Does a 's Executive's family get money? Why? Since he was certainly making millions of dollars a year and is no doubt insured to the hilt. In that particular case it seems unfair to give that family any money, they don't really need it. Are we giving these people money simply because they are tied to this particular event? What about the thousands of people who lose family members to accidents and 'everyday' violence? Are they any less deserving of a helping hand? While I am sad that so many people have to face the rigors of insurance and governmental paperwork, it is, after all, what the rest of us are forced to do. Do you not think that gay couples were effected just as much as anyone else? That they don't grieve just as much or feel the same pain? This exclusion only makes the pain that more unbearable. You've been thoughtful enough to make the eligibility list comprehensive, but leaving homosexuals off is outrageous. Feinberg September 11th Victim Compensation Fund U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20530 To Mr. Feinberg: This is to urge you to ensure fair treatment for all surviving families of the tragedy on Sept. 11, including the children and families of low-wage workers and gay and lesbian families. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the state of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. Why should they have a cap if the rest of us are looking at retirement now starting at age 70. b) There should be no deductions for any charity received by the victim's dependants. Sunday, March 17, 2002 2:38 AM America United To Whom It May Concern, Recently I have read an article regarding the Sept, 11th funds being distributed to illegal aliens and the unborn child of those whose family members died in the attacks. That would sit well with me if it were not for the blatant discrimination against gays in the same matter. Why is it the law can be brushed aside when it comes to everyone but gays? Did we all not lose in these attacks? Chaplain Father &nbsp who died in the line of duty when the first tower fell, or &nbsp who was copilot of the plane that crashed into the Pentagon and &nbsp who helped bring down the flight in Pennsylvania, were all gay. Are they less than those who are here illegally? Is their deed not that of a hero? Don't go down in history as being a bunch of bigots too afraid to be human in a time when we all supposedly stand united. The next time something tragic happens and it's a sad fact in this day and age that it will, the person that saves your life may very well be the one you've discriminate against. Friday, December 14, 2001 9:03 AM Protect Traditional Marriage Mr. Kenneth Zwick Office of Management Programs Department of Justice Washington, DC Dear Mr. Zwick: I want to express my opposition to any effort by the federal government to provide 9-11 victim compensation funds to "domestic partners" of unmarried survivors of the terrorist attack upon our nation. Funds disbursed through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 should only go to the surviving family members of those who died on 9-11. Funds must go to the widows, widowers, orphans, and other blood-related or adopted members of the family--not to unmarried sexual partners of those who died. To provide funds to "domestic partners" is to undermine the traditional definition of marriage and family to include any number of sexual liaisons between same-sex or opposite-sex unmarried couples. Many homosexuals and swinging heterosexuals, for example, engage in sex with multiple partners. Do we provide funds to each of the sexual partners? Where do we draw the line on how many "domestic partners" a person may have? Homosexual activists are exploiting the 9-11 tragedy by asking the federal government to redefine what constitutes a legitimate "family" under the law. In fact, homosexual activist , writing in Out magazine has openly called for the subversion of the concept of marriage between a man and a woman. He has urged homosexuals to fight for the legalization of homosexual marriages and once legalized to "redefine the institution of marriage completely . . . . to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution. . . . The most subversive action lesbians and gays can under take--and one that would perhaps benefit all of society--is to transform the notion of 'family' entirely." If the DOJ provides funds to "domestic partners," it will be helping accomplish his goal: That of redefining marriage and altering what he calls an "archaic institution." We also oppose September 11th Funds going to the estates of the deceased instead of to their surviving family members. No one can know for certain where these funds will end up if they are deposited in the estate of a person who has died. The person may have willed his estate to a terrorist, racial hate group, or even to an organization like the North American Man-Boy Love Association. No one will know unless each person's will is examined by a DOJ lawyer. The money should go to the surviving family members of the deceased, not to the estate or to the surviving "domestic partner." Wednesday, December 19, 2001 1:16 PM Regarding Sept 11 Victim Compensation Fund Dear Sir,   I am a British citizen writing to you in connection with the compensation fund set up to aid the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11th. I understand that the guidelines regarding exactly who is eligible for compensation will be declared this Friday, and bearing in mind that a significant number of the bereaved are gay and lesbian partners of the victims, or otherwise unmarried partners, I would like to know whether they will benefit from the fund.   The reason for my asking is because I am aware that many gay and lesbian people have applied for relief at the local level, but have not always been successful in obtaining equal treatment with married couples.   New York state has already granted compensation benefits to anyone "showing....mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need."  I urge that this principle be respected with the Victim Compensation Fund, and that when allocating benefit to the families of the deceased, the term 'family' will be broad enough to include, for example, gay and lesbian partners, unmarried couples, and adopted family members.   I believe that to do otherwise would amount to an act of arbitrary discrimination against the groups I have mentioned; regardless of the actual marital status or sexual orientation of those involved, the bereavement and the hardship this often brings is the same for each and all, and permitting them equal acccess to the fund is an essential way of maintaining their dignity in this very difficult time. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Justice Department, The 9/11 fund was set up with the express purpose of honoring the memory of those who died in the tragedy which befell our nation in September. However, the position of the DOJ is that same sex partners will not recieve benefits from this fund unless states recognize them. As you are well aware, states are just now starting to realize that same sex partners are worthy of the same respect as heterosexual partners. Since the government has denied the right to marry to same sex couples, they are unable to automatically receive many of the benefits heterosexual couples are able to take for granted. When Thomas Jefferson wrote the words "all men are created equal" he meant everyone. Including homosexuals. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same.
