I happened to turn on the news that morning as Matt Lauer and Katie Couric were talking about a plane hitting the first tower. As Matt Lauer was talking the second plane hit. It was then an awful realization hit that America was under attack. My daughters and I were watching in disbelief as this was happening. How can anyone say this is justice, that thousands of innocent people are murdered? Unfortunately for those who caused the attacks, it only made our resolve stronger and made us love our country more. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I now live in fear. We hear such ominous messages that America will fall and we haven't seen the last of the attacks on America. I know more attacks will happen and it leaves me with fear and dread for my children and grandchildren. What kind of world are they inheriting? But I have not changed how I live my life. I still do the same things in the same ways, but I am more scared of flying. It is terrible to live with constant fear that something will happen - wondering if you or your loved ones will be the next victims. When the attacks of September 11th happened I was in my math classroom here at Glen Este High School in Cincinnati. When the teachers first turned on the televisions I really think we were all in shock. Many of us unsure how to react and others thinking of family members who lived in the area of the disaster. I honestly believe I saw 1 million different emotions and feelings towards the tragedy just from walking down the halls at school. Every single student reacted differently. I personally at first did not know what to think. I was thinking of my cousin Troy as I heard about the pentagon because I knew he had been there earlier that week. The most important thing on my mind at that point was family. I just wanted to go home and watch the news, and that is about all I did for the next several weeks. Just trying to get all the facts to try and figure out for myself why in th world someone would do such a thing. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I think I just really respect life more. You never think of how easy it is for someone to take what you have until something like this happens. It's a real shame that it takes something like this to unite America but in all reality I honestly believe it did. I've never seen more people show love for their country in my life. I think it changed me by looking at stuff for other views. Mostly I just sit back and think of the things that are really important in life....and they aren't always the same as they used to be. It's almost like the Hitler situation. You learn from the past to prevent the same mistakes in the future. I think this taught the government a lot about how we were running our country and how it should be changed for the better. We all need to remember those who were lost and talk to those who made it out. I also think we should remember the pilot who took his plane down in a field, it took courage I believe. I think he took that plane down because he knew he was going to die and wanted to save the lives of others whom had no idea what was going on. Just remember it! He had been watching the morning news when the 1st plane hit the Towers, and he immediately called to tell me. While I was still trying to comprehend what he was saying, he watch the 2nd plane hit. Even as I write this, I clearly remember the emptiness in the pit of my stomach and it still brings tears to my eyes. When I hung up, I was the bearer of this bad news to my other coworkers. I frantically, and unsuccessfully, tried to find a working TV somewhere within the vacinity, so I relied on my radio. The news coverage felt almost like being there. Unable to concentrate on any work, I went home at around noon and spent the rest of the day witnessing this tragedy, via the TV, with my husband. I'm also paying more attention to what is going on in the Middle East, and I simply can't understand how human life can be so meaningless to so many people. The lives of all that died needless simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time should certainly be remembered. All of the people who gave up their life trying to save the others is a true show of heroism, and they should be remembered. The firefighters, police, and civilians who worked countless hours searching for life should be remembered. And, the surviving families of all who lost their life should be remembered. My Spanish teacher told us just to listen to the radio with her she looked like she was going to cry. I wasn't sure exactly what had happened. She wouldn't talk to us. But I knew it was something big and bad. After third period nobody talked about. My school seemed to be this happy little place where the twin towers weren't under attack. At the end of the of the school day I had more or less of an idea of what was happening. Hearing from friends and other students. My school made an announcement on the P.A. saying nothing important happened....I guess they didn't want us to worry. But they should at least tell us something instead of nothing. I still hadn't seen it happen on the replays. And since I didn't see it for myself I wouldn't really accept it. Until I got home... Because those were innocent people just going to work and doing what they normally did. I think we should always remember them. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had just turned 18 and moved out of our house with my boyfriend. I was 8 1/2 months pregnant. I woke the morning of september the 11th to the phone ringing. It was my mother. She was telling me to get over to her house ASAP. So i got up and got in the car, drove across town and when i got there, i couldn't believe what i was seeing on the tv screen. Replay over and over again of the first plane hitting the trade center. I flopped down in my chair unable to take my eyes away from the screen. She also had our home scanner on and we could hear the police and other rescue departments in our area discussing what was going on. You have to understand that we live in Illinois, and New York although in the united states seemed so far away at that moment. Then we began to hear things like, "they are locking down the Byron Nuclear Plant". They think it could be a target. At that moment my mother and myself started to really worry, because my stepfather was a management member at the nuclear plant. At that exact moment in time reality hit and it wasn't that New York was far away, it was like it was the next state over. Although worried we still could take our eyes off of the television. We then see the second plane hit the other tower. It was like disbelief had set in. You could see people running for their lives on television, and you could feel the threat that they were feeling. It was one of the scariest moments in my life. But it was almost like watching a tv show, one with a fake plot. You found yourself thinking that the show was going to be over and you were going to get a to be continued message on the screen. but we didn't then came across that a plane had crashed in a pennsylvanian field, then into the pentagon, and we really started to worry about an attack closer to us. I worked at a convenience store at the time. People were coming in and buying us out of everything, a man came in and said if you don't have much gas in your cars you better get to the gas station because our gas sources are going to run out. I looked down the street to the gas station and there were cars lined up for a mile and a half trying to get in. I just remember praying that i didn't go into labor on such a horrendous day. That I didn't want my daughters birthday to be a remembrance of something so bad. Now I think that it would have been ok for that to be her birthday, instead of remembering the terror, she could have remembered the heros and all the brave people inside the planes and buildings that were fighting for everyones lives. I will never forget this day, I will only try to forget the cowards who drove the planes into the buildings throwing away peoples lives like they meant nothing. Everyone that was there, the scared, the small, the weak, the fireman, EMS, and Police who risked and some even lost thier lives to save someone that they didn't even know. Share your experience. on the day the of the attacks, i was at school. during my third period class i was suddenly checked out. at first i thought i had an appointment that my mom had forgotten to tell me about, but as i walked down the hallway, i noticed a lot of the teachers bunched in a couple of rooms standing near the television and crying or staring blankly. as i was gathering my stuff, i thought of reasons why the televisions were on. on my way to the parent office to check out, i stopped andnoticed on one of the television screens two buildings burning, and then falling. the meraning of it all didn't hit me until i saw my mother's face as i came towards her. i asked her what was wrong, and she said that two planes had crashed into the twin towers in new york. now at that time i had no idea what the twin towers' importance was, so you could say i had no idea of what was going on. mom told me everything that had happened that morning. and when i finally realized what had happened, i asked her why she checked me out then. she reminded me that my uncle was in the army. and i finally started to get scared, for i was afraid that something would happen to my uncle if he was told to go help. when we got home, i turned the television on and watched the news the rest of that day. and all that time i kept getting a clearer idea of what was going on around me (for i had still no idea of how his affected me). and when the day ended, i took it all in and prayed for all the people who lost family and friends, and that we would pull through this ok. in the end, i know we will:) NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. since the event of the attacks, life for me has been the same, in a matter of speaking. i still have the same amount of patriotism as i have had before it, and still treat people the way i've always treated them. on the other hand though, i make sure that i say good bye everyday before i leave for school , and i don't forget to say "i love you" to my parents. and i do have a different attitude towards how i live my lifeand that i should do everytihng i can and treasure the precious moments. other than that, nothing else has changed. It was my second class of the day, the attacks actually happened as I was getting coffee with my friend. I walked into my Old Testament studies and everyone was talking about some plane crashing in the WTC. I was thinking that it could not possibly have been sucked into the building so I asked if anyone was really hurt. I also heard rumors that the National Mall was on fire and that the plane by the Pentagon landed in a side building. As you can see it was all speculation at this point since most of us were either on our way to class and it was all happening then or we had been in class earlier that day. My professor came in and said that we were going to have class since we can't do anything about it. He let us leave our phones on and during class one girl ran out crying because she couldn't get a hold of her mother who works in the Pentagon. Another student got a call during class mentioning the plane crash in Pennsylvania. After class I drove home and was shocked at the magnitude as I listened to the radio and then tuned in to Fox News Channel for the rest of the day. My Dad had to go to work at St. Elizabeth's and it took him about 4 hours to get to work when we live 25 min from the city. I watch Fox News Channel all the time and am really up on current events. It hit close to home as I lived in Northern Virginia. Like most people we hung flags and put decals on our car but for me it wasn't a fad but has remained a constant pride. I am an avid country music fan and songs like Toby Keith's Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue and Daryl Woorly's Have you Forgotten have been my mantra. I now live in Southern California and I can see the difference between the east/west coast rememberance of the event. At this time the first plane had already hit and I stood there in amazement as the second plane hit the second building. It was horrible to watch all of the innocent people dieing for no reason. I remember people walking down the halls talking about it. I remember staring at the television watching the planes hit the buildingsand also watching the replays of how the tragedy unfolded. The school told us that the television had to be turned off and that the teachers had to go on with the lesson as planned. It made me very angry because I think that we have a right to know what is going on. It was upsetting to see people crying and poeple worried about what would happen next. I basically didn't want to do anything but stay at home, where I knew I was safe. A few months after September 11 I had to pick someone up from the airport with my mom. It was very scary and i didn't know what would happen. A lot of those feelings have surpassed, but sometimes I even get scared when i hear a plane close by. I think that all of the people that lost their lives, either in the buildings, on the planes, all of the fire fighters, and all of the civilians, should be remembered. I will never forget all of the brave fire fighters and police officers that went into the buildings to save the people and may have lost their lives. I was in my daily routine in school, chemistry class actually, when my teacher told us the grim news that two world trade towers had been attacked by hijacked airplanes. The rest of the day was a whirlwind of events. Many students and teachers had rumors of what was going on and I wasn't sure of what to do. For the first time in my life, i felt unsafe. I remember seeing the graphic videos and photographs of the events on different news channels. The most important thing that should be remembered is the heroics and notion of unity. The firefighters showed more courage in that week than most people will their entire lives. What was most admirable though was that they were just doing it because it was their job, not because they were single-handedly saving our country. During that time, I was in school on this mournful tuesday, knowing it was my friend's birthday. Then, it happened. On the morning of 9/11/2001 my 17 year old daughter ran into my bedroom urging me to "wake up Mom.!!" (Living in America), a single parent, working Mom, the ONLY thing that could mean, (living in America), was that a birthday surprise was awaiting me downstairs in the kitchen. (Living in America), I excitedly jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs. Suddenly, before my eyes, (living in America) no longer meant total freedom. They would arrive at my home and live with me and my children and attend a school to learn English. The Students I would host came from Europe, Japan and Saudi Arabia. The student that stays in my mind the most is the student from Saudi Arabia, his name was Waleed. He was distant and very private I tried to make him feel welcome in my home. I was very anxious and did not feel safe in my own home after Waleed arrived. I asked my oldest daughter Sarah to be very caustious of him I could not put my finger on it but he was up to no good. After Waleed was with me a couple of months he started to open up and communicate with me more. He told me he had big family and his Dad was a very wealthy Saudi so wealthy that he built a mosque in his home town. He had lots of brothers and sisters and would talk often with them on the phone. It was a summer evening in San Diego and Waleed and I were talking on the back porch and he asked me if I was planning on traveling in 2001, on a plane, particulary back east, New York and Washington area I replied, "no". Waleed replied "oh good". From that point on I watched the news every evening to see if there was any mention of anything that had to do with planes, or the security of our country and there was nothing. I cannot put into words the anxiety I was feeling after that conversation but I knew if I let Waleed stay in my home I could watch him. Waleed left in September of 2000 to return home to Saudi Arabia. Then 9/11 happened and the questioned Waleed asked me about flying came flooding back. He knew all along that this horrible disaster was going to happen. I screamed and cried and then called the FBI who interviewed me twice. Never to hear from them again. I also gave them Waleed's photo. I still don't know if Waleed was one of the terriorst but if he was he resembles Wail on flight 11. See Waleed could change his appearance for just a few dollars. When he went to the passport office in Saudi Arabia he would have the photographer make slight changes to his face. One photograph he showed me didn't even look like him he said that day he didn't like his ears and asked them to be changed for the photo he also had the photographer change the shape of his nose. What ever he wanted would be done and could be done for a price. When Richard Clarks book came out a couple of days ago and he mentioned that our country could of done more I agreed completely. Two of the hijackers were here and he believed their faces should have been plasted all over our newspapers as "The Most Wanted" if that story would have been released I would of immediately have called the FBI and notified them about Waleed. That is why I am telling my story now in hopes that no matter how insignificate our government may think a threat is to notify the american people of any threats so we can all be watchful, it may change the course of our history. It was second period and Mrs. Nugent was talking to the class when Mr. Harlow came over from across the hall and whispered something to Mrs. Nugent. she quikly walked over and turned on the T.V. to chanel 9. That is when I saw those two gigantic buildings burning. I didnt know what to think. I was scaed, confused, and sick all at the same time. After leaving second period I went to third period to find out that the Pentagon has just had a plane crash into it. I got really worried now because my uncle works in the Pentagon. The news was kept on in the rest of my classes until we went home. I arrived home and then went to work and they also had the news on. About two hous after being there we heard a loud BOOM! Everyone was scared but we later found out it was a sonic boom so it was nothing to worry about. I watched the news the rest of the night. Someone came into the room and said a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Some of us got up and went into the lobby where many people were already gathered in front of the television. A few mintues later the second plane hit the other building. Chills ran over my body and I could no longer try to convince myself this was just some kind of horrible accident. I was crying then and wondering who in the world could have done this. No one spoke for several seconds then everyone talked at once. There were tears and anger at the loss of so many innocent lives. Little did we know that we would then witness the collapse of each tower and so many more people never going home again. I called my husband just to hear his voice and tell him I loved him. I called my best friend because her brother works in Manhatten and I was not sure where the office was located. He was fine but we cried anyway. Towards the end of the day we were asked to return to the semninar. It seemed so unimportant. I could not concentrate. It was awful and I just wanted to go home and hug everyone I know. Terribly sad that this could happen, here of all places. Miserable for all those people who lost friends/family members in this senseless tragedy. There are people out there that hate us enough to take their own lives in our destruction. Keep this event in the back of your mind as a rememberance and catalyst. But we always flew one for all the patriotic holidays. My husband is retired from the Navy. 20 years. We know a little about sacrifice and the price of freedom. I'm just glad he is home now. My father was in the service during the Korean War. He instilled a sense of what this country meant to him in all of his children. We have always cared a great deal about the flag and seeing it raised or flying in the breeze has been one of those things that put a lump in my throat and tear in my eye. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at work at a small post office in rural West Virginia. My son, who was working out of town in St. Louis called me to tell me he just saw a terrible accident on the news - a plane hit the WTC. I related this to my fellow postal workers; the phone rang again - my son telling me of the second "accident". We all looked at each other - and one of the rural carriers said, "two planes hitting those buildings is not an accident." Time seemed to stand still while we tried to comprehend this terrible realization - an intentional attack on thousands of Americans. Having just visited NYC a few weeks before, and knowing how large the WTC buildings were, I told my co-workers, "we will never forget this day." I am uneasy about flying now; wouldn't think of going to NYC this past 4th of July just in case of another attack. The loss of loved ones by the families left behind should be first; but the great efforts of the emergency workers during the gruesome task of trying to identify the remains of thousands of bodies should be memorialized forever also. We have an American flag flying in our yard 24/7 now; we used to fly it only on holidays. We purchased flag decals for our two vehicles. Very much so, even though I had the highest respect for our flag due to my father having served in WW II before Sept. 11th, I am much more protective about the American flag and what it stands for.
