It was the day my husband recieved his exit papers for the USMC. He was in Washington and I was in Florida looking at apartments, we were to move there in about a week. I woke up late that morning, around 8:45am, i had an appointment at 9:00am, so i never turned the TV on. when i arrived at the rental office the manager and the other office associates had a radio on and they were gathered around the desk. when i approched the group i noticed one of the ladys had tears in her eyes, she was gripping her throat and everyones eyes were wide with shock. they asked me if i had heard about what had happened, i said no and they told me that 2 buildings in NY had been hit and that an airplane just went into the pentegon. at first what they said did'nt make sense. then the Maneger asked me if i had to leave, she asked "did'nt your husband have to be there today" i had completely forgotton Joe told me he would have to go there to pick up papers before he left and that i could call him around 12pm. at that moment it occured that he would be in the building between 8am and 11am. I ran out of the office got in my car and quickly put on the radio station. i could'nt belive what i was hearing, tears strolled down my face and i kept saying in my head over and over. "Oh my god, I do not know where my husband is". i finally started the car but did not know where to drive, i was close to where my sister lived so i decieded to drive there. on the way there was news that a 4th plane had crashed. i was so upset i could not think, i had to stop the car. i pulled the car into a turning lane and put my head in my hands. a police officer noticed me and walked over to my car, he asked me if i was ok, i told him i was so upset i had forgotten where my sister lives. he calmed me down and asked what she lived near when i told him he recognized where it was and offered to let me follow him. when i got to my sisters house i didnt have to knock on the door, she swing it open and she had the telephone in her hand at her ear, she said she had been trying to call joe for the past hour and he was not at home. we both cried and held each other. joe and i had only been married for a year and 6 months. and i was afraid i would never see him again. my mother called and my father called. they too had been trying to reach my husband. the next time the phone rang my sister answered, it was joe, he told me he decided not to go the the pentegon, instead he was buying me a gift. he was at the mall and knew nothing about the attacks. my sister and i watched everything unfold on TV. my family is thankful we still have joe, but we also will not forget the families whose lives were changed forever. i thought i had lost my husband and for 2 hours it was a nightmare, i cannot imagine the pain the families of the lost souls of 9/11. only god can knows your pain but I will never forget September 11, 2001. The Terrorists that attacked our country wanted to kill innocent civillians as apart of there belief that america is the country of evil. they know that if they can scare a country into backing down they can accomplish anything. There is a time to be a pacifist and there is a time to stand together and say we will not be frightned, attacking our country can be met with only one thing we will not stand idle, we will seek you out and completely destroy you. I had a gay morning when I rode my bicycle 13 miles from Coney Island in Brooklyn to Manhattan to work in the Primary Election as a poll worker. In fact, I was tickled to be the only poll worker getting to work by bicycle while everyone else rode the subway and buses to Saint Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, north of the World Trade Center. It was the first time I ever waited so long to get an assignment to work in the election polls. When I stepped out the church, I saw a big gaping hole in 1 World Trade Center. To me, the hole was huge because it was at least 6 stories big. Next thing I knew a giant ball of flames exploded through 6 floors from the east side of 2 World Trade Center. I spent the rest of the day cursing hysterically. But I did not curse at my poll assignment. I was glad when the elections were adjourned. My bicycle made my travel much easier than any other way. Furthermore, I felt timid because I that if I was not hysterical and put on a cool head over my shoulders, perhaps I could have thought about asking to give help in the emergency. Also, I am downright appalled about the attacks on The Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes. My life has somewhat changed. Whenever I think of September 11, 2001, I become very emotional about it, even as a black young man. I feel awful about the attacks on the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, because I understand that there were people in those office buildings and in the jets. I don't "give a care" if any of those people were those who rejected my employment applications, because they were people. I do not wish evil on anyone. Talking about the attacks on America aggravates my nerves very much. Furthermore, I am proud to be an American. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I am the "Boy from New York City." Besides the attacks on America, I want us all to remember that there is hope for all of us who live in and out of America. God still loves us in spite of the tribulation we have undergone. On September 11, 2001, at 6:38 a.m. Pacific time (9:38 where all of this was happening) our phone rang. I have lived with my grandmother since my grandfather died in 1994. A phone call at that time of the morning is always bad news in my family. My grandmother picked it up on the 2nd ring, and I heard her say "That's terrible--here she is," and she was in the doorway of my room handing me the phone. I was already sitting up in bed and reaching for it--I grabbed it and said "What?" It was my mom, who lives across town. She sounded breathless and her voice was a little higher than normal: "Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center and then they bombed the Pentagon." I said "Bombed what?" (because I couldn't believe it). She started to sob a little "The Pentagon." At that, I was out of bed and running to the television in the livingroom. My niece was staying with my mom while she waited to move to New York to join her fiance, Tony. Tony was watching from the top of a building where he works and had called her on her cell phone and told her to turn on the news, a plane had hit the North Tower. She was watching and yelling Oh My God!--which woke my mom. They were both watching the news with Tony still on the phone when the second plane hit. They knew immediately it was no accident; after the third plane hit the Pentagon, they decided they should wake people. I watched the news and remember I kept saying to my mother "Do you know what this means? Do you know what this means?" Because somehow I knew instantly that this was from the Middle East and that in short order we would be at war somewhere, and that this battle would last for years and years. I watched the news while I got ready for work (weird--it never occurred to me NOT to go to work). I called my boss to ask him "Where are our guys? In relation to these buildings?" I meant our bankers, and the analysts who cover our company. I named firms: Deutsche Bank, CIBC, Lehman Brothers. He said right there, right by those towers. He asked if I was going to work. I said of course. He said he would meet me there. We just watched news all day, no work happened (everyone we would be working WITH was outrunning those collapsing buildings or trying to get home). Late in the day one of our bankers called and said his team was okay, they had outrun it, he was walking all the way home, he was calling from a bridge. I thought it odd that of all people, he called my boss on the other side of the country. I don't know if he just called everyone he knew that day, or if he was in shock, or if long distance was the only service he could get at the time. (I've never asked; he came out for a meeting a week later and his eyes were too bright and his foot never stopped tapping.) We stayed at the office until just about time for the President's address, then went home to watch it. I cried off and on all day. I slept with the television on in my room, and remember that I woke regularly during the night to look and see if anything else had happened. I watch the news every morning, ever since. A lot of people in New York think that we were not affected by that day; that we were not traumatized; that we don't know how terrible it was; that we tired of hearing about it in a year. That's not true. The press gave that impression, and the press decided when we would stop hearing about it. We were traumatized; we were neighbors that day; this country became much smaller, in an instant. The distance between Las Vegas and New York became about one block, as far as we were concerned. It was unbelievable, and yet it was inevitable. How did I know, that morning, instantly, who had done this? Looking back, I think it's because there were hundreds of clues pointing to this, in news stories going back years. It's been a long time coming. On September 10 on my local news radio there was a blurb about a high risk of a terrorist attack on US concerns in Asia, probably Japan. I think those sorts of stories and tidbits get filed away somewhere in your head and it all comes together when something like 9-11 happens. I don't blame the government--foreign policy and foreign relations and intel is not as easy as the 3 or 4 lines coming from a pundit's mouth on CNN. Our biggest disadvantages as a country are that we can't conceive of doing something like that to other people, so we never really believed it would happen to us. And that the enemy figured out all he has to do is use our virtues against us. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed, I think everyone's has. Even people who say it hasn't; we'll never feel quite so secure again. I know that I have tired of political correctness at the cost of safety; I really don't care if people are offended--if they fit the profile, I want them checked out. (If Irish girls had highjacked the plane, I would expect life to be a bit tougher for me and that I might be thoroughly searched before boarding a plane.) I have tired of the rosie outlook that got us here. It would be great if life were like the visions held by these idealists---but it's not, and it's frustrating to have known that eventually this would happen while they are so surprised. Life just isn't that way, and there will always be groups of people who hate other people and you have to be prepared to deal with that, not wish it away. I think the other thing that changed is that I'm more focused on things that really matter (my family, my friends, my time alone in beautiful places). I saw a lot of that in other people for a while, but they seem to have gotten over that, too. That part is a shame. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? What should be remembered about September 11th is that we were unprepared. We were unprepared, we were soft, we were unaware as a nation and that cost the lives of thousands of people. Not our culture, not our dominance in the world. I'm one of those who do NOT believe that because we are Americans we are bad. My culture is superior to a lot of other cultures out there (we don't castrate our pre-teen daughters, for one thing). What happened to us on September 11 was our fault only in the respect that we refused to see it coming and tried to wish it better, instead of dealing with it head on. What should be remembered is all the people who did their best that day---professional police officers, fire and rescue, even though they were petrified; office workers who tried to help each other when a sunny, routine Tuesday morning became something unreal; passengers on a plane who took a vote to try to control their destiny, even if they might not survive--all those people are heroes because they behaved well in horrible circumstances. You don't have to leap tall buildings to be a hero--just face fear and behave as well as you can in spite of it. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? The flag has always symbolized what is good about this country; the fact that even in Las Vegas people lined up to donate blood from their bodies, for people they would never know, on the other side of the country (worst tragedy of all, there was no-one to donate it to). Because flags have always identified members of a tribe, and no matter what ethinicity or religion we are, as Americans we are one tribe and that flag is our umbrella. There is not enough space here to say what September 11th was and is and will be; it's still too big to really absorb. I'm glad it's being documented now, while it's still fresh. I hope a lot of people have kept journals of their own. One more thing: May God truly bless all those people who perished, and help those they left behind. I came home from school to see my mom glued to the tv set, then i had asked her if the rumors that i heard in school about a plane crashing into the trade towers was true. As soon as those words came out of my mouth, i saw a rerun of it on tv. Even thought i had no clue what was going on I had this weird feeling in my stomach, like something wasn't right. I had been caught in a daze the whole time, my eyes as well as my mothers eyes were glued to the tv. It felt like hours but it was only a mtter of minutes, then the phone rang, it was my cousin, the next few moments i don't remember that well, all i remember was asking my mom who it was and why she looked how she did. Then as she hung up the phone, she burst into tears, it was my grandmother, she had been on one of the planes to go and see my other cousin. And that was all i remember about that day. My dentist came into the room and said that a plane had flew into the World Trade Center. I heard on the radio before I went to the dentist that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center, but I thought it was a small plane and it was an accident. The dentist said it was no accident. He said it was a hijacked plane. I left the dentist's office and went straight to my in-laws house and said turn on the TV. . .hurry and turn it to channel 12! We just sat there in silence. Then we witnessed the first tower falling. It was totally unbelieveable. I was eight months pregnant with my daughter, my seven year old was in school, and my husband was in Germany. He was suppose to fly home on September 15th since leaving just after the 4th of July. I returned to work after leaving my in-laws house and tried to call my husband in Germany, but the phone lines were tied up. I turned to my computer and wrote the words "CALL ME" in the subject line. He called me within 15 to 20 min. I told him what happened. He couldn't believe it. He said they heard on TV that a plane had flow into the WTC, but not much else. I wanted my husband home. I started calling airlines to find out what the next available flights were. . . . there were none. All flights into the US were grounded. . . .we started talking about flights into Canada. I was planning on driving to Toronto or Ontario to pick him up. My in-laws said they would go with me because I was eight months pregnant. I didn't have to worry though, they started to let a few flights into the US and my husband returned on September 16. I thanked the Good Lord for blessing me with my family. Unlike so many women on that fateful day, my husband was only delayed and I eventually got to hold him in my arms. Others weren't so lucky. Today is September 9th. September 6th I received an e-mail from our corporate headquarters telling everyone to take a moment on September 11th to remember all those that parished. I took that moment and called my husband to tell him how much I loved him. He wasn't there but I left a message. We have two daughters, Hannah 7 yrs old and Holli almost 11 mths. I remember the news was on the tv and the class and teachers were in an uproar.The first airplane had just crashed. Then in what seemed like seconds later the second airplane into the second tower . I've lived in and traveled in many countries around the world and survived more than my share of terroristic attacks and bombings. This one seems different though because I've never experienced a threat in the States, I always thought of the States as the "safe zone" that I could easily return to and not have to worry for the safety of my family and friends. September 11 brought back many emotions and memories from my past in both bombings and kidnappings in the Philippines and the Gulf War when I lived in Saudi Arabia. Having been through similar events I was able to cope much easier and help others understand what was happening but having an attack so close to home caught me off guard. I had spent all morning im my garden , tidying it up as the sun shone here in Scotland,U.K. we don't get a lot of sunshine and thats why I was enjoying all the peace and calm.. When my neighbour across the road came out and told me what had happened. I could NOT believe what I was hearing, I ran inside and switched my television on, I could only stare in horror and disbelief in what I was witnessing, was this REALLY happening, my god!! I was at work, I am employed as a Case Manager with the Virginia Department of Corrections, at Nottoway Correctional Center. It was almost 0900 hours, when my wife called me to say she was watching the today show, and they had sent a live crew to the WTC, as they had received reports of a plane crashing into one of the ETC towers. I ran and told several others that had tvs in their office about my phone conversation with my wife. This took me less than 5 minutes, by the time I had returned to my desk. My wife called me a second time to tell me that a second plane had crshed into the other WTC tower. One of my co-workers and I got the cable & electrical power hooked up to the tv in her office. We began to watch the horror of this tragic day unfold a piece at a time. This event caused the time calander with in me to stand still and then when my internal clock began to work again a minute felt like an hour, an hour like a day. This seemed to linger with me for the rest of the week. I will not forget the fear that it produced in my then 4 year old daughter Frances. I do not believe that she is over this experience a year after the events of tragedy on 11 Sep. 2002. I do not believe that I nor most Americans are over what happened to this great nation of ours one year ago today. I am a social worker and on that day, I was working at the nursing home I was employed at during that time. I remember our dietary manager calling us to the main room where the TV was showing the first tower on fire and we weren't really sure what had happened and we were on a station that was brodcasting the view of the first, when the second plane hit. I remember all of us crying and gasping when we saw that. My husband is a Corpman in the US Navy based at Camp Lejeune, NC and I was frantically calling him at work to see if he knew anything. He told me the sirens had gone off on base and they were all on alert but nothing was happening quite yet. All the administrative people eventually gathered in the main room and watching tv until something came up at work. As soon as we finished a task, we were back in the room. We were glued there all day. I remember crying and begging the Lord to save those people and watch over our military. It was the saddest day I've ever experienced. We are still hearing little rumors as of this day and so we're always on alert and always ready for something to happen. I had World History class that morning and before the professor walked in we all tried to find the news on the class TV, but there was no cable, so all we got was a fuzzy rendering of the kid show Teletubbies. We turned it off and waited in silence. Dr. Kittell gave a short speech, the kind every historian now dreams they gave that day (lesprit d'escalier I guess.) She told us that we could cancel class, we could go home and watch the news, but thats exactly what these attackers wanted us to do, the best way to recover our spirit was to refuse to let these attacks disrupt our daily life and our study of history. Then she spoke about how our country must not stagnate with the lust for revenge, how we must instead improve our foreign relations, our conscientiousness to other nations, and how our state should educate our citizens to think globally not just within the limits of nationalism. For the same reason none of my history professors canceled class that day. Still I could hardly concentrate. The student union had set up a projector in the main dinning hall. So many students gathered around staring. I immediately wanted to paint this image of a hundred faces watching the same thing; I bought a plastic camera and snapped a few shots from every side. By an odd coincidence the police were chasing someone outside who ran into the student union, where they tackled and arrested him. Nobody knew what it all meant. I got a few pictures, and have never heard about the case since. Walking back to the dorm that evening I tried to remember what Foucaults thoughts were about power and society, but it was over my head at the time. I looked up at the sky; there wasnt a single white jet trail, perhaps for the first time in decades. I thought about my father back home in Grangeville, I wondered if he was still flying since it was a busy fire season (hes a forward air observer on forest fires.) Had we studied ourselves a little more before 9/11, perhaps we would have thought beyond capitalism, border security, and defense budgets, to the lives around the globe that our every action affects. Perhaps we could have seen this coming. But a historian should never play what if. I am not saying that it is our governments fault that these murderers came upon us. We immediately went to the conference room where we have a tv. I watched and prayed as I witnessed this ungodly sight. I thought how can I help, what can I do? I felt helpless and frustated. My life has changed for the better, because I live now as though my life could end today. I try to never say or do anything that I will regret. I may occasionally fail, but I will keep trying to make others life better because I am here. I also try to make people laugh on a daily basis. I laugh at myself more often than I previously did, and I find myself laughing quite a lot. I tried to go in a restaurant with my umbrella still open, I still receive a chuckle every time I think of it! I have watched America unite together as only a country as great as American can. Flags flying have let the entire world know that terrorists have made our heart bleed, but we are still standing tall and have learned a valuable lesson about divided we fall and united we stand. The most important way that 9/11 should be remembered is that we are strong and can become stronger in spite of the terrible loss of life. We need to depend on God more than we have in the past. Our American history is built on: In God We Trust. Our money has that motto and God is a great part of our heritage. We should be tolerant of other people's religious beliefs, but the majority should rule about what is in the courthouses including the Ten Commandants and saying the Pledge of Allegiance, including "Under GOD", whenever it is appropriate." NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was in class when the whole thing happened. I was very scared when we turned on the television in the class and I saw people running down a street in New York and I saw planes crash into the Twin Towers. The whole thing seemed like was NOT really happening. I had to call my mom to see whether or not she heard about the whole thing at work, and cause for some reason, I did NOT feel safe at that point at school. We watched that the whole day in every class for updates and info. I will always remember that day sitting in class on 9/11. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yeah and no, because I wasnt in New York when the whole thing happened. Now, I was there and the whole thing happened? Than, thatd be a totally different story. Yeah though because I still seen everything that happened that day, and I mean everything! No, because the whole thing would have changed my life more if I was there when it happened because I would of actually seen people reactions on the street when they were running down the street and I would of seen more than I did on television. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Everyone that died should be remembered cause they were innocent people that did NOT deserve to die. I think I will remember this until I die cause I will always have that picture in my mind of the Twin Towers collapsing. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. September 11, 2001 was a very scary day at my high school. My principal came on over the PA system and announced that their had been two planes that crashed into the twin towers. We were all shocked. My principal encouraged our teachers to keep teaching and he would keep us informed. His plan went pretty well until he made his next announement. A plane hit the pentagon. He told us what had occured, who they thought had done it and what plane number it was. He also told us that we were allowed to use any phone available to us to contact our families. A few girls in my class began crying and saying that they needed to go down to guidance to call their parents who worked at the pentagon. I was really scared. My dad occaionally visits the pentagon and I figured that he may have gone down there that day. At lunch, I went into the office and tried to call my dad's cell phone; there was no signal. Then I tried to call my house and my brother picked up the phone and told me that my father was okay and wasn't anywhere near the pentagon. My mom was in Arlington and felt the ground shake when the plane hit. I am thankful that my family is safe and I thank God that I have them still. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed since September 11. I have a lot more pride for my country. I believe in America more and have faith in her. I want to kick some butt, but I know I have to leave that up to the people in the armed forces. I also respect people in higher places now. I can't thank the rescue workers, armed forces, families, and the President of the United States for their sacrifices. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think everything should be remembered. I think new textbooks should have a few pages with the vicitims name, age, where they died and what profession they were. I think we should have a memorial service every year in honor of it. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I did fly the American Flag after the events, now we never take it down. We have it sttached to the top of our garage and have a spotlight on it so the people passing my hosue can see it. My feelings have greatly changed toward the flag. I love it now. It's a symbol of our freedom and strength. It is also a symbol of unity. I feel comforted at the sight. I was in my second period class when the second World Trade Center was hit. I was still in second period when the third plane crashed. I was in third period when the fourth plane crashed.
