Though I was in DC, I was on the other side of the city from the Pentagon. Yet, upon hearing of the attacks, I felt I couldnt be any closer to the scenes. Lest we forget, though we all hoped the scope of the attacks were limited, we had no knowledge of the extent of the plot at the timethe entire East Coast could have been a target. I was at my desk for my current employer, Cafe Deluxe and Tortilla Coast Restaurants, when my co-worker, Heather, sitting catty-corner to me, got off the phone with her mother and turned around to announce a plane had collided into one of the WTC towers. The few of us in the office did not seem to think of it as anything other than a tragic accident. So, without much comment, we all turned back to our work. We must have all been thinking about what happened because there was barely a peep until Heathers mom called again and she started crying. We all stopped, waited for her to put down the phone and tell us another plane crashed into the second tower. I immediately thought this is how it must have felt upon the news of John Kennedys assassination. It wasnt until the benefit concert that the shock finally started to fade and the reconciliation process begin. When Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Bank kicked off the program with My City of Ruins, I knew everything was going to be all right, that Americans would feel the same way and pull together towards the common causes of compassion and humility. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at online at work, in a town 80 miles north of NYC. A friend of mine instant messaged me with the news that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At that time, it was unclear whether it was an accident or not. Being my home was only around the corner from my workplace, I ran home to watch the news on tv. It didn't seem like I had watched but a minute when the reports came in that the 2nd plane hit. I sat there glued to the tv, completely in shock, especially when the news reported these were passenger jets filled with innocent people. As I watched the buildings fall, I said prayers for all the lives inside, hoping against hope that everyone made it out alive. Since the attacks, I have become a lot more patriotic than I was, proudly displaying the US flag at my residence and on my car (which has been on display every day since). Although I was already religious, I have spent a number of times praying for the souls lost, and for their families left behind. I have also been working at establishing a closer relationship with my family. I appreciate life a lot more than I had. I think the patriotism and the openness to discuss religion that followed the attacks needs to be remembered, not just once a year, but EVERY day. This not only needs to be remembered in honor of those lives who were senselessly lost, but for ALL of us who remain behind. We are ONE nation, and need to be one for always. She worked us to hard and the only person Id known had just switch out. So I was forced to sit all by myself looking at a computer for half the year. That was my "big"crisis". That was until Mrs. Simon left the room and didn't return for 15 mins. It was nothing out of the ordinary, we just thought it had to do with BPA stuff. 15 minutes pasted and Mrs. Simon came back in. She started to leture to us about Microsoft Word but stopped mid-sentence. She said it wasn't fair to us not to know what was going on. she then told us calmly that the WTC in NY and the Pentagon had had planes crash into them. Now being from Massachusetts, to me, there are alot of WTC buliding so that didn't impact me when she said "WTC" but the Pentatgon was big deal. So we took a vote and decided to go watch Tv in the other room. I started to watch teh Tv and realize that i did know what the WTC buliding were. They were two symbols of NY that you can't miss cause they tower over NY. But when I watched the TV i could only see. I only saw one tower. I was dumbfounded cause i knew there were 2. So i tried to look into the dust cloud but there was only one tower standing. A WTC tower taht tower any buliding I have ever seen, had followen to tthe ground. I overact I think but low flying planes scare me now. When ever the speaker goes on in school I wait for Mrs. CArlson to tell us bad news about sone other peopel dieing. I sign on to Boston.com evryday expected to see a bullet saying "a national tradedy" Loud. crashing noises scare me too. I was lucky, only one person I sort of knew was truly affected my teh tradegy but it seems everyone was effect just as much. My dad came into my room to wake me up, told me to come out to the television and see what was happening. I woke up to a tower of the World Trade Centers on fire, with unsure reports of what was happening. Lying down on the couch, I immediately sat straight up and watched as another plane hit the other tower of the World Trade Centers. I spent the rest of the day glued to the television, as more terror unfolded, and speculations went flying. I thought for sure this was going to be the end of the world as we know it, and the start of a war that I wasn't sure how to describe. I finally pulled myself away from my house to sit at a park, on that beautiful Sept. 11th day... and try to regain my thoughts. I had to actually tell myself what I saw wasn't fake, and the worst feeling of hopelessness entered my body. I thought this was the end.. my world, although not affected physically by the events on September 11th, was mentally jarred loose. It's about the innocent people who die every day, and that remembering their spirits and the lives they led before there death are more meaningful than how they died. That is one family, one world, one universe that has been shattered, and face with the confusion of not knowing exactly how their love one passed on from this life. Remember that one person, and then remember there are 3000, 10.000, 100.000 other innocent lives that have been taken from this earth at the wrong time. Remember that there were people inside those buildings, those planes.... your wives, your husbands, your neighbors, your best friends, your sons and daughters, your grandchildren, your brothers and your sisters... That's what was lost that day. So many people who were just going to work for the day. Ordinary people who went through security at the airport and had no idea what was going to happen to them. God has nothing to do with this.. we don't have some superior force only looking after the US We've made a mockery out of our flag by just flying it in our car windows and work windows for probably less than 4 months after 9-11. Funny how patriotism wears off after time. Everyone's taken down their flags, everyone's taken down their United In Pride feeling, and what's left is rude drivers with "God Bless America", "Power of Pride" bumber stickers giving you the finger as they pass you. I'm proud of this country in the fact that yes we do have constitutional rights, one of which is freedom of speech. I love this country. But I sure as heck don't need to wave a flag to pride myself of it. Just like America to show materialist value of pride.. through our flag. The pride is inside, and the way to show it is by being a true American and helping out your fellow man. It's not judging people, it's not questioning if gays should marry, it's not questioning if we should spend 80 billion dollars in Iraq. It's pride in the fact that we stand as one united world. It's the feeling that everyone is our neighbor. It's the feeling of questioning your government when you're unsure of what's going on. Can I fly a flag when we have a war that is killing innocent people? yes.. but only because I support those men and women who were called over there, and who are dying over there. For their freedom, and their chance to come home.. I'll fly that flag. But I won't fly my flag for the corporations and government that runs this country, and is ruining foreign communications. I was in my second period science class and and an anoucement came over the PA telling the teachers not to turn on their T.V.'s and if theirs was on to turn it off. We were done with our work and just waiting for the bell so we turned on the telivision and right the exact second we turned it on we saw the second plane hit the trade center. My class was is disbelief, so was I. At first I thought it was tamperd with but when they showed their prediction of how many people were in the building and how many would never leave. I had just logged on to the Internet and was visiting a discussion forum that I was a co-moderator of at the time, and the first discussion I saw was called "The World Trade Centers." I clicked on it and read with horror that a plane had crashed into one of the towers. I immediately turned the TV on and tuned in to CNN... and I don't have to tell you what I saw. I was glued to the TV for the entire day. I remember at one point in the early afternoon, I stepped outside to have a cigarette and I burst into tears while I was sitting there. And then I had to pick up my son from school. He was 6 years old at the time, and I had no idea how I was going to explain what happened. I reminded him of how we had gone to see the Statue of Liberty the summer before, and asked if he remembered seeing the two tall buildings across the river. When he said yes, I told him that the towers had fallen that day. His response was, "Well, why don't they just re-build them?" I found that really touching for some reason. I thought, how wonderful it would be able to view the day's events from a child's perspective and not realize the horror of what had transpired. This morning we talked about it again. We observed a moment of silence together and then I explained again what had happened that morning. This time I think he understood it a bit better, and it felt awful to come to that realization. I was still a sleep in our home with our daughter, my husband and son had been out for a early for breckfast.... My husband came running into our bedroom and said "We have been attacked" ! Before I could sit up in my bed and wake up compleatly our TV was on and I was seeing the attach unfold, then the first Air Plain had hit! I remember saying "Oh my God!" I grabed my daughter and son and we all sat there in disbelif, shock, glued to our TV. For the rest of that day, a very long day, and the days that followed I stayed inside. I had to drag my self out of bed and barely got to school on time. I went to my first block, which was Spanish with Mrs. Kingsley. We were checking some homework when some senior came into the room telling Mrs. Kingsley that something happened to the world trade centers. At first I didnt think much of it, until I went to 2nd block math with Ms. Duncan, and she came into the classroom and turned on the television. Then I saw the first tower get hit by a big airliner. I was shocked, confused, and flabbergasted all at the same time. I just didnt know what to think. Then the second plane hit the other tower, it looked even worse. We all were confused at what we had just seen happen in front of our eyes. Some asked, Did that really just happen? There was an eerie silence that went all over the room at once. Then a little after that happened it collapsed, and the 1st tower followed. I thought if they got hit like that, they would have fallen over but they collapsed inward. I wondered if any one could have survived such horrible catastrophe. And if they did what condition they would be in. I didnt learn until about five minutes later that it was not an accident and that terrorist had hijacked a plane, then on CNN about the pentagon. For about a week it didnt seem it was real, I would hear more about it television but it seemed so far away. Like it didnt happen at all. There were lots of people that had love ones that died. In a weird way that made me appreciate my parents and my sister, and made them not seem as bad. There were lots of people on television talking about their family members who were businessmen and firemen who died saving other peoples lives. This made me wonder if I could have done that. When I think back to when it all happen it brings a lot of pain and sorrow. To think that all those innocent people died because of some differences between two countries. At first my teacher just told us that a plane hit the world trade center. I had no clue where that or what that building was. At first I thought it was just some small little one engine play, then about and hour and a half later in my 3rd class, we watched the T.V. I was really surprised when I say that they where commercial airlines with people on them, flighing hundreds of miles right in to a building with even more people. I didn't think i would ever fly on an air plane after i saw what happend. When i did though, i had that little thought in the back of my head that i tried to get rid of. I know that i will always respect every fire man,every police man,every medical person,and just every person that helped save as many people as they could. A Day to Remember BY: Amanda Britton Sitting in my Data Processing class, first block, I heard the rumors of a plane crashing into the World Trade Centers. I thought that it was all a joke and that this could never happen. I started to get anxious and wonder what was happening. My teacher quickly turned on the television and we watched in amazement. I still, after seeing the news, didnt believe that it was true. I thought that nothing like this could happen to America since we are so powerful and ahead of all the other countries with our strong military. The bell rang and students filled the hallways and were telling the stories that they had heard. I felt overwhelmed. I must have heard 10 different ones. I got into my gym class and our teacher said that we didnt have to dress out today that we were going to watch the news. I was glad about that. We all went into a classroom and began to watch the news. No one said a word. Everything was silent. I remember feeling terrible for a teacher whose husband was a pilot, and she was frantically trying to get a hold of him. She couldnt ever reach him, until finally I heard her let out a big sigh and she had reached him. I watched the news for the rest of the day in all of my classes, and we discussed what had happened. There was a gloomy feeling over the whole school. We continued to watch the news for the rest of the week and some of the next week. When I went home I would watch the news and they were trying to figure out who and what kind of cruel person would do this. I would hear the tragic stories of people who had lost loved ones and it would make me want to cry even though I didnt even know them. Then I would hear the heroic stories some of the firemen and police officers had to tell and it made me feel more patriotic than sad. I was just beginning to process what had actually happened. There were many rumors of many things that people that had went on, but finally I got down to the truth. At 8:46 a plane that had been hijacked flew into the 2nd WTC tower. Some people who were in the building said that they thought that it was a bomb. This was probably due to the fact that there was a bombing in the WTC before. Then there was an announcement that someone actually made over the PA system that said for no one to exit the first tower and that everything would be okay. Then a second hijacked plane hit the other tower. There were people scattering everywhere, and tons of fire fighters, policemen, and rescue workers ran to the scene to help and try to save as many lives as possible. Then a while later we saw on the news that a hijacked plane had hit the Pentagon. This one did not do as much damage and we didnt lose as many lives. It wasnt that much longer before we got news that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania, which they believe was headed for the White House. Many people lost their lives due to the acts of Osama Bin Lladen. I was thinking how terrible it was that because of the hatred of one man that millions of lives had to suffer. I was talking to people around me and they had bitter in them towards him to and this was the first that they had ever heard about him. There was no reason for him to do the things he did. It is just true hate in his heart. Even if he does hate America there was no reason for him to kill innocent citizens. He couldve done something to our government and not innocent people. The things that he did has made America hate him, and we are going to seek revenge on him. Since the attacks on America I feel that I have become much patriotic and I have become much more aware of my surroundings. The security has gotten a lot better too. The airports are very secure and you have to go through many metal detectors and policemen searching you to be able to get onto the plane. Many people blame the reason for the hijackers getting on the planes on the airports poor security. So now they are cracking down on their security. They are doing this everywhere in the U.S. not just in New York. So the whole U.S. has changed. I think that we are prepared now, and that I am prepared for an attack on Osama Bin Lladen. I was married on Sunday and awakened early with delightful ideas revolving in my mind of what to do with my new husband and our time alone. I never thought my honeymoon would be spent watching live the horrific scenes from New York for days. As the second plane came across the screen I realized as millions of others did that this was no accident. I instantly thought of our best friend who is an American Airlines pilot who flys many of the trips from New York to the West coast. I was the one who had to call his wife and ask where he was. The answer was not one I wanted, "New York". She had not had the television on and was unaware at that early hour of what had happened. She was fairly sure that his departure from New York was set for evening but she didn't have his flight schedule. The next few hours were a miserable waiting period. With the fall of the WTC also was the cell phone service. Calling my friends phone produced direct connection to voice mail. American Airlines was doing the best they could to locate crews in New York. Luckily my friend realized he had many messages on his cell phone. He was unable to dial out and went outside the hotel to try his cell phone hoping to get a better signal. As he realized he had no signal he looked towards Manhattan and saw smoke. He still had no idea that a few miles away disaster had struck. Once he found a working phone, he called his voice mail and listened to all of his loved ones asking where he was and was he ok. Only then had he realized that planes from his airline had been used in terrorist attacks. With my friends wifes relief of knowing her husband was albeit stuck in New York but safe came the realization that any number of friends and co-workers were lost. Fear was now replaced with a deep sense of sorrow. Meanwhile I realized that some of my friends who had traveled so far to celebrate our wedding vows were scheduled to depart that afternoon by airplane. The airlines closed and my friends were few of the thousands of travelers who were stuck. Many more hours were filled with trying to find out information for traveling or car rental while we gathered to watch endless hours of broadcast. I will always remember my wedding and memories of love, family, and security that I felt that day. I also know that the days after will be forever imprinted with the new feelings of fear, sorrow, and the guilt felt for being lucky. I refused to fly for any long distance. My 16 year old son was invited to Washington DC in October for a national young leaders conference. I debated for days whether he should be allowed to go. I listened to all of the politicians who suggested that terror was the results after as well as during an attack. It was decided that my son should travel to the capitol. The day he departed I was so overwhelmed with fear and tears that a friend had to take him to the airport without me. I was told that it was a good thing I did not go to the airport because the site of the National Guard with there guns would have distressed me even more. When he returned the following Monday the news media was reporting the anthrax found in the capitol. My son had been through numerous buildings to meet our Nevada senator and representative and watched the senates discussion on pilots caring guns. He couldn't remember all the buildings he had been in. Hour after hour, day after day, I watched and read any news I could about the anthrax and where they found it. I watched my son carefully every day. Offices that I knew my son had visited hadn't reopened. A week later I was in a doctors office with him having a swab test for anthrax taken. The following week he had such a severe headache for 3 days that I returned to the doctor. Again, I was lucky and found that a virus with many symptoms of the anthrax had been spreading around our small town. He was safe and healthy. As the months have progressed I have settled back into my routines. I have a new awareness that whether you are in a large city, small town, eastcoast or westcoast every person has been effected in some way by these terrorist attacks. Those who gave there lives and those who fought to save lives. The way "americans" became one. Many ethnics, religions, and skin colors are now joined as "americans". I was feeling what I think many of us were feeling, a tremendous amount of sadness and disbelief, I was woke at 10am in the morning by my mom screaming over the telphone to turn on the tv. There it was a nightmare, our countries freedom was attacked by terrorists. It was selfish but I thought it's my birthday today, I can't believe it. My significant other was very distraught, Manhattan was where she grew up and her family lives there today. Her sister and her brother work around and in the World Trade Center. Thank the Lord that her siblings were not at work that day. For hours we panicked trying to get ahold of our family in Manhattan. Everytime I think about September a million emotions run through my mind. I think why such a thing could happen to so many innocent human beings. I was sitting in my Geometry class and this girl comes in the class and was like a plane hit one of the world trade center towers. Everybody in the class was like "What stupid idiot would hit the tower" I mean you got to be stupid to hit that big building. And then the teacher turned on the Tv and thats when the second plane hit the tower. And this boy was like something is wrong. I think were getting attacked. And everyone got scared because I live in North Carolina and Fort Bragg is one the biggest army bases and we thought we were nexted. And when I went to my 5th period thats when they said another plane was taken and was flown into the pentagon. And I was scared because my cousin works in the pentagon. Thank god, she wasn't a work that day. People were being checkout of school because they knew we were going to war. So parents came to get there children so they could say to goodbye to their parents who were in the military. I went home and turn on the tv and learned everything that happened. I just got back from morning Track practice, turned on he television to see how the weather was going to be for the day and on every station was the first tower with smoke coming out of it. As I watched, I saw the second plane crash into the next tower. I watched the whole thing on tv, watched everything as it happened, the second crash, the towers fall, everything. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, I had an American Flag, or a pictre of an American flag on my car, in my room, and hanging out my window. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My wife and I were just getting ready to leave for the day and I was watching CNN News. They had just reported the first plane to attack the WTC and I called my wife into the room to view the horrible scene. We both we watching when the second plane appeared on the screen and then out of view; we thought that it was a plane in a regular flight path and only seconds later realized it too attacked the other tower. We watched CNN for the remainder of the day and were transfixed to the images we were watching. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have been deeply moved by the courage of all the emergency workers who lost there lives that day. I am a retired police officer from South Florida now living in North Carolina. My wife and I have joined the volunteer fire department in our town as some small measure to give back to our country, albeit a small town volunteer fire deparment, and remember all those brave souls that were lost. I have flown the flag every day since September 11th and will continued to do so. I have always been a patriot, I always get the chills up my spine and tears in my eyes whenever the National Anthemn is played so that hasn't changed. I do know that we live in a wonderful country and that nothing will ever diminish the American Spirit.
