I lost my wife ( and we did act as husband and wife, though we were not married, for 20 years) at the Pentagon, she was aboard Flight 77and did not ask to die that day. We were going to celebrate our 20th anniversary together on Sept 12th and her 44th birthday on Sept 17th. This was a devastating event in my life. I lost the love of my life, my reason for being. Should I and others like me be penalized because we choose not to be married (and incur the marriage penalty in regards to income tax). I was laid off in April 2001 and she was also my sole source of income. There is no way to express to grief and pain I have suffered since this event. My life has forever been altered and nothing will ever bring my wife back to me. It also seems that the victims on board the flight that crashed into the Pentagon have largely been forgotten. Lost among those killed at the WTC. PLEASE treat EVERYONE fairly, the grief is the same even if they were NOT married. Additionally,awards under this fund should NOT be reduced by collateral funds received. Families of victims should not be penalized for good insurance planning or an advantageous benefit package offered by an employer by having these types of funds reduce the compensation award from the Federal Government. Remember, we have been paying insurance premiums all these years. I don't believe it is fair to penalize us for planning to be able to provide for our loved ones. Thank you. Monday, January 07, 2002 6:27 PM Comments on Victim Compensation Fund My comments will be short and to the point: 1) The victims of 9/11 should NOT be compensated by the government using our tax dollars. They should not be allowed to sue the airlines, who were NOT responsible, for any amount of money. In fact, none of those actually responsible for 9/11 are in a position to sue, being either dead or otherwise unavailable. 2) The money collected from donations amounted to an awful lot. Isn't THAT money supposed to go to the victims? Time and energy would be better spent making sure that money gets to where it was supposed to go. There are a lot of people out there who donated money that they needed themselves and who wouldn't have donated if they had known they would be paying twice. 3) What makes the victims in New York any better than the other people that died that day? As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. In compensating victims, real justice will be served only when all families - and all types of families - impacted by the human rights tragedy of September 11 are treated with dignity and equality. Suffice to say that we certainly expected the overwhelming percentage of what we gave to go *directly* to those personally impacted by the disaster - when I hear reports that the American Red Cross will be distributing less than 20% of the money it collected to the actual victims I am sickened and angered. All the hand waving and bureaucratic explanations in the world cannot shake my unswerving conviction that this outcome is simply, unequivocally wrong. You all are the "department of justice" well, where is the justice here? My wife and I are kind hearted but we are not wealthy - had we known what a fiasco this would all turn out to be we probably would have explored other alternatives. I never expected things to go the way they apparently have, it is a monumental injustice. The sad thing is - none of this actually makes life better for those families who have been ripped apart by this senseless violence ... if nothing else can be done, please publish a validated list of names and addresses and my wife and I will see what we can do to come up with something additional to help.
