TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story September 11, a day that opened Americans heart. T his day was a wake up call for everyone. It made Americans realize how evil people are out there. Just to imagine how many people died in that disaster, makes people understand how valuable life is. New York, the city of the Twin Towers; The city of a new history. I am from John Hands Class and Ill be writing about this topic. Children's crying, running , and screaming, while others were making published out of a disaster. Reporters began to realize this when they saw what the reality was and how bad this was. The September 11, made America a better union by bringing everybody together, but also insecure. If we had prevented something like this everything would be the same or better than before. Interrogations were done everywhere I could say that even in my school were real scare that they didnt let us take back packs. I was frustrated that I didnt know what to do. Just by passing through the gas station and seeing the prizes oversimplification made my heart feel sad, for the only reason that I though it was going to be the end of the Word. At this point, I started to think about how many things I didnt get to do and also the things I took for granted. In conclusion, Ill like to say that people don t do anything until something happens. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Toward A More Perfect Union: Lessons Learned - Or Not - Since 9/11 Good things can come from terrible acts, but 9/11 has made the union less perfect. For a time there was a heartening compassion for 9/11 victims. It didn't generalize. Mass interest in specific aspects of foreign affairs improved a little, but that interest centers largely on making war against countries that may not merit invasion. There is little interest in obtaining an international consensus on making war before doing it. Tolerance of diversity has diminished. American chauvinism has become louder and more offensive. Arab men have been detained for long periods without due process, beaten up by bigots, thrown off planes, and stigmatized in many other ways. Government agencies and public media have encouraged the population to report ""suspicious""--read Arab-looking--people and their actions. Mass media have compliantly toed the government line, providing a narrow spectrum of opinion centering around the rightwing government's views. The Bush administration has used 9/11 as a pretext to enact measures that increase the flow of money from the population and the public purse to very wealthy individuals and corporations. More ominously, the Bush administration has declared an unending "war on terrorism" which, without apparent awareness that they are following George Orwell's ""1984"" almost to the letter, they treat as a licence to militarize the country, propose internment camps, and dismantle both civil rights protections and many government programs basic to any decent social contract. The two big political parties are owned subsidiaries of large corporations and other wealthy contributors who are getting the government they purchased--not democratic, not fair, not wise, not just. The union has become frightening to live in, and nothing on its political horizon promises to improve it. Team Bushs attitude towards governance was not so clear when the Twin Towers toppled and the presidentðs popularity soared. Only dimly do we remember that just before September 11, media outlets announced that results of consortium commissioned Bush v. Gore 2000 election recount were imminent. Tragedy struck, and predictably they were not. Not until mid-November did consortium participants release their version(s) of the results. Dutifully, media organizations reported Bush really is president, while burying the true story: had the recount proceeded without US Supreme Court intervention, Gore won. Civil unrest hasnt materialized despite the fact that Bush Administration actions in the aftermath of September 11 bear remarkable resemblance to a coup. Tactics involving repression, intimidation, disregard for the Constitution and its separation of powers now threaten our cherished democracy. The rule of law is thrown in the trash bin as treaty after treaty has been abrogated, or more ridiculously unsigned and the UN undermined. A right wing agenda is effected using War On Terror as the justification. Dissent evokes a harsh and coercive reaction from the White House that stifles inquiry. We must question the legitimacy of this presidency as we hurtle towards the brink of certain military conflict which may well morph into World War III. Before the world goes up in flames, thoughtful Americans must stand up to the powers that be and call their bluff, or risk losing democracy forever. These times are exceptionally dark and dangerous, not only because the administration is too cozy with corporate culture; but because the corporate media are it, and as such play along. In Zbigniew Brzezinski's 1997 book titled ""The World Chess Board"", he makes an impassioned argument for the US to embark upon a course of economic and military ""Hegemony"" to save the world from itself. Brzezinski suggests this will require control of Eurasia (Europe and Asia) by the US, and it can be accomplished only by controlling the world's last great oil reserves in the Caspian Basin. Among the countries that border this gigantic oil pool are Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, et al. One of these pawns has now fallen. The political battle is still between the working and moneyed classes, even if post-Reagan generations know little of it. Corporate airwaves banned Labor Day union stories along with the story of the creation of the EPA in response to a nations outrage at corporate polluters. Now people with such concerns are trivialized and vilified. Republicans accuse them of class warfare, as if the party of the moneyed class had not been waging its own. Like chameleons, market fundamentalists have become military fundamentalists. The market as panacea has changed to the war on terror as our reason for being. This fundamentalism subordinates all to a cause prosecuted behind closed doors, vulnerable to enormous corruption. Militarists know that the first rule of war is to control communications. Theres the rub: we have lost the right to set the public agenda. Exhibit A: the missing ozone layer. This story has been absolutely wiped clean from the national memory bank. Yet, according to scientists at NASA, ozone thinning will reach its peak by 2006. But that scenario works only if global warming is controlled because the two problems, ozone depletion and global warming, might interact. But hey, theyre only rocket scientists, so Im sure if corporate-controlled Blowhard Radio says theyre wrong, half of America will agree. Voila, nothing gets done. Television would rather warmonger nonstop than admit how close corporations have come to destroying us all. Nor will they tell the tale of how Doolittle and Delay, anti-regulation Republicans, delayed addressing the ozone problem. Likewise, Bush remains unchallenged as he stonewalls global warming. Are they patriotic or self-serving? Corporate Americas accountability dodge might ultimately be our greatest threat. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story TOWARD A MORE PERFECT UNION I worry. I worry that I'm just starting my life, and I have no idea where the world is headed. I worry that I could end up in the middle of a war. I worry that I could be just one casualty among thousands in some random terrorist event. I have no control over whether or not my country gets into a war. I have no control over anything. That was true before 9/11, but I wasn't fully aware of it. Now I am. I'm young enough that 9/11 will change my whole life, and I'm old enough to know it. I wish I didn't feel relief when I see a soldier from the National Guard in Penn Station. I wish Paul could be rambunctious and carefree, like he was before his father died. I wish I could believe again that America is untouchable. Nothing good has come out of 9/11; it's not possible to salvage something good out of such a nightmare. The two things that some suggest as good outcomes were the charitable giving and the rise in patriotic fervor. The reality is that 9/11 didn't instruct people to be generous; generosity was already in the hearts of those people. As for the second notion, patriotism boiled over into nationalism, and the result was a desire for violence. During the weeks following 9/11, even New York cab drivers were at risk of attack from hot-headed nationalists. I don't feel that I know enough to say whether or not the Bush administration has a firm grasp on the situation and understands what to do next. All I can do is hope. This is why I worry. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Before 9/11 I was preparing to go to the demonstrations against the IMF/World Bank in Washington. Due to the militarization of police forces in the US and increasingly violent tactics used by the police for crowd control, I was freaked out. The meetings were cancelled, but I still attended a peace demonstration that drew about 6,000 people. Allthough Al Queda doesn't deserve to get off free, the US should be responsiblely inside the bounds of international law for justice to be made. When the first reports came back fron Jenin I felt empty inside. With a feeling of helplessness, I went back to D.C. to express disapproval again. People have their opinions on the conflict, but my tiff is with the fact that Israel has hifacked the ""War on Terror"" and is using U.S. tax dollars to extend state sponsored terrorism on the Palestinians. At this demonstration, 100,000 people, almost half of Arab descent, marched on Washington. The emotion of the Palestinian-Americans were so high and their courage was amazing to show their disapproval during the civil liberties destruction of post-9/11. At this time, I'm upset. The Bush administration's inability to pass the Kyoto Protocol and Bush's unsigning of the International Criminal Coart is unacceptable. Our elected leaders decided not to sign the international children's rights treaty, this is not acceptable. The U.S. delegates that walked out on the UN Conference on Racism just before 9/11 are not acceptable. The US tuned out any oppertunity to use the UN for justice of the 9/11 masterminds. This shows how much the US cares about international law. So while so many are proud to be American, I am ashamed. Whenever I spend money I cring at what my tax money is supporting. Is it fueling state sponsored terrorism in Columbia and Palestine? On the anniversory of 9/11, I will mourn. After that, once again I will prepare for another trip to DC to express diapproval of the IMF/WB, because it is patriotic to stand up for what you believe in. Terrorism can not interupt our agendas for democracy and with leaders like George W. Bush we are heading in the wrong direction. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story "LESSONS LEARNED: THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FEDERAL COURTS","LESSONS LEARNED: THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FEDERAL COURTS A lesson we should be learning from the aftermath of September 11 is the importance of all federal courts, not just the Supreme Court, to the future of civil liberties. Ironically, President Bush has argued that the Senate should speedily confirm his right-wing judicial nominees lest empty seats on the federal trial and appellate courts compromise the war on terror. If anything, the novelty of the legal issues presented concerning the scope of government surveillance, military incarceration and trial, and secret detentions only intensifies the importance of scrutinizing lower court judges with painstaking care and due deliberation. The argument for speeding up lower court nominees is that, unlike the Supreme Court, lower courts only follow the law. They do not make it. That's hogwash. Lower court judges frequently face questions that cannot be decided on precedent alone. Trial judges are often required to exercise their ""sound discretion,"" which means that the Courts of Appeals typically defer to their factual findings and the Supreme Court does not interfere. Current challenges to the Adminstration's draconian policies prove the point. This is the most dangerous time since Vietnam to risk staffing the courts with judges more committed to ideology than civil liberties. Republicans helped create the extra vacancies they now hope to fill. Although President Clinton typically sent centrist judicial nominations to the Repubican Senate, Senate Republicans did not reciprocate the spirit of moderation. Instead, as documented in an American Judicature Society study, they subjected Clinton nominees to ""unprecedented delay in confirmation processes."" They hoped, in other words, to preserve an artificially high number of judicial vacancies that could later be filled with conservative Republicans. September 11 makes it especially important to rebuff such right-wing bullying. All courts help preserve our freedoms and must be staffed with utmost care. Many people try to concentrate on what else might happen in the future or what the president will say or do next. The issues that were on the news daily before sept. 11, are coming back very slowly. Most of those issues have to do with the president ignoring them. Yesterdays problems are yesterdays problems and today's problems are tomorrows worries. According to many people, Sept. 11 was a wake up call. They said that America is a free country and we have been taking our privileges for granted for such a long time. Also that many americans wait for such a tragic begining to be able to appreciate their country. Other people understand the meaning of Land of the Free, which means that hundreds of young men and older men risked their life's for their family and friends, so that they wouldnt be prisoners like in some third world countries. Many other people have clubs, organizations, and funds to help others understand the value their country has. When foreigners come to live in America, they know that they dont have to follow a day to day routine exactly as their leader. Many of those foreigners go through a lot just to be free. To me many Americans are to judge mental on how their free country is being run. They should always think twice before they talk bad about America because this is the country they have lived and given us so man rights. I personally didnt think it was a wake up, because my life really didnt change of how I saw America. I somehow in a way was angry of how many people out of a sudden started going to church and started praying. The climate of fear public officials have nurtured since 9/11 (when the weapons were knives, if you'll recall) has found its way to public health research and practice. Many health researchers are setting aside other lines of research to get a piece of the anti-terrorism funding. The American Public Health Association issued a statement following 9/11 (www.apha.org/united/action.htm) that reads like it could have come from the Pentagon (""funding for public health must be bolstered . . . .""). It is hard to blame researchers and officials, given chronic underfunding of public health and unending frustration about the health insurance crisis. It is exciting to be part of a war that promises victory, rather than a perpetual holding action against countless challenges. But before 9/11, it looked like underserved health concerns were finally recovering (""it's the insurance crisis, stupid!"") from the political debacle of the Clinton health plan. The preventable health threats from a few malevolent individuals certainly focus the mind. But do they deserve so much more attention than everyday hazards (deaths from auto accidents surpassed the 9/11 toll by 9/30), mental health (suicide passed 9/11 in mid-October), and natural infections (HIV did not catch up with the 9/11 toll until December, but simple influenza did so in September.) This is to say nothing of cardiovascular disease, which killed about as many Americans on 9/11 as the attacks. Years of peace and prosperity created a growing consensus that we should work harder to improve the health of all Americans. Even though West Nile Virus has returned natural health concerns to the headlines, we cannot help but wonder if our leaders are using hypothetical diabolical threats to our health to hide from the challenges of the things that really are killing us. His brazen act of sealing of the presidential libraries is not only an insult to the citizens who paid for them, it is theft and mockery of truth and history. The Freedom Of Information Act is now nearly extinct. Homeland Security will surely generate even greater insecurity if it is enacted with the same lack of disclosure and open, informed debate that the USA Patriot Act received. The electorate is discovering what is being swept into law. Workers will have been denied their bargaining rights and have their livelihood subjected to the whims and dictates of the President. How many other Americans are horrified by the Bush Administrations stolen authority to label a U.S. citizen an enemy combatant and then proceed to indefinately incarcerate him and completely strip him of his constitutional rights? Operation TIPS would breed a culture of distrust and paranoia, and embolden informents and snitches of questionable reliability and intentions. Personal vendettas and unjust harassment by authorities must not replace the rule of law. We are well on our way towards witnessing our military become a political police force. How can all this not evoke an uneasy comparison to the state of emergency mentality of mid 1930s Germany? These and other measures being rushed to implementation must be held up to careful scrutiny for inherent negative consequences. If the neglect or dismantling of the Bill Of Rights is the price we pay in order to purchase, at best, only limited protection from terror, then we have lost the War On Terrorism. Instead, the status quo is still being maintained, and in some cases even amplified. On 9-11 and afterwards, we were all bombarded with corporate-influenced media. Less noticeable was the increase in the amount of corporate influence on the Bush administrations actions, ranging from a rise in military spending ($346,500,000,000 in 2002) to large concessions regarding the environment (weakening of air conditioner efficiency standards, permission for mining companies to dump waste throughout the U.S., endorsement of the proposal to store 77,000 tons of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, and the list goes on). And even less noticeable to the public was the Orwellian-like encroachment on civil liberties (Homeland Security Act and the U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act). And for those whose eyes were opened, perhaps the greatest shock was the realization that the United States has never been the most beloved country in the world. Noam Chomsky stated it most eloquently when hesaid, "the U.S. is the only country that was condemned for international terrorism by the World Court and that rejected a Security Council resolution calling on states to observe international law." Years of hypocrisy, unilateralism, and covert agendas regarding foreign policy culminated in 9-11. But can we salvage anything good from 9-11? The answer is: yes. We must recognize the fact that our country needs to improve its position with the rest of the world; we must demonstrate respect for the victims by acknowledging the real causes behind the attacks; and lastly, we must act with compassion, not senseless retaliation. 9-11 was not a wake up call for most. Instead, this tragedy was a nudge- in which direction, good or bad, only time and the manner in which we act will tell. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story We as Americans consider ourselves a moral and just people. Beyond our shores we are perceived as neither. We preach liberty and justice for all. We claim to export democracy and civil rights. Ideologically we export greed and exploitation. Neither is just or moral. Post 9/11, the best long term solution to prevent future attacks is acknowledge that the reason they hate us is because they see what we don t about America. Our stated foreign policies are hypocritical. Human and civil rights are meaningless if economic rights are ignored. If we exercise a truly moral foreign policy where businesses export jobs where respect for workers, their needs, their futures and their nations are considered we have taken one step toward changing the minds of those that hate us. While we export jobs we should export all weve learned and exercise here at home about respect, empowerment and workers rights we will have set an example we can be proud of. If we do not exploit and subjugate foreign workers of American corporations, their subsidiaries and subcontractors and export good jobs with opportunity and respect we will be less ideologically isolated. We will have less to fear and we will have set a true moral example of the highest order. If we learn anything from the horror of 9/11 it should be that we have the opportunity to reverse the hate. The only way to do that is to set the example we preach and export respect for the rights of all workers, not fear and greed. America is eagerly on its way to rebuilding its power and self-assurance that weve always felt it had. It s an enormous struggle, but do we really know in which way were heading? Our country's foreign policy is not where we expected it to be. We cant even find the cooperation we would expect to get from the people who we call our friends and allies. It s as if every corner we turn there appears two more. We can only hope to find those we are looking for and get rid of those we dont want. Is the American Democracy prepared to triumph over these dictators, anarchists, and terrorist groups which only wish to see our downfall? Democracy in the United States has changed over the centuries, and continues to change for the benefit of the people and its survival. Before September eleventh, most Americans never really saw what democracy was all about. Now we see both its muscle and Achilles' heel in this time of crisis. Foremost, democracy guarantees us our liberties and civil right written in the constitution, but it limits us on doing things promptly and accurately when they are needed. America certainly has united and continues to stand tall. President Bush has enacted a Homeland Security Act, which has our country under tight security in preparation to stop any further terrorism. Americans have different feelings on this leap forward, and wonder if this is the right way to go. A downside to it has been that some of our rights have been stripped away in cases such as, racial profiling at airports and border checks, holding prisoners without bail, and habeas corpus. Many, no doubt, have had those encounters with the U.S.A. Since the days of the revolutionary war, the United States has continued to prove its leadership in the world. Has September 11th changed such a view? We have encountered a new era, one which was started by the beginning of the third millennium. Surely this new era belongs to us too, right? The terrorists think that it is their turn. Americans withheld minds exploded with reality those early morning hours of 9/11. Fear soon reached us, from the poor that live in the most remote regions in the United States, to our nations leaders in the White House. These leaders, led by President Bush, have noted, even towards the public, that we will not falter. Such ideas let the terrorists know that we are ready to take this new era too. America witnessed lives being cut short, families being separated, and our buildings being destroyed. Our minds drastically changed overnight. As a result we have become more demanding and eager to engage in wars without thinking twice. SInce we became stronger and more assertive with our military, will our kids be drafted to fight for our country? WIll such a disaster be re-lived in the future? Government officials are being trained for many circumstances. The scrutiny is mainly imposed on most middle eastern people. They are usually sent into secondary across our borders for further questioning. Although the date will always be remembered with great sorrow, we should not dwell in our downfall, but pick up the broken pieces and become stronger. My message is we cant change the past, so we should concentrate on the future. How could we make an impact to help secure a safer environment for this world we live in? ""Everything's different now,"" was the adage of the moment. But is everything really different? Pearl Harbor was an event that shattered our isolationist illusions and made us realize that what goes on outside of our borders matters, and can affect us. How has 9/11 altered our view of the world? It hasn't.
