I was very concerned and saddened by some of what happened last night in regards to the direction of the peace sign logo "discussion." I have told the Coordinating Committee before and other individuals that I would like to concentrate much of energies on outreach efforts to the greater Madison communities and populations.  I also must say that I've been remiss in not attending the last two 0&E committee meetings because I wanted to specifically bring this topic of connecting with others up to the group. I know there was discussion awhile back about separating the outreach and education components of that committee but it didn't lead to anything I believe because that committee's idea of what outreach was for their tasks was different from what I'm talking about here. I do intend to begin to work on this issue now, don't know if anyone else wants to specifically work on this as well, but that would be great.  If you do, please contact me at my email address or at XXX-XXXX. I also think that we need to do an action you described regarding the racial profiling issue--I was talking about the same thing later last night with my family.  In addition to what you've mentioned that's been going on in this realm, there've been at least 5,000 people who have undergone or are undergoing questioning by our government and also an Executive Order by Bush today or yesterday to establish a military-run terrorist tribunal.  Very heavy-duty activvities! Table the logo for a week, talk about these important issues of inclusiveness, and then revive the logo discussion without it being a litmus test of any kind.  I'm sure we've all seen it happen before. People who fundamentally mean well and generally agree with each other can get sidetracked into bitter wars over what meanings should be attributed to a symbol or symbolic action. Arguments over differing interpretations degenerate into labeling each others' interpretations in very negative ways. Right now, rather than fighting over the history vs. the perception of the peace sign, we should be focused on taking concrete steps to ensure (1) that everyone who opposes the war feels comfortable working with MAPC and (2) that MAPC's efforts to educate and inform are both respectful and audible to every community in Madison. If the use or non-use of the peace sign has a part to play, it should emerge out of this larger discussion, not be the instrument to open a can of worms.What we really need to examine is: what efforts have been made to build coalitions with various communities in Madison? I know efforts have just started to outreach to labor--excellent & long overdue as well. Have we tried to invite other communities to get involved, or explored ways of networking? When I emailed my contacts in the Muslim Students' Assoc & the Islamic Ctr about the rally this Saturday, they were unaware of any other MAPC effort to involve or even connect with their organizations. So--what has been done so far? What can be done?  Secondly but no less importantly, we need to collect feedback from non-dominant-culture perspectives, whether coalition members or our contacts in various communities, regarding:1) perception of MAPC / anti-war movement in general--relevant? Inclusive?2) things MAPC can do to be *perceived* as more welcoming to anti-war people in various communities 3) things MAPC can do to actually *be* more representative of a variety of views and voices 4) particular ways MAPC can network with community leaders 5) best strategies for each community for outreach on anti-war issues.It seems especially important that MAPC be a haven and firm support for anyone who feels isolated and vulnerable at the moment--whether it be the direct targets of racist scapegoating, or international students from any part of the globe who feel isolated by their anti-imperialist perspectives and/or afraid of the new anti-immigrant laws. So my final recommendation is that our next action should really target issues of racial profiling, Ashcroft's stripping away of immigrants' rights, and the hundreds of people currently in custody over a month without due process. (I was planning to suggest this anyway--it didn't just come up because of tonight's meeting).  Guess that's more than two cents! Is it really OK for Black folks to ride around with American flags? Is racial profiling now OK when directed to the Arab and Muslim Communities? Recent polls in the Black community show that 60% of African Americans are in favor of racial profiling of the Arab/Muslim community in light of the 911 World Trade bombings. Is racial profiling, a product of insidious American racism, ever justified? Timothy McVeigh--male, white, American, veteran, Michigan militia member, blew up the Oklahoma federal building. America did not racially profile white Americans. America did not advocate blowing up the State of Michigan. The Taliban wants evidence of Osama bin Laden's guilt before they turn bin Laden over to a court. No negotiations says Bush. 'When I said no negotiations, I meant no negotiations. We know he's guilty; turn him over.' Don't need evidence to find bin Laden guilty. Nothing new to South Central LA. Most of the 56,775 inmates in California's prisons under the 3 Strikes Law were convicted with little or no evidence, often on the word of a police officer, or worse still, sentenced to 25 years to life because 5, 10, 15 years or more ago the evidence was a bargained plea. 57% of these prisoners are African American; this in a state that may be 12% African American. California Courts don't need evidence to convict. Simi Valley, 1992, lots of evidence showed 5 white policemen brutally beating and inflicting permanent damage on a Black motorist. The evidence was superfluous because a jury thought Stacey Koon and company were acting in the best interests of the people. Not guilty on all counts. Don't need evidence to convict white police who beat and murder Blacks, need a miracle! The Bill of Rights, that little document which is supposed to govern how we do business in the United States of America, says a person is innocent until proven guilty, and that the accused can face his accuser in a court of law and that the defendant is entitled to a trial by jury - a jury of his peers. "Turn him over, turn his cohorts over, turn any hostage they hold over, destroy all the terrorist camps. ... I told them exactly what they needed to do. There's no need to discuss innocence or guilt. We know he's guilty. Turn him over," said the president selected by the Supreme Court. Dear Committee,      Last night we got the mandate from MAPC to float both a stronger "stop the bombing" resolution, and a weaker one (the one posted to the discussion list and handed out last night).      I was somewhat dismayed to realize today that the deadline for filing resolutions for the next meeting is today at noon, or tomorrow at noon for addendum.      So I took the liberty of contacting by e-mail all the alders X suggested we approach (5 or 6).  I presented them with both copies.      The stronger language I inserted was to replace the next-to-last clause with "BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the United States should immediately stop military action against Afghanistan because that is the main obstacle to addressing the humanitarian catastrophe there; and."  Otherwise, it's the same as the one posted to the discussion list.      X got back to me right away saying he needs to take the weekend at least to discuss with his colleagues.  I thanked him.      I'm sorry for acting unilaterally.  The deadline got me panicked.  Now we know we have definitely missed the upcoming 11/6 Common Council meeting. Dear Action and Coordination committees, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition would like to offer the MAPC members a teach-in on the Palestine/Israel conflict X, a graduate student writing his thesis on the conflict and the founder of Alternative Palestinian Agenda, does a 45 minute teach-in that covers the geographical, political, legal, and historical aspect of the conflict.  We believe that there will be an interest among MAPC members and that it would benefit them to have a basic understanding of the issue, if they don't already. AHMED TIMES NEWS NETWORK LONDON: America was itself to blame for the events of September 11 because the US administration was using "kid gloves" in tracking down Osama bin Laden and "other fanatics linked to Saudi Arabia", a special BBC investigation has alleged in a damning indictment of the two presidents Bush and American foreign policy. The report, which the BBC claimed was based on a secret FBI document, numbered 199I WF213589 and emanating out of the FBIs Washington field office, alleged that the cynicism of the American establishment and "connections between the CIA and Saudi Arabia and the Bush men and bin Ladens" may have been the real cause of the deaths of thousands in the World Trade Centre attacks. The investigation, which featured in the BBCs leading current affairs programme, Newsnight, said the FBI was told to "back off" investigating one of Osama bin Ladens brothers, Abdullah, who was linked to "the Saudi-funded World Association of Muslim Youth (WAMY), a suspected terrorist organisation," whose accounts have still not been frozen by the US treasury despite being banned by Pakistan some weeks ago and India claiming it was linked to an organisation involved in bombing in Kashmir". Newsnight said there was a long history of "shadowy" American connections with Saudi Arabia, not least the two presidents Bushs "business dealings" with the bin Ladens and another more insidious link revealed by the former head of the American visa section in Jeddah. The official said he had been concerned about visas issued to large numbers of "unqualified" men "with no family links or any links with America or Saudi Arabia", only to find out later that it "was not visa fraud" but part of a scheme in which young men "recruited by Osama bin Laden" were being sent for "terrorist training by the CIA" after which they were sent on to Afghanistan. In a reiteration of a now well-known claim by one of George W Bushs former business partners, the BBC said he made his first million 20 years ago on the back of a company financed by Osamas elder brother, Salem. But it added the more disturbing assertion that both presidents Bush had lucrative stakes along with the bin Ladens in Carlyle Corporation, a small private company  which has gone on to become one of America's biggest defence contractors. The bin Ladens sold their stake in Carlyle soon after September 11, it said. Dear Media Committee:      Thanks for your help publicizing this resolution!      Here's a possible correction to the text you may have included in a press release.  I just pulled the text off the Common Council agenda for 11/20 (on the city web site http://www.ci.madison.wi.us/council/ccattach/att112001/30696.pdf), and realized that the call to stop the bombing was somehow excised from the version formally submitted by the alders to the city (note in first "BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT" clause, the text about "defering to the judgement of international aid agencies that a cessation in the bombing is necessary..." was deleted).  Brief pause for a moment of profound disappointment.       OK, we still have a very important resolution.       I just wanted to let you know about the correct text.       I will be printing 400 quarter sheets for tomorrow with the alder contact info (Thanks, Lori!).  See you at the Parade! I think it's a great idea.  But, I don't think we can have both groups working on specific events needs AND groups working on the other general issues, there will be too much cross purpose work.  As I think the committees who are sponsoring the events are already coordinating the events and asking for help as needed, I would propose the breakout groups work on the general issues: 1) working on the brochure 2) postering for the upcoming planned events only (coordinating to minimize duplicate efforts right now, not the overall plan of how to deal with this in the future) 3) labor caucus - at least show of interest As for website suggestions, the Communications cmte will be meeting shortly, and I would like to see what develops before throwing this out to the gm. Regardless of whether any other breakouts occur, I'd definitely encourage X to pull together a quick meeting of  the labor folks immediately after the meeting, if only for long enough to set a future meeting date for the labor caucus. We (F&F) might attempt the same thing to try to recruit folks to work on the art auction; I don't think either of those breakouts would take any major effort. I'm not sure if the other proposed breakouts would take great effort or not. As far as "painting ourselves too student-like", I am fully aware of the role students are playing in the movement. I am also all too aware that the media and politicians are attempting to ghetto-ize the peace movement as solely campus based. The bulk of the readership of the WSJ is not on campus. It only makes sense that we attempt to portray the movement as broader than the campus in order to reach out to them. Hi Everyone,    The Policy Committee continues to push to get a peace resolution debated in the Common Council, but will not have concrete progress to report tomorrow night.    We have been very actively contacting the progressive alders, but now we need to step back for a day or two (again) to give them a chance to respond.    A common reaction from the alders is that it is problematic to introduce a resolution that gets only a few votes.  This could send the message that the city isn't for peace, or jepardize future resolutions on the same issue.   So our proposed resolution may end up being debated after Thanksgiving if at all--we'll know soon.    It's interesting.  One school of thought seems to be that even introduction of a resolution is positive since it generates debate.  Another school is that some collegiality among progressive alders must be preserved, divisiveness must be avoided, and you don't want to waste political capital on something that has no chance of passing.    What do you think?    Should we do a County resolution, too?
