First of all, I don't believe such a fund should exist. As we have all seen the amount of private donations to the victims has been extraordinay. Also as the actual count of the victims has dropped dramatically, the amount of private donations for each of those victims families has risen dramatically. Therefore, do any of the victims families really need any taxpayer money on top of the massive windfall of private contributions they are already receiving? Also the horrible precedent that this fund sets is very scary as a tax payer. Why should the victims of 9/11 be treated any differently than anyone else whom dies unexpectedly? If the victims of 9/11 are compensated so generously by the US taxpayer, what is to preclude any other unexpected deaths to be not compensated? Concerning the amounts that are being discussed for the 9/11 victims; I am appalled at the huge amounts of tax-free money being thrown at the victims families. When did the idea of compensation shift from helping the victims get back on their feet and meeting immediate expenses to one of trying to make them independetly wealthy and not wanting for anything the rest of their lives? The whining from the victims' families about the size of the compensation is revolting. These ungrateful jerks shouln't be getting any taxpayer money at all, and all they do is scream and whine about not getting more. Have they no shame? Why in the hell do these people think they should be entitled to pick the pockets of hard working taxpayers? Lastly, there is a lot of whining about life insurance proceeds being deducted from the amounts being givern out. Please explain to me why the amount of Life Insurance a person held was adequate to cover an untimely death while that person was alive, but as soon as they are killed then the amount of Life Insurance they held is no longer adequate. All of these victims and their families made Life Insurance decisions while those people were living, it clearly was their duty to have an amount of life insurance which would provide for the survivors in the event of an untimely death. Again, why would those people now complain about not having enough compensation?, they picked their own level of life insurance. DUH Please take these concerns seriously. The concerns of the non-victim US citizens must be taken into account. After all it is my money you are throwing around to these ingrates. Tuesday, November 06, 2001 4:27 PM Victim's Compensation Fund Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to express my feelings because I feel that victims of the September 11 tragedies should have their awards reduced by the amount of charitable aid they receive. It is not because I do not know these families have suffered. It is because the purpose of this fund as I see it is to make families whole from this horrible act, not enrich them at the expense of taxpayers. Workers are killed or permanently disabled every day in on-the-job accidents. One of the functions of my job is to administer a scholarship program for the children of these workers in Alabama. They may receive workers' compensation and/or SSI, but that is it. If workers who are killed have no life insurance, there is no group offering money for these families until their children are grown. My house burned when I was a child. Of course people gave us clothes and such, but insurance rebuilt our house. My grandparents' house was destroyed by a tornado. Again, insurance rebuilt their house. To me it is an issue of fairness. What is fair for all the people whose homes are destroyed or who lose a family member each year to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, car wrecks or robbers? Yes, these families' loss is terrible. However, I feel it is no more terrible than any other family who loses a family member or home to a tragedy. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality. Wednesday, March 20, 2002 7:01 PM To Whom It Concerns, As a lesbian in a committed relationship with my partner for many years (9 plus) I feel the need to voice my opinion about the fact that gays and lesbian will not be given any financial relief from the funds which were set up to help victims of the September 11th disaster. I cannot believe that our goverment continues to be so NARROW minded and feels that discrimination is still an accepted behavior in our country. These families deserve the same benefits and recognition that any other families who suffered losses during this tragic event in our history. When is the goverment going to wake up and realize that gay people work for a living, pay taxes etc. That we are not excempt from inheritance taxes, family responsibility, financial responsibility etc. We have all of the same joys and sorrows as any other heterosexual couple. I am proud of my life, of who I am, of the family my partner and I have created and I am extremely saddened and angry that once again, the ignorant, uneducated people running our country are finding a way to discriminate against honest, law abiding citizens of the United States.
