The whole day we were watching the news on TV. I was scared that something else was going to happen and an hour later a plane crashed into the Pentagon and then a plane crashed in Pennsylvania. I had never seen anything like this before and I wish that I will never have to again. I saw history in the making and it wasn't a pretty picture. In my opinion that is very special because I think that God saved all of the other workers that didn't show up to work in the Twin Towers that day. I also think that people should remember how the firefighters and all of the other people who helpd to try to save all of the people. On the morning of September 11th, my friend Jason and I, sophomores aged 15, were conducting our first Chemistry Lab up in the Boston College High School Science Department which seemed, at the time, the most significant thing I would do all day. Around nine A.M. my chemistry teacher, Mr. Conners, announced,"Do any of you guys remember the Oklahoma City bombing a few years back? Maybe you folks are too young, but anyways, the World Trade Towers in New York were hit by a plane, and it's almost like Oklahoma City. They don't think it's an accident. I'm going to the office to watch this on T.V., so you're free to leave." At first I envisioned an airplane stuck in the World Trade Center, just another freak event akin to the protester whose parachute had gotten stuck on the Statue of Liberty. Only until I reached the school library did I realize what had happened. The atmosphere inside the library was eerily quiet, as the silence immediatly told me something was terribly wrong. About fifteen students and two faculty members were huddled around a solitary computer, with faces that could not seem to comprehend the disaster at hand. The moment I saw the computer screen showing a picture of one of the World Trade towers with a gaping hole about twenty stories wide, everything that I was thinking about and worrying about blanked out and was replaced by a feeling of insecurity that told me that our nation was under attack. The web-site (Boston.com, as cnn.com and other prominent worldwide news services seemed to all fail at the same moment) had streaming headlines on the attack on the United States. First it announced two planes had hit the WTC. Then, the Pentagon was attacked about ten minutes later. We were informed almost instantly after that a plane had crashed near Pittsburgh and now there were approximatly twenty hi-jacked planes in the air. What was next? Strangely enough, even though I was in the city of Boston less than a mile away from a thirty story natural gas tank, I never thought about my city being hit next. All our classes were devoted to 9/11 that day (except Algebra II for some reason) and gave me some thoughts that I had never really had to give thought to. We were at war, and our nation was attacked on its homeland for the first time since 1941. Where would we fight? Will this happen again, near me? Will there be a draft? What are we going to have to sacrifice? There were a lot of questions that day. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My perspective changed on my view of the world. Up until 9/11/01, as a 15 year old, my life revolved around sports. The Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics were the most important things in the world. For the first time, I was able to block sports out, and really think about the world I live on. For example, from that day on, I made it a priority to read the Boston Herald's national and international news before anything else. I also matured a lot from everything surrounding around 9/11. Hearing those stories about everyday people at work becoming the targets of war made me think that it could be me next. Of course there is increased security and things like that, but for me the internal changes were most significant. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we should remember the souls of the men and women who died and the firemen and policemen who gave up everything to save lives. September 11th should also be remebered as an example of what can happen if we lay down our guard. Another lesson learned is how we can come together as a country in times of crisis. On the Friday after 9/11, we lit candles and waved a flag to the traffic driving by our home. My father, one who prides in his American citizenship greatly, always flew the flag, even before 9/11. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was lying in my bed sleeping quietly and all of a sudden my dad came in and shook me. He said there was a tragic even that had just occurred in New York. I didn't know what he was talking about so I just got up and went out to the living room. About twenty seconds after I walked in I saw the second plane run right into one of the World Trade Centers. I stood there just thinking it was some kind of movie on HBO. But, when I turned around and saw my mom crying on the coach I knew that something extremely serious must have happened. I was stunned, not knowing really what to think. I knew what had happened but I hadn't taken it in completely. The next day at school I learned more of what happened on the tragic day in America. That people on the top floors were actually jumping out of the windows because they new they were going to die no madder what. I couldn't understand why someone would kill himself before they needed too. But in a situation like that I guess you would panic and not think. Watching the television people who had lost their loved ones in the incident. I still remember there was this woman who was talking to her husband on one of the flights that crashed into the WTC. She was talking to him and all of a sudden the line went dead. I couldn't imagine how incredibly sad she must have been. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? My life has changed slightly because of September 11, 2001 I am now I am thinking about how people could get guns or bombs onto a plane and drive it into a building killing many people. Close to the hijacking of the planes on 9/11 I had to go on a trip to Singapore for my braces in a week or so after. On that flight I felt kind of weird getting on a plane right after planes being hijacked a week before. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that people should remember all of the family's that have lost loved ones on the terrible, hatred day. Of how children at the age of one to three years old have lost either their mom's or dads. They will have to grow up with out having a parent around to help you with some of the situations. I also believe that people should remember how much hatred the hijackers of the planes must have felt to kill not only themselves but also thousands of other completely innocent people. Yes, we did fly an American flag after the events of September 11th. Even though we were in a Muslim country, we still put up the flag. Soon after the company asked all of the residents not to put up an American Flag for safety reasons only. I was in my 3rd period biology class carrying a slide back to my desk when the substitute teacher told us that she received a phone call that her son (who was in NY) was ok, I didn't understand. Then she said that we were being attacked by terrorists. We turned on the t.v. to find that the first world trade center had been hit by a plane yet remained standing while burning. A few minutes later, we saw, live, the second world trade center get hit by a plane and begin to burn along with the first one. As soon as the two towers went down, it was so hard for me to believe any of this was happening. It was like watching an action movie yet it was a horrible scene of reality. I no longer feel quite as safe in large, croweded places, but I do not fear to fly again because giving into the fear makes me feel that the terrorists have accomplished what they wanted. I think that it should be known that even though our buildings went down, our nation did not. Instead, we pulled together and sought justice, not vengence (as President Bush had mentioned something like that earlier). My family did fly an American flag after September 11th. In fact, we even put one hanging down on the inside of our house on one of the top windows, so when the lights go on at night, the flag shines through the window. I still feel the same about the American Flag but its symbolization of the meaning of freedom and the right to live in this country feel much stronger. My husband Jason, daughter Jordan and myself had stayed the night at my mother's condo in Jacksonville, Florida. Jason and I woke to Jordan wanting to watch a bit of t.v. as was her morning routine, however when we saw the screen we both reached for the remote. Jason thought I had left the television on the news the night before and I thought he had put on some war movie or something! We turned the volume up to find out what in the world we were watching. We saw the live feed of the damage done to the first tower. We both sat straight up in bed shocked by the images of what we were seeing. This had to be some kindof movie we thought. One of those Armageddon type deals, this couldn't really be going on in America! My husband is in the Navy so he reached for the phone to call his duty office as my mother came running into the room terror on her face. At this point we were then shown the second plane crashing and knew this was not some bizarre made for televison movie. This nightmare was real. In my head I prayed for the families of the people trapped in those buildings, and for the people themselves in hopes they may make it out alive. I prayed for the rescue workers I knew that must be on their way to help. I also took a moment out to selfishly pray for God to not send my husband out for his preplanned deployment a few days early. You see he was planned to ship out for a six month deployment on the nineteenth. I did not want to lose him, I could be strong for my mother who was already beside herself with grief. I could be strong and try to explain to my daughter what was going on. I could even be the shoulder to cry on for my best friend Wendy, who came to my mother's straight from work after hearing the news, sobbing uncontrollably. But I could not do it if my rock was gone. We sat in front of that little television all day glued, trying to gather whatever information the media could afford us. Forever etching the images of that day in our minds and hearts. You would think what with us living so far south of the event it would have had minimal effect on us but it is quite the opposite. As we are a military family we saw first hand how secuity was raised so that no person was allowed on base without current proper military ID. Dependants weren't even allowed on base unescorted. Our active duty spouses had to be with us at all times. Going to the Commisary (grocery store) had gone from taking a few minutes to get on base and head straight to the store, to now having to have your husband with you (ID in hand) possibly get stopped at one of the random searches, and then having to state where you were heade and why. I have to say where some people would have been upset with the delay and so called invasions of privacy, I never felt safer because of all the security measures. We have been made to live thru stricter security measures, yet have been given a stronger sense of pride in our military and a renewed feeling of safety. We were caught unaware, we thought we were untouchable and that such an atrocity could never happen on American soil. We were proven wrong. I heard them saying that a palne had gone into one of the buildings in New York. The first thing that came to my mind was that they are just fooling around, but then they said that another plane has hit the other tower. Then we heard that a palne hit Camp David and the Sears tower in Chicago. In school they let us out early, about 11:30. We went to my dad's store and he works in Downtown, La. We saw all these armored police mobiles and I thoght that we were going through an apocalypse. Through all this i was in shock and feared they might terrorize LA. I visited New York after thanksgiven in 1999 with my Sister Flor Mata She won a prize to visit for a week the city and I live in the USA so we decide to fly the same day, her from Guadalajara, Mexico and I from San Francisco we meet in the airport and for a entire week I live the dream of my life, we spend every hour of those days walking and admiring the beautifull city of manhatan we fall in Love with the statue of Liberty we took several pictures from the bridges we had a ticket for apple tours signed and we used all week to go from one side of the island to other we went on the Empire State and because our budget didn't allow it we couldn't go to the top of the Twin Towers and I promess to my Sister that in thanksgiven of 2001 we will go again to New York and we would go to the top of the towers and we would eat at the restaurant "Windows of the World" we make our reservations for thanksgiven so we buy our tickets and when I wake up the morning of 9/11 I was horrified seeing the tower with a lot of smoke I call her in the phone to Guadalajara, Mexico and we sow at the same time how our dream was being broken by people without heart we cry like crazy all day we last around 3 hours in the phone, I was scared she was asking me to start driving to mexico that in the T.V. in Mexico there where saying that was a bomb in San Francisco. And she was scared for me and my family, we pray for everybody that was suffering at that moment and we ask God to give us strength. I have back the money for my tickets and I send it to the people in New York and I see in this way, like if I was there hugging a child and telling him that everything was going to be allright. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was working on a truck,outside of my residence in Boston, Mass. At first I heard it on the radio and thought a small plane had hit the building by accident. When my girlfriend left for work she had said it was a large jet and I went upstairs to see what was going on. After witnessing the second jet hit the building I felt sick and could not work anymore. Stopped what I was doing and decided it was a time for full attention to the event, finding out that the jet, at least one had been out of Boston, made me sicker and frightened, as the jet probably flew right over me on its way there. I felt we were all attacked and just kept thinking about the bombing of Bagdad. The things that happen over money, power and persnal beliefs, a true tragedy. It has only made me angry, for my own father was a WW2 veteran and was at Normandy France for the invasion and as a result became a violent alcoholic, as I myself did at age 14 or 15. That we should be more careful and dont under estimate the force of just one person, one angry person as a serial killer. They are not born they are made. I was hired to work for the Dept. of Finance, CAU at 66 John Str.. I am an adult born with Disabilities. I have a Hearing Room I work with different Judges and Respondance I deal with Parking Tickets. I was suppose to have a good day I had a nice Judge and Respondance City Wide Parking. We start hearings at 9:00 City Wide was late it was after 9:00. I don't remember the time frame but i was waiting for city wide, i was talking to the Judge and we heard what sounded like a loud poping explosion that we jumped. We wasn't sure what it was i was still wondering about my respondance. I looked at my window and i saw some people standing in the middle of the street looking at something at awed, they were starring at the sky i then heard lots of police cars and ambulances passing by. I was wondering what was going on so did some of the other judges. I called up my father to see if knew enything he wasn't sure. I was asking around some of the judges had small radio with them the only information we got that a plane hit one of the towers and people was jumping out of the building. I went back in my room i looked at the window and i heard what sounded like a loud rumbling noise and i saw those people running for there lives then all of a sudden it got covered up with white and gray dust.The smell was awful. I called up my father to tell him what happened and that i was alright, the supervisor was then telling us to stay out of the rooms to sit in the waiting area. I was all over the place trying to stay calm and be with some of my co-workers my best friend was off in a way i was glad and in a way i wasn't. I went to the bathroom to get a wet towel to cover my face because the smell was awful. I saw city wide parking he said he saw what happened outside. I went back in my room to call my father of whats going on and i was alright then i heard the second buiding collapsing and the window covered up with gray and white dust then it got dark like night time. The smell got worse. I was then out of my room trying to keep calm and waiting to hear what was going on then finally we heard on the intercone that it was a terrorist attack on the wtc and the towers collapsed i got very upset and started to cry. Afer a couple of hours they told us that it was alright for us to leave it was 2:30 some of the co-workers started to leave i went back to my room to get a couple of things and to let my father know. I looked outside and i couldn't believe my eyes how it looked it was all covered up in white and gray dust and paper all over. I was little scared but i had to start headed for home. I was heading towards fulton i couldn't take the train the police told me it wasn't working i was wondering how i was going home. Dust covering everything, i asked one of the police man how i was going home i told him i live in the Bronx he told me to go to 14th street he then gave me a mask. I started to head to the Brooklyn Bridge the wind blew the smoke on me i got covered up. I asked another police man how i was going home he told me to walk to 14th street to fallow those people i wasn't sure if some of knew where there were going. I then remembered where the 6 train would go I walked to canal street, Spring street, China town, Soho, the village, Blecker, Astor place, then 14th street. I was trying to find a pay phone that works so i could call my father i was lucky that i had plenty of change and money. When i was at 14th i called my father to aske him how the hell i was going home?, he told me to take the 125th bus and get off on 125th. I got on the 125th bus it was crazing and kaotic people was trying how to get home. I saw military airplanes passing by and some people standing next the subway as if it was going to open any minute for them. I was able to get on a bus and there was lots of traffic it was also going very slow. A woman on the bus saw my shoes dirty with white dust she said i see we have the same kind of shoes because hers was also covered up. I was dirty and hot. I got to 125th i called my father of how he was going to pick me up he told me to across the street and wait next to the bridge. I was waiting my father and i saw lots of people trying to walk home to Queens and the Bronx, i wasn't going to try to do that because i would get lost and my arthritis wouldnt let me go to far. There was a man drunk yielling about ending the world the police didnt wanted to deal with him. I finally saw my father i wanted to give him a hug but i was hot and dirty. My father had to get help from the police car to take me home they had to first take some other people home we were still in the Manattan area and i saw the smoke coming out from the attack. We went to the police station for my father to get his car and then home i was glad to be at home so was my mother she gave me a hug. I had to stay home for a couple of days i was trying to recover from it my legs were sore from all that walking. We had to go back to work on Monday I was very nervous and some of the area was blocked off there was lots of military police. I was glad that i saw one of the Judges that morning. I got very sensative to the smell enything thats similiar to it i get very sensative. I get certain kinds of dream of the attack i wake up angry and have a heard time going back to sleep. I make sure i carry enough change and i have a cell phone. Some of the Judges didnt come back since the attack of dont come as often to CAU. On september 11, I was at school doing a spelling worksheet that our teacher had given us. we worked silentley on our paper for about fifteen minutes until the door that leeds from our classroom to the office opened and the principal stepped in. he said "um", like he does when he wants to get our attention. we all looked up as he began to speak. I will never forget what he said."we have just gotten word that something has happened to the world trade center and the pentagon is under attack". I didn't know what had happened. what stood out with me was that my principal, one of the people you were always taught to trust and believe had just said that the center of the military of the most powerful country in the world was under attack. I turned cold and looked to my teacher who seemed to be in shock. he reached into on of the drawrs of his desk and fumbled for the remote control for the t.v. set up in our room. he turned it on, and it was already on the news from ealier that week. I saw the horror of the smoking tower for the first time. from looking at the news ticker, I had learned that a plane had crashed into it. I thought that it could be an accident or something. by this time I had gathered that the pentagon was not troops rushing in planes bombing ships in the Patomac under attack. we watched all of the media coverage until the moment came when I knew that this was no accident. I saw that second plane hit the side of the other tower and the fire shoot out, I was horrified. most of that day we watched the coverage, and when I got home I emidiatley turned on the t.v. I took out a blank tape and started to record the news for "future reference". The one thing that sticks out in my mind is when later on in the day when I was home, I was watching CNN and dan rather was playing some new tape and the plane hit the building and he was at a loss for words. all he said was"oh". NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I am a Sergeant with the NYPD. On September 11, 2001 I was home when the first plane hit. I kissed my wife good-bye and jumped in my car (later she wasn't sure if I was dead or alive). I got to the WTC shortly after the second plane hit. When I got to Liberty & West Sts. I witnessed between 6-10 people jumping from around the 100th floor of the North Tower. I had my wedding reception at Windows on the World and went there for my anniversary each year. I tried to figure out how I would relate this to my wife ... if at all. I was about to go into the Marriott Hotel when a Deputy Commissioner grabbed me so that we could find PC Kerik together. We found Kerik on Barclay Street where I was asked to find Barry Mawn of the FBI. I was going south on Church Street, the east border of WTC near Fulton Street when the South Tower collapsed. I hid behind a NYPD-ESU truck (REP)with a few others. The debris peppeered the truck almost severing the hand of the person next to me. The most dangerous moment was the dust. I've been told that each floor of the tower had a million pounds of concrete. When that dropped on me ALL SIGHT AND SOUND WENT AWAY. I was holding my breath, peeking through my fingers. The lack of sight was rough, but the lack of sound was worse. Only a few seconds before was the loudest noise you've ever heard. Now, because it was so quiet, I thought I was the only person alive in NYC. I went to take a breath. I can only say it was like putting your face in a bag of flour, sealing it around your face and breathing. The dust filled my throat and lungs completely. Now I was sure everyone was dead and I was about to die also. I tried using my hankie to breathe with little positive results. I then pulled my suit jacket right over my head and wrapped it tight around my face. That helped greatly. I knew the truck I was behind faced south. I felt it and oriented myself north and started crawling. At Barclay and Church Sts. a kid named Jonathan Stewart, from a nearby High School, pulled me into St. Peter's Church. In the church were 4-5 others with more coming in. We cut strips of priest's robes and altar cloths so that people had face masks and bandages. I left just before Fr. Mychal Judge got there. I was on the street about 2 - 3 blocks away when the North Tower fell. I then went to a local Police Station, showered with my clothes on (to supress the dust) and returned to WTC. Eventually I found my way to the morgue where I helped catalogue victims until 3 AM. Wednesday the 12th found me on the bucket brigade around 6:00 AM. On the 12th Det. Pete Friscia and I recovered an Anmerican Flag from in front of 4WTC that flew on the Space Shuttle in December. I was at Ground Zero for 21 of the next 24 days. I've been to Washington DC (1x) Riverside, CA (1x) and London (3x) to speak about 9/11, I've met the President, George Bush and the Prime Minister of the UK, Tony Blair. In February my wife and I always went to Windows on the World for our anniversary. This year we went to Hawaii. I really just wanted to get far away from NY. I haven't felt an overwhelming change. On September 10th I was patriotic, God fearing and hard working. I'm all those things today, maybe more so. I'm not sad or depressed. I don't know if I'm supposed to be. I just know that any nation that doesn't stand with us should be considered our enemy. Regardless of how much oil they have. Our 400+ fireman and cops and EMTs didn't have a chance to plan. The call went out and they responded. I'd bet as the building came down some of those heroes were worried about going to heaven. After all, people have faults. So without the years of planning or the promise of heaven we sent over 400 against their 19. Some people worry what chance we have against such a dedicated enemy. It seems we all had one but didn't fly them. I've rescued a flag from Ground Zero, given one to Tony Blair and had one flown for me in an F-15 over Afghanistan (15 bombs --- ON TARGET). I was a senior in high school, after first period I started to walk to my seconded period class, I turned and looked at the television in the food court, there I saw the first plane on fire. With all the smoke I could not tell what was going on, or what it had hit. I then walked up the stairs to my next class when my boyfriend told me what the plane had hit. I was devistated, I than entered my Government class, that is when we all watched the seconded plane hit the other tower. The first tower collapsed and people were running, jumping out of windows, ems, and fire trucks were distroyed within seconds. Mass hysteria, I was dumb founded, This did not seem real.
