Yes, we were indeed assaulted by heinous terrorists. Yet our government has since finished where Bin Laden left off. The Department of Homeland Security vows to match the terrorists' dynamism; flexibility is key when fighting terrorism. The President -- a fitness enthusiast who occasionally chops down trees for exercise -- avers that to touch our toes we must first shoehorn bric-a-brac agencies into a single monolith. However, common sense dictates that a more fitting motto for the DHS behemoth is: ""if you haven't witnessed our white elephant do a split yet, then you have never truly seen a white elephant."" Lest we forget we are dealing with what Bush often calls ""terrorist killers"". Thus, does it behoove us to emulate these lawless gadflies? Heaven forbid that we extend our tour de force against our shadowy nemeses to clear-eyed allies. Yet Bush might do just that, as he has already, wantonly, forsaken civil liberties. Have we let the War on Terror spill into a war against law, plunging us down the slippery slope of sloppy reasoning? The Constitution, some say, is the ultimate firewall against abuse. But so is our political culture. We must bolster, rather than bury, the rule of law. Judicial review has been hijacked. We cannot follow the courts' deference to the president. The democratic process is now the gatekeeper of last resort. Congressional midterms are fast approaching. It is not too late to strip Bush's incidental mandate. His case for war against Hussein has been built on speculation and fear. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Toward A More Perfect Union: Lessons Learned - Or Not - Since 9/11 How will September 11, 2001 be remembered in the years to come? As the beginning of the end? As one more day that woke us up for a while until we drifted back to sleep? Or could it go down in history as a terrible wound inflicted that awakened us to the need for healing? Maybe we could be like the man who has a heart attack (bad news, right?), but his trip to the emergency room results in the discovery of a cancer that is then successfully treated. Albert Einstein referred to nationalism as a disease. I believe that, as is so often the case, the challenge is to put things into a reasonable and realistic perspective. Anyone who genuinely wants to contribute to healing must resist the temptation to approach global politics like it's a team sport or an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. We must not let our identity as Americans keep us from seeing our place in the bigger picture as members of the human race and guardians of planet earth. September 11 has helped me to realize that our hearts and our minds are intended to work together, in partnership, neither one imposing itself on the other. The emotions that have been stirred in us during this past year are important; they are vital. The analysis that has been generated is just as important. Our challenge, as Americans and as citizens of the world, is to put the two together, to allow our hearts to fuel us and our minds to direct us--- and specifically direct us to break free of old familiar, circular patterns of behavior that ultimately solve nothing. If you are only of one mind, one unanimous opinion about all that is going on in our world, I will be so bold as to suggest that you are hiding behind simplicity and all-or-none thinking. We must not run and hide behind over- simplifications and scenarios full of good guys and bad guys. I hope we can listen better to our hearts and minds; they are hard at work. I hope we can remind ourselves --- and each other --- that the community in most danger here is not America, but humanity. The solutions we so desperately need will not be found in a contest to see who the toughest guy on the block is, but in a partnership that begins within each of us and expands to become a global sense of community. September 11 should inspire all of us to get involved with trying to make a difference in this world, to become pro-active. Don't just think about volunteering; volunteer. Don't just complain about government; participate, change it. Don't just disagree with this article; write a letter to the editor. Einstein once said, ""We cannot simultaneously prepare for war and for peace."" September 11 has taught me that violence is never an answer, in self-defense is it only acceptable. I hope September 11 will remind us all how fragile life is and that we are all connected as humans. So as we reach this very important anniversary in our country's history, let us make the solid decision to open our hearts and minds to dealing with the problems we now face in new and creative ways. I say nothing is different, especially our inability to acknowledge or learn from our mistakes. We proclaim our support for Ariel Sharon as a ""man of peace."" We have a record a mile long of backing armed intervention in the self-government of countries from Viet Nam to Guatemala. In 2001 we began quite unjustifiably bombing and paying mercenaries to fight in Afghanistan to take ""an eye for an eye"" for the WTC terrorist attack. Economically, we're fully as bossy, selfish, and hypocritical on a global scale. And we wonder: ""Why do they hate us so much?"" We leap to the comforting conclusion: They hate us because we're free. In fact, our sense of freedom is illusory, based on the fallacy that we have no past. That was the advantage of coming to a New World from the old. That was the lure of the Frontier: There a man's past didn't matter--only what he was, what he could do. Now, new technology and population growth have so shrunken the globe that that beckoning Frontier has vanished. No way remains to pretend that the past didn't happen--no where to escape from the consequences of our own acts. We still must take to heart the bitter lesson that cost Europe so dear--that ""Those who will not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."" They really hate us because we THINK we're free of the laws of karma that bind everyone else to suffer the consequences of their acts. Impacted first was President Bush and the insular mainstream media - cloyingly U.S-centric and farcically unsophisticated on world affairs. George W, who only a few months before drew a blank when asked to name Pakistan's President, overnight - along with fellow ignoramus - got a crash course on the geography, history and politics of a region swarming with Al- Qaeda terrorists. Unpronounceable names like ""Tora Bora"", ""Quetta"", ""Jalalabad"" and ""Peshawar"" exuded a new gravitas. Not to mention Pakistan's General Musharraf, who suddenly became Bush's new best friend and bagged a promised $1 billion in aid as a quid pro quo for providing intelligence and air bases to dethrone the Taliban and get Osama. Today, armed Americans, thousands from the army, CIA and the FBI stalk Pakistani landscape against the wishes of its people who consider America the scofflaw. When the U.S fought a proxy war with former Soviet Union in Afghanistan, Pakistan became its front-line state, promptly to be dropped once Communism collapsed. Many fear a repeat. More ominous is a nuclear strike as India and Pakistan squabble over Kashmir. Both are nuclear capable. America can play the honest broker but says it won't unless invited by India. Scariest still is Pakistan suffering yet another attack on 9/11 by Islamic militants threatening to strike. Instead of finger-wagging and preachy homilies for Musharraf to ""behave"" with India, ""contain terrorism"" and allow democracy to flower by holding elections next month, a schizoid Bush and his oxymoron aides should allow Pakistan a breather to deal with militant Islam its way. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Toward a More Perfect Union: Failure to Ask the Right Question and to Answer It The well coordinated terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 occurred because a group of men hated the United States enough to give their lives to hurt us. Following the attacks, the U.S. Government rightly asked the question, ""How was this allowed to happen?"", and began planning to more effectively combat terrorism. Another question ought also to have been asked, and addressed, namely, ""Was the hatred of the United States to any extent justified, and, if so, how can we proceed to moderate or even eliminate hatred of our country?"". Osama bin Laden, credited with masterminding the terrorist attacks, has been quoted as saying, ""I swear to God that America will not live in peace before peace reigns in Palestine, and before all the army of the infidels depart the land of Muhammad"" (i.e., Saudi Arabia). If we had troubled ourselves to be introspective, rather than simply outraged and vengeful, we might have realized that the goals of these terrorists are not substantially different from our own goals. We (the American people and the U.S. Government) want peace in the Middle East, and more than that we want a just peace. We (the American people) want out of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Government is autocratic, and supports an international islamic organization that is working to foment revolution around the world, including inside the United States. It's not too late to be introspective, to become concerned with how to reduce hatred, rather than only with how to combat it. The Bush administration, however, appears to disregard the importance of hatred entirely, for example, the hatred growth effect of making a pre-emptive strike into an Arab country seems not to be a factor in the administration's invasion cost:benefit equation. Hatred cannot always be avoided, and we should not compromise our principles in order to avoid it. In this case, however, we are hated because we are already compromising our principles. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story If 9/11 was a wake-up call, why are we as a nation still asleep and dreaming that the fear industry (Homeland Security, Airport Security, Militarized Security, invading poor countries in the name of our Security) will protect us? Why does much of the world fear and hate and threaten us? Why is the administration and media so focused on resisting terrorism without asking what terrorism really means? We citizens, awake or not, are politically and financially supporting military aggression upon the already occupied people of Palestine. We invaded Afghanistan and threaten to invade other sovereign states because they may harbor terrorists. This arrogant aggression, to many in the rest of the world, is the epitome of terrorism! It is MILITARIZED TERRORISM: terrorizing the world with vague and specific threats and acts of using U.S. military might against relatively defenseless peoples. Where is the logic in thinking it is OK for tanks and helicopters to kill civilians but not for suicide bombers? Suicide bombs are a tactic of war, of an oppressed people making a statement about their desperation. The Golden Rule works this way: Do unto others (terrorize), as you would have them do unto you (terrorize). So, after a wedding party was slaughtered, as collateral damage, our troops were attacked. To build a more perfect union, we must wake up from this illusion (that we are not terrorists) before we escalate as an aggressor state, endangering our own real safety and that of everyone else in the world. We citizens must reclaim the democratic process of thinking and discussing the effects of our militarized terrorism and militarized economy. Were they ever important enough to want to come back and mend them? The problem about social security to me is an important issue for the fact that I work now. I m paying taxes so my check is being deducted. I want to know that I am going to be able to retire with money that I worked for throughout the years. Moving on, the Tax Bill with the tax cuts has being discussed and passed on. However the people are now having second thoughts of their own decision for the fact that at that time it was brought up the economy was fine . Thus, now they are doubting because since Sept. 11 our economy has gone down. Airlines have declared bankruptcy many americans have being laid off. The decision is how will this tax bill help us? This nation is no where near invincible, and now we live in fear of a future attack. The people responsible for these actions not only killed thousands of Americans and caused billion of dollars in damage, they instilled fearing every American heart. When these events come to mind Americans ask themselves what were the motives of the villains? Why did they do what they did? Did they do this for revolutionary purposes? Was this some sort of crusade? I personally feel that this attack was for religious purposes. I feel these said individuals committed these crimes to prove that there religion or faith is above every other. I as an American believe that they are entitled to practice their religion or faith freely, but I ask myself what kind of a religion would promote murder? What kind of a religion would allow people to kill innocent people? What caused these events is not as important as what will be done to compensate for them. When will justice be served and who will it be served to. The response, of the U.S., for these crimes was timely and just. I realize that more people have to die but it is necessary for the sake of keeping our country safe. As our eyes opened on 9/11 after the attack we realized a number of things. Our pryers still go out to those affected by the tragedy. Now we as a nation can only learn and grow. We have to remind ourselves that when all is said and done, we are still one nation under God. Within each of the world's great religions, I thought, there were kernels which, if isolated, advocate non-violence. The commandment ""The Shall Not Kill"" is reinforced by the prophet Isiah, ""The lion shall lie down with the lamb."" The Lord's Prayer is an instruction in forgiveness, the Hindu Upanishads, a mandate for human compassion. The holy texts of Buddhism are prescriptions for an end to the cycle of violent retribution, while the ultimate goal of Islam, itself, is peace. Certainly, it was this agenda that was not only interrupted, but perhaps canceled. But can we afford to allow this agenda to be suspended? And have we learned the most serious lesson of 9/11 of the necessity of creating a more perfect union, not just in America, but in the world? St. Paul has taught us that there can be no peace without justice. The justice he spoke of was really Aristotelian, in which there is a more equitable distribution of the benefits and burdens of society. As Aristotle understood, unless the well-off create a more just world, they will live in constant danger of violent revolution, risking the loss of everything they have. Consequently it is imperative that we seek to create this more just world as a matter of enlightened self-interest. In the end, without a component of compassion, we will find it ever more difficult to win the war on terrorism. How about condoning genocide in Cambodia because they are friendlies, they oppose Vietnam? How about staying silent when Indonesia invades East Timor because our mineral and petroleum corporations want to stay on good terms with the Indonesian government? "The W" and American CEO Dick Cheney have remained bullet proof despite enormous amounts of evidence that testify to their shadiness and unfitness to serve people they know nothing about nor care to. "There will be no more easy money, just hard time," says George. That s just funny. When politicians get to this level of hypocrisy it enters the realm of "super irony." It s still easier for a corporation to claim bankruptcy and get shelter from debt than the average citizen. US foreign policy is still putting us all at risk. September 11th has done nothing to reform the corrupt power structure from what I can see. And our government seems to be doing everything it can to make this country as widely and fiercely hated as possible. The debate over global politics, the environment, and the bombing of other countries is not just about others' misery, owl species, or the world of our great-grandchildren anymore. It's about the safety of this country today or next week, and about whether magnanimity or machismo is the best course to ensure that safety. For certain war- and cold-war-promoters every country we've attacked for decades has been attacked to protect this country, but I never believed that justification or felt that threat. Now I feel the threat, but believe that the justification for attacking other countries is more misguided than ever. In the case of Iraq, the desired slight may have to be manufactured, in the form of an allegation of aid to Bin Laden. If that doesn't work, the offense may be the possession of weapons that the United States also possesses. If that doesn't stick, we'll just bomb Iraqis for their own good, out of humanitarian concern. Our own safety finally really is at stake, but acting out the same fear-driven panic and chest-pounding as usual will make us part of the problem.. Bombing Iraq and putting weapons in space won't stop box-cutters. Bombs won't scare off suicide killers. Now that we're all scared, let's talk a little about what course of action might actually make us safer. Writers Barbara Kingsolver and Susan Sontag enraged the Right by suggesting American culture was to blame, while Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson enraged the Left by suggesting homosexuals should take the fall. Thankfully, neither sentiment resonated with the general public A year has passed, and we have not yet begun to heal. Let us hope among the several stages of our grief, Americans find the maturity and the wisdom to reflect upon this great tragedy, learn from its profound lessons, and chart our future course with little recrimination or blame. Like children afraid to sleep when there is lightning and thunder outside our windows, we have wished for the government to stay with us. There's only one problem: we aren't children, and the lightning and thunder of the past year have come not from terrorists, but from our own government. We've been subjected to repeated assaults upon our Constitutional rights, plans to pit neighbor against neighbor as spies, plans of war to which none of our forebearers would have consented, all of which have been promulgated by an administration attaining office without mandate for such. In our distraction, we have let decades of enviromental law and international treaty work be flushed away by corporate interests with ties to our current administration. We have yet to understand that our votes in the 2000 election prompted what has happened to us since September 11th and before. We have yet to understand that our future votes are all that can undo this damage, domestically and internationally. Why have we come to this? Perhaps because our only news sources seek to focus us on the administration's message--war is necessary, war is inevitable, war is... whatever the administration wants it to be. To be truly free, to be truly self-governed, we must instruct our representatives in Congress in what we wish for our future. We cannot leave that task to those compromised by the wealth of corporations. If we do, those representatives will act in the interest of corporations, rather than in the interests of the majority of individual citizens. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Toward a More Perfect Union: Lessons Learned- Or Not- Since 9/11 After the terrible tragedy on September 11 the world has changed drastically. we went from fighting against one another over political issues to being united against the criminals who committed this heinous crime. People opened their eyes and realized that instead of us fighting amongst each other that we are all together in this country and to stand up together as one. This tragedy caused many people to think negative about our countrys government because of their decisions concerning the incident. The public at first felt that the government reacted way to slowly and allowed the criminals to escape. The government took heavy criticism and now they react without much debate. They are quick to make drastic decisions because they dont want any public backlash. Regardless of what kind of approach the government takes the public will find something to complain about. The government now also worries about our standing as a world power. We were and still are the number one power in the world but we are also seen as being weaker than we were before. Other countries now realize that we are not as invincible as we think we are. Even if they wanted to hurt us, its even more difficult for foreigners to enter our country. The foreign policy of our country since September 11 has become much more strict and many people are not allowed to enter or country. Since the eye opener on September 11 I think we have realized that there is much more important issues than political issues and tax cuts. We have to learn to appreciate the people around us because at any given time those people can be taken away from us. Would you agree? Personally, I think that it was an ""eye opener"", but I feel that is was so sad that it took the higacking of four commercial airlines to unite us, Americans, together. Many Americans felt insecure; for, here we are thinking that America was one of the sadest and invincible countries, and it waws attacked by terrorists. September 11, 2001 convinced many Americans to believe that possibly America wasn't one the safest countries after all. When I learned that it was Bin Laden that arranged the masterful plan of hijacking commercial airlines on Spetember 11, 2001 and striking the heart(s) of America (not only the World Trade Centers, but also the Pentagon), I was surprised that this evil driven man was from Afghanistan. I thought that our foreign policies were stern enough to prevent something like that attack from happening. I think because of September 11, 2001 our foreign policies need to involve stradegies to prevent other countries from invading our trust and freedom. Many people are very pessimistic, in general, and can't salvage anything good from anything what so ever, much less a tradegy like the event of September 11, 2001. Above all, I feel people should see the good in all this; we should salvage our freedom in this country, and see that this has not ""changed our lives forever"" because then we have been won by the people set out to control or hurt us. This should bee considered as ""evil-doers"" just putting Amercia's freedom and unity to the test. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Many of the issues that seemed never ending in the news disappeared after Sept. 11. A few have returned while others are left in the dust. The biggest one or one of the most talked about was Bush's new presidency; whether or not he would be a reincarnation of his father and if he would be a good president. This question has returned as suspected. The nation is continuing to contemplate his actions as president thus far. September 11 lifted off his reputation as the ""people's president"". This was caused by his standing upon the wreckage together with the firefighters and speaking to the group of people who there about how he will retaliate against the Al-Queda. They felt at ease because he seemed to be in their level. Although this has occurred people of this nation still remain unsure toward his actions afterward. An enormous amount of people were anxious, thoroughly vexed, and wanted revenge as soon as possible. Personally, I was apprehensive Bush would consider a strike attack right after, then all out war. Especially now when the government is thinking about Iraq. Some residents of this nation want revenge while others would actually like to consider some thought into their final decision. For instance, an example where an equal amount of pressure and thought was put into was the Cuban Missile Crisis. President Kennedy and his advisors had to compete against the army's top men when they wanted to produce an immediate attack on Russia when they were posted in Cuba. Just like then we too are wondering whether Bush's decisions have been made correctly. Our commander-and-chief should be able to handle this situation. Question... Do you think he can or will?
