NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My name is Shannon Shorter, I heard it on the radio. Then as I got home I saw it on the news. I felt lost for words and emotions even though the tears came rolling down. Watching the horror of the planes in the towers and at the Pentagon.Seeing all the blood,smoke, and death it was unbareable at times. Then hearing of the heros on Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Even in turmoil there are those that will prevail. The crew and passengers did on Flight 93 and so shall we.I had a friend that was missing in NY she was in the subway under the World Trade Center. She was one of the lucky ones who was able to get out. So I am able to feel empathy for those who were not able to come home to their family and friends. For the weeks to come I wore my colors proudly. Everyday to work I was in red,white and blue. I still can not believe to what has happened. Some still fear but I don't. I use to dread getting out of bed and facing another day. It took our country to go through this terror for me to feel alive. I have never felt this proud of my country in my life. Especially from my heritage point of view. Everything they went through. I display my love for my Country even more. Everyday for the past year I wear some form of red, white and blue. I appreciate each day even more. I will live for those lost. I still may have a few days where I have a hard time at living but all I do is look at my living room wall and feel the love all over again. What I think should be remembered is not the destruction that has come to us but the togetherness the country shares. The rememberance of those lost and, remembering for those who knew them, the life they lived and the sacrifice they gave. They died so we may live to remember. I was just sitting watching the news and it happened. It was told that a small plane hit the WTC. As the minuets past it got worse. By that time I was on the phone with my mom. Shaken we hung up to listen to what had just happened. My sister called and we were on the phone as the 2nd plane hit and she screamed we are under attack. She had to go to call her husband. I sat in disbelief. My sister called back just as the plane hit in Washington DC. Oh my we are going to war. We both knew it. It saddens me, I am 100% more patrotic that I was 1 year ago. I also joined a group because of what happened. Operation Special Delivery, is a free Doula service for the wives of men who have be deployed. It is a great honor to be by a woman side as she gives birth. I feel like I am serving my country. I witnessed September 11th on television in all of my classes that day, but even before i went to school i had heard about what was going on the radio when i was getting ready for school. When the two towers fell i was in 1st and 2nd period so we basically watched t.v. or if we didn't have t.v. in the classroom we listened to the news reports over the radio. All day, even after school all the news showed were those horrible images of when the two towers fell, it was just a constant reminder of what had happened. Every one was talking about it and it just made things worse because everyone was panicking and sad. The rest of the day after 1st ad 2nd period they tryed not to remind us of what was happening so much, we tryed to stay on normal routine, which was hard knowing what was going on at that same time. We had memorial services and moments of silence for those who were lost and even some people at school had either known or do know people who had been lost and were grief stricken. My life has changed because it just reminded me how much freedom we have that women in other countries dont have, so they just take it upon themselves to come and kill people here because of our beliefs. Many people are more skiddish now and are thinking something else may happen so alot of people i know are afraid to do the things they used to, such as fly. Now everytime i get on a plane i will wonder, am I going to die today? This scares me to death, not knowing how our lives could change in the next 5 or 10 years, we could have another full on war. They basically took away some of our freedom and our security in doing things. This makes me mad because they had no right what so ever to do this and they killed thousands of people in their way. I dont know anyone personally who died on sept. 11th but it still hits me hard what those people had to go through. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that all the firefighters and the police who attempted and helped to save people lives and those people on the planes who took over and diliberatly crashed it, as to not destroy anymore people's lives should all be remembered. I mean the people who died should to but these people should be specifically remembered as heros, becuase they made that horrible day a little bit better for some people by saving their lives, helping the wounded, unburing people, and just helping. These people are the real heros who stood in the face of danger, to help someone in need, even if it means that they might die. Yes i did fly an american flag, but it was a hard task because we had to serch for weeks just to find one, because everyone wanted a flag. I had a couple, my mom put one in front of our house and one on each of our cars. Yes my feelings have changed about the flag because now i really understand what the flag stands for, freedom. Which we can lose very easily and which we have, unlike many countries. This is one of the reasons we got attacked, they dont believe in our rights not only as women but as americans. So everytime i see the flag it just reminds me how lucky we are to have such a great country and how much freedom we have which we should hold so preciously. Curiously I asked her what had happened and come to find out a plane had crashed into the twin towers and my teacher turned on the tv and at first I didn't think much of it until I went home and watched the news. They were in NY brodcasting the show when someone told them to look out the window. They figured it was a small plane accident but when I heard the broken, serious, voice from the never emotional Mr. Stern, I new something serious was happening. It was incredible how the show switched to a somewhat live update on the ugly things that were happening. Nothing had prepared me for what was being broadcasted. I work in an office building and immediately rolled out as many televisions as I could find for everyone to watch in horror. If so, tell us how. I realise now how vulnerable we are. I appreciate life and especially my children more. I just pray we will have a better defense if something like this should ever haappen again. We saw the second crash live on T.V. and it hurt to watch. We were told by a fellow student who was down at the office when the news came on about the first crash. My husband and I had stopped for the night at a hotel in Minneapolis MN on our way home from a golf vacation with his sister and brother in law. I had stayed behind to watch the weather report while the others went down for breakfast. I had just turned on the news when a report of a plane hitting the WTC was announced. Then, as I watched the second plane fly as I thought by the building as the news reporter had just said that it was not an area where planes generally fly over, I yelled at the tv that there was another plane!! I panicked as I work for an affiliate of Morgan Stanley (Van Kampen Investments). In fact I was on their "Contingency Planning Committee" and I had left town knowing that two of my bosses were supposed to leave for New York that morning for meetings with Morgan Stanley. I immediately tried to call Van Kampen in Kansas City, only to find out that they didn't know what was happening, as one of the administrative assistants said "oh it's just a little plane and nothing major". I told her that I was watching on the tv at that very moment and that it was something VERY major! I tried to page my bosses but the nation wide pager did not go thru for about 12 hours. I finally located another associate who told me that my bosses did not leave that day for NY. Our plans were to stop at the Mall of America, but before we headed out of town, we heard that it was closed. We immediately headed south towards Kansas City watching the skies as we passed the airports. We were still in Iowa when we got a cell call from my mother in law to tell us to buy gas before we got into Missouri because they were hiking gas up to $5 a gallon. We stopped at the very next exit and purchased gas at a fairly reasonable rate. The lines were just starting when we left. The next few exits showed that everyone had the same idea. The lines were out onto the expressway. We made it home with a very sinking feeling. I returned to work the next day hoping for good news about the Morgan Stanley people that were in the WTC. I called our office in NJ and left a message on phone mail of the administrative assistant that I knew well, telling her that I hoped she was safe and that my prayers were with all of them. Later I learned that the NJ office watched the planes hit from their conference room meeting. Unfortunately 6 people from MS were lost. Thank God for Chuck Monroe just one of many of the contingency planning committtee who prepared over and over for Y2K. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. A Fireman's Funeral Like many New Yorkers I saw the planes hit as I turned on the television. I was looking for some distraction as I did my morning exercises. I couldn't truly comprehend what I was seeing. I watched for hours. My daughter, a high school senior came home from school about 11 AM. My husband, who worked for CBS, worked non-stop and wasn't home the first day at all. We wanted to do something. We didn't know what. A plea went out for socks and T-shirts. So Kadi, my daughter, and I went to a nearby store and bought as much as we could afford. We live about three blocks from the local firehouse. As we walked over with our bag, we saw people coming from all over: Central Park West, the projects. West End Avenue and Riverside Drive. People carrying bags and people carrying platters of food. The police precinct is next to the firehouse. Our neighbors streamed into these buildings with their offerings. It was very quiet. The cops and the firefighters gentle "thank you"s were easily heard. When we went in to the firehouse, we were greated and thanked but the moment that I remember most was seeing the empty boots of firemen standing next to the trucks ready for their owners to jump into them and rush to the next emergency. I thought it would break my heart. We love our firemen in this neighborhood. They wave to the little children and often set off the sirens for a moment...just for their delight. They collect food and clothing for the poor and open the firehouse to the neighborhood schools. The Fireman's Memorial is near my home and we yearly watch the service for the departed each Fall. The thought of the loss of so many brave men was unbearable. September 12, we held a neighborhood vigil at the memorial. We lit candles and sang. The Fire Captain came to thank us. We were all crying. Later in the week, as the enormity of the Fire Department's loss became apparent and funerals were being held. Mayor Giuliani asked those of us who could, to attend the funerals since there were so many and the normal service for a fallen fireman with thousands of their brothers in attendance were almost impossible. Three hundred and forty three funerals. The ceremonial units with the bagpipers and the Honor Guard were being thinly stretched. The Mayor wanted a large and dignified funeral for each fallen hero. They had divided up the bagpipers so that they could attend more funerals. They had hastily trained men to become part of the ceremonial units, but it was barely enough. A notice appeared in shop windows in my neighborhood, a funeral mass was to be held for a firefighter. I decided to go. The church, in the West 80's was full when I got there. The streets were filling up with local people who wanted to pay their repects. We learned that this firefighter had been a Marine, was married and left a wife who was pregnant and two other children. Standing in the street were police, firefighters and two buglers, one a firefighter and one a Marine. We could not hear the service but we stood there anyway out of respect and grief. The doors to the Church opened and the processional out of the Church began. The young firefighter's widow came first, being helped by her family. Then, the oldest child, a daughter, walked alone out of the Church, carrying her father's dusty, dirty helmet. With that, everyone was crying. I looked at the Marine Honor Guard. Big tough men, polished to perfection. Tears were running down their faces. Then the buglers played taps, the Fire Department bugler echoing the Marine. The casket was put on a flag draped firetruck and slowly moved away. At that moment, if I could have, I would have shot Ben Laden myself. I love this city. I love its people. I was born here. This is my home. I was so sad and so angry. I still am. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I am more fearful since the attack. I am certaily more angry. I am touched by the kindness of the people of this city and the nation as a whole. I got emails from all over the country (even from a lady in South Carolina from whom I had made an ebay purchase)! She wrote to ask if we were all right and to say that they were all praying for us. We have a home in Vermont. We went there after the attack. It was raining as we drove into town but standing in the rain were members of our laocal volunteer fire department with a fireboot out, asking for donations for New York City. One day, about 5 or 6 days after the attack, I was walking on Broadway and there was what looked like a parade. It was a group of firemen from Michigan who had walked here to raise money and to help. It was astonishing to see the outpouring of help, care and concern. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We should remember the innocent lives that were brutally taken. We should remember the goodness of the American people. We should remember the goodness of our friends throughout the world. I don't live in New York but i think i took what happen more serious than the kids in my class when we first heard about the events in New York. I live in Battle Creek, MI so there's no real big threat there execpt that i live by a airport and two army bases, on that day i was sitting in my 10th grade history class when the teacher next door to us was in our library and said he watched cnn and told my teacher about it. Then my teacher turned on the radio and we listened to what had happened and some of the kids started laughing about it and my teacher told them do you want to be in a war in the next years to come but i don't think they got it until when they got home. I was scared but i stayed at school. When i got to my next block my choir teacher didn't believe us so he turned the radio on and then next day he had an american flag in our room. I'm still affected by this i read books about it trying to understand what happened and why but i don't think will ever know why. I know if my dad was alive he would want to kick somebody's a** b/c thats the kind of man my dad was. He was in the army when he was younger but he still had it in him. I miss my dad so much. And when i read stories i want to cry all the time but i know i can't. I know i didn't experience what the people in New York, Washington D.C., and in P.A. but we all can say that our freedom was taken away and we can never feel safe b/c we don't want this to happen again. I can't say this enough I'm proud to be an american more than i ever did and i praise those who lost their lives, those firemen, policemen, and rescue workers and even the canine dogs. That nobody is safe and know that just cause we are out of the risk doesn't mean we let our guard down not now not ever and i mean it.The people that died that horrible day and everybody who has helped out they should all be remembered. I was currently in South West Asia supporting our military operation when we were so viciously attacked by these cowards. I had just finished my duty and was taking in some sun at the base pool; when suddenly I heard the attack alarms. I rushed to my tent not knowing what was happening. I donned all my required gear and headed to my post. When I got there everyone was glued to the TV; when I saw what went on I stood in disbelief and started thinking, "this has to be a joke". But it was not a joke, one of the mighty Twin Towers was hit by a plane. I thought it was a freak accident, when all of a sudden the 2nd plane hit the other tower. I thought, "Oh my GOD we are being attacked!" Right then and there I was beyond angry and beyond upset, I really cannot describe my emotions too well because I have never felt like tis before. Being in the military we are trained for alot of scenarios, and sometimes we (military folks) feel that we have the power to take the law into our own hands. Since we are trained to eliminate the enemy, we take that to heart. When I witnessed the cowardly attacks on the towers, the pentagon, and the heroic efforts of the passengers in Flight 93, I just said to myself, "I am in the military and I am ready to take all of those responsible and eliminate them from existence." I am proud to be serving in the US Air National Guard, especially in times like these that all of the people of the USA are looking to us (military folks) to not only protect them form any threats, but make those responsible for the Sept. 11 2001 attacks pay dearly! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have a better outlook on life and I am very much appreciative of my wife and kids. I thank GOD every day that they wake up alive and healthy to enjoy another day. I also stop and reflect on all the good that has happened to me. And of course GOD is first and foremost. I also stop and thank people who day to day go to work and execute their jobs proudly. Folks like the firemen, policemen, emergency workers, etc. I get choked up when I am in uniform and someone comes up to me and says, "Thank You, I feel safe knowing that you are here!" NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? All of those brave firefighters, police officers, port authority officers, and civilians who lost their lives at the hands of these animals should never be forgotten. I have several 9-11 books and I have read so many stories and it just gets to me all of the time. Those stories give me strength to perform my duty as an Air National Guard and to always keep in mind that there are a lot of people that depend on us (military folks). We will never let them down. As our President so elocuently put it, "We will not falter, We will not tire, and We will not FAIL" NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? I do not allow anyone around me to say negative things about our flag. When I see it waving I feel so secure and I get reminded that we are the land of the free and the home of the brave. And I am part of the brave. We are the bodyguards of this nation, this wonderful and graet nation, which I will always protect, even with my life! I got up for a normal day at school plus it was a wednesday which we normally started late than usual. The phone rang and I was nearlly on my way out the door. My mum quickly got me to come in for the news report which was on our channel one. It was like watching a movie simillar to Die Hard etc. I watched as the 2nd plane came into the other tower and knew then we are at war I couldny think of aything else but that. When I got to school everyone was talking about it I mean no one was left to wonder what had happened or not knowing of the events taken place, everyone knew. all day I was in suspense to watch what else had happened so far, we wern't allowed to watch tv becasue we had to get on with a normal days work. Yes very much so, It has made me feel more American eventhough a Kiwi all the way over in New Zealand. I mean when we heard I bet all over the world felt to be American, wanting everything to come over and help but the question was how? so all I could do was each day watch the news which was pretty much on for a whole of at least 5 days in a row. America should put it in the calendar for a national rememberance day or some sort just like veterans day, etc and put on the callandar for years to come so it reminds us to think and tell people what happend for the next generations to come. The main thing is about remembering all the people who were in the towers, the survivors, policemen/women, doctors, firemen/women, and everyone else who helped ease the pain, clear the area which is Ground Zero and many other places which were cleaned. At work, I was walking down the hall to the water cooler when I saw several people in the conference room watching the TV. All were quiet. I came on in the room, sat down and watched the news about one plane hitting one tower (accident?). Just minutes later, we saw the second plane hit the second tower (terrorists!). We were all in quiet shock as more people filed into the room. More and more news kept coming in all morning, third from the Pentagon and fourth from the Pennsylvania farm field. I know for sure now God has blessed America. Well one morning of 8th grade, right before i was about to get up to get ready for school my mom ranning yelling "Someone flew a plane into one of the trade towers". Of course i realy didnt know that much about the WTC, but was sooon to find out. I quick turned on my TV in my room to see what she was talking about. I saw the huge hole in the one tower, i was in aw. Then i herd a plane flew into the pentagon, then soon after i watch the second plane fly into the other tower. I then had to go to school, but none of the teachers were aloud to let any of the kids watch any of the coverage on TV. On September 11, I was in the US Air Force in a class that prepares military members for the transition back to civilain life. As I walked into class, the television was on. I seen smoke coming off of one of the Twin Towers. We all thought a small plane had accidentally crashed into the tower. Then, we watched as the second plane came and hit the second tower, that was when we knew for sure that was no accident. As soon as that happened, the teacher, who was a civilian, informed us that the base was immediately closing to civilians and that we were all to report immediately to our duty stations. (We were all dressed in civilian clothes, which was a requirement for the class.) That was when things got hectic. I went straight to my duty station, in my skirt and high heels and when I walked in, everyone was glued to the TV. We had to stay there for a few hours. We were all so much in shock. It didn't really hit us until all the work phones and personal cell phones started ringing like crazy. Our families and friends calling to make sure we were ok, and to tell us they were ok, and also to tell us of people that may not be ok. To tell us of family and friends that may have been in the towers. I know for at least two weeks my husband and I were glued to the television. Tears running from our eyes every so often. It was just such a sad sad time. It was so hard to see all of the people who were looking for their loved ones. I remember flying to visit my family soon after and just uncontrolably crying on the plane, just imagining how scary and horrible it must have been for all of those innocent people, and how unbelievably brave all of those men and women were on the planes that tried to stop those horrible men! Then sooo many people lost loved ones, some lost more than one. I also remember going to eat at a restaurant with my co-worker in our uniforms. A man came over and thanked us for all that we sacrifice for our country and he bought our dinner. That really touched us. I am usually in the building by 8:30, but for whatever reason, it was 8:45 and I was just turning the last corner to Frisby. I was listening to the radio, and they broke in with the announcement that CNN was saying that a 767 had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I work for an Aerospace company that makes parts for the 767, and my first thought was "God, I hope it wasn't one of our parts that caused the crash!". I walked into work and told some of the others about what I had heard, and they had heard it too. There was confusion about what kind of plane it was and all. We were all just going about our normal workday, making mention of it and wondering if anyone had heard anything else. Then, the girl that sat next to me was on the phone with her mother and yelled "What???!!! Oh my God!!! Another plane just hit the other tower!!!" We all just sat there in disbelief. It was at that very moment that I knew something was wrong. That is wasn't "just an accident". I knew that it was intentional, and I was mortified. I called my husband at work. They hadn't heard anything. So they did as we all did, and started getting on the Internet and listening to the radio for the latest news. Then it came, and came, and came. There was an hour of just one thing after another. The towers started collapsing...the plane hit the Pentagon...Pennsylvania. My oldest daughter (13 years old at that time) was home sick from school. I tried for an hour to get her on the phone. She had taken some medication that obviously knocked her out. I didn't want her to wake up and turn the TV or the Radio on and see what we were seeing. I wanted to tell her first. She finally answered the phone and I said "Baby, before you turn the TV on, I need to tell you that there is some bad stuff going on in our country. I need you to understand that you are safe." She listened, then while I was on the phone with her, she turned on the TV and said "Oh my God". That's all she could say. She watched as one of the towers fell. I hung up with her and we all started taking turns watching TV in our Conference Room. My daughter would call me with updates ever time she heard something new. The most hysterical call was when the plane in Pennsylvania crashed. She called me and said "Mom!!!! They're coming this way!!!" I've never felt so violated in my life. Never so mad. Never so scared. I assured her that she was safe, but how did I know? I didn't. I just did what any mother would do and comfort her in her time of need. I started receiving phone calls from friend asking me if I wanted them to go pick my children up from school. I told them NO. I couldn't leave work, and thought that the safest place for them other than with me and my husband, would be at school. Also telling them that my oldest was already at home. I was very impressed with the teachers at my daughter's school. My child (9 years old) went through the entire school day, and did not know anything. The principal had made the decision to let the parents tell their children of the terrible things that had gone on that morning. After speaking to my 9-year-old, I told my oldest daughter to turn the radio and the TV off and not to turn either of them on until AFTER my husband and I were at home. They'd had enough for one day. When my husband and I got home, we hugged our children and told them how much we loved them. What a day. One I will never, ever forget. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, drastically. I went to bed on September 10th with the feeling of being safe. I woke up to my worst nightmare. I was, all of a sudden, living in a country where I couldn't tell my children that they were safe from terrorism. I could no longer look at them and know that we were all going to be okay. I can't look at them today and tell them that nothing like this will ever happen in the USA. It already has, and they watched it. I am so angered by that. It's one of those days that will forever be burned into our History. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Of course all of the men, women and children that lost their lives, and their loved ones. I will always remember the feeling of complete "out of controllness" that I felt. I will always remember that I was thankful that George W. Bush was our President and that he was willing to stand up for our people and our country. He was willing to tell the world that we would find the people responsible for these acts. I guess you can say that I wasn't the most patriotic person in the world prior to 9/11. I didn't fly a flag, or where a ribbon, or have a magnet on my car. On 9/12/01, I, along with millions of others became the most patriotic person in America. I got the magnet for my car, I got the ribbon to pin on my shirt everyday. Oh yes, very patriotic. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was an ordinary day like any other at work. I work for the town newspaper. Somewhere between 8:30 & 9:00 a co-worker came running out of the newspaper and said that a plane hit the World Trade Center. So we all got up and went into the newsroom to see it on TV. As we are standing we saw the 2nd plane hit. It was the most unbelievable thing I ever saw on TV. As we are all watching this horrific thing happening, I looked around at my co-workers and there are no words to describe the looks on their faces. Just disbelief. I started crying and so did few of my other co-workers. I will never forget that image. All day at work that is what we talked about. My son lives in Chicago and I knew he was suppose to go to Iowa for business that day. I called his sister and asked her to check on him. Because I knew all planes were grounded. To my relief she called me back immediately and said he was driving to Iowa and not flying. I was relieved. The whole day was spent thinking about this terrible thing that was happening to my country. When the 4th plane hit, I kept thinking "What is happening?!" I cried. I was scared. I felt like I had no protection. As everyone is saying, that is a day you will always remember what you were doing, just like President Kennedy. It really hit my 10 year old grandson hard. I was in the Baptist Hospital Pre-op room in Knoxville, TN. awaiting a procedure on my back as the news first came in about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. At that point the staff and we patients all thought that a tragic accident had taken place. Within minutes word spread that a second plane had hit the second tower and all of us realized that this was an attack on America by terrorists, not an accident. Prayers were offered for those involved, tears were shed, and our world was forever changed. Just minutes before being "put under" for my procedure I heard the announcement over an operating room radio that a plane had also flown into the Pentagon. The doctor and nurses had been talking and missed the announcement and asked me what it had been. The next thing I heard was the doctor telling them to "put me under", my last thought was what kind of world would I be waking up to. And, when I woke up about an hour later it was to a very subdued staff and fellow patients. Later that day after I was released, we came home, watched television for a while and then headed to the Tennessee Valley Fair. The mood there was very un-fair-like, many people had stayed home, those of us who hadn't talked in disbelief about the events of the day. The sense of loss was very intense and wide-spread. It didn't take long for the citizens of my adopted home to begin efforts to aid in helping those personally affected by the events of 9-11. There was even a fund set up to purchase a new fire engine for New York City to help replace equipment lost. I stayed glued to the television for days, it was too sad to watch, but I couldn't turn it off either. My heart broke for those who had lost loved ones, friends, and co-workers. Because my youngest son is a volunteer firefighter in Michigan I felt especially sensitive to the New York firefighters, police, and paramedics. I have lived through the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert Kennedy in my lifetime. I can still vividly remember every moment of the day when John Kennedy was shot, just as I will always remember with great sadness the death of so many innocent people in the tragic aftermath of 9-11. It was the day that America truly lost it's innocence and learned what so many other countries in this world live with on a daily basis. It was a hard lesson, but one that served a purpose, it has brought Americans closer together and into an age where we are again concerned for our brothers and sisters. Patriotism was "born again", and hopefully will never be allowed to take a back seat in our lives again. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. 9-11 was a wake-up call for me, a reminder that there are no "sure things" in life. I don't take family, friends, or community forgranted anymore. It reminded me of what really is important in life...the people we love. It reminded me that no one is guaranteed a tomorrow, so it's important to tell those who are important to us just what they mean to us and how we feel about them. It reminded me of all the sacrifices made by so many over the years to keep America free. We may not do everything right, but I wouldn't chose to live anywhere else in this world. That we should never be complacent about our life here in America, we are just a vunerable as anyone else in the World. We should always remember the people who lost their lives, the "coming together of Americans" that those events started,the day we truly became "our brother's keeper". And, we should remember to give thanks to those that serve us, that put their lives on the line every day to help keep America a land that we can be proud of.
