made it out and was alive. A few hours later I found out he was alive and I finally got to speak to him at around 6:00 that night. It was an unbelievable feeling! But, we started to find out all the people that did not make it. What a tragic and terribly sad day. So many other families were not as lucky as us. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of someone lost or read about a family memeber or realize how lucky my children and I were that day. Until I turned on my TV and as I was watching MTV, breaking news interrupted and I saw 2 air planes crashing into the 2 buildings and I didn't know what to think from there. I was shocked and as you see people try as hard as they can to save their own lives it is devastating for you to be at home watching people risk lives. And all i can hear was people screaming and yelling "oh my god." I had too many questions in my head, I started to tear up because I had no one to talk to it about, but just myself. I think we should remember all the brave fighting soldiers, fire fighters, and policemen that risk their own lives to save other people. We are all human and they're just like us, they were doing part of their job. Saving people and trying to get them to safety. I got up, got dressed and got on my bus to middle school. The school kept the attacks a secret from the kids but I could tell something was wrong by the faces of my teachers. Parents were coming into school to pick up their kids. Our lobby was filled with parents and students, which was odd and we were all wondering what was wrong. During my last period of the day, my wood shop teacher told us all what happened. He showed us pictures of the World Trade Centers burning and falling to the ground. I was at work at Blind Industries and Services of Maryland on that fateful Tuesday morning when I heard on the radio about the World Trade Center. It was hard to visualize what was happening because we don't have access to a tv. It was very frightening for our blind associates because they couldn't literally see what was happening. We kept getting updates on the radio, and I remember being terrified that we were all going to die. I called my parents and my best friend to find comfort and tell them that I love them. I will never forget walking down the halls of my schools and hearing people talk about what happened. Everyone was talking about it. It was like a bad dream. Then, my principle came on over the PA system and informed everyone of the events that had taken place. Teachers turned on the T.V.s and students and teachers all watched in disbelife. We asked our selfs why would anyone want to do this to our country? Who would do this? All the inoccent lives that were taken that day. The young and the old. It was scary. We did not know if he was ever going to come home. We did not know if he was going to come home alive. We prayed to God everyday for the safe return of our loved one. And although he returned home safe and unharmed, a little overwhelmed, we could not help but think of the people that lost close loved ones. My life has made an unmarkable change since September 11th. I know realize how fragile life is. I no longer take life for granted. When my cousin got sent over Sea's, we had no contact with him. We lived day by day praying to God he was alive and he would come home to us. We lived like that for almost 3 years. And then when he came home, it was the happiest day of our life, but even though part of us was happy, we still prayed and thought for those who were not as fortunite as us and thier loved ones did not return home. All the people who lost thier lives going to what they thought would be a normal day of work, and then thier lives taken from them in a flash. I am a sixth grade teacher in Western Nebraska, and was getting ready for school when the news coverage began. I saw the second plane hit just before I had to leave for school. It was a difficult morning with the students because we were asked to leave news reports off, and my imagination and fears raced without the news and video reports available. Many of my fears were fueled by the fact that we live in the midst of many defense missiles. As a child I was fearful of our need to use these missiles, and these fears were rapidly brought to the surface. My students and I found comfort in writing poetry. The phone rang it was my finace telling me a plane had just hit Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. I ran and turned on the TV and witnessed the 2nd plane hitting Tower 2. At about the time second period started the principal came on the announcements to announce a horrible tradgedy had occured and that if we needed any help or needed to call our parents that it would be okay. No-one really knew what happened or what he was talking about, he only told us that a plane had flown into the Twin Towers in NY and a plane had flown into the Pentagon in DC. Everyone hussled and haggled with their teachers to go online or turn the TVs on so we could have somewhat of an idea what was going on. Finally in 3rd period my teacher let us get online and watch the news, it was all over the news. The footage of the planes flying into the towers and people jumping to their deaths! Over and over again they showed this horrible footage. They went between showing the Towers and the Pentagon for days on in. Every channel was devoted to finding out more and showing all they could to keep the public informed. It soon came to the minds of the media that it wasn't just a regular occurence, it was a terrorist attack against Americans and all that being an American stands for. Everyone was scared and yet sympathetic at the same time, it was a horrible day in history but we learned from our mistakes and have increased awareness about attacks. I still don't understand why someone would attack a country just because of our beliefs. So many people come to America to participate in our government and society but i guess a select few don't like our way of life and took it in their own hands to try and fix it. They don't realize that they didn't affect us in the way they wanted they just brought us closer and we have stayed that way since. Even on the 2nd year anniversary (September 11, 2003) you will see people waving their flags and wearing their red, white, and blue! It is approximately 8:48 am on the 2nd year anniversary and we just had a nationwide moment of silence, so obviously it still has an affect on all of America.
