The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. Monday, November 05, 2001 8:44 PM Victems' Compensation I think the award should be to the surviving dependents', at the time of their benefactor's untimely death--- what that benefactor's lifelong contributions in earnings (based on income/savings, etc.) at death, projected into the future, had they lived out their full actuarial lives, would have earned, and who their heirs were. Millions of people in this country have their lives cut short through the illegal or, wars, or otherwise misdeeds of others, or circumstance, and get compensated through Worker's Comp, life insurance and private insurance.. While this was a really devastating event, we have to keep in mind, other victims of tragedy, through wars, (WW I, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Desert Storm, etc.). If we can just get all the charitable organizations to distribute (distribute being the operative word here) equitably, all the funds Americans poured out, the families should get enough to live grandly from this day forward. Whatever is left over should go to the aforementioned groups that got very little in the way of compensation for losses suffered. By the way, did our Government ever get those Marine bodies back from Somalia that were dragged, LIVE, behind Jeeps until they died? I was shocked to hear Mr. Feinburg on Meet the Press yesterday. He stated that our country is so compassionate that the fund will give money to all of the widowed, the children, born and unborn, even fetuses of those who were killed in the September 11th tragedy. He then went on to say that illegal aliens will be eligible, without any repercussions due to their unlawful status, nor will their employers who illegally employed them. He then stated that Gay and Lesbian people will be excluded to the same extent their States Laws discriminate against them. Heroes like &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp and Flight Attendant &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp are not only having their ultimate contributions ignored, but &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp partner in life (as well as the partners of all of the other Gay or Lesbian folk who were killed either in the terrorist act, or who died saving others as fire fighters, police personnel or just plain folk trying to save others). He, by his actions on the plane, probably saved countless lives, many of them Republicans, and possibly your own, and sacrificed his own life in the process. Why? I am truly, truly sickened and saddened by Mr. Feinberg's position in the equal compensation to domestic partners. When did one have to become 'eligible' for this compensation? Isn't dying and leaving loved ones behind eligibility enough? I sincerely hope that measures are taken to ensure that domestic partners are entitled to the same benefits as our heterosexual counterparts, if not, it would just go to show that the deaths of affected gay men and women do not count for anything. This importantly should include the partners and children of same sex unions. They suffer just as grievously for their deceased loved ones as do other survivors, and their need for assistance is just as great. Please do not give in to the importuning of callous homophobic groups and individuals who would have the Department of Justice limit compensation to survivors of heterosexual unions.
