I think a discussion of MAPC's outreach/inclusivity is overdue, but I would like to suggest that we leave the logo out of it for right now, to vastly reduce potential divisiveness of the issue. Table the logo for a week, talk about these important issues of inclusiveness, and then revive the logo discussion without it being a litmus test of any kind. I'm sure we've all seen it happen before. People who fundamentally mean well and generally agree with each other can get sidetracked into bitter wars over what meanings should be attributed to a symbol or symbolic action. Arguments over differing interpretations degenerate into labeling each others' interpretations in very negative ways. Right now, rather than fighting over the history vs. the perception of the peace sign, we should be focused on taking concrete steps to ensure (1) that everyone who opposes the war feels comfortable working with MAPC and (2) that MAPC's efforts to educate and inform are both respectful and audible to every community in Madison. If the use or non-use of the peace sign has a part to play, it should emerge out of this larger discussion, not be the instrument to open a can of worms. What we really need to examine is: what efforts have been made to build coalitions with various communities in Madison? I know efforts have just started to outreach to labor--excellent & long overdue as well. Have we tried to invite other communities to get involved, or explored ways of networking? When I emailed my contacts in the Muslim Students' Assoc & the Islamic Ctr about the rally this Saturday, they were unaware of any other MAPC effort to involve or even connect with their organizations. So--what has been done so far? What can be done? Secondly but no less importantly, we need to collect feedback from non-dominant-culture perspectives, whether coalition members or our contacts in various communities, regarding: 1) perception of MAPC / anti-war movement in general--relevant? Inclusive? 2) things MAPC can do to be *perceived* as more welcoming to anti-war people in various communities 3) things MAPC can do to actually *be* more representative of a variety of views and voices 4) particular ways MAPC can network with community leaders 5) best strategies for each community for outreach on anti-war issues. It seems especially important that MAPC be a haven and firm support for anyone who feels isolated and vulnerable at the moment--whether it be the direct targets of racist scapegoating, or international students from any part of the globe who feel isolated by their anti-imperialist perspectives and/or afraid of the new anti-immigrant laws. So my final recommendation is that our next action should really target issues of racial profiling, Ashcroft's stripping away of immigrants' rights, and the hundreds of people currently in custody over a month without due process. (I was planning to suggest this anyway--it didn't just come up because of tonight's meeting). Guess that's more than two cents! CNN is reporting a small deployment of Special Forces ground troops, probably intended to locate targets for air strikes rather than to engage in combat.  Fox News is reporting three teams of a dozen troops each.  One of them reported that there had been numerous prior sightings of U.S. troops, but that this was the first official confirmation.  It's not the top story either place. My recollection from the CC discussions was that an emergency response would be automatic in the event of a non-Special Forces ground invasion or a *major* deployment of Special Forces, but that a small Special Forces deployment would not necessarily trigger an emergency action. I would also note that, in the two hours since x posted this, there has been no other discussion of an action on any of the MAPC lists.  So I don't get the impression that other folks in MAPC have interpreted this as requiring immediate action. In New York City, you have town squares even though not all of you may use them.  In L.A. sadly we lack a place where people can come together for the most part.  The opportunity that New York has especially and the world has to move forward through this time to a place of extremely higher consciousness is palpable.  You can reach out and grab the feeling, it is in the air, it is tangible, and it is even more evident when you see a person not understand how palpable it is. When that happens it is the place for those who do see to help bring people to this greater understanding. It is most important for all of us to remember to breathe.  For breath is the intake and the out take for which we as a race communicate. It shares our feelings with one another and lets us release what is inside of us, be it anger, love, compassion, fear or numbness.  I urge you all to breathe and look each other in the eyes in this time of change for only then will we truly move on to the place that we need to. When you next look at your best friend, your lover, your partner, breathe in and out and let go.  Then try and do it with each one of your friends, then with strangers and soon we will see the difference as we truly speak to one another. Policy Folks -     The media committee needs to send the following out in the next few days.  Please forward comments to X. ==================================================================== Dear Editor:       This year Madisonians are invited to join in a Peace Parade in solidarity with the eleventh annual School of the Americas protest.  The parade is being held at MATC Truax at noon on Saturday, November 17th.  For more information call 835-7501 or go to www.madpeace.org.       Alexander Cockburn (11/02/01 'U.S. eyes sheer torture') notes that the United States government has sheltered torturers around the world.  One way the government has done this is through the Army School of the Americas (SOA) in Fort Benning, Georgia, long a U.S. military training school for torture techniques.  The School's graduates have gone on to mastermind torture and death squads in their home countries in Latin America.  In fact, SOA alumni form a who's who of notorious human rights abusers in the region.   For ten years, American citizens have protested the School of the Americas outside  Fort Benning on a Saturday in November.       Recently the Army has tried to change the image of the SOA.  They changed the name to The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC). WHINSEC continues to train military personnel of Latin American nations.  But now WHINSEC's stated mission includes training students to provide humanitarian aid, to direct peacekeeping efforts, and to protect individual human rights. To the extent that these are sincere efforts we applaud them.       However, by training Latin American soldiers in tactics of war, WHINSEC promotes and exports violence.  Besides seeking acknowledgement and redress for the terrible deeds of past SOA graduates, we also seek to change the involvement of the US Government in exporting violence, along with promotion of acts reinforcing poverty and increasing economic disparity.  In this regard, we support House Resolution 1810 of the 107th US Congress, which repeals authority for WHINSEC and calls for congressional oversight of future training of Latin American military personnel. Hi folks - Policy had a lovely and productive meeting last night.  In attendance were X, X, x, X, and X.  Here is our plan for the next few weeks. A.  CITY RESOLUTION. 1.  X will draft this, based on Sen. Wellstone's, the City of Berkeley, and other sources.  It should have a positive tone, and use "famous quotes" for credibility.  We'll all work on the final draft. 2.  After we have the resolution, MAPC members will target various city alders to have it brought up.  We'll figure out more about this procedure. B.  LETTER WRITING/PHONE CAMPAIGN. 1. X will prepare a contact sheet and sample letter(s) for easy distribution at the Nov. 17 action and other meetings and events.  We will have a table on 11/17 for anti-war letter writing to federal legislators. 2.  Some concern was raised because right now, no mail is being opened in DC due to the anthrax scare.  Call-in campaigns are imperative, such as the one X circulated. C.  BALDWIN MEETING. 1.  X will set this up for next week.  Format will be along the lines of the first two meetings we've had.  8-9 am is the best time for everyone. A variety of people want to attend. This should keep us busy for the next few weeks! I'd be very interested in seeing what the Student/Youth Caucus comes up with as a design and see if it works better or worse than what we have now. However, I disagree that the peace symbol is simply a symbol of the Vietnam era - e.g. I see youth today hold up the peace sign all the time. I personally very much like the logo we now use and think it would be good to work the bugs out of the problem of the grey-scale so there won't be reproduction problems.  I certtainly don't think we should go without a graphic and only use our name.  Art communicates so much and so simply, plus we won't look bland if we only used words. My father has spent years trying to get people in the US government to listen. And he has sat around our dinner table talking to his children for hours on end about what was happening to his homeland.  Many of our family's friends have listened as my Dad spoke passionately about the hateful crimes the Taliban was committing against innocent Afghans all in the name of Islam, an Islam that my family does not know, an Islam that cannot be found in the pages of the Koran. I beg you, as friends, to take the anger we all feel and try to learn and spread knowledge.  We all want retaliation.  We want someone to pay for the innocent people whose lives were taken away.  But, please, please, please understand that Afghans like me and my family have never supported the Taliban.  In fact, we have watched helplessly as these cowards took the little bit of dignity the Afghans had left after the Soviet war. I went to work the other night and watched groups of friends, bright and educated people, stop their conversations as I approached.  I have never experienced anything like this.  My Dad recently grew a beard, but after seeing images of bearded fundamentalists on TV, we have asked him to shave it off to quell any possibility of attacks out of ignorance.  For the first time in my life, I am afraid to tell people my ethnic background.  My name is a liability.  My coloring makes me feel scared when people look at me on the subway.  I find myself thankful that my sisters and Mom have lighter coloring. Please read the following letter.  We all feel helpless right now.  If nothing else, please try to educate your friends.  Please do not perpetuate hate.  Hatred brought down the World Trade Center.  Hate is hate-there is no gray area.  Please forward the following letter to everyone you know.  Take a moment to paste the letter into a new email, add your own thought. Here is his take on Afghanistan and the whole mess we are in. *  x Dear Gary and whoever else is on this email thread: I've been hearing a lot of talk about "bombing Afghanistan back to the Stone Age." Ronn Owens, on KGO Talk Radio today, allowed that this would mean killing innocent people, people who had nothing to do with this atrocity, but "we're at war, we have to accept collateral damage. What else can we do?"  Minutes later I heard some TV pundit discussing whether we "have the belly to do what must be done." And I thought about the issues being raised especially hard because I am from Afghanistan, and even though I've lived here for 35 years I've never lost track of what's going on there. So I want to tell anyone who will listen how it all looks from where I'm standing.  I speak as one who hates the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. There is no doubt in my mind that these people were responsible for the atrocity in New York.  I agree that something must be done about those monsters.  But the Taliban and Ben Laden are not Afghanistan.  They're not even the  government of Afghanistan.  The Taliban are a cult of ignorant psychotics  who took over Afghanistan in 1997. Bin Laden is a political criminal with a  plan.  When you think Taliban, think Nazis. When you think Bin Laden, think  Hitler. And when you think "the people of Afghanistan" think "the Jews in the concentration camps."   It's not only that the Afghan people had nothing to do with this atrocity. They were the first victims of the perpetrators.  They would exult if someone would come in there, take out the Taliban and clear out the rats nest of international thugs holed up in their country.  Some say, why don't the Afghans rise up and overthrow the Taliban? The answer is, they're starved, exhausted, hurt, incapacitated, suffering. A few years ago, the United Nations estimated that there are 500,000 disabled orphans in Afghanistan-a country with no economy, no food. There are millions of widows.  And the Taliban has been burying these widows alive in mass graves.  The soil is littered with land mines, the farms were all destroyed by the Soviets.  These are a few of the reasons why the Afghan people have not overthrown the Taliban. We come now to the question of bombing Afghanistan back to the Stone Age.  Trouble is, that's been done.  The Soviets took care of it already.  Make the Afghans suffer? They're already suffering.  Level their houses?  Done. Turn their schools into piles of rubble?  Done. Eradicate their hospitals?  Done.  Destroy their infrastructure?  Cut them off from medicine and health care?  Too late.  Someone already did all that.  New bombs would only stir the rubble of earlier bombs.  Would they at  least get the Taliban?  Not likely. In today's Afghanistan, only the  Taliban eat, only they have the means to move around.  They'd slip away and hide. Maybe the bombs would get some of those disabled orphans, they don't move too fast, they don't even have wheelchairs.  But flying over Kabul and dropping bombs wouldn't really be a strike against the criminals who did this horrific thing.  Actually it would only be making common cause with the Taliban-by raping once again the people they've been raping all this time.  So what else is there?  What can be done, then? Let me now speak with true fear and trembling. The only way to get Bin Laden is to go in there with ground troops. When people speak of "having the belly to do what needs to be done" they're thinking in terms of having the belly to kill as many as needed.  Having the belly to overcome any moral qualms about killing innocent people. Let's pull our heads out of the sand. What's actually on the table is Americans dying. And not just because some Americans would die fighting their way through Afghanistan to Bin Laden's hideout.  It's much bigger than that folks. Because to get any troops to Afghanistan, we'd have to go through Pakistan. Would they let us? Not likely. The conquest of Pakistan would have to be first. Will other Muslim nations just stand by?  You see where I'm going. We're flirting with a world war between Islam and the West.  And guess what: that's Bin Laden's program.  That's exactly what he wants.  That's why he did this.  Read his speeches and statements.  It's all right there.  He really believes Islam would beat the west.  It might seem ridiculous, but he figures if he can polarize the world into Islam and the West, he's got a billion soldiers.  If the west wreaks a holocaust in those lands, that's a billion people with nothing left to lose, that's even better from Bin Laden's point of view.  He's probably wrong, in the end the west would win, whatever that would mean, but the war would last for years and millions would die, not just theirs but ours.
